Ok but……. Cat!Atsushi and Cat!Aku I have the biggest brainrot about them.

Cat!sushi is definitely the more affectionate one of the pair(also way more horny). You’d normally think they’d be biting and hissing at each other or fighting for your attention(there is some bickering obviously) but cat!AKU just watches creepily…

hes silly. Yeah he may be extremely violent especially twoards Atsushi (the foot in the face was definitely personal) and anyone else he is made to defeat, but that's quite literally how he was raised. Don't forget we're talking about PM Dazai here. He was raised by Mori, what can we say? (#justice4dazai2024) We can assume (using the BEAST manga) that up until the point where Dazai turned him down, the things that occurred were relatively close to canon.

(or not idk I didn't finish the mangas. why read some rando's essay that can't even spell's abt some sassy victorian man child on the internet, infact, why are you even reading this in the first place?)

So we can assume he's been through a hell-of-alot of trauma with everyone close to him. His siblings and friends dying, and even himself tasting death and Dazai was practically his savior-- his controversial, abusive, strict, hot, gay, problematic, silly, teenage savior. Even if that's not what went down in the main series, what he went through was enough for Akutagawa to idolize Dazai, the same man that has hurt him oh so much.

His relationship with Atsushi. Their so cute like every scene together even when their fighting its just like 'make out alr'. He seems heartless and cruel and its like he hates Atsushi, but really as you can see when "Where's Your Head At?" by Basement Jaxx started playing, he cares for Atsushi deep down inside. Deep, deep, deep down. Must be really deep if it took literally dying to be nice. Seriously, even if he called him a 'damn fool' he's smiling, it's so sweet it makes me cry. As the blood traversing in his neck goes on its repetitive journey for its sole purpose of bringing oxygen to the rest of his body, it suddenly changes direction, hurriedly spraying out of the newfound opening made by a time traveling sword, and finally escaping through his pale, soon to be lifeless, dark red soaked neck. Yet, he is smiling through it all, telling his furry boyfriend "rival" to run. he cares. Just look at this beautifully colored pannel by Akutagoth on reddit:

Also, speaking of hair, anyone else ever notice how yin-yang Akutagawa and Atsushi are? Yeah they are both orphans that were taken in by Dazai and "abused by their handler" ('handler' is wild ngl) but in the main series Atsushi is more Yang and Akutagwa is more Yin, character wise, and even design wise. Yet, in Beast (a spin-off where Akutagawa ends up in the ADA and Atsushi ends up in the PM) the roles are reversed and Aku is more Yang and Atsu is more Yi, further emphasizing that this difference between the two isn't accidental (not claiming simply speculating).

Akutagawa is relatively bad but he has shown how he could be good, in the main series, Wan, and beast. he's undeniably a good brother (just look at how much he cares for his sister in beast, he even joined the ADA and made it his purpose to find her after he learned that she was in the mafia.) He keeps promises, hates meaningless torture-- which believe it or not shows a bit about his character-- (haha he does have emotions even if it may be stemmed from a deep psychological trauma). He also has a mainly dark but light accent wardrobe, from the ends of his hair to the very same accessory that he can't even name. help I ran out of good character traits I think I'm failing

Atsushi is relatively good, and even seems to be blind to it at times, but he has shown his not the best traits. He's kinda like Gon, but less merciless, even when it comes to fights with Akutagawa (sometimes). His good:bad ratio is pretty skewed though, no matter how much he may envy or hate his kindness kinda just... drowns it out. Evil headmaster dies? cry. Evil goth boyfriend partner dies? scream. Evil American enemy still lives? team up with him. Evil 14 year old serial assassin in the port mafia exist? save her.

Although, he's pretty rash/blunt (that Dazai diss was wild aku didn't do anything to deserve that) and its also shown in wan and other scenes in the main series that he would probably participate in a 2017-19 roast battle(hj) and holds some strong grudges. (help I ran out of bad character traits he's too good, its like he's so good and he doesn't even try.) Butttt apperence wise, his singular black hair streak in a head of light whatever-colored-hair (in contrast to Akutagawa's) and accents of black (suspenders, tail-belt-thing that moves as if he was Cat Noir, tie, gloves, pants, shoes) do what Akutagwa's 19th century ruffles do best. Be utterly useless and ugly and feed into the theory that he is a time traveler Contrast.

Basically, Shin Soukoku canon because opposites attract.

Kouyou handmakes yukata for them, and Yosano does Atsushi's hair. Akutagawa is always awestruck at how pretty Atsushi is. They walk around for hours, playing games and eating festival food, holding hands. During the fireworks show, Atsushi sometimes falls asleep with his head on Akutagawa's shoulder.

- Being around Atsushi physically relaxes Akutagawa, because he knows (even subconsciously) that Atsushi will keep him safe. He sleeps best when he's laying next to his jinko (especially when Atsushi plays with his hair.) Bonus points if Atsushi is purring-- it'll put Akutagawa straight to sleep.

Atsushi sleeping in a closet as a concept only keeps delivering, and it's only made better when you add Akutagawa to the scene? Did he comment on how cats like to be in boxes. Did he make a “talk about being in the closet......... ” joke. But most importantly how did he find out? Was he visiting Atsushi's place for the first time and he sat down on the only bed there and the exchange happened “get off, that's Kyouka's bed” “What do you mean Kyouka's bed? Where the hell do you sleep?” “I sleep in the closet” “... You sleep in the closet.”. Never getting tired of the potential this has, and the concept of Akutagawa blindfolding him, I can't, that's too cute 😭😭😭 Like yeah that would definitely happen!!! Because Akutagawa is all about this kind of silent acts of care, and Atsushi would probably never allow him to buy something expensive for him knowing the price tag. This is all so cute.

And I'm ALL IN for Atsushi baking for Akutagawa that sounds like something he would definitely do!!!! But yeah ultimately it's all about sskk exploring what it feels like to have a normal life and catching up on everything they've missed together, and it's so cute, it's one of my favorite things. They probably have a never-ending bucket list of all things they consider “normal” and slowly fill it together. They watch a lot of movies (especially for kids) and go to amusement parks together a lot and of course festival dates!!! Akutagawa always has his breath taken away by seeing Atsushi, but like, that's just Ryuunosuke Akutagawa for you. And the concept of Atsushi falling asleep on Akutagawa's shoulder 😭😭😭 Akutagawa probably going into internal combustion even though it's like the twelfth time that happened.

And I AM a firm believer Akutagawa can only really fall asleep with Atsushi like. That's the only thing that still keeps my sleepyhead-Akutagawa belief standing although he canonly only sleeps like four hours. siren dazai? no way sea monster dazai is the way to go! nothing about that guy looks safe but you know, he has a way with his words that you just can't help but think he's misunderstood and lonely. everyone thinks he's up to no good, but that's not the case at all! it's so unfortunate, you think, that dazai's being judged by the way he looks because he's really such a wonderful friend! what a shame that even the other sea creatures avoid him and his territory, of course it couldn't be because something was wrong with him. they were just being rude and outcasting him for something he couldn't control. you've spent enough time with him to know he was funny (in an odd way...it works on him, but if anyone else were to say his 'jokes' about eating you up and dragging you down to his cave and chaining you there, it would have terrified you. oh well, dazai's just never learned what jokes are supposed to be, so he just says the things people say about him. poor dazai, really) and he was really sweet, eager to help you with your troubles and offering his waters as a place for you to come to when you need to be alone and clear your head. not because he wants to be the only person you confide in and trust, definitely not!

and honestly, dazai was just bored. and what better way to spend the time than to trick some poor, unsuspecting human before making them his lunch? yum. sure, chuuya and a few select others were the only other mers that visited him, but that didn't mean he was lonely. he simply didn't care. of course, playing it up to you about how unfriendly everyone else was surely won over your sympathy, and it felt...sort of nice when you rubbed his cheek and looked at him with your sad eyes and told him you'd always be there for him. oh well, little human. he hopes you know he was going to hold you to that :)

his initial plan was just to earn your trust for a couple of days (because he knew how stupid and trusting humans were. terribly useless species, really. how did they survive for this long?) and then, under the pretense of an injury he couldn't reach, would coax you into getting into the water, where he could happily prepare you for a meal. but he began stalling, not wanting to eat you just yet. maybe you could entertain him a little while longer. playing with his food or whatever humans said. the more you talked to him and he learned about human relationships, the more curious he got. what did you mean, humans licked each other's mouths? how disgusting, he definitely wasn't interested in trying. what was so special about hand holding and cuddling and whatever the hell kissing was???? and why did he want to do it to you??? one day, he can't hold back his curiosity and drags you into the water off your boat, ignoring your screaming just to try and see if he "can shove his weird fish tongue down ur throat". and maybe more. obviously the talk about consent flew over his head, because what do you mean, you didn't want to do this with him? didn't you kiss people you like? and if you were coming to visit dazai this often, you definitely liked him right?

regardless, it wasn't anything he couldn't change with a little bit of time :)

akutagawa hm i think as much as i would love for him to be a sparkly shiny mermaid i think that role is more suited for chuuya aka the prettiest person EVER sorry anyway akutagawa octopus ver kinda reminds me of the kraken but shark akutagawa is also a wonderful picture i will figure that out eventually don't worry

so just another day of strolling on the beach admiring the sparkling water and woah what's that? a wild akutagawa has appeared! you find him beached and bleeding and you must obviously help him out! how could you leave him out there, alone and vulnerable? it's a little difficult to bring him to your conveniently close to the beach house, especially since he keeps growling and biting at your arms, but you finally make it and help him into the pool where he finally calms down enough for you to dress his wounds and give him something to eat.

and as much as he hates to admit it, he kind of likes it here with you. you're unexpectedly nice and not annoying or overbearing and your food tastes pretty good. sometimes, he's still waiting on you to ship him over to some evil merfolk killing people or a zoo or something terrible, or maybe you want to kill him yourself for his parts. but you don't do any of that. like you promised him, you bring him back to the ocean and wave him off.

except now, he really doesn't want to leave.

a week or so later, when you're back strolling by the shore, a familiar lump of something is waiting for you, wounded and stranded. you don't notice the way his eyes light up when he sees you, but you definitely notice that he wasn't biting you this time. sure, he has an iron-tight grip on you with his appendages, but maybe he was just scared? and the cycle continues. sometimes, you find fresh fish and seashells on the spot where you found him first, but most of the time, you find him, injured and waiting for your help. you don't suspect him of purposely hurting himself in order to see you and feel you nursing him back to health, but it does start to get a little suspicious. maybe he just got bullied a lot.

oddly enough, he's never friendly when you bring someone else with you. if by chance he's on the shore and you are with another person, akutagawa becomes hostile, growling and scratching at your companion until they run away and it's just him and you again. the way it should be :)

Finals Week

✧･ﾟ: * Kunikida

❈ Doppo understands stress as much as, if not better, than anyone. That does not mean he's going to be the best at helping you deal with it right away.

❈ From the start of the semester, he'd have an entire schedule laid out for you, but in an attempt to help you manage your time I could see him adding to the pressure more than taking away.

❈ This is why when he walks in and you're crying, while his first reaction might be overbearing, the second he realizes that he may have contributed to that stress he's crushed. If you mention letting him down or something similar his heart will break, he never wants his partner to feel inadequate.

| ✧ If you have to finish the work then, he'd be by your side reassuring you through it, mixed in with the apologies for the pressure.

❈ If you can take a break, or the second you're done, he'll clear his schedule (a big compliment from him) to take you somewhere comfortable. A nice dinner, a movie you'd been wanting to see or even just cuddling in the park. He has stress management techniques in his notebooks, and while some of them were Dazai's tricks, he does everything he can to help you destress after the semester as well.

✧･ﾟ: * Ranpo

❈ Ranpo would be hit or miss if he noticed on his own. He would be completely capable of seeing it, he just isn’t always paying attention. So he’ll either step in before you even get to the point of that much stress, or notice once you’re on the verge of tears. But regardless, the second he sees you starting to break down, all bets are off.

❈ I could see him being the type to “pester” someone to comfort them, so he’d be on you, poking your sides, kissing your cheek, “Hey hey hey, are you good yet?” until you start laughing. 

❈ Once you calmed down, he’d look over any homework you had. If it’s a question-based assignment, don’t be surprised if he can work out anything you’re getting stuck on in a heartbeat. 

| ✧ I don’t think he’d be great at writing, but he’ll still support you through it, and give you some points to expand on in your papers.

❈ If you have time to take a break, he’d demand that you play a round or two of his game with him. Or five. “And bring the snacks.”

❈ He’d lay on your lap or shoulder as you work, and would occasionally reach up to kiss you softly and encourage you.

✧･ﾟ: * Akutagawa

❈ Unlike the other two, Aku would be completely oblivious the whole time. He wouldn’t even notice anything until he walks in on you crying, and would just freeze.

❈ You could almost see the calculations going on in this boy’s head. “Did I do something? No. Did I not do something? Not that I’m aware. Should I try to comfort them? We’ll see.”

| ✧ I feel like he wouldn’t try to comfort you as directly. He’d leave, and then “conveniently wander back in” with your favorite snack and drink, before sitting next to you (really he prepared it and got back as fast as he could).

❈ His version of comforting words would likely have a little bit of insults in it, he’s also very blunt and doesn’t see any reason to hold back.

| ✧ “So are you going to tell me what’s wrong, and how I can fix it?” For as aggressive as it might come across, he means it in the best way. Once he gets attached to someone, he’d do anything for them, and if something is actively upsetting his partner? Someone is about to lose at least a limb.

❈ When you tell him that it’s the stress from finals, he’d relax a little bit (he was still worried that he messed something up) and would start to talk you through the potential options. If that mean him taking out a professor? He doesn’t mind.

✧ He’d also probably make you take a break, even if that means grabbing your laptop with Rashomon and putting it aside (assuming you can save the assignment probably).

Summary of the BSD Stage Dead Apple Synopsis

Under the cut for Spoilers!

▼Beginning

The play starts with Atsushi looking for Dazai (as tasked by Kunikida to attend the ADA mtg) Differing from the movie, he doesn't find him. 

Atsushi meets Shibusawa on the street instead when Shibusawa saved an elderly crossing the street, making him think that Shibusawa is a kind person.

Atsushi thinks that they have met somewhere before but can't remember it exactly.

Kyouka then meets Atsushi about the Ability Users Suicide Case.

▼Akutagawa pursues Shibusawa

Chuuya and Akutagawa are talking on the phone. Akutagawa is tasked to pursue Shibusawa as the perpetrator of the Dragon Head Conflict. 

However, Akutagawa was physically attacked by Dazai from behind - he snapped Aku’s neck, then stepped on him - causing him to lose consciousness (though he recognizes Dazai before passing out).

Dazai then comes with Shibusawa.

The day when Dazai took Akutagawa to the Port Mafia is shown. Akutagawa wakes up from the dream and remembers Dazai attacked him.

An Ability user suddenly comes out of nowhere. Akutagawa fights him and realizes that he can't use Rashomon.

Chuuya comes to save him. Apparently, it's an Ability that got separated from its user.

Chuuya then explains Shibusawa's Ability and says that the mist engulfing Yokohama is actually the breath of a dragon.

Akutagawa then asks why Chuuya's Ability doesn't separate from him.

Chuuya answers that his Ability is quite special and isn't something small that can be taken easily by this fog. And if his Ability happens to separate from him, it will be the end of Yokohama.

Chuuya gives Akutagawa a new mission - to kill Dazai, because he's the one who took Shibusawa to Yokohama.

Akutagawa laughs, saying that he doesn't believe that because the Dazai now wants peace in Yokohama.

Chuuya laughs at him. He says that he's known Dazai for 7 years and were once partners so he knows Dazai - he knows that no one can tell what Dazai is thinking. There's a monster inside Dazai that no one can understand.

Aku claims that he can understand Dazai so Chuuya asks him why Dazai left the Mafia, but Aku couldn't answer. Chuuya says that he doesn't care if Aku looks up to Dazai but as for him, he's never looked up to Dazai even once. He then tells him to his face that Aku going all "Dazai-san, Dazai-san" and accepting everything he says - is probably the reason why Dazai doesn't approve of him.

Aku gets mad and attacks him to no avail. Chuuya taunts him further saying that if he doesn't do something about this mist, he'll remain weak.

Rashomon appears in the background. Chuuya says that Rashomon is just looking at him and not attacking him as if putting Aku to a test.

Chuuya says that without his Ability, Aku can never land a single punch at him.

Aku accepts the mission and says that he will beat Chuuya right after.

Dazai walks to the center. There's a voice-over of Oda when he told Dazai that the good or bad side doesn't make much difference to him.

Shibusawa arrives.

Dazai says he's happy working with him.

Fyodor arrives saying that Shibusawa shouldn't believe Dazai. (Fyodor does a mini violin performance, talk about grand entrance lol)

It seems that Dazai didn't know beforehand that Fyodor is part of the plan.

Fyodor says that he's just a rat on the side that will help a bit.

Dazai realizes that Fyodor's role is to keep him in check.

Shibusawa says that he can actually accomplish all his plans on his own without them, but it would be boring.

Dazai agrees that it indeed wouldn't be boring because no one knows who will betray who.

▼Atsushi, Aku, Kyouka in the Mafia passage

Atsushi argues with Aku on the way, saying things that it's his fault that Kyouka suffered in the Mafia. He told them that he should never come close to Kyouka ever and talk as if he knows her.

Aku then retorts back asking Atsushi what he actually knows about Kyouka.

Atsushi says that he knows a lot stating things like Kyouka likes tofu and bunnies, and hates lightning.

Aku asks him about her past but Atsushi wasn't able to answer. Aku narrates that Kyouka's parents were killed by Demon Snow and she was picked up by the Mafia, and was then trained by a Port Mafia Executive known as the best Assassin in the world (in reference to Verlaine).

Aku then adds that he also knows that Kyouka hates flies and dogs, and likes ghosts and hydrangeas. He knows more about Kyouka so it's his win.

Unable to come up with other things about Kyouka, Atsushi resorts to bickering.

Atsushi: You're a sore loser!

Aku: Orphanage castaway!

Sushi, visibly hurt from Aku's comeback: You don't change clothes!

Aku, visibly hurt from Sushi's comeback:  I wash it every time!

Sushi: Huh? Do you also wear that when sleeping?

Aku: I'm gonna kill you!

They were then stopped by Kyouka.

Before they go out of the passageway, Kyouka attempts to check if her phone can connect somewhere. 

Aku gently stops her telling her that that phone is the one used to control her Ability and would be bad if it connects. 

Kyouka says that there's nothing to worry about because there's no signal. 

Kyouka asks him if Aku tried the Mafia's communication device and Aku says that it can't connect too.

(Note: When Aku talks to Kyouka his voice is calm and softer than usual)

Atsushi, feeling out of place, silently watches them from the side. "You two, you actually get along well, huh..." 

▼Demon Snow Battle

The trio go back outside the streets and comes to face Demon Snow. They ran back to the Mafia passageway but Demon Snow just follows them and slices the door. Byakko then also appears.

Kyouka's phone rings. When she answers it, the scene flashbacks to the time when her parents died (same scene with the manga) with her mom explaining what truly happened, and then advises Kyouka how to control Demon Snow.

They were able to beat Demon Snow after and the Ability goes back to Kyouka.

▼More Aku, Atsushi, and Kyouka

Aku, Atsushi, and Kyouka continue to walk in the mist-covered street. Atsushi suggests to Kyouka that they should hold hands so they don't get separated. Kyouka agreed and held out her hand, but then asked Atsushi about Aku.

Sushi: Eh?

Kyouka:

Sushi: Eh?

Kyouka: Should I hold his hand?

Sushi: No way!

Kyouka: Then you should hold his hand

Sushi: Ehhhh, t-there's no way I would... i-it's Akutagawa...

Kyouka:

Sushi: Aahh, there are no other hands in here so fine!

Atsushi settles to offer the dangling part of his belt for Aku to hold on to (lol he's pointing his ass in the process because the belt is on his back like a tail). Aku reaches for it, but was taken away by Rashomon before Atsushi and Kyouka can see him

▼Aku vs Rashomon Battle

Aku uses his gun to fight against Rashomon. Just when he thought he won, he is then caught and pierced by Rashomon. At first Aku thought that Rashomon is fighting him to test if he's worth it as Rashomon's "owner", but then realized that Rashomon is actually filled with wrath - Aku's wrath towards his weak self.

Scenes flashback to Chuuya telling Aku why Dazai doesn't approve of him, of Atsushi telling him that he lost against him and is still not recognized by Dazai, and of Dazai telling him that his new subordinate is better and he doesn't need Aku.

Aku makes Rashomon remember all these, of what they went through, of what they are mad about, of what they both desire. If Aku doesn't beat Rashomon then he will be a part of Shibusawa's collection and will never get what they desire.

Before Rashomon ends Aku, he sets the bomb off and beats him eventually.

Aku returns to Atsushi and Kyouka thereafter, and Atsushi was surprised to see him covered in bruises.

▼White Trio Betrayal Scene

Fyodor sees Dazai suspiciously trying to enter the Draconia room. They went inside after Fyodor tells him that Shibusawa is not there. Dazai reveals his motives to Fyodor, and Fyodor hands him the crystals. Before Dazai can touch them Shibusawa stabs him from behind. Dazai dies. (scenes are almost the same as the movie)

After Dazai dies, Shibusawa also kills Fyodor, grabbing him on the top of his head, lifting him up, and then breaking his neck.

Shibusawa laughs (like a villain) saying that his plans succeeded.

▼More Aku, Atsushi, and Kyouka

Aku, Atsushi, and Kyouka are riding an elevator, standing side by side. Because the ride is taking quite long, Atsushi tries to make small talk to relieve the awkward atmosphere.

Sushi: Your Ability has returned to you, right? How does it feel?

Aku: None of your business.

*silence*

Sushi: Looking from this angle, your nose looks nice. (literally "you have a high-bridged nose" used as a compliment in Jp)

*silence*

Sushi: Aahh, with this three the talk is going nowhere..

Kyouka: *tries to narrate Momotaro (a popular Jp folklore)*

Sushi: Ah, I'm sorry Kyouka-chan, I didn't mean to force you

▼Chuuya at the Special Ability Dept

Chuuya arrives at the Special Ability Department Office. He is stopped by the guards but Chuuya beats them all (fight scenes were shown).

Chuuya arrives at the main office, but Ango is only showing up in the scene via a video screen. Tsujimura is in the office btw.

Chuuya and Ango talk about the government's involvement with Shibusawa (same with the movie).

Chuuya threatens Ango that he will kill the people in the office if Ango doesn't tell him about the case of Shibusawa now.

▼White Trio

Shibusawa takes Dazai's Ability crystal, but realizes that it is not the one he's been looking for.

Fyodor suddenly appears from his back, shooting Shibusawa with a gun.

Apparently, the one Shibusawa killed earlier was not Fyodor himself, but his separated Ability.

Fyodor then kills Shibusawa with a knife, making him remember his death (same with the movie).

▼Dragon Appears

Fyodor does his poetry speech about the dragon lol

The dragon appears as animation in the background.

Deadly Drive plays as bg music after!

Ango asks Chuuya to fight the dragon, believing that only his Ability can do it just as when they fought Guivre in the past.

Chuuya complains that the government just always does nothing but order people around while not getting their hands dirty.

He accepts the mission and asks Ango's life in return.

Plane scene with Tsujimura is almost the same as the movie. Chuuya throws his gloves and activates Corruption.

This scene involves his actor Uechan flying in a harness, where he did flips a few times. On his background is an animation of the levitated rubbles and the building he used to throw at the dragon.

▼Soukoku scene

Chuuya shouts Dazai's name, and punches him waking him up. Dazai touches his cheek to deactivate Corruption. (Same lines with the movie, yes Dazai is still Snow White)

Chuuya asks him to let go but Dazai refuses saying that the place they are in is where the mist is the most concentrated and Arahabaki will end up separating from him.

▼Atsushi reflection with Byakko

Atsushi realizes that the orphanage director must have known that he killed Shibusawa, but wondered why he never told him.

The orphanage director appears at the end saying that he hid the truth from Atsushi because he thought Atsushi wouldn't be able to accept it and would be crushed (mentally) once he knew about himself.

Dazai arrives saying that Atsushi was saved because of them

Atsushi butts in saying that Dazai was the one who did

(same lines with the movie)

After Atsushi says the "more beautiful" line, Oda's voice-over plays when he told Dazai to go to the side that saves people because that's a little bit more beautiful.

▼Aftermath Chuuya

Ango calls Chuuya saying that the battle is finished thanks to them, and now he's ready to give his life in return.

Chuuya just laughs at him saying that his life isn't enough to pay for this. He also tells him that he understands that Ango was just a small fry in the government six years ago so wasn't able to do anything about the Shibusawa case. Ango thanks him but still tries to insist but Chuuya hangs up.

Akutagawa shows up, but he doesn't bow at Chuuya (unlike in the movie) and just continues walking after Chuuya told him that Dazai is alive. Chuuya calls him to lend his shoulder because he can't move and gestures him to come closer.

Aku does and Chuuya laughs at how unwilling he looks and asks if Aku is still mad that Chuuya called him weak. Aku says that he's not bothered at all.

Chuuya tells him that he shouldn't worry because they're both included in Dazai's plans, which means that Dazai thinks that they are essential in beating Shibusawa.

Aku remains silent. Chuuya then tells him that as Dazai's ex-partner, he's gonna say it - that Dazai approves of Aku. At the very least, Chuuya does approve of him too.

Aku just says that he's nothing compared to Chuuya.

▼Days after

Atsushi and Kyouka are back at the Agency, where they wave off to everyone as they go on a new mission.

Voice-overs of the ADA stage play cast were played sending them off.

Tanizaki: Take care!

Naomi: Stay safe!

Kunikida: Don't forget your report after.

Ranpo: Get me sweets on your way home!

Yosano: If possible, go back here with injuries, okay?

Kenji: Let's eat some gyudon later!

Fukuzawa: Atsushi, Kyouka, take care and come back safely.

▼Closing

Chuuya talks to Mori on the phone, reporting that the mission has been accomplished. 

However, he gets instructed to do the send-off or the farewell greeting to the fans on the stage.

Chuuya, angrily to the audience: What are you looking at, huh? 

Send-off? *takes a sit elegantly and stares at the crowd*

Ugh, okay,, *stands up*

Be careful not to be engulfed by the mist when you go home, okay? See ya.

Highschool AU

Akutagawa Ryuunosuke:

Theatre kid, but also the dark and mysterious loner.

He acts like he doesn’t care much about anything, least of all academics, but he actually works quite hard.

Repeatedly gets into trouble with authority, but since he’s fairly gifted at nearly everything, they let it slide  

Refuses to believe that, though, because he holds himself to stupidly high standards. What’s the point of just being good at something? He has to be the best.

If you’re interested in him, you’re going to have to be the one to broach the subject, because there’s no way in hell he’d ever do it, even if he reciprocates.

When him and his s/o first start dating, people give them weird looks in the hallways. The resident mysterious loner? In a relationship? It’s the talk everywhere for quite a while.

You would have to walk him a little through the motions of being in a relationship. Suggest date ideas, drag him to a movie, stay up late texting him, and wouldn’t be long before he picks up and starts reciprocating these gestures.

He’s a little clueless, but he means well, please be patient with my dark floofy babey

He’s too intimidating for anyone else to approach him, anyway, but even so, he treats his s/o like they’re the only person that matters in the world.

Atsushi Nakajima:

Probably the most normal of them all xD

Teachers adore him, classmates look up to him, and his friends love him beyond measure. He’s just so sweet that you can’t help but like him.

Very helpful. Will agree to crash tutor you the night before exam if you ask him to.

Probably on the track team too.

His friends mean a lot to him, and he’s very amicable to everyone in general. The kind of person to invite you to his cafeteria table if he sees you sitting alone.

Gifted at athletics as well as academics, but gets flustered and politely denies if somebody praises him for it.

It’s not effortless, though. He works very hard for everything he has achieved.

Will crush on you from afar for months on end before his friends finally get fed up and physically push him to you.

“E-eh? I’m sorry, I d-didn’t mean to bump into you like that. I just…I wanted…uhhh wouldyouliketoogooutwithmesometime!?”

Is over the moon when you say yes, and even more so when the two of you progress into a relationship.

The sweetest boyfriend ever. If you tell him you’ve had a bad day, he will turn up outside your door with chocolates and cozy up to watch some sappy feel-good movie to make you feel better.

He is nice, but that doesn’t mean he will ever tolerate anyone talking shit about you or your relationship with him. Do not test him.

Dazai Osamu:

Resident popular bastard. You cannot convince me otherwise.

Also double-times as the class clown sometimes. Being constantly sleep-deprived and having no self-preservation instincts definitely proves helpful for that.

Verrry popular with the ladies, but doesn’t stick with one for too long.

Also gets into trouble with authority a lot, but manages to smooth-talk his way out of it.

Plus, he’s so effortlessly gifted at everything he tries that it makes him kind of indispensable. Academics, sports, art, music, extra-curriculars, you name it, this dude has got it nailed. The school cannot afford to put him in too much trouble.

However, just because he’s a prodigy doesn’t mean he actually cares much about any of it. The only things Dazai cares about is amusing himself enough so that he doesn’t kill himself for one more day.

Has a secret affinity for classic literature and poetry, but hates the teacher.

Doesn’t pay attention in class and never studies for any of the exams but still manages to ace every single one of them, somehow.

The kind of person to throw paper balls at the teacher during class because he’s bored.

Gets along with most people, but has a small, intimate circle of friends he really cares about.

Analyzing Atsushi and Akutagawa pt.1 (I have a lot to say so there's gonna be a part 2)

first of all I want to clarify that I don’t think any of this is going to happen but it’d be really nice if it did... however, since BSD is a fiction story and my analysis is based on what would be ideal in the real life I don’t think it’s too likely for this to happen.

I think Atsushi should leave the ADA and Akutagawa should leave the Port Mafia.

To begin with, I’d like to tell you how I came up with this idea; 

The thing is that in the BSD fandom there’s this (sadly too popular) discussion about Atsushi being a good, strong and entertaining main character or not. Many times I’ve seen people discussing this as if it was simply and wholy a matter of yes or no and the more the discussion grows the more angry I get (but i get angry too easily so don’t mind me).

In my opinion Atsushi is not weak, I actually don’t think any character in BSD is tbh (I mean they’d beat the shit out of me even if they don’t know how to fight because all ever do with my life is sit on my tiny piano and play my silly little mozart). But leaving the physical strenght aside, I still don’t think he’s a weak/strong or boring/entretaining character. I think the charm of Atsushi as a MC lies elsewhere.

Yes he’s pretty, he’s kind, he has an e-boy haircut and I’d let him step on me with those worn-out dirty boots.

But he’s also a common person living among prodigies and demons.

(Really, I feel like standing up and appaluding Asagiri for choosing Atsushi as the mc and writing him the way he did because there’s nothing that could make my shitty life better than knowing that the protagonist of my favourite story in the world is someone I can relate so much to that I actually ended up learning more about myself through him.)

And yes, we’ve seen this happen many times in countless stories (yes yes haikyuu for example) where the plot worked as good as any other even though the MC took longer than the rest to get to where they were but managed to do so in the end (unlike the typical shonen mc that levels-up overnight) plus what people mostly criticize about Atsushi as a MC are his constant war flashbacks and how much he self-doubts himself.

So I came to the conclusion that it's not really Atsushi and his journey as a MC but his unresolved trauma what seems to annoy the audience instead.

And that’s how I came up with a fiction-breaking answer to your problems; If you want Atsushi to stop suffering over and over again for the same things, he has to leave the ADA and get some real therapy.

(Don’t misunderstand me, even if I accept him and love him as he’s now, I’d still love it if this were the real final for him bc it hurts me to see him suffer all the time.)

Think about it, Atsushi is just a poor boy, abandoned by hell itself and thrown into the street in the worst conditions a human being could be just to end up running into a maniac manipulator with a good heart that offers him a roof over his head on the condition he accepts a job that Atsushi himself says doesn’t want and is too afraid to be a part of and that he tried to leave once but failed to do so and then felt too guilty to try again because he eats guilt and remorse with milk for breakfast so now he has no choice but risk his life, face his archenemy physical pain to beat his enemies and constantly fear that he might not be doing what’s right or being good enough while having a huge responsibility on his bare shoulders.

As it stands, his situation can only be explained by that famous saying “it’s not that you don’t want to grow/heal, it’s that the environment is not apt for you to do it”. Yeah, no wonder he hasn’t made any progress overnight and feels so hopeless at times.

I love everyone in the ADA (not you Dazai) and their found family made out of scraps and angsty love is all I ever whish for, but just because he’s finally found people to rely on that care about him doesn’t mean it’s enough to heal so much damage (suprise suprise your family and love won’t always be enough to heal trauma). Atsushi won’t overcome his fears by facing them head-on nor will he become more independent by fighting on his own (actually we all know he hates fighting alone and that’s because he’s not in a place where he can trust in himself yet) instead, it’s very likely he’ll end up pushing himself to the limit to get “stronger” faster and end up loosing sight of himself.

And here's where Akutagawa enters.

The reason why I also mention him is because Akutagawa for me is the perfect example of why Atsushi has to stop now before it’s too late. 

Akutagawa has been past the point of no return for a long time now, he’s fought so hard to get "better" faster for the sake of being recognised by Dazai that he stopped recognising what’s real and what’s not. Akutagawa is already strong enough and has everything he needs but can’t recognise it because he works in a place where the more and faster you kill the better you are, so even though he’s the most feared member of the PM he doesn’t believe it because he hasn’t heard Dazai saying it.

To me it makes perfect sense that Dazai insists so much on making them face each other, I mean, Atsushi has everything Akutagawa wants and Akutagawa has everything Atsushi wants and as long each they stay blinded by their own unrealistic expectations they’ll keep risking their lives for something they will never accomplish under those circumstances, it turns into a vicious cycle where Dazai seems to be the only one benefiting from this since he now has two UltraRare awakened subordinates to fight for the sake of his book or whatever he wants. (but don’t let me get too excited about this topic ‘cause I could talk about Dazai for 3 days)

Yes I know I know, it was a very good thing that Asagiri decided to break that toxic vicious cycle and made one of them think for both to finally make Atsushi challenge Akutagawa to stop killing for six months as a condition to fight with him (that's called GROWTH, breaking out of the cage, abandoning the nest, etc).

But unlike Atsushi, Akutagawa doesn’t have many people to rely on when the time all of his enemies show up -after mori has beaten the fuck out of him for not showing results and lowers his rank to the same Oda had- to make him pay (let’s be honest the mafia couldn’t care less about the errand boy).

Basically, Aku has to leave the Port Mafia in order to stay safe, gain perspective and find a reason to live of his own rather than sit and wait for dazai to approve of his every move (the same goes for Sushi, he has to stop throwing himself off of high buildings to save people and stopping bullets with his mouth to be validated by his peers). 

But yeah, Akutagawa is probably not going to leave the PM and Atsushi is probably not going to leave the ADA but as someone who really wants to see them doing some real growth and barely stands this “just forget your trauma and fight” thing that’s going on I had to say it.

I mean, look at Dazai, it was no untill Oda told him he clearly wasn’t going to find a purpose to live that he decided that mayyyyybe the PM was not a good place to try spiritual healing.

What’s more, I’d say almost every single character in BSD is too fucked up to be able to heal in the kind of environmet they work at and that they must have let the pain sink or whatever bc they jsut don’t want to change their lives but idk man that’s fine if it makes them happy.

Analysing Shin Soukoku’s Fighting Style: the Team-Up

So, to write this, I watched two fights: SS vs Fitz and SS vs Ivan, as well as the Pushkin pursuit. I didn’t rewatch Dead Apple and, frankly, I don’t remember much of what happened in that movie. If this analysis seems incomplete without fight data from the fight against Shibusawa, please let me know! I’ll try to find a copy of the movie somewhere/the Boss fight itself and add a follow-up post. Anyway, onward!

SS’s dynamic is summed up fairly well by one exchange from the Ivan fight:

Atsushi: “Stay put, sickly man.” Akutagawa: “Keep running, fool.”

It not only foreshadows their next strategy, where they do just that, but their fighting dynamic in general (and also their character arcs, I’ll probably talk about that near the end). 

But, let’s start at the beginning, with the Fitz fight. They don’t do much collaboration in this battle, considering Atsushi ends up getting in Akutagawa’s way during the melee. They only truly worked together three times. 

The first was a double punch against Fitz. The second was when Atsushi fell off the side and Akutagawa screamed his iconic line, “JINKOOOO!”, and created a bridge with Rashoumon for him to run upon. Rashoumon as a transportation device seems to be a common theme later, as well. But then the third time is when Atsushi goes in for a tiger-assisted punch. Akutagawa wraps his fist in Rashoumon, which had previously been stated to act like muscle and shown to be strong enough to defend against Fitz’s strikes. It provided enough augmentation that Fitz, having used up all his money, was knocked off the side of the Moby Dick. 

Evident from this fight is one main thing: Atsushi acts as frontline assault while Akutagawa provides support from behind. Now, because Fitz is only one attacker with no area-affect capabilities, Akutagawa doesn’t have much else to do. 

However, Ivan was not so limited. While Atsushi goes for a straight attack, bouncing off of Rashoumon’s ribbons as both speed enhancement and to keep off the ground, Akutagawa swipes at the grasping hands from the earth. He takes out this preliminary defense while providing a mechanism for Atsushi to do his job--punch Ivan’s lights out. Atsushi was absolutely bait, which is acknowledged by both parties in this fight, as Akutagawa is the one to ultimately impale Ivan from below. Aku may be mid-range support, but he’s still deadly as fuck. 

We see this kind of dynamic during the Pushkin pursuit, where Aku is riding on Atsushi’s back. Pushkin detonates a bunch of explosions to try and fend them off. Atsushi’s only job is to run and follow Aku’s directions to dodge the attacks, and Aku also takes care of the projectiles heading for them. 

Perhaps the most interesting form of their collaboration is their combo attack Kokuto Zessou, which, annoyingly, I have not found a single translation for. It’s not even something they say during the manga, so I don’t know what it means. (If you do know, please, comment and let me know and I’ll edit this post.) 

Edit: I was told it may mean Black Tiger Claws, But they weren’t sure.

Akutagawa explains their final gambit against Ivan. First, he gives Atsushi his cloak, which is basically his ability. Rashoumon can eat physical space, so he uses it to eat the part of the pond Atsushi was trapped in to free him. By eating space and then “expanding and contracting the space he detached”, he basically gave Atsushi a bastardized teleportation ability. It’s janky and unclear how this works, but by God is it effective. 

Atsushi basically then whips himself into a spinning top of violence. The reason this does so well against Ivan’s rocks, which didn’t reform after being struck, is the combination of Beast Beneath the Moonlight and Rashoumon. The tiger’s claws can rip through the very fabric of an ability and Rashoumon can rip through any physical object. With Rashoumon-augmented claws, Atsushi can rip through literally anything--including Ivan’s defenses. 

So, what’s shin soukoku’s greatest asset? It’s their ability to work together, as begrudging as it is. They don’t actually need to discuss a plan. On the battlefield, they instinctually know what the other is going to do and compensates in order to take out the enemy. They acknowledge this when they both say during the Ivan fight that “How many times do you think we’ve tried to kill each other?” 

Their abilities complement each other the same way For the Tainted Sorrow’s Corruption and No Longer Human do. Atsushi as the main event, one could say, whether that means he’s the one doing most of the attacking or playing bait. Akutagawa as mid-range support. They compensate for each other’s weaknesses. 

Atsushi is really, really bad at dodging. He tanks whatever hits him because of his healing factor. Akutagawa’s position behind him as support means he can block and eliminate blows that would get in Atsushi’s way and potentially slow him down.

Akutagawa is not a very physical, up-close fighter. Atsushi is, which means Atsushi can tank whatever punishment would take Aku out of commission and deal devastating blows. If Atsushi fails to bludgeon the enemy to death, Aku is right behind, sneaking in a ribbon of Rashoumon to impale them from behind. 

This brings me back to their exchange:

Atsushi: “Stay put, sickly man.” Akutagawa: “Keep running, fool.”

Akutagawa stays put to play support behind Atsushi, who runs in front to deal/tank damage. This even kinda fits with their character arcs, which, honestly, I think is really awesome. Feel free to skip straight to “so what happens if they’re fighting you” if you’re uninterested in character rambling. 

Akutagawa doesn’t actually go through much character growth over the course of the anime and even the manga, though I hope this will change with the next chapter. He is, fundamentally, still the same angry child abandoned by his mentor, still searching for a reason to be worth acknowledgment. He stands still, beating at a brick wall. The healthy thing to do would be to take a step back, try something new, because killing people to “prove his existence” Gaara-style doesn’t seem to be doing anything. But instead, he continues along his path. 

Atsushi, on the other hand, shows immense character growth and it’s because he’s always running forward. He’s always trying to be better, and he grows because he’s working past his childhood trauma to get rid of the specter of his headmaster in his mind. Atsushi is learning and growing and coming into himself over the course of the anime. 

Akutagawa fights standing still most of the time. Atsushi is always charging forward, fist outstretched. It’s a nice bit of symbolism that the writer in me deeply appreciates, considering, with their diametrically opposed philosophies, they’re already narrative foils.

So what happens if they’re fighting you? Well! Uh. There isn’t actually that much hope for you, but that’s okay! Take Aku out of commission first. Atsushi doesn’t have amazing situational awareness, so deal a lot of physical damage to Aku to start. Make sure he’s not aware enough to sneakily put Rashoumon at your back and impale you, because I’m assuming you don’t have a tiger inside you to fix your wounds up. 

Area-effect attacks are where you’re going to have the best time. Ivan initially wins because his golem was indestructible and he had really large rocks to throw around and deal damage to both Atsushi and Akutagawa. But if we’re being serious here, you need a plan. 

Akutagawa and Atsushi are very straightforward fighters. Physical defenses have been established to be about as useful as tissue paper. So you’d need to trick them somehow, like with Ivan’s body double, to gain an advantage. Past that, I’m pretty sure you need to get the hell out. Which is my advice for most of these analyses, but hey, it still applies, lol.

Suffice to say, Dazai would be beyond irritating. From the moment his eyes would open, he would need your undivided attention under no circumstances (and that would also mean no going back to sleep unless he was involved). Poking and prodding at your facial features, blowing raspberries on the crook of your neck, tugging at the ends of your disheveled hair, and his personal favorite—barely letting you drift back into a peaceful slumber then waking you back up quickly in alarm. He would be so merciless that you would eventually have to either snap at him or cave into his desires (and judging by his cute morning glow, we all know you wouldn’t be able to stay mad at him). Once you would finally decide that 6:30 isn’t THAT early, you would let Dazai have his bratty way; there would be no complaints though. Dazai would definitely make your decisions pay off.

Mornings with Atsushi would be dripping with thoughtfulness and a whole lot of sweetness. It wouldn’t appear that way at first seeing as you would awake to his side of the bed being empty and cold; however, the delicious aroma of breakfast would make your spirits lift. Atsushi wouldn’t let you participate in anything major, for he would want to treat you to a nice surprising breakfast. He would probably give you small tasks like fetching the measuring spoons or getting him the ingredients out of the cabinet. Obviously that would grow tedious though, so you would resort to Plan B—back hugging Atsushi as he tended to the food on the stove. Nuzzling your face in the space between his shoulder blades, peppering his neck with sweet kisses, and caressing your fingers along his abs—Atsushi might avert his attention away from the food for a moment just to remind you of how much he loves you through a passionate kiss.

Playful—so playful. First and foremost, leaving the comfort of your bed isn’t even going to count as an option. It would be an unspoken understanding between the two of you, you would just automatically know that there was no place you’d rather be. With that being said, you would find entertainment in just existing together. You would trace shapes and patterns on his back and he would try to guess what you were drawing (being surprisingly right at most), you would play two truths and a lie (which would end quickly because you already knew everything about one another), he would humor you by whispering sweet nothings in your ear, and most of all humor himself by discovering your tickle spot and using it to his advantage. There would be some play fighting, but that would ultimately end in a makeout session (which there would be A LOT of). Mornings with Ken would just be fun.

A lazy morning with Aku wouldn’t be so lazy for him, but more lazy for you. The last time you had woke up too sore to walk, you had made Ravi vow to you that the next time it happened he would cater to your every need. Needless to say, when you would awake in the morning too sore to hardly move, you would be giving your boyfriend hell. There would be many frantic apologies emitting from his mouth and a lot of useless massaging. Eventually he would draw you a nice warm bath and that would soften you up a bit. At the end of the morning, however, all you would want was his company. So, Aku would lay with you. It would be the best (and I mean THE best) spooning you would ever experience in your life. Hand slipping under the fabric of your shirt, rubbing the soreness in your abdomen away, he would place lingering kisses on the dips and curves of your shoulders, reminding you of how much he truly loved you. Of course, he wouldn’t be able to swallow the pride of making his girlfriend sore, which may result in an elbow to his gut.
