holy shit I did NOT realize how popular my "I will remove my teeth, for I want to remain kind despite my anger" quote is. I just googled it for fun to see what would come up, a bunch of people are quoting it not knowing who its from, an artist called Kuma made an album titled that, so bizzare
#also people are misatributing the quote to kuma and the first google result for the quote attributes it to them#which is kind of upsetting but not a huge deal whatever#its cool it seems to have entered culture like that#i get very mixed feelings about those instances where something I made got WAY more popular than i expected and#people are reposting it or using it without attributing it to me#i both feel bad when stuff isnt credited to me but also good that my art has expanded beyond my reach#its out of my control kind of and other people have it now#which IS what i want for my art and how i generally think art should be#but it is also obviously causes some anxiety to lose control and really full ownership of something that is yours#i think also there is anxiety about something of mine being taken by someone bigger than me#since they can just claim it as their own and most people will know them as the origin#not talking specifically about this quote btw just any of my work#ive definetly been thinking about that hbomberguy vid lol#i hope any of this made sense im a little high rn

navigation : midnight records! the starlight EP! the mha EP!
── .✦ "STUBBORN HEART" ─ Bakugo Katsuki
for some reason i was beefing with mha (dont ask me even i dk why) but we made up sooo here is a lil bakugo content (i missed u boom boom boy) content : one shot. fluff. bakugo being in denial. 658 words
Katsuki Bakugo prided himself on his unshakeable concentration and determination. Feelings were a distraction, a disturbance that had no place in his life while he strived to be the best hero. Yet lately, he was thinking about you for no reason at all.
It began innocently enough—a little joint training here, a mission there. But soon enough, he grew aware of the faint catch in his breath when you laughed, the involuntary tightening of his fists when others stood too close. He brushed these aside as minor irritations, attributing them to anything but the feelings growing that he would not admit.
"Dammit," he growled under his breath, closing his locker perhaps a bit harder than strictly necessary. "What the hell is wrong with me?"
His internal struggle did not go unnoticed. Kirishima, ever the perceptive friend, lifted an eyebrow as he approached. "Yo, Bakugo. You alright? You've been kinda tense lately."
"Mind your own business, Shitty Hair," Bakugo responded, the ends of his ears tinting a light pink. "I'm fine."
But our poor boy wasn't okay. Each encounter with you made him increasingly flustered, increasingly disturbed. He caught himself analyzing each word you'd say, each look you'd give him. Were you being nice? Or was something else going on? Not knowing ate at him, feeding his annoyance.
One evening, after a particularly intense training session, he spotted you giggling with Kaminari. A sharp, unwelcome pang of jealousy stabbed him in the chest. His vision narrowed, and the next thing he knew, he was stalking over, his usual scowl darker than normal.
"Hey, Dunce Face," he bellowed, causing you and Kaminari to step back. "Can't you just leave people alone?"
Kaminari blinked, looking confused. "Uh, we were just talking, man."
"Go talk somewhere else," Bakugo growled, his eyes darting towards you briefly before he looked away. "Some of us need to focus."
You observed him, your eyes a blend of amusement and interest. "Alright, Bakugo?"
"I'm fine," he snarled, the lie evident to everyone but him. "Just. get out of my way."
As he stalked away, his mind reeled. Why should he care who you talked to? Why should it infuriate him so? The questions circled and circled, offering no solace.
He couldn't sleep that night. Whenever he tried to close his eyes, your face would pop up, and with it, that infuriating warm sensation in his chest. He snarled, pressing his face into his pillow. "This is stupid," he muttered. "I'm not some love-struck dumbass."
Yet denial could take him only so far. The more he struggled against it, the more powerful the feelings became, until finally he could no longer hold it in.
Backing you into the hallway after class, he took a deep breath, his normal confidence trembling. "Listen," he started, his voice rough. "I don't know how to say this without making myself sound like a damn idiot. I like you. Not in a friendly way. And it's driving me insane."
You blinked, taking in his words. "Bakugo."
"I'm no good at this kind of thing," he went on, staring immutably at the floor. "But I had to tell you. Do what you like with that information."
There was a pause between you, then you edged closer, reaching up to tip his chin up so his eyes met yours. "You're an idiot," you whispered, a smile pulling on your lips. "But I like you too." Relief flooded him, though he would never acknowledge it. "Good," he muttered, a small, real smile cracking his habitual scowl. "About time."
In that instant, Bakugo Katsuki realized that maybe, just maybe, letting someone into his stubborn heart wasn't as terrifying as he thought.

Ficbook.net and Unauthorized Translations - An Update
Update to the update: some of the fics have been removed! 🎉 This happened before I finished this write-up even!
You may have seen this post last night about some CoD X Reader fics having unauthorized translations posted to the Russian site ficbook.net. @karlachismylife was monumental in helping me understand what's going on, and there's some explanation in that link from her POV as well.
Basically - multiple people have copied and translated fanfics into Russian and hosted them on ficbook.net. They're rough translations, some going as far as to use literal translations for turns of phrase. Most likely, they were run through a translation software (Google Translate or similar) and then roughly edited. (Juju mentioned that there is a subset of jobs in Russia where that is your job description. 😖)
Most of them have come from Tumblr posts, some from AO3. Very few had attribution beyond "tagging" the original author. (Aka - no consent was given for these translations.)
@syoddeye took the time to compile a list found here (google sheet). At the time of writing, 65 fics CoD x Reader fics were found - we know there's more but we only have so many knives in a day. (Sy did not look into slash fics either.)
Authors that have been tagged in the comments: I'm sorry you found out this way. I wanted to tell you in person, but given Tumblr's likelihood of thinking I was spamming you, I felt that this was the best option to alert you, provide you with options, and let you determine how you wish to move forward.
So what can be done?
If you already have an account, please report the fics! I'm told that spamming reports gets it taken down. Also consider messaging the author and ask them to remove them - they do not have the author's consent to publish them.
If you want to make an account and report the linked fics, you can. I have chosen not to, because I don't want to give Ficbook any extra support I otherwise might by doing so (clicks, ad views, account numbers).
If the author does not have closed comments (or you have an account), you can leave a comment on the fic.
Russian: Автор оригинала лично подтвердил, что не давал разрешения на перевод и публикацию. English: Author of the work personally confirmed that they did not give permission to translate and publish.
Finally - check in on your author friends that are on that list. It's devastating to find out your work has been plagiarized, translated and hosted somewhere else without your consent. Reblog their work, share comments, hype them up!
A couple of notes: (Juju correct me if I've fucked any of this up 💚)
The posters are likely not making money off the unauthorized translations. The website and their owners definitely are (ads, "premium features", promotion tools, etc.)
Ficbook.net is the biggest Russian language fanfiction platform - somewhat akin to AO3, but it doesn't have a great reputation within Russian circles because of the stealing and underhanded practices the owners use.
AO3 is banned in Russia, and Tumblr is one of the few places Russians can easily (aka without VPNs and Mirrors) read English version of fanfic.
CoD isn't the only fandom affected - there are dozens that have more posted, and we only scratched the surface in our list.
Finally, if you want to translate works, TALK TO THE AUTHOR. A lot of folks don't like having their work shared without their consent. Even if you feel like you are doing a good thing spreading it to a wider audience, YOU NEED THE AUTHOR'S CONSENT. If they've deleted their presence and their stories from hosting sites (tumblr, AO3, etc) - you don't get to pretend you're doing them a favor by reposting them. Respect their decisions.

How to name your characters
do not repost
Choosing a character's name is an important part of creating a story. You want people to remember your characters and the first step is the name. But how do you choose the perfect name?
Two things to keep in mind:
Clarity: Having names in a story that are the same or similar (and it not being a plotpoint) can be very confusing for the reader and especially in the beginning, this can hinder them in their reading. Memorability: Do you want your character to have an iconic name that everyone can immediately attribute to your story?
Unique names
There are a lot of memes about characters with very unique names (especially in YA novels). And if there isn't a good explanation for why their parents would name them Sunshine Bentley I would personally try to use a bit more common names. Character names don't need to be something unique for people to recognize them easily. Bella, Edward and Jacob are not unique names and you probably still know who I am talking about.
More questions to answer:
Association: Do you want people to associate something with the name? Another fictional character or a historic person?
Fitting: Should the name fit the person? Or should the name not fit the person, should the name even feel uncomfortable for the character? Also: Does the name fit the story you are trying to tell?
Length: The length of a name, especially if they are called by that name without abbreviation can give a different vibe to a character.
Nickname: Is that person called by another name?
Theme: Do you want the names in the story (or at least some of them) to fit a theme? Example: Sisters named after flowers, a group of people with names of historic figures.
You should also keep in mind the genre of your story, what era it plays in and the place/language those names should fit in.

_____,
I don’t understand why you prefer such a bothersome way of communication when we have communication devices but if it’s what you want.
We have successfully acquired the earth attribute power that White Star is looking for. It’s currently in my possession but I did not absorb it so you don’t have to worry about my plate. I’ll explain everything to you once we see each other. The trial to get this power was in the form of battling a giant snake that can lure people by playing with their feelings such as sorrow. The sight wasn’t pretty. It was gruesome, something you wouldn’t want to see.
However, the ending sight was a spectacle. The way the snake turned into flower petals was quite pretty. I think you would have liked to see it for yourself. Nonetheless, you should stay there where it is safe. Ron has told you that he left some of the members of the Molan household in your care. Don’t hesitate to use them at your disposal.
Sincerely,
Cale
Dear Cale,
Thank you for indulging my whims and using letters as our way to communicate. I prefer it this way as this puts no pressure on you to respond immediately. As for my end of things, I’m doing fine. I hope you are too. Territory work is a lot harder than I anticipated. Paperwork is easy, as I’ve learned a lot from our time in Mogoru. However, everything else is physically taxing. Despite that, it’s manageable as I have a lot of people helping me.
Again, please take your time. Whether it’s about responding to my letters or explaining your secrets to me. You can take it slow. Remember that I’ll just be here waiting whenever you are waiting.
Please stay safe and always take care of your health. I will be waiting until the next time I hear from you again.
Sincerely,
_____
Dear Count Perduellio,
Remember when we talked about giving the Dark Elves their territory? I have some great news to share with you. Thanks to the help of my younger brother, we might have a chance to acquire the Land of Death. If everything goes according to plan, the Dark Elves will be able to live aboveground soon. Until then, I shall trust you to take care of them.
As for other news, I am sure you have heard about Cale Henituse’s status right now in the Caro Kingdom. Fear not for he is safe. In fact, that punk is energetic enough to treat the crown prince’s bedroom as if it were his own. He’s currently eating my cookies as I write this letter.
That’s all I can share for now. I will update you if other news comes my way.
Sincerely,
Alberu Crossman
Dear Crown Prince Alberu,
I’m delighted to hear such news. It would be great if the Roan Kingdom could give the Dark Elves the Land of Death as they are already familiar with it. As for the Dark Elves within my care, they are also doing well. They have started to settle in the homes we have provided for them and have initiated socializing with the other residents. So far all of them are living in harmony. Children playing, the market bustling, humans and Dark Elves becoming friends. All of this is happening without discrimination.
Of course, I shall observe some more to make sure that all is going positively. However, Your Highness, can you write such brash words? If anyone else were to read your letter it would surely tarnish the reputation of our rising sun a little bit. Good thing we send our letters through special means that will keep their secrecy.
I hope the crown’s endeavours will go splendidly. I shall await more news once it arrives.
Sincerely,
_____ Perduellio
_____,
Have you been doing well? You’ve probably heard from his highness that I am fine despite what the rumours say. There are some things I found out that left me with more questions than answers. To solve that I will be visiting the World Tree. I only wrote this letter to inform you of that, so you won’t worry if ever you can’t contact me.
Sincerely,
Cale
Dear Cale,
I am doing well for the most part. But my body feels heavy these days along with a headache that will come and go. Don’t worry, the healer said it’s probably because of the weather and from me staring at documents too much. It will pass soon.
You’re going to visit the World Tree? Be careful on your travels. I hope you get the answers you are looking for.
Sincerely,
_____
Dear Count _____,
I have heard from my eldest child that you are not feeling well. Some instances cannot be helped, but you must take care of yourself as much as possible. Do not be afraid to let your retainers and servants shoulder some of the work. You did not clean them up for nothing after all.
After hearing about your condition I have ordered someone to send you some herbal tea that will help with your headaches. It can also improve your sleep quality. I would like to be there myself, but alas I must stay in the duchy for now.
I will make sure to visit you the first chance I get. Until then, take care of yourself and your health.
Sincerely,
Violan Henituse
Dear Duchess Violan,
I have received the herbal tea you have sent and truly works wonders. Some of my headaches are elevated and my sleep has improved these days. I shall use this tea well as thanks for your generosity.
As another way to give my thanks, I have sent out a sample of a gem we are currently refining. The design is still in its early stage that’s why it may look a bit rough. I will make sure to send you another one once it’s complete.
Sincerely,
_____ Perduellio
Dear _____-nim,
Good day _____-nim, are you doing well? Everyone in the duchy is worried about you as you have not responded to any of our letters for a while now. While taking care of work I have also noticed that the Perduellio Territory’s security has gotten tighter. They seem to be keeping something hush.
We are all worried about your silence. I sincerely hope that you are doing well and was just too busy to respond.
Please respond as soon as possible,
Basen Henituse
Dear Duke Henituse,
Good day duke, you may not be familiar with me so I shall introduce myself. I am Viscount Legalem, one of Count Perduellio’s retainers. I am sending this letter to inform you of the count’s condition. Our dear count has fallen unconscious and will not wake up.
That may make you wonder why I am sending you a letter instead of contacting you through a communication device. I have three reasons to do so; (1) I want to respect Count _____’s decision. They have told me to contact you by letter if it’s not an emergency. I would like to honour that child’s decisions; (2) As I mentioned it is not an emergency, our healers have checked on them and said that nothing is wrong internally and they would be fine even in an unconscious state, and; (3) I have been told by Count _____ to contact either you or Commander Cale if something happens to them. I have no way of contacting the commander which is why I have turned to you.
Our healers and other experts who have checked on Count _____’s condition have found nothing wrong. However, I am still worried as they are not waking up no matter what we do. Thankfully, they are not injured, cursed, or poisoned. Regretfully, we still have not found the reason as to why they are unconscious.
The territory itself is doing well even in the absence of our count. Count _____ has always made sure to get ahead of their work as they said they aren’t sure when the commander will call for them. Nonetheless, our territory would very much appreciate it if you could lend some of your healers and experts to assess our count’s condition. A second opinion would be beneficial to see if our healers have missed anything.
Sincerely,
Viscount Legalem

This morning, I used tumblr's "insert gif" function in the new post editor, and now I'm irritated.
I've made and posted gifs on tumblr for over a decade, and it's always been something where I knew people are going to save them, repost them, try to steal them, and so on. I figured this out pretty early and I always add watermarks. No sweat.
Recently, I was adding some gifs to a post, and I saw one of my own gifs in the selection list. I added it to my post to see it, because it was one of my favourites. Then I noticed the username in the credit, "GIF by username", was some random person that was obviously not me. This gif was created by me, it even had my watermark in the bottom corner. I checked some other gifs and found more like this, all with different usernames.
After some googlefu, I discovered that if someone saves and reposts a gif, tumblr will somehow detect them as being the creator, instead of the person who originally posted it.
I vaguely remembered a form to report problems like this. But there's no form to request re-attribution at all. Tumblr only provides a DMCA takedown request page, which requires you to be the original owner of the copyrighted source material. In other words, you actually need to own the companies whose content you used, and you also have to put in your phone number and personal info.
Welp.
So now, there are dozens of my gifs in the gif search, with burned-in watermarks of my own username on them, but with some random schmuck's name listed in the "GIF by (name)" once someone adds it into their post. And there's no way to re-attribute it. It's not a big deal because they're just gifs, and I did add watermarks precisely because I knew they would get spread around without proper credit (whether unintentionally or not). But having a systemic, automated attribution problem is a new low for tumblr.
Really, the bar is now in hell.

Authorization Statement
I must state that, from now on, I will no longer authorize anyone to use my illustrations to create videos in any form, even if the creators claim it's for personal enjoyment.
Some time ago, I found that my illustrations had been used in some short videos and uploaded on platforms like TikTok. Although I was aware of this, I didn't pay much attention because I think that as long as my works are seen, I'm happy enough. Regarding authorization, I've always stated that as long as it's for non-commercial purposes, people can share my illustrations for personal enjoyment as long as they credit my account (for example, using them as profile pictures or backgrounds).
I also know that for quite a while, my illustrations have been uploaded on platforms like Pinterest, some of which properly credited my account, but others did not. Now, I need to make it clear that I have not authorized anyone to upload my illustrations to Pinterest, though I didn't take this matter seriously in the past. Recently, due to well-known reasons, many users have shifted from TikTok to Rednote. I noticed that some people continue to use my illustrations to create short videos on Rednote. In fact, I have an account on Rednote where I post my works, but the works may have been uploaded later than on my Tumblr account, and I haven't posted all of my illustrations there.
What frustrates me is that, as the unquestionable original author of these illustrations, I need to prove to Rednote that I am the original author just to have their videos taken down. I'm not trying to express confusion or anger towards the platform's laws, but rather, I want to emphasize that, as the original author, I may have to expend five times the effort to defend my rightful attribution. Moreover, it's not realistic for me to constantly monitor whether others are properly crediting my work and to address these issues without any time limit.
A saying is that once a work is created, it no longer belongs to the creator. Although the meaning of this saying primarily refers to the author's loss of the right to interpret the work's content, it is both advantageous and disadvantageous. For the author, it undoubtedly reveals that they lose a certain amount of control over their work while they are still alive. Personally, I've always felt that my work, being inspired by a deceased author, may have taken a shortcut, and as a result, I have maintained a friendly attitude toward others sharing my work. After all, this widespread dissemination was partly due to the popularity of the deceased author's work, which helped spread my own. However, over time, I've realized that this has both its positives and negatives. I believe that while I'm still alive, I should at least have the right to ensure my work is attributed to me.
This request may seem like I'm trying to grab attention by not allowing others to spread my works, but at the moment, I truly have no other way to deal with this situation. More importantly, through the process of drawing, I've gradually come to understand that if I, as the original author, don't take my work seriously, don't protect it, and don't defend my rights, then no one else is obligated to do it for me. Of course, I'm still grateful for everyone's love for my work and for the original novel, and I'll continue to put in more effort when I feel inspired.
I’d like to make a final statement: You are free to save my images for personal enjoyment. However, reposting my illustrations requires my direct consent and proper attribution. Otherwise, no reposting is allowed. I also do not authorize anyone to use my illustrations to create videos.

So in one post you’re ranting about people on Twitter stealing jokes and in another you’re reposting other people’s art….
I think you have a deep misunderstanding of the problem.
There is content creation... Someone makes a thing.
There is content curation... Someone shares a thing someone else made.
There is attribution... Someone credits the creator of the content.
There is theft... Someone takes credit for content they did not make.
I love content creation. Artists are great.
I love content curation. There is way too much content on the internet and without people sorting through it and finding the best stuff, we would all go nuts looking at all the bad stuff just to find a few hidden gems. When I was doing this as a job and when I wasn't creating content, I used to go through about a thousand images per day just to find 5 to post on my blog. It's actually a lot of work.
I love attribution. One of the main ways I grew my following was by content curators sharing my work and crediting me.
People like the thing. They see who made it. They follow that creator.
I do not like theft. Sometimes you can't find a source for something. I understand that happens and I struggle with that sometimes myself. But people sharing something they did not create and taking credit for its creation is super scummy. Especially if they are erasing watermarks and adding their own. This will give people the impression they made the thing, so they won't even try to find the creator of that content. The original content creator will never get the benefit of more followers.
So, whenever I curate content, I always try to find the source. Especially if it is a creative work that took a lot of time and effort to make. I also try to give people multiple ways to consume that creator's content.
If you look at the art you mentioned, you can see links to several places to follow the artist.
And if I cannot find a source, what I will absolutely not do, is give people the impression I am responsible for creating the content. And oftentimes someone will recognize the creator and I am able to add attribution after the fact.
As both a content creator and a content curator, these are the best practices I have developed over years of doing this. Some people accuse curators of being just "reposters" and being lazy for not creating their own content, but they are an extremely valuable asset to artists. We need ethical curators to share our work and attribute it properly so we can build audiences.
What we don't want are content thieves and those assholes who say, "credit goes to the artist who made this."
Hopefully you have a better understanding of the issue now.

A Helping Hand
(Post Deletion Repost)
A/N: This took me way longer than I thought it would. Anyway, here’s the beginning of the Sarah-Bumlets friendship
There was a lot Sarah liked about her job. You could make lace at home, so she didn’t have to slave away in a factory like her father used to or spend hours outside in the blistering heat or freezing cold like the newsies did. She only saw her clients when she was making deliveries so she didn’t have to deal with rude or aggressive customers on a regular basis like shopgirls did (or really at all, since her parents encouraged her to drop anyone who didn’t treat her with respect.) She didn’t have to worry about employee conflict because the only person she worked with was her mother, who was much kinder about mistakes than any floor supervisor she’d ever heard stories about.
And she was good at it. She’d been making lace since she was twelve and now, six years later, she’d never gotten a customer complaint. She’d worked long and hard to get to where she was and she couldn’t help but be proud of her progress. Maybe taking pride in work that was expected of her wasn’t something nice young ladies were supposed to do but they also weren’t supposed to punch men trying to hurt them and their brothers so she didn’t care much for being a nice young lady.
Really, the only thing she disliked was how much time it took for her to actually make the lace. The Delancey brothers had ruined weeks’ worth of work when they knocked her basket into the gutter and Sarah wanted to hunt them down and punch them both every time she thought about it (Jack would help her and Blink, too, if she could find him.) Her clients, at least, had been understanding when she explained what happened and the tailors, Mr. and Mrs. Cohen, even sent her home with some homemade pastries after their meeting but she’d still been set back weeks by the incident, weeks she’d spent cooped up in the apartment with only Jack and her family for company.
Sarah loved her family, she really did, and Jack had a way of distracting her from her frustrations without distracting her from her work but after six weeks of seeing the same two rooms and the same five people with no variety, she desperately needed a change. Which was how she ended up wandering around Lower Manhattan alone with a basket twice as full as the last one in her arms. Maybe it wasn’t heavy when she’d first started out but carrying it around to make deliveries had left her shoulders sore and her hip aching where she’d been resting it. She’d been out for two hours, regretting turning down David’s offer of help with every passing second, when she’d heard someone call her name from behind her.
When she turned, she saw Bumlets making his way toward her, moving through the crowd with an effortless grace that made her jealous. When he reached her, he took off his hat and immediately raked his fingers through his thick black hair, as if out of habit. She almost hadn’t recognized him when she’d turned around, something she attributed to his put-together appearance. Unlike when they were handing out copies of the Newsies Banner, his shirt was neatly buttoned under a vest and the buckles on his breeches were tightly fastened instead of loose around his knees. He also had a walking stick propped against his shoulder for some reason, one too small to be functional for someone his height. His smile was familiar at least, small but kind, the type of smile that warmed you from the inside out, and Sarah couldn’t help but return it.
“Hey, Sarah. I thought it was you,” he said, his voice much softer than one would suspect from a newsie. He wasn’t much taller than her, which Sarah was thankful for because it made it easier to look him in the eye, but he had strong shoulders and carried himself with a quiet confidence that she admired. With a satchel for his papers slung over one shoulder and his walking stick resting against the other, he looked like the modern-day version of the knights from Les’s stories, ready to take on anything the world threw at him, whether it be an extra one-tenth of a cent for papers or a strike-breaker’s club.
“Bumlets, hi! It’s good to see you!” After spending nearly six weeks cooped up inside trying to catch up on her work, she was thrilled to see a friendly face other than Jack and her family. She carefully shifted her basket so she could reach out and greet him with a quick handshake, his hand warm and calloused against her own. As she attempted to move the basket back in place, however, she lost her grip on one side, nearly sending her piecework tumbling into the street below. Thankfully, Bumlets was both close enough and fast enough that he managed to grab the handle before it tilted too far, stepping closer so the basket was wedged safely between her stomach and his hip.
“You alright?” He waited for her to nod before continuing, his deep brown eyes filled with concern. “Did you want some help with this?”
“Oh, you don’t have to worry about me. I can handle it. I wouldn’t want to distract you from selling.” As much as she did want his help, she couldn’t bring herself to accept it, not when it distract him from his livelihood. A difficult workday for her mostly meant that she had made more mistakes than usual or gotten into an argument with her mother. For him, it was a matter of either not eating dinner or sleeping on the streets and she would rather die than put him or any of the other boys in that position. It was a choice she’d never had to make for herself and her heart ached at the thought of anyone having to make that same decision.
Something in his expression softened at her words and the corners of his still-smiling mouth hitched up a little higher. He then proceeded to slide his hat back onto his head, tuck his walking stick under his arm, and adjust his grip on the basket handle, all in one smooth, easy movement.
“Don’t worry. If anything, I think the two of us will get plenty of attention carryin’ this thing around. Besides-” his smile turned playful, “-sellin’ papes is better when the company’s good. Shall we?” With that, he gestured for her to start walking and, after another reassurance that he really did want to help her, the two set off toward the rest of her clients.
They were quiet at first, though Bumlets still sold papers and Sarah made small talk with her customers as she reached them. More than one seemed interested in the boy with her, though no one said anything until they reached the tailor shop. Sarah was carefully tucking away her money purse when Mrs. Cohen turned to her companion with a smile too wide for Sarah’s liking
“And who is this, Sarah? Perhaps one of those brothers I’ve heard so much about?” Sarah doubted that Mrs. Cohen actually thought he was her brother. Their only commonality was brown eyes but his were darker, nearly black. Between his overall darker coloring and the sharper angles of his face, she thought it was obvious that they weren’t related. More likely, Mrs. Cohen was trying to play matchmaker, something she’d been trying to do since Sarah started working with her.
“No, ma’am. This is…” Sarah trailed off, wondering how appropriate it would be to introduce him as “Bumlets,” which was frankly one of the stranger nicknames she’d heard from the newsies and certainly the one that sounded the most inappropriate. At her momentary pause, he made the decision for her and stepped forward, holding out his hand.
“Damian Vasquez, ma’am. I’m a friend of the family. It’s nice to meet you.” His smile was charming, reminding her a bit of the smile Jack would give her mother whenever he showed up early in the morning looking for breakfast. It seemed to have a similar effect as Jack’s because Mrs. Cohen’s face brightened into something more genuine and she happily took his offered handshake.
“It’s very nice to meet you too, Damian. And aren’t you sweet, helping Sarah? After what those two goons did to her and her brothers,-” she saw him shoot her a look out of the corner of her eye but Sarah ignored it in favor of trying to not sink into the ground with embarrassment, “-it’s nice to see someone looking out for her, especially a strapping young man like you.” Sarah had felt a part of herself die with every word and was debating the merits of climbing onto the roof of the shop and throwing herself off when Bumlets (Damian?) spoke.
“Believe me, ma’am, after everything Sarah did for us newsies during the strike, this is the least I could do. It would’ve been a lot harder to win if she hadn’t helped.” She wasn’t sure if what he was saying was true but it warmed her nonetheless.
“You know, I haven’t gotten my paper yet today. Is there anything good today, Damian?” Sarah could see a newspaper sitting on one of the counters in front of them and resisted the urge to cry. Or scream. Maybe both.
“Well, a man got hit by one of those motorized taxis and died yesterday. Apparently, it’s the first death from a motor vehicle accident in the States.” She had to hand it to him, he was good. He kept his voice soft and appropriately forlorn, like he couldn’t quite believe the tragedy had happened. Paired with his downcast eyes and the sorrowful shake of his head, it was almost enough to make her want to buy a paper from him, even though she’d been listening to him shout headlines for the past twenty minutes. It worked well on Mrs. Cohen at least, who clasped a hand over her heart and let out a slightly dramatic sigh.
“They find new ways to get people killed every year. Here you are, dear.” When she handed over the coin (a quarter, based on the size), Bumlets’s eyebrows shot up before he quickly tucked it into his bag and handed over the paper. With the transaction complete, Mrs. Cohen turned to Sarah and pulled her into a motherly embrace.
“You take care of yourself, dear. You’re such a wonderful girl and I’d hate to see you get hurt.” Sarah flushed and was in the process of mentally recanting every horrible thing she’d thought about the older woman when she whispered, just loud enough for Bumlets to hear, “And don’t let that one get away. He’s far too sweet, and handsome to boot, don’t you think?” Sarah pulled back, face flaming, and tried to give her most professional smile.
“Have a nice day, Mrs. Cohen.” With that, Sarah whipped around and practically dragged Bumlets out of the stop while he called out his own goodbye. He at least had the decency to hold in his laugh, though she could feel the basket shaking between them from the effort.
“Are you okay?” he asked. She could hear the laughter in his voice but when she glanced over at him, he looked more sympathetic than amused. Smart boy, she thought before letting out a deep breath and turning back to look in front of her.
“I’m fine. She’s been trying to set me up with someone since I was fifteen. I don’t know why I’m surprised,” she said, jostling the basket between them as she shrugged. “Though you are the first one who wasn’t one of her sons or nephews so you should feel special.”
“I’m thrilled,” he deadpanned, his dark eyes sparkling with humor. He then turned serious, pulling her to the edge of the sidewalk so he could look her in the eyes while he asked, “Are you sure you’re okay? You seemed pretty upset.” He looked so earnest that despite her misgivings about opening up to someone she barely knew, Sarah couldn’t help but cave.
“Mrs. Cohen has a lot of great qualities,” she started slowly, trying to find the right words as she spoke, “She just happens to be one of those people who doesn’t think boys and girls our age can be just friends.” It seemed that she met more and more people like that as she got older, her sixteenth birthday marking the point when the people around her started seeing her as someone’s future wife instead of a person with her own wants, dreams, and opinions. “And as much as I do want a family someday, I still have a lot of things to figure out.”
Things like whatever it was she felt for Jack, who’d kissed her in front of hundreds of cheering newsies- Bumlets included- and then never tried again. They still hadn’t talked about it though sometimes he held her hand under the dinner table and had breakfast with her on the roof watching the sunrise with her head resting on his shoulder. She knew she cared about him and that he cared about her but she still wasn’t sure exactly what she felt or what it meant.
Things like Nadia Volkova, a girl in their building who had the greenest eyes she’d ever seen and was so pretty it made her chest hurt. Sarah had helped her learn English when her family arrived and the two of them spent hours giggling together while Nadia tried to pronounce words like “sculpture” and “clothesline.” The first fully English sentence Nadia ever said to her was “I am so lucky to have someone who is beautiful, inside and outside, looking out for me” punctuated by a kiss on her cheek, and when Sarah slept that night, she dreamt of emerald eyes and vanilla perfume.
Things like what her family would do once they lost her income. She and her mother had been the only people in the family making money during the strike and she could never admit how terrifying it had been. Things were better now that David and Les were selling again and her father’s arm had healed enough to go back to work but it had been a difficult two weeks and Sarah never wanted her family to worry about money that much ever again.
She couldn’t say all of that to Bumlets (especially the parts about Nadia) but he at least seemed to understand that she was conflicted because he simply nodded and offered her a sympathetic smile.
“I can’t say that’s a problem I’ve ever had but my sisters and one of my regular customers have the same problem.” Bumlets twisted his mouth a bit before continuing. “My sister, Cataleya, turned sixteen in January and says boys are terrified of talkin’ to her now. Boys she’s been friends with for years suddenly won’t say more than two words to her because their parents keep bringin’ up marriage.
“And Eliza, my regular, says ever since she turned eighteen, she hasn’t had a single conversation with an older woman without one of them mentionin’ some son or nephew or cousin looking for a wife. One of these days, I’m gonna get to the distribution center and the headline’s gonna be ‘Socialite Slaughters Social Club’ and then I’ll have to break her out of prison.” He sounded so resigned to the idea that Sarah couldn’t help but giggle.
He relaxed a bit at her laughter and gently pushed the basket they were holding against her hip. “Don’t worry too much about people like Mrs. Cohen. They’ve probably forgotten what it was like to have friends who aren’t exactly like them.”
“Does that make us friends?” she asked, a little nervous and a little hopeful. After the last few months, she was in desperate need of a friend, especially one she didn’t have complicated feelings for. He smiled at her, the biggest one yet, and nodded.
“Definitely. Now,” he said, steering them back into the foot traffic around them, “Let’s get these dropped off and then head to lunch. I’ve got about five years’ worth of embarrassin’ stories about Jack Kelly that I’ve been holdin’ in since we met.”
“I can’t wait.” As the two of them walked off to her next customer, Sarah felt a weight lift from her shoulders and she couldn’t fight the smile still on her face.
Friends.

Do you see memes and shitposts about Alexander and his time? If yes, do you like them, you hate them? Would you change something about these memes?
I’m sorry. I’m just really curious about what a professor thinks about this. Do you perhaps have a favorite Alexander meme?
Well, for me there’s a big difference between memes and shitposts. The former can be rather entertaining, the latter are just trolling. Don’t feed the trolls. I realize I’m perhaps defining shitposting more narrowly than some, but there’s enough of the narrow sort out there I don’t want to confuse it with memes.

Meme are great. I have two favorites, although not about Alexander, ironically. I’ve shared them below. Both show up in my class Power-points, btw! Many of my colleagues also enjoy clever memes. My buddy Borja Antela was trying to collect some on Alexander last year. For a while, I followed Alexandergoatmemes on Instagram, but finally left because about 85/90% of them seemed to be about Alexander naming cities after himself. Sure, it’s funny maybe the first 20 times, but at 100+?

So memes are great. Shitposting and ignorant-posting, however, are annoying.
I’m deliberately creating that third category. Shitposters know they’re posting shit; ignorant-posters (usually) don’t. The latter put up videos, tweets, or blog entries about (in this case) Alexander that perpetuate a lie, a false quote, or an oversimplified-and-mostly-wrong factoid. Some ignorant-posters are just reposting what they heard because they don’t know any better and may receive correction well enough—especially if offered politely. Yet others get upset (sometimes disproportionately so) when their errors or distortions are pointed out.
This can be about controversial matters, such as Alexander’s putative “sexuality” or it can be something surprising. I once had a fellow fly off the handle when he posted that Alexander was left-handed and I (gently) corrected him.* You’d have thought I’d called his mother a whore. It seemed quite silly…except that left-handedness used to be considered a Very Bad Thing. So being able to claim famous people as lefties was apparently more for him than just leftie pride.
Aside from oddities, most of the ignorant-posting I’ve seen comes in three main types.
First, we have the religious/spiritual/life-coach sorts who usurp Alexander for a moral lesson—not unlike the orators of the (Roman-era) Second Sophistic, or both Muslims and Christians in some of the Alexander Romances. Alexander has ALWAYS been a malleable figure for lecturing. Ergo, he pops up in homilies/sermons as a parable, like his supposed Last Three Wishes. It is, of course, total bullshit, but there’s quite a lot of stuff like it out there. People read it, go “Aww,” and reblog without bothering to check if it’s correct. It has “the authority of hearsay.” These can be either Alexander-positive or Alexander-negative parables, btw.
See also: quotes attributed to famous celebrities that they never, in fact, said. Alexander gets these too. The ¡Inspirational! “Army of Sheep Led by a Lion” is especially egregious, as it’s a general proverb that appeared well after Alexander (no, he didn’t say it). It seems to be currently popular, along with, “There is nothing impossible to him who will try” (also not ATG). Yet these make great quotes for those damn “Inspirational Posters.” Here’s a whole page of them, lion quote right at the top, suitable for a Power-point!...with no attempt to verify their authenticity or say where they got them. But the image with the quote below is especially funny as they even put a date on their fictional quote. If it has a date, it must be true! Netflix, btw, used that bloody quote even though I told them not to; it was fake. Didn’t matter.

Second, we have the alt-right/white supremacist groups, or hangers-on who might reject the label (coyly or not) but embrace much of its Eurocentric thinking. These folks present Alexander as spreading good [white] Western values to the poor benighted East [brown people]. It’s essentially warmed-over Plutarch with a dash of Curtius and some Arrian. Their Alexander even sometimes has longish flowing (blond) locks and is oddly tall.** Like Thor. I stay the hell away from them but have occasionally stumbled over them on Tik-Tok.

Anyway, the alt-right crowd may have read some about Alexander, written by other alt-right guys who take material from a carefully curated set of “accepted” histories: Arrian and Plutarch, and not just Plutarch’s Life of Alexander, but his double-essay from the Moralia, “On the Fate or Fortune of Alexander.” They tend to be war/conquest-approving and see the Greco-Roman past as some pure Aryan utopia from which we’ve fallen into our “wretched age of iron.”*** Of late, a lot of their associated images are AI generated, btw. A couple examples below.

Last, and on the opposite end of the spectrum are the Alexander-was-Queer-AND-Wonderful, and oh, boy, some of them also don’t want a single bad thing said about their hero. They may know relatively little about his life aside from his putative gayness, but are just as resistant to/resentful of being corrected in their errors and romantic oversimplifications.
And that is what all of these categories share: oversimplification for the sake of a particular social and/or political agenda.****
Isn’t it, then, also shitposting? No. Because shitposters intend to stir the pot. They may or may not believe what they say, but they’re saying it TO get a reaction. Like the Tweet Heard Round the Alexander-verse after the Netflix thing (below). THAT was a shitpost. His entire goal was to go viral, and he succeeded.

By contrast, ignorant-posters usually aim for a particular audience and rarely expect to go viral outside their circle. Nor do they expect to be corrected. When they are, they react with surprise and anger. (Again, there are exceptions.)
I tend to observe these things, but rarely engage—although I did engage more when I was a young grad student. Now if I reply, it’s general (as here), not to the original post/tweet itself. TBH, I have books and articles to write, classes to teach, and papers to grade. 😉 I don’t have time for flamewars.
-----------------------
* Yes, I made Alexander left-handed in Dancing with the Lion, partly for the hell of it. But there’s zero evidence one way or the other—which I point out in my Author’s Note at the end of book 2, Rise.
** BTW, there’s a Whole Thing out there online about Alexander as tall, even Super Tall, claiming evidence which they don’t actually cite (correctly). Note the “many stories suggest….” Oh, really? These are? Anyway, I don’t think the author of that blog entry is alt-right—which is why I put it as a footnote—but dig the wacko AI white-haired Nordic Alexander at the top! And I’m still chuckling at a 7-foot-tall Alexander. Good Lord, how tall would that make Hephaistion?
*** Yeah, that’s a little bow to Hesiod’s theory of the Ages of Man.
**** Note that I didn’t include Greek Nationalists. While some of them also swing right (Golden Dawn, Front Line, National Reform Party, etc.), many are more moderate. Alexander is a Greek hero, and if what’s presented about him by some is also oversimplified to fit a national narrative, it doesn’t spring from ignorance so much as deliberate choice and what they learned in school/at home. Think about what the average (white) American knows about George Washington or Thomas Jefferson, or for that matter, the average native person about Tecumseh or Crazy Horse.

Stop stealing and reposting other people's gifs. It's all you do. The reblog function is there for a reason.
Hi anon!
Wow. Way to assume the worse about me without so much as a polite message. 😾
First off… I didn’t find those memes or gifs on Tumblr. If I did, I would have reblogged them. I found them by googling Supernatural memes and was taken to a ton of meme sites that likely snatched them from somewhere else.
Second, I would never knowingly steal someone’s work. I am an artist and a writer; my life’s blood is originality and creativity. I would never knowingly take someone’s work without proper credit—if I could credit them, I would.
Third, I’m sharing funny memes and gifs from a show that touched many of us. Perhaps next time you should approach kindly if you saw something you credited being repurposed elsewhere. I would happily either take it down or attribute correctly.
Be careful where you sling those accusations.

y'all, can we please not repost other people's meta and stuff without credit to twitter/instagram, etc.... i keep seeing my own posts and mutuals posts stolen without even a link back to the source. it sucks. you absolutely do not need to crosspost other people's posts for them, a lot of us have multiple social media accounts, and if we don't, then it should be staying on tumblr. you wouldn't steal and repost a fic (i hope) so treat meta with the same respect. aside from the fact that i know for me personally it generally takes at least several hours to write and collect citations & screenshots, there's also a decent chance that whoever wrote it put sensitive/personal information in that they might not want you sharing out of context. i've used my own experiences as reference in my metas before, and i have never been asked permission to repost anywhere, yet i am seeing them around. i feel incredibly uncomfortable with it being screenshotted and shared around, especially without as much as my url visible in the image, and it's extremely disheartening to spend time on these things and then see them shared around without it even being properly attributed to you. be courteous, please.
#ada speaks#i dont want my shit on sunny twitter at all. none of it.#don't steal and repost my shitposts my gifs my videos or my metas#i should not be seeing ANY of my stuff around unless you've asked me first#and it's really not that hard to respect the people putting out shit that you're treating like consumables to gain a following#off of reposting stuff that isn't even yours to begin with#i can't police people and i can't control what happens to my stuff outside of tumblr#but if you enjoy my posts at all. please don't. lmao#iasip#it's always sunny in philadelphia

Guess I should make a post about it on here too, but considering it's part of my pinned, I'm sure most people are aware already--but!
DO NOT USE ANY OF MY ART WITHOUT PERMISSION.
This includes for icons, profile banners, roleplay resources, etc. If you want to use something of mine for those purposes, either ask me (in which case I will inform you as to the proper means of attribution I desire), or commission me to make something specifically for you.
My art takes time, ESPECIALLY since I've been having hand troubles this past year, so when somebody just nicks it to slap wherever and can't even bother to CREDIT me, it fucking hurts.
Highly considering making my watermarks more obnoxious just for this, as well as adding a 'do not repost' clause to my watermark for this blog.

Be not afraid, fleshy thing.
I only eat dreams, unless you piss me off ✪ ω ✪
I'm Mystybelle, the closest thing to a friendly face in the dark you're gonna get, and I'm "definitely" not here to eat the corpse of your still screaming world. Probably just a few nibbles here and there~
More importantly, I'm your new favorite (evil) unseiso idol
Also; I am an ENVtuber, but 私は日本語を話す方法を学んでいます!
I stream Wednesday to Saturday starting at 6:30 (18:30 CST) and ending at midnight (or 3am on Friday & Saturday). I mostly play RPGs, metroidvanias, or anything with a strong narrative focus & gets your blood pumping; plus league of legends (but I'm only playing league until 2KXO comes out).
So tune in sometime and surrender your hopes and drea- have a good time!
twitch_live
semi ooc section-
I'm technically still pre-debut, and I do kinda feed on determination/the indomitable human spirit/the power of friendship & joy, so I talk a lot about indulging your ambitions, especially little ones, and staying true to yourself.
As long as that doesn't mean you start getting all JRPG protagonist on me. I'm even making a rpg-focused design document/template, that'll hopefully bring role-playing back into fashion again. But with people-instead of chat gpt. It's called World Seed SRD ♡ (link) and you can check it out there, in its alpha state. I'm making a proper pdf for it so it'll be easier to read and use, (don't worry, that version will be free too) because if this kind of thing isn't as accessible as possible, then I'm not sure it'll take off. Worst case scenario, I'll start charging $5 for it (since people seem to think things are more important if they cost money for some reason).
When I finish setting everything up for a proper debut, I'll be kicking off the ARG I've been planning too (mostly just waiting till I hit affiliate so I can integrate redeems). So if you like all that, stick around and let me sink my teeth into you UwU

We Should Be Crediting Gifs! There Is a Tutorial!
@alivedean (https://www.tumblr.com/alivedean) very gently pulled me up on this yesterday: gifs take people work and should be credited. If I've used one of your gifs without crediting, I'm so sorry. I didn't realize they were more labor-intensive than a screenshot or an edited photo, and that was thoughtless and careless of me. I'll be crediting from now on.
She also linked this sweet tutorial on how to embed a gif so it's attributed properly, which is no more difficult than doing a footnote on AO3 and saves the alt text for an image description.
Thank you so much, @alivedean, for pointing this out to me--and for being so kind about it and helping me instead of just yelling, which was within your rights. ❤️ Onwards and upwards!
