This post is about about weight loss and taking weight loss drugs. If that's not for you please move along.
My doctor prescribed me a drug called phentermine for weight loss. It's a stimulant appetite suppressant. I've been on it for 3 weeks now and I've knocked a full point off my BMI! I was prescribed this drug for medical reasons. I have PCOS, a hormone imbalance which causes me to gain weight. Basically I produce too much testosterone, so my body tries to compensate by making me gain fat because it stores estrogen. My dumb shit misguided body gives me insulin resistance on purpose to make me gain weight, so although I'm not diabetic obviously I'm at high risk for developing diabetes. Over the past 5 years I've gained about 30lbs and I finally tipped the scale into obesity. I've been seeking medical help for my weight for almost a year at this point. I failed metformin twice (extreme side effects) and then I was prescribed ozempic/monjauro/wagovy but my insurance company said I didn't need it :) because I don't have diabetes :). Finally we settled on this drug because I can get it, it's cheap, and it's a stimulant. I already take stimulant drugs for my ADHD so I know I react well to them.
Basically I don't want to eat as much. I'm comfortably eating ~1200-1400 calories a day. It's made tolerable the mental and physical anguish of living with a calorie deficit for an extended period of time. Phentermine is half of Fen-Phen, a popular drug in the 90s which killed a whole lot of people by giving them heart valve problems. Get this! It is highly suspected that Fen-Phen killed my own father in 2001. Wild huh. Phentermine is the non-lethal half of the drug, which is obviously the first fucking thing I asked hahaha. I can see why people took it though--shit works amazing.

Pcos is really hard to deal with. It has fucked me up so bad. From facial hair to hyperpigmented private parts, it has given me everything. I'm so fucking insecure. It's hard not to be😭 I wanna look pretty. My doc gave me heavy meds I was nauseous the whole time I took the tablet. It was hell. Besides i had severse foodpipe ulcers. Now I'm off tablet. I'm just so much so worried about my hair only. I also had to have dandruff!!! Just my life ugh. I had hair down upto my knees. I had to cut it short as it got tangled all the time and it made extra hairloss. Im jsut 18. Haven't even joined university yet. Other girls are pretty ugh. Sorry I jsut ranted. I'm tempted to just shave my head at times. I cry every night lmao.

I never want my pcos girlies to feel silenced???😚😚 first of all….Oh the facial hair has been kicking my ass since i was 15 and im 21 girl 😭😭 but i will say, at 19-20 it peaked for me, i hit rock bottom and i do think that the external stress of uni pushed it but i also thing it’s a genuine like canon event for us pcos girlies, i truly believe that until ur pcos really gets you down, you can’t rise up from it. i was the biggest id ever been, lost all my hair, facial hair was insane!!
i mean this in the best way, because I’ve been there girl, i still am there, i get laser on my face and neck, i wash my hair and like it gives me anxiety just washing my hair and seeing the loss, feeling the loss of density, like you i had hair down my back my whole life and i cut it over a year ago and now it has grown back thicker at least bc mine was all straggly at the worst point😭 i KNOW your pain.
BUT everybody always told me that the older i get it will level out and trust me it does!! and it did. im 21 and things have settled, we can only go through this process. i promise you, it gets better. my hair is still thinner but it shines and i put love into it!! i oil my scalp every time i wash it, I’ve been doing it for 8 months religiously.
and girl you are pretty!! i used to read the r/pcos thread a lot bc it made me feel less alone and like, i saw a post once venting about how hard it is having so much maintenance, to wake up and have to shave your face, to be conscious, to have to cover hair loss. that constant weight of having to get up and do all these steps that you feel other women don’t. i know the frustration, i have bumps and marks and body hair that makes me sob if I don’t shave it and then I look down in the shower and it hits me. but it’s also okay to pay for the things like laser or waxing, or learning how to wax etc, we have to manage in any way, we are allowed to prioritise and do things that make us feel beautiful bc we deserve it. we have to adapt rather than hoping it might just disappear, and we have to accept it🥺🩷
but diet is huge!! at least try and have a protein heavy breakfast!! 30g of protein is such an important aim, I promise that makes such a difference. definitely try not to have a lot of sugar in the morning. i only drink water or spearmint tea. matcha tea can be good bc it’s better then coffee, but I never drink caffeine because it’s so bad for us pcos girls especially on an empty stomach!! try and eat good fats!! and also integrating exercise!! and also MANAGE STRESS BABE I MEAN IT
but you are still beautiful, effortlessly and with your ways of coping. there is nothing wrong with us!! don’t be sorry for ranting at all, i also wanted to shave my head at the height of my weight loss i had a huge bald spot and it’s still kinda there 😭 i know this shit is REAL
but definitely check in with a doctor if you can get any advice/meds that could help, maybe a birth control pill could help you but again I don’t recommend that due to my own experiences bc it gave me severe acne, migraines and other things but tbf my hair was lucious😜, pcos is a lot of trial and error and seeing what might work for you.
as far as tips go!! look into Indian/arab/ayuverdic routines on TikTok/youtube!!! look up ways to massage your scalp!!!

actually u know i'm kinda bothered by the claim that hirsutism is the primary and most important way to diagnose someone with pcos, because in my experience and in the experience of basically everyone else i know with pcos (in and outside of my family), that isn't remotely the case.
and in fact, after looking through the wiki page myself, no where did it state that hirsutism is a primary method of diagnosis. like. there are Other Tests They Do For It. hirsutism might tip someone off to the possibility of pcos, but there are lots of reasons for why someone may have more body hair than is """normal""" for a person of that assigned sex. look here at the wiki blurb. look at it.

you know what tipped off my diagnosis? as a teenager i menstruated for almost 2mos straight. then a few years later i stopped menstruating completely, and gained 30lbs in a month period when i'd been rail thin my entire life until that point and nothing had really changed about my diet/exercise.
without the sudden weight gain and loss of menstruation, i'm pretty sure my family would've assumed i did not inherit my mom's pcos, bc i have no other visible symptoms. we did the ultrasound to confirm the existence of the cysts.
my mom also doesn't have the hirsutism symptom... but she does have the weight gain, and the cysts. my sister that also has the diagnosis is in the same boat. every other person i've met with a pcos diagnosis has not had the hirsutism symptom.
is it a thing that someone's gotten their diagnosis through that symptom? undoubtedly. i have seen a few people with pcos that haven't done hrt that are naturally able to grow full beards. but like. if that were the case, considering how common pcos most likely is ??? it would be So Much More Noticeable in society.
inb4- yeah i know wiki is a "starting point" but if the starting point doesn't list a thing, then it's probably not actually as big a deal as it's being made out to be

Weight Loss Tips For Pcos

PCOS or polycystic ovarian syndrome is referred to a condition in which cysts develop on the ovaries. Between 4–20% of women in their reproductive phase of life may suffer from this condition. This condition is characterised by hormonal imbalances, insulin resistance, inflammation, etc. All these together can make weight loss difficult, especially for those women who also have thyroid disorders. PCOS is also the leading cause of infertility in women.
Following are some tips for losing weight with PCOS:
Reducing carbohydrate intake
PCOS is often associated with insulin resistance (35% to 80% cases). In insulin resistance, the cells of the body are unable to absorb glucose from blood in normal amounts, leading to high blood sugar levels. This in turn can lead to higher conversion of sugar to fat in the body and weight gain. Reducing simple carbohydrates intake can directly lead to lowering of insulin levels, thereby reducing carb conversion to fat. At the same time, consuming a low GI (glycemic index) diet reduces insulin resistance and fat storage around the belly area.
Increase protein intake
Protein intake has been shown to improve blood sugar management by giving a feeling of fullness for longer. In addition, it also helps in losing weight. But remember that total protein intake should not exceed more than 40% of total calorie intake, as very high intakes can cause increased stress on the kidneys.
Include nuts and seeds
Nuts and seeds are powerhouses of healthy fats, vitamins and minerals like omega 3 fatty acids, zinc, iron, selenium, etc. Seeds like pumpkin, sesame, flax and sunflower have been shown to bring about a balance between the reproductive hormones.
Reduce sugar consumption
Refined sugar, jaggery, honey all are high calorie foods with high glycemic indices and thus should be avoided. Added sugars also increase weight and insulin resistance. Research also shows that women with PCOS have higher blood sugar spikes on ingestion of sugar as compared to women without PCOS.
Get physically active
Exercise has been shown to help at multiple levels; be it weight loss, improved insulin sensitivity, better hormonal health, etc. Therefore it is important to invest at least 30–40 minutes daily for exercise.
Get adequate sleep
Inadequate sleep increases levels of hormones like cortisol and ghrelin, that increase the feeling of hunger. It also leads to increased inflammation in the body. Our bodies carry out repair of damaged muscles and detoxification while we are asleep. Thus getting enough sleep is an important part of not just your weight loss, but also your health journey.

My Goals for this Month
1. Brush my teeth at least two times a day. I know this may seem gross for others the fact that I hardly brushed my teeth before, but depression is real. People go through stuff that forces them to not take care of themselves and thankfully all my teeth are still intact and are not too yellow. They're still good. Now it's about making this habit more of an automatic routine.
2. Drink a glass of water when I wake up everyday. I don't know why but it makes me feel better and more refreshed even though morning breath and water is disgusting, lol.
3. Workout at least three times per weak. I was thinking of waking up everyday at 5am to do an hour of working out whether I do strength or cardio. As a woman with PCOS, I really need to enable this immediately. Not only for weight loss, but for my mental health.
4. Eat healthier. I'm not gonna deprive myself of my favorite foods, but they're not gonna be the main thing that I eat. I really like cake, but I'm willing to sacrifice it and have just a slice a week or every two weeks or longer.
5. Get at least 6k steps in. With work, I usually hit more than that, but on days that I am not able to, I'll either go for a walk or do indoor walking. I will have resting days, especially when my body starts telling me that it needs it.
6. Create a (face) self care routine. I know nothing about facial self care, so I will be doing some research and it will take me a while to get my routine but I will be updating y'all and sending little tips for those who wanna start their own self care routine.
