Me in high school reading about the Ancient Greek practice of Ornithomancy: Lol that’s so silly they really thought they could predict things about the future based on the random shit that birds do 😂
Me as an adult after seeing a swallow-tailed kite on my drive to work: oh my god that was everything. What a blessing. It is going to be the most beautiful perfect day. Everything is gonna go my way now I can just feel it

bird-watching for omens is fun until it becomes very dramatic and suddenly you understand every moment in the Illiad where Khalkas predicts doom by watching birds.

I'm wanting to get more into divination, especially ornithomancy (inspired by my interest in birds)
If anyone has information or good resources on ornithomancy, how to start etc, I'd love to know (I may not get through sources I'm sent until after I'm done with finals but still), I'd appreciate any sources or tips from people who use ornithomancy
Things pertaining to the Greek/Hellenic gods in terms of interpretations are especially welcome, but any information or advice would be appreciated

i might have realized a pattern in a specific bird i'm seeing and honestly, if it's that, it's almost a little funny

the fuck not
Ornithomancy:
crows:
1 for sorrow. 2 for mirth. 3 for a wedding. 4 for a birth. 5 for silver. 6 for gold. 7 for a secret to never be told. 8 for a kiss. 9 for a wish and 10 for a bird you shall not miss
magpies:
1 for sorrow. 2 for joy. 3 for a girl. 4 for a boy. 5 for silver. 6 for gold. 7 for a secret never to be told. 8 for a kiss. 9 for a wish. 10 for a surprise never to be missed. 11 for health. 12 for wealth. 13 the devil in himself
imma use the magpie one when spring rolls around if they aren't too busy fucking murdering me!

Start With This: Art is Disposable
It feels appropriate, somehow, as the classicist daughter of an ornithologist to be lying in the grass on the hill behind the hospital trying to use ornithomancy to determine the outcome of her mother’s surgery.
She is lying facing to the north, which puts her at a slightly odd angle, but that is how the Greeks did it, and it means that the good omens will be coming from the east where the hospital lies. Her right leg is crossed over her left, both her hands folded across her stomach holding her phone in place to make absolutely certain that she will feel it when her sister lets her know their mother is out of surgery.
The sky is beginning to cloud over, and she is wondering if she will have to give up, when a kererū files overhead from the east. It may be a bird of Aotearoa and so entirely unfamiliar to the Greeks, but she decides it is a good omen.
They are big birds kererū, with the beautiful colourful feathers she has seen before on traditional Māori cloaks, they are slow moving with loud distinctive wing beats, making them both easy and worthwhile to hunt. Surely, they can only mean good things.
As she is thinking this, her phone vibrates. She looks at the text, screening her eyes from the sudden beam of sun that has broken through the clouds, then putting her phone down again she closes her eyes and tilts her head towards the setting sun, the same direction the kererū flew, a relieved smile spreading across her face.
The create for this episode was: Write a 250. word story about a wedding reception. Refine it a bit. Now completely delete it! Then, write a 250-word story about a bird, share this one.

So I headed off to buy some cheese and ham in the supermarket with my father's card, saw an owl flying up in my left (right on Tritogeneia, i.e. Athene's day) and decided instead to go to the nearby deli. Turns out the password he handed me was wrong and would've been way worse to lose all my time in a supermarket line.
What curious thing to happen, is it not?

See. The problem with letting a work friend know about my tumblr is, she can see I was up until midnight shitposting and reblogging like mad. So tomorrow, when I am inevitably late to work again, @ornithomance can absolutely look at my post time stamps and judge me accordingly.
But in my defense…… I have executive dysfunction and the tumblr makes the hamsters squeak in my brain??

The Ultimate Grimoire Guide
So! I have been seeing a ton of grimoire ideas and thought I’d stuff them all together. A lot of ideas are from @manifestationsofasort, @banebite, and @pigeonflavouredcake. Check them out! They have a ton of cool stuff there.
What Do I Use For My Grimoire?
You can use anything for a grimoire! For a physical one, journals, binders, and notebooks are good. For digital ones, Notion, Tumblr, Docs, and even just your file folder are great.
