thinking this fine morning (afternoon) about a rebellion au where anakin never joins the Jedi Order and remains a slave & is sold off of Tatooine before his mother is freed by Cliegg. Sometime during the Clone Wars when he's like 22, a Jedi frees him and the handful of fellow slaves in the area by killing their master during a fire fight with Separatist forces - after the fight, the Jedi tosses Anakin the chip controller he'd found amongst the master's belongings while looking for information on Separatist movements. He says something, witty and kind, Anakin thinks, but Anakin can't remember it - couldn't hear it over the pounding of his heart at the prospect of his own freedom

so a year later, when the Jedi Order falls and the Empire rises up, Anakin just cannot believe that the Jedi were evil. He's not and never will be a Jedi fanatic or anything, but he remembers his Jedi, the one who freed him. He remembers his smile, his kindness, the swoop of hair falling over his sweaty forehead. The way he'd winked at Anakin as he left--the way he'd cut through the master's money safe with his lightsaber to reveal hoards of physical credits, up for the taking and enough for each slave to start a new life. no, his Jedi isn't evil and so Anakin is pretty sure that the Jedi Order was never evil either.

he's only had his freedom for a year or so. it's not been much of life up until then, and it feels like an easy decision to join the Rebellion. he wants something to fight for. he wants to do something meaningful with his life now that it's finally his.

fast forward ten years and he's fairly far up in the ranks of the Rebellion, considering how good of a pilot and mechanic he is. he's got a brain for strategy and he's got a massive amount of luck on his side. It's no wonder that when the Rebel leaders decide that they need the legendary General Obi-Wan Kenobi on their side and back in the game, they tap Anakin to go retrieve him.

Anakin goes. he's never met a Jedi before, apart from his Jedi, and even though this Kenobi guy sounds like a worn-out, retired, old-man Jedi, Anakin thinks it'll be a cool experience. also, orders are orders.

imagine his surprise when the coordinates he's given to find Obi-Wan Kenobi lead him to his home planet. imagine his surprise when he knocks on Obi-Wan Kenobi's door and the very familiar face of his Jedi opens it.

Earlier, to me, Shen Yuan being hell bent on believing Binghe to be manipulative and deceptive when they met in Jinlan City, was a result of his preconceived notions thanks to his PIDW knowledge. But, I do wonder, if a part of it was because, he himself has been lying all this time.

Ever since he transmigrated, he's been deceiving everyone. Partly because of the System and partly because he had decided even before dying that that'd be his plan of action if he ever transmigrated. To him, it had felt like the only sensible option. The only way to survive, to be accepted. But he can't fathom, that maybe, in some sense, that is also true for Luo Binghe.

When Luo Binghe met his shizun after the abyss, Shen Yuan read every emotion on his face as a calculated move. He believed Binghe's acting skills were so good, that he appeared genuine. Like Shen Yuan chose to lie and trick to survive, Binghe does the same for power and revenge. Shen Yuan may have consciously chosen this path but it was under duress. Luo Binghe, however, must be a mastermind for the exact same choices. That's how he was written, after all. How could the OP Protagonist ever be forced to act in a way he never wanted??? Impossible!

I wonder if, like Shen Jiu self-projected a beast onto Binghe, Shen Yuan self-projected a deceiver.

a little more serious answer: they can tell something is going on with optimus and they desperately want to pretend it's not. they don't want to know how he's aware of things he shouldn't be, how he knows stuff that should have long been forgotten, how he seems to be more familiar with them than he should be. how sometimes he speaks and it's like the dead are talking through him. how sometimes he will answer to empty air and somehow they can just tell what he's responding to. who he is talking to.

they Know. and they really, really want to pretend they don't.

they already carry the guilt of failing them once. the idea of doing it once more is unbearable and they'd rather deceive themselves than face it. they'd rather their friends stay dead and gone than think of them seeing what they've become.

"Nah," Danny replies, twirling his screwdriver in the air in what is probably meant to be an impressive trick to inspire confidence, except he fumbles it and it clangs to the floor loudly, "we good. If a younger version of myself hasn't come forward in time to stop me, how bad can it be?"

"Shouldn't it be the other way round?"

"What?"

"Normally, it's an older version of yourself going backwards in time to stop you, right?"

"Not in my experience."

Danny's grin is impossibly feral and a shiver runs up Tim's spine.

"This is definitely a bad idea."

Mad cackling can almost be heard a continent away and he can’t figure out whose it is: Morgoth’s, or his brother’s.

In either case, he knows the people Fëanor has just taken to the other side, Fingolfin’s dear nephews most of all, are in great danger. He knows his brother. And he knows what happens to the people around him when his passion meets rage in a merciless, all-consuming flame.

No one deserves to be in that line of fire.

So when his children and remaining nephews and niece cry out their betrayal and curse their uncle and cousins, he turns a firm eye to them.

“If I’d commanded it, would you not have done the same?”

They begin to shake their heads, and he frowns.

“Do not lie to me, children.”

They turn away. Fingon’s relief at his father’s words breaks his heart, his eldest should know he cares deeply for Fëanor’s sons. Surely? Has he become so distant? Would any of them have confided in him earlier if he’d just opened his arms a little more-

No use in what ifs.

He turns back to the burning ships and sends a small prayer to whoever might still listen to keep his nephews safe. Fëanor is gone, mind shattered with his father’s death, and he’s dragging his children down with him to ash and blood and ruin. They just have to survive long enough for Fingolfin to arrive. He’ll talk sense into his brother, he’s the only one who can. He’ll get the children their father back and fix all of this, pride be damned.

The Helcaraxë is the only option. His nine children spit venom at their half uncle, but no longer complain of their cousins. A year following him into this hellscape, a year of leaving the weakest to the blizzards lest everyone freeze yet refusing to turn back, has shown them exactly what they’d have done were the positions reversed.

It’s a sobering thought. He wonders what he’s done to deserve such dogged loyalty.

Wonders when he started taking advantage of the same things he hated and admired most about his brother.

Time passes. He wakes one day to a coldness in his fëa and sends another desperate prayer. A bad feeling takes route that grows day by day, fear and a strange fire dancing in his periphery urging him and his people on.

Time is running out Nolofinwë.

Ice slowly gives way to solid rock, then slush, then grass and he arrives at Mithrim in relief, all but running to the fortress, only to see little Makalaurë greeting his host. Eyes hardened, crowned in silver, heavy shoulders draped in a frayed red cloak-

And he knows it’s far, far too late.

Agony and despair are hidden behind a stony mask that he sees right through but can no longer reach. His open arms greeted with caution. Watching. Waiting for the other shoe to drop. His kind words with narrowed eyes, all but daring pity, and Fingolfin could weep.

There’s no reconciliation that can prove his love, his understanding, now.

Fëanor is gone.

His children are being consumed in the blaze left behind.

…and Fingolfin doesn’t know how to fix this.
