Description - Book types and tropes I think various bsd characters would enjoy. These are just some of my opinions, if you feel I've incorrectly characterized any of them please tell me! Also, this is based off of the main storyline, I haven't read Stormbringer, 55 Minutes, etc yet.

Atsushi Nakajima ☆

╰┈➤ Comic books, found family, childhood friends to lovers ☑

I feel like these are a no brainer, but I think Atsushi, if given the chance to read them as a child, would have really liked comics and grown up with them. I think he would like super hero/action stories. Specifically because of the Odasaku-Man show/series/franchise in BSD Wan. He'd probably enjoy DC, Marvel, The Avengers, etc.

Atsushi, to me at least, seems like the type of person to really want to connect to whatever he's reading and be moved by it. I think found family is probably a big thing for him because of Dazai bringing him into the agency and all. I think he likes sentimental and happier story lines that can make you cry solely because they have to end at some point.

Atsushi would probably like to watch the characters grow up together, probably torn apart by some unforseen event and eventually rekindling. Like I said, I think he would really like sentimental stuff, and seeing people rejoice and fall in love is probably really heart warming to him.

Osamu Dazai ☆

To be honest, I feel like if Dazai were to sit and read anything, it would most likely be a poem. I don't think Dazai is the type of guy to analyze poetry for fun, but I think he has a subconscious habit of doing it. Either he's pretty into it or he's skimming through it and tossing it to the side the second he's bored.

If I had to pick a romance trope that Dazai would like, I do think it'd be soulmates. Or maybe like, right person wrong time. I think he would like the angst of it should the book take a turn and end in tragedy, or he might also enjoy a fulfilling and satisfying ending. I think he likes the idea of two people being destined to be together, one soul two bodies type thing, you know? ;]

I think he likes major plot twists but only if they catch him off guard,which is probably pretty rare. He likes the feeling of surprise when a book takes an unexpected turn.

Doppo Kunikida ☆

Kunikida likes slow burn because it's something he can read through for a while. I think he likes trilogies and series, especially if he really enjoys the storyline and characters. He probably likes the reliability of being able to pick the same thing up for a while after dealing with whatever nonsense takes place at the agency.

I think he likes reading about things that he has at the very least surface level knowledge about. He likes when authors stay true to the actual events while creating a storyline around it. Like, for example, a love story that takes place between two soldiers in a war. So long as it stays true to the actual events, I think he would read it.

Edogawa Ranpo ☆

╰┈➤ The "Chosen One", Found Family ☑

Ranpo definitely has a hard time finding books that he'll actually enjoy. I can't remember if he said he did or didn't like mystery books though because they were to easy for him to solve? I don't remember, so I'm not gonna include mystery books for him. I think he would really like books where the main character is a "Chosen One" though. I don't really know why, it just seems like the type of story he'd sit through while simultaneously making fun of it.

"This guy thinks he's so special all because he can ____! I can do that too."

I think he'd also like found family because, like Atsushi, he found his family in the detective agency. He and Yosano are like sister and brother and Fukuzawa is like his father. I think they would have a special place in his heart for sure.

Yosano Akiko ☆

╰┈➤ Bad Girl/Good Boy, one of us is famous ☑

I think Yosano would feel as though the good girl/bad boy trope is way over done. She would probably be happy to see it switched up once in a while. I think she really likes the contrast of the two types of personalities and characters, but she also wants to see the characters be smart rather than immature or stupid. She probably wouldn't want to read the same stereotypical "Character A trips and falls, landing right on top of Character B." She likes when stories can stand out and be unique.

She also probably like the idea of one of the characters in the relationship being able to uphold themselves without their partner, that independence seems like something she'd find interesting to read. I think she would really take interest in the plot and how it could come out, maybe angsty because of the famous ones busy schedule? Maybe it ends with the famous one's career coming to retirement because they felt it's more important to make time for their partner? I think she'd find all of the possibilities interesting.

Ryunosuke Akutagawa ☆

╰┈➤ "I hate everyone in the world but you", childhood friends to lovers, nonfiction ☑

Honestly, I have like, a big list of tropes in front of me and it was really hard to pick for him because none of them really seemed very him to me. If you catch him reading a romance book though, it's probably "I hate everyone but you" or childhood friends to lovers. I think they could both go hand in hand for him. The "I hate everyone but you" trope reminds me of like, only being able to trust this one person thoroughly. Trust like that is gained through years of companionship such as childhood friendships into adolescence and adulthood. I think his childhood probably would have an effect on this preference.

"We've already been together so long, you know me and I know you and there is trust. Why would I ever want to start all that over?" Type of thing.

While I think he doesn't mind fiction occasionally, I think he prefers to read about real things. It's more serious.

Nakahara Chuuya ☆

╰┈➤ Workplace romance, second chance romance, secret romance ☑

Chuuya seems like the type of guy to like romance and moderate thrill, so I think he leans towards romance stories that could build up suspense or get the characters into a little bit of trouble. As for office romance, I think he likes the idea of falling in love with someone in a place he kind of has to be every day, that person making his day better. It also means he would get to be close to his s/o and I think he'd knowing that they're okay, which is why I think he'd like that trope. The thrilling part is that maybe it's against a code of conduct in the office? Maybe they get caught dating, what happens after that?

Second chance romance to me is exciting because you get to see characters learn and grow from their mistakes, and I think Chuuya finds acknowledgement on wrongdoings really important. But characters might also mess up again, which is always interesting to watch go down.

Secret romance is self explanatory on the thrill factor. It can give you so many questions that are most likely answered in the book itself, like why is it a secret?

(I also think he enjoys super hero comics but wouldn't admit it in fear of being called immature because of that Odasaku-Man scene in bsd wan)

Ichiyō Higuchi ☆

╰┈➤ Workplace romance, YA rom-com, bad boy/good girl ☑

She definitely likes the idea of workplace romance because of her massive little crush on Akutagawa. Like Chuuya I think she'd like the idea of being around your s/o even while having to work, whether the work is boring or not. I think her crush also influences the bad boy/good girl thing, although I don't know if I'd call her a good girl. I think she would like to consider herself a good girl.

YA rom-com also seems like her thing, like she would read it while laying in her stomach, kicking her feet, twirling her hair, and giggling.

Fyodor Dostoevsky ☆

Oh boy. He doesn't even get tropes, I don't think he'd read fiction. I do think he'd read philosophy books though, like he's probably read up on Confusious and Aristotle or something like that. Even if he doesn't agree with the philosopher he's reading about, I think he'd find it interesting.

He definitely appreciates poetry, HE'S the type of guy to analyze it in his free time. I think he'd find poetry beautiful when done right.

Because the real Dostoevsky grew up poor, I think bsd Dostoevsky has an appreciation for books written about struggles an author has faced. Fyodors past hasn't been mentioned in the main storyline of bsd atleast, so I'm just going assume he grew up poor until other information comes out. I think hearing about other people facing the same thing he did in childhood might give him a sense of humanity. He said during his "happy group counseling hour" that only he and Dazai could understand each other because of their levels of intelligence. Maybe seeing other people having something in common with him would be something he would like.

Nikolai Gogol ☆

Nikolai doesn't seem like the type to read a lot, but because of his ideology associated with freedom, I think he'd like books with a strong lead character. I don't think he'd like books with main characters that rely heavily on other people or have a bland personality outside of their significant other. He'd like characters that solve their own problems and obtain their own goals.

Sigma ☆

I think Sigma reads like, the people magazine so he can understand what's going on in pop culture and have some knowledge of what's going on. He probably likes knowing what's trending. I think he'd also like the "Home Decor" sections of the magazines or like the scratch and sniff parts. I don't know why, I just do.

He'd also probably read cookbooks occasionally and memorize recipes when he's not memorizing every detail about his customers.

I think Sigma would find romance stories endearing, specifically friends to lovers. Kind of similar to Akutagawas, I think he would like the idea of already having that trust built through friendship. Because Sigma is so naive and how much he's been used, he likes reading about characters who already have a good friendship that is built on reliability and trust. That friendship turning into a romance eventually.

Me:He felt guilty but he had to supress his emotions in order to keep ada safe, basically what this post has said.

Also me:lmao that mf does not give a single fuck his eyes were white as hell when he said he doesnt want to save atsushi.He only knew Atsushi for like a few days,sacrificing him for ada's peace sounds fair.

(i also seen your ask with a post linked i’ll read it and give my opinion on that after!!)

i have a couple ways i can interpret it but let me grab the panels first.

before i start here i will re-emphasize his eyes are white here. he had no malicious intent with this and was doing what he believed was right. he also looked concerned.

first idea: he knew atsushi would be fine. he had thought it through and figured things would turn out. there’s also a chance he figured he would get to the case after and didn’t want to mess up his order or ongoing work.

second idea (and the one i personally believe in): ranpo knows it’s a bad idea and doesn’t have the emotional implication the others did. tanizaki was the one who pressured on finding atsushi if i recall correctly but ranpo and kunikida protested (mostly ranpo).

i believe ranpo is the type to be logical in any solution instead of letting emotions get to him. he seen the right path and wanted to follow it. he likely wasn’t bothered by this and figured things would turn out and wanted to prioritize the rest of his work.

i also see ranpo as a low-empathy person. another example of this is when he said he doesn’t care about kunikida’s guilt and was helping because it was what he believed was right and avenged the girl that died because of his false deduction.

i believe in the anime he straight up says he doesn’t care about kunikida’s internal turmoil however it would be a pain to check right now so i may be slightly off with the wording.

anyway. i believe ranpo uses logic over emotions when it comes to strategy and wanting to approach things. i believe he also doesn’t empathize with people as much as others do which is why he thinks that way.

he might have not felt the worry or fear everyone else had for atsushi. he also barely knew the guy so there probably wasn’t much of an established friendship between the two yet.

trailing off a little, i love how bsd gives traits to good characters that aren’t often seen in a positive light in other media. i very rarely see someone who doesn’t empathize much portrayed in a good way; so it’s nice and maybe even a bit de-stigmatizing to see characters like ranpo be shown as a hero. i like that a lot.

BSD 108 – Will DoA arc be like Avengers Infinity War & Endgame?

Hello~~~

Omg this chapter was sooo delicious – me Fyodor stan having time of my life xD His performance and his final words mocking Sigma was 10000/10 – he is truly fascinating and complex villain, I love him xD

OK, let’s get serious XDD

For some time I was wondering how Asagiri intends to finish this arc... Everything indicate that it will end soon, but at the same time given how OP Fukuchi and Fyodor are in their respective fields – some deus ex machina for ADA to win would be unsatisfactory to me honestly. Initially I thought that Bram or Aku will take over and regain control of all vampires and stop Fukuchi, but… after this chapter looks like there is no time for that xD

So I think DOA’s plan won’t be stopped at all, but they will achieve what they want just like Thanos in Avengers Infinity War.

By this I mean that DOA will succeed and create temporary reality – first using One Order to destabilize current world and then using the Book to create new one without abilities. Symbolically, destruction and rebirth always go hand in hand and you can’t have one without another.

Then we will get time skip and Endgame equivalent – our characters living in new world and getting that something is wrong and need to be changed. Maybe reality without abilities would not be so peaceful, who would have guessed that xD Also maybe there will be some rip-off effect of changing reality or some enemy will appear, who guards canon timeline xD Possibilities are endless – it just depends on what Asagiri has in mind and what story he wants to tell.

After all, the core of the story is that abilities are not source of evil and are just part of everyone’s self as projection of fear/greed/anger/and so on. Though world without abilities would be tempting to some characters, which abilities were partly source of suffering - like to Atsushi, who was hesitating whether DOA plan should be stopped. But still, negative traits are still part of everybody and they just need to be balanced by good ones and choices to be better person.

Other random thoughts related to chapter:

Fyodor’s seizure to words ‘help me’ didn’t look fake and it reminded me of how N tried to take control of Verlaine in SB. But I guess it was just temporary and Fyodor regained control and used it to fool Sigma. Ofc it can be that he faked all - we will see if there is more to it or not. Btw I still believe that Fyodor’s backstory is akin to Verlaine or Chuuya – that he was tampered artificially by military to get powerful ability and he started to resent world and abilities because of that. Personality disorder would be indeed cliché and it was already done once in 55 Minutes LN, so I hope that Asagiri has something more interesting for Fyodor in store.

Gogol where are you 👀 I wonder if he is author of the note and that he simply wanted to sabotage Fyodor xD he is character with much potential, I hope he wasn’t just in this arc to set up duel between Dazai and Fyodor in this arc

Me Bram confusion😵 previous chapter pretty set up Bram rejecting passivity and trying to fight for Aya’s future. But this one kinda backed out of this, so I am not really sure where his arc is leading to for now xD but maybe some heroic act later on

Though depending on how things will go - self-sacrifice will suit Fukuchi or Mori too as a way to undo their wrongdoings. Again, possibilities are endless.

Fukuzawa’s state – still I would say it is 50/50 given how healing abilities work whether Asagiri needs character to live or not. Nonetheless, I was expecting his death for a while and it is more plausible option for story sake – Ranpo just needs some character development and Asagiri often use mentor’s death for that. Imo Kunikida as next ADA director was red herring and Ranpo fits better for that role given Agency’s orgin.

Btw i don’t think Sigma will die.

Ofc, it is just speculation and I am not 100% sure that story will go that way, since BSD tends to be so unpredictable. But imo Asagiri didn’t recently mention for no reason that he was inspired by Avengers and that ideally he wants one more season for anime too xD

A/N : i have completed the anime and reading the manga, waiting for chapter 102, im in the bsd fandom as well, so why not? rewatched episode 5 all over again for this.

the first time he met you he was like.. "pshhhhh, them? better than me?" he said, sara scoffing after what he just said.

"yes, better than you. do you wanna see them solving cases?" she asked, folding her arms together. the male clicked his tongue, removing his feet from his office desk. "sure, i hope they don't waste my time."

you closed your eyes, "well, this wonderful detective will avenge her, right, y/n?!" one of your friends pointed to you.

"but i still actually have to accept the case." you said bluntly, putting your hands in your hips. "eh? why not?"

you raised one eyebrow, "ask this man." you said, pointing at the male with dark purple hair, with beauty marks under his eyes.

"why do we need a new detective?! i'm right here!? plus, i'm much more superior than a private detective like you!" he argued.

you turned around. "you! what's your name!" you asked— more like demanded, pointing at one of their colleagues. "huh?! im officer sugimoto! the victim, ms. yamagiwa, was my colleague!" he shrieked.

"alright, sugimoto! solve this case in 60 seconds, starting now!" you said, still with your eyes closed while turning patting one of his shoulders. "eh?!"

"i can solve this case in under 60 seconds, if you're as good as he claims, you can do it too." your aura darkening slightly. "well them sugimoto, give it a try!"

he started panicking, "well, 60 seconds is a bit too crazy!" you held a old stop watch in your hands, "you have 50 seconds left!" you said, with a smile.

you got closer to the male who was trying to solve it, as he started explaining. "wrong!" one of your friends said, as they started explaining as well.

"shooting two more bullets to disguise themselves?" heizou asked, putting his hand to his chin, thinking. "BOO! time is up! too bad. you've got ways to go to get to my level!" you exclaimed, patting his head as you tried comforting the sugimoto.

"this proves that none of your colleague's are not at all superior to me." you said, turning slowly to the boy with the dark purple hair. grinning.

he snapped, "stop messing with this! you've been going on about deductions and great detectives! too much pulp fiction!" ur pulp fiction

"ha? you still don't get it?" you mocked him, getting close to his face, turning a dark shade of red. "great detectives don't need investigating! my ability, super deduction, can easily identify the killer, or someone who's proven and truly guilty." you took a deep breath.

"—as well as when and how the murder got committed. further more, i can see, in my mind, how to make the killer confess and where the evidence is." you said, backing away.

"but with such a convenient ability, you don't need us right?!" he asked, "yess! you've finally caught on!" trying to piss him off.

"you bastard—!" your friends cut him off. "now, detective, y/n, they're always like this! they said, standing in front of you.

you bent down slightly to see his reaction, "after all, my personal motto is; if i'm well, then all is well!" you said, standing straight up, one of your hands palms facing the ground from a certain angle, with the other hand on your waist.

"since you're so confident, how about you do the case?!" the males hands shaped into fists, ready to throw hands. "oh? is that a request to make me take the case? should've said so in the first place."

he scoffed, "despite the lack of evidence, you seem full of confidence, want me to count to 60?" crossing his arms, smuggly all while grinning.

you smirked, "i don't need that much time." you pulled out your glasses from one of the pockets in your shirt, as you put them on. ability ; super deduction!

"i see." you said, fixing your glasses so it's actually straight. "oh, please. so you're saying you know who the killer is?" you smiled, "of course."

"huh?" you pointed at sugimoto, facing him. "you. that's right.. the criminal is.. you, sugimoto."

"hahahaha!" heizou let out a hearty laugh. "officer sugimoto is my colleague!" putting his hands from his stomach, wiping away all the tears from laughing.

"huh? he's the one that killed her." you faced back at him, realizing you were dead serious.

after explaining some while, you got the culprit right, as expected. after everyone left, heizou was still standing there, have you perked up his interest? "ur cute." he suddenly blurted out, while walking away, waving.

Lucy:

They are soooooo cool looking: I think she rocks the design honestly. I can't imagine her looking any other way. She's so pretty.

Didn't get enough screen time: Can never get enough screen time tbh. I feel like I'm in the minority here where I... actually don't necessarily want her to join the Agency? For one, I feel it's kind of a formality at this point - she's firmly in their corner and she's helped them so much already, and for another - I think she's very happy to be helping out in the café... something quiet and peaceful, and the owner who clearly cares about her, you know? But then that means she doesn't get as much screen time because she's not a member of the core group... sigh. It sucks. Actually I'd totally take a cute chapter extra where the café owner shows her the ropes... think of it - an adult who likes her and cares about her showing her how to make something that makes someone's day just a little nicer... an exchange of kindness... agh it's what she deserves!!! ...but yeah, I want her back in the main plot too forever and ever lmao.

They've never done anything wrong in their life: Tbh the part of Lucy's story that is so so important to me is how bitter and cruel she was at the beginning - she was having fun throwing those people into that room, letting them get chased around, see how they like being the helpless ones, the ones who have to struggle (not like they'd understand) - all in the name of avenging the young child so cruelly treated and discarded by what she thought at that time was the entire world... but also yeah, she's done nothing wrong ever I love her. 🥰

Yosano:

They are sooooo cool looking: Um. Have you seen her? ...yeah.

If they were real I would be afraid of them: A healthy kind of fear. I think that's wise honestly.

If they were real I would marry them: ...*cough* Next question.

I'm mentally ill about them: I don't know how you could go through her backstory and not be. Yosano's backstory takes BSD from disturbing at times to downright horrific. The war shattered this young girl. She had to build herself back from the bottom of the pit up. She never forgave herself. She felt honest relief when faced with someone who also did not forgive her. She honed herself into a threat and a harbinger. She did it to protect herself. She cannot see herself any other way.

They're deeper than they seem: YEAH. I mentioned this in another post but I don't see many people commenting on how she deflects questions about herself in the same way as Dazai, but instead of making herself appear harmless, she goes in the other direction - making herself appear so dangerous that even her coworkers are afraid. Yet she's frequently concerned about others, and does like to help where she can (even if she's often blunt about it). Yosano is full of juxtaposition. She values life more than anything. The callous disregard for life causes her to go into a murderous rage and decide such a person "should die by her hand". Her sadistic tendencies are ostensibly to scare her coworkers off from relying on her ability, but it's rather an ineffectual tactic when so many of them will throw themselves into danger regardless. She does it anyways, and apparently takes some genuine pleasure in the sadism. She tries to get Kunikida to loosen up at social events. She rarely interacts with the other members of the Agency except at meetings or parties. She carefully tries to get Ranpo to admit his ability (or lack thereof). She never talks about herself and hardly anyone appears to know the first thing about her (excepting Fukuzawa and Ranpo). She's analytical and a quick thinker with extensive medical knowledge. She almost never reveals the true extent of her thoughts and shrugs it off with casual indifference. She walls herself off - she's a very private person. There's. There's so much to her. She's flawed, she's kickass, her ability is op as all hell, and she's a great character imo. I hope to see her taking on a bigger role in the narrative again.

There’s Atsushi, Dazai’s star pupil. There’s Fyodor, arguably Dazai’s soulmate, a single mind in two bodies. There’s Kunikida, Dazai’s partner. There’s Oda, the reason Dazai wants to live. And then there’s Chuuya. If he asked Dazai to define him, to name his purpose, Chuuya already knows what he would hear. Chuuya is his dog, Chuuya is a slug, Chuuya is a chibi. And sure, maybe he is. But none of that is enough. Or, Chuuya can’t figure out what he means to Dazai exactly, but if he would only listen, he would realize that Dazai has been telling him all along.

This isn't exactly angsty but it's funny angsty cause Chuuya is oblivious as fuck in this and keeps jumping through hoops the whole time. Bro is literally living the brojob nightmare.

I Said It Was A Dream (and he agreed) by Hum My Name (My_Kind_of_Crazy)

The plan: Dazai Osamu leaves the mafia after Odasaku’s death, but he doesn’t leave behind his rage. Fuelled by the need to avenge his friend, he creates a painstaking plan to tear down the Port Mafia— to create a false haven for mafia members while, behind the scenes, he collects information meant to expose the organization for the criminal terror it is. The dilemma: Dazai doesn’t plan on Chuuya finding him. Chuuya believes Dazai’s simply hiding from the mafia, starting fresh with a harmless job in a local bar. They have their closure and move on— until Chuuya seeks him out again. Eventually, their emotions for one another can no longer be ignored. But Dazai’s desperation to take down the mafia means he can’t become distracted by his feelings for Chuuya Maybe, he can use this connection with Chuuya to his benefit. Maybe, he can have everything he wants, so long as Chuuya never finds out.

This is a canon divergence angst fic where Dazai decides to destroy the PM.

For three months, Chuuya has been missing and, during that time, Dazai has fallen further into an obsessive search for him. Until late one rainy night, an oddly familiar looking woman knocks on Dazai’s door.

This is a really odd entry ngl, I adore the angst and it's deliberately ooc. It's from 2020 so there is a lot of canon skk context missing but idk I found it an unexpectedly nice read. There are discussions of SA and coercion, some pre stormbringer characterization issues but if you go into this as a canon divergence au concept it's very enjoyable. Also the author is very explicit about this being a brainworm that they needed to write cause it wouldn't leave them alone.

Chuuya dreams every night, and in those dreams, he dies the most horrendous deaths, over and over. He wakes up in a cold sweat, afraid and disoriented. Dazai always assures him that they are nothing but nightmares. In this world, Fyodor has successfully obtained The Book. In this world, Dazai has witnessed Chuuya’s death 18,263 times.

I genuinely don't remember much from this fic but I do remember finding this good enough to be one of the first fics I bookmarked.

What characters/references do you hope to see in a possible Order of the clock tower arc of what do you think Agatha will be like? Based on the few appearances she has I think she’ll be a MoriDazaiFyodirSasaki type but you know.

Kafka Asagiri, by his own admission, draws inspiration for his characters from their namesakes' works and lives:

I draw inspiration not only from the author themselves, but also from their works. I like to look at particular scenes from those works of literature to then come up with the character [for my story]. For example, if we take Fyodor and look at this character, he is completely different [than the real-life author]. He has absolutely no similarities to Dostoevsky. I took inspiration from Dostoevsky's book, The Brothers Karamazov, in which there is a scene where Ivan has a conversation with the devil. I based Fyodor off of this.

I've noticed that his Western characters tend to resemble more closely their namesakes' works than their namesakes' lives. Which isn't to say the Japanese characters do not also borrow from the namesakes' works (they do, prolifically; I can cite the source material for much of Dazai's more iconic dialogue).

But in addition to Fyodor, who Asagiri acknowledged above more closely resembles a character than the author himself, Francis resembles Jay Gatsby; Louisa resembles Jo March; Steinbeck resembles Tom Joad; HP Lovecraft resembles Cthulu; Bram Stoker resembles Dracula— etc.

To some degree, the distinction isn't especially meaningful. Scott Fitzgerald, for example, clearly drew from himself and Zelda for Jay and Daisy, even using quotes from Zelda for some of Daisy's dialogue. Further, I'm sure my impression that the Japanese characters more closely resemble their authors might be related to the popularity of autobiographical fiction in modern Japan. And there are, of course, exceptions (such as Ranpo).

All of the above to say: I'm almost certain that most of Agatha Christie's personality is drawn from Judge Wargrave from And Then There Were None rather than the author herself, who preferred to project a more understated, self effacing presence. (Although, bsd!Agatha's title is a reference to Dame Agatha Christie's, and her reclusiveness could be modeled after irl!Agatha too.)

I'm not sure how familiar the fandom is with Wargrave; I studied And Then There Were None in middle school, but I don't know if it's still commonly taught or not. He's decisive, commanding, cold, calculating, and deeply sadistic. He acts as the narrative's detective, judge, jury, and executioner but only as a pretense for satisfying his own self-admitted lust to kill. He claims he only desires to murder the guilty, but he also appoints himself the moral arbiter of guilt and meters out suffering relative to the degree to which he's decided the others are guilty.

It's nakedly apparent that he is not interested in justice but in pageantry. He curates the setting and plays with the others like they're dolls, or more aptly, like he's a well-fed outdoor cat and they're the local bird population. In that sense, he isn't like any of the characters you mention above. He's a mastermind like them, sure, but he lacks Mori and Dazai's self awareness and insight, and Fyodor and Sasaki's ideological passion. There is nothing he seeks to protect, like Mori and Dazai, nor any institutions he seeks to destroy, like Fyodor. While he wants you to think he's avenging unpunished crimes like Sasaki, the justice he delivers is more arbitrary.

He just wants blood and artistry, but he also wants moral authority over those he deems beneath him even though he knows he isn't innocent. I think we've already seen that in bsd!Agatha. In Dead Apple, she sits in her ornate throne and, with serenity and pleasure, informs Ango that she will destroy Yokohama at dawn. She has her perfunctory justification (to stop the spread of Shibusawa's fog), but her eagerness, projected authority (over a foreign government, no less), imprecision (bombing the entire city rather than seeking to subdue or execute the perpetrating skill user), and method of execution (launching a convicted skill user to suicide bomb the city) speak to her bloodlust and sadism. When Shibusawa is killed and her attack is recalled, she openly pouts because she was looking forward to the destruction.

Quite frankly, I'm not convinced Agatha would make a compelling primary antagonist. She doesn't have any interest in Yokohama absent the opportunity to enact mass murder from a distance, and only if there's some national security justification, however superficial. She's modeled after a mastermind, but her position is too high, and her sights too macro to make use of Judge Wargrave's detailed pageantry.

The One Order may be enough to coax her attention, but again, her attention is too impersonal, and her sadism is too broad for the relationship-based conflicts on which bsd is built. She will not engage directly if she does engage, but by proxy. It's interesting to watch Fyodor and Dazai play their hybrid 4D chess-Go game because of their chemistry and understanding of themselves through the other. Agatha will not descend from her literal and figurative tower to meet them on any meaningful interpersonal level; Judge Wargrave certainly doesn't. Instead, she works best as a specter over Yokohama; an existential threat from a more powerful foreign power.

There are more than a few reasons to involve her more in the plot, but not on her own; there would need to be another, more intimate antagonist for bsd's structure to work. That said, I would love a secondary conflict based on foreign policy and statecraft; I thrive there, and I've been so hungry for more information about the bsd universe's distribution of powers and interests. Maybe a foreign conflict will erupt and new characters who can match Agatha's level of state power will be introduced because of the One Order; or Ango's treason; or the sudden global spread of vampirism that crippled several national governments; or the leggy calamity that was just extrajudicially released from imprisonment by a 10 y/o to whom he's now loyal; or the internationally notorious political assassin Mori is hiding in his basement; or the prior collapse of Standard Island; or Chuuya's mass murder of MANY foreign military guards in Meursault ft. his feral poses for the camera; or the destruction of what seems to be the most prominent if not only prison equipped to contain skill users given they transported Russian and Japanese nationals to its location off the coast of France; or the assassination of the general of the one world army the United Nations just formed and now can't dissolve; or that said general was assassinated within, like, a day of his appointment by someone who should not be under public scrutiny given he previously assassinated multiple Japanese leaders; or any number of recent canon events.

So, there's certainly fertile ground for a higher level conflict, and Agatha might work if set against other, similarly positioned state actors, but I'm not sure how interested in or equipped Asagiri is to write political intrigue. Or where the international community and Mushitaro should even begin re: addressing what just happened.

Notwithstanding any of the above, I do hope bsd!Agatha has a much younger trophy husband just like her namesake.

ranpo x reader angst

ranpo wants to avenge your death.

the world was crule and he knew that, yet he’s still holding on. Now barely after your death, ranpo was a detective of course, he don’t want to admit it.. but he doesn’t have an ability or combat skills. Maybe, just maybe if he had one then he could’ve protected you, you and your future. But there’s one thing he can’t figure out, who just who was behind your death? Why is he, the best detective in the world not able to solve this? This should’ve been a piece of cake for him, yet why is he struggling? This is the first time he felt something like this.. and it hit him right in the heart, how? Why? Who? Why doesn’t he know the answer? Why is his heart beating so fast? Just what did you do to make him feel like this? He knew. He knew everything ends. But he just couldn’t bring himself to do so to you, you who complimented him, you who praises him, you who were always there when he needed, you promised him that you’ll stay with him. You never did, your life got stripped away like some useless paper on the street, waiting for inner demise. why did the world strip you away from him? He would go on his knees and beg. The Great Detective Ranpo.. would go on his knees and beg for you to come back, for you to hug him and assure him it will be okay. For you to kiss his face, and cuddle with him. Oh how lonely the other side of the bed was when you were gone. It feels.. cold and freezing, everyone’s worried about him. ‘ as long as i’m fine, everything’s fine’ after all, if he’s not fine.. then everything’s not fine, he’s the pillar of the agency. But to their surprise, he didn’t go in the 5 stages of grief. He’s trying to solve the case of your murder. To avenge you, and his mind.

he did it. He finally did it. It took longer than any cases he have solved. But he did it. He can avenge you. Finally.

“ EVERYONE!!” ranpo yelled, catching everyone in the agency attention.

“ i found the murderer.” he added, everyone in the agency eyes widened and yosano was ready to kick some asses. You were her best friend. It hurts her so much to see you go like that, if she could’ve arrived earlier, maybe she could’ve saved you. ‘ angel of death’ bullshit, what good is she if she couldn’t protect someone so dear to her?  

“ game on then.” dazai spoke up, and everyone nodded.

The murderers were located in the city’s slums, it make the agency wonder how you got killed in the first place, considering how powerful you were. But Ranpo explained to everyone.. you got kidnapped and tortured, they tried to use you to lure the agency out but you would always make their plans failed, they threatened to hurt people in the agency.. but you refused. They tortured you into giving information, but you wouldn’t budge. You said the agency was strong, they can handle a bunch of low lives. But they had ‘The Book’, saying if you don’t do anything, or tell anything, they’ll kill you and frame the agency for it. So you gave them fake information and when they knew this, they killed you. ‘The Book’ actually wasn’t the book. It was a replica of the sorts, but you didn’t know that. They took advantage of you loyalty and that made the agency’s blood boil. Avenge you, take revenge was the only thing hanging in their mind.

Other ships: Contrary to popular belief, I really like DazAtsu.  

What kind of fic I’d write about them: This is a bit long but: soukoku where Fifteen goes like this: Chuuya and Sheep form an alliance with ADA in search for Arahabaki. During the Dragon Head conflict, the “friends” that Chuuya was so angry about dying were Sheep members. He goes AWOL to avenge them and kill Shibusawa, and he meets Dazai there (because Mori sent him).

A favorite canon moment: “You used Corruption believing in me? How beautiful.” Alternatively, if we’re talking about favorite canon moment in the manga that never got animated: Chapter 11, 23rd page, where Dazai laughed at Chuuya’s exit. Yes I’m still bitter we didn’t get to see or hear Dazai laugh. 

Color that reminds me of them: Anything in the creme to tan spectrum. How is it that I remember him when seeing warm colors even though he’s the coldest, most unreachable person in the whole series-

Song that reminds me of them: If you scroll down my blog, you’ll find a lot of Mother Mother links where I included Dazai in the caption! For now, probably Verbatim by Mother Mother (if you want a song for soukoku, I highly suggest Bad Word by Panicland)

A headcanon about them: Dazai always asks women to commit double/lover’s suicide with him BUT if someone agrees, and Dazai sees that they’re depressed, then he’d try to cheer them up. 

A random AU I think up on the spot for them: Modern/Non-Power AU where Dazai is Japan’s version of Sherlock Holmes (I’m sorry Ranpo-).

Anything else: I kin him for his grey morals, outlook in life and coping mechanism for all of his emotional baggage and trauma. I’m not an apologist, I just love/hate this man too much.

Could I ask for a headcanon list—not specifically x reader unless you prefer it that way—about Fyodor just curling up with a close friend who’s upset, and being there for them? Maybe with an added touch of his feelings about it, and/or a warm blanket? Though if that’s not in-character for your Fyo, could you write a list that is? (No, I’m not feeling particularly upset, just... I can’t for the life of me figure out what he’d do, and it’s bugging me. Plus soft Fyo is always a plus.)
