synopsis: you set your bff Riki up with Eunchae, one of your friends, on a date.. but what happens when you realise that you might have caught feelings for him along the way. So who will he choose, you or Eunchae?

PART ONE

Nishimura Riki has been your best friend since kindergarten and you don’t remember the last time you went out without him. It was safe to say that you did everything together. You’ve been through crushes, breakups, and all of that stuff together. You were in college now.

And, here you are texting him whether he would like to go on a date with your friend Eunchae. And he said yes. That answer was one you did not expect at all. ‘Okay, sure’ you type into your chat. You already asked Eunchae and she said yes as well. You told them a bit about each other since they'd never met before, just to have a few convo starters and prevent very awkward silences…

It was now the day of their date and you took it upon yourself to find Riki the perfect outfit and damn, did it look good. You chose a black shirt with his favourite anime’s print on it and some baggy blue jeans. It looked perfect. While you sent him off, you actually felt like a proud mom who was watching her son graduate…

You were super happy about this and god, did you hope this went well. He always told you how it always seemed like he pushed girls away when actually he was just trying to get to know them before a relationship. So this was a chance for him to redeem himself and finally get a girl… you couldn’t wait till they got together and you could tell everyone about you playing their Cupid.

Now you just needed to wait until he got back in a few hours.. a few hours without him wouldn’t be that hard, would it?

You got off your bed and made your way to the couch to watch tv but you just couldn’t without him there to watch with you. So you resorted to scrolling through social media with a cup of instant ramen next to you. A FEW HRS LATER

You hear the keys to your apartment jangling and watch as Riki walks in with a big smile on his face

“Phew,” you think “it must have gone well if he’s smiling so much”.

“y/nnie, the date went so well, we talked a lot, shared a bowl of ice cream and we walked around the place for a bit! I hope we could do that again…” he says, happily. “That’s great riks, did you get her number too??”, you ask, excitedly. “Yeah, I did and oh my god she’s so pretty! Like I know you told me she was pretty but she was just more beautiful than I thought!!!!”

“Okay that’s really great ki! And also, wanna watch that new kdrama with me? I’ve been wanting to watch it for a while…” you say with a soft tone towards the end.

“Okay sure Y/nnie! Even I've been wanting to watch that one”

You make some popcorn and sit down next to each other on the couch, your head on his shoulder and your fingers intertwined(in a friendly way of course….)

Physical affection wasn’t something rare in your friendship and that’s why a lot of people thought you two were dating. Well, all you had to say about today was it was a great day! Riki’s date went great, and you were watching a new kdrama with him too! What more could you ask for?

•the last thing he wants to do is hurt you, so he most of the time tries to keep his responses curt and to the point and walks out before he starts yelling.

•if you grab his arm, he’ll look back at you and repeat what he said.

• he cant let you know about wild card. He cant let you know about the person he used to be. He can’t ever, ever, let you meet shidou. He cant ever, ever, ever, let you see him cry.

•all arguments with him lead absolutely nowhere, so you’d better change your approach with him to get what your looking for out of him.

• do not, i repeat, do not ever slap/hit him. He wont hit you back, but now you’ve instantly made him lose any will to preserve your feelings and have a normal conversation

•he will think of the most foul, personal, targeted insults known to man. Lots of “kill yourself”s on his part. You two will without a doubt break up after this.

•he wont act like he didn’t feel betrayed, and he’ll touch the spot you hurt him at while he falls asleep, and tries not to cry.

•half the times, chigiri can admit that he was wrong, but he’ll NEVER apologize

It basically used to be a greeting for him back when he fucked his ankle up. they’d see his wheelchair before they saw him. Theyd say sorry before they even said his name.

Daniel wishes he smoked. He doesn’t, has only ever lit a dart a couple of times when he thought he could fit in with the cool kids better, but he hates how it tastes, and considering how much cardio Michael makes him do, it just would be terrible for him overall. 

But sometimes he wishes he did, if only to give him something to do with his hands, if only to give him an excuse to step away from everyone and everything for a few minutes. 

Not that that stops him from pulling away, anyway. It’s an exceptionally cold day in Zandvoort and he’s still dealing with the news breaking about his leaving McLaren. He really doesn’t want to talk to anyone. 

He finds a spot in the paddock that’s blessedly quiet, which is rare considering that it’s media day, but he really can’t be arsed to care right now. He needs to be alone. 

Except when he turns his head to the left, he sees Lando sitting on the ground a bunch of meters away from him, looking as dejected as he feels, which makes no sense. He’d think that Lando would be in the garage or something, probably relishing in the fact that his position as first driver has been solidified. 

Daniel wants to ignore him. Sure, they’ve become better friends over the year, but Lando is still his main competitor. He clenches his jaw. He’s better off not paying him any attention. They haven’t even spoken properly since the news was announced. 

But then Lando sniffles, peering at his phone, and that’s when Daniel’s phone goes off, the notification that Lando’s posted something new in his stories appearing on his screen. Yes, he does have Lando’s notifications on. Sue him. They’re friends. 

So Daniel opens the story up and sees the announcement: I wish her the world and have so much respect for her and all she does as such an amazing and strong women with nothing but kindness. 

Ah, Christ. 

Pls respect our decision and respect our but more Importantly and especially her privacy moving forward. Thank you for your endless support.

Daniel locks his phone. Now he really can’t ignore Lando. 

“Hey,” Daniel calls out, and Lando looks up, then sees Daniel. His expression goes from shocked to shuttered in the span of a few seconds. 

“Hey,” Lando replies, and then fiddles with his phone. The endless pings of notifications seem to cut off immediately. He pockets his phone, and looks away. 

Daniel pushes himself up, makes the short trek to stand next to Lando. 

“Is it okay that I’m here?” Daniel asks.

Lando only sighs, lifts one shoulder up in a shrug, and nods to the spot beside him. He’ll take it. 

Daniel plops down next to him with very little grace, and knocks Lando’s shoulder with his. 

“I’m sorry,” Daniel says. “I just—yeah. I saw.” 

Lando lets out a wet little sob-laugh. “How the hell did you—“

Daniel waves his phone around a little. “Notifs on.” 

“Ah,” Lando says. “That’s—yeah. Didn’t think you would.” 

They sit in silence for a long while because Daniel hasn’t ever been great at comforting people after break ups, especially when he doesn’t know the details in the first place. He just knows that Luisa made Lando happy, and had a chance to meet her a couple of times. 

“D’you—I dunno, d’you wanna talk about it?” 

Lando sighs again. “I don’t wanna—you have enough on your plate. It’s fine. You don’t have to like—pretend or whatever.” 

Daniel nods, figures it’s fair that Lando would think this was pity. 

“To be honest mate, I feel like listening to your shit would give me a chance to stop thinking about my shit, so I’m actually being selfish in asking. But it’s cool too if you’d rather not.” 

Lando’s mouth curls up in a wry little smile. 

“I’m gonna—miss this,” Lando says quietly. 

“Huh?” 

“This whole—you don’t bullshit me,” Lando replies. “Everyone else has been just like—It’s okay, she didn’t deserve you, you didn’t deserve her, all that crap. You’re just. . .  you just wanna know. I appreciate that, I guess.” 

Daniel huffs an exhale through his nose. “That’s me, Mr. I’m Your Therapist For The Next Five Minutes.” 

Lando nods again. He wrings his fingers into a tangle. Daniel sees three spots of raw skin, obviously from where Lando’s bitten through the hangnails. 

“I dunno mate, I thought we were good, but I guess I’m a shit boyfriend or whatever.” 

“This sport eats you alive,” Daniel replies. “It’s hard to like—“ he gestures with his hands. “Juggle everything.”

“I thought it was going okay,” Lando says. “We were both really busy, and I wasn’t—like, I don’t know. Stupid. Like, stupid to get jealous over shit. Stupid to be angry about her not being able to fly out. Stupid to get mad at her for being pissed that I wasn’t giving her enough attention.” 

Daniel is painfully aware of how difficult it actually is trying to maintain a relationship while also just fucking—trying to drive well weekend after weekend. 

“Some people are built for it, and some aren’t, mate, that’s just how it goes.” 

“Yeah,” Lando says. He brings his thumb to his mouth again, dry skin between his teeth, and despite Daniel having the same problem, he still reaches out and takes Lando’s hand and rests it back on Lando’s thigh. 

“Your hands are fucking filthy,” Daniel says. Lando snorts under his breath. His hand is still firm on Lando’s. 

“You’re one to talk,” Lando replies. He uses his other hand to tap on Daniel’s short-as-fuck nails. 

“Well, I’m jobless next year, so I think I get a pass,” Daniel says, nudging him with his shoulder. 

Lando sobers up real quick after that. Crap. 

“I’m sorry—about that—“ 

“Nah, that’s—it’s not on you,” Daniel waves off. “It’s—eh. Just. It’s fine.” 

Lando sighs, moves his hand away in order to rest his weight on both hands behind him. He closes his eyes and tilts his chin up to the sky. Somewhere, a breeze blows through. 

“The fucking pair of us, eh,” Lando says. 

“Yeah.” 

“I didn’t—I don’t want this, you know,” Lando says softly. Daniel looks up to see Lando looking at him, piercing blue-green, wide and shining and sincere. “I—we weren’t great, and you dealt with a lot this year especially, but I thought—I thought you’d have more time. To fix it.” 

Daniel tilts his chin to his chest, the words washing over him. 

“We both lost something thinking we still had time to fix shit,” Daniel replies. “Never know if that’s true or if these things are just meant to happen.” 

“No way to know,” Lando says. 

“Did you know? That the breakup was coming?” Daniel asks. God, he really wishes he had a cigarette or a vape or something to like—just have something to do. Quell the buzz of anxiety that’s coursing through him. 

Lando pulls his lower lip between his teeth, and starts shaking his head, before it turns into a reluctant nod. 

“I gave her the option,” Lando says. “We had a really bad fight and like, we’ve been on the rocks for months now, and we didn’t talk for a while, and I just—I didn’t wanna keep making things harder for us both. So yeah I just—fucking—I asked her if she wanted out and she said yeah. So. Yeah. I didn’t fight it. And now we’re—We’re here.” 

“I’m sorry, mate,” Daniel says. “That blows.” 

“Yeah, I’m sorry too, about—everything, and about you,” Lando replies. 

It’s not quite a heart-to-heart, because how much can they actually talk about their respective hurts stone-cold sober while they’re set to face the fucking media for this weekend’s race. 

But Daniel manages to bring his hand to the back of Lando’s neck and squeeze, and he feels Lando’s tension leave momentarily. 

“It’s gonna be okay, yeah?” Daniel says, willing himself to believe his own words. Neither of them know what the landscape of their tomorrows will look like. He doesn’t know how many fake smiles he has left in him. He doesn’t know where he’ll be next year. Lando doesn’t know how he’s going to move on. 

But at least they have this moment to themselves where they’re just mates sitting next to each other, commiserating their own respective heartaches. 

“Yeah, Danny, it will be, you and me both,” Lando says. He manages a small smile, and it actually reaches his eyes. Daniel hopes that his own looks the same. Lando claps him on the knee. 

“Good talk, okay, sweet,” Daniel says, laughing a little. Lando rolls his eyes, rubs the heel of his hand to his nose. There’s a thin sheen of snot on Lando’s upper lip now from it, but Daniel figures he doesn’t need to point it out. 

They both get up, and Daniel’s ready to make his retreat into hospitality before he feels arms envelop him, arms slung around his neck. His own arms go around Lando immediately, automatic, and Daniel closes his eyes to relish in the solidity of Lando, the firmness of his body, the reality that he’s real and Daniel is real, and for the first time in three weeks, Daniel feels like he belongs in his skin again. 

“Thanks, DR,” Lando says, muffled. “I—yeah. Thank you.” 

Daniel squeezes him harder, and he doesn’t even care if they get papped hugging. It’s been a hell of a time. Shit’s hard. This fucking sport is hard. Dealing with a break up is hard. It’s nice to know that in all of that, he still has this real thing, too. Sure. They’re friends. He isn’t losing Lando by leaving McLaren. This feels like a promise. 

“Anytime, Norris Lando,” Daniel replies with one last squeeze. “Any fuckin’ time, yeah.” 

They pull apart, and Lando’s big hands squeeze his traps one last time before he visibly shakes himself out of it. 

“Christ, let’s get media over and done with,” Lando says. 

“Time to face those cunts,” Daniel replies. They walk back into hospitality together, closer than they normally would, elbows brushing and shoulders bumping.

and while reading LOSH, i finally got it! i thought about how, narratively, it makes PERFECT SENSE why jon and lor zod get married in the future, ESPECIALLY if the earth does get destroyed. if the earth is gone, then so are all of jon’s roots and ties to his human side. it would really only make sense for him to marry a zod, give half his dna to zod’s scientists, let them slap it together with lor zod’s, and thus produce children that could continue to help repopulate new krypton. plus, we know jonno’s stronker than his pops! a zod plus an el with those pesky human genes that makes him stronger? i know in my heart dru zod himself drafted the marriage proposal and took it to clark while he was just tryna have dinner with his wife and son. unfortunately, bc of this decision, mon el now exists. le sigh.

AND IT’S DURING THIS SHIT ASS LOSH RUN THAT I REALIZED... well of course jon/lor zod makes sense in the narrative. jon’s a plot device. he’s the most powerful fucker in the world, arguably. not yet fully realized, hella pretty, falls in love easily. it makes perfect sense that he’d give into an el/zod union if would make peace. and really, nobody really cares about bendis’ LOSH implications, bc it is such a stanky run, but it’s there. and apparently it’s ok bc it makes sense, bc hey, the zods are SUPPOSED to be evil, so why WOULND’T they try to rope jon into marrying their son so that they can be the universe’s power couple? it’s par the course for the zod famileh.

so why does it make people sooooooooo uncomfortable that jon is dating, in the current timeline, someone who is arguably just as politically inclined? what is it about some asian twink with a podcast that THREATENS fandumb’s delicate sensibilities, and i realized..... it’s cuz he’s literally not lois.

and it’s FASCINATING to see how a thematic element in a comic book that’s geared towards 12-22 yr olds garnered such OUTRAGE, when that thematic element is played on like every other tv show and i think.... oh people are CRAZY crazy now. and not just crazy, they hate being uncomfortable, and dont like that jonno’s not in a traditionally white hetero romance that’s solely dressed in black in white in terms of morality and politics, like lois and clark are. and no, im not referring to the new anime where lois is racebent, this is not a factor in this convo. historically, and up until recently, the question of lois and clark has been and still is a deeply americentric approach at truth and justice, aka the american way. lois is the star reporter, the uncoverer of truths and part of the reason why justice gets served, but she does it the AMERICAN way, the way white people always have and always will find palatable. and that’s fine! these comics have a history. they have a pedigree, and ppl love them for a reason.

but jay doesn’t fit into that mold. he’s not even pretty to look at, in terms of conventional handsomeness, and that seems to be by design!

cuz it’s not just jay being brain smart that makes folks uncomfortable, but that he holds a Frame of Reference that even jon doesn’t really understand. his mom might be a military brat and his dad a refugee’s who’s DEEPLY assimilated into the land he was able to find refuge in, but jay is decidedly NOT assimilating. lord knows how many cops, armymen, and green lanterns we got running around, but jay’s not a lantern, and he’s certainly not US military. he’s the son of an ousted politician from an asian nation most ppl dont really care about. he’s got pedigree that’s decidedly NOT americentric. he’s NOT invested in truth and justice done the american way. he literally does everything unamerican, including seducing superman’s son, to make ends meet and make his revolution happen, and man oh man, that shit makes the intellectually conservative fandumb so damn UNCOMFORTABLE!!! his broke ass was able to bamboozle jon kent AND dick grayson! he went to take down a dictator the rest of the world saw as a hero! and superman joined him! and dick grayson funded the campaign!

First I have to Tensura lore dump at you so let's go

The world was created by Veldanava, the first of the True Dragons. He created for himself 3 canon siblings (Velgrynd, Velzard, and Veldora) and also Velvoid (who is the second youngest, with Veldora as the youngest). True Dragons are THE single strongest beings in Tensura. They have various elemental prowess and unique skills and are just insanely strong. They possess a dragon form and a humanoid form. So that's where Velvoid stands - exists from what is essentially the beginning of time and has been powerful the entire time.

At the same time, Veldanava created seven angels, which per cause and effect caused the creation of the Seven Primordial Demons, each of which was associated with a color. Diablo, or at that time Noir/Black, was the only one strong enough to fight and tie with Rouge (later Guy Crimson) who was ostensibly the leader. The primordial demons are...also insanely strong but not comparable to True Dragons by any means for several reasons which we don't need to get into. But Noir liked to fight, and once he tied with Rouge he was like damn. If I get stronger, all fighting will be really boring cause I'll just win. Lame shit. So Rouge got stronger and Noir just like fucked off for a really really long time. Demons can be summoned into the physical world with an offering so occasionally he goes to the physical world, but without a proper body they can't maintain that for very long.

Anyway my point is, they are both so fucking old and so fucking strong. And Diablo/Noir fucking LOVES to fight.

Oh, it's also important to note that Naming is a very important thing in Tensura that makes monsters stronger. So, Noir isn't really a name in that sense but more of...a moniker? It doesn't count.

So basically, at some point, Noir is like. I wanna fight a True Dragon. And he goads Velvoid into a fight. Velvoid takes it easy on him but still thoroughly kicks his ass. This happens often. He normally hates losing, but with Velvoid...he knew he didn't have a chance to begin with and it's so much fun.

I should note. Velvoid is practically a recluse. With power over Space and Void, they can create extra spatial dimensions at will, and their preference is Fuck Da World and hide it in a dimension with their hoard of random items from various collapsed civilizations, typically valuable or rare things a normal person would die to get their hands on. Watching the world and swooping in to scoop up anything of major interest is basically their modus operandi.

That being said, they are annoyed by Noir at first and think he's stupid and insane. Over time that opinion shifts, and instead of telling him to go lick his wounds elsewhere, they invite him into an extra spatial dimension to recoup. They offer him some of their own energy to recover under the ruse of, "it'll get you out of my hair faster" though it's clear there's significance behind it. Noir is beaming and delighted and he's a happy puppy demon fdkjsahfasjk

This just continues to happen after their fights, and Noir even starts to ask about the objects in their hoard, and they agree to tell him a story about one object per fight. He's very happy to get them talking more, and they're very happy to have someone to talk to who listens so intently and asks so many questions. He even occasionally has a relevant story of a time he was summoned to share (he is QUITE the story teller, he can go off forever).

Eventually one day he shows up to fight and somehow they end up kissing about it and ripping each others' clothes off and well stuff happens. It's new to both of them - they are spiritual life forms, they don't really reproduce like that (it seems they can if they want to though but that's a different tangent), and neither has had any such feelings before. They're also both demisexual or grey ace so it's like WOAH wtf is THIS but anyway it happens and it's a great time. And they just start referring to each other as partners but things continue mostly as they were except sometimes the fighting is fighting and sometimes the fighting is fucking- dfjsahfd and sometimes it's neither, it's cuddling and chatting about the things they've observed or experienced in the time they've been apart.

To them, "time they've been apart" is often centuries, by the way. LONG LIVED.

Also fun fact, Diablo fully brings them corpses or cool relics or whatever like a cat bringing it's owner a dead mouse and dead birds. And they fully praise him for it- dkjashfjkdas

Now this brings us to the more current timeline. Rimuru summons Noir (or well he tried to summon much weaker demons and Noir said no :) summon ME!!!! and showed up anyway fdjkahfs), Names him Diablo (thus granting him a new level of strength which is considered insane by basically everyone else), and Diablo becomes his second secretary fdkjafhsdj

Velvoid is only aware that Diablo has properly incarnated into a physical body but not because of who or why or how. They give him a chance to come greet them. He does not. And this brings us to a fic I need to post soon that I managed to write yesterday despite my hands. Point is, they show up, try to kick the shit out of him, find out he got Named, and want to kick the shit out of him even more.

So as far as dynamic in current times, the two of them are insufferable. Diablo LOVES to rile up Velvoid (this has always been true) as it means Velvoid will either attack him or put him in his place another way and he loves that. He also thinks their tsundereness is still precious and adorable even after all this time. He will also take literally every opportunity to gush about them and like this demon just goes. He does not shut up. He will keep going until someone forces him to shut up. Usually that person is an embarrassed Velvoid.

Velvoid does learn that Diablo doesn't like being called cute in front of other people, he gets all flustered and weird about it ("N-not in front of Lord Rimuru, please, Velvoid-") and they might use that to torment him a little bit. It's rare to be able to actually fluster him so they gotta, you know?

Behind closed doors (or perhaps inside of extra spatial dimensions) they're both quite cuddly and sweet. Diablo is a slut for praise and Velvoid will actually give it to him, and pet his hair while they do so and that sort of thing and he's just BEAMING he is the happiest puppy murder demon you've ever seen.

Also moments like Velvoid actually truly remarking that he's grown stronger, and truly expressing joy at him finding something that excites him and following that fully, and listening to him go off constantly (Rimuru is always shutting him up fdkjas). And Diablo more quietly and privately praising Velvoid and coaxing them into sharing their own stories and bringing them gifts from Tempest or wherever. Just. They show affection by bickering loudly and violently in public (Diabo is fully a masochist and a sadist) but also are sweet and cute in private (and sometimes a little in public).

Luckily, I rewatched this episode last night with my parter so it's fresh in ma brain.

Honestly, it was heartbreaking, and stressful and chaotic, and just a lot of emotions flying around. I think we really get to see WHY Carmy is how he is. With himself, with the restaurant, with his siblings, with Richie, with Claire!!!! Because this is what happens at Christmas time, imagine what a funeral where everyone is grieving and emotional and going through it, would look like. Cousin Michelle talked with him about essentially taking care of himself and avoiding these scenarios and I think Carmy took that advice, even though it wasn't going to be with her.

With Sugar, I just. My heart breaks. It was a great callout to why in S1 she was so upset that Carmy never asked her how she was. I think that Sugar asked it so much because, 1. She genuinely cared but 2. She wished someone would have asked her. All the things her mother said to her, and like again, this is ONE time. ONE night. Imagine growing up like this, imagine dealing with this day after day? Idk I just I feel like this really showed us why each person is the way they are.

And WITH THAT. I feel like that's why Richie loves this family so much. He doesn't really have anyone, we touched upon how his dad not being there and I think this found family moment is better for him than nothing at all. Seeing him and Tiffany together ... ugh MY HEART. I knew Richie had a sweet side in him since S1, I know he was rude and grouchy and all that but MY MANS WAS GRIEVING OKAY. He is trying. He is constantly trying. He cares about people and HIS people so deeply and I just... give this man a hug.

Mikey. Fucking. Berzatto. and also. Jon fucking Bernthal. and ALSO the fucking WRITING! The way I see the pain Mikey is feeling through his eyes his behavior, his hair even, the disheveledness. In S1, we see him clean shaven, and I'd have to think that was before this Christmas episode (who actually knows?) but you can see he is struggling. When Lee in the end said "you are nothing." I got this feeling, he didn't actually say it that many times. I think it just repeated and ricochetted off in his brain. The way the camera shot is just makes me think we're in Mikey's POV? Idk.

Ah, thank you, this is really flattering! I don't think I really do anything that special. Honestly, all it is was that I got misinterpreted a lot when I was younger and it made it difficult for me to express myself - so I ended up creating something of a system which I found seems to make things clear to others!

I can do a quick overview of it, for sure! I hope it helps! (It's under the cut :D)

Tip 1: Analyze things you love.

Look, this isn't school and I'm not a literary critic. I don't bother forcing myself to analyze things I'm just not feeling. Sometimes, I'll really enjoy something, but have nothing to say about it in particular. (Ex. Akutagawa. I adore him but for some reason don't feel compelled to analyze him as much... even though he's this blog's pfp...) That's not a commentary on the character/media nor my engagement with it. No need to analyze something you don't particularly care to - these write ups take a fair amount of time and effort, so you'll want to have enough raw energy at the start to sustain yourself. You should want to talk about it, is what I'm saying.

Tip 2: Understand the core themes of the story.

I cannot stress this enough! It's so important. The best stories will have their characters, plot arcs and settings all serve to enhance the major themes of the story in some way - figure out what these themes are, and keep them in the back of your mind. I think of themes like a filter - it should change the way you look at the story, and with any luck, draw a lot of seemingly loose threads together in interesting and surprising ways. There are typically about 2-3 major ones (Ex. BSD - living through uncertainty, good as a choice / Trigun - morality and autonomy, life after loss / Hatoful - love as salvation or corruption / there are other themes of course, these are just examples). From this point on, assume you have your "themes filter" active for completing the other tips.

Tip 3: Pick a small detail and think about "Why" and "How".

See, I used to go too big when doing analyses. I used to try and analyze everything there was to examine in one go, and it would become unwieldy and just have far too much information for me to juggle and process. So, it's better to start small. What's something that caught your attention? What was something you liked? Was there anything that confused you? Pick one thing... then ask yourself why and how. Why did I like this? Why did this character act in that way? How does this aspect of the story work? Etc. This will be your topic!

Tip 4: Read other people's thoughts.

I know we all hate going into tags and seeing some of the worst takes out there... so I don't actually do that. I only look through meta and theory tags, and most of those are done by people who put a lot of time and care into their theory crafting, so they at least usually bring the receipts. It always helps to read other's opinions. This is just a good thing in general - you need to open yourself up to different views. Even if you don't agree, you might be better able to articulate why you don't. There's some god-tier stuff in these theory tags, you just gotta look. :)

Tip 5: Pay attention to context and setting.

For most of the stories I analyze, the characters do not exist in a world or situation that is comparable to mine. Asking yourself "where did this character come from?" "what's the overall state of the world they inhabit?" "were this character's experiences different or similar to the rest of the cast? different or similar to their childhoods?" - this is really going to help you understand motivation, far more than core personality traits will alone. (Ex. remember that BSD is a newly post-war society. Tensions are still high. People are being hired at young ages. A lot of people grew up in the slums, and violence is common. How did the different characters interact with this world? What sides might one character have seen to this world that another didn't?)

Also, it's good to at least be somewhat aware of the author and the context they created their story in. Many of the works I analyze are from Japan. It's good to know where a work is from - typically you're going to see at least some expression of cultural values, and I find this is helpful to keep in mind. Some decisions made in story will make a lot more sense when you remember the story's place of origin.

Looking at author influences is also helpful! BSD has a great built-in source of background info, since the entire premise incorporates classic literature. This can be an excellent supplementary source!

Tip 6: Tell a story with your analysis.

Again, I'm doing this for fun. I'm not a literary academic, so I try to use conversational flow. I tend to write like I'm speaking - in fact, this is very much how I talk in real life. It's up to you the tone you set in your writing - just make it something that flows naturally. You can always go back and re-read it if something seems unclear.

What I mean by story is to break your analysis up into chunks. There's no hard and fast rule on how to do this. You can see a clear example of it in my "Dazai Likes People" post, which was long enough that I bolded the sections. It should have a beginning, middle, and end, roughly - beginning where you say what you want to analyze or lead into it somehow, middle (which I typically break up into individual topics), and the end, which honestly is just a rephrasing of the beginning (or sometimes I just leave it out). Sometimes, to break things up I'll add quotes or images that help me with my points; these serve as visual interest so the reader is not faced with a continuous wall of text. Bolding and italicizing key points can also do the trick.

A good way to see if the analysis flows is to see if you can say "so then..." between each paragraph. (Ex. Point 1 -> "so then..." -> Point 2 -> "so then..." -> Point 3, etc.) Each point should flow into the next - I try to make something of a narrative out of it. (It's why the word "so" pops up a lot in my analyses haha.) I'm sorry, I feel like this is the part that's the hardest to explain in a way that's easy to follow. It's mostly practice, really. It's also subjective how you want your analysis to read.

Tip 7: Fact check!

I hate spreading misinformation. Mostly because it's frustrating to have constructed a theory only to get called out that it's based on something misremembered, but also because, as a science student, I'm really mindful of keeping track of my sources. Always have your sources on hand! I spend at least three re-reads of my analyses consulting books, episodes, and manga to ensure that everything I've added is correct. (I might go a bit overboard with it sometimes... I can be a bit paranoid about this...)

And finally, my Golden Rule: ✨Explanation, not Justification!✨

If you have no other takeaway from this post, please remember this! Every character in the story should have their actions be explainable! This does not mean justifiable! Explanation is not just logic, and should always take into account character values, emotions, and situation. This will help prevent analyzing characters only from the perspective of relatability, and is very useful when analyzing antagonists/villains.

Character analysis is always about drawing a throughline between motivation and action. It's not about whether you would do the same, or whether you agree, or whether it is a choice you would forgive.

Everyone has their reasons for doing what they do. This is true in fiction, and it's also true in real life. I try to always keep this in mind.

Mariana came over today, he was here to pick you up, it was his week with you. I made sure you were all packed, of course, like a good dad. Definitely didn't forget to grab your favorite shirt or anything to stall you leaving, nothing like that.

Um, Mariana got here and he seemed a bit... strange. You know, walked in the door and shut it really quick, and just stayed there a second, ear almost pressed up against the door. You were so excited, you're always excited to see him, obviously you screamed out of happiness and tried to run up to him. But he shushed you. Like, hand over your mouth, he looked so serious too. I hope you weren't too scared. I hate that you have to be so scared.

Everything was quiet, I didn't hear anything outside. I tried asking what was up, but I got shushed too. Definitely kinda weird, I wouldn't ask questions though. I just grabbed you, pulling you away from the door; I didn't know what Mariana heard or if he was just playing some sick joke.

I started talking to you in a whisper, you know, letting you know everything was fine. And by god I would never lie to you, Flippa, because everything was fine. I promised then and I'll promise now. Everything's fine.

It was really cute, though, when you started talking back in a whisper, almost mimicking me. You're a little shit, you know that? It must've been from Mariana's side of the family, that bastard.

You were laughing though, so you weren't scared, and that's what matters. Mariana even joined in, the two of you were ganging up on me! You're both bastards! I can't believe the amount of betrayal from you both!

Right as you were laughing louder, Mariana stepped away from the door for a second, it didn't feel so dark for a split second. And we all heard a zombie's cry. It sounded so close, I swear I nearly shit myself. But we had to quiet your laughter, and what a moment of symbolism it was. Felt like I was in a goddamn story.

I hugged you close, you looked so scared, it happened so quick. But you were safe, and that's what matters. Mariana stayed by the door, ever the hero unlike me, sword drawn at the first sign of danger. You wanted to join him, but he held you back, pushing you towards the center of the floor, where I was sitting. He came to sit with us a minute later, sword dropping to the ground, arms wrapped around us, his family.

God we really can't have nice things, can we? I hope that, wherever you are, you're free to laugh as loud as you want.

sooooo my dad is a white man and my mom is an asian. they have 11 years age gap. recently i found out that my dad purposely go my mom’s country to find a wife and he was practically grooming her bcs he met her when she was 17 and married her when she turned 19. ntm she came from a poor family and an orphan.

throughout my life i never asked my parents about how they met because i was a very tomboy girl who doesn’t like romance thing. now that im older and somehow my fyp has this asian woman-white man discourse that will not go away.

realizing this make me feel sick tbh. i wanna hate my dad but at the same time he treated her so well and she loves him. i think he loves her more because she is so spoiled by him. i used to look at them and think that they are couple goals. but now i have this mixed sickening feeling.

i can’t talk to my dad about this but i’m harboring this resentment towards him. and i find myself hugging my mom more and crying. she has a very good life here. i know and i’m aware we have so many privileges. my mom did get her bachelor’s degree and got a job here.

my mom is so kind, so so so so smart, so beautiful and clever and absolutely the best person in the world. sometimes i wonder if she never got married young what would happen to her? i know she will be the coolest and most compassionate woman. i know she will have amazing career like marine biologist or something awesome.

i have the urge to protect her even though my dad is not threatening and kind actually. but i resent him for taking away her youth.

This is a really tough one isn’t it. I don’t think you can be angry at your mum’s imagined lost future, firstly. She was young but she made a choice that she has chosen to stick with all her life, she went to university, she got a job, she found her own way out of poverty, she had you - she’s happy. Yes she was very young, but also it seems like this has worked for them. If she hadn’t married him she might have actually been worse off. Sure she might have done something cooler but did she want to? If she was living in poverty and an orphan I am sure her youth and childhood was taken from her very early. She would probably have been forced to grow up very young.

I think you really need to talk to her about it. You’re angry at shadows and based on current internet discourse and not on real people and you’re not being fair to your mum because you’re deciding how to feel for her, as if she somehow can’t make her own decisions.

As for your dad: one of the tough bits about growing up is that we have to learn to accept our parents as humans. The way you’ve presented what he did is uncomfortable. You haven’t spoken to him about it and you’re holding it up against a 2023 conversation so I don’t know what exactly happened between them. 11 years is a lot. I think you need to talk to your mum, really listen to her, then at some point talk to your dad. But not like presenting him with a load of internet discourse. Listen to him and see him in his own context and story and as a person.

I used to fight with my dad based on online discourse about feminism etc and it was incredibly freeing to realise that he doesn’t have to keep up with that, that he’s lived most of his life and lived it as a good and kind man and if he’s not perfect that’s fine. I love him so much and I’m so sad I had those fights with him because they weren’t fair and they were coming from my own anxieties and anger about the world. I don’t want you to do that because I think you’ll regret it. I know you probably have a burning sense of injustice but you need to think about whether that’s more important than your family being happy together.

When people say families are tough this is what they mean. But I do really urge you not to judge your parents too quickly. Your dad loves you very much, what good will it do to be angry about something you don’t really know anything about? You’re just going to hurt him and probably put your mum in the middle and hurt her too. But don’t bury this anxiety either! Talk to your mum. Just be really honest with her that you worry about white men and Asian women and their story sounded like maybe she’d got married too young and will she tell you more about it. Get to know her as a friend as well as a mother as you get older.

she calls me names all the time. like all of the time. it’s not just annoying, it hurts. like a lot. she calls me things like a*hole and weirdo, jokingly. I always laugh though as a coping mechanism (no clue why??). me and my brother called her Karen when that was trending and she can’t get over it. telling her to get over it is not an option. last time I told her how I felt she got super angry and said “you have no right to tell me what to do” or something like that. I actually didn’t even tell her what to do, I asked a rhetorical question which effectively acts as a statement. anyways, it triggered an anxiety attack or something (?) idk. I didn’t have trouble breathing I was just very emotional and scared to the point where I was going to call the police because I thought she was going to hurt me (physically or verbally) and I wasn’t sure anybody in my house would help me or would be able to. she’s remarked multiple times that she could “really be crazy”. I locked myself in the bathroom for safety. I turned the light off to prolong her not knowing I was in there. I actually hid in the bathtub where you wouldn’t be able to tell if I was in there so if she unlocked the door from the outside she wouldn’t find me immediately. since we’re already here talking about things she’s done she’s also called me &my brother racial insults. whenever she’s mad she calls us the nword and it feels racially motivated. my siblings and I are all half black. she’s also technically half black but nobody would perceive her as such. she has white skin, we do not. that same day I got super scared and stuff my mom requested something from my brother. he said no because he has the right to do whatever he wants including say no. she got mad and somehow (most things are foggy from that night) we ended up driving to McDonalds to grab some food. she was speeding which also triggered me because I’ve been in a car accident before and even though it wasn’t a total wreck, it was still traumatic. speeding and slamming breaks is very triggering for me. my school bus driver recently slammed on brakes for no reason. she was trying to make a point that we should wear seatbelts, which, point taken but that triggered me so bad. I know it’s not really her problem but I was holding back tears. anyways sry for tangent back to the story. so we were on our way to McDonalds and she’s speeding. as she’s speeding she’s going on and on about how my brother is an nword hard r for saying no to her after “aLl ShEs DoNe FoR hIm”. she’s done nothing but abuse him and I only have sympathy for him. she does this all the time. you say no and she gets so mad. she’s diagnosed with bipolar something but I’m not sure exactly what. I don’t talk about it because I’m afraid of her reaction. I’m scared that I will literally die. my siblings are moving out. as selfish as this is, I won’t have anymore protection. I’ll be her therapist and her outlet for anger, frustration, everything. my other parent isn’t even an option for me. I would rather be homeless than live with him. Surprisingly, I don’t self harm. that actually makes me feel very invalid but I’m pretty sure daily verbal abuse is sufficient trauma. (any trauma is “sufficient“!)

HI i really enjoy your blog and the wide variety of interests and topics you talk about :') i'm also desi diaspora btw and i like hearing your perspective on diaspora issues too! i have a personal question if it's alright - pls ignore this ask if you don't wanna answer it, i would totally understand but - lately i've been hearing a lot abt making more private spaces unisex like public bathrooms etc, and i was wondering how u feel about this also considering your ethnic/religious background? like personally whether it's in past school sports teams or currently sharing my space with fellow med students where we often have to rapidly change scrubs and stuff i've never felt comfortable changing in front of male strangers etc, and while i know i'm naturally a reserved/introverted person i also know that the way i was raised and my family's traditions/culture has a lot to do with it lol... for this reason and also in general bc of all the stories i hear from back home abt femicide, r*pe, etc in south asia and west asia, i don't think i'd ever be completely comfortable with a man unless i knew him v well. but also i think most women even outside our ethnic bg feel similarly (like idk if u saw but recently there was this viral series of tweets where women said they'd rather encounter a bear in a forest than a man while they were isolated)... considering the number of stories of everyone from sports coaches to male doctors to male prison wardens assaulting their female patients, or how so many countries have epidemics of bathroom stall cameras and peeping toms, i can't help but feel that this wariness is justified. also the risk of hate crimes/violent assault is like a million times greater from men than women so idk if it would even be wise for gay, gnc, trans-identified ppl etc to share private spaces with them... so i'm struggling to unpack my feelings abt this and also i feel like girls and women shouldn't have to put aside our discomfort (that's been well-validated for so many millennia) idk... i was wondering if you felt similarly since from what i've seen u also come from a similar background as me? thank you!!

i don't mind answering! personally i'm also pretty self conscious about changing and used the bathroom stalls in school when it was time for gym class lol. but i think what we need to understand about an ideology or movement like this is that it's necessary to engage with it faithfully and materially. i think a lot of the reactionary attitude towards gender abolition tends to stem from the idea that abolition is an immediate conclusion and not a process that will take time and several steps to achieve. so it's not a movement that persists in ignorance of all of the issues you listed above but actually with an acute awareness of and desire to address them individually and collectively so that we can make it to a point where the conclusions of gender abolition become a reality. obv that will take a lot of time! but the point is to believe in and help curate that outcome no matter how long it takes to do so. and a lot of that will come down to deconstructing and restructuring how we as people are socialized from birth. men aren't born into misogyny, they're nurtured into it. and if we want women to be safer in the long term we need to invest in a future where we purge misogyny at the outset. which again! will certainly take a lot of time and an extensive effort from all walks of people (as well as require addressing multiple aspects and sectors of society beyond those immediately related to gender). but it's very important not to give into bioessentialism and believe that men are fundamentally incapable of co-existing safely with women. they very much can provided deliberate and extensive structural upheaval of gender politics as it exists today and that is what we need to focus on!
