(And it won’t be 18 months long — it’s just for the summer, we promise!)

We will return in September 2023, and will use the upcoming months to record fics and create a backlog, so you can expect more consistent posting from us when we return!

As we will be recording more fics, we will primarily focus on authors we haven’t featured yet, and we would like to ask those who are interested in having their fics recorded but who haven’t filled in our permission form to do so here.

I've been binging fanfic since posting started for this fest - something I would never be able to do, otherwise. Setting up this fest was inspired, and I also greatly appreciate the work and dedication that went into making it all come together.

Vagueblogging a little, but this sucks actually. Apologies for my disorganized thoughts. I’m not much of a writer.

I get that they were hurting, but I feel like they didn’t consider the people they collaborated with at all. I only lost one piece, but I know I’m not the only one. I had a podficcer tell me they were having panic attacks not knowing if they’d be asked to take down all their work podficcing this author, following this.

Like a heads up at least :/

I’ve been taking a few days to process this since I’ve had a lot else going on. Since I saw this, I have gotten a massage, watered my plants, touched some grass, pondered over my feelings a few separate times. It still sucks.

I love the Big Bang format, but I do feel like you encounter an attitude that the author’s work is the only component that matters sometimes.

I’ve had a lot of my art orphaned as authors pull their bang fics down, or fail to produce them at all — which, you know, is their right. My art was also posted separately on ao3 typically, and I don’t consider the effort wasted, because I love the process of collaboration, and I think it pushes me to make art in ways I wouldn’t think of myself.

But this is the first time I’ve had an author pull down something that, frankly, they were pretty minimally involved in. It contained a paragraph of their work, read by a podficcer, along with some animation (my first real go at animation in 10ish years! It was only six frames), some sound fx, etc.

I didn’t think we were pals or anything. I only worked with them the once, and I’m always cautious of putting an emotional burden on people that are getting a lot of attention, positive and negative, by acting like we’re friends. But I did enjoy working with them and thought there was some level of mutual respect as creators.

This piece is still on tumblr, and me and the other collaborators still have it where it was hosted from to post to ao3, but this was not a great thing to wake up to last week. It’s not that I was really attached to this piece, or even to the comments on the piece. For me it’s more the… social aspect I guess? Not so for everyone, I’ve had a few people tell me that this makes them want to never use the collaboration feature on ao3, if somebody could just hit “delete all” and never even consider the effect on the other co-authors. I love collaborating, and I don’t think I would do anything differently than what I did in the future.

It’s just still a little hurtful.

That all said, I hope they’re okay, or on the way to being okay.

Hi Hero! I am working on getting into voice acting and dealing with some transmasc voice dysphoria. HRT isn't an option for me, which is part of why I'm doing auditions and such for fiction podcasts to try to love my voice anyway. My question is, do you have any tips on gaining confidence in voice acting?

Oh, big hug, pal! Voice dysphoria is no joke. Recording yourself and getting used to hearing your own voice back can be a brilliant way to get more comfortable with how you sound!

Remember, there's nothing wrong with your voice - it's a transmasc voice, because you're a transmasc person. Medical transition is just one way to express one's identity - it doesn't make the identity itself. You're just as transmasc as you need to be, exactly as you are 💖

I know for me, just the act of listening to my voice every week really helped me internalise the fact that this is a non-binary voice - and was a non-binary voice before I went on T, and will be a non-binary voice throughout that transition. It's got to the point where, if people misgender me because of my voice, I genuinely am like ??? where tf did you get that idea ??? can't you hear I'm extremely cool and hot and trans of gender ??? who is this "Miss Owen" of which you speak ??? 😂

Auditioning for podcasts is a brilliant idea, but remember, there's a lot of rejection involved in auditioning and it can be tough.

You might have fun practicing on your own, recording yourself reading aloud and editing it into a little audiobook. If you're into fanfiction, podficcing is a really fun way to splash around in audio and get your voice out to a supportive audience. Or, of course, you can start your own podcast!

At the same time though, it's totally alright if you just keep those recordings to yourself. It's more about exposing yourself to your own, natural voice as much as possible, and learning the ropes, from how to set up your equipment to how to use your voice to best effect.

One big thing with voice acting is that you really have to dial your performance up to 11. Your audience has no other cues to go off except your voice - they can't see your beautiful subtle facial expressions or read your simple yet eloquent body language lol It's something you really have to do yourself to understand - you can feel like you're putting SO much energy into a performance in front of the mic, and then listen back and its the flattest, saddest thing you ever heard 😅

Pay attention to other voice actors and how they work. Listen carefully to how they use their breath, where they pause, where they run words together. Don't just passively enjoy the performance - try to really pay attention to what they're doing and what effect it's having. Then you can play with those ideas in your own performance, and see what works for you.

I think that word "play" is really important, too. Animals learn through play and humans are no different! You're going to get way further, way faster if you throw yourself into a fun little project that lights you up, and treat it as something you can play with and enjoy, than if you treat it like some great, ponderous task you have to get right first time.

In short, the best way to build confidence is to hang out with your voice as much as possible. Play around with it, reading aloud in silly voices, recording voice notes for your friends, mimicking actors you admire, etc. The more you hear yourself, the more you'll understand your voice. That'll help you learn how to use it and how to make it work for you, but more importantly, it'll help you to internalise the fact that this is your voice. It's yours, and you're trans, and that means your voice is trans too. No bells or whistles needed.

One of the best ways to make yourself happy is by seeing others experience such a beautiful feeling and I think that’s what I liked the most about his little drabble. They fit together so well and to read about a pure love, as simple as it sounds, is more than enough to make you happy – even more if you get yourself some chocolate!

There’s only a very few fanfics of Harry and Louis as an older couple, and I think this one really fits the established relationship trope, showing that even when the time keeps passing you can always keep falling in love with your first love.

The Moon’s Never Seen Me Before — @lovingstheantidote

Five moments that changed everything. Or, five times Louis left Harry speechless. Plus one time, he very much didn’t. Or, a Harry & Louis Gilmore Girls au.

This fic is a Gilmore Girls AU that captures the fun and sweetness of Luke and Lorelai’s relationship if Louis and Harry (respectively) walked in their shoes. It’s a wonderful treat to read.

Harry Potter Rec Fest Day 21 - Thought-provoking

@hprecfest - this prompt was itself very thought-provoking, it made me go back and think about the fics that made me close my Kindle and stare at a wall for a while. The fics I love best make me re-examine canon and rethink the things I knew about characters and situations, or even my own life.

The Audacity of Lavender Brown by @malpal132 Pairing: Lavender x Charlie Word count: 6,457 Rating: E

Canon did Lavender Brown dirty. I'm not sure who did her dirtier - JKR or the movies - but I really think she's unfortunately a one-dimensional plot device in a series of books already bereft of strong, admirable female characters. @malpal132 sets out to change this. This fic not only made me rethink Lavender in and out of canon, but female characters in general. Come for the feminism, stay for the sexy smut with Charlie Weasley.

Pop Up Pals by bambimoss Pairing: Draco x Harry Word count: 62,447 Rating: E

I love down-and-out Draco. I think it's a good impetus for a redemption arc and humanizes him for Harry and others who spent years villainizing him. This fic takes it to another level. I got literal stomach aches feeling so sorry and sad for Draco in this fic. As an introvert who doesn't love leaving the house but still experiences loneliness like all humans, I related to his "imaginary friends" and the embarrassment of having your lackluster (as judged by others) personal life outed. I don't want to spoil too much, because this fic is so small and heartbreaking and wonderful. You all need to experience it for yourselves.

Keep Your Eyes on Me by @ahhhnorealnamesallowed - a Podfic (Spotify) Pairing: Draco x Harry Word count: 2,786 Length: 17:55 Rating: T

How Harry became a tattoo artist. The descriptions of art in this fic are so beautiful; I can picture them clearly. The writing is efficient and minimalist but evokes so much emotion. I love this alternate journey for Harry - a way for him to work through some of his trauma.

A Gift of True Esteem by @teledild0nix - a Podfic (Spotify) Pairing: Draco x Harry Word count: 53,965 Length: 5:37:00 Rating: E

This is a personal one. I recorded this for the wonderful @teledild0nix at the request of their partner for an anniversary gift. Of course, I said yes! It's a sweet and thought-provoking fic: Hogwarts professors Drarry, educational reform, werewolves, actual queer representation, adorable magical pets. For me, the educational reform was the thought-provoking part, and Liddy does a great job laying out some of the problems with Hogwarts curriculum and then trying to fix it. I so enjoyed recording it, and even moreso the thought of @teledild0nix listening to it.

Mini-soapbox rant to hopefully make my post meta-thought-provoking: Liddy's partner asked me, when recording this, if they could compensate me for my work. I do some paid audiobook work in my free time, but this is fanfic, and I would have done this for free just because it's such a sweet thing for someone to do for a loved one.
