Why, yes, it's a random fic for another fandom. But i sure do feel a little better having found this random thing i forgot i started and finishing it up enough to post.

Apparently I'm celebrating this year's Pride month by reading queer Ranma 1/2 fanfiction. I've read 3,151,333 words of worth of fic this month so far on AO3.

It's interesting to see how the fandom has changed since the old days. I got into Ranma 1/2 back in the late 90s when I was a teenager. I was just as a voracious reader back then, maybe more so, and I read all the classics and standouts of the fandom. As the fandom slowly shrank and died out in 2000s, I naturally migrated to other, more active ones in search of fanfiction. Though I still kept a few fics and authors on my radar even as my interest drifted.

About two weeks ago, I got interested in poking around AO3 to see what I could find for Ranma, and oh my, did I find gold. A veritable feast of Ranma fic, and most of it was wonderfully queer.

Queer Ranma fic isn't by any stretch of the imagination new, but it is different these days. The language we use to describe gender identities has evolved. Back then if you read a fic labeled as Ranma-Chan, you knew you were getting into a work were Ranma is a girl. And Ranma-chan fics were common. But you hardly ever saw the term transgender. And if you did, it was almost exclusively in context of referring to Konatsu and not Ranma.

There were great heart wrenching character pieces, and deeply moving love stories, and side splitting comedies, and edge of seat action stories. But they were all written mostly in the 90s, and mostly by male anime fans. They are definitely products of their times.

The fics I found being written these days are different. And it's great. There is less bashing on characters in general. Even series designated punching bag Kuno often gets more nuanced characterization. Poly relationships aren't written as just harems for Ranma, and bi rep isn't limited to just fetishistic 'hot girl on girl action when the guy is busy elsewhere'. And the explorations of gender and sexual identities among the characters has been great.

As a transfem watching Ranma or any of the other characters explore their gender identity and break out of their egg, it's been a wonderfully fulfilling time to see these familiar thoughts and experiences reflected in fanfic for one of my favorite fandoms.

I don't really have a point to this post. I just took a minute to tally up my bookmarks on A03 and realized I've read over 3 million words in 2 weeks. And felt like rambling Ranma for a bit.

The real tragedy of Ranma 1/2 is it is the perfect transgender homosexual poly premise but because it was written in the late 80's and 90's in Japan it is almost (and sometimes literally) violently cis, het, and monogamous.

Rwby Ranma 1/2 au (plus my weird ideas at the bottom)

So I had this bits of idea posing as an fanfic idea for a bit and here what is basically. Certain Rwby characters fell into one of the spring at some point. I had other ideas but that would be at the end because my mind doesn’t go from 0 to 60, it goes from 0 to teleports behind you.

Jaune fell into the spring of the drowned girl (obviously, and thought him turning into a faunus girl because his mother was a faunus), Ruby fell into wolf, Weiss into Fox, Neptune into cat, Adam into the spring of the drowned child (because edgelord line coming from a child with never not be funny), and Penny into either the spring of drowned girl or boy (I wanted to have a trans Pinocchio and I’ll stick to it).

Qrow and Raven are cursed to turn into a crow and raven but learned how to transform back and forth from Ozpin where he teaches Jaune, Ruby, and Weiss to do the same.

Also Cardin does not recognize Jaune’s female form and thinks it’s a different person while having a crush of Jaune’s female form. Almost Everyone figures out but him. I did think of having Yang be cursed to turn into a guy and Sun into a girl to give Blake Bi-panic, but it would have been too many cursed people. There was also Jaune and Blake being betrothed to make it kinda like Ranma and Akane, but decided against it.

Now into the weird part because my mind is weird. You don’t have to use this, this is just what I wanted to do if I write it. Jaunes is cursed to turn into a female faunus, but later learns his female form is the reincarnation of the faunus god with powers over change and reacts accordingly (screaming for an hour and doesn’t know how to use it, accidentally turning Torchwhich in a faunus at the end of vol 1 before he knew and permanently turning Adam into a child with no memories of what happened before he was 5 at the fall of beacon). Zwei is accidentally turned into a real boy. Mercury forms a poly with Penny and Ruby and swaps sides. Adam wants to use Jaune’s power to turn everyone into a faunus. Cinder is a Yandere. Pyrrha survives but losses a leg. And Every ship is either a crack or rarepairing, except Renora.

Ranma hasn't been feeling right for as long as he can remember, and he just figured that's normal. But after Jusenkyo, and especially after Jusendo, the feeling of "wrongness" has been getting more and more noticeable... ...because he doesn't feel it in his cursed form. He continues to just cope, keeping his struggle to himself, until he finds a letter tucked into his old travel pack addressed to him, written by him, from a 48 hour period that he doesn't remember and nobody will talk to him about.

During the writing of 🔞 And at This Point I'm Afraid to Ask 🔞, [NOTE - Yeah, these two are being posted in "most recently updated" order, so the fic that came first is being posted tomorrow for this little calendar event -Helen] I realized I was speed-running Ranma's egg-to-hatched trans journey and made an author's note of that. In the comments for that work, I got a note bemoaning the fact that I didn't spend more time on Ranma's realization, coming out, and social transition as a woman while understanding my reasoning. I replied stating that I needed a good hook, something that hadn't been hammered to death by other authors, and at the time I didn't have anything. I really got it in my head that I should do something, so I posted to Tumblr and started putting it out to the universe that I was Poly Transwoman Author Seeking Story Inspiration and Motivation, in Open Relationship with current WIPs. I was scrolling through the "Ranma 1/2" tag this morning trying to find something I hadn't read when I bumped into Dear Diary by JaquiK. I've read it, of course, and it's short and, for what it sets out to do, good. "Feels like it needs more," says I, "Wish the author would continue it, make something more of it than they did." The little author that lives in my head rent free and looks remarkably like Ranma-chan ran up behind me and socked me in the back of my head, "Dummy! There's your plot hook!" Then she backed a dump truck up and dropped about 3/4 of a story's worth of ideas on me. [*le-gasp* It me! -Christy] With the 2023 holidays in full swing (it's Cyber Monday as I type this) I'm not sure how quickly I'll get to outlining this or getting chapters 2-5 out (my personal metric for whether the author is serious about a work is if they have 5 chapters out. This has been a solid rule of thumb for long-form fiction and hasn't failed me regardless of fandom), but I wanted to get at least chapter 1 out as quickly as possible. Tags will be added as I add more chapters, mostly because my writing process means I'm not sure what tags will apply until I'm writing something that necessitates them. 😋 I hope you enjoy it.

Obviously, at 6 chapters and 35.5k words, I've met my own personal metric for being serious about a work. 😉

This one is a particular pride and joy, and I hope that people reading it are getting the 'gag' of the title and the chapter titles. While not all the chapter titles are home runs, I have put a lot of thought into making them meaningful to the story as a whole. For example, the title itself, "Return to Recipient" is a play on the postal service standard, "Return to Sender" (and, yes, made a cultural signpost by that one song by Elvis). In the case of the "sender" of the letter that kicks the whole fic off in chapter 1 no longer exists. And, yes, I could have gone with the now-standard practice of making "that girl" an alt in the system known as Ranma, but that wasn't what this fic was about. This is about Ranma's transition as prompted by her own self demanding she be true unto. And that version was a result of a dissociative episode caused by injury and never properly treated, requiring Ranma's rapid healing (likely qi assisted) to repair the damage...and part of that damage was the entire mental state triggered by the injury. (And, again, the bigger questions of whether that was a separate entity that deserved a life to live are outside the scope of this fic...or is it? 😉) So if Ranma, theoretically, wanted to return the letter to the sender, she'd be returning it to...herself, the recipient. Therefor, "Return to Recipient."

Ready for some anything goes martial arts cosplay? Yeah, I'm gonna do a Ranma 1/2 project.

Not getting too nostalgic but it is time to do a cosplay from the first manga I ever bought with my money. That's right, I randomly picked up a copy of Ranma 1/2 at the bookstore, paying that $15.95 (corrected for inflation, $28.97) for the original first edition left-to-right formatted copies. A whole new generation of anime fans are being introduced to the Rumiko Takahashi manga now with the remake by Studio Mappa. Just like another 90s cosplay I did in 2023 I too can have some fun with this one as well. I could be very basic and go for the classic Ranma outfit. The red top with black pants and call it a day. But why would I make my life easy? This is a cosplay project it has to have to be a challenge to sew! The manga has such a diverse amount of outfits that are featured in it as well! I'm currently between two different outfits from the manga:

Which is so stinking cute with the light yellow apron and the ruffle headband! Interestingly, there is anime artwork with this with a different pattern here:

A quick breakdown for both of these outfits.

1.) Top - yellow short sleeve, red three-quarter length sleeve but same bias binding.

2.) Pants - length is the same, just past the knee. 3.) Apron - very much typical maid style with ruffles and fitted around the waist and chest with an A-line flare out 4.) Headband with ruffle Fabric - Since the outfits have drawn in details, there is no way I'm going to find a fabric that will match these, let alone be a close dupe. I am leaning towards drawing out the pattern and then printing it via Spoonflower so I can get my preferred fabric and match the pattern exactly.

Thankfully both sets of clothing have the black bias tape binding. Pattern -

This time, instead of drafting the pattern myself, I think I will try an established pattern for the top and the pants are gonna be very simple with a tie waist. I will go ahead and modify one of these two patterns to make the top so it falls around my hips.

I can already tell that the Cut/Sew pattern has some modifications/shortcuts with a zipper on the back instead of on the side seam under the armpit. It additionally puts the darts in for the bust horizontally while the Porcupine Patterns has vertical darts. However, I have worked with a Cut/Sew pattern previously and they give a very liberal range of sizes and maybe I don't always feel like tweaking it the way the other one will require. I can already see myself smooshing the patterns together since I'd prefer to use the vertical darts to make the shape. This will definitely require a mock up to make sure I get the fit of the top correct before dropping serious cash on the Spoonflower fabric. I'm leaning towards the Organic Cotton or Organic Cotton Sateen since it will have a slight sheen. I do want it to be breathable and not a sweaty mess. Even though they have a Satin, it is poly so that is a hard no.

I think the first step will be getting a pattern or two and moving onto that mock up stage!

I’ve been reading a lot of Tim/Kon lately since I’ve been in a batfam mood and Tim is my blorbo. Core 4 poly is also up there is good shit whether it’s platonic, queerplatonic, romantic, or sexual. It’s not right now but my other batfam ships are Tim+Cass siblings and Tim/Jason romo.

I just started Dunmeshi and yeah I can see why Farcille is good. This too is yuri.

Uhhh *does a quick backscroll through tumblr and my ao3 history* Luke+Leia is just *squeezes* so shaped. There’s a reason they’re both blorbos. Murderbot and Art are in no way romantic and I’m not sure I’d classify them as queerplatonic but god those two are just… look they’re very important to each other and are each others most important relationship but they’re both non-human sentients so it’s hits different in a very non-romo way.

B - A pairing–platonic, romantic or sexual–that you initially didn’t consider, but someone changed your mind.

I mean unless the show or story itself is pitching a ship I tend to need to be convinced. I’m very aroace-spectrum where unless the show is shoving the blorbos together (hello miraculous ladybug love square my beloved) I usually need fandom to hold my hand and explain why the blorbos go together. I think Ez may have sold me on Tristan/Teddy or at least taken it from “I think they’re neat” to “yes yes yes.” A lot of my strongly held shipping beliefs can trace back to someone in fandom going “I care a lot” and me going “hell yeah I’ll join you on this hill.” So yeah. I’m pretty easy to convince but I don’t always get there on my own just from canon itself.

G - Have you ever had an OTP? If so, do you remember your first one? Who was in it?

The answer is yeah of course I do, I love shipping. Live and let ship all the way. The problem is that while I believe in one ship above all others I also believe in both polyamory and the inherent joy of the fandom bicycle. So while I may fully believe in Stucky — for example — as soulmates, Steve is bicycle-blorbo shaped and thus I will ship him with anyone a fic or author makes a compelling argument for. Which undermines the whole “one true” part of OTP. Love to hold multiple conflicting OTPs in my heart and know them to all be true. Love even having OT3s.

As for my oldest? 🤔 I’ve been talking a bunch with the gc about Ranma 1/2 and how my gateway into fandom early on was Ranma+Sailor Moon. I’m pretty ship and let ship with SM but I do genuinely like and enjoy Usagi and Mamoru together even though I’m from a fandom tradition that paired Usagi with what seems like everyone else. I guess the early ship that I was like no these two belong together in a romo way and shouldn’t be separated or shipped with other people was Percy Jackson/Annabeth Chase. I’ll vibe with most Harry Potter ships except Drarry but I read HP and PJO at around the same time and was like no these two demigods are meant to be together, do not interfere.

Episode three taught me a few fun things!

1.) Ranma seems to spend a lot of time as a girl. Like YES there's the joke of him falling into that pond but from the pictures Nabiki has (despite them not living there long) implies that whenever Ranma falls in and doesn't have other plans she just. Hangs out with boobs. Good for her. Very Gender.

2.) Akane likes older men! Specifically Dr. Tofu. I have... no clue what his deal is whatsoever.

3.) Kuno is a poly king with a few masculinity issues he needs to work out in therapy.

Episode 1 of Ranma and I'm already hooked. I cannot think of a funnier premise then "Guy got cursed to be a girl, has only been genderfluid for two weeks, learns that the girl he just fought hated to lose to men, and IMMEDIATELY tries to think of a way to stay a girl around her to avoid hurting her feelings". Like that's it. That's a himbo with a heart of gold. I love her.

I don’t really ship Ryoga/Akane, but I love the idea of them as metamours to each other (Ranma is dating both of them but they aren’t dating each other)

I think Ryoga and Akane would be able to commiserate together about Ranma, and also act as mediators for each other as well. Ryoga could help Akane reel in her temper, and could help Ranma be more sensitive to Akane’s emotions. Akane could knock the boys heads together when they’re being dummies.
