what did you use to make your animatic on youtube? i really love it and im trying to make my own animatic but im not sure what program to use to put it together :')

I probably used some not ideal stuff to make it tbh, and there's probably something much more streamlined, but basically i drew everything on procreate and then imported the layers into procreate dreams to make things move and timed it all out to the music.

Procreate dreams, at least in my personal experience, is not really the greatest program that definitely needs some quality of life updates, but it was serviceable enough for me to scrape by.

I'm unfortunately not by my tablet rn so I can't give an example of what I meant by drawing it all out on procreate, but to try and explain, I basically drew every single scar and grian on their own layers. That way I could move them individually of each other per shot.

(Edit: I actually had to do the same thing with text, so I could get the lyrics to show up on screen. I basically had a layer that was just for text. Where I would write out the word, import it into dreams, and then deleted the word in procreate so I could write out the next)

First question! What art program I use!

Mostly procreate, along with a handful of brushes! (Specifically the Jing Set and some custom stuff, which is really just a circle brush with the shape changed to a square.)

Second question! How do i draw so much!

Okay so. I am. Ahhah. Unemployed,,,,? No, I do freelance illustration, but hmm. A studio job would be nice.

i graduated college last year and I’m very used to eight hour art shifts. The body sort of remembers to keep working, even though I no longer have storyboards or visdev homework to do.

Also. The hyperfixation is a deep vast tunnel I STILL have not seen the end of the light to, good golly. (I have dreams now about the kids committing shenanigan crimes. I wake up in cold sweat and write them down in a journal. It’s like being the mouthpiece to an angry god.)

So the overall gist is: I was trained to be a storyboard artist with a visdev background, and I’m using that higher education to draw funny muppets because my brain’s funny.

I also DO have a queue, and I’ve been treating this as a sort of inktober project. I am definitely going to slow down soon though! Maybe. Hopefully. Ah… (sheepishly drops my kofi here)

Third question! How do i color!

I. I, uh. I dont know man the coloring demons have a grip on my soul and i just go along for the ride. But also, if it helps, i prefer to limit my pallets to only a few colors at a time. Lighting is king, so if you can figure out if you want to focus on either on your lights or shadows, you’ll have a much easier time composing. That, and symbolic colors— idk, something hits different about art drenched in gold with a tiny hint of a man staring into the blinding horizon, or a green leafy environment with a single dot of artificial red. I also like using blue and purple for shadows, and I’m a big fan of muting colors with only one or two that pop— one of the reasons why I was so attracted to submas in the first place is because from a design aesthetic, they’re both super funny muppet men AND really cool train guys that have a limited pallet and thematic apparel.

This goes out to a BUNCH of people who sent me inbox queries— sorry for not responding, it’s a tad overwhelming because some of them are story questions even I don’t really know will go yet, and others are words of praise and I’m selfish and like scrolling through the inbox to look at them when I feel down. I am more of an artist who sits in the corner and sprouts like a potato rather then a branching vine who socializes, but I really do see people’s responses and they make me go :)))))

i am foaming at the mouth waiting for more of the aeldari/diplomat fic. the way you write the alien perspective is So! Good!!! please tell me you have more writing/headcanons for the xenos factions, i love those silly space elves and space robots!!

i will be working on my next taleath/diplomat fic soon, but here are some headcanons to tide you over because GW neglects Eldar and half the fandom just boils them down to pointy-eared waifus rather than truly alien creatures, which bugs me. these are all 100% my own invention and based on nothing but my own perception of what would be cool.

Random thoughts on Aeldari culture:

since the vast majority of Craftworld Eldar live lives of carefully curated experience in order to avoid succumbing to their degeneracy of their past, it stands to reason that sex is a Big Deal for them. Romantic relationships between Aeldari can take decades to form — sometimes centuries can pass before a couple so much as hold hands. Even when things are moving relatively swiftly by Aeldari standards, there will be months of meditating beside each other, ensuring that they can stand to be in each other’s presence without losing their grip on their feelings. It’s very common for older Aeldari to serve as chaperones for young would-be lovers; they are tasked with ensuring things do not get too intense. When the pair do have sex, it is often intensely ritualistic. Since Aeldari are so psychically gifted, they need layers of protection and care to ensure they don’t give half their Craftworld a really awkward dream. No one wants to have a vision of their brother getting backshots for the first time.

Exodite Eldar - the ones that ride dinosaurs and haven’t had a lore update since about 2005 - view sex very differently. It is a gift from their mother planet, and meant to be enjoyed. They do not casually procreate, but this is because they believe it is their duty to raise strong children to benefit the collective. Arranged marriages are common, but always done with the consent of the children involved (the children in question are generally about two hundred years old — the Craftworld Aeldari think this is appallingly young). The fertile Aeldari are encouraged to procreate as much as possible, and families of ten or more children are common. Since the Fall, infertility is very common among both males and females, so those that cannot bear their own young will work to raise the young of those who can, freeing them up for more frequent pregnancies (since Aeldari children taken at least three decades to reach what we would consider prepubescence, the help is much needed).

Since Yvraine’s big song and dance about Ynnead, more and more Drukhari are defecting — some directly to Yvraine, some to the Craftworlds. Obviously, there are all sorts of problems with integration — including detoxing from literal soul addiction — but one of the more mundane ones is sexual frustration. Imagine going from shagging every time you feel like it to being told that even looking lustfully at another Eldar is considered a grave breach of protocol. Taleath has spent more time than he will ever admit meditating away a boner.

And the more NSFW stuff:

Yes, they have dicks. They look very human in that respect. Never mention this to them, because they will not appreciate it.

Most Aeldari will tell you that they could never look lustfully upon a human, as this would be equivalent to you looking lustfully upon an ape. You are utterly beneath them — you barely qualify as sentient to them — and sex with you would qualify as bestiality to them.

Most Drukhari will tell you that Craftworld Aeldari are filthy liars with a stick so far up their arse it’s a wonder they manage to get anything done. Yes, humans are totally beneath Aeldari — they’re mewling, miserable creatures with short pathetic lives and nothing to redeem them apart from how delicious they are when they die screaming. Or, even better, fail to die, and just scream and wail for mercy and — wait, what were you asking again?

Basically, Drukhari will fuck humans — not all Drukhari, not all humans, and we are going to have to play fast and loose with the definition of ‘fuck’ because a lot of the stuff that happens in Commoragh defies even my attempts at description.

Aeldari will not, in general, fuck humans. This does not mean that some do not want to. They just cannot acknowledge it without going against the deeply held taboos of their culture. The fact is that they will say it is because humans are disgusting and completely beneath them — which is, from their point of view, largely true — but that is an effective shield against the actual answer, which is deeper and more complicated than anything they really want to admit to outsiders: that the Fall warped every aspect of Aeldari society, including sex. The rituals they have prior to building a relationship, let alone prior to sex, are so intricate and long that a human could well age and die before the Aeldari even feels ready to admit their feelings. It just isn’t worth it.

BONUS: How to Tell If An Aeldari Is Crushing On You

Aeldari are creatures of bizarre mannerisms and a culture so alien that it makes the orcs look familiar. However, here are some signs to watch out for if you think that your Aeldari is harbouring some heretical feelings:

They occasionally refer to you by name instead of ‘Mon-Keigh’. (Note: if they start fondly referring to you as ‘little pet’ or ‘little prey thing’ I would advise reading up on your life insurance policy as this is not an Aeldari, this is a Drukhari, and only the Emperor’s Mercy can help you now)

You keep bumping into them. Normally you will walk into what you thought was a perfectly empty room, only to find them meditating. They will normally sigh, and declare something about not being able to be free of your pestilential species, and make to swan off. If you apologise profusely, they may graciously permit you to join them. This is the Aeldari equivalent of a blow job in church, so be try and be good.

They loudly state how annoying and loud all these humans are. Aeldari do not normally need to say this out loud; it’s a given. If they are saying it, they are trying to remind themselves of the fact they are meant to dislike you.

They mastermind a plot to save you from a minor inconvenience that leaves thousands of your kin dead or dying. They do not understand why you are upset at this. The others are just humans, yes? You are their human. That is the difference. (Contrary to what you might think, this is not a purely Drukhari trait. This is something all types of Aeldari will do. The only difference is that a Drukhari will try and fuck you after doing it, possibly as you cry out of guilt, and an Aeldari will try to hold you hand, which is their version of fucking)

So, since my laptop is being a pain to me to update (i cant play roblox on my ipad anymore its either procreate or roblox and i kinda need procreate more) i took the chance to pick up again my old wacom intuos. This was the first test on Mspaint:

Its ehh...mid, since theres no stabilizer and my hands are shaky (thanks neurologist who gave me schizophrenia pills for sleeping) it doesn't look that good, I had to learn how to blend with the brushes that it provides.

But i took it personally and pulled out this in a much bigger scale on the same canvas (no layers unfortunately lmao, unless u count the eraser trick as a second layer)

He's so pretty ngl i love this. I even did a better blending than with fresh, of course, the camera just doesnt do it enough justice.

I'm relatively new to Procreate as well, but you'll get the hang of it in no time! The main thing you need to know is that Procreate is a raster-based program, not vector-based. I won't go into the nitty gritty of that; raster just means that once you start drawing, what you see is what you get. You won't be able to make it bigger or smaller without damaging the art.

So because of that, you need to get all your preferences set up before you start drawing. You want your canvas to be a large size and you may even want a higher resolution. You'll have to experiment, but I do most of my drawings at 2400x1500 in size and I draw in anywhere from 150 DPI to 300 DPI. You don't need 300 DPI if you're just making casual art for online use only :) Here's a video showing how to change these settings. And here's an image where you can find the canvas tools:

Now you can start drawing and it shouldn't be blurry!

When you're ready to share it, I recommend exporting it as a PNG. PNGs are much better at preserving the quality of your art instead of JPGs. Here's where you can find that:

Don't feel discouraged. It took me years of practicing and experimenting and looking up tutorials when I first switched from traditional art to digital art. But these tips should help you significantly!

I've gotten a good amount of repeat questions the past few years and thought I'd make an FAQ. No need to RB or anything, this is going to go in my pinned post!

I still always happily will take questions, this is just for folks who might want to just find the answer without going through the extra effort. These are mostly about art and TTRPGs :)

ART STUFF

Can I crosspost your art to other sites?

Yes, as long as credit is given to me in some way!

What brushes/programs/hardware do you use?

Almost all of my regularly used brushes come from either Retro Supply or True Grit Texture Supply! I'm not sponsored or affiliated, just really like the quality of their products. They have sales fairly frequently and I've never had any complaints. I also use quite a few products by Ittai Manero.

Right now I primarily work in Procreate on an iPad Pro. Procreate is my favorite art program and I'm quietly hoping they eventually make a desktop version.

I very recently also got an XPPen Deco 01 V2. Partially because there's some art programs on desktop I want to learn (Aseprite, Blender) or programs that have superior desktop versions as compared to mobile (ClipStudio). I'm also teaching some grade-schoolers digital art and wanted to have the same kind of tablet as them (I haven't used a screenless tablet for over half a decade). As of right now I'm very happy with it! For the price it's an easy recommendation.

I mainly use ClipStudio in this instance, and the brushes linked above both also support the program (aside from Manero). However there's a huge user-base that upload free assets constantly that makes ClipStudio so great. I especially like painting in it for some reason!

What's your opinion on AI art?

I don't like it, obviously, but I get how people who lack the context and education on why it's bad wouldn't get it. I also think that some other artists fearmonger a little too hard regarding it and it has the unintended effect of making the situation and it's nuances even harder to understand. I talked about it here.

Did you go to art school? Would you recommend it?

I did, I have a BFA in illustration and graduated from CCAD in 2018. Every art school is unique and my experience with art school and the benefit it gave me is VERY different from how I believe it may be for others. As of right now I think there's a lot of good cheaper online resources than private art education in general. I did have a wonderful time there though, and it's availability helped me eventually escape a domestic abuse situation - so my feelings are a bit complicated.

Do you have a dream art job?

I'd love to be a college-level art teacher. Funny I know, considering I just said art school isn't always worth it. I just deeply enjoy the craft and discussion surrounding art in general. I'm tempted to make art videos one day to scratch that itch.

What's your favorite/least favorite part of the drawing process?

I hate sitting down and getting the sketch started (hello ADHD...) And flatting. Linework/sketch cleanup and finishing details for color are where it's at for me.

What made you interested in art?

My grandfather was a painter, sculptor, and stained glass maker. He will always be one of my biggest inspirations. In terms of media, there's a ton - but I started internalizing art as a skill after seeing the Shivering Isles DLC concept art by Adam Adamowicz. I started appreciating how art can be weird and beautiful and whatever you want after reading Evan Dahm's Rice Boy (and the rest of his work). I also had a particularly beautiful book cover for A Wrinkle in Time by Leo and Diane Dillon when I was little and their art rewired my brain chemistry. At the time I said Adamowicz was my most impactful inspiration but on reflection I really do think it's the Dillons. I talked a little about it here.

TTRPG/DND STUFF

What system is your DnD game running?

I'm running my game using a modified 5e ruleset. 5e happened to just be the first TTRPG system I learned and I also really enjoy Forgotten Realms as a setting - though I take extensive liberties with both. I'll probably be moving away from WoTC's products and the system after this campaign, though. I already change lore so much the setting has a lot of differences.

What materials do you use in your DnD game? Do you play online or in person?

As much as I'd adore to get to play IRL with my friends at some point, our game is currently online. For our current campaign I recently made the switch from Roll20 to Foundry VTT. If you're an online exclusive DM and have the money to buy the one time license, I would recommend it!

I am not looking for players! Our game is also not recorded or streamed - mostly because I'd get some serious DM stage-fright. I also like it being a relaxing experience for myself and my friends where we're performing for ourselves, instead of with the pressure of a potential audience.

However, I do have a toyhou.se world where information on the game is available - including session recaps! If I ever get the time I also want to draw fun comics and little animations of what happens because my friends are very inspiring to me and DMing has quickly become a favorite hobby.

Can I use your art/assets/ideas in my own game?

I can't really stop you. If it's not recorded, streamed or monetized and you're not saying you created anything I made yourself, I legitimately don't care! This even includes using character art I've made. I just would like to politely request you don't post any of it publicly to avoid confusion and to respect my players - many of the NPCs in my games are also characters they create and I cannot give permission for them (obviously). It also would kind of suck to see one of my own beloved characters supposedly "belonging" to someone else.

Essentially, I understand taking inspiration and having "placeholder" images/artwork for characters in a game. Not all of us have time or resources to have custom art! Just don't take one of my or my players' OC's designs and start saying they're yours publicly , pretty please :)

Once commissions are over and I find the spare time, I intend to release free-to-use (personally and for streaming) art packs for folks' games. I also highly recommend the patreons I linked above.

Writing/Art Update 6.18.2024

I'm so sorry. I'm soooooo sorrrrrrrryyyyyyy.

It is June. School is out and the children are here. I am not good at writing in this conditions. It's not that I'm too busy, it's just that I get interrupted a lot and also, I can only write when my brain has a lot of alone time. I know this. I planned extensively that I was not going to have any goals for the summer because last summer was so frustrating and I still feel so, so, soooooo baaaaaad for not managing to write anything.

I put aside the thing I was having trouble with last week, and started writing a thing that I've wanted to write forever that baaaaaarely fits one of my prompts and I've written 2k words on it, but, like, 1 sentence at a time. It's got multiple [fill this in later] parts AND I'm not sure how to end it, and anytime I try to think about it, it just sliiiiides off my brain.

I have about 7 WIPs I want to work on (none of which are my requests) but I think that if I actually tried to write them, I would just stare blankly into space, the way I have stared blankly into space for the last two things I have tried to work on. I feel super duper bad because people sent me so many nice prompts and my brain is just too smooth to work on them. I know that me feeling bad about it doesn't help anything and that no one wants me to feel bad, but unfortunately, the feeling bad is obligatory.

A thing that did not help was that Mr P and I have spent the last two weeks d e v o u r i n g the Imperial Radch series and so all I want to think about is my favorite extremely problematic sci-fi military-empire complex instead of my favorite extremely problematic anime military-empire complex. (I think Old Man Yams and Anaander Mianaai:Vaguely Remorseful Edition would be besties). I finished the third one yesterday and I am holding myself back from reading them all again, immediately.

Every day I draw lieutenants. I have actually drawn all of the lieutenants at this point, but I think I want to re-draw Hinamori, because she was the second one I drew and isn't quite as good as the later ones. It's all just sketches and I am currently waffling on how much clean-up I want to do on this. One of the wolves inside of me wants to just leave them as they are, it was just a practice project. The other wolf says, you did all this work, would it be that terrible to do 10% more work to make it actually look good? (aka do an inking layer). It's also done on a very wide canvas and I need to figure out how to make a pan animation. I mean, I know how to do it in a very crude, manual way, but I feel like there must be a better solution (at least, a better solution that is not shelling out $20 for Procreate Dreams, which to be fair, is very cheap for an animation program and I am sure I would enjoy it). ANYWAY! Hopefully I will be done with that project this week!

I also made some bad cookies today. I am very bad at making cookies, but Lil P wanted to, so we did. They taste okay, but they are among the ugliest cookies I have ever made in my whole life.

I will try to be better next week!

i actually used procreate dreams for that animation!! it’s alright for back to back frame animations but Oh Boy is it hard to manipulate when you want to move around certain frames or to have them last longer when synchronizing them with audio. somehow procreate’s animation option (not procreate dreams) is easier to handle ??? bc Somehow dreams doesn’t have basic stuff like a lasso tool???? and if you want to move a pack of frames you need to group them and Then ungroup them if you want to tweak them individually?????? it’s got potential but man you can tell it’s still pretty new and is in need of lots of updates…

but yeah if i had to recommend softwares i’d say procreate (the regular app not dreams lol). iirc it’s only 10€? but even flipaclip is good for animatics so if you’re not sure abt spending money on procreate then there’s always this! tho imo any drawing software works for animatics as long as you’ll have an editing app/software.

for editing the easiest recommendation is capcut!! super easy to use and has a lot of good stuff for a free app (there’s a premium version but honestly it’s not necessary at all) - the app adds a small « made using capcut » clip but i’ve had no problem removing it directly in my phone album so no worries in that:)

ive also heard good stuff about Fable as a good substitute for After Effects (same with Pencil2D for ToonBoom/TVPaint!!!)

i know the reason why procreate's updates have slowed a bit because they r too busy tending to procreate dreams (new baby sibling hwo sucks) because even that service ended up being a rush job that still hasnt seen some qol features (apparently selection and transform aren't on the app? WTF!)

i truly got nothing better to do bc the thing that has been making me so angry lately is scrolling through procreate's feature suggesstion forums. the most basic features that procreate is still lacking will be suggested in a thread and it's either marked by the staff as "not planned" or a member of the procreate team is like "this is really interesting! we will look into implementing this in the future" and then you notice it was posted six years ago

Part 1

I am going to start a new 6 second animation, and since I know working with Dreams has been frustrating for some people, I thought this time we could go through it step by step. I’ll be posting updates as we proceed through it from start to finish!

Before we begin there’s a couple things I need to elaborate on. For starters I am not going to do everything in Dreams. I’ve made it very clear numerous times that I regard Dreams as a tool to composite all the elements together on a timeline, not as an animation app to draw in. I’ll be working primarily in Procreate to do the animation part, and we’ll move on to Dreams closer to the end. In this way I hope to help show the animation pipeline that I think works best in Procreate and Dream’s favor.

Every animation needs a baseline to work from. So I found a 6 second audio clip from Minecraft Story Mode Season 2 that featured Petra saving Jessie from a creeper. It sounds dynamic, I like the voice actress, it’s short, and I think it will look really cute when I finish it. Plus I just like Minecraft.

Every animation also needs baseline rules to work from too. I’ll be doing my animation in 24fps, because that’s the industry standard. My screen resolution will be 1920 x 1080. These are the basic settings I usually work from.

The next step for me is to time out the dialogue and sound effects on a dope sheet. I’ll go more into that when I get there.

And lastly I need an art style for the project to pull from. It would be maddening to try and hand draw blocky characters with pixel art faces, so I’m gonna try to emulate someone else’s art style for this project. When you work in 2D animation you have to be able to adjust your art style for whatever project you’re working on. Being artistically flexible is important!

So that’s where we’ll begin! I’ll keep you all updated as I proceed!
