✧January 28th - Confession of Love (how do they confess to you?)

They are very shy and uncertain about it. Would you accept their confession or would you decline it? Would you even hear them out?! Their mind is panicking and they're nervous. They get even more nervous when they see you approaching while they fidget with the card they made for you in their hands. It's a very quick and sweet and they're all smiles when you accept!

Straightforward and to the point, they're not going to waste time and honestly they just want to hear your answer so these feelings can stop eating at them every time they see you. It's so annoying that they get these butterflies whenever you laugh or smile! They want to be the one to make you smile like that. And kiss your face if you'd let them...

They're nervous but in a different way. Their nervousness is on the inside rather than showing it on the outside. They're ready for whatever answer you give them and have prepared themselves for rejection. Though, their confession ends up being a little forward because they wanted to beat their anxiety and just say it outright to you rather than beating around the bush. They mean well though!

Very nervous and excited. This time, they're very excited to confess even though they haven't really prepared or thought about rejection. They're just too excited to tell you about their feelings and although rejection does cross their mind while they wait for you to arrive. If you do reject them, oh well! At least you guys can be friends, right? They very excitedly tell you after mentioning they have something to tell you.

A little more reserved with their feelings, they are forward and don't beat around the bush but they are cautious about it. They know rejection is a possibility and they wanted to be completely sure in their feelings for you before even thinking about confessing. Even then they were still a bit iffy when you arrived, thinking of not telling you just yet but, they don't regret it when they do end up confessing and you accept!

It’s the weekend (thank god), and like usual you’re spending the time in what you insist has to be the worst way possible- helping out at Wonder Stage.

You can’t even remember who dragged you into it originally- you used to do theater with Nene, you sat next to Emu in class last year, and of course you know Rui and Tsukasa. Everyone from Kamiyama High knows Rui and Tsukasa. Point is, you never had much of a friendship with any of the cast. 

So why in god’s name do they keep inviting you here?

Sure, you might have stopped a fire on the stage… and you might have rat-proofed backstage… and you might have bandaged Tsukasa’s arm when he scraped it against an unsanded prop. (Who even leaves their props unsanded? You spent the next few hours sanding almost every wood prop the stage had.) 

You realize now they’re probably using you. 

“We’re what?”

Nene looks up from her console and stares directly at you.

You also realize you said that out loud.

“You’re using me for my common sense and basic safety knowledge?”

You’re not the kind to just… dismiss something you said like that. You’ll hold yourself to it even if, like in this case, it gets you in a bit of trouble.

“We’re not using you for your common sense! I’ve got that as well!”

Nene sounds very annoyed. You’re wondering how long it’ll be until she just kicks you out.

“We’re using you for snacks.”

They’re- what? 

“…Understandable.”

You probably should have thought of that before. Theater kids (it’s no stretch to call the cast that) do love their snacks. 

And speaking of snacks-

“I brought something special for this rehearsal! Fufufu~”

You and Nene share a look of “Oh Fuck” and just watch as Rui carries a cardboard box into backstage. Tsukasa follows behind carrying a mini fridge.

“I thought we needed more food stuff back here! I mean, we need snacks between rehearsals, don’t we?”

The smile on Rui’s face shows how clearly pleased he is- you don’t want to ruin this for him.

You’re hesitant to mention the miserable past history of cooking supplies at Wonder Stage.

First was the first fridge- that one unfortunately molded over due to someone storing costumes over it. Nene didn’t mention names… but the tone she used made you think it was probably Tsukasa. 

Next was the mixer and oven. No, not a convection oven, like one meant for smaller living spaces. Rui brought a whole fucking restaurant oven to the Wonder Stage and thought it was a good idea. The mixer you actually thought would be fine (not like you were there to have a say). However Nene and Tsukasa made Rui throw out the oven because they knew that would be a violation of fire safety codes the world over. 

Of course the mixer got co-opted into practical effects.

Poor Emu only got to bake with the supplies once.

And so continues a long and troubled history with appliances, all conveyed to you backstage by whatever member happened to be hanging out with you at the time. Overall, there were:

Three failed fridges,

One failed oven,

Two failed sinks,

One entire air fryer, 

Five ice makers,

And countless random small kitchen tools 

That met a grisly end at the stage. 

Somehow one (1) microwave survived all of this appliance carnage. You’re thankful for that.

By the time you’d heard the third story you’d gotten the idea that bringing cooking supplies was a bad idea. 

And here Rui is, clearly not sharing that opinion, all smiling and cheerful. He places the box down, helps Tsukasa with getting the fridge set up, then takes his next victim out of the box. 

A blender.

“Someone is going to get injured.” Nene quite literally blurts this out. 

“Nooo! I’ll make sure of it. You have my word!” Rui is very convinced about this, you doubt you can change anything here.

“Well then, how long do you think this one will last?” You jokingly ask Nene.

“Hmm… I give it a day at most.”

Rui’s getting ingredients out of the fridge.

“I change my mind. Fifteen minutes.”

You get up, not wanting to witness this- you head instead onto the stage, deciding to hang out there. Emu’s practicing dances to herself and singing bits of the songs under her breath- you make sure to sit somewhere where you won’t interrupt her.

Unfortunately, you can still hear the chaos backstage.

“I bet I could put soda candies in here!” 

Rustling, the sound of Rui opening a bag of something.

“They’ll break the blades. Too hard.” 

Tsukasa’s voice, the sound of that bag promptly being closed and a whole new one being opened.

“But if we dissolve them—“ More bag rustling. 

“This thing has trouble enough with frozen fruit. Let’s just stick to that.” It’s odd to hear Tsukasa as the voice of reason.

“Fine. But I have no doubt it would work.”

The sound of something being poured into the blender. 

“That is… I think you should have stopped at the capacity line.” Nene’s voice now. It seems Rui has an audience.

“No! It’ll work fine.”

Aggressive blender noises and occasional mumbling you can’t make out continue for the next five minutes. 

“Fine, maybe the fill line is there for a reason. But I’m sure it’ll work if we just keep trying!” 

“Did… we didn’t add juice, did we?” 

A collective “Oh…” resounds from backstage. The sound of a fridge door opening and what sounds like an entire carton of juice being poured into the blender. 

More blender noises. By now Emu has noticed this and stops cartwheeling around stage. 

“What are they doing back there? Sounds fun!”

“Uh… Rui brought a blender. From the sound of it, he’s never used one before.” A motor roar sounds out, punctuating this statement.

“Ooh! Is he perhaps making a concoction?”

“I did not ask him and I do not want to be around to witness.”

“Well- I do!”

Emu bolts backstage, leaving you alone on the stage. 

The blender noises stop, and now you can slightly smell smoke.

“Looks like having the blades spin without making contact with anything is messing with the motor… I should-“

“We are working with food at the moment, you can dissect the blender later.” You still aren’t used to a reasonable Tsukasa.

“Don’t dissect the blender! I want to make potions with it!” Emu’s voice… god you hope they let her have it.

“Fine… I’ll settle for dissecting one of these backstage fans, they’ve got the same sort of motor- Hey! Give that back!”

Sounds like someone’s taken something. The sound of stirring.

“This should help. Though… with the sheer proportions of this drink I doubt anything can help.” Nene says, with a grimace audible in her tone.

“Trust me! It’ll work out! Now hand it over!”

“Not to Tsukasa, to-“

The sound of the blender running again cuts Rui off, though this time the sound of what has to be some sort of mechanical malfunction cuts it off after around 30 seconds.  A loud squeak from Emu, a yell from Tsukasa, and a muttered “told you so” from Nene. 

The death toll of Rui’s curiosity now includes one blender.

If he sees you baking in the kitchen, he'll help you and you don't have the right to say no. I mean just look at him! Don't you see how he shines brighter than the freaking sun at the thought of baking with you?

The face he makes every time he takes the first bite is always priceless. His eyes practically sparkle.

Also suggested that you should open a bakery, claiming that, "with your skills you'll definitely become a famous baker in no time!"

Rui Kamishiro

Will tease you for giving him a surprise pastry.

Definitely eats them as a snack as he builds his inventions and draws his blueprints.

Either that or midnight snack. Let's be honest, he probably only gets 3 hours of sleep at best with how many inventions he makes. Not to mention those ideas of his.

If he ever catches you baking, it can and will turn into a flour fight. Honestly it'll probably be a war that ends with the kitchen being all messy.

Jokingly say "My compliments to the baker." although he truly meant it.

Nene Kusanagi

Will act all shy because she never has anyone give her anything and a surprise at that?

Definitely eats them as a snack while she plays her video games.

If she sees you baking in the kitchen, she'll try her best to help you. Cooking Mama style. Do the Mama accent and you either get a laugh or a jab in the gut.

She either groans or giggles as you make a Minecraft reference while making a cake/cookies.

She probably suggested you make foods from different games/shows. For example, cookie cat from Steven Universe, butterscotch cinnamon pie from Undertale, the cake from Portal, etc etc.

One day you surprised her by making bacon pancakes from Adventure Time for breakfast and her face lit up.

Emu Otori

Congratulations, you've officially become her favorite person.

Will ask you directly if you have any pastries with you. Who can blame her? It's delicious! And if she could she'll eat it all day everyday!

If she sees you baking in the kitchen, she'll be super excited at the thought of helping you. Imagine a child who wanted to help their parents cook/bake with stars in their eyes, yeah, that's her.

Will also suggest you to open a bakery.

Gives you a small kiosk in Phoenix Wonderfully because she thinks that everyone should try your pastries and it would definitely, absolutely, 100%, guarantee, make everyone smile with just a single bite with how delicious it is.

Another day, another show, another successful day for the troupe.

"You guys did wonderful today, a total of 246 tickets were sold." [Name] stated, looking through the clipboard in his hand.

He's been friends with Tsukasa since childhood who have found joy in the world of theater although not being talented in either singing or dancing, [Name] has become their manager. He's quite grateful for such an opportunity. After all, what's a troupe without a manager?

His carrying nature made him the perfect manager for the troupe and they can't ask for a better manager.

"246 tickets!? That's a lot!" Emu cheered, it's only been a few months since they all started their path towards their dreams and to think they've already made such a progress. "Of course! It's only expected that people wanted to see our show! To see a star!" Tsukasa claims as he smiles proudly at their achievement.

Nene merely smiles as she watches the group being happy at their rising to stardom. "So manager, what's on our schedule for today?" Rui asked curiously.

"Why don't we have a break? It's been a long day."

.

As the group have a small break, [Name] left to grab something before long he returns with....

"Cookies! You're the best [Name]!" Emu cheered, her eyes sparkles the moment her eyes locked on the small container in their manger's hands. "When did you have the time to do this?" Nene asked.

[Name] puts the container on the table, smiling softly as he watch the group enjoy the cookies he made. He had always enjoy baking and surprising them with fresh pastries had easily became a hobby of his. "I managed." He replied, taking a seat next to Nene.

"Hmm~ You should open a bakery! These are delicious!" Tsukasa compliments as he took another bite of the cookie. "Fufu~ as expected of our manager~" Rui chuckles, eating the pastry with a cheshire grin.

"Honestly, you don't have to.." Nene says, nibbling on the cookie. "But I wanted to~ plus seeing your guys faces every time I gave pastries are always a joy to see~"

Their manager's baking skills had never failed to surprise them. They look absolutely adorable and they're really delicious! The first time he does this, they thought it would just be a one time thing but as time passes. [Name] continues to give them copious amounts of pastries.

They're forever grateful for their manager, not only for the pastries, but for his whole support.

It won't be long until their little theater troupe would make it big and they have their manager to thank them. Who knows? Maybe [Name] might actually start a bakery with Wonderland X Showtime promoting it? Killing two birds with one stone, no?

He appreciates it when you say it wouldn't harm a hair on his body, but... it's still a little disconcerting

Especially with how it zips and jumps all over the place! He's never seen such an excitable creature before

The amount of times he's eyed it from afar, glanced away, and then it's suddenly right beside him and caused him to jump are countless

"AARGH! H-How on earth did you get over here so fast?!" "Aww, Tsukasa! Look at how they're nuzzling you, they like you~" "I-Is that so..."

Emu, on the other hand, ADORES your pet!

Its soft little tail... its cute, small paws... its round, shiny eyes... it's just too adorable!!

The fact that she shares a similar nature with your raccoon means they easily bond and become a terrifying duo of mass chaos

(By which I mean, the two of them are determined to show you as much affection in the silliest ways possible)

Whenever Emu visits your home, she always makes sure to say hello to your raccoon too

"...And hello to you, Mr. Raccoon! Hehe, you're in such a good mood today~"

Sometimes you wonder if she's just here to play with your raccoon instead of seeing you...

Rui is extremely fascinated by your raccoon

How on earth could one little creature be so full of energy and excitement? He would love to study it. You will not let him

Your raccoon warms up to him immediately however, it's very cuddly towards him

In fact, Rui's the only person that can calm it down, other than you, of course

One of the most adorable sights you've ever come across is when you had briefly left your room to do something, only to come back to a very gleeful Rui and your pet snoozing in his lap

He also loves occasionally dropping random raccoon facts on you whenever it comes up to him

"Oh, hello there, little one. Say, did you know that a group of raccoons is called a nursery?"

Like Tsukasa, she's also wary at first

It wasn't uncommon to see her flinch away from your raccoon when it dashes around a bit too close to her, or for her to hide behind you

(She then immediately denies being scared of it out of embarrassment)

But she warms up to it eventually! Soon, her and the raccoon actually become pretty close, and she's not so jumpy around it anymore

Tsukasa honestly likes the idea, I mean imagine waking up and seeing a love letter or love note from your partner is just adorable so when you offered to spend time with him and write love notes with him he got excited and agreed on it, straightforward he tries his best to draw stars around the little note sometimes they look amazing sometimes they don't it's funny really, when signing the note he refers to himself as "your future star" or sometimes just "your star"

To think Emu doesn't already leave you small love notes is actually funny, she thinks it's the cutest thing ever if you go to school with her(and you are a girl obviously) she always leaves one on your desk inviting you to her practice, but if you hanging out with Emu she definitely doesn't mind writing love notes with you she just draws silly things around it for example cats, as to how she signs herself it's either her name or "the smiley" people called her that a few times and she likes it so why not.

Nene writes them for you secretly, she is honestly embarrassed to tell you about writing them(Emu gave her that idea) but if you ask her to write love notes together she will agree but will sign herself as Nene or Kusanagi,but when Nene writes it alone she signs herself as "your dearest anon" when she's writing with you she won't draw that much maybe a fish once in a while, but privately she will draw silly fishes and jellyfish just so you won't notice it's her.

It started off with innocent glances that you could only pass off as observing. It hadn’t bothered you that someone seemed to occupy their eyes on you as it felt harmless. A man across the room was swirling his glass around in his hand, watching as the liquid topples around the sides, while having his gaze linger on you.

Tsukasa had invited the troupe to his after-party with his acting class to celebrate a great show, and naturally, you got to come along. At this point it felt as if you were an honorary member, occasionally helping to polish off scripts and brainstorm plots with their director, but you weren’t much of an actor yourself. The troupe mingles amongst themselves until Rui branches off first, choosing to make conversation with one of the professionals to gain some insight into his own skills. Nene clings to your side knowing you aren’t the type to butt into a conversation like the others. You accept a beverage generously offered by the class and are pleased to find it’s tart cherry sparkling water. 

“If Tsukasa wasn’t having the time of his life with his classmates I think I would go congratulate him,” You speak to Nene first, breaking the slightly awkward silence between the two of you. 

“He’ll come around eventually,” She replies, “he can never get too much attention.”

You laugh lightly and drink more of the water, the aftertaste leaving you thirsty from the tartness. It felt wrong to be standing silent in the middle of the room, or maybe it was the social anxiety creeping up to make you question yourself.

“Should we introduce ourselves around? Join one of the others?” 

Emu seemed to be having the time of her life. The girl was laughing with the actor who starred as Wendy and appeared to be doing fine on her own. Rui looked intrigued by his conversation with an older, wise-looking man. No doubt he was gaining critical information he could use for the next performance. 

“I’m going to head to the restrooms,” Nene announces and points down the hallway. 

“I’ll wait.”

She seemed pleased by your words and offered a small smile and nod before departing. Staying true to your word, you stayed put and occasionally sipped on the beverage until the glass was empty. You make a mental note to grab a refill before everyone leaves.

“What is a fine girl like you doing alone in a place like this?” 

You flinch slightly, not expecting a deep voice to be right next to your ear. Nonetheless, you keep your cool appearance and turn around, not entirely surprised to see your not-so-secret admirer from earlier. Choosing to ignore his rather sexual comments, you take a steady step back to gain some distance. 

“I’m with my friends, actually. One of them was in the play.”

“I don’t see anyone with ya. I won’t abandon ya like they did.” 

His smirk is lopsided in a dark way, a grin full of malice. Alarms immediately set off in your body, but it wasn’t like you could do much against him, and he knew that. Your eyes search and search but you’ve lost sight of Rui, and you can’t exactly turn around to quickly spot the others. 

Where is Nene? Can’t she hurry up just this once?

“I’m not interest, sorry.”

Apologizing made you feel icky inside, but it’s best to seem polite and not to provoke a man like him. 

“Oh come on. What are you, a student?”

Lie. 

“A graduate.” You say curtly.

“I don’t believe that.” 

You want to crawl into a hole and die to cleanse yourself of the ick this man gives you. He senses your unease and knows that he has the advantage.

Where did everyone go?

“Why don’t we…” He steps closer, a smell of cigarettes and alcoholic makes you almost gag, “have some fun?” 

“I’m–” You swallow.

“Ah, dearest! There you are,” A firm hand wraps around your waist and pulls you close. “I was wondering where you had run off to.” 

A flood of sweet vanilla fills your nostrils and easily combats the foul scent of the creep. The moment the scent settled you knew who it was and calmed down. 

Is this the game we’re playing? You shoot the question silently with a pointing gaze. His cheshire smile says enough.

“I was waiting for our friend,” You don’t dare say her name, just in case. “She should be on her way back anytime now.”

Rui nods in understanding and turns his attention to the creep. His gaze locks, his eyes narrow, and if looks could kill, the creep would be in the deepest pit of hell.

“Have a kick out of making my girl uncomfortable during a celebration as lively as this?”

You hate to admit it, but hearing that term of endearment stirs something inside of you. Was it adoration? Gratefulness? It couldn’t possible be anything more, now that would be troublesome, wouldn’t it?

“She’s yours? I’m sorry, didn’t know, dude.”

A look of disgust crosses your friend’s face before the creep’s words even burn into your mind.

“She isn’t just an object to lay claim to,” His grip on your waist tightens, and you don’t think he even realizes. “She’s her own person. A smart, independent, and fucking capable woman.”

Damn. If you hadn’t had any sort of feelings for Rui before, you certainly do now. No one has defended you with such passion and demand before. It felt nice. Validating. 

“You–” The creep points a finger and tries to step closer to the two of you, but Rui is quick to shut that attempt down. He pulls you slightly behind him, and by now the attention of others has been attracted. 

“I suggest you stand down,” Rui smirks and plays with a pen he had been holding to take notes in his pocket notebook. He always insisted on bringing it wherever because 'you never know when inspiration may strike'. “Wouldn’t want to cause a scene now would we?”

The creep grumbles and contemplates his options. It wasn’t looking good for him, and the troupe had gathered behind you and Rui to back him away even more. He seems to decide you weren’t worth the wrath of the man protecting you and backs away, leaving the venue with a pissed off attitude. 

“You’re okay?” Rui’s persona switches around completely. His once malicious-laced words are now soft and cushion any hurt that creep may have inflicted. 

“I’m okay.”

He smiles and his hand draws back. Your waist feels oddly cold now. And just like that, everything goes back to normal.

Tsukasa loved your drawings and always wanted to look at them when you finished one. One day, you were sitting on a couch at the Tenma's living room as Tsukasa showed off his poses. You had your sketchbook out and were drawing, but Tsukasa thought nothing of it.

"I have to use the bathroom. I'll be back."

"Of course, my love! Take your time!"

Tsukasa noticed that you left your sketchbook open on the couch. He was one to respect your privacy, but curiosity got to him and he looked at the page. It was of him... posing. He flipped the page and it was also of him. He kept flipping through the pages... was this sketchbook just dedicated to drawings of him..?

He closed your sketchbook, deciding he had looked enough and sat on the couch in silence, waiting for you to return.

Emu adored you. And your art. You brought your sketchbook wherever you went. She always got super excited when you showed her your drawings. She would always compliment your art.

On a certain summer evening, you were watching her troupe's performance in the audience as the red and violet skies rested above Phoenix Wonderland.

You had finished drawing her hair, face, and head as the bell rung. You slowly got up and put your stuff away. As you were putting away your notebook, Nene approached you. She greeted you as you began to close the notebook. Nene stopped your hand from closing the notebook and examined the page you drew her on.

"This is me, right? It looks nice."

"Thank you. It took me a bit to get your hair right, though."

You began to close the notebook and put it away in your bag. Once you were done, Nene's hands intertwined with yours and you began to walk home.

From that day on, Rui would always ask to hang up your artwork of him whenever he found the chance. He's hung up countless of your drawings near his workspace. He thinks your art is wonderful and he adores the way you draw him.

You jolt awake in the middle of the night, your heart pounding in your chest. Your sweaty palms desperately grip your blanket as you try to make sense of where you are and what's real.

That... That was a dream, right? You think, exhaling deeply. I'm... I'm not in there. I'm with my friends now.

Quietly as possible, you roll onto your side to look at the other four. They're all fast asleep, snoring peacefully (some of them louder than others). Somehow, knowing that they're here beside you calms you a little.

But this living room, despite being massive, still felt way too stuffy to you. Making sure to not awaken your friends, you carefully get up and stumble away.

Emu's house was definitely way too large, and even though you've been here a couple times before, you still felt utterly lost. After blankly wandering about for a few moments, you finally manage to find a balcony overlooking the city.

The cool night air hits your face as you step out onto the balcony. It's a little chilly to be out here in only your pajamas, but you don't care about that right now.

Looking up, you can see the stars twinkling high above in the sky. There's something grounding about watching them like this, and you can forget about your nightmare for a while.

You're not sure how long you're out there, it feels like hours and minutes at the same time. Soon enough, however, you hear someone softly call your name from behind. You turn around and...

You're suddenly met with the warmth of a blanket wrapping around your shoulders, immediately causing you to feel warm and snug.

"You're going to catch a cold if you stay out here like this," Tsukasa lightly scolds you. "It's important that you stay healthy! I would hate for you to become sick."

You stare at him blankly for a few moments, shocked to even see him here in the first place (how does he not get lost in Emu's labyrinth of a house??), before realising you should probably say something.

"Um, thanks." You smile awkwardly, holding onto the blanket to make sure it doesn't fall off of you. "Do you just... carry a blanket around with you?"

Tsukasa chuckles lightly and shakes his head. "No, no. When you got up to leave, you accidentally nudged my arm a bit and woke me up. I thought you were just getting a glass of water or something, but you didn't come back for ages so I decided to come find you!"

Tsukasa folds his arms and frowns. "But then I found you out here, and... Listen, if you want some time alone, that's fine! I'll go back to the others! I just didn't want you to be cold, because I could see you shivering..."

You didn't realise you had been that cold in the first place. You barely noticed the cold, you'd been so wrapped up in your own thoughts.

"I'd actually quite like it if you stayed out here with me, if that's okay." You speak softly, gaze averted in embarrassment. It's such a simple request, but for some reason, you feel guilty asking for it.

"Of course that's okay!" Tsukasa declares, placing his hands on his hips with a grin. "I'd be more than happy to stay out here with you for however long you want!"

He strides over and leans on the balcony beside you. You both stand in silence for a few moments, and you wonder if you should say something. Do I tell him about the nightmare? Maybe it's best if I just keep it in...

You glance at him out of the corner of your eye, only to notice him staring up at the night sky above. He has a small, content smile on his face as he gazes upwards.

He looks so much calmer than usual. You didn't know he liked stars so much.

Without thinking, you shuffle over and lean your head on his shoulder. Somehow, he feels softer and warmer than the blanket swaddling you.

"Hm?" Tsukasa turns to you in surprise, before he soon relaxes again and wraps his arm around your shoulder, bringing you in close.

A sigh of relief escapes your lips as you relax against him. Being in his presence like this is making you feel so much more at ease than before. Your eyes begin to droop closed as the two of you stand together, your nightmare long forgotten.

"Oh, Emu. Hi."

The short pink-haired girl stands in the entryway, her head tilted to the left ever-so-slightly. She bounces on her feet ever-so-slightly as she rushes to you, skidding to a halt in front of the railing.

"You're awake!" She exclaims, wide eyes studying you carefully. "Aren't you super sleepy right now?"

"Not really." A yawn cuts in between your words, as if to prove you wrong. "I can't sleep."

Emu stays silent for a few moments. You feel like her bright pink eyes are going to stare right into your mind and pluck out your secrets for all to see.

"Okay. I'll wait until you're tired, then." Her forearms come up to rest on the railing, on which she rests her head.

You open your mouth to object, to tell her that it's fine and she should just go back to bed, but you realise you want her company. You turn to face the view once again.

The two of you stay silent for a while. It's not usually like this with Emu - she's always quite talkative. But right now, she's not saying a thing.

She's probably just tired, you reason with yourself. I doubt she's used to being up this late, unlike... some other people I know.

That's when she speaks up again to prove you wrong. You really feel like she's reading your mind or something.

"Do you wanna see something cool?"

You turn your head slightly. "Uh, sure. What is it?"

"Follow me!" Emu beams and takes your hand, leading you off the balcony.

You have to follow her for quite a while. You don't think you'll ever get used to this place, and you have to wonder if Emu ever feels lost in it herself.

Eventually, she starts leading you up some stairs into what appeared to be an attic. Emu hops up some precarious-looking stairs and opens a small window to the roof. She grins, beckoning you over.

"E-Emu, is this safe...?" You question, feeling apprehensive as you cautiously climb the stairs.

She nods enthusiastically. "Don't worry! I've done this plenty of times! You'll be just fine~!"

You don't have a choice except to trust her. You carefully climb the stairs and look through the window, where Emu has climbed through.

You're at a fairly high point of Emu's home, although not quite the highest. You're on a flat roof, with walls surrounding it so that neither of you would accidentally fall off.

"Oh," you murmur, climbing out and standing on the roof beside her.

Emu collapses on a couple pillows and blankets she has positioned on the roof and smiles at you invitingly. "Come sit!"

You take a seat beside her as she lays down and points at the sky. "Look! You can see the stars super well!"

Upon lying down as well, you realise she's right. The stars look even more beautiful from up here, and you love it.

"I wish I knew more stuff about stars," Emu sighs. "One of my friends loves them! I like listening to her talk, but she has such a calming voice that it makes me sleepy..."

You glance at her out of the corner of your eye. "I know a few constellations, if you'd like to learn, maybe?"

Emu's eyes sparkle in joy. "Yes, yes!! I'd love that!!"

You smile softly, before turning your attention to the sky and pointing. "Okay, see those up there? That's Ursa Minor..."

As you start to talk about the different constellations in the sky, Emu's gaze briefly wanders to you, and the content smile on your face.

They don't look so sad anymore, she thinks gleefully as she turns her attention back to the sky.

"Nene? What are you doing awake?"

The green-haired girl hesitates in the doorway, as if she's thinking carefully.

"I could ask you the same thing," she responds. "I just got up to get some water. Why are you out here?"

You feel pretty reluctant to tell her about your nightmare. It sounds embarrassing in your head to tell someone you had a nightmare, as if you were a child. You grow uncomfortable as your gaze drifts to your feet.

"...Can't sleep." Is what comes out of your mouth.

"So, you had a nightmare." Nene cuts in immediately, as if seeing right through you.

You clear your throat in embarrassment and turn away. You didn't expect her to figure it out so quickly. Was it that obvious?

Nene takes a couple steps closer. "Usually whenever I have a nightmare, I like to play some games for a while before I go back to sleep. It helps me get my mind off of it."

You glance back at her, brow furrowed slightly. "Don't you only play those violent shooter games? Wouldn't that just make it worse?"

"N-No," she splutters, cheeks tinged pink, "I-I don't just play those! I play some other things too..."

You can't resist the urge to smile at her embarrassment, which causes her to glare at you and huff.

"Do you want to play a game with me or not?" She demands.

You laugh slightly and nod. "Yes, I'd love to. Thank you, Nene."

She quickly turns around and heads back into the home. She's back soon enough, holding two handheld game consoles - yours and hers - as well as a blanket. She sits down on the ground, before tilting her head up to you.

"C'mon. Sit."

You sit beside her, pulling one end of the blanket around you as Nene takes the other half. You had just realised how cold you were, so you lean against her as you boot up the console.

"So, what do you wanna play?" You ask softly.

Silence. You thought maybe Nene was just thinking about it, but she's just not responding.

"Nene?"

She clears her throat as you prompt her. You catch a glimpse of her red face out of the corner of your eye. "Sorry. Um, I bought this game recently, and I think you told me you liked it...?"

You scan her screen quickly and sit up, beaming. "Oh, that's one of my favorite games!! I'd never thought you'd play it, because it's not really your style. Thank you, Nene!"

She hides her face in her hair as you speak so you don't see how red she's getting. Nene boots up the game as she speaks. "No... No problem, I guess."

You beam and continue resting your head on her shoulder as you open the game as well, eager to play it with your friend.

You come face-to-face with Rui, who's watching you with an odd expression. He's smiling as usual, but you can sense some concern in his gaze.

He walks over and leans on the railing beside you, before tilting his head in curiosity.

"Didn't expect you to still be awake at this hour," he comments casually. "What brings you out here?"

You look away, clutching the railing a little more tightly and bowing your head slightly. "Can't sleep."

"Are you sure? That's all?" Rui further prods, leaning his head on his arms. You feel like his piercing yellow eyes have already seen all your secrets, somehow.

You look away. "...Yeah. That's all."

You know that he knows you're lying, his soft "I see" after you speak tells you that much. You just can't bring yourself to talk about it right now.

You tilt your head down to stare at your hands. You're clinging to the railing so tightly that it's starting to hurt your hands, and you didn't even realise til now. You release your death grip, but continue resting your hands on it.

Suddenly, you hear something... mechanical? It sounds as if something is moving. You glance over to see some kind of contraption balancing on the railing. Instinctively, you put your hand around it, stopping it from falling off the railing just in case that would happen.

"R-Rui?!" You snap your head around to stare in bewilderment at the inventor. "You can't just put these guys on such precarious areas! What if it falls off and gets damaged?"

He only laughs at your fretting. "Its legs can stick to any surface it likes. Don't worry."

As if to prove this, the robot walks around the railing, hanging on underneath for a few moments before walking back up again. It beeps at you proudly.

You reluctantly remove your hands. "...Fine. What does it do, anyway?"

Rui pouts at you in the saddest way he can. "Ah, is walking around and sticking to surfaces not enough...? Don't you love him the way he is?"

The robot lets out a few small, sad beeps. Before you can respond to his antics, Rui's signature smile returns like it never left.

"Anyways, yes. It can create small projections in the air. For example..."

On queue, the circular top of the robot lights up, and a couple butterflies appear in the air, flying around without a care in the world. It was surprisingly realistic, enough that you were almost convinced that there were butterflies in front of you.

"...Woah." You breathe, watching in awe. "You made this?"

Rui nods, smiling warmly as the projections change - this time to a bird flying through the sky.

"You got its movements down so well," you murmur. You carefully reach out to brush your finger against it, but of course, it just goes right through. It is a projection, after all.

It lastly switches to a projection of jellyfish slowly floating through water, which makes you really excited. You love jellyfish, after all! They're just so pretty, and seeing them in front of you like this brings you so much joy. Even if it isn't real.

Rui chuckles at the way your eyes light up. "I had a feeling you'd like that one." He grins and leans his head on his hand as he continues watching you.

"And hey, you're not so down anymore, are you?"

You halt immediately, realising he's completely right. You'd totally forgotten about your nightmare thanks to Rui's little contraption.

"Yeah. Thanks." You offer him a small smile. "If you have them with you, could I see more of your robots?"

Rui's eyes flash with glee at being asked a question like that. "Why yes, of course! I'd be very glad to show you some more!"

He cups his hands and moves closer to you, where you can see a large variety of contraptions, way more than anyone would normally need to take anywhere.

Dumbfounded, you turn your gaze to him. "You seriously took all of these here?"

Rui shrugs, as if it's a normal occurrence for him. "I just enjoy being prepared. Now, look here. First, this one can bring small objects to you if you ask..."

₊⊹ You and Emu were very close, and one day she came up with an idea for you to have fun together. That idea was a sleepover.

₊⊹ Fortunately, you agreed, and it was a tedious day and night included.

₊⊹ Since you were both bored, the first thing you decided to do was to go to an amusement park. It was fun there, but also yes, sometimes some of the rides made you scared. After having fun, you just walked around the park and talked about everything you could think of.

₊⊹ After that, you went to the store to get some snacks for the evening. At her house, you decided to bake cookies. You both did not do too badly, but the kitchen was pretty messy after baking and you had to clean up a bit...

₊⊹ You were a little tired from the day, and you could both use a quiet rest, so you played board games in the evening. Mostly you were winning, but Emu was keeping up too!

₊⊹ Afterwards, you decided to play a game called "True or False". The aim of the game was to tell a story and the person had to decide whether it was true or fiction.

₊⊹ Emu offered to do a photo shoot for you. You agreed, and you had to take some scary pictures. It was long, but it was worth it.

"Oh, Y/N-chan, look what I got!"

₊⊹ she said before showing off all her plush toys. There weren't too many, but not few either.

₊⊹ Emu's plush toys seemed cute to you, which pleased her. But soon you were lying in bed with the plush toys and watching a scary movie with her. At the same time, you were eating chips, marmalade, and other junk food. You also drank sodas.

₊⊹ It was an unforgettable sleepover because after this movie, you fell fast asleep in the arms of Emu's toys.
