My thoughts on the race changing discourse.

What made me inclined to making this post. Well it all started with my shifter friend sending me a post earlier from another shifter on shiftok. Now I don’t associate with shiftok for many reasons that most of the shifting community avoids it. However I just wanted to share a few pointers from this post and another perspective of this discussion.

and these displays of hubris show up most in the way y'all behave when it comes to simple boundaries. the moment someone says

"hey, that's not okay," it's met with deflection, dismissal, or that tired ass excuse: "but in infinite realities, this reality's morals don't matter."

IDGAF! killing innocents is wrong! incest is wrong! race changing is wrong! pedophilia is wrong! fetishizing trauma is wrong! when you promote it, you're just showing your ass as someone who hasn't shifted because if you had? you'd have actually understood the fucking implications of coming online and ADMITTING that you, in real life, did any of these atrocities or agree with them KNOWING what it's like to live there! you'd know just how vile, insidious, and deeply unserious you sound.

Something I wanted to unpack in this particular paragraph is the comparison between each category she mentioned. However both are morally wrong. Regardless of reality you partake in and the consequences. From my own understanding of this matter, it seems there’s shifters amongst the community aren’t in a unanimous agreement with this discussion. It’s either the opposing side of shifters like this person for example.

Or it’s the side actively participating in it. For their own reasons rather it’s inherently in a harmful matter. Or In secrecy which excludes them from receiving the backlash from the opposing side. Lastly you have middle ground that doesn’t necessarily agree with race changing but doesn’t particularly have that much of an issue with it.

Now what are my own personal thoughts? where do I fall in these categories. Well I fall in the category of bias. I don’t particularly have an issue with it. However I do understand and sympathize with poc shifters and knowledge their frustration on the issue and even betrayal they might harbor for shifters who actively participate in it. Especially if it’s poc shifters. However if the shifter doesn’t fetishize the cultural aspect of it or the specific group of the marginalized group.

They are willing to educate themselves. As well as validate poc shifters that find their actions deplorable and unacceptable. It’s only right to recognize it and accept they feel that way for their own personal reasons. Other poc shifters like myself won’t exactly penalize shifters for it. In fact we might look at it from nuance perspective with the “there’s infinite realities that exist and outweigh our limitations we are the universe” approach of the argument. That’s how I genuinely look at it from that perspective. Spreading awareness about the importance of educating other shifters is completely harmless.

There are ways to go about it without aggression, arrogance and moral superiority. Because there’s also the group of shifters that might not understand the harm it’s causing. Perhaps it’s a younger adolescent, would it truly be the right approach to bombard them with profanity and hatred because they weren’t fully educated on the subject? Would that cause them to be more inclined to to be open minded and consider the feelings of the shifter that’s against race changing? Or would they simple disregard their feelings and go about it in rebellious manner because of the tone of the message?

If you truly want to educate shifters TONE matters. If you want your discomfort and concerns to be addressed. Listen to your tone of your voice and your message. Frustration is valid, betray is valid but hatred, vindictiveness and hostility isn’t.

alrof mine. but you still brought yourself there. this version of you. the one raised in a world where race impacts safety, freedom, and dignity. so when you choose to "change races", what you're really doing is sidestepping the pain of our lived experiences while cherry-picking our features for your fantasy. and you may say "no, no it's not like that"-but it is. you just refuse to open your eyes to it. and no, it doesn't matter that "it doesn't impact us here* because you coming online promoting it does. your choices are not insular. your beliefs impact this community. and spewing around your poison will get somebody burned.

so when shifters of color tell you, "please don't wear my skin. please don't romanticize an identity you've never had to survive," and you respond with, "fuck off infinite realities exist!" or "but this poc doesn't mind." you're not just being dismissive.

you're being racist.

because what you're saying is "my desire outweighs your dignity". you're saying, "¡ don't care what you've lived through-as long as I get to feel special" and if "anything is possible" why is harm the first thing you choose?

listen when i tell you this- you don't get to shift out of responsibility. you don't get to silence voices you've never taken the time to listen

because if you truly believed in the infinite nature of reality, and not just fulfilling your own fantasies, you'd have imagined a version of yourself who knew better now.

Unfortunately I’m one of the shifters that doesn’t hyper focus on what others do in their drs. Unless it doesn’t inherently have to do with murder, pedophilia, cheating on their s/o’s, backstabbing friends, committing crimes, being overall horrible people in their drs. The sad reality of it it, somebody is currently doing all the above in their drs.

There’s nothing I can do to stop them from their destructive nature and how they choose to use their abilities. I can spread awareness about it on how it’s morally wrong. As a shifter who’s been through countless of traumatic events and experiences in my dr. Including witnessing my s/o getting brutally murdered in another reality. I can’t stop shifters from scripting traumatic events in their drs. I can truly only worry about myself and my own shifting journey. As much I want to and have continued spreading awareness about it in separate shifting platforms. It’s up to that individual to take it into consideration, if they choose not to I’m not going to berate them for it.

Because that was their own decision with their own consequences as a result of it. My point is every single decision we make during our shifting journey is a learning lesson, none of us are perfect we all make mistakes. We don’t deserve to be penalized and perceived as such unless it’s truly deserves that kind of response. Everyone is on this journey like the original shifter of this post. There’s no harm in educating people who maybe uneducated, if you can’t educate the ones that refuse to be informed then don’t associate with them. Don’t waste your energy on them. Educate those who truly have that empathy and compassion for those who want their voice to be heard.

That’s all I wanted to say on the matter.

But I like to know anyone else’s thoughts on it rather you are anti race changing, race changer yourself or simply meet in the biased category of this discussion.

I’ll just add this, but after pulling the story of underdogs as “we don’t have the fastest car” that Lando even reinforced recently in an interview, after trying to paint redbull as cheaters (which isn’t the case) to show themselves more legitimate (when the actual cheating was done by McLaren, or I guess “loophole”, but that still led to them having to change all of this rear wings, for those who still don’t know about it), now the discourse of the fia is biased toward Max and helping him! is coming out.

Of course that’s how any team can try to win the support of the public, but don’t come talking about dirty tactics when your team is using it.

re: lando norris, starbucks, F1 and boycotts

the first rule of Formula 1 is understanding these privileged men do not give a shit. they partake in the most elite sport there is, where only 20 people can do it at a time. it's a bubble of money and luxury they thrive whitin.

just don't put anyone on a pedestal or your hand on fire for any of them. not even the ones that seem like the good ones.

personally, I expect the bare minimum of no homophobia, no racism, no sexual misconduct or assault. but I do not expect them to care about world problems as strongly as we do. bc if all went to shits they will run to a safe mansion, and we'll be the ones left to survive.

embrace fandom and friendships, the fun of the races and the drama, sharing gifs and fics and edits, and put THAT above your favorite driver!

how do i say this without getting jumped....... i do think the movies miss something in not emphasising the racial/ethnic divisions in district 12 but i also don't understand people who constantly claim that any description of "olive skin" means non-white person.

Everytime I see your Pat lolcalization posts, I can't help but think if this is him overcompensating for voicing the character of n*zi germany in the first seasons of the hetalia anime.

I can't say and I'd rather not say anything about Pat's intent or own agenda or whatever -

But the interesting "lolcalisation changes" and direction give to VAs really seem to favour a certain reading of the events happening in FE16 and to this day, I still can't understand how that managed to be released without getting at least some flak.

Sure Fates' lolcalisation is a tough nut to beat and nothing comes quite close to what happened to Fates to FE16/Nopes, and yet I wish I am joking when I say nearly 80% of the lines involving Supreme Leader and/or Rhea/the CoS should be double checked, because "Dany expy bringing a revolution" has to fit in the story that is FE16, and that's talking about the washed down version of Dany some people have and not the one who uses violence for the greater good, until she starts to realise that the "greater good" is as solid as smoke and runs away from the - well-intentioned ! - mess she created.

Again, I don't think anything was malicious with the lolcalisation Fodlan got, is it just a case of misunderstanding the game and slapping archetypes and "trendy notions" to make this "strange" game sell like hotcakes in your home market?

Or is it another case of "think of the children Susan" where Susan sure as hell can't endorse a character presented as the heroine sprout disgusting things and advocate for imperialism 101 so the heroine is now rewritten?

Or is it the lolcalisation team - after looking at the jp script - try to make the general idea of "you must feel bad for this character" somehow work, because they thought no one would seriously want to walk with her and feel any sort of sad uwus for the "you have pointy ears, you cannot rule over humans" red emperor? So they modified the script and directed the VA accordingly ?

IDK, but I think if you've been long enough on this blog you know my stance on localisation and lolcalisation but this discrepency between the two versions (or at least two audios) really took me by surprise when the game was released in 2019 lol

u r sooo right about the red team blue team rivalry which is also what I thought about the aesthetics of some pictures of fabio q vs pecco in the last title fight races of 2021. pecco was so unsure back then and fabio had more natural talent and gumption and pecco seemed nervous and fabio seemed like he was having a good time and they made for good a narrative in their blue and red leathers.

we have only had four title fights this century between a blue team and a red team! and even that is me being generous by including 2007 - which imo counts because casey had to outscore valentino not dani at motegi to clinch the title and dani only nicked second in the championship off valentino at valencia. so yeah, four title fights: 2007, 2008, 2021, 2022. just isn't good enough

I will say by the END of 2021 pecco had mostly finished finding his feet and was winning a bunch of races, whereas fabio was less self-assured and more going 'yeah this title is nice but... uh...? guys we might be a bit fucked?' but. yeah. aesthetically their title fights were nice vibes! I was totally pro that rivalry conceptually! in practise, these aesthetics were let down somewhat by the absence of this little thing I like to call 'actually fighting on-track', which as a traditionally-minded viewer I do on occasion like to see in my title fights. like, valentino and casey's whole rivalry aesthetic was enhanced by how you have cool shots of them actually being, y'know, in the same shot

a selection from some of my favourite on-track battles of theirs during the time they were at ducati and yamaha respectively (minus assen 2007 + phillip island 2009 for obvious reasons). very nice distinct colour scheme, colours really popped, we know casey was paying attention to luminous yellow covering things and it's symbolically neat that one of 'valentino's colours' is on casey's bike (no, I do not care about what the australian flag looks like and indeed refuse to acknowledge the existence of 'australia'). also generally liked their helmets during that era, strong stuff all round

I've been thinking a fair bit lately about how this era compares to the other era this century that is generally associated with poor quality of racing, aka the alien era. the word that is commonly associated with those few years is 'processional', not unfairly... I think a refrain I see quite commonly is that some fans still have too much nostalgia for the alien era because they're only thinking of the laguna 2008's and catalunya 2009's of this world, not all the many many races of that era that weren't laguna 2008 or catalunya 2009. which is true! my general take is that the average race quality these last few years has been higher and there's often something interesting happening somewhere - you don't get the abysmal lows of the alien era quite so often. on the flip side, while the alien era certainly is associated with technical regulations that produced some poor racing... well, it did seem to at least be possible when all the stars aligned to have a duel that lasted for more than three corners. that used to be a thing even in the alien era. like it did happen

as much as I find the alien era deeply frustrating and agree with the general point that race quality these days doesn't plummet quite the same depths, I also think you need those highlights!! just to give people stuff to remember seasons by, stuff that lives on in years to come because it was just such a foundational cool memory. the current dearth isn't primarily the fault of the riders, but we have been pretty short on outright classics since end of 2019 - and the ones we have had tend to be more in the dogfight category of the typical phillip island mould than the race long duel. my sense is the current formula makes these even more impossible than 800cc did, which also weren't conducive to duels but at least didn't have this infernal tyre pressure crap week in week out that makes it impossible for riders to follow each other closely. also does feel like one of the real issues with increased homogeneity between the bikes... like casey/vale was kinda the motorcycling rivalry for babies because you knew that casey would have the edge in the straights and valentino would have the edge in the twisty bits. now a bike like the current ducati just has a way more balanced performance profile, and that's what everyone else is chasing. which. y'know. harder to be doing dramatic duels if you're all good in the same places

anyway, the point is that fabio and pecco had all the ingredients for a perfectly enjoyable rivalry... fabio as the more precocious one but also by 2021 a somewhat steadier performer, pecco cerebral but also volatile, self-critical to a fault. pecco's actually someone who I'd kill to see in a better version of this sport just for a bit, seeing as one of his biggest strengths as a rider is how excellent he is at defending - which would be nice to see tested more in races where that like... actually matters. they're both a little bit too nice and non-confrontational for my tastes, like you kinda worry any rivalry between them is destined to just be quite friendly, but there was still enough contrast in personalities and approaches to theoretically generate intrigue. plus, obviously, most importantly - they did have a red and blue colour scheme

while I'm generally a fan of dark colour schemes, I do feel like the white of the fiat yamaha era did allow the blue to pop a little more. and maybe it would've helped if the red had been a bit brighter to provide more contrast - I like both of these designs on their own, but together they do look a tad bleak. also my god have these bikes become massive

unfortunately, however, it comes back to the lack of memorable on-track battles. 2021 and 2022 were both kinda weird years, with pecco not really establishing himself as The Title Rival until quite late into 2021, and then 2022 being... y'know, a truly bizarre experience. they were never really good at the same time! didn't ever really hash it out for the win! even when they came close, like jerez/mugello 2022, it wasn't all that much of a fight... it's a shame - we know they're both theoretically capable of perfectly compelling on-track battles, they just never really did it with each other. pecco's had more good fights with jorge than with fabio, and that's also not exactly happening at the rate I'd like

in conclusion. it is time to bring back red vs blue sports contests. let us return to this

and the only way to do that? well, that would be for the blue team to get its act together

My mom is also really REALLY chill about plurality, and she also sees me and Seán and everyone else as different people but all like, her family. I was sorta worried she'd love the core more than us but she loves all all equally!!!

Our core has finally been able to get herself into headspace instead of just being dormant when she's not fronting, which also means she can front more. Bad idea: Age gap discourse but in a fantasy land where there's multiple races who have vastly different lifespans and life styles.

Is it wrong for a 27 year old human to date a 140 year old stone elf, considering most stone elves don't get out of diapers till their 30s?

Is it wrong for a 80 year old dwarf to date a two year old fire wisp, when fire wisps only live up to 5 years (between the eruptions) and have memories of their past lives, so in a way they're "born" at age 400,000+? That octogenarian dwarf is way younger than the fire wisp that's only physically younger than some of the socks the dwarf has!

Is it wrong for a chronomancer who was never born to date, well, anyone? They are zero years old and infinity years old and negative one hundred and seventeen years old all at once. They look like an old human, sure, with the long white beard and the wrinkly skin, but as far as anyone can tell, they've always looked like that. We've seen the cave paintings.

Is it wrong for a 30 year old lizardman (that's old in lizardman years) to date a human who is 60 years old in biological years (because of aging spells), 26 years old in lived-experience years, but only 13 years old in calendar years? (ie, they were born 13 years ago, but spent some of that time in sideways timelines, so they've lived more years than have passed in their home timeline?)

Is it wrong for a 12,000 year old dragon date a pile of 400 kobolds when kobolds only live like 10 years on average, but reach full maturity in one year? And if you disagree, can you do anything about it? You do know what happened to the last policeman who tried to arrest a dragon, right? Their city is still smoldering, 50 years later.

Is it wrong for anyone to date the time worm? It's the same age, every year. So the age gap can only intensify. If you start dating the time worm when you're both the same age, when do you break it off because you've become too much older than them?

And most confusing of all... What about the fairies? They could be anything between a thousand and a day old, they would lie about their age either way, and they can look like whatever they want. There's fairies we know for a fact have been around since the founding of The City of Towers, who met the silent mother herself, and also look like they're at most ten years old. Is it wrong to date them, or just really uncomfortable for everyone who sees it? And on the other side there's fairies who are "born" (hatched? They come from plants, I'm not sure what the verb even would be. Seeded? Sprouted, maybe) this week who are already appearing like middle-aged men and dancing with widows in what looks like a scheme to run off with her fortune but they never take the money, because what would a fairy want with worthless metal discs? Maybe fairies have a hive mind or genetic memory or reincarnation with full memories, they'd never tell you or give you a straight (or consistent) answer anyway.

Stonefolk are really the only inter-race dating situation anyone can agree on. They're unthinking & unmoving solid rock during the day, so those hours don't count. Thus their "real age" is a nice even half of their true age. So if you meet a stonefolk who was dug out 30 years ago, watch out: that's a 15 year old, and if you're a 25 year human, that's too young for you, even though their dig-date is five years before your birth-date.

"He was posting stories and having fun in Madrid while YN was literally crying at her own party," reveals a source close to the singer. "Everyone was asking where he was, and she kept making excuses until she couldn't anymore."

I am quite frankly, very tired of seeing posts complaining about ‘hood’ Y/Ns and all of you coming out of the woodwork to proclaim that you don’t act this way and it’s disgusting to act this way and you hate fics where the reader wears wigs or acrylics or says the N-word and how all of these are just an inaccurate representation of our community. this is just very coon like behavior and is giving pick me.

yall know very well that fics including black women didn’t even exist until very recently. i’m grateful for every fic written whether it’s bad or good. either way they are contributing to the growth of a very niche community and helping establishing our presence here on this app. i’ve been on this app for like 12 years and I remember in the very early days when fics first started including black mc’s. no matter how the black mc was represented there would still be people in the mentions/comments like ‘eww gross you n***** why did you write this?’ or ‘this fic is so good but why is she black?’. we were quite literally fighting for our right to exist on this app.

hood culture is, like it or not, a big part of the black community and it’s not all negative. it’s a cultural movement that spawned from us being barred from white spaces and seen as the ‘inferior’ race no matter how we presented ourselves. hood girls deserve to see themselves in fiction just like everyone else. they deserve love without the implication that they need to imitate others/change themselves to seem more ‘civilized’. they aren’t bad people just because you don’t share the same style, vocab, interests and hobbies as they do.

whenever you bring this up you are giving non black people a free pass to insert themselves and say ‘yes omg so ghetto’. there are enough people against us. i would never help facilitate a conversation which further criticizes our community. especially when it’s related to very real people whose experiences you are trying to devalue.

Kageyama's backstory only being revealed near the very end of the series is really interesting from a meta perspective.

For reference, his chapter is 387 out of 402. That's 96% of the way in.

To contrast, other characters like Tsukishima and Yamaguchi's backstories are shown in Chapters 87-88.

Now, we do get the explanation for his "King of the Court" title in Chapter 6, at the start of the series, but we don't see how he got to that point, or why he started playing volleyball in the first place like Tsukishima's and Yamaguchi's stories show.

It creates this situation where, despite being the deuteragonist, the character our protagonist, Hinata, is practically glued to the entire series, we barely know anything about him.

We don't even know he has a sister until that point whereas other characters' siblings like Natsu, Saeko, Akiteru, Alisa have all made appearances way before then. Even Oikawa's sister, though we don't see her, we at least know she exists because of Takeru.

He's both closed off to us (the audience) as well as the other characters in the series, and this results in them finding him rude or disliking his character in general (see: the "Kageyama is abusive" discourse that somehow keeps popping up even now).

Chapter 387 takes place in 2018 and was published in 2020 so it takes him 6 years of in-universe time and 8 years of irl time to really open up.

And the catalyst for all of this is Hinata fulfilling his promise of beating him.

You see, another thing to note is that, whenever Hinata thinks of Kageyama, he's always looking at him from behind.

His internal image of him is someone who's always up ahead, someone he needs to catch up to, meaning Hinata can only see one side of him, he cannot see all of Kageyama until he catches up and passes him.

Which he finally does here.

In this shot Hinata is finally the one who's looking back at Kageyama. At this moment, Hinata (and by extension the audience) can see him for all he is, can see how he was just a lonely boy who's been waiting for someone to meet him where he is, to keep running alongside him and not quit the race.

Someone he doesn't have to go easy on. Someone who would actually tell him to hurry up instead of slow down for a change.

His someone better.

A Postcolonial analysis of Marius

(Disclaimer: This is not me trying to fight with anyone, this is just my own analysis of Marius. He’s an extremely complex and difficult character and so I have a lot of thoughts about him. I don’t 100% hate or like Marius. But more importantly, I don’t make moral judgements about how OTHER people feel about Marius because at the end of the day these are fictional characters.)

I think a big part of what I am going to call the Marius Problem (which I am not gonna take pains to describe here bc iykyk) is that Anne herself didn’t really seem to see a huge problem with him, and that affects his portrayal in the narrative.

There is of course the obvious way he treats Armand, and anyone who is familiar with Anne’s corpus of work knows that that relationship dynamic is something she revisits a lot and often in the context of erotica which is like a whole other bag of worms but…

The thing I feel like we don’t really talk about with Marius enough is his very Western Eurocentric view of the world. From a postcolonial perspective Marius’s philosophy is deeply unsettling. The way he polarizes the “east” and “west” and the modern and medieval, reason and superstition, are very insidious ways of defining things, as is his idolization of the Enlightenment, which was at its heart a positivist, Eurocentric, and deeply prejudiced school of thought which managed to convince the world that social constructions like race and gender were “scientific” in nature.

Marius is basically the embodiment of imperialism, not because he’s some malicious Big Brother twirling his moustache but because he is a very powerful, very privileged, and deeply misguided man who is takes his experience of the world as a universal truth, and who mistakes his own subjective feelings and desires for objective morality.

One of his greatest crimes against Armand that no one talks about is that he tries to force him to conform to a culture that goes against Armand’s own nature and history, and discounts Armand’s view of the world as fundamentally flawed and wrong just because it doesn’t align with his. In the book the conflict of ideologies is between classical humanism (Marius) and Eastern Orthodoxy and mysticism (Armand). In QotD, Marius even laments his failure to “perfect” Armand. Even as he showers them with gifts and affection, Marius treats Armand, Pandora, and even Akasha like dolls. Due to the changes made to Armand’s character in the show, I imagine the dissonance will be even more intense and the suppression of Armand’s selfhood will feel even more disturbing, because it will register on the level of race as well as other forms of identity.

But regardless, the most difficult part of this is that Marius is not doing this out of malice. Marius genuinely thinks he’s doing the right thing. He thinks he’s helping Armand. He thinks he is liberating the subaltern subject from the dark shadows of superstition and oppression. He thinks he is educating a being who must not know his own self and his own rights because he is fundamentally ignorant. He does not realize that what he is trying to do is efface the Other and absorb it into himself. And he eventually abandons Armand, in part, I think, because of his failure to succeed at this mission, and so facing Armand means facing the Other in himself which he wishes to repress to be the ideal enlightened western man. Marius is not even aware of his own need to dominate.

(But please please remember that Marius’s need to dominate is not likewise reflected by a need to be subjugated in Armand. Armand is equally able to move in spheres of dominance as well as submission because Armand does understand much of what Marius does not about the nature of power. Marius does not have this kind of mobility.)

This is at the heart of imperial discourse. This is what gives it momentum, what immortalizes it— the idea that we (the West) occupy some moral high ground from which we can liberate and speak for the subaltern subjects which we ourselves have locked into oppression and victimhood.

And sadly, I don’t think Anne wrote all this into the books consciously. She herself said in an interview that her own philosophy of the world aligns more with Marius’s than with Armand’s, and I think that is part of why Marius is a fundamentally sympathetic character. She made him that way. And I don’t necessarily blame her for it because these kinds of discourses are epistemological and extremely tricky to parse out. Power is that which we cannot name. So yeah, I don’t think Anne was intentional or malicious in it either.

And I don’t think all of us who look at Marius and probably feel somewhere deep down to be like him, to have his power, are doing it because of a fundamental flaw in their humanity or their politics. It’s a flaw in the epistemological system, and I don’t think it’s a flaw anyone can really see unless they’re the Armands in that equation, or they’ve been extensively trained to see it.

And before anyone gets defensive, this is not an attack on anyone or a criticism of any individual. It is a criticism of a system of knowledge and knowing which we likely cannot escape. And it is also a call for people to look at this story differently than they might have before. A call for lovers of Marius to try to begin to understand things from Armand’s perspective, and a call for lovers of Armand to remember that he is far more than just a victim, and that it would be very dangerous and reductive and harmful to his existence as an autonomous subject to understand him in that way. And if you feel the same as I do about these things, please talk about it, don’t get stuck in the surface level dynamics of the Armand/Marius relationship.
