He never really gets to see the love of his life on earth, always looking from a far and hoping she can hear his singing and wishes. Then he's mortally wounded trying to help the frogs return to people only to learn, as he's dying, that they're staying frogs! So why did he have to fight like that?

Michael Surrey’s Timon drawings will always remain the visual blueprint of the character for me. He has this way of drawing “comic relief” characters that doesn’t TREAT them like comic relief, but as fully fleshed-out beings in their own right. He treats them like PEOPLE (well, meerkats, in Timon’s case.) He somehow gives Timon this weirdly elegant elasticity that’s simultaneously full of mischief, comedic timing, and emotional nuance. Not to disparage the incredible work of other animators, but I feel like every iteration of Timon that came afterwards didn’t quite live up to the vitality and spark that Surrey brought to the character. (And I am including my OWN way of drawing him in that. I can’t live up to Mike’s drawings either.) Frankly, I don’t know how he did it, but I’m gonna be studying him for a long, LONG time.

Just LOOK at these delicious drawings:

I LOVE the strong sense of anatomy that he gave to the character, particular in his limbs and torso! He doesn’t ever let Timon get too noodly or stubby, and I really appreciate that. These are the gold standard for Timon, in my humble opinion.
