Exquisite Equinox!
Hail to all you sagacious beings who celebrate the Earth’s successive seasons! Here, in the Northern Hemisphere, Fall’s arrival brings cooler evenings, with the promise of bountiful harvests to come. The impending touch of frost should, ere long, ignite leaves to blaze with vivid colors. Those in the Southern Hemisphere rejoice in the triumph of Spring’s active growth over Winter’s dormancy. They…

Puss In Boots: The Last Wish (2022) 10/10
Tumblr media
After dying eight times, and onto his final life, Puss In Boots goes on an all out race to the Last Wish-including Goldilocks and The Three Bears, Kitty Softpaws, Jack Horner and his henchmen, and Perrito, a chipper dog-to get all his nine lives back.
This movie is so funny, first off. There's a few jokes that go over kids' heads, and a few swears that are bleeped out, because it's supposed to be family friendly, but it's funny. Antonio Banderas and Salma Hayek Pinault have amazing chemistry, going back and forth with witty banter.
The film also puts a twist on a few of the fairytale characters such as Goldilocks and Jack, but that's about it.
Despite the humor, this film also explores darker themes such as death, (one of the characters is a metaphor for death, for example) loneliness, and betrayal. Though it's not explicitly stated, there's also the lesson that life is short, each of us gets only one life, and death happens to everyone eventually. There's also the presence of a panic attack, which may hit home for many people, especially during the start of COVID, when many mental health cases rose. But for a kids' movie, this has very mature, very grown up messages. I think they did a good job depicting these morals.
It think this film would be easy for kids to understand that death is natural and it happens to everyone. But let's be honest, death isn't easy to talk about. But if this film makes that concept a tad easier to understand, then that's a win.
The animation style is different, compared to the one they used in the Shrek franchise. This one is similar to Spiderman:Into The Spider-Verse. The colors are bright, there's so much little detail, such as a shining blade or gleaming eye. I wasn't too hot on the idea at first, but it grew on me and I think I like this animation style better than the previous ones in the franchise.
This is one of the rare sequels that's better than the first movie, and it's a film to watch if you want to laugh. It's funny, emotional, dramatic, and laughable. I would watch this again.

Puss in Boots: The Last Wish film review
Director:
Joel Crawford
Main cast:
Antonio Banderas, Salma Hayek, Harvey Guillen, John Mulaney, Florence Pugh, Olivia Colman, Ray Winstone, Samson Kayo and Wagner Moura.
Runtime: 102 minutes.
Does it pass the Bechdel test? Yes
Basic Plot:
After years of adventuring, Puss in Boots is down to the last of his nine lives. Hearing about a special type of magic, Puss in Boots goes on an adventure to obtain a wish.
Overall thoughts:
Puss in Boots: The Last Wish is a fun cinematic adventure. The voice acting, storyline, comedy and action sequences are all great. Furthermore, there are some great lessons regarding relationships, happiness, greed and resilience. The only issue with the film is that the presence of Mama Bear in this film contradicts established events in the first Shrek film. In Shrek, Mama Bear is killed off-screen while in The Last Wish (set after Shrek) she is alive. This means that there are either two separate sentient fairytale bear families or that the original Mama Bear was somehow resurrected. Regardless, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish is a well-written and entertaining film.
Overall rating: 4.7 out of 5 stars.

Puss in Boots: The Last Wish
Tumblr media
Movies watched in 2023
Puss in Boots: The Last Wish (2022, USA)
Dir: Joel Crawford (with Januel Mercado credited as co-director)
Writers: Paul Fisher & Tommy Swerdlow (story by Tommy Swerdlow & Tom Wheeler)
Mini-review:
My expectations for this were crazy high and, thankfully, it didn't disappoint at all. The story is incredibly emotional, the characters are richly written and the animation is... WOW. Every single shot of the movie is mind-blowingly stunning. I couldn't take my eyes off the screen for even a second. You can just see all the work, love and passion that went into making this film. And also, the story feels so refreshing and original. Like, from an objective point of view, I can tell it isn't that groundbreaking, but the way it's told did feel... new to me.
Another thing I want to highlight is the Wolf, cause I can't remember the last time I saw a villan that was so genuinely terrifying. The character's animation and voice work are pitch-perfect. I know the same can be said about the rest of characters, but this one was particularly striking to me. And going back to the story, I really loved its message and the way they brought all the plot threads/characters together at the end. To sum up, this movie stole my heart thanks to its story, its characters and the sheer beauty of its animation. Let's hope we get to see more stuff like that, but in the Far Far Away setting 👀

Link: Hey Sonic,l what’s up.
Sonic: Not much, just had a realization.
Link: Oh?
Sonic: Yeah. I just realized that Puss in Boots: the Last Wish is an animated kids version of Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance.
Link: ... You’re gonna have to elaborate on that one buddy.
Sonic: Oh, it’s easy. See the first big fight for the protagonist in both is against a giant and monstrous foe that would be the final boss anywhere else, Metal Gear Ray/The Giant.
Link: Okay but I still don’t-
Sonic: Then the protagonist fights against a superior foe who seems like just some guy who defeats the protag and challenges his ideals, Jetstream Sam/Death.
Link: I mean... you’re not-
Sonic: THEN, the protag fights a female boss who thinks he’s cute, Mistral/Softpaws, after acquiring a canine companion, Bladewolf/Perrito. Then comes the fight against an absolute scumbag, Monsoon/Jack Horner. Then the protag fights their rival again after having rethought their ideals and changed as a person and wins where before they lost, Sam/Death again. And finally, the real final boss against a roided-out rich guy after power, Giant Jack Horner/Senator Armstrong.
Link: ...My eyes have been opened. (+3 Insight Gained)

Field of Dreams (X-Files fanfic)
Tumblr media
Mulder's favorite movie inspires him to fill his seemingly endless free time with a special project shortly after moving into the Unremarkable House.
I was reading a bunch of fics about dad!Mulder and baseball, and had the sudden realization that my favorite baseball movie of all time is so Mulder-coded, that it would 100% be his favorite move too, full stop. And thus this was born. It seems all my X-Files fanfics are going to be accidents, none of them planned.
Read on AO3
She should have known this was coming eventually.
The well-worn VHS had been sitting on the coffee table for the last two weeks, in the living room of their new, unremarkable house.
Kevin Costner. James Earl Jones. Ray Liotta. Baseball and dreams and ghosts and time travel and the healing of broken father-son relationships...
It was his favorite movie, but for reasons so personal to him that he never spoke of it, instead claiming that Caddyshack or Plan 9 from Outer Space was his top pick if anyone asked. She'd never even known he had it until she woke one night to find him downstairs watching it alone in the dark, his face lit up by the flickering images on the screen. He said nothing, but allowed her to sink into the cushions of their shared couch beside him, curling into his side. They watched it together in silence. No words needed to be said, after all. She knew him well enough to understand what this movie meant to him. As the credits rolled, he flicked the TV off and the living room of their creaky house was enveloped in darkness once again.
He'd been lonely here at home. He tried not to let it show, but she knew anyway. It was only recently that they'd finally been able to settle down, purchase a house out in the middle of nowhere while she put her medical degree to good use. But while she was away, he was left alone with his thoughts for hours at a time, nothing but the peaceable silence of the Virginia countryside to keep him company.
There were certainly signs she should have picked up on. Dirt under his fingernails. A splotch of grease on the corner of his sleeve. The smell of gasoline on his hands when she came home from work and was welcomed with a kiss.
He wasn't sitting idly in his office all day, that much she knew.
But it wasn't your run-of-the-mill yard work he was busy with, either.
He seemed happier. She tried not to question it. For the first time since they'd moved in, he seemed more like himself, and she saw a future where they could be happy here, establishing a comfortable routine and finally getting started on living a somewhat normal life.
She came home one day to find Mulder a couple hundred feet from the house, wrestling an overgrown chain link fence with his chosen weapon of a pair of bolt cutters. He waved at her with a smile, and she felt her heart flutter. She wouldn't ask what he was up to, not yet. When he was ready, he'd let her in on his secret.
A week later, he was in the small shed behind the house, drenched in sweat but seemingly gratified at the work he was doing cutting wood planks with a hand saw and sanding them down to perfection.
Some days he wasn't even there when she pulled into the driveway, and though she missed the way he would run up to her like a puppy to welcome her home, she was glad he'd found something to pass the time that made him happy. She secretly appreciated the flush of color on his face and sweat stains on his t-shirts when he finally made his way back to the house in time for dinner, bounding up the stairs for a quick shower before joining her at the table. It was a side to him she didn't see often before, what with his white-collar job and Armani suits. He'd even acquired a thin layer of facial hair in recent days, having forgotten to shave, and she couldn't bring herself to be mad at his new rugged, manly look. In fact, she quite enjoyed it.
Scully was napping on the couch, exhausted from another long day of work, when she felt a hand on her shoulder shaking her awake.
"Scully, wake up," a soft voice spoke, "I wanna show you something."
"What's that?" she slurred, her eyes blinking open blearily. His hands cupped hers and pulled her to her feet, steadying her on her wobbly, half-asleep legs.
"Come on," he said, and he tugged her toward their back porch door.
The first wisps of crisp fall air danced across her face as she stepped into the backyard, following Mulder with her hand clasped comfortably in his.
"Where are we going, Mulder?" she finally asked. They'd passed the boundary of what she traditionally thought of as their backyard, and were now traveling down a trail through the tall, wild grass that filled their sprawling property.
"You'll see," was all he said, but she saw the gleam of enjoyment in his eye and the way the corner of his mouth quirked up in a smile.
The sun had begun its retreat to the horizon, the longer days of summer beginning to fade into the shorter ones of autumn. The sky around them was painted in vivid oranges, yellows, and pinks, the aftermath of a brief storm that had passed through. The earthy, fresh scent of the air filled her lungs, and she was once again in awe of the peace they'd finally been able to find, after all they had been through together. She squeezed his hand tighter.
As they came up over the hill, she saw it.
Freshly turned dirt, darkened with moisture from the rain, in the shape of a diamond. The grass was mown short, weeds removed until it perfectly mirrored the well-manicured outfield of any respectable baseball stadium. There were wooden benches on each side of the field, set up in raised tiers so that hypothetical onlookers could see above the heads of those in front of them. And the chain link fence had been modified and built into a decent impression of a backstop behind home plate, which appeared to be made of a burlap bag of sand. Beyond the outfield, the wild grasses and flowers grew up tall, stretching as far as the eye could see.
Scully felt a tear slip from her eye, and she quickly lifted a finger to wipe it away.
"Did a ghost tell you to build this, Mulder?" she asked, the hitch in her voice betraying the emotions that laced her joke.
He smiled and pulled her into his side. She hadn't noticed the baseball jersey he wore before, but it brought back fond memories.
"Yeah, actually, but it turns out the Lone Gunmen don't have an ounce of athletic skill to spare, so it got boring pretty quick."
She let out a watery laugh, wiping more forcefully at the moisture on her cheeks before turning back to him.
"Well, are you gonna show me around?"
He grinned and took off, walking backwards toward the field with a spring in his step. As they approached the field, this field that he had built, he paused to grab something out of a dirt-encrusted wheelbarrow that sat adjacent to the tall grass. From behind his back, he produced a baseball glove and a wooden bat, offering both to her.
"You pitching or batting first, Scully?" he asked, the fire of purpose, of passion in his eyes for the first time in a long time.
She smiled and grabbed the bat, which he used to drag her giggling toward the field.
"Up to bat first is Shoeless Dana Scully, coming out of retirement after 5 years for the opening game at this unremarkable field!" Mulder narrated, the playful tone of his voice sending her back in time. She dragged her feet exaggeratedly to home plate, lifting the bat above her shoulders as Mulder took his place on the pitcher’s mound.
"Fire away, poor boy," Scully called, earning a flashing smile from the man with the glove. She had thought that somewhere along the way, between dingy motel rooms and nights spent sleeping in their car, he had lost that boyish look he sometimes had. But there it was, that carefree, life-loving look of wonderment that had only made her fall deeper in love. Her stomach did a flip.
Mulder drew back in a windup before firing a fastball right over the plate. It whooshed past, clanging into the rattling chain link fence before Scully could even blink.
"What was that, Mulder?" Scully protested, raising her palms to the air in question.
Mulder laughed, kicking the dirt with his dirty sneakers before looking back up at her.
"I know your secret, Dana Scully," he said, mischief glinting in his eye. "You were on your brother's little league team as a kid. I found the pictures in that album you keep hidden in the closet."
Scully's jaw dropped and she let out a laugh.
"You've been holding out on me, slugger."
"Well, that was a long time ago," she reasoned, doing an impressive job of hiding the fact that she was guilty as sin.
"Uh huh, I'm sure," he nodded, tossing the ball a couple times in his right hand. "Let's see what you got, babe."
An eyebrow raise.
"Like Babe Ruth."
She rolled her eyes.
Accepting her fate, Scully got in her batting stance and prepared to hit the ball. He whipped one at her, and she made contact with a satisfying crack! sending the ball soaring into the outfield.
Mulder nodded his head up and down, doing a circle around the pitchers mound as he cracked a sunflower seed between his teeth. "Yep, that's what I thought. So you mean to tell me all these years I could have been talking baseball stats with you? Scully, who's your favorite team?"
Scully rolled her eyes and dug the end of the bat in the ground, tracing shapes in the dirt. "I never actually liked baseball, Mulder, I only played cause I refused to let Bill do anything without me."
"Are you hiding any other spectacular skills I should know about? Do I need to build a magical basketball court next?"
"Magical, Mulder?" she said, raising a familiar skeptical eyebrow in his direction.
He shrugged and gestured around him. "What? This feels pretty magical to me," he answered with a wink, all that natural charm he possessed coming out in full force.
She shook her head, laughing softly at this side of him that she had missed.
"I think it's safe to say I'm not hiding any basketball skills," she spoke, gesturing at her 5'3" form.
Mulder reached down to grab another ball from the bucket beside him, idly passing it between his bare hand and his glove.
"Good, because this was a lot of work."
Dusk slowly turned into night, the cool air turning cold as they took turns batting and pitching, until they'd exhausted their stash of baseballs. They'd be lost to the darkened fields until the morning, when the sun would again illuminate the landscape.
As Mulder led her back to the house, flashlight lighting the way before them, the words from the movie echoed in her ears, as if from a disembodied voice. "Ease his pain."
She wrapped an arm around his waist, pressing her cheek against his shoulder. His hand moved in small circles on her lower back, warming her against the chill that had settled in.
Whatever regrets they had, whatever dreams were broken beyond repair, they had this. They had each other. And even if this is how things always would be, nothing more than the two of them and this unremarkable house, she would be happy. And so would he.
"Is this heaven, Mulder?" she asked, her voice soft and pensive.
Mulder smiled and pressed a kiss to her hair.
"I think it just might be."
------
Anyway, the only way Field of Dreams could be more Mulder is if an alien showed up in it. I mean, it has ghosts, time travel, baseball, and difficult father-son relationships. What more could you want? Go watch it if you haven't. Even if you're not a baseball fan. The end literally makes me weep every time.
I may come back for a follow up, if the vision strikes me. One word: Jackson.
Now what are you still doing here, go watch the movie!

RBR's organisational make-up at the top is a mess tbh, but it's also why if Horner is making a move, he's making it now.
Currently Mark Mateschitz owns Red Bull Racing, but appears to be taking less of an active role than his father did. Mintzlaff oversees all of Red Bull's F1 teams, all their football teams, plus their ice hockey investments, as well as other stuff, plus the Red Bull Media House and its extreme sports properties.
Christian Horner is listed as both CEO and Team Principal of RBR. However, in May 2021, Max Verstappen's manager, Ray Vermeulen said of making deals with Red Bull: "There is only one man who decides - Dietrich Mateschitz. Helmut Marko is his right-hand man and has a blank cheque for Formula 1."
You've also got the incident in 2020, when Honda announced their 'departure' from F1, only a week after Christian Horner said about them needing to work more closely together. When Marko was asked about it, his response was: "Mr. Horner is a team principal, but not involved in strategic matters. Mr. Mateschitz and I have known for a long time."
It seems inconceivable that any other CEO in F1 wouldn't have the final decision on their drivers, so it certainly seems, at least until the death of Dietrich Mateschitz, that Horners role as CEO/Team Principal has been quite unconventional.
So then you have Helmut Marko. 'Special Advisor', 'Dietrich Mateschitz's right hand man'. But of course, Dietrich is dead. My opinion is what we see here is the delayed but inevitable struggle to fill the power vacuum. And I can't help but think that whoever can get Oliver Mintzlaff onside will take it.
Sorry it took me a minute getting to your ask I was stuck looking for drivers who left championship-winning teams.
Thank you for the rundown. From what I read, Marko doesn't get along with Mintzlaff so it seems he could really be in a tough spot. Also there was always the whole thing about the other teams questioning what his role is because he's not under the cost cap because he's just a consultant or whatever his official job description is.
The way I understand it, but tell me if I'm wrong, Mateschitz gave Marko the position because he was like "heyyy my friend let's make business and money together" or whatever and because the big boss gave him the position himself and they were friends Marko could do whatever he wanted however he wanted (and clearly say whatever he wanted) and nobody could say anything. You're not gonna complain about your big boss's bestie.
But now Mateschitz being dead, actual businessmen who are trying to do actual business are looking at him like "why are we paying you and why are we even listening to you exactly?" and of course Horner would be more than happy to be able to run the team the way he wants and is supposed to be able to as the TP.
It leaves the question of what does the son think/can do/would do about it as the owner? Does he care about his dad's friend or something? Can he veto a possible termination (and again : would he) even though he's not actively running the company? I guess we will see.

Movie Recs In Honor of Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes
I decided to write out a list of movies to watch in honor of Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes coming out very soon. This list will feature movies with apes besides the POTA movies, or movies with weird and bizarre friendships/found families.
The Original Planet of the Apes Franchise (1968-1973, Amazon Prime)
Honestly, I've only watched the 1968 movie a handful of times. I decided to watch all of the original franchise leading up to the release of Kingdom. They're all a lot of fun, with social/political commentaries at the time of each film. If you're a movie collector, or like behind-the-scenes/director's commentaries, I highly recommend buying the Blu Ray compilation pack.
2. Tim Burton's Planet of the Apes (2001, Disney+ or Amazon Prime)
I know, hear me out. Yes, it's over-hated, and yes, there was A LOT of potential for this movie. There were definitely too many "cooks in the kitchen" when drafting this movie. Imho, I think it's a guilty pleasure, popcorn movie. If you're a fan of makeup effects, Rick Baker (THE modern makeup effects master) does an absolutely phenomenal job with the designs of the apes in this movie (and check out his Instagram too). I do like the production and the ape costume designs for this film as well.
Tim Roth and Paul Giamatti are such a blast in this movie, too!
And the posters for this movie look so cool.

3. Planet of the Apes Reboot Trilogy (2011-2017, Amazon Prime)
I think this is what the 2001 movie should have been, and was trying to go for. While the three movies did make their money back at the box office, I have two theories why they almost went under everyone's radar (again, this is my opinion):
A. Because of the mixed reception from the 2001 movie.
B. Because of the abundance of comic book & remake movies coming out during the 2011-2017 years.
I put this trilogy right up with the Lord of the Rings and Star Wars. The storytelling is great, the special effects hold up well, and this reboot's version of Caesar has became one of my favorite main characters in modern film.
4. Mighty Joe Young (1998 remake, Disney+)
I don't know why this movie doesn't get talked about that much. Rick Baker, once again, does incredible work on the special effects for Joe. There's also a great musical score by James Horner. And Bill Paxton and Charlize Theron give amazing acting performances. And I think it's actually one of the better remakes that came out from the late 1990s.
In fact, the team that worked on the 1933 King Kong also made the 1949 film. Even Robert Armstrong (Carl Denham) came back for the '49 film. Ray Harryhausen worked under the supervision of Willis O'Brien for the special effects for the original movie. He also has a cameo appearance alongside Terry Moore (Jill Young) in a party scene.
Aaaaand I just found out the writers, Mark Rosenthal and Lawrence Konner, also did an uncredited rewrite for the 2001 POTA movie.
5. Tarzan (1999, Disney+)
Of course, who doesn't love Tarzan??? And Phil Collins's A.M.A.Z.I.N.G soundtrack???!!!
6. King Kong (1933, 2005, Amazon Prime/MAX)
Okay, technically it's a giant monster movie and the OG prior to Godzilla. And it also set the standard of film making overall. However, it is also a bit of a Beauty and the Beast story, hence the lines: "It was Beauty killed the Beast" and the "And the prophet said: And lo, the Beast looked upon the face of Beauty. And it stayed its hand from killing. And from that day forward, he was as one dead." I also recommend watching the extended cut of the 2005 remake.
7. Lilo & Stitch (2002, Disney+)
Again, who doesn't love Lilo and Stitch???
8. How to Train Your Dragon Trilogy (2010-2019, Amazon Prime/Peacock App)
Once again, who doesn’t love HTTYD (and why are they remaking it as a live action movie????)???
9. Gorillas in the Mist (1988, Amazon Prime)
This movie is about Dian Fossey (played by Sigourney Weaver), a primatologist who studied mountain gorillas and she was part of a trio of women who studied great apes; the amazing Jane Goodall and her study of chimpanzees, and Birute Galdikas who studies orangutans. The movie is also based on her book of the same name.
I use past tense for Dian, because she met a tragic and horrific death while she was conducting her research on gorillas. I have in-lined a link to Dian Fossey's Wikipedia article for further reading.
Rick Baker, once again, does some amazing practical creature effects work for the gorillas.
10. George of the Jungle (1997, Disney+)
One of my favorite Brendan Fraser movies, and such a fun, and a bit of a campy movie based on the cartoon series (which is also a spoof of Tarzan). I quote this movie every so often. Unfortunately, Rick Baker did not do the ape designs for this movie. The creature effects this time around was done by none other than the Jim Henson Creature Workshop!

The sun shines it's harmful rays upon the concrete stones that stabbed the dirt in the town with its pathways.
Crowds.
Many of them.
Jack walked amongst the crowds, most people stumbling out of the large males way, his hands swaying by his side as he took large strides to get to where he was going.
But, you?
Oh god.
So many people,
He was so quick,
You couldn't keep up.
Your eyes panned around, it was like everyone was going to cave in and you wouldn't be able to find him, and--
Oh god.
It struck your chest with its mad fury, a hissing squeal escaped from your tightened lungs. Digits squeezing into fists, white-knuckled fists, as you gulped.
No, you couldn't-
You wouldn't-
You raised an arm, extending it as your fingers practically snapped to hold onto the sleeve of his large coat, his head turning back towards you.
You pulled yourself closer towards him, you didn't want to lose him in the crowd.
Of course, he didn't understand, why were you suddenly so determined to cling to him? He kept walking, butnyou didn't let go, like he thought you would.
Why wouldn't you let go?
Did you want to hold his hand?
But, you two got out the crowds soon, as his teal eyes snapped and locked their focus upon your figure, as a confused sputter escaped from between plump, peach, lips.
He asked you why you held on.
Yet, you explained.
You didn't want to lose him. Or be alone there. What if you two got separated?
And you two could never find eachother again.
He rolled his eyes, a small tongue click echoing out his mouth, yet he told you you could never lose him.
He was too handsome anyway.
He wasn't shy to compliment himself.
Yet, now,
When you two walked in a crowd...
His large hands seemed to scoop you up, with much ease as he placed you in his arms. He had you close to his chest, hands under you, one of your rump and the other on your upper back, holding you in place. Your hand extended, clasping the lapel of his coat, as he walked.
He thought about you.
Now, he did this everytime.
Scoop.
Hold.
Then soon back down.
It repeated, some kind of routine,
Oh, and your free of him leaving you for somebody new.
Psh!
He laughed it off.
He always told you, you were his. He was yours.
What didn't you understand.
Bah!
But, he repeated the routine and..
I mean, I suppose the way you cooed to him, thanking him, how he eased your nerves, complimenting him,
I suppose it boosted his ego more.
And, I mean,
It gave him a free chance to-
To keep you by his side.
