In the age when corporations owning streaming services are showing their true colours beyond a shadow of a doubt, it's important more than ever that we focus our collective efforts on archiving art and overall human creations of all and any kinds, regardless of the value an individual person might place on them.

And the point of archiving is that it must be done without censorship. If we let a select group of people decide what kinds of art are worthy of preserving, and which are to be thrown away, to be lost forever, we will be setting ourselves up for failure as a society, and a civilisation at large.

If you censor what kinds of content are available to people, and only keep what you personally deem "appropriate", you're basically teaching others not to think for themselves, but instead to think just like you. That way you are contributing to raising generations upon generations of people with little to no critical thinking skills.

And the point is, if you do keep problematic or difficult works around, but give people the tools and the freedom to decide for themselves what they think about them and whether they want to interact with them based on their own judgement, you are helping people learn to think for themselves, which in today's day and age of countless types of information at our fingertips is truly a priceless skill.

So remember - you aren't the ultimate judge and executioner of art or culture. You can be a creator and spectator alike, just like everyone else. Your opinions aren't facts. So, don't act like they are.

Language -The Soul Of society

Language is merely, a medium of communication if we just go by its definition but if we think deeper then we will find that language is the piller which holds the structure of society and culture. It is what makes us more than just any other species of animals. We might argue that language as knowledge shouldn't be bound by any limit but there are some instances where we might feel the need to restrict the manipulation and interpretation of language because a particular language is the identity of the society where it originated. Any language, even if it is spoken by a vast population around the globe but its origin traces back to a small particular civilisation and the language is the intellectual property of that particuler civilisation. Language Is the key to unite people. For some part of the society in a country the dominance of their language in the governance system means they are somehows enipowered. Let me give you example of Sri Lankan Civil war which was fought between Tamil speaking Group of People and Sinhalese dominated Sri Lankan Government for 25 years or so and led to the death of approximately 80000 to 100000 people as per the report of United Nations. So many people died just for the recognition of their language. Why to think of example of Srilanka, even in our country we have linguistic division of states and territories as per the State Reorganisation Act, 1956. These two instances show the importance of the language for the existence of a society. Hopefully, now it is understood why the meaning of words shouldn't be misinterpsated and given different attribution as language glorifies the society it took birth from.Giving a different meaning would defame the language as well as offend the society. Oxford English Dictionary incorporates many words directly into English language from other languages but they don't keep their original meaning intact. They appended the word "Avatar' from Sanskrit language which genuinely means incarnation of god in physical form but in the current scenario it is used to depict the animated picture that represents a particular computer user rather than incarnation of prime Hindu gods such as 'Vishnu" or "Shiva'. Another such word is again a 'sanskrit' word 'Guru' which describes an individual with influential leadership, exceptional knowledge and deep thought of provoking intelligence but the Oxford limited its meaning just merely to a teacher or an expert of a particular subject.In view of the said examples one can see how the change in the meaning of words attenuated its value. for the ones unaware of the source language, here 'Sanskrit, may get befooled and may percieve the very word to be of English origin which at any cost, not acceptable. Misinterpreting the meaning of words can also offend its originating society if they used the word to depict something good but it is given a wrong meaning by others. This is an encroachment of intellectual property of the society or we can also define it as plagiarism of lexical world. It can also lead to conflict between two factions of society or nation.So, what conclusion be drawn here? There are many organisations which work to preserve languages and it's words to keep them intact and protect them such as 'Living Tongues Institute for Endangered Languages', etc. UNESCO plays a very important role in preserving languages too but that is not enough.There is a need of an international organisation i.e. acknowledged by all the nations of the world which will work only to protect and preserve languages, its words and their meanings in their original form. It will also check the misinterpretation of languages and stop it legally. Such an organisation will do a big favour to entire humanity by preserving its intellect in the form of languages.

XOCHIMILCO, Mexico — Mexican artisans are struggling to preserve the traditional manufacture of paper cut-out decorations long used in altars for the Day of the Dead.

Defying increasingly popular mass-production techniques, second-generation paper cutter Yuridia Torres Alfaro, 49, still makes her own stencils at her family’s workshop in Xochimilco, on the rural southern edge of Mexico City.

As she has since she was a child, Torres Alfaro punched stunningly sharp chisels into thick piles of tissue paper at her business, ‘Papel Picado Xochimilco.’

While others use longer-lasting plastic sheets, laser cutters or pre-made stencils, Torres Alfaro does each step by hand, as Mexican specialists have been doing for 200 years.

In 1988, her father, a retired schoolteacher, got a big order for sheets — which usually depict festive skeletons, skulls, grim reapers or Catrinas — to decorate city government offices.

“The business was born 34 years ago, we were very little then, and we started helping in getting the work done,” Torres Alfaro recalled.

Begun in the 1800s, experts say ‘papel picado’ using tissue paper is probably a continuation of a far older pre-Hispanic tradition of painting ceremonial figures on paper made of fig-bark sheets. Mexican artisans adopted imported tissue paper because it was cheap and thin enough so that, with sharp tools, extreme care and a lot of skill, dozens of sheets can be cut at the same time.

But the most important part is the stencil: its design designates the parts to be cut out, leaving an intricate, airy web of paper that is sometimes strung from building or across streets. More commonly, it is hung above Day of the Dead altars that Mexican families use to commemorate — and commune with — deceased relatives.

Traditionally, the bright colors of the paper had different meanings: Orange signified mourning, blue was for those who drowned, yellow was for the elderly deceased and green for those who died young.

But many Mexicans — who also use the decorations at other times of year, stringing them at roof-height along streets — now prefer to buy plastic, which lasts longer in the sun and the rain.

At 4 pm on the 21st of February, there will be a conference held at the Royal Palace in Palermo for discussing practical ways of preserving and practicing the Sicilia language. AUCLIS, a confederation of 18 Sicilian language organizations, is hosting it.

"Eighty-year-old Silvia Dan learnt her folk songs at her grandmother’s knee. Having spent her life caring for livestock on her smallholding in the Carpathian Mountains, she’s now starring on an album released in the UK.

Made by Romanian-born, Brighton-based artist Nico de Transilvania, the album – Interbeing – was recorded in the remote village of Nucsoara, where Dan is renowned for the pure beauty of her voice. A team of artists, videographers, photographers and musicians travelled to the village 180km north of Bucharest to record with Dan and local musicians on traditional Romanian flutes.

It is an area that is renowned for its old-growth forests which support lynx, wolves and bears, and is often described as the Amazon of Europe. Illegal logging has severely affected the region, so de Transilvania wanted to record the album as a way to use music to restore some of the damage. Every copy of the album sold will go towards planting native trees that are properly protected in law, in a project personally overseen by de Transilvania via her nonprofit Forests without Frontiers. So far the organisation has planted 150,000 trees over the last three years.

For Dan, whose grandmother wrote all her own folk songs, it feels right that they are now helping to restore the forests that inspired her.

“The album means a lot to me, it makes me proud that future generations will hear my ancestor’s songs – music and nature are embedded in our blood,” she said. “I am so happy that money raised will help to restore the landscape near my village – it has been devastating to see the destruction, and this project gives me hope.”"
