Une énorme citrouille trône sur une table, entourée d'autres objets du quotidien: un parapluie, un journal, une allumette, une baguette de pain, un godillot et une lettre à l'adresse du peintre. Béante, se vidant de ses graines, la cucurbitacée a perdu une tranche, tombée sur le sol. Dans un espace simplifié, gris à l'exception de la plinthe orangée, chacun des objets est cerné d'un trait sombre. Rien ne les relie, ni leur nature, ni leur matière, à l'exception de leur rôle de figure dans cette composition très orchestrée. Jean Hélion, défenseur engagé de l'abstraction dans les années 1930, retourne en 1947 vers l'art figuratif. Ce virage étonnant est mal compris dans le climat de l'après- guerre qui voit l'émergence de l'abstraction comme un signe de libération. Cette nature morte illustre les préoccupations nouvelles du peintre ébloui devant l'or ruisselant de ce légume vulgaire.

An enormous pumpkin sits on a table surrounded by other everyday objects: an umbrella, a newspaper, a match, a baguette, a shoe, and a letter addressed to the painter. Gaping and emptying its seeds, the gourd has lost a slice, fallen to the floor. In a simplified space, grey except for the orange table, each of the objects are darkly outlined. Nothing connects them, not their nature nor material, except their roles in this highly orchestrated composition. Jean Hélion, a committed defender of abstraction in the 30s, returned in 1947 to figurative art. This surprising shift was poorly understood in the climate after the war, which saw the emergence of abstraction as a sign of liberation. This still life illustrates the new interests of the painter, dazzled by the gold steaming from this common vegetable. (Pictures and translation my own)
