Kanej Fic Recs: The "Figuring Out Intimacy" Trope

If you're anything like me, you're a glutton for very specific fic tropes applied to your very favorite OTPs (and we all know my OTP of OTPs is kanej). To this end, ao3 tags are your best friend. When you see that delicious combination of tags like "emotional hurt/comfort" and "healing" and "pining" with some sort of moody, vaguely poetic title, that's the good shit right there. That is a MEAL, and you are about to feast.

Anyways. I'm getting off track.

I come to you today with more than just an offering to the potluck; I am here to open up the doors to the whole damn buffet. That's right - FIC RECS. Specifically, fic recs that scratch the particular itch for "post-canon fics where Kaz and Inej figure out how to touch each other, but really the Physical Armor is always symbolic of the Emotional Armor that they have to learn to lower if they hope to ever really Be Together." Do you know what I'm talking about? If you know, you know. It's kanej figuring out intimacy. It's touch, but it's about the way they touch each other's souls. It's a fandom-classic fic trope. FEAST AWAY. (And feel free to reblog and add any of your own favorites! This is certainly not an exhaustive list, just some favorites of mine that fit the bill.)

gundham for the ask game?? i lov him

GUNDHAM GODDAMN TANAKA MY FIRST LOVE IN DANGANRONPA

Favorite thing about him: His dialect is sososo fun and interesting to analyze. I think he's the main reason I became so obsessed with analyzing and making up my own canon compliant dialect for Vivia. Gundham sparked that fire of dissecting metaphors n analogies and translating them to better understand his behavior and how he conveys his thoughts and feelings through speech. It's incredibly entertaining to write for him, so much so that about two years ago I made my own ask blog for him being in Dead By Daylight's universe. Gotta combine the brainrots of the time somehow.

Least favorite thing about him: Out of all the members of the Ultimate Despair, Gundham feels the least likely to ever end up on their side. It has just never sat right with me that he would fall into despair that easily in the anime, especially since he fought so hard against it in the game. I understand that Chiaki meant a lot to her classmates, but her death doesn't feel like the straw that should break the camel's back for Gundham, notably because he's the one who will literally fight to the death to revive everyone else's morale. The anime is a guilty pleasure of mine, but I refuse to believe that he'd give in to despair that easy. I like his Ultimate Despair design though, it's rad. Too bad we only get to see it once.

Favorite line: He has soooooooooo many iconic and fantastic lines it's not fair to choose one, but I will restrain myself just this once. "Because I, the one who has claimed dominion over evil, am the Ultimate Weapon! I am he who cuts the insolent catalyst which flows out from the chaos with the sword of victory… It's only fitting that I deserve to be called the Ultimate Weapon…!" The fact that he called himself the Ultimate Weapon because he utilized the funhouse's secret after he discovered it in order to kill Nekomaru HURTS REAL BAD. He planted hints to him being the culprit throughout the entire trial because it was never his intent to get away with his murder at all, especially since he fully expected to be the victim himself. He and Nekomaru sacrificed themselves so that the others could live on. I cry.

BROTP: Gundham and Gonta are such a sweet duo in UTDP and Summer, they deserve so many more interactions. They get to exchange their love of all different types of animals with each other until they're walking National Geographic magazines.

OTP: SONDAM! They match each other's dorkiness to a T. Autumn is their season and nobody can take it away from them. Horror movie dates are always a pleasure. They're obnoxious talkers in the theaters, but I'd let them ramble to their heart's content.

NOTP: I'm the type of person who's chill with a lotta different pairings if the shipper(s) make it work. However, one pair I can never imagine being romantically involved is Gundham and Hiyoko. He doesn't give two shits about her bullying him for his eccentrics, but he definitely greatly disapproves of her abuse toward animals. She's trying to better herself post-game, but it'll definitely take a while for her misdeeds to be forgiven by Gundham and they can work toward being on friendly terms.

Random headcanon: Due to isolating himself from others, Gundham never really took the time to question his romantic orientation. That is, until he was accepted into Hope's Peak Academy and was surrounded by other students. He swiftly came to terms with his romantics towards certain people, as sparse as he shows it. Nekomaru and Sonia definitely pushed those unknown feelings into deeper consideration, as he admittedly crushed on both of them at some point and has ultimately fallen for Sonia. He fights with himself every now and then over his feelings, but overall he views his orientation as simply natural, unchanged by time. In regards to his asexuality, he occasionally makes comments to conceal his distaste for raunchy things and attempt to fit in, pushed into doing so by his insecurities, but he recognizes its his true nature to abstain from such desires. Intimacy is romantic for him, and that's all that it has to be for him to be happy.

Unpopular opinion: I have no idea if any of my thoughts could really be classified as unpopular, but I'll toss something unusual out. Connecting to what I've stated earlier, I wish Gundham was shown fighting back more against the brainwashing in the anime. If they had the time, it'd be interesting to see the absolute extremes Junko would have to go through to crush Gundham's unwavering spirit. We could get real dark by having his mom killed in front of him. This forces him to accept that without her, only nature is on his side now, as humanity is beyond saving and what he's committing as an Ultimate Despair is a mercy killing.

Song(s) I associate with him: Kyrie by Mr. Mister cause the angelic imagery makes me sob profusely aughhhh... Eighth Wonder by Lemon Demon and When You Die by MGMT are runner-ups!

@mj220991 who, along with @mercipourleslivres and @aysekira is my non-danmei novel guru, has informed me that Wishing You Eternal Happiness by Peng Lai Ke is getting an adaptation.

I am both excited and terrified because except for Dreamer in the Spring Boudoir, it’s my favorite non-danmei novel and so it would be glorious to see it on screen if it’s done right, like Shen Li or Ever Night 1 or Lost You Forever 1, but so often adaptations are disasters (see Dreamer, actually.)

Anyway, I was thinking of who my ideal cast for the OTP would be and here is mine:

I am not lying when I say the sole reason why I watched One Piece was because of Roronoa Zoro and his absolutely gorgeous actor

* Legend of Shen Li is almost universally liked. I don't know that I encountered a real hater. Don't turn that into sky high expectations that can't be met, though. It's simply a solid xanxia romance with a very strong landing - 1 full length episode dedicated to the happy ending, instead of the xanxia standard 1 minute. The most high god in the universe x demon general who is engaged to heaven's notorious playboy that's terrified of her. and who is temporarily a chicken. (just go with it) The main couple have chemistry & are very capable actors. Rarely do I make it thru a xanxia without ever being consumed with rage at some awful thing the plot has one of the main couple perpetrate on the other... but this one passed! The main actress is convincing as an immortal warrior.

* Blossoms in Adversity is NOT universally liked, tbh it got almost no traction on tumblr. But despite all its flaws I found myself watching it eagerly. I am a sucker for historical costume dramas with feminist themes - if you enjoyed Dream of Splendor, this one might appeal. After all the men in the family are exiled and they are stripped of their noble status, the main wives, concubines, children, and servants of a large official's household have to figure out a way to survive on their own. Without the guidance (and yoke) of men. The strength of the drama is that it isn't easy - these women are not all kind & smart & selfless. They're complicated people and a product of their environment. But watching them slowly come together was so satisfying, and how all the women begin to explore an identity beyond the strict roles they held in that manor. It's so direct about how much power men had over their wives in that era and what that means for these women. The main otp will appeal if you like ships of 2 mature adults who have their own goals and respect each other as equals, who are supportive but don't step on each other's independence. The FL's practicality was so pleasing to me. It just dropped it's final episodes via Express.

* The Spirealm available legally now on Viki, if your tastes run to censored gay romance. And if you like mystery/ horror and like fiction that asks, what is reality (and does the definition of 'real' matter). Like in korean bl Love for Love's Sake, the protagonist enters a game world and ends up caring about that world. (unlike LFLS, a distinct lack of kissing with tongue)

* In Blossom - Chinese het web novel vibes just exploding onto the screen. Childhood sweathearts torn apart years ago, now he's a rich noble while she's poor but he still wants to marry her as promised. (She is less sure about this.... then she gets her body swapped by this crazy chick who really REALLY wants to marry the ML. who, ooops gets murdered on their wedding night.) So now FL is in crazy chick's body and the #1 suspect for her gruesome murder is ML, that childhood sweetheart who showed up out of the blue to propose. and happens to be the top candidate in running to marry the crown princess 🤔🤔🤔 . She thinks he (tried to) kill her. He thinks she's dead and hates the lady she's stuck impersonating. Spoiler: they fall in love.

* Amidst a Snowstorm of Love - Slice of life soft cdrama, if you like that kind of thing. Developing relationship for like 30 episodes about 2 professional snooker players. Relaxing vibes, sweet romance. They're both kind, talented, and capable. They're good for each other and really humanly awkward about starting a relationship. You don't watch this kinda drama for dramatic tension, you just chill with it and wind down after a hard day. It's baked-in that they'll get married at the end.

Camp Freedom is an old abandoned corpo resort from the 2040s along Lake Tahoe, taken over by the various Nomads clans passing through, becoming a popular recreational spot for all Nomads families, now run by statics from the Jodes. It was in this place, a little out of the way of deckchairs and potential visitors, that Virgile and Panam sat to watch the sunset. He'd told her stories of his childhood, and she'd wanted to see what it was like. Sitting on a bench, Panam's head on his shoulder, Virgile grinned, happy at this moment, so perfect. Plunging his hand into the inside of his jacket, he pulled out a small wooden box, weathered, polished a bit by the sand, with no embellishment other than an engraving in the shape of a vague S. Still curious, Panam straightened up, left the scoop of her boyfriend's neck to observe the container and already reached out to touch it, to take it. "Is this for me?" She smiles, amused, but her voice betrays a form of surprise.

Virgile doesn't answer right away. His azure eyes are riveted on the box for a moment, immersed in his memories, before he jumps up and puts the box between Panam's and his own. "It's a gift I've wanted to give you for some time, a present dear to me. Open it."

Inside, on a bed of faded blue synthetic silk, lay a necklace—a simple gold chain with a small heart as a pendant. Panam ran her finger over the heart with delicacy while Virgile watches her tenderly and then strokes her hand.

"This belonged to my mother. My father gave it to her after I was born because it was a miracle we survived because of … you know, her heart and mine. I always saw her with it around her neck." a wistful smile passed over her face.

For a few moments, he remembers his mother sitting in her armchair, him at her feet reading, or the two of them side by side watching an old film. Her blue eyes were like his, and she looked at him with tenderness. He had never forgotten his mother, who was gone too soon. But he realizes Panam is waiting for him to continue talking, so he shakes his head to compose himself. "Sometime before she passed away, she gave it to me, telling me I'd give in turn one day. I've always kept it, and the box has been one of the few things I've been able to take with me." he felt his beloved's hand squeeze him, a wave of gentleness washing over him to extinguish the sadness of his memories. "For a long time, I thought I'd keep this necklace for myself, that I'd end up alone. I never thought I could be happy after my forced separation from the Jodes. NetWatch, my life in Night City reinforced that idea."

He looks up at Panam, but she never leaves his sight. Then, she strokes his cheek to comfort him. "Hey, that's all in the past." The warmth of her hand and the softness of her voice remind him why they're here, why this gift. A sigh of ease escapes his mouth before he continues. "What I mean is, I never thought I could be happy one day, or find someone. And today, I'm here, with you, at the place of my best memories. I'm happy."

Placing the necklace back in its box, Panam hugs Virgile and kisses their cheek and nose before really kissing him. She finally settles back into the hollow of his neck, where she places a final kiss, and closes her eyes. "I am too, you know. And it means a lot to me that you'd give me this gift."

They remain like this, alone in the world on the shores of Lake Tahoe, as the sun races on, giving way to night. A light breeze brings them back to reality, and Panam straightens up with a mischievous air he always finds irresistible. "Can you put it around my neck?"

"Wait, I wanted to tell you one more thing." He takes the box in his hand and stares at it, even more nervous. "There's a tradition in my old clan. When you give an object of high sentimental value like this, it means … let's say it's a promise that you want to spend your life with the other person."

He feels Panam's hand move up his chin to meet her golden gaze, but he's unable to guess what she's thinking. " Virgile, are you… Are you proposing to me?" he nods a little too quickly and loudly because he's so nervous. Then put it around my neck, silly."

The last word breaks as tears fill his face. Tears of happiness as he smiles, then laughs…

Favorite thing about them: The story she stars in is one that feels close to being the point of view of an actual child. She just gets lost in the woods, finds a house that is empty, eats the owner's food, breaks one of the chairs and sleeps in one of their beds, and when the house owners return, she simply runs away and the story is over.

There is no villains or heroes in this scenario, is just the tale of a child who acted without thinking on the consequences (like all kids normally do). And sometimes, those are all the ingredients you need in a fairy tale.

Least favorite thing about them: That one of the adaptations of her tale is the racist cartoon short "Goldilocks and the Jiving Bears" from the 1940s, that is now part of the infamous Censored Eleven collection. Research it at your own risk.
