a church on Polish Hill
a church on Polish Hill
Thursday – photo by Mitch Waxman On the 28th of December, one had an errand to run. It’s seems that the ubiquitous ATM machines of a certain NYC based bank which my accounts are with are not so commonly found here in Pittsburgh. That meant that in order to avoid paying a fee when withdrawing some cash, I needed to drive for a bit in order to do so. I will crawl through broken glass to avoid…

As a fandom we do not utilize the fact Glen Powell is Polish enough since we’ve collectively decided that Ice is Polish. Here are my headcanons.
-Ice and Jake speaking Polish so they can talk shit about other people. Mostly Mav who tried to learn Polish when he and Ice started dating but failed.
-When Jake misses his family, (Glen says that he has good parents so I’m going to give him good parents.) Ice makes him come over for dinner where he makes traditional food.
-Or an alternative to the first is; while Jake was first crushing on Bradley he’d talk to his sister in Polish but Bradley knew what he was saying since Ice taught him. Bradley didn’t tell him and Jake found out two months into their relationship because Ice told him to do something in Polish and Bradley had to pick if he was more scared of an angry Jake or an angry Ice. (Ice is obviously a scarier option.)
-Jake is really into Eurovision and was absolutely livid when Jan wasn’t picked. (Because so was I.)
-Jake can handle his alcohol.
-He’s a terrible cook because the majority of Polish men do not cook.
-He played soccer as a kid and didn’t do any real work during the World Cup because Poland made it farther than usual and he was too invested.
-He loves pickles so much but forces Bradley to buy the expensive ones. (If you’re a pickle fan in America, I absolutely recommend Bubbies fyi.)
-He watched the movie Fanfik on Netflix and cried. (Super good, cheesy movie about a trans Polish teen and his partner. 10/10 I recommend.)
-Carol was also Polish so Bradley has some traditions he keeps going from her that Jake was really happy to participate in.

Jane of Lantern Hill, Chapter 4!
Jane’s mother is subtly (unintentionally?) reinforcing Grandmother’s brutal elitism. First, she asks, “Darling, is this Jody of yours a nice little girl?” and then she follows it up with, “But she looks so uncared for... positively dirty” ... just as if being ‘nice’ and ‘poor’ simultaneously is something impossible! Yet Robin cannot even see that her own daughter is uncared for, in some of the most important ways that matter. Jody and Jane are both getting the bare minimum, just on vastly different sides of the spectrum.
This teddy bear is feeling rather metaphoric of Jody herself... continuing the depiction of her fragile circumstances; that she’ll be tossed aside into the garbage pail once she’s all “worn out” too.
“You could feel the silence spreading through the room like a cold, smothering wave.” No, because I could feel the chill! Loved this line from Maud. The creeping dread! I’ve got goosebumps.
Jane’s getting all spicy (well, spicy for Jane, anyway) with her grandmother, and I’m totally living for it. And she’s NOT fair. Too true! Deeply appreciating that Jane’s growing a backbone, and that it’s coming to someone else’s defense that’s sparking its development. This is honestly what I would’ve expected/hoped to see happen with Robin. Perhaps she couldn’t stand up to her own mother for herself, but... when it’s your own child? Pick on someone your own size, Grandmother.
"I ain't riff-raff," said Jody. Man, this killed me. I just need a minute and a mop; my heart broke all over the floor.
“Jane had longed to get into the looking-glass as Alice did.” SO INTERESTING THAT, because what follows in the detailing of her “moon secret” and “moon sprees” is actual attestation that Jane did exactly what Alice did (dissociative episodes to remove you from your own reality). Jane, you also made it through the looking-glass!
