I do like the concept of Percy Jackson. It's cool, but it could've been done better.
Especially by todays standarts, some of the stuff Rick Riordan wrote seems pretty wrong. And even generally there are a lot of problematic things in his books.
My ego tells me I could do better than that, especially since I'm a queer hellenistic polytheist. I know about discrimination and I'm 100% sure I could capture the gods better.
Therefore I'm planning to write my own novel, on a very similar concept.
Percy Jackson but as unproblematic as possible. New characters, new plot.
I do have to think if making my own camp is a good idea due to copyrights, but I definetely want the teens to be constantly around eachother.
I don't have many plans yet, but I have like a dozen characters in mind.
The main character for example will not be some boy who's existence is forbidden since his dad is one of the most powerful gods, therefore he's so special yada yada.
It'll be a trans boy. Son of Ares, coming out of a abusive family and trying to fight with monsters, discrimination and mental health. One of his best friends will be a daughter of Aphrodite who sometimes takes the war aspect of her mother very serious.
I will focus a lot on representation, therefore I'll give my best to ask people for tips on how to write characters that are supposed to represent them.
(Unlike Rick, who made a native girl run around with sacred eagle feathers in her hair constantly)
+ It's not my plan to use Riordans ideas to become famous or some shit. I just want unproblematic versions of a similar concept to be available for people.

I don't think them changing Annabeth's crush is a problem because familial love is an equivalent replacement. It was mainly just fuel for Percy's jealousy. It would be funny if Percy was just in his head the entire time that she has a crush on Luke and the whole time she's just "I love my brother so much!!!!"
I don't think the change is a problem, but I simply don't see the necessity for the change? They had familial love in the book as well alongside her crush, and her having a crush in the book was very sweet and humorous to me. What was problematic was Luke returning her crush in the end. I would happily enjoy them taking out his weird reciprocation that he had in his final hour.
Regardless, no its not the end of the world for her Annabeth's character if they take away her crush.. its definitely just a loss for me lol. Her freaking out every time Luke interacted with her was funny. Percy teasing her about it was funny. Percy's jealousy was funny. And since her crush was pretty prevalent in the first couple books and now that the show has decided to either write it out, or tone it down, or whatever, they are losing out on a lot of those funny moments.
One thing that does make a difference, however, is her crush on Luke in tlt is often part of the times where Percy sees her as something other than perfectly composed and calculating. And it would be one thing if the show still showed the other "silly" or "childish" (so to speak) parts of Annabeth even without her having a crush... but they haven't really, and its one of my more sincere criticisms that show Annabeth has come off as way more stoic than she is in the book by now (which is not on Leah at all). Yes Annabeth is wise and hyper competent, but she's also very emotional and gets flustered and is kid that does kid things! Like the scene with the her in the store with the candy in episode 3? I need to see way more of that sort of thing, especially if they're cutting out a lot of book instances that showcases her more childish side.

Annabeth's stalking in ep2 is not great, to say the least.
I get that it seems cute to some of you, Annabeth being all driven and ambitious and figuring out that a water god is Percy's father, but like. Stalking is not cool. It's an invasion of privacy. It makes the person feel unsafe. It's unsettling. Even Percy acknowledges this - he straight up asks Luke to make her stop.
And to all of you who continue to romantize it and downplay how serious it is, I want to remind you that in SoM Annabeth used her invisibility cap to peep at Percy while he's changing his clothes in the assumed privacy and safety of his bedroom. (if you don't believe me I can pull book quotes). Yeah, that's how bad it gets.

ok but the possibility of rick changing the judo flip scene in the possible Heroes of Olympus tv series would be the equivalent of taylor swift changing the better than revenge lyrics from "she's better known for the things that she does on the mattress" to "he was a moth to the flame, she was holding the matches" in speak now tv

my little sister made my dad watch the entirety of the new Percy Jackson miniseries on Disney+, and when it was over, he just turned to me and said “well, I didn’t like it”

as the latest strike for palestine (the 18th-25th) begins today, i want to make a note for any new followers or pjo fans in general since the release of the pjo show and gathering discussion of it—never forget this series is a commentary on the way the old sacrifice the young. never forget disability and a struggling mother-son relationship are at the heart of the books. never forget this story tells us the solution to suffering is not a return to the ‘golden age’ that never was but to press forward by holding authority accountable—by changing the system, not becoming the oppressor ourselves. never forget the media you read, watch, and listen to, no matter how fantastical, are reflections of our real world—they have always been political. if you gleefully engage and emphasize with the suffering of fictional people but turn your back on real people, real injustice, all that enjoyment might as well be burned to ash because you have become the very thing every story like this that you hold dear tried to warn you against.

I can't explain how much happier I'd be if Leo and Calypso were just friends. Like if he was the only person she didn't fall in love with and they're like soulmates in a platonic way
