DPXDC Prompt #142 Part 2
His parents had spent years working on their portal, to the point where they were neglecting their own children. Danny didn’t know any better, neither did Jazz. To them it was just how their family ran and for the most part it worked for them. It allowed Danny to really study space and the Stars. His room was covered with different ship models on the shelves, glow in the dark stars on the ceiling and posters on the walls.
Jazz had similarly explored her own thoughts and topics as she studied Psychology. Her room was more feminine but still had a certain scientific decorum to it.
He never thought that he’d suddenly be ripped from all the things he loved. But here he was with the trench coat man, instead of taking some biology class or something.
“What happened with the portal?” Danny asked.
The man took a long sigh, “listen… quite a lot of shit went down after your accident.”
“That tells me nothing,” Danny glared at the man.
“I get your upset kid, but let me at least know your name. Mine's John Constantine,”
“…Danny,” Danny muttered after a moment. He wasn’t sure he trusted the man but he guessed he had no choice. He was also noticing he felt a bit off, it was the weirdest gut feeling and Danny was having trouble telling exactly what the feeling was. It was like the feeling was telling him to trust John, although at the same time John had this weird feeling about him that had Danny feeling weary. He decided to trust John just a little, hopefully it got him back home, after a moment Danny spoke again, “…Can you at least tell me if the portal worked?”
The room was silent for a moment and then John spoke “Alright, fine, I’ll tell you what happened but some background first, do you know who the ancients are?”
The name didn’t sound familiar, “Ancients? Like Ancient Aliens or something?”
“No, no…” John took a swig from a flask in his pocket and then started fiddled with an unlit cigarette he pulled from a different pocket. He then looked Danny up and down, “You don’t know the first thing about the infinite realms do you?”
“The what?” None of this was making any sense and the more Danny talked to this guy the more he was getting a feeling of dread in the pit of his stomach. Something about this conversation felt wrong, like Danny should know all of this already but he just didn’t.
“Right well… I guess the easiest way to explain this is the portal your parents made was to the infinite realms.” John said, putting the cigarette in his mouth.
“My parents called it the Ghost Zone.” Danny muttered.
John seemed to chuckle at that, “I mean it is mainly inhabited by ghosts, however they aren’t the only ones, far from it in fact. I’m sorry but… I couldn’t allow your parents unlimited access to the realms. I had to disable it and prevent it from being reactivated.”
Danny felt a little disheartened after hearing that, he guessed John was probably right though. He remembered hearing his parents talk about how they’d dissect every ghost they found to study them. The bully’s at his school often bullied Danny over it especially after his dad and mom would continually embarrass him on parent teacher nights and on field trips.
Danny let out a small sigh, “so when can I go home?”
John looked a little surprised, his eyebrow quirked up, “so you're unaware of your situation right now?”
“Situation?” Danny trailed off, he remembered getting shocked and then he remembered waking up here, “where are we?”
John let out another sigh, “shit, well from my research you're supposed to know everything about your powers when you wake up.”
This made no sense to Danny, powers? Danny didn’t have powers, he didn't have the meta-gene.
“Powers? I don’t have the meta-gene. I think you have the wrong person.” Danny stated as he folded his arms in front of himself.
“Then how are you floating?” John asked with a smirk.
Danny looked down and he indeed was floating just an inch off the bed, he wondered when that started but the feeling threw him off a little as he stumbled a little trying to keep himself upright. It didn’t work and he fell back down on the bed with a little thud. He turned to see John watching him with a small hint of amusement in his eyes.
“What am I?” Danny asked, his voice small and a little panicked.
“You, Danny Fenton, are an Ancient. I know the term makes it seem like you're old but the term is more because your people are ancient in age.” The explanation made no sense to Danny but he could somehow float now. He thought the term ‘Ancient’ was a little much for some floating powers.

The humans had joined the war.
High Admiral Stailxaeth was concerned, of course. Any new development in a war effort brought about the risk of surprises and unexpected losses, things that could change the course of the entire campaign and require plans to be remade from the ground up. Thus far, the Aux’uin conquest of Committee space had little cause for such worries, and she had found the opposition almost boring.
The GC were slow, bureaucratic, and predictable. Certainly they had resources to spare, and a steep numerical advantage, but their tactics were centuries-old and the rigid hierarchies that the GC ran on were incapable of quick adaptation. But worst of all, Stailxaeth could not imagine an organization the scope of the Committee being so woefully inept at counterintelligence. Auxi data collection had maintained effectively open access to everything on GC networks, even segments that the Committee laughably considered secure. And their spy network was so efficient that Stailxaeth was reasonably confident that she was more up-to-date on GC affairs than the bureaucrats at the bottom of the Committee power structure.
The humans, however, were an enigma.
There were certainly things they knew about the odd race. They weren’t total isolationists or some sort of absolute black box. And in many ways their networks were even more open than those of the rest of the GC worlds — almost as though humanity scoffed at the very notion of data security. However, what could be found on those human networks was another matter entirely. A constant, relentless outpouring of data, flowing from their systems like radiation pouring from a pulsar, and it was virtually all nothing but the most asinine cultural detritus.
Children’s entertainment from centuries prior. Endless audio streams of hundreds of styles of music covering the entire span of human history. Amateur recreations of classic works of human art. So many fanciful depictions of non-human creatures that, for a time, it was believed humanity had made contact with an entire other interstellar union. A frankly unsettling variety of depictions of mating acts with those creatures.
When it was realized that their data analysts were spending more effort sorting through human cultural ephemera than all the data from the rest of the Galactic Committee combined, and yet finding nothing actionable, the human networks were discarded. Some in the information-gathering business believed that humanity was practicing some extreme form of security through obscurity. Others were convinced that the entire human network they had examined was one massive diversion, and the truly important information was held on a much more hidden, much more secure network. The question of which remained unsolved because humanity had also shown a surprising capability to root out their spies and either turn them away or redirect them to low-value targets.
The most glaring gap in their knowledge, however, was just what humanity would - or could - do. The humans were not known for maintaining any war machine of note. They didn’t appear to have any large technological advantage that would matter to a war effort. They could barely be considered to have a functional government by galactic standards, and privately Stailxaeth wondered who it was that actually dealt with the Committee, and was given permission to act.
There were really only two things that could be said about humans — first, they were engineers at grand scales. Humanity built space-based structures that defied belief, even by the standards of the older races of the GC. They had built some manner of structure encircling their home star, apparently in an effort to re-engineer the chemistry of the star itself, and, if rumor on the human public network was to be believed, they were devising a method to move a star to a new location, apparently as a proof of concept in preparation for “managing” the eventual collision between this galaxy and the one the humans called “Andromeda”.
The second thing about humans, is that almost universally, their contacts within the GC felt it necessary to warn them that no one thinks like the humans do. As if such a thing needed to be said of a race that saw galactic mergers as a thing one attempted to control.
An alarm cut her musings short and Stailxaeth threw the data pad carrying the announcement aside in favor of running to the bridge.
“Report!” she barked as soon as she was clear of the doors and moving to her command position in the center of the room.
A young officer stood to attention. He did not salute, but depending on the situation she supposed she could forgive that. “High Admiral! Gravitics have detected a massive wake passing through subspace. Preliminary estimates place it on the mass scale of a small planetoid.”
Stailxaeth narrowed her eyes. The humans were acting much more quickly than the Committee ever had. And so much for not maintaining a war fleet… “A fleet large enough to create a wake of that size—”
“Negative, High Admiral.” A science officer cut her off. That she likely would not forgive. But that was a matter for later. “Despite the mass scale, all signs indicate a coherent mass and a single engine signature. There is only one ship, though it’s impossible to say what it’s dragging along with it.”
“One ship? Of that scale? Confirm your findings before you interrupt me with them.”
The science officer shook her head. “Ma’am, I had already confirmed the sensors with both backup systems, operated by other engineers. I would not have interrupted you had I not considered the matter ur—”
An alert sounded — Subspace breach in vicinity.
Another alert — High-mass navigational hazard in vicinity.
Yet another — Potential threat in vicinity.
And one more — gravitational disruption, recalibrating.
The final alert was redundant, however, as the entire bridge crew were made well aware of the disruption when they lurched forward, suddenly slightly heavier towards the primary display screen.
The High Admiral didn’t even need to give the command. By the time she’d had the thought, someone had brought the new arrival on screen.
The scale of the craft was mind-boggling. It wasn’t a ship, it was more fittingly called a space station, but even that term seemed to fall short of the thing in front of them. Beyond the sheer scope of the thing, Stailxaeth couldn’t make sense of its strange, looping, circular structure. It bore an odd resemblance to a gargantuan coolant coil as much as anything else.
She recovered her wits and barked commands at the crew again. “Weapons! Bring ours online and get to scanning! I want to know what the hell that thing is carrying!”
After a flurry of commands being relayed and frantic typing on consoles, one of the bridge crew looked up at the High Admiral. “Ma’am, the craft does not appear to be equipped with any form of standard weaponry. There are mass drivers, but they appear to be configured for cargo launches, and a number of laser arrays, but they shouldn’t be focused enough for combat use. The only other system of note is some manner of massive emission array, but we—”
“We have contact!” another crew member interrupted. “Signal from the unknown craft.”
Stailxaeth straightened and fixed the forward screen with her most firm glare. “Open communication. Let me speak with them.”
After a moment, the image of the colossal craft was replaced with one of a bridge — darker, grimier, and less refined than the flawless elegance of her own craft. And a collection of the awkward-looking bipeds she knew as humans as opposed to her auxi crew.
“Human captain, you speak to High Admiral Stailxaeth, commander of the aux’uin fleet. Your vessel has entered aux’uin space. You have been recognized as an enemy of our people through your alliance with the Galactic Committee. However, as you have yet to engage in hostilities, I will permit you the chance to turn back. If you do not, you will be destroyed.”
To be fair, she was not convinced they could destroy a vessel of that mass, and there were too many unknowns for her to want to risk a boarding action. If she could convince them to delay until they could gather more information…
“High Admiral,” the human on the screen said, leaning forward in its seat. “This is Chief Engineer Wallace of the starlifter Hephaestus. What is it you want?”
Stailxaeth hesitated. A starlifter? She’d heard that term before. That’s what humans called that structure around their star — it was a marvelous feat of engineering, yes, but it was no warship. But what kind of question was that? “Explain yourself. I will not be bought.”
The human engineer shook his head. “Not you personally. What is it the aux’uin are after with this whole war effort? If there’s some material need then maybe we can come to an arrangement. There’s a lot of resources out there if you know how to get at them, and war’s a pretty wasteful way of going about it.”
“That is none of your concern, human. And I find it the height of arrogance — to the point of absurdity — that you would come here, in an unarmed manufacturing platform, and attempt to negotiate terms before a single shot has been fired.”
“Admiral, with all due respect, there is no such thing as an unarmed starship. For example, this manufacturing platform was built to spend the majority of its operational life within a stellar atmosphere. I don’t have schematics but we’ve all watched the video feeds from your attacks on the GC and I’m pretty sure your weapon output isn’t comparable to a point-blank solar flare, so I don’t think we’d really notice it.” The human leaned back in the seat and crossed one leg over the other. A display of casual arrogance, if she recalled briefings on human mannerisms correctly.
“You describe a stalemate, at best.” Stailxaeth glowered at the screen. What was it trying to prove? She suspected a delaying tactic, but why confront them with one at all? Why give up the element of surprise?
“I haven’t brought it up since we’d really rather not turn this into a fight, but you’re within sight of enough of our laser arrays that I could probably evaporate your ship within a few minutes.”
The High Admiral shook her head. “Foolishness. Our shielding can withstand directed energy that diffuse for—”
She was cut off as the warship lurched again, this time accompanied by flickering lights and the sudden smell of ozone that promised electrical damage.
“Shields offline!” someone shouted. “Disruption from a massive radiation field!”
“Admiral, this is going to make subspace jumps impossible. We can’t maneuver effectively.”
“Systems are under strain across the entire ship,” one of her engineers called out. “EM shielding can’t hold off this amount of ionizing radiation for long.”
“The magnetic scoop we use to pull apart stellar mass and sift through it for useful atoms does a number on sensitive electronics like energy shields.” The human was baring his teeth now. She understood humans meant that as a display of humor or goodwill rather than a threat, but in this scenario it seemed to convey the more common meaning. “I’d feel very bad about evaporating your ship and collecting the dust for resources, but I’d like you to know I do have the option. It would be an even bigger ethical dilemma — weigh on my heart for ages, I promise — if I were to park this ship in your home system, fire up the big array, and spend… oh, about 180 hours by our estimates, evaporating your capital world and building something more useful out of it. But, again, you ought to know I have the option.”
She could only stare as the human leaned forward again.
“Now let me ask again — is there something you all want from this that benefits everyone, or am I here to mine some more exotic resources than usual?”
No one thinks like a human, indeed.
For 10 long years war has raged while the Galactic Committee held a tight leash on the humans; stating “We do things a certain way”. Now, with the enemy closing in, the leash comes off.

I think its so funny that I have an entire world that I'm building but one main story that I've basically made the focus of that world's purpose to tell. Meanwhile I'm over here snickering like "Chat doesn't know about the three other side plots. Chat doesn't even KNOW about the Jackalope tribe or what it has to do with the vampire excorcist x necromancer or how it has a love square. They don't know about what the baby unicorn has to do with the undead circus lore. teehee."
