Maybe the reason why yotsuba Light and pre-kira Light is so vastly different in personality (he's more 'genuine' that is) is because yotsuba Light had L that kept him from feeling that mind-numbing boredom that pre-kira Light experienced prior to getting the death note.
Pre-kira Light literally had nothing to keep him entertained and that he was too powerless to change the broken justice system, so he's more closed-off and serious, literally just living through the motions like a dead man.
On the other hand, yotsuba Light met someone who's not just on par with his intelligence, but also one insufferable enough to annoy him that never made any dull moment possible with L around. Aside from that, yotsuba Light is literally working alongside the world's greatest detective helping him solve the world's hardest case that involved the justice system, so yeah, yotsuba Light really will take L's side of "justice" because detective L is legal whereas Kira's actions are not.

Today makes 13 (manga) and 10 (anime) years since Light Yagami died canonically, so I had to make a drawing in my poor boy’s memory. Funnily enough, I love how his story came to it’s conclusion and wouldn’t change it.
My arm is reaching out to him as I wanted to incorporate myself somehow, but just didn’t have the time or patience to actually draw my whole body 💀 I guess I wanted to express my desire to comfort him. This is the first time I’ve drawn anything really submerged in water. I’m proud of my attempt, looking at it is very relaxing.

Yeah yeah yeah yeah self-shipping and oc-insert shipping are valid and all but I don't think enough people realize the joy and the sheer untapped potential in pitting your OCs against your fictional blorbos and both of them immediately deciding the other's vibes are rancid

Concept: During the Yotsuba arc, Mosa forces Light (and subsequently L) to watch some new reality TV show. Light is super bored, but L gets INVESTED and he and Misa bond over it.

LAWLIGHT HEADCANONS it's easy to say that L and Light have a serious love/hate dynamic. one day they could be fisting eachother's faces, and the other they could be making out with visibly audible moaning noises. who needs breath am I right? Light tries to deny his love for L, although L can read him like a book. It's funny how his so-called rival makes him feel more emotions than Misa ever could. I believe that both L and Light are incapable of actually stating their love for one-another. To show the other their desire, they would either send gifts (L) or just kiss them straight away (Light). I'm not going to pretend like L doesn't buy Light thousands of gifts. He is a multi-billionare, of course his love language would be gift-giving. And as for light, his love language is showing it rather than saying it. We can't have lawlight without a bit of competition, right? They are both very competitive, meaning they try to one-up the other constantly. This can include board games, sports, and especially tickle fights. Light is usually the one to start them, but let's be for real... L finishes them. Light is just way too sensitive for his own good, meaning it's slightly embarrassing for him. Think of it. Light Yagami, the opposed 'god of the new world' and the NPA chief's genius son, ticklish? never heard of it. Or so you thought... I 100% believe that if Light never picked up the Death Note, both L and Light would be married in England somewhere. I'm not saying the Death Note should never come into play, because I believe that that's the only way L and Light would ever meet, since that's the only reason L came to Japan in the first place. I just believe that if it was never Light who picked it up, L and Light would've fallen in love, but GODDAMNIT RYUK. Flirting is a daily occurrence. The other party loves to see the other blush and lose their shit, ESPECIALLY in front of company. I think this goes for L. He loves to see how Light tries to stay composed in front of his father when L is subtly flirting with him. It's downright amusing and adorable to him. LET'S BE HONEST - during the handcuffs situation with Light and L, "Me, You and Steve" by Garfunkel and Oats would be a daily thing that Misa felt. I think Misa had suspicions that they fancied eachother in the beginning. Last but not least - I believe that Light admired L. He thought of him as a friend, and a companion. Light didn't want to harm L in any way, but Kira did. Kira believed L was in the way of creating a 'better world' for everyone else. LawLight will always be my favorite ship, and my comfort dynamic. Please comment or reblog what heacanons you want to see for Death Note next!

SUPER LONG LAWLIGHT DYNAMIC ANALYSIS RANT (THIS MOSTLY ONLY APPLIES TO THE ANIME)
It’s really not that serious, but there’s more to my thesis of L being a sub/bottom than just blorbo yaoi fuel. I‘ll call back to my post about L’s true emotional vulnerability that most viewers seem to miss, because on a surface level (especially when coming from the manga and when trusting the words of Obha at face value) you may see L as detached and cold. You’re supposed to think that L is unfeeling at FIRST but post-confinement/pre-yotsuba, the truth starts to seep out. L could have had Light convicted after seeing that no more criminals were dying since locking him up, but he didn’t. Even Aizawa admitted that it was enough evidence. You know it’s real when Aizawa agrees with Matsuda, lmfao.
Anyway, after this point, L and Light actually really start to bond. (I pretty much see lawlight as subtextual canon) L, not really needing to do this because of his access to surveillance, handcuffs himself to Light Yagami. He doesn’t want to be apart from him. I actually find it to be a comedically obvious act of desperation.
My point is, Light is winning the game, and L is letting him do it out of what I believe is love. L has found the one person in his life (besides maybe Naomi) that he really feels any sort of connection to, and therefore he would hate to watch that person die. L is inarguably a vulnerable character imo. If you rewatch the the series, outside of his internal monologues, he’s actually extremely soft-spoken and coy.
“Oh, uh, well it was nice meeting you”
“Light, please make Misa stop talking now.”
You get the point. He’s nervous. He’s super frail and holds himself very compactly, he walks with his eyes on the ground usually. He shakes when Aizawa lays a hand on him. He is terrified of shinigami. I think his coldness is an act to protect himself. I really do, because he knows how much things actually do affect him. In order to continue with cases, he has to pretend like none of it really matters to him. And he almost believes it at this point, too— hence his monster speech.
But then there’s Light Yagami. A worthy individual to truly understand L. He comes along, actually treats L like a human being (be it an act, I believe it still feels good to L, who has been treated like a robot his entire life), of course L is bound to at the very least see him as a friend.
I don’t believe L’s external behavior towards Light is an act. He didn’t have to be kind, he didn’t have to pretend it was a friendship. He had zero professional reason to do so. In fact, it very much made the case a harder one to solve. If we take L’s character at face value, he would have scrapped all of the fluffy shit (like asking Light to go get cake with him, telling Light he was his only friend knowing damn well Light wouldn’t budge regardless, etc.) Adding a friendship into the mix only complicates the process of trying to read Light.
As much as L the detective hates to lose, L the person is desperate. If he really hated to lose, why did he let himself? He’s submitting to Light’s will and THAT is what kills him. On the day he dies, he knows it will happen, but still, he treats Light with kindness. Sure, he asks him if he’s ever told the truth once in his life, but after that, he pretty much gives up prying. That’s it. He’s put his gun down. Since he’s going to die anyway, he might as well just enjoy being around Light. I know for a fact that he is smart enough to have come up with some sort of plan to convict Light post-Higuchi. There’s a book about that. But canonically, he didn’t do it. Notice also how L goes to Watari before he dies for comfort. L is really such a sad character.
The crux of his character is his submissiveness, hence why I’m such a proponent of that ship dynamic. Its not just a wet-dream, it’s something I sensed in their dynamic to begin with. It’s why I became an L simp, not the other way around.
Anyway, the anime is a genius adaptation and expansion on the original story imo. (At least up until L’s death— unfortunately it didn’t do the other Wammy’s boys any justice)
TLDR;
manga L- cold and domineering, hates to lose and mostly loses at first because Light outsmarts him
anime L- the very opposite and I LOVE IT
Look at me putting my 5 on the AP English literature exam to use! Also, I know I’m a huge L fan, but I am a Light kinnie and I love him as a protagonist in every possible anti-hero type way and would love to analyze him so let me know if yall want that.
Okay, class, any questions?

I watched Netflix's Death Note movie and I was genuinely shocked at how heterosexual it was. Absolutely no homoerotic subtext between Light and L. I genuinely believe that's one of the reasons it sucked so bad. L and Light's relationship was not fleshed out enough to ship them.
Light Yagami and L Lawliet are enemies, but theyre so much more. They are obsessed with each other. They are each other's only worthy friend and only worthy adversary.
Netflix Light and L are just enemies.

lawlight fic rec list
so i’m gonna do a series of these, starting with my favorite death note ship! make sure to pay attention to all warnings on these fics. enjoy! if you have a ship you’d like me to make a rec list for, please just send me an ask! i don’t want to be obnoxious, and i’m not saying they’re good, but i (slackjawbitch on ao3) have some lawlight fics up!
♡ = a favorite of kitty’s
angst
♡ 1. i’m drowning; please save me: L looks at Yagami Light and drowns. There is no other way to put it. As the days pass and blend into weeks, L looks at Yagami Light sitting next to him, the harsh lines of his face creased and determined, and he swallows water.
L looks at Yagami Light and he cannot breathe.
great characterization, always makes me very emo, and is probably a pretty major influence on my writing. one shot. 1,817 words.
2. always waiting for you just to cut to the bone: And then, breaking through the pounding in his head he hears what would be the last words out of that wretched man’s lips.
“I love you.”
fic for teh death note drama (2016) canon! title is unfortunately from a t*ylor sw*ft song (/silly) but this fic is so good and sad.
3. Our Bodies, Possessed By Light: L. Lawliet is a gifted photographer who believes he has understood the light and its secrets. Light Yagami is a young, unstable and slightly crooked model. Together, they kill time.
modeling and photography au. make sure to read all teh tags and warnings for this one; there’s nothing gross, but some potentially triggering subjects for some people are in here. multi chapter. 81,218 words.
4. Hearts and Spades: Which would you choose? Love or death? RaitoL, slight AU.
short but sweet piece featuring that classic fanfiction dot net era vibe, an emo-ass playing card metaphor (/pos), and a recounting of l’s death scene that made me sad over him all over again (also /pos). and also light being obnoxious, but it’s death note, so that’s usually a given, lol. one shot. 1,801 words.
5. Not Quite Drowning: Sometimes Light ponders happiness. L/Light
a short lawlight and light character study. i like it a lot, and i don’t usually like light, so that should tell you something about how well i think it’s written! one shot. 424 words.
♡ 6. Water, water, water: In the bath, they forget they’re a detective and a suspect; they remove these identities along with their clothes, layer by layer until there are only the handcuffs left. And them; facing the other in the eerie calmness of their bathroom.
At least, it’s how Light sees it.
i really love this one! make sure to read teh tags, as eating disorders and drugs are mentioned, for example. angst with a happy ending! one shot. 3,504 words.
fluff
1. Silver Bells: Silver bells...silver bells...
They’ve made it. Everything is okay now, when they’re dancing in the candlelight.
really, really cute! i recommend it as a palate cleanser to make you feel better after reading a sad one, lol. one shot. 1,255 words.
♡ 2. New Year’s Eve: "I've seen fireworks before," he says. "This is... so much... more."
just a cute little new year’s eve lawlight fireworks show! this one is also from 2009 which is kinda cool to me, haha. i like this author’s descriptive language a lot. one shot. 507 words.
♡ 3. Do Gay Penguins Go to Hell?: Too many New Year snacks bring about a family discussion between L, Raito and their daughter about healthy diet, common sayings and nature of good and evil. And gay penguins, of course. AU
a really darling kid fic, based on teh stupid, homophobic controversy over that adorable kids’ book about teh gay penguin couple. one shot. 3,791 words.
4. A Feeling: It's LxLight fluff! This takes place after Light was confined and lost his memories, chained to L. : D SO YUS. SOME FLUFF FOR YAH D: Hope you leik it :D
very cute “l and light cuddle and kiss” fic, written by a scene kid in 2008, which is extra points with me! one shot. 1,006 words.
alright! i will add to this rec list as i find more fics, and i would love it if people would send in their favorite lawlight fics!

YOU LIKING L AND NAOMI AND TELLING ME THE SHIP NAME IS SO SLAY ITS SO MYSPACE IT IS SO SCENEKID
AAKAVAJASHI SCREAMING "SO MYSPACE SO SCENEKID" I AM SHAKING YOU VISCERALLY /POS
IM GLAD YOU KNOW THE SHIP NAME NOW BECAUSE YOURE RIGHT AND THEYRE AMAZING AND I LOVE THEM GOD i'm gonna use this as an excuse to ramble about them now because god i need to ramble about them more they deserve it
i would do a full length analysis but i am too sick to do proper words so bullet point headcanon time instead WWOOOOOO: - i think L lawliet is the most bisexual aroace-spectrum man on planet earth and naomi is the most aroace-spectrum bisexual woman (no i'm not projecting wdym sshhshshsh nuhuh). yes the switching of which label comes first is important. L would worship a woman at a moment's notice but could never fully commit to it unless he truly has reason to and naomi misora would never worship somebody at a moment's notice unless she has reason to fully commit to it. - this is also why i think their dynamic works so well because i think naomi could push her way into becoming an equal to L. she would NOT respect that little shit and would only ever do what he says if she has to (and she'd probably still find ways around stuff to do things her own way). L would notice this and most likely still be a little bitch about everything but i think in a situation where they're forced to really work together on a case, L would put his little bitch persona down just for a moment and realize "wow she actually really is on my level." - plus that's seeing L when he really leans into his little shit persona. i feel like he'd already have a high respect for naomi and they could definitely have a classic slow romance arc instead, but i like both ideas and i think they both work. idk i just like the sillies. :3333 - I ALSO JUST FEEL LIKE NAOMI IS ALREADY A LOT LIKE LIGHT?? she reminds me of both a pre-death note light yagami and also a light that's been put through different circumstances, which makes her a bit more inclined to stay in that pre-death note light yagami field. i totally feel like if she had access to the death note, she'd do the same thing as light, except the process might take longer. i just feel like she'd be a lot more hesitant and cautious about things but that there'd be a chance of her doing the same thing as light. - PLUS ISN'T IT JUST SILLY TO THINK OF THEM AS A POWER COUPLE?? OR JUST L WORSHIPPING THIS GODDESS OF A WOMAN?? OR L GETTING OWNED BY THIS GODDESS?? OR NAOMI GIGGLING AT THE WEIRD DETECTIVE'S LITTLE PUNS??? OR HER SEEING THAT DIFFERENT SIDE OF L AFTER HE PUTS HIS LITTLE SHIT PERSONA DOWN AND REALIZES SHE COULD ACTUALLY WORK WELL WITH THIS WEIRD GUY DESPITE HOW STUBBORN HE GETS???? - CHAT ARE YOU SEEING THE VISION - PLEASE TELL ME IM NOT THE ONLY ONE - I NEED TO SEE THEM SLOW DANCING OR HAVING THEIR BACKS PRESSED AGAINST EACH OTHER IN THE DRAMATIC DETECTIVE/FBI POSE OROROROROROR - CHAT PLEAAAAAASE

back in your asks unfortunately you can’t get rid of me. i’m going to keep enablign you.
you bringing up the kr version of hurricane and the martyr complex light has in it is great bc what fascinates me about hurricane as a song is how radically different it is in different languages? as we all know in the manga light has this horrible visceral reaction to what he’s done. he looks like he’s gonna be sick when he has that guy hit by a truck. when ryuk turns up he admits that he’s been losing weight and barely sleeping. but the musicals differ so massively in how light is portrayed? because in english light seems to have this very strong sense of justice from the start - in where is the justice he denounces the corporations corrupting the legal system and asks “how can we turn away and say that’s just the way things are?” and then in hurricane he hardly seems upset at all by what he’s done. he seems vaguely surprised at how easy it was and then turns around and sings about how he’s got this insanely strong, perfect, untraceable power that he’s going to use to deliver righteous retribution. BUT then the jp versions of witj and hurricane are much less certain and light seems more horrified and then hopeful. the focus is on creating a perfect world, not necessarily punishment. he’s more a glass half full kinda guy. and then it changes AGAIN in the kr. it’s so fascinating he is a completely different version of himself in all three versions and i just need to ask. what are your opinions on this. am i making this up. do you understand how my brain is firing
you are NOT making this up and i DO understand how your brain is firing. listen. listen. in that same post about light/achilles (intertextual comparison not ship) (although?) and prompted by a response from someone else cool i reposted these tweets (which you have literally just seen because i shoved them at you but ill post them again so everyone can see)
Tumblr media
to me it is like, very key that every iteration of light yagami SEEMS really different. in their behaviour, their values, what it takes to push them to acting and how they react, etc - obv you've brought up light as he appears in the three most well known languages the musical exists in, but i also am a huge fan of comparing his animanga self (already two different iterations to an extent) with the tv drama, which has maybe the most distinctive version of light out of all of them and which i BELIEVE? drew criticism? but i am not 100% because i was not here for this because i watched death note for the first time in fucking february. because i am hip with the kids. #rad
anyway this is part of a much larger ramble of mine that i am not really doing justice here but i actually really like that that version of light is so incredibly different - and yet he really isnt, somehow, because he ends up not only at the same ending but recognisable as the same person. that's what i think is so interesting! these differences are undeniably there and they're BIG - as you said, between musicals he ranges from being a vengeful guy on a power trip to being an idealist with a martyr complex, and you'd think those are two totally different sets of core values. between animanga vs tv drama he goes from being this cool and collected hyper prepared cynical idealist to being a depressed nihilist who's working extremely hard to shed his own ability so he doesn't have to deal with the pain of caring. again, these seem, and factually are, completely different sets of values.
and yet they're actually perfectly reconcilable. every iteration of light no matter how distinct and no matter how much their core values seem to oppose or contradict each other ends up reconciling into the same guy partway through the story, where all of these different directions he's been going in all converge. his priorities even out - regardless of if it was the power trip that came first or the desire for the perfect world, they balance ultimately and coexist. regardless of whether his idealism led him to bitter radicalisation or nihilism, they also balance ultimately and coexist. is light affected by his first murder? yes - how does it show it? that differs, but none of the lights are actually deluded enough to think that murder is good. they all think it's bad but defensible and justifiable and then visibly cope with that fact in different ways. light looks like a VERY different man depending on which of his values are being pushed to the fore in a given interpretation, but all that really does is serve to spell out exactly how complex he is internally once you watch them all converge at around similar points in the story, even when at the barest and most uncharitable interpretation he just looks like a maniacal serial killer with a delusional god complex. this is why i like him so much unfortunately
also none of this applies to netflix light who is irreconcilable and irredeemable. and white
