Quick Animated Character Appreciation: ROTSM Kon-El Gives Me HEART ATTACK

Have I made it clear yet how much I enjoy this version of Kon-El? I don't think I have: This sugar-high-on-a-1000, raging-hormone/in-puberty, outdated slang-having, cocky kid was the best thing from the Reign of the Supermen movie and the entirety of that two-parter saga. He was such an adorably annoying little showoff and hustler (at least at one point with Clark) who you could tell had mountains more of depth beneath the surface just waiting to jump out! Perfect combination of Clark/Superman and Lex Luthor in every way, too! I love, love, loved it! He was exactly how the character should ideally be written and portrayed imo! (Side Note: Look at the tears that the girl behind him to our right [in the second image] is shedding! She adores this Kon-El that much. And I don't blame her!)

Superboy to a not-actually-dead Superman a few minutes after meeting him: *Probably dumps his ocean-sized amount of trauma onto him which Lex has already put him through in the short amount of time that he and Lex have known each other and been in contact* "...Seriously. A room full of hungry...bizarros."

A "resurrected", oddly calm yet probably very concerned Superman: "Sounds harrowing."

Superboy, now seeing his chance to hustle a new home with his other dad: "Soo, can I live with you or not?"

Superman with months-worth of 5 o' clock shadow: *Doesn't even get a chance to think it over yet, much less respond, due to them being interrupted by Steel The Third Wheel (but also doesn't say no)*

Gosh I'm so sad/mad we'll never get see him in Superman Media again because they permanently deaded that universe!! 🥺 (Plus they forced us to watch him get slaughtered!!!! 😩) I won't forget him anytime soon though!! He'll stay in my primary color-painted heart!!!! 💛❤️💙

Bruce Wayne: The Epitome of a Hero

Batman without fail has proven himself a near-perfect hero, impressive for the fact that he's first generation and had tackled Gotham's cursed land. But obviously, as with any being on earth, the stress of the facade weighs on him. The stretch between the isle of Bruce Wayne and the Scowl of Batman no longer cut clean. They blur and tear at him ravenously until he sometimes feels he is nothing but a ghost of obsession, of a boy in the middle of an alley with his parent's blood puddled around his knees.

Bruce, in essence, needs something to define himself, he is a man who cares for his partners painfully (each robin has chiseled a part of himself out) and yet he cannot choose them over his city (over his villains). He has nobody else to define who he is, he is nothing without them and as much as he loves being their father the cowl is the only thing he has left of what was once an unbreakable will

The darling plays a sort of anchor, a guide, a definition that Bruce can cling onto. For Bruce who cannot say confidently that he can live truly as either a civilian or a hero without regret, his darling is all he has to cling to. For even should he forsake his sacred code that defines him, forsake his morals that he clings to, and go off the deep end never to return he can still manage to drench himself in you. 

You're in his bones, his flesh, and on his lips at all times of the night and day, the cowl and fatherhood are at his core and as they conflict, chipping away at him and forcing him into nothing but a broken mess you seep into the cracks and fill him up until all of him is nothing but you, you, you. Your scorn, your praise, all of what you say, you're what he can finally define himself off of.

It doesn't matter if your nails drag into his skin as a punishment, or even if you carve your woes into his flesh with a knife. He will take them as his law all the same he will revere your kisses, your soft touches, and your smiles. His unbreakable will is nothing in the end as long as he has you.

You have him in the palm of his hand, your word is law, you define who he is with your mood, whether he is a failure and must strive to be better or whether he can finally rest is all up to you.

Even from a young age when childhood should have been grass stains and scraped knees, Dick has always known an audience's eyes and dizzying heights. He knows his role, his actions and his expressions are all being watched, and taken into account and he knows best how to play the role of the easily lovable. Responsibility and acting all of this have been him forever, he's a natural at it. Basically, its second nature for him to mold himself into the one everyone likes, he knows the script and he plays it well

Richard Grayson: The golden boy

His entire life has been a role, something that he has to put his all into acting, the perfect robin, the leader of the titans, the leader of the young justice league, Nightwing-the vigilante who garners the respect of heroes and law alike. It is a tightrope walk of never-ending smiles and actions and if he slips it all comes crashing down and he cannot risk it. If he bows to the weight on his shoulders, even if it's all too much he has far too much to lose. Of course, he loves being loved, and he genuinely does love his family, loves his pseudo father and his little brothers and his friends but he knows who they love and it might not be him as a person.

The darling for him is a slow burn. a t first their a sort of self-fulfillment, just a little fix of appreciation from his favorite person, but the more he visits them, the more he drops some prefixes, is able to be a little rougher around the edges he gets lost in it, the brunt of his feelings finally flooding out from the cracks in his perfect facade and you're his addiction. He needs you to need him, to like him, to adore him he needs you to approve of who he is without the flashing lights and cameras. It's a strange mix of needing your approval to prove that he's still balancing, that the weight hasn't yet managed to take hold and drag him down, and needing you to see the fact that he is a broken grieving man. He's been used and weaponized and he just needs to know that outside of that Richard Grayson is still useable, love him outside of his role, be his everything meld your existence into his he's begging you

It comes to a point that he can almost no longer separate where you begin and where he ends, and he's never felt so intoxicated, so in love, because if love isn't the way he can barely focus, his brain clouding over and the way he basically turns into an animal for you, your loyal little dog he doesn't know what could possibly count. As long as he has your praise, your approval, and your need for him he's a brainless pet. Just love him, love him, love him or he might finally fall. 

What many forget about the second robin is though he is the robin who crosses the lines others won't, the one who sees things to a more permanent end, Jason is the one who is more in tune with his emotions. They overwhelm him and lead him more than rationality but Jason has emotions, he bares his heart on his sleeve, and others are simply too blind to see it. Perhaps it's because of this strange self-awareness, of how fucked he is, how broken he is that he cannot delude himself in the same way his family does. He cannot seem to meld himself with you(how could something like him even think of being one with someone like you), but he's so desperate for the connection. 

Jason Todd: The monster

In comparison to the other robins, Jason understands that he is replaceable. It's so easy to swap him out with any other broken street rat, hell he might even argue it would be an improvement. He's watched Gotham from its sewer, eyes glancing over crime alleys streets from broken street lights as a child, how women were beaten into submission by men with too much audacity and beer on their breath, how good men would be turned to corpses and looted, how children stood on corners and Gotham nods her head because his city is nothing it not vile and rotten in its core

He has known death intimately and hates life just a little bit more because there isn't anything he can feel truly justifies how Gotham lets the sewage and filth thrive. He's never had the luxury of childhood, of the safety of a child's innocence because he's aware that life isn't a gift, it's a cesspool of sin prepping souls on earth for hell. There's nothing good, but there are people who need protection from it and Jason goes about his days repenting for existing because there's no divinity, no god other than the men who see themselves on the top of the chain. There's no god before you.

His darling is a light, something near untouchable, someone who can do no wrong. Jason is the type of delusional where he can justify every single thing Darling can ever say or do, say the skies green and he’ll rearrange the dictionary just to prove you right. You in a sense define what is good or evil, something invaluable, something so good that they could even pity him. A benevolent deity bestowed open Gotham and he'd be damned if he let anything from the street touch you. Jason is the robin who came back wrong, the killer, the monster, the black sheep of the family of maniacs who want better from the world, and he's disgusting but he'll do anything for you.

In a sick way, he already knows well how his presence is painfully unworthy of you, but he longs, craves, and hungers for you all the same. He's reverent in his treatment. If he cannot connect with you by becoming one he'll be your loyal slave, your servant to the ends of the earth, his hands are already stained but even his own sins become virtues if there for you. He lives and breathes on you, everything he does is for you until the dead bodies piling his work are but offerings, sacrifices all for you. Carve a place in your body for him to reside, for him to leash himself upon so he can hide and forever more belong to you. A Divine and their monster acolyte. 

Tim is a being born of neglect, constant patronization, rejection, and scorn. His only sense of motivation had been at first obsession without a sense of preservation. Tim has always known nothing but a world where he has to be able to provide to earn his right to stay, to exist. He knows intimately what it's like to be looked through, to be invisible, to have his own name replaced with another, or to have never been born, so like money he exchanges himself and all his actions in a transactional way. Every relationship for him is a simple give and take, he gives them what they want, and they let him stay and remember his name. As long as Tim is functioning and working he can't be thrown away, can't be truly invisible. As long as he is working he is kept.

Tim Drake: The Forgotten 

Tim is smart, he knows how to run the table, and play the game and he does it well, he knows exactly how to pick apart everyone around him. Tears into them and learns, absorbs, and sees what they need, how he needs to act, what he needs to provide, and remakes himself for the sake of their approval. From the constant twists and turns of his character, Tim knows how to seek out the role, how to play it, how to thrive in it, Tim sees everything, and thus he is left feeling empty because nobody sees him. Something carnal in him screams for something, anything to tear him apart as well, to meet his obsession with their own.

His darling is someone who he needs to ruin him, he needs them to dissect him, to cut him up and tear away everything and covet his entrails. He's begging you to tear away at him, until Red Robin is nothing until Drake Wayne is but a far away title, and see him, see Time in all he is. Obsessive, disgusting, and desperate. He needs his darling to keep digging even as they see this and decide he's good enough to continue unraveling, to rip him open and keep something of him in your pocket.

As is apparent the relationship with his darling is almost masochistic in a way, with a clear power dynamic but what is to be noted is that while he is desperate he will never truly give up control. He knows when he is being manipulated, but he thrives on it, that you've picked him apart and have decided him worthy to manipulate, you get what he allows but he allows a lot for you. He wants his darling to devour him whole, to stitch themselves into a Frankenstein monster just as he has with them. Take on his mannerisms, remember his coffee order, his eye color, anything. He'd thrive just knowing they have a photo of him somewhere in their pocket. (as if it equates to the massive amounts of video he has on you, the photos, the cameras, the trackers, the microphones, the bugs, and chips)he just needs you to know who he is. He needs you to prove that Timothy Drake truly exists. 

What most cannot see off the bat due to confident words and even more confident actions is that the most familiar feeling Damian is acquainted with is unsurity. He is a being born with a purpose, and the purpose was not to be human, it was to be heir, to be a leader to be everything that he needed to be. His life is a mix of criteria he needs to meet, of missions and proving himself and needing to be perfect, needing the validation of praise and a good grade. He is the heir of a league of assassins and yet he can no longer kill, he is the protege of a notorious hero and yet he contemplates lethality for too much, day in and day out Damian defines himself by this conflict and with true humanity alluding him, he cannot tell truly who he is. 

Damian Wayne: The heir 

The source of his need for competency comes from fear of inadequacy. Because if he cannot fit the criteria given, if he cannot prove himself worthy then does he even have the right to exist? When he has been born for a role he can no longer call his own, where does that leave him? Lost, he's lost and wandering and he thinks something is rotting in him. It plagues him, the fact that Damian Wayne is a leader, son, brother,heir but not human.

His darling in his case plays the role of safe haven, a little home in the form of flesh and blood where he can bury himself alive. He needs the surety they bring, there is no throne, no rubric or evaluation, there is only their own eyes and lips and Damian's own heart in their hands. They are his humanity, if Damian is a role then they are his wants and needs, they are his tears and very heart, he's sure if he could tear his chest open his darling would be there, cradled precisely within his ribs. In their arms Damian feels so painfully useless that he remembers he too has lungs that need air, that he too has basic needs, he feels helpless and ragged and he thinks that this sort of helplessness can be nothing but love.

Darling is living proof that Damian Wayne has something to himself outside of Robin, outside of al-Ghul, and outside of his last name. He is flawed, he sleeps and dreams and cries and is so very weak. He eats from the palm of your hand, everything that makes him disgustingly weak, mortal, he's putty in your hands, even if you were to feed him poison he would drink greedily. The thought of death, the foe that drove his grandfather to the pits over and over again, feels no harder than a feather brush with your arms around him.

He is far too old to fancy himself a darling, and far too sensible to feel infatuation as strongly as his wayward family but he can care, and he can love and he would do anything for his family as he always has

Of course, he feels bad, lucid as he is he can see how they covet you, how they stress you and pull you so thin you might disappear but he cannot let you go, he hopes you forgive him.

He does pity you, is fond of you and your softer nature in the cave of monsters that lurk around for you as their sole prey and he’ll protect you as much as he can but ever since they've had you the manor has a bit lighter and they've smiled so much more he cannot truly let you go

He’ll provide everything but freedom, he'll coddle you through the transition and until he too must take his place in a grave but he begs of you to stay by his family of beasts

You're his only hope

Dadphiles Master Post

Dadphiles is a Sonic AU that diverges from the Solaris fight in Sonic 06, wherein Mephiles separates from Iblis at the last moment. In his haste, he accidentally pulls a de-aged Sonic, Shadow, and Silver all to the past with him. Now Mephiles must watch over them as they grow up if he wishes to enact his revenge… He just wasn’t expecting them to call him “Dad”.

Mephiles/Iblis/Solaris breakdown (Art): Mephiles the Mind, Iblis the Heart

The Trinity Gods of Mobius: Gaia who provides the Earth, the Master Emerald who provides life, and Solaris who provides the sun.

Mephiles' Crystals: Pieces of his power, they allow Mephiles to reach Sonic, Shadow, and Silver across time and space even with his weakened state.

The Void: A place between time, like a pocket dimension, made by Mephiles' power. It allows him to protect the children without interfering with the rest of their respective points in time. It's a place of absolute darkness and when the children enter or leave, it is in a brief plume of dark smoke.

Due to Mephiles not having the full power of Solaris (something Iblis possesses but does not have the mental capacity to use), Mephiles does not know which threats to the SSS happened in the original timeline or if they're genuine threats. Therefore, he pulls them into the Void whenever they're in danger.

Those hip to the Ash Lore might remember me trying and failing to extract something from the FLCL Collectors Disc:

Namely, a collection of screensavers - we in the 2000's boys - that came with the disc. Everything else is pretty easy to pull, but screensavers are OS-based, these were built for a 2002-era Japanese version of Windows, which is not the easiest thing to emulate these days! My attempts to do so failed.

But the Power of the Internet cannot be so easily deterred; yesterday after posting about the abandoned fanwork FLCL fighting game, god-tier hero of the internet @m-accost messaged me that it reminded them of the CD, and being the coder I am not they were able to extract the data from the .exe directly. That revealed that its actually an SWF aka Flash file, which you can just emulate with any of the extant flash players, no Japanese OS bullshit required. So they did, and now you can play the screensavers from your browser right from the Internet Archive!

Discovering the images would have been nice but honestly a bit useless - as I had guessed, its all screenshots from the show. But extracted as screensavers, they have really cool transitions, music from The Pillows Soundtrack, and fun coloring effects. The coolest are absolutely VESPA.exe, which has a chaotic tiling effect:

And MANGA.exe recreated the 'moving manga' style sequence from the show. Ironically, GIRLS.exe is the *most* boring - cashing in on the name on that one GAINAX.

Making such things accessible is of course an exceedingly tiny win, but A: any Lost Media found is good, and this was pseudo-lost media due to its inaccessibility; and B: these kind of things were way more valuable in their original context. The internet in 2002 did not have readily accessible dumps of every frame of the show, gifs of key sequences, easy downloads of whole episodes, every promotional image digitized, etc. Some of it existed in some form for savvy users, but the median person would not ever transition an episode of TV to their computer at all. As such, recreations of things like the ending credits and the moving manga sequence, even in this very different form, was for some people the most accessible way they had to put a piece of media they loved on their computer. For someone somewhere this CD was a big deal in 2002, and its great to be able to see what they saw in it.

Also fucking screensavers man, just an amazing relic of computer tech. Gotta prevent burn-in of the pixels on your cathode ray tube monitor! And if you are doing that with HARUKO.exe you have won at life.

I’m dreading the third game of Spiderman might kill off Harry :/ either he’s goblin (solo or probably along with daddy-o) and dies a la Hero Sacrifice. Or kept comatose and in the end with grim results the decision is to pull the plug on him. idk I feel Harry’s fate is doom and gloom. But they could have killed Harry at the end of this sequel giving a strong motivation for Norman to be the Goblin and hatred for Spider-Man…yet they didn’t. idk rambling thoughts. What do you think?

Personally i can see both options. I saw someone in the tags of my last headcanon post say that it wouldnt make sense to save him from death in this game only to kill him in the next. On some level i get that, why wait when you could do it now?

I have two worst case scenarios in my head:

Harry wakes up from his coma w amnesia a la the third Tobey Maguire movie. Hes unaware of Pete being Spider-Man and Peter, thinking hes protecting Harry, wont tell him. This may cause a rift in their friendship when Harry finds out - or if Norman ends up going goblin and dies - Spider-Man is to blame in Harrys eyes and he'll go after him then. To me this is a tired trope of Harry getting an intense hatred for Spidey and wanting to kill him over his father. It always felt out of character for me and i truly TRULY hope they dont go this route.

Harry becomes the Kobold. In the comics, Kobold is essentially Harrys way of making the Green Goblin a good guy. If he still wants to fight by Peters side, he'll find a way to do it. Kobold would make a lot of sense to me personally, as it kind of continues their dynamic from this game. Then at the end theres a heros sacrifice to be made and Harry goes for it despite Peters protests. This would be lazy to me too though because he essential already did the heros sacrifice in this game. Seems like theyd just want us to have more time with him to love him even more, just to make losing him hurt worse. I wouldn't put it past an intrepid writer to think they could make it work, but it just seems lazy to me.

Actual best case scenario for me though? Harry wakes up as the g-serum is being injected. Hes against being his dads experiment all over again so he runs and finds Peter. Hes not aware of his pseudo-retirement, he just goes straight to the place thats always been his safe haven; Peters home. He asks Peter to hide him from his dad. Tries to explain everything but hes exhausted and frantic. Peter agrees and they take him into hiding.

Norman, ever the expert deflector, doesnt see this as a failing on his part. Hes convinced spider-man had something to do with his son escaping so he puts out a hit on him. Hes ready, willing, and able to capture and kill at least one of the two spider-men it doesnt matter. We see him pardon Wilson Fisk for this job, and when Fisk cant do it, he has to. Normans going to go Goblin. I know it, i can feel it in my bones.

Miles asks Peter to get back in action and he does. Fisk, plus potentially Otto again, plus this brand new villain in town is too much for any one person to handle. Heres where i see Harry becoming a "Guy In The Chair" for Peter like Ganke is for Miles. Two Guys in the Chair helping the spider-men is definitely better than one. I could also see Harrys goblin powers start to emerge but he keeps pushing them down. Last time he gave into power it didnt end well for anyone.

In an effort to not write out the entire plot of the game as i see fit (because itd be long and there are so many moving pieces and characters and IDEK WHERE THEYRE GONNA PUT SILK IN-), i think if Harry does take on the cowl he'll be doing so against his father. I think i see Harry becoming Goblin/Kobold to fight against Norman and ultimately try to help Peter/Miles. This is where i see Harry either accidentally killing Norman or Norman killing his son (and of course, blaming Spider-Man)

There is also room, in my mind, to bring back Venom a la Lethal Protector/Agent Venom. But tbh if they do, i would much rather Venom go to Eddie Brock or Flash Thompson. But thats just the separate Venom Fangirl Entity within me.

Ultimately my hope of course is that Harry not die and they dont go down that all too tired and hackneyed trope of Harry growing to hate Peter dor whatever reason. I truly TRULY hope they dont go that route it is just SO tired and lazy. I want them to stay close and loving. Whatever route they go with will be SO MUCH MORE IMPACTFUL if Harry Osborn lives and doesnt make a full 180 on his best friend for no good reason.

5 Things You Can Find in my WIPs/Snippets

1. Power Imbalance

I think at the heart of a power imbalance, it's more about trust. In a healthy relationship dynamic, that trust is secured and so underneath the outer power imbalance is actual equilibrium. But when you have a power imbalance between enemies, you get a delicious uncertainty of putting your trust in someone who is just as likely to break it as not. It's a real leap of faith on the part of the protagonist and an opportunity to inspire mercy on the part of the villain. And I can't get enough of it.

2. Ruthless Antagonists

For me there is a difference between ruthlessness and outright cruelty. I love a ruthless villain who has no qualms committing cruel acts when there is a purpose. But they wouldn't be cruel just for the sake of being cruel and are perfectly capable of kindness or mercy when it doesn't clash with their goals.

3. Forced Proximity/Relationships

Because how else would you be forced to reevaluate your relationship with your enemy unless you had no other choice. I am a sucker for forced marriage because it's much more binding. Both parties are stuck with each other and they will have to find a way to make it work because the rest of their lives are on the line. No one is going anywhere. Plus I love having that clash of a situation that has built in expectations for a certain level of intimacy -- emotional or otherwise -- being shared with someone you can't trust at all.

4. Slow Burn

One of the reasons why I love enemies to lovers (when its done right) is that gradual change of their ideas about each other, which in turn gives them real reasons to love each other that isn't just "we are two people with connecting sexualities that exist in the same room as each other). Any romance I read or write needs a slow burn, a stage of relationship where they matter to each other before romance is even a factor

5. Fantasy/Historical type settings

As much as I love hero x villain when it's a superhero, so many excellent writers in this community have explored so much of it already. A lot of my ideas have started to become more centered around Hero x Villain as more of a protag/antag in fantasy or pseudo historical settings, where their powers exist outside of a superhero universe, or from being a supernatural creature, or even not having any powers at all. I still definitely write and still plan to write superhero universes, but I have also branched out a bit. I am planning on putting more snippets out in the fantasci tag on tumblr for this reason!

Poor Konner... Do He and Others Not Deserve Better Than THIS?

The fact that Kon-El aka Conner Kent aka SUPERBOY, is close to thirty years old now irl, yet has—as far as I’m aware—1. never been acknowledged by SUPERMAN as being his own flesh and blood son (but has been by LEX LUTHOR before) even at times where he did see Superman that way or wished on some level that Superman would claim him 2. been placed and left on the Kent farm multiple times now to be dealt with by them as though he were some secret, burdensome weight that needed to be dropped 3. often been passed up for the Superman mantle and rarely gotten a chance to prove himself a worthy Superman-successor (while other Superman-Franchise characters in the main timeline have and plenty of Batman-Franchise and Wonder Woman-Franchise characters have gotten to succeed Batman and Wonder Woman as well) 4. has had two different versions of himself (and one version of Jon who’s now inappropriately aged up, as well as Kon’s other dad and friends/allies) be abused, punched almost to death, indefinitely imprisoned or even outright killed, by alternate versions of Superman (something no version of LEX LUTHOR has ever even done, unless you count his brainwashing Conner that one time and being all-around horrible in DCAMU’s ROTSM) and 5. constantly been ignored, viewed as an afterthought and is hardly ever seen by Big Blue or Big Bald anymore, much less allowed to spend time with them, to the point where the situation sticks out like an infected thumb and has fans scratching their heads at the illogicality of it...makes my stomach nonstop turn, do flips, twist, convulse and cave in on itself. Why do they hate 90′s-&-Beyond!Superboy, Good-Father!Superman and their loved ones/associates so much! Why couldn’t Jon just be the younger brother of Kon and his or their father’s sidekick? And when will the actual, biological and familial connection between Kal-El, Kon-El and Alexander Luthor be recognized already?!

It wouldn’t fit every game, but instead of the kid or young adult route for Partner—what about a middle aged first stage Pokemon? With an actual kid Hero? We know from the anime that Pokémon can reach elderly status even in their first form and most need to have some battling experience to evolve. So when this thirty-forty something Pokemon finds a kid who is definitely either lost or feral, it’s awkward. Sure they’ll tag along to the nearby dungeon to help out their neighbor (Rescue Team), or teach those wannabe thieves a lesson for taking their personal treasure (Explorers), or pseudo-adopt the kid onto their retirement ventures (Gates).

Partner might not be a master dungeon crawler—really they rarely leave town and avoid mystery dungeons if they can—but they take this kid under their wing to show them the ropes. The (non-former human) Pokémon figures they can just show the younger mon about how to defend themself and how things work in towns. Partner does not expect to be conscripted into a Guild (Ex), or suddenly having a rescue team badge from doing like two errands (Rescue Team), or that the kid would drag them into mystery dungeons to build his own private land (Gates). And make no mistake, this kid who’s in their whole “I’m one of the legendary humans phase” has a vicious mind.

Hero tries everything under the sun at least once which, rightfully concerns Partner who thought wilds has a stronger sense of self-preservation. Now the fully-a-Pokémon isn’t fragile by any means, but this kid is having them exercise to a level they have never done before. Somedays. They have to leave the reigns to other team members to keep up with the kid.

I always saw Obi-Wan as an asexual kind of guy. Maybe that's because I'm old enough to remember when we only had the OT and he was already old. And dead for most of it. Anyway, part of why I love Star Wars is the emphasis on friendships and how strong and rewarding they can be without romantic feelings (although Han/Leia was my first ship). May we all have such people in our lives. All interpretations are valid of course and people love what they love, just wanted to share another point of view!

I mean, that's basically how I also envision him: my "Obi-Wan Kenobi as queer text" meta described my personal headcanon of him as biromantic asexual, and that's what the other post seemed to be hinting at in: re whatever they put in the book. After all, remember kids, ignore the exclusionists: asexuality is a full and complete queer identity on its own, and doesn't need other modifiers or qualifiers to be considered legitimate. So yeah. But as I said, he has radiated such intense bisexual sass disaster energy for the longest time, and I am frankly shocked that the Disney overlords allowed even a single sentence in a YA book that might hint at confirming this. To be honest, I don't care one way or another what the Mouse says about anything, particularly SW canon, since I reject what they have done with most of it. But hey. It's nice to have anyway.

As I also mentioned in the tags, Obi-Wan is a particularly formative character for me as a queer adult, since some of my first-ever forays into fandom, fic, and slash came as a result of reading TPM-era fics with him back in the dark days, with badly designed Web pages and SLASH!! content warnings. I imprinted on him as queer long before I knew what that was either for him or for me, and so I have a certain nostalgic perspective on it. (Also, nobody could read the Revenge of the Sith novelization in 2005, come out totally emotionally destroyed, and go, "yeah, Obi-Wan is totally straight." Even if I didn't, again, actually consciously realize this at the time.)

Likewise, Obi-Wan's appearance in the original trilogy has always fit the "celibate or asexual wise-old-mentor" stereotype, who exists mostly to guide the hero but doesn't have particular passions or motivations of his own. Then they cast Ewan McGregor as the younger version of him, and Ewan McGregor is likewise very attractive. But then in prequel-verse, all of Obi-Wan's most formative and important emotional relationships were with men (Qui-Gon, Bail Organa, etc) and then, of course, Anakin and the "it's a love story" Obi-Wan Kenobi series. So the more canon we got past just Alec Guinness, the more intensely Obi-Wan read as queer to me. The man cannot even sit straight (see his pose in the Council seat in ROTS), drops his cloaks with utter drama, sasses people, and is the utter opposite of toxic masculinity. He just has Big Queer Energy, in other words, and I felt it for a long time before I was able to properly name it in either him or myself.

Indeed, Obi-Wan would read pretty clearly as gay to me, except for the fact that they apparently added in some pseudo-girlfriend in the Clone Wars animated series and other assorted female interests in the expanded-universe books. Which, quite frankly, can't help but sound like "welp, this famous and beloved character is TOO queer-coded, better add in some comphet to tone that down." However, aside from my personal attachment to queer Obi-Wan, there's another aspect to it which I think is touching and important, and that is the fact that Luke is also often headcanoned as queer/gay/bi of some description (which Mark Hamill has enthusiastically supported). Considering that the original trilogy came out in the late '70s and early '80s, just as we were losing what should have been our entire generation of gay/queer ancestors to AIDS, I would find it very lovely if Luke, a queer man, was being mentored by Obi-Wan, his queer elder, in a way that we were so often denied the chance to have in reality. So yes. There are a lot of layers to it, in my view, and as I said, I don't care whether they bother to put one sentence in an EU book or not. The heart knows what it knows. Ahem. ;)

Potential Candidates for a MALE Elden Ring Romance Questline:

The two canonical romances available are towards women - Marika, and Ranni. In fact, the impetus of becoming Elden Lord means you're becoming Marika's consort. Plus, we have Fia, who we don't get to marry, but she offers this intimate relationship in the form of G-rated hugs. And the player is a little shoehorned into developing heavily-implied-to-be romantic feelings for Melina.

There's no explicit romance (or romance-adjacent relationships) from any of the male characters. Makes me feel a bit alienated, to be honest. Like FromSoftware is playing towards this very specific demographic.

If Elden Ring had a male 'romance questline', who would be your choice?

As of right now, White Mask Varre is probably the closest source of romantic energy we get from a male character. He's dressed in white complete with a head veil, he fights with a bouquet of roses, you first meet this guy in his pseudo-bride getup when he says you're missing a maiden, his animation of giving you the Bloody Finger is reminiscent of putting a ring on it, and he gives you a sickly sweet pet name. He's kinda like an officious parody of marriage, especially considering he's trying to stray you from the path of becoming Marika's consort. Like he's saying, "marry me instead. Join the Blood Dynasty."

Morgott The Omen King is a popular romantic choice amongst the creative fandom. Maybe even the most popular, going by the tags. Weird? Not really; he may not be conventionally attractive beyond perhaps a passing aristocratic image, but he's a tragic anti-hero with a buttery voice. He reoccurs and gives the player so much lore and context, he's the closest we have to an actual nemesis. That's prime material for a relationship with deep chemistry, folks. Plus, marrying him would potentially serve the same purpose as marrying Ranni - Morgott supplants Marika as God, and you become Elden Lord through marrying him. Or, alternatively, (as more than one artist/writer has conceptualized), YOU'D become God/ess and he Elden Lord.

Marrying Radagon probably wouldn't be that different from become Marika's consort. We still don't know the exact nature of Marika/Radagon's dual identity, but it goes to show that in-game Radagon is the current Elden Lord 'cause of his marriage, so he's your rival. We defeat him but not Marika, somehow. Well, what if it was the other way around?

Godwyn The Golden is. You know. A gross undead corpse, and Fia doesn't so much literally 'lay with' Godwyn so much as symbolically conceive a Mending rune through her freaky necro magic. And a big part of Elden Ring's lore is how golden boy Godwyn, 100% approval rate Godwyn, is dead through unjust murder. So somehow bringing Godwyn back to life would undermine a lot of the necessary tragedy of Elden Ring. Still, would it be completely out of line to take Fia's place as Godwyn's 'consort'?

Adult Miquella is another choice I see bouncing around. Come our first DLC, we see Miquella free from Mohg's cocoon and he's finally a grown man, maybe monstrously merged with some freaky moth-like features par the cocoon and Haligtree imagery. Fans of Berserk have noticed some similarities between Miquella and a certain evil god that specializes in cultivating adoration for his own kingdom. Other fans have said that Miquella was a child not just in body, but in mind as well, hence the huge treehouse where all his friends can live, a branch that makes people like him, and being overly generous towards everyone, from his sister, to his lowest soldiers. An adult Miquella with a suddenly adult brain could spell disaster. An adult Miquella who's been manipulative all this while could be even worse.

As far as the various male NPCs go, more than a couple are easy on the eyes. Rogier, D, Yura, Diallos, Blaidd, to name the more popular ones. But marriage/romance in FromSoftware games are always driven by the lore, and not by player whim. If we were to choose a male NPC along the lines of FromSoftware's previous marriage questlines, then Shabriri is the likeliest candidate. Like a consort questline alongside the Frenzied Flame ending. He even plays upon a player's supposed attachment to our Melina, so he's got a tentative hand in romantic ties. As dangerous as he is, I kinda like the idea of an immortal husband that can take the form of anybody.

Bonus: a comment on reddit brought to my attention the DILF Bernahl, whose lines can very easily be read as romantic. “The way he says ‘You... what in heavens name are you doing here?" when you first talk to him in the Volcano Manor. Could almost pass as him being somewhat protective and telling you should think very clearly about what you're doing there.” You invade two NPC with him as a cute first date. He says this upon completing his contract; "Let us thread the path of the recusant together. Till we reach the miserable death that awaits us." In the world of Elden Ring, this is the equivalent of standing outside a window blasting NSYNC.
