If accommodations no longer help you, I'm curious at what point they stopped being helpful.

#bc for me: once u get to the graduate level its like sink or swim bitch #u have to fucking read and nothing is gonna make it easier so fucking read or find a different job #i dont kno how u accomodate a grad student. like u have things that have to happen. u cant just let someone not do their job they got hired #to do. so like u just select for ppl who arent extremely disabled bc i just dont think u could do it otherwise #u would b too bad at ur job. every prof i say im dyslexic to is like: oh! r u registered with the disability office?#and im like no. wtf would they even do for me. im sure i could get lots of accommodation stuff but functionally i just have to suck it up #and work harder. but im also fucked up about having a learning disability so like maybe im just being difficult #idk. most ppl dont wanna do jobs that they weren't designed for and cause them so much pain. but like i said. im sorta fucked up #learning disability #dyslexia #dyscalculia #adhd #dyspraxia #dysgraphia #poll #polls #unrelated

on the one hand, i am very much a proponent of the "first draft doesn't have to be good, it just has to exist" strategy for writing but on the other hand i'm working on the second draft now and i am Suffering

#writing #writers #grad school #college #student #this is about my MA thesis but it applies to fiction too #also if you're an undergrad reading this i am telling you as a TA: edit your papers. i know it sucks but it helps so much i promise #if you only have time to edit one part it should be the intro #there should be a sentence in there you can stick “i will argue that” in front of and if there isn't you need to add one #this is your thesis statement and even if it's not the best the fact that you have one at all will make your profs and TAs very happy #i just finished marking papers sorry for the tag lecture

just so you guys know, i am killing it at this conference

#i absolutely crushed my talk #like multiple people caught me after the session ended and said it was great #and in the coffee break two seperate grad students came over and asked me questions about my work #and i knew how to answer the questions!!!!#AND a collaborator asst prof offered me a postdoc position i. her group next year which is in a red state and she’s a new prof #but interesting work and i would have a huge amount of freedom so im definitely thinking about it #and the program manager of my section said i should resubmit my proposal and essentially told me that it would get funded next time #so niiiiiice i’m crushing it

I could/should elaborate when I’m not falling asleep as I am rn but like. I feel like for the people who you “mourn” who have died young and/or suddenly who you knew only in passing, or only casually interacted with, or were once close to but in the years between then and their death you barely spoke, etc etc etc, you arent actually mourning them or their presence in ur life (and now palpable absence) (supposedly) but just what it means to be a human on earth who has to grapple with inevitable loss and the immense weight of what a Person is and their footprint on everyone they interact with that is fleeting even tho there are several billions of us on the floating rock but none of those billions of lifetimes are ever overlapping 100%…. sigh :/

#context a student who graduated last semester (undergrad) died in a car crash like 500 miles away #and one of my fellow grad students/TAs and a few of his former profs are so upset about it and like………#u barely knew this kid I mean of course I feel terrible that someone with his life ahead of him was snuffed out in the blink of an eye #but like…….. if u had never found out about this. or if this hadn’t happened and he went on to live a boring long life #he would mean next to nothing to u !!! u would be none the wiser! u would probz not even recognize his name in 10 years! why are u crying!!!#idk I would be less ANNOYED and hashtag BOTHERED by it if the same people didnt say such nasty derogatory shit about their undergrads #like every other time I talk to u about mundane news ur complaining about how ur students are all lazy untalented idiots #but now THIS ONE who was never meaningful to u before THIS GUY is SPECIAL to u…? u mourn him?#2 weeks ago if I showed u his student ID photo u would struggle to remember his name but NOW HE MEANS SOMETHING #NOW THAT HES GONE AND IT DOESNT FUCKING MATTER ANYMORE NOW HE MEANS SOMETHING TO YOU #tldr if ur still reading lmao I feel like this stuff is always about yourself and almost never about the dead person #which is valid in its own way I mean I’ve literally cried after passing mangled cars and ambulances with people who defs aren’t gonna surviv #but it’s never been about their life’s overlap with mine and retconning some kind of memorable or emotional significance to it #idk why I’m so emotional about this in like 3 separate directions but it’s just so fucking frustrating !!!!!!! 🥲🤡

#ah yes. my old friend: getting nothing done all day bc im too paralyzed to attempt to read anything #thanks. i hate it here #today felt like i was trapped in october of last year. which was disorienting #bc it was cold ang gloomy out and i just kept listening to doomsday by lizzy mcalpine #itll get better once im back in the habit of things. at least that's what im telling myself. just expect me #to complain a lot bc im back in the torture machine. by which i mean life as a grad student #evolution prof: u should be reading at least 20 papers per week. and shes right but also what if i just lay on the floor and expire #what then? oh hey u use text to speech on papers? that must b super helpful! yeah sure it takes 2 broken things:#my ability to not process audio and not understand text in order to try to put me on a normal reading level.#except that it still fucking sucks and i hate everything.#and it doesnt even fuckibg matter for this class bc shes giving us pdf scans that are image based not text based #so i cant even use text to speech. which is ya kno. real fucking cool. welp. its been real #goodbye to any sort of notion that i appear to kno what im doing. or that i can read anything #oh god. why tf did i decide it was a good idea to come back?#dread! paralyzing dread! oh how ive missed u #unrelated

r u in a course-based program or r u doing a thesis. i am an undergrad contemplating a masters and i am. Scared <33333333

im doing a thesis!!! (^: im actually so stoked for it bc i have a really cool idea and i just have to make sure that the datasets that i have in mind for it actually check out lol im more scared of like. defending my thesis at the end of spring 2024 than actually writing the thing although everyone's told me that defense isn't that bad lol? (which personally to me im like...no...it seems far too scary asldfjsalfsa)

i would say make sure you ur research interests align w the program ur going to in particular the subfield — which seems obvious but make SURE that they WILL offer those interesting classes that you want to take and will be most beneficial to you. i def made a mistake in that although my program is one of the best for my subfield in the country, my department is going through a bit of a shift in hiring new folks so a lot of classes that i was interested in taking are not offered at all which pisses me off lol. i would say also if ur doing social sciences (like me!), make sure to pick up some R NOW. maybe your program uses stata instead (i know europe does focus on stata more than R..), but pick up the programming language that you're gonna have to use to run your regressions/inferences on and start studying up now. it'll make it sooo much more easier in the future and most programs don't have a good intro to programming boot camp.

#also. beware the stats class u have to take make sure u get the nice prof who will take into consideration that ur a grad student and not #a math undergrad lol. UNLESS of course ur area of research is math/stats than yippeee for you!!!<3 #anon

#blazie speaks #art prof took us to look at a show by some grad students at our school #I was chatting with a classmate about what the work might be about and she was like #wow ur really good at picking up what might be a coherent meaning out of some unsettling edited photos and a bunch of chair legs #and I had to be like uhh haha yeah my hobby is overanalyzing media and trying to figure out the themes #(for fanfiction.)#it was fun and mentally stimulating tho I gotta figure out where these small shows are held
