The Mokele-Mbembe is a dinosaur-like cryptid that is said to live amongst the trees and waters of the Congo. This creature’s name can be translated from Lingala, which is a Bantu language. The Mokele-Mbembe’s name can be interpreted as “one who stops the flow of rivers”, an example of how large and powerful the animal is said to be.

History Shorts #14: Quick Facts
Victorian Era
Tumblr media
Hat pins and canes both became popular fashion accessories during the Victorian Era. Not only were they fashionable, but became were well known vices for self defense
Don't think women were alone in wearing corsets. Men's corsets were popular for sometime too, notably in the Victorian and Edwardian Eras, but other eras and cultural periods too
Memento Mori culture was a big thing during the Victorian Era. This included a rise of mourning based culture, jewelry dedicated to the mourning and dead loved ones, wearing black, and increased curiosity in morbid media such as Gothic novels
If you were a child born to a poor family you were viewed and looked upon as a burden. In fact it was uncommon for poor children to sold, abandoned, and heavily abused in even Victorian descriptions of abuse
Victorian usually had five to six children. This was because children were still not expected to make it that far. The more you have, the higher the chance some reach adulthood. This increased in the United States.

Victorians were known to send Christmas with strange modern day meme worthy art

8. "Coffins" that cost about four to five pennies were one of the many sleeping arrangements for the poor at the time. They weren't actually coffins, but wooden boxes quite similar.
9. Taxidermy was a popular and strange fad in the Victorian times. They would taxidermy nearly anything, and sort of have them around as decorations of all different sorts. Hats, dolls, home décor, you name it. Infamously kitten girls drinking tea.

10. Victorian Era parenting is historically known to be some of the most apathetic, distant, and harsh parenting. It was culturally encouraged that minimal affection towards their own children was spoiling.

Read more about the fly agaric (Amanita muscaria) here
Hey did you guys know that the fly agaric (the red and white spotted mushroom often on human fairytale books) got its name because ancient humans used to use them as a nonlethal fly trap? Humans would put cut pieces of the mushroom into shallow dishes with milk, and the flies would come drink the milk and then get stuck TRIPPING THE FUCK OUT ON PSYCHEDELIC MUSHROOM MILK
I just find this fascinating.
