Cora & Rose Rivers for @whyeverr Rebuild a City Challenge (more info + download under the cut)
I've been following whyeverr's rbac-challenge for such a long time and I was (and still am) totally in awe of the dedication that she puts into the challenge and the story itself! So when she announced that she was looking for survivors for the challenge, I knew I had to create some sims.
Meet Cora and Rose, two sisters who are originally from Chestnut Ridge, where they grew up on the outskirts of the city on a horse farm ... everything was fine until the day tragedy struck and the townie apocalypse started. They left their farm in a hurry and lost their parents who fought the townies off so that they could escape. There was grief, anger, and yet, determination to survive until the day, they would take back the farm from the townies.
Cora is pretty straightforward, she's a woman of action and has never lost a fight, while Rose is still a teenager who's trying to find herself against all odds. She may be seen hanging around with the wrong crowd and her decisions might not be the best, but she's always looking out for her loved ones. Even though both sisters are very different, they always have each other's back. (If anyone still knows the TV show The Tribe, that's where I got my inspiration for Rose from)
Download: You can find them in the gallery, my ID is aeromantica (please turn on custom content in the search, I've not used any CC but they somehow have that label)

ATLA NETFLIX, some of the thoughts I wrote down while watching:
The costumes!!!!!!
Fire. Bending.
The bending in general but FIRE bending and the way it left the victims.
Gasp! Oh, oh, oh! Help was sent to the earth kingdoms, maybe not the best fighters but still a lot of them, that's why the air nomads were wiped out and the southern water was devastated while the Earth kingdom stood the strongest. I like the way they set this up.
AAAAAAANG!!!
AIR NOMADS!!!!
Monk Gyatso!!!
Kinda bummed that Katara didn't break the ice by getting angry but I'm gonna be optimistic.
Hoooooo Sokka and Zuko exceed my expectations! "His destiny". "Repeating it doesn't help".
Although, the face burn is a bit underwhelming especially with what we just saw of the previous fire victims.
Sooooo excited for all the bending!!!
THE COSTUMES! THE TATTOO, ESPECIALLY THE WAY IT'S PLACED AROUND HIS ARMS!!!
Idk why maybe bcs Katara is my favourite so I'm watching her but she feels so.... Hmmm. Quiet. What happened to her lines at the beginning, for someone who's words are the first we hear in the OG.
When Sokka said "Before you kill someone", I expected at least a "Sokka!".
I do love the actress with the lines she's been given tho. With the rant to Sokka on the Air Temple. Gets that hopeful glint Katara has.
Zuko flipping out yes! He's so... Spazzy, does that make sense?
I'm not too young, I just haven't seen the world yet- Suki
Suki and Sokka are sooooooooo awkward I LOVE IT!!! Also that Mulan make-up remover. Asians are just built different I guess.
AANG AND KYOSHI!
Katara standing in Zuko's way- I can't wait until Zuko offers to kill her mother's killer with her!
We got Azula!!! Oh I love those first lines delievered like that!
Did I mention I love how Zuko is visibly falling apart, barely able to keep himself together, because I do, I really do!
Okay I'm gonna say it, Katara feels like she's just being dragged around everywhere. No- no initiative.
I....
Do not like that.
Feels like she's not getting riled up enough by Sokka maybe.
Mai is SO Mai, you can hear it so well!
They did Jet's intro good!
My Cabbages! The most passion so far!
Ooooh! Oh I do adore the secret tunnel scene in this!!!!
The Bumi actor is so good.
A friend. A friend! The direct Aang/Zuko and Gyatso/Iroh parallels.
The Zuko redemption storyline is living up to itself so far.
As for Azula, I really wished they left the breaking down era a little bit later. Like yeah, Azula wasn't right in the head from the beginning but that was shown more in how terrifyingly aloof and unstoppable she was in the earlier episode I believe but, well.
There's already a bond between Aang and Zuko but I've yet to see anything half like OG Katara and Aang!
Hmmm, actually, regarding Azula..... Ozai is, weirdly, invested in Zuko in a way we could've said OG Ozai would never say that. Which explains Azula here.
I love the avatar state glowy effects!
The sexism against Katara doubled and coated with genuine concern and real-life reasons that makes it hard to counter argue is making me lean in, in anticipation of how it will make my Katara blow up.
...... So no plan?..... I'm working on it, Uncle.
Sokka rushing towards Katara to 'convince her'.
Azula and Katara in the same episode is foreshadowing parallels.
Excited to have Katara's bending to visibly improve, like in the OG. And by that I meant how organically her water whip evolved smoother and faster in the animation. Like, you could see it.
........ Pakku vs Katara. Love the action, the effects. It could've been so good in regards to catharsis if Katara had just raged...... I'm just. Not going to.
Getting rid of their machine controls renders the fire army sitting ducks in the middle of ocean. Which makes me think of that reverse AU where the water tribe conquers the world.
If the water benders all work together, they can just have a giant tsunami turn them all over.
Master? Master Katara?...... That's so.... It's surprising rather than something you'd anticipate and cheer when we finally gain it.
Not a single waterbending training montage with Pakku. I'm still not sure if Pakku trained her or just gave her the title.
I like that I can tell that they know what they want to do with Sokka.
Not so much with Katara.
I gasped when all the Northern Tribe female waterbenders stepped forward like that.
So. There's a lot of stuff that they removed and added that I didn't like- less 'added', and more 'rushed'. Things that should've built up gradually, that could've been revealed in little bits were just immediately shown to us- my example here is Azula. When I first saw Azula, she was terrifying, her and her group were both my dream group and incited fear and awe in younger me, I didn't think she was insecure, I didn't think she was scared, she was practically the damn terminator with that epic episode of tracking the gaang slowly but steadily and driving them to exhaustion.
Is she actually insecure and batshit insane and scared? Yes. Was that what you were supposed to be able to tell with a single glance? No.
At first I thought maybe I was just biased with Katara, but I also feel like a lot of stuff they did with Azula was just.....
They did Sokka good, which was actually who I was concerned about the most. Zuko- I really love his portrayal. My moments of doubt with Aang are actually closely tied with Katara, which makes sense because hello, their friendship and bond was very important to the whole thing. Would've been a wonderful contrast to his Past bond with Gyatso and his Future bond with Katara.
I do think it's good.
Let me marinate on this.

Hey! Was wondering if you could do Anger number 20 for T’challa? I never see any angst story’s/ shorts with him and would like to see what that would be like! Tyyyy💜
Hey! Sure! Let’s do this one in honor of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Beautiful film. I hope y’all enjoy!
Tumblr media
“Where is she!”
Medical staff scrambled to clear a path for King T’Challa as he barreled his way through hallways in blinding rage. He’d never understand the inner workings of American hospitals. They were too slow and hardly prepared for true emergencies. Now was not the time for inaction. Not when his heart was in danger of no longer beating.
“Sir, you can’t be back here.”
T’Challa stopped in his tracks, shoulders raised and face devoid of emotion, to regard the doctor blocking his path forward just a few steps ahead. “Excuse me?”
“You-you, can’t…be back here. This is a restricted area. Staff and patients only, sir.”
“King.”
“I’m sorry. King.”
Stepping forward, T’Challa took two long strides to meet the doctor at eye level. His stare was piercing and unnerving. The hallways grew quiet in anticipation of a blow up from the incensed monarch. Dora Milaje members flanking his side rolled their shoulders back, waiting for nearby security to make a false move.
“Come closer,” T’Challa beckoned before pulling the doctor forward with a strong grip on his shoulder. When he was within whispering distance, the King leaned forward to deliver his message. “I will give you one chance to move before you are forcefully and painfully moved. Is this a thing that you want, Doctor?”
“No, sir.”
“KING!” T’Challa’s voice bounced off the walls loud enough to force a shriek for a nearby nurse. He stood to his full height to address the room. “I am King T’Challa, Son of King T’Chaka! My wife is here because of YOUR negligence! I will not ask again. Show me to her at once!”
Again, medical staff began a mad scramble to escort T’Challa down the long hallway toward his wife’s room. Each step brought forth a sense of dread, making the young king’s stomach churn with uncertainty.
Five years he spent away from his homeland.
Five years he spent unaware that his love had been relocated to the United States by his colleagues for her safety and protection.
And, with his absence, came turmoil and unrest that threatened to unravel the most important thread of his being.
He feared his decision to join the fight had come with more losses than victories.
A sharp left into a cold, soulless room nearly took T’Challa down at the knees. Okoye quickly extended an arm to keep the King upright until he was ready to proceed.
Though weak, Amandla smiled at T’Challa and beckoned for his presence.
“Hey, you,” she spoke, mirth still thick in her voice. “Long time no see, eh?”
T’Challa stood frozen, so she directed her conversation to a teary Okoye. “Cat got his tongue?”
“Ukumkanikazi, I do not think now is the time for joking.”
“I just lost my baby, General. I’d rather use my time to laugh, not cry. And to see my husband if he would join my bedside.” Amandla watched T’Challa slowly lift his eyes from the floor before calling for him again. “Come here, my love. Sit. Be with me.”
T’Challa took slow steps forward, his legs feeling like lead as he moved toward the chair positioned at the head of the bed. His hands covered her much smaller pair before his head dipped to pepper kisses on her knuckles. She smiled down at him then looked to Okoye.
“Leave us for a moment, General.”
Okoye offered wordless acknowledgement and a distant smile as she left the room with staff and Ayo in tow.
Silence quickly took over as Amandla watched T’Challa run his thumb along the Mining Tribe tattoos on the back of her hand.
“I’m so sorry,” he whispered without looking into her eyes. “I opened our borders. I invited them into our home. I left you. I’m so, so sorry, Flower.”
Amandla chuckled and rubbed the top of T’Challa’s head. “I ask you to leave me alone all the time and, when you finally do, I end up nearly dead from protecting our greatest resource. This is my fault and my fault only.”
“Our baby is gone.”
“Gone from this existence.” Amandla assured. T’Challa looked up at her with a quizzical look in his eyes. “She is still with us on the other side. Leading, guiding…protecting. Little Anathi. She is with us, remember?”
T’Challa closed his eyes to take a deep breath. “I remember.”
“I think she would’ve had your smile. Of course my natural knack for wit. It’s my most important contribution to the world, you know.”
“I wouldn’t say that,” T’Challa answered, half smiling while fiddling with Amandla’s wedding band. “You’re quite the beauty as well.”
“At least enough to capture the heart of a King, eh?”
“That didn’t capture my heart. It was only the cherry on top.”
Amandla in response to T’Challa’s compliment before blessing his forehead with a kiss. They sat in comfortable silence, both ghosting their fingers of Amandla’s stomach in a sad tribute to their daughter.
“T’Challa,” Amandla spoke after several minutes.
“Yes, My Love.”
“Please do not mistake my calmness as the absence of anger.” Her small hands cupped her husband’s face to bring him to eye level. A fierce fire burned inside both of them, transferred in a silent stare that spoke 1,000 words.
“I want them all dead. Every man, woman and child. Only blood can atone for the loss of our child. Let them know. Wakanda will see her revenge.”
T’Challa studied his wife’s face for any sign of trepidation but found none. She’d made her decision and, as her protector and husband, knew that the call of duty must be answered.
Leaning forward, he kissed her nose then lips before locking eyes again.
“You will have all that you desire. That is my promise.”
---------
Leaders from each global nation sat in the halls of the UN, chatter intertwining in the air to form senseless babble. The quarterly session was due to begin shortly, but the wait for Wakanda’s leader had become unbearable. Whispers of rumored sanctions and fines for King T’Challa’s lack of cooperation with vibranium’s resourcing had grown deafening amongst influential circles. Today was the day of reckoning.
All conversations ceased once the doors of the hall opened abruptly, revealing King T’Challa and the Dora Milaje with hardened expressions.
Their strides to the podium commanded attention and ire alike. It was no secret that the King and his country were less than welcomed by many of the political power players. That mattered not to T’Challa. He was there as the leader of his country, not to make allies.
Once he reached the podium, the meeting began.
“King T’Challa, when you brought Wakanda from the shadows into the public conversation, you swore to share resources with the rest of the world. You have failed at the promise.” The leader of the United Kingdom waited for a response from the King but received nothing in return. The leader of France began to speak.
“A failure to cooperate is against the oath we’ve taken. What makes Wakanda above reproach?” Her statement drew a scowl from King T’Challa as he regarded her with disgust. “We need vibranium to -”
“You need nothing from my people. You have taken more than enough. We will allow it no more.”
Audible gasps sounded around the room at T’Challa’s challenge. He stood and continued to speak.
“Your greed has cost Wakanda our way of life and an heir. My daughter was killed in your covert attack on our lab. You nearly took my wife. I owe you the heads of your countrymen on my General’s spear!
All eyes fixated on T’Challa as he commanded the center of the room. Reaching into his pocket, he tossed a tangled mess of bloodied French army dog tags in front of the ambassador. She shrunk back in terror.
“You took everything from me and, now, it’s my turn to do the same to you. Wakanda is coming with the fury of our ancestors. Prepare if you can. All those who wish to avoid conflict should make their allegiance known. As for the rest, you’ve been warned.”
Smoothing his suit, T’Challa took a final look at his adversaries before gesturing for the Dora Milaje to follow him out of the room.
He was a man of his word. The Queen shall get what she desires.

On laguz and Branded aging
I think a good question everyone wants to know is: how long do the laguz live? And the follow-up question is: how long do the Branded live?
Because I don’t want to clutter everyone’s feeds with long, nonsensical, barely coherent theories and rambling, I will discuss my answers to these questions after the cut. Also, unapologetic spoilers for FE9 and FE10 incoming.
If you want to know canon facts, there is next to nothing. For laguz, all we know is that Janaff is somewhere around 110 in Path of Radiance, and that the dragons live for a long time, barely aging once they reach a certain level of maturity.
Janaff: I used to be quite the daredevil before I grew into adulthood. Nothing ever seemed to please me. Shinon: How old are you, anyway? Janaff: I'm a bit over 110 years old. Shinon and Janaff: A Support, Path of Radiance
Nasir: It may be difficult for you beorc to believe, but... We of the dragon tribe live for a very, very long time. When we reach a certain maturity, we stop showing almost all signs of further aging. For example, do you remember Prince Kurthnaga whom you met in Goldoa? Ike: Yeah, he was a nice kid. Nasir: The prince is the youngest in all of Goldoa, yet for all his apparent youth, he's at least a hundred years old. Chapter 27, Path of Radiance
Beyond that? Absolutely nothing. As far as the Branded go, we get lots of other facts about them, but not about how they age beyond:
Stefan: You may have already started to notice. We age differently than the beorc. Of course, the specifics of it depend on the type of laguz blood that flows in your veins. Soren and Stefan: A Support, Path of Radiance
Micaiah: That must be it… Oh, Sothe, ever since he was small, he’s tried to act more grown up than the grown-ups… I’ve taken care of him so long, and still I’ve never seen him smile so easily before. Muarim: Hm… Watch what you say. Comments like that… They reveal that your appearance belies your true age. Micaiah: What are you-- Muarim: Among the laguz, there are those who detest and revile half-breeds such as yourself. They call you "parentless," and deny you any laguz heritage, honor, or dignity. Take due care. Chapter 1-7, Radiant Dawn
Micaiah: I’ve avoided people most of my life to conceal my brand...and my powers. But there’s no way to hide how very slowly I age. I just keep moving through Daein. The same holds true now... I won’t be able to stay in this army long. Chapter 1-F, Radiant Dawn
Stefan: One day, the laguz blood shows itself, marking the child’s body with a brand. How old is that girl, hmm? I don’t think she’s as young as she looks. The other curse is that we age differently from beorc. It depends on what laguz blood the child has, but it always slows how fast we age. Base Conversation 4-F-1: Visitor, Radiant Dawn
So, you know, slower than beorc, but nothing set in stone or factual about how old certain Branded are. That would be too convenient.
Fortunately, they released artbooks with profiles and information about the world that's not discussed in-game. Perhaps something in there?
One of the artbooks provides this delightful tidbit of information:
Tumblr media
Which, while useful, leaves something to be desired. It contradicts some in-game information, specifically by implying that Branded blood can be diluted to be more like beorc, whereas in the games, Branded seems to be a recessive gene that can skip generations and still have the same impact. I think this chart came from an earlier development idea, but wasn’t something that stuck the landing when Path of Radiance was released.
There was also a Q&A that was posted by Intelligent Systems after the release of Radiant Dawn regarding the lifespans of the laguz that show us what the development team was thinking after making both Tellius games (translated by the lovely amielleon)
Question: About how long are laguz lifespans? Answer: Compared to the beorc, the beast tribes' are about 5~6 times. The hawks and ravens of the bird tribe are nearly 10 times. The herons' are over a thousand years, and the dragons' are over two thousand years.
If you compare to the pre-Path of Radiance early development chart, this obviously shows they’ve extended it out a little bit for all of the tribes. The chart also cuts everyone off at 60 years old, and we know it is possible for humans to live longer than 60 years old, so the laguz must live much longer than that. (Nealuchi is designed to look around 72, so he's beating that average by a lot).
So anyway, where does that leave us? Well, we have a starting base, and we have a few facts we know for certain:
Janaff is a bit over 110 years old in Path of Radiance. Janaff was designed to look about 30 in both Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn. Janaff is 5 years older than Ulki, but Ulki was designed to look about 30 years old as well.
So, whatever answer I come up with, Hawks should look about 30 when they’re 105-113 (Ulki being 105 in Path of Radiance, and Janaff being 113 in Radiant Dawn).
We also know that Branded begin aging normally like a beorc, but then they start aging a lot slower. Soren and Zelgius both mention that they have recently noticed that they’re aging a lot slower than the beorc around them, and Stefan’s conversation with Soren seems to imply that Stefan knows this is a normal thing for Branded.
Stefan: You've grown quite good at hiding it. But, it's merely a matter of time before your heritage becomes...evident. Soren: ...Evident? Stefan: You may have already started to notice. We age differently than the beorc. Of course, the specifics of it depend on the type of laguz blood that flows in your veins. Soren: I thought I was aging normally... Well, until about three years ago. Soren and Stefan: A Support, Radiant Dawn
Zelgius: Lord Sage, I-- I realized some years ago that I was aging more slowly than others do. ???: And you wish to conceal that fact, don't you? Is that why you rarely remove your armor, even when indoors? Zelgius: Yes...but this ruse will not last indefinitely. In a few years, I will be forced to leave this army's service. Chapter 4-F-2, Radiant Dawn
Nasir says that “we reach a certain maturity, we stop showing almost all signs of further aging.” Combined with how the Branded believe they’re aging normally until they’re suddenly not, this statement leads me to believe that the laguz also probably age the same as beorc for the first few years of their lives and then age slower as they grow older, probably earlier and more extreme in the slow down than a Branded. The only fact I have to support myself is that laguz and beorc share the Zunanma as a common ancestor, and evolved separately from them, so it makes more sense to me that they age about the same when born.
I also hate the idea of a dragon baby being born and not being the equivalent of 1 year old until they’ve been alive for 17 years, so there’s that too.
As far as how long the Branded live, I don’t like this “dilution” mechanic of the early development chart. I much prefer the idea that the Branded age half as slowly as the laguz tribe/clan their blood comes from. I have no facts to support myself with, except that it feels right for Zelgius and Stefan to be much older than they appear to be than the dilution mechanic allows (Stefan is designed to be 29 in both games, and there’s no way he's only 35-38, and Zelgius is definitely older than 36-39, considering he looked like an adult before Greil left Daein and so he couldn’t have only been about 16-19 back then). And the chart was prepared by a Begnion noble, so obviously we have to ask what the bias of the writer was when Branded are considered a crime against the goddess that noble worships. (Not me questioning the integrity of a fictional scholar writing about fictional species.)
Anyway. If you just want to use the original chart despite the flaws I have with it and not think about complexities, the stronger/more physical clans live shorter lives than the weaker/more magical clans within the different tribes, and wolves feel somewhere between tigers and cats, so I would put them between those two, and here’s an updated chart with dilutions for all the different kinds of Branded. I’ve also added a max of 100 year life spans so you get a better feel for it. According to the chart, Janaff should be looking to be about 32 years old, not 30, but it’s not too far off to be considered non compliant with canon. I shouldn’t have to explain to the website that spawned Spiders Georg how averages and outliers work.
Tumblr media
But if you want to go deeper, like I did, I will. The Q&A shows that the developers later felt that the different tribes would live a lot longer than even the 100 year old max allows according to the early development chart. The beast tribes don’t live to be about 500-600 years old, the hawks and ravens don’t get to be near 1,000, the herons don’t exceed 1,000, and the dragons don’t exceed 2,000.
So, doubling down on the idea that the laguz are born and age like beorc and then slow down, I think the best time for this to start would be around puberty because that's when all the changes occur in the body, and then the older they get, the slower they age. This also ties into Nasir’s “reach a certain maturity” statement from before, as the beginning and end of puberty mark the greatest maturity shifts in the growth process (Though, as a woman in her 30s, I would just like to throw in that I am firmly of the opinion that no one IRL is mature until they’re in their mid to late 20s).
I think for the Branded to only be able to notice it a few years ago when they’re older in appearance, their laguz blood might not start impacting them until they're post puberty or at the end of puberty. There are almost exactly 0* canon facts to go off of, but it feels the most logical to me to fit in with what all the characters say in game. *Soren is designed to look 16 in Path of Radiance and look at Zelgius when he's saying that quote I had before:
Tumblr media
I realize by anime aesthetic, Zelgius is almost definitely meant to look 10 or something like that, but Fire Emblem tends to skew slightly closer to realistic ages...sometimes...maybe...in my dreams...
I bumped up the factors from the original chart for everyone but the dragons because they were all so far from what the Q&A* said they should end up like and then I decided that there were three phases to account for:
Beorc aging: From birth to the onset puberty for full laguz, and from birth to the end of puberty for Branded
Moderately slow aging: For the duration of puberty for full laguz, and from the end of puberty to about “25” for Branded (which is about when the mind is “fully developed” in humans)
Slower aging: Lasts for the rest of their life, aging continues to slow down the older the individual becomes.
*For the hawks and ravens, I couldn’t get them up to living anywhere close to 1,000 years the Q&A implied without drastically not meeting the requirement that Janaff and Ulki look around 30ish in the 105-113 range, so the in-game facts have to take precedence over the Q&A facts.
Tumblr media
If you want something a lot more detailed, I will add the charts below that show each laguz type by each “year” of their life. Since afab individuals and amab individuals hit puberty at different ages, the chart shows that too for the averages: from 12-14 for afab individuals, and 13-15 for amab individuals. Obviously individual characters might go through the different phases at different times, but the charts below are averages and guidelines.

I apologize for the clutter and quality of these last charts.

The Buffy re-watch: S1E6 (part 2)
The Pack
Giles looks kind of ashamed of himself when Buffy is right about something, after he's dismissed her concerns.
The Masai tribe (not to be confused the the real Maasai tribe In Kenya and northern Tanzania) was mentioned by the sketchy zookeeper at the beginning of the episode, like that wasn't a hint for the audience later. (Sarcasm).
Very graphic and disturbing images of unchecked animal possession. Well, shit.
Xander learning from Angel in how to be a creepy stalker.
With Flutie being the principal of Sunnydale High, he would have seen some shit right? It doesn't seems like he knows about the supernatural threats that plague the town, but Snyder does. Either way, he didn't deserve his fate.
And the creepy just get worse. Xander goes into SA mode. I hate SA/R in TV shows and films, I find it hard to sit though and watch. While this scene is mild, compared to a certain scene in season 6, I still hate watching it. But I will get on to the other problem I have with this later.
What happened to the other possessed students after this episode? They ate a pig and a human being while they were alive. They couldn't have just carried on as normal, and no amount of therapy could help them.
Hyena Xander trying to trick Willow into letting him out makes the point that their lives didn't need much saving before Buffy arrived. We later find out this to be bullshit in the season 3 episode 'The Wish'.
Bad time to try and make friends Giles, especially with sus zookeepers.
Possessed people terrorising random families. Those low house prices better be worth it.
To knock someone out, you need to hit their head, right? Not their back. So how did the zookeeper knock Giles out with a blow to the back and a slump to the floor?
When was the zookeeper planning to do the possession? And I would be pissed too if a bunch of high school bullies beat me to the punch.
We can totally see the stunt double for Buffy in a couple of shots, sometimes it's so noticeable.
And the day and people are saved, except the zookeeper who does have a name, it's Weirick. I had to look it up because I don't remember it being said once.
We get our first reference to Snyder, who won't appear until 'Puppet Show'.
Okay, to the complaint I have regarding Xander. If he genuinely forgot what happened to him while possessed, I could understand not wanting to tell him about the SA. It was the animal spirit in control, not him. However, he does remember and is only feigning amnesia. This is what I have a problem with. If he said he remembered and apologised, he would have been forgiven, because again he was not in control. Buffy and Willow would have understood, forgiven him and moved on. But he chose to pretend to forget so he doesn't suffer any potential consequences. He took the coward way out of the situation. I get that he might feel ashamed, he tried to SA his friend/unrequited love interest and belittled and bullied his best friend, that is something to feel ashamed about, but instead of be a decent human being about it, he just pretends to forget so he can have a get out of jail free card. That pisses me off. If he owned up to what happened and apologised, Buffy and Willow would have just blamed it on the animal spirit and left it at that. He would have been fine. Because they probably would never want to talk about it again either. It was cowardly and stupid and I lost respect for Xander for that.
And Giles protects Xander, likely because he feels sorry for him and is trying to be helpful. But my original point still stands.
Okay, episode and rant over. If you can't tell by now, I'm not a fan of Xander. I didn't mind him when I was young, but now that I'm older he irks me. He has his good moments, like when he is actually being funny, but other times he angers me.
Tomorrow, we delve into the beginnings of Bangel.

hello! your zutara posting today has finally motivated me to ask this question because I came to atla very late(last year, to be specific) and I Love It Very Much but am 1000% out of the loop as far as why what remains of fandom (at least that I've seen among my friends) is so very strongly zutara. I'm not opposed to it per se I just don't really know what has driven it to apparently be such a popular ship? can you help me understand and maybe convert me a little bit?
Hey!! Your ICON! :D I can try but I’m not sure how coherent I’ll be; however I AM sure someone a lot more competent will be willing to add to this. Either way, I’m glad you asked because my plan was to drag down as many people as possible with me.
*smacks the hood of zutara* this baby can fit so much mutual love and support!

This got so long, I’m so sorry. I don’t know how to put it under a cut on mobile and it already got deleted once so I’m scared to mess with it lol. Moving on.
I’m gonna start this with a disclaimer that im on mobile so formatting is tricky and I’m also really new to atla in that I only completed my first watch through in like 2019??? So some of my info is all just based on what I’ve picked up from Discourse 👀 so anyway the sparknotes version: zutara was wildly popular from the beginning. To the point where the atla crew internally disagreed on which ship should be endgame. (Ex. Bryke [showrunners] asked the writers to rewrite The Southern Raiders to make Zuko seem less ideal for Katara than Aang [which failed, depending on who you ask]; the animation team purposefully created a visual parrallel between Oma and Shu in the Cave of Two Lovers and Zuko and Katara in the catacombs under Ba Sing Se in the Crossroads of Destiny; etc.)
Tumblr media
The ship was popular enough that Bryke actually chose to display zk fanart at a con for the sole purpose of mocking the fans, but that’s neither here nor there. The entire episode Ember Island Players, while a love letter to/parody of the whole show, was an opportunity to address zutara’s viability as a canon pairing (while, again, mocking zutaras for romanticizing that catacombs scene). Point is! It’s always been popular but with it not being endgame, there’s got to be something that’s given it staying power.
And that’s honestly got to do with three things: their dynamic, thematic cohesion, and potential.
(You know what... you know what, it’s four things. The fourth is they’re so aesthetically pleasing together and individually. Like, they’re just good looking people [specifically when they’re grown but they’re also cute kids] and that absolutely doesn’t hurt) (but it’s not the Point, it’s just nice to point out sometimes)
The dynamic is hard to get into without also looking at the canon pairings, but I think I can do that without unnecessary bashing. It’s just that part of the magic of zutara is really highlighted by what they give to each other that their other relationships don’t.
First off, it’s classic enemies to (would be) lovers. The absolute truest form of it. It’s not too different from how CS started out: a rogue antagonist with a job to do—but no personal vendetta against the future love interest—who is deeply and emotionally invested in his personal storyline (revenge/redemption) with little regard for how it effects other people after his entire life and genuine good nature are marred by suffering, and a fierce warrior girl with a strong moral compass and her own personal investment in stopping him (protect her family and save the world doing it). Obviously frustration and animosity grew between them by the nature of them being on opposing sides, but that just lends itself to the sweetness of their later reconciliation.
The thing is that while they’re wildly different on the surface (he’s a hot-headed prince of a fascist regime who is trying to capture the Avatar to please his father; she’s a nurturing daughter of the chief who is trying to protect and train the Avatar in order to topple his father’s throne) they find out that they have so much more in common both in their experiences and their personalities.
(What follows is an excessive use of the word “both” and I’m sorry about that)(I can edit it. I can do that. That IS an option............)
They both have an innate sense of justice that they are determined to see done (zuko, at the war meeting, sticking up for the Earth Kingdom kid when the guards torment his family, choosing not to steal from the pregnant couple despite his circumstances, abiding by his word to leave the SWT should Aang come willingly, etc.; katara, literally.... at any point). They both have pretty one-track minds at accomplishing certain goals once they’ve put their mind to it, regardless of a lack of support in that endeavor (it goes without saying I guess, but zuko’s entire hunt; katara’s determination to get the earth benders to fight back, her determination to absolutely destroy Pakku until he agrees to teach her, etc.). They both lost their mothers at young ages. Their worlds are war-torn and traumatizing to them both, if in different ways, but that ultimately forces them to grow up too quickly to be wholly independent individuals. They both have issues with their fathers (for WILDLY different reasons, but). They both hold extreme prejudices that they need to learn to overcome (which ties into thematic cohesion)(bit like Lizzie and Darcy in that way but magnified by a million). They’re both extremely emotional and empathetic—which can and often does result in loud outbursts. Katara’s a bit better adjusted and can temper her anger for longer than S1 Zuko can, but they both feel that anger deeply and have no compunctions expressing it (Katara is, usually, more justified, particularly in S1. Again, S1 Zuko is severely maladjusted but at the point when they could’ve feasibly become a couple, he’s so much better off with the way he carries himself). They both struggle with feelings of inferiority in their bending abilities when confronted with prodigal benders like Aang and Azula, but have the work ethic required to double down and become two of the most powerful benders in the three remaining nations. This is a little more minor but it is a parrallel that appeals to some shippers that they both have these alter egos in the Painted Lady (notably fire nation coded) and the Blue Spirit (water tribe coded) that are pretty different from who they are day-to-day and are useful in accomplishing a purpose that they as themselves cannot.
(I’m.... I just realized that this could potentially get very long. Should I have made a slide show with bullet points??????)
Anyway, similar. I know there’s more but there’s literally so much to love about zutara that I’ll drive myself a little crazy trying to compile all the ways they’re similar. (Just gonna say that at this exact moment I went back to add more similarities.... so okay then)
Once they’ve reconciled, we see how all of these things only lend themselves to a deeper intimacy together than they share with literally anyone else. There’s a steady partnership that positions them as the mom/dad of the gaang, while also providing the support necessary to allow the other to not have to carry so much responsibility. A lot of zutaras will point out how zuko is actually depicted doing the more domestic chores that are normally relegated to Katara once he joins the gaang, since the others in the group are two 12-year-olds and sokka. The one that sticks out the most is how he makes tea for the group and then serves them, while Katara is able to just relax with her friends around the fire. Fanon expands upon this a lot to Zuko helping with the laundry or the cooking or whatever else needs doing since he, as a once-refugee, is used to doing his own domestic tasks. Before Zuko joined, Katara was the one mothering everyone, sewing for them, cooking for them, etc. She’s always tending to the needs of the group, and that includes emotionally. She does the emotional labor for the gaang 99% of the time, but when she’s the one falling apart, she’s usually doing it alone and without the comfort that she normally provides for others. Until Zuko. And that’s before they’re even friends.
Which is WHY people romanticize the catacombs of Ba Sing Se so much. Katara is verbally attacking Zuko out of her own righteous anger but also her own prejudice when Zuko, surprisingly, chooses to be vulnerable with her. He’s been on a journey that’s opened his eyes a bit, but he’s never actively chosen to expose the rawest parts of his past to anyone. But for some reason he chooses to do that with Katara of all people. While she’s yelling at him. He sees her humanity, and for once can look past his prejudice and empathize with her. And this time, when she breaks down, she gets to be comforted. Katara normally talks about her mother when she’s trying to explain to someone else that she sees and understands they’re pain, as a form of comfort to them. Here, Zuko uses the exact same tactic. He sees her and he understands. And for zuko? He’s not being shut down. He’s allowed to articulate his pain regarding his mother without being ignored and made to internalize it, and he’s allowed to process how he feels about his scar out loud without being told that he deserved it. And then he lets her touch his scar, something we’ve seen him actively avoid before. He’s completely open to her and she’s completely open to him and all it took was one five minute conversation. She was about to use the little bit of Spirit water that she had, that she was saving for something Important, to heal the scar that still daily causes him pain just because they had, somehow, connected.
Plus there’s the whole parallel to the star-crossed lovers forbidden from one another, a war divides their people—
Tumblr media
And then zuko messes up, he regresses, he gets what he wants and he HATES it. And the sense of justice he had as a child has been restored to him against his will and he can’t think of anything he wants to do more than the Right Thing, so he joins team avatar. Before he does that though, we get to see his relationship with Mai, which is where comparison really comes in. And what we see is Zuko, fresh off of his encounter with Katara in the catacombs, trying to be emotionally honest with Mai... and getting shut down and dismissed. Which is just how Mai is and it’s fine, but not for Zuko. Still, he keeps trying, and he keeps getting ignored or scoffed at or yelled at. Which is really a larger symbol for how he doesn’t fit in his old life anymore, but again that’s about thematic cohesion. He tries to articulate his anxieties about returning home, he tries to make romantic gestures, he tries to explain how morally conflicted he’s feeling—and Mai diverts to some kind of physical affection to shut him up and a parting comment that is pretty much always, in essence, “I don’t wanna talk about this.” So they don’t. On the other hand, once zuko and Katara are friends, we see him again emotionally distraught and caught up in his anxieties about facing Iroh, and it’s Katara who comes to him and listens to him and comforts and encourages him.
Similarly, we have Aang clamming up and getting uncomfortable whenever Katara shows any negative emotion, usually resulting in him making excuses or running away. Or, in the case of the Southern Raiders, lecturing her on how she needs to just let go of her anger about her mother’s murder. People have talked this episode to death and usually better than I ever could, so imma... keep it brief. There’s a serious disconnect between Aang and Katara in his ability to empathize with Katara and her needs that has her tamping down her vulnerability and amping up her anger. He tells her that he was able to forgive his people’s genocide and appa’s kidnapping (petnapping? Theft??), which is blatantly not true but also not an entirely equal parrallel to Katara’s situation, and continues making these little remarks throughout the episode. But it’s Zuko that Katara opens up to. It’s with him that she’s able to talk about the most traumatic day of her life, and it’s with him that she’s able to get the closure she needs, cementing their bond as friends and partners. This disagreement between Aang and Katara is then... never resolved. They just never bring it up and hear what the other is saying.
There’s a fic called The Portraits of Ember Island that has a line that so completely sums up the heart of the matter for why people love their dynamic. For context, zuko has woken up early to help Katara with the cooking and they spend the whole time just letting one another talk, and zuko stops to ask why she always just lets him talk. And so she stops to ask why he’s always helping, and it goes as follows:
Tumblr media
There’s just... so much mutual support! Trust! Intimacy!! And it just continues like that from the Southern Raiders on, listening to each other, advising each other, watching each other’s backs! And then! Literally saving each other’s lives!! I will never be over the last Agni kai. Not ever. Zuko may have been willing to jump in front of lightning for anyone, but he actually did it for Katara. And in a show, that’s the thing that really matters. It’s a fulfilled trope usually exclusively applied to romantic pairings, and it ended up applying to Zuko and Katara. And then she ran out into the middle of a fight with tunnel vision just to get to him.
Tumblr media
Also!! Also Zuko pushing Katara out of the way of the falling rocks at the Western Air Temple!! And Katara catching him as he fell from the war balloon that he fought Azula on!! Before they’re even getting along, they’re the ones reaching for each other. They come to this place of equal ground, as partners, who watch each other’s backs, call each other out but still listen attentively and understand, and provide the support that the other has been sorely lacking up until they knew each other (whether that be from lack of effort or lack of understanding from others, or an unwillingness to accept it for themselves).
Then, trailing along under the surface of this, we see the themes of the show totally embodied by Zuko and Katara as individuals and in their relationship to one another. There’s a YouTuber, sneezyreviews, who has a, like, 2-hour explanation on why she not only loves zutara but also believes that their endgame would’ve actually elevated the writing of atla to new levels particularly because of thematic cohesion and resolved character arcs. It’s the zutara dissertation I never knew I needed, and it’s funny and eloquent and effective, so I’m just going to sum up her section on thematic cohesion to the best of my abilities and then link it for whenever you have the time. And I HIGHLY recommend it, especially if you want a full understanding of what makes zutara so great and gives it such longevity.
Guru pathik has a line that goes something like this: separation is an illusion; things that seem different are just two parts of the same whole. Iroh also tells Zuko something similar: balance and strength are achieved when the different nations come together and influence one another and celebrate what makes them each unique. And this lesson is a massive central arc that both Zuko and Katara go through, moving past a black-and-white, good guys-vs-bad guys, us-vs-them mentality and into a greyer, more nuanced view of the world. Zuko sees the fire nation from an entirely new perspective and while he still loves and hopes for his nations future, he surrenders his blind loyalty to them in exchange for an unflinching loyalty to peace and love. Katara too had to come to terms with the fact that cruel people exist in the earth kingdom and water tribes, while some fire nation citizens are just regular, kind people who also need and deserve to have someone speak on their behalf. And this is honed in directly on how they view each other. They grow in their individual journeys to be open to the humanity in the other and then, once they’ve found that, they’re able to grow more in compassion for others in a beautiful feedback loop. And this is all matched in the symbolism repeatedly and intentionally associated with them in canon: sun and moon, fire and water, yin and yang, Oma and Shu who found love despite their warring nations. Their individual arcs are completed in each other and complement the themes of atla beautifully.
The canon pairs... just don’t. Which, again, is fine. But the very things that give atla longevity and popularity are anchored in zutara. Kat@ang doesn’t accomplish this. They’re... nice. Sweet. Especially when you erase a good portion of their interactions in S3. It could’ve been just a sweet love story. (Personally, the dynamic between toph and aang accomplish the same thing that zutara does, with complementary personalities that fulfill the theme of opposites blending in harmony) M@iko, on the other hand, is less sweet but I think wasn’t even supposed to last. Zuko’s relationship with Mai seems to represent his relationship with his old life as a whole. He can’t be emotionally vulnerable, he’s goaded into abusing his privileges, his agency and opinions aren’t respected. They just don’t have common ground with which to discuss anything that matters, so they don’t. As far as themes, the relationship doesn’t fit with atla. It’s zuko returning to and sticking with what is (on the surface) like him, what’s expected. Fire nation with fire nation. Fluid water bender with the flexible air bender. Like with like, separated from what is different and challenging and complementary.
And all of these things combined of course lead to the potential for the ship. I don’t know how familiar you are with the post-atla canon but... well, miss “I will never turn my back on people who need me”, miss “I don’t want to heal! I want to fight!” ends up living quietly in the SWT as a designated healer who turns a blind eye to the water tribe civil war happening right outside her front door. Which can be fine! People change! Some people just wanna stay inside. I just wanna stay inside! But the potential future for zutara is so much more satisfying, with Katara becoming the most unconventional Fire Lady the uppity old cads who are stuck on the old ways have ever seen. Fanon has her serving as a voice for the other nations within a kingdom at the point of its biggest political upheaval, as a confidante to Zuko who can actually help him while he’s trying to figure out how to move forward and make reparations. They have the opportunity, together, to accomplish what they both have set on their hearts to fight for: positive change that lends itself to harmony and balance. And the steambabies! A popular headcanon is that their firstborn daughter, the crown princess, is actually a waterbender, which causes such an uproar among the people who are adamantly clinging to the old ways. It’s just a future full of potential to be forces for good together, full of trust, intimacy, joy. The exact era of peace and love and balance that zuko announces that he intends to ring in with the start of his reign as Fire Lord is, again, magnified by the very personal zutara relationship. And we love to see it.
tl;dr zutara isn’t for everyone. Some people just don’t vibe with it. Some are nostalgic. Some love the canon they grew up with. Some have been disappointed for years. Some just see themselves in other characters and want their happiness instead. Whatever the reason, that’s fine. But for me, I love the way these two, from the moment they give each other a fair chance, are able to lower their walls and prejudices to see the other for the kindred spirits they are. They see each other’s humanity, and their response is to pour out love and support and compassion. I love that they’re a power couple in battle. I love the symbolism and, honestly, soulmatism that colors their every interaction. I love that they embody the whole storyline of atla in their relationship and how it develops, which is notably why their seasonal arcs always culminate in each finale with how they relate to one another. I love that zuko adopting a waterbending move is what actually saves his life and then katara’s. I love the chemistry! And I love the future they could’ve had, instead of the ones they were given.
So, in conclusion: I just think they’re neat and I hope you do too, at least a little bit. Even if it’s just respectfully from a disinterested distance cause you do you. And now here is the video I mentioned. I’m sorry this post got so long and then I gave you an even longer homework assignment, but I can’t recommend it enough. She says it all better than I can.

@skip-the-clumsy-dragon oh, where do I even begin with Hahn? Well, this started with Hama, so let's get into her character and portrayal real quick.
Hama, as a concept, is not perfect. I'm getting this out of the way so naluaģmiut can stop telling me that I, an actual eskimo, should be angrier about an eskimo-coded character in a nicktoon. She's a sort of bad guy of the week like the prison warden or the pirates from Book One. What ends up happening to her is not given any weight by the story itself or the characters. Now with that said, she's still portrayed in a more nuanced and complex light than most Native and Native-coded characters who seem to fall into this Injun Joe archetype. Her wrongdoing is clearly meant to be read as a result of pain and trauma. We, the audience, resonate with Katara's anguish at trying to stop her. Katara has a good heart. She doesn't want to hurt this woman who has been through so much, one of her own whom she wanted to trust. Hama is clearly of the mindset that "I had to live through this and you will too." It kind of hurts to watch because it's so close to my reality.
Was it their story to tell? Not really, and it shows despite their best efforts. Would it have improved exponentially with a Native writer who better understands situations like these? Most definitely. But even if it was the dumpster fire people keep telling me it is, that doesn't mean there's nothing of value to be found in the ashes.
The same really can't be said with Hahn.
There's no complexity. No nuance. He's a dick to Sokka, the Good Native Boy, not to underline the themes or ground the world through consequences (the way Hama's backstory and motivations do), but to show off how good character development looks on him. As if the story itself is telling us "Sokka used to me a misogynist, aren't you glad he's not anymore?"
It just feels like the writers are trying to have their cake and eat it too. On the one hand we have two brown characters who belong to a tribe and are culturally associated clothing and items made of animal skins and they are well written and dimensional. We're given just enough info that we can figure out their emotional motivations and get a real feel for them as people. We got characters from their tribe, who get much less screentime but there's nothing to suggest Katara and Sokka don't love them. And then we get Stodgy Elder Man who uses Tradition and Culture to justify his Blatant Sexism in the form of Pakku, and Young Brave Stereotype in the form of Hahn.
2005 was a different time, I get it, but really?
Outwardly presenting as a douche that thinks to highly of one's self does not need to mean that this character is bad or uninteresting. Zuko was a fandom darling even early on, and not without reason. The whole Arrogant Warrior with just a hint of Xenophobia thing, though? With no context to ground or justify it? That's just the popular image people have of Native men. That's why you get people reacting so badly when you bring up Natives and land stewardship. That's why people act like they've been attacked when Natives ask others to stop using their iconography. "I'm honoring you" they say, donning redface and acting as if ferociously violent to an enemy. They're supporting their team and calling it "honoring" because they can't think of us as anything but spirits of nigh animalistic territorial instinct with our pride in our cultures being akin to nationalism.
But nobody really talks about this because racism against Natives is a tricky subject and it's easier to tie it in with misogyny. That's not a judgment or a call out. I get it. I have trouble finding the words sometimes. Going "boo, patriarchy" in regards to this sort of thing can feel like you contributed to the conversation without offending or putting anyone on the spot. I won't fault anyone for that, but here's something to consider.
Native boys watch the show too. My brothers and male cousins grew up on it. This show everyone and their mother has praised for being so culturally sensitive. Native boys watch this show and they get Hahn.

Oh my heart
Summary: Lin never expected to have a soulmate, in a world where your mark appears whenever your soulmate is born she grew up completely blank. So when she’s thirty and it finally etches itself around her arm, she vows to never be with the one meant only for her.
A/N: there is an age gap so if that's not your thing, then please don’t read. This will be a two, maybe three parter and the reader is Korra’s older sister who is also a waterbender, besides that I’ve tried to keep any physical descriptions of her as vague as possible.
Word count: 4k
Tumblr media
Lin was terrified. Something she had longed for her entire life had finally appeared but at the worst possible time, those strange words etched onto her forearm stared back at her in a taunting manner, making fun of her new attempt at happiness. You wished for me all your life, aren’t you pleased? The voice in the back of her head taunted, but she wasn’t. A moment meant to be filled with joy was one drenched in dread. Lin had finally accepted her feelings for Tenzin, despite him having had his soulmate mark since he was sixteen. Her glances grew longer, her smile seemed reserved only for him, and she finally felt happy, until now of course. Thirty, that’s how old Lin was, which meant she was thirty years older than her soulmate which seemed wrong, disgusting even, so Lin did what she thought best, she burnt it off. She blamed it on a work-related incident when asked, a pesky firebending criminal got a little to close and she paid the price. No one knew she did it to herself in the darkness of her apartment with tears on her face, a hint of regret gnawing at her heart.
Two months later, Tenzin asked Lin out on a date and despite that nagging feeling that this was so wrong, she accepted. After a few months Tenzin made her forget about the burnt skin on her forearm, the shameful secret she’d take to the grave. She felt happy, so happy, she felt loved and accepted, like maybe she had a shot at a happily ever after despite his mark and her own. Lin knew he’d choose her, knew he loved her, and had nothing to worry about, so she laid her head on his chest as they basked in the sun on Air Temple Island.
                                                            -----
“You can’t force me into wanting kids!” Lin shouted, her hands waving around as she glared at Tenzin, his usual calm demeanor seemed to crack, his voice rising as he shouted back “I’m the last air bender there is! I have to keep the line going, I have to repopulate my kind!”
“I would be a terrible mother, I hate kids and I’d have to leave my job for at least nine months, I just made Chief!” Tenzin pinched the bridge of his nose, his pale complexion turning red with frustration, he loved how dedicated she was to her job, but it seemed to be all she cared about since getting promoted.
“I think we need a break from each other, maybe a week or t-”. Her eyes widened in horror at his words, her hand's grip at her hair in frustration as she cuts him off “fine, but I am coming back in a week and we are working this out for good, I’m tired of this argument.” Without letting him say another word, she stormed out and made her way back to republic city.
As the week dragged on, Lin put her colleagues through hell. Slamming doors so hard the glass on them shattered, an even shorter fuse than normal, she even fired two of her best detectives for trying to ask her what was wrong. Her apartment seemed cold, her nights seemed never-ending and an undeniable sense of dread clawed its way into her heart like she knew he was slipping away. Maybe she could have one kid, to make him happy and keep the air benders going. If it was an earth bender then fine, she’d have another, but she wouldn’t quit her job, wouldn’t loosen up on the hours and Tenzin would understand, right? He’d just be so happy to be a father that he wouldn’t care, he’d always respected her work before, what was to stop him after a kid or two?
She caved, she decided to go back to air temple island on the fifth day, a sense of determination to fix their relationship fueled each step and she tried to dismiss any fear she had of becoming a mother as she made her way up the steps to where she’d known Tenzin would be. In her state, she didn’t notice the pitying looks the acolytes sent her way, all she cared about was finding him. When she found him in the courtyard, she thought nothing of the young woman speaking to Tenzin with a wide grin but when she put her hand on his shoulder mid-laugh, Lin paused. Tenzin noticed her then, a million emotions flashed through his eyes before his shoulders sagged and a sorrowful expression settled on his face, and somehow, she knew.
Who could blame her when she wreaked havoc on a place she once called her sanctuary, when she wished misery on him before leaving her destruction behind, her fists clenched tight as the best thing she ever had slipped through her fingers.
                                                           -----
“Korra!” a feminine voice shouted from behind Tenzin, you pushed past him and ran forward to hug the avatar in the interrogation room, murmuring something to her in a furious tone. Lin rolled her eyes as she looked over at Tenzin who said smoothly “Lin, you are looking radiant as usual.”
“Cut the garbage Tenzin” she replied in an annoyed tone “why is the avatar in republic city? I thought you were supposed to be moving down to the south pole to train her.” you, who came in with Tenzin let go of Korra and walked over to stand by him, your arms crossed over your chest.
“It was too cold for his bald head” you answered right as Tenzin opened his mouth to speak “now why is my sister in so much trou-”. Lin tuned the rest of her words out as shock slammed into her like a rock wall. No. This wasn’t meant to happen, she’d scorched off any chance with her soulmate twenty years ago, or so she thought. But this… this twenty? Yes, a twenty-year-old water tribe girl with brows furrowed, and an expectant look on her face was it. You were what sometimes kept her up at night when she was so lonely it felt like the feeling would surely eat her up as Lin imagined some faceless figure who loved Lin with all their heart, someone who would never leave her.
“Lin?” Tenzin asked, putting his hand on her shoulder which successfully pulled her out of the raging ocean that was her thoughts, no not ocean, definitely nothing water-related. Lin looked into Tenzin's eyes, completely ignoring her one chance at happiness.
“Just get her out of my sight and keep her out of trouble” she practically growled out before storming off. Her heart was racing so fast she’d thought it’d surely give up any second now, maybe she should have known that her hasty decisions from her past would one day come back to sucker punch her in the gut.
“Well that was weird” Lin heard you say behind her as she continued to rush away from you before she accidentally said something. Lin vowed then that she would never say a single word to you. It was better this way anyway, who would want her? Bitter, old, scarred Lin who was practically married to her job and hated all things romantic ever since Tenzin crushed her heart beneath his shoe.
                                                           -----
She learned that your name was y/n a few days later, she heard Korra call out to you at the gala and when Lin followed Korra’s excited figure and her eyes landed on her soulmate, the wind was successfully knocked out of her for the second time since meeting y/n. You were wearing a deep blue satin dress that went down to the floor with a blue sheer shoulder shawl that had silver snowflakes embroidered onto it. Your hair was down instead of up, and you had a small amount of makeup on, just a bit of rouge and red lipstick. Lin thought it was the perfect amount, any more and it might distract someone from your beautiful eyes, or your enchanting smile. Her heart began to pound despite her desperate attempt at keeping her emotions in check. A large part of her hated this, hated you, and what this feeling blooming in her chest meant.
When Bolin came up to you and threw an arm over your shoulder, which caused you to laugh, Lin remembered that it would never happen. She shoved her feelings down and turned away from you as her thoughts went from how beautiful you were to how you would never love her.
Later on in the evening, Tarlock calls Lin over and she sees you peek around Korra to eye her curiously, a look of intrigue settles on your features as Lin pushes down any feelings she has at the fact that you’re looking at her and it feels like her whole body is on fire under your stare. “I believe you and avatar Korra have already met” Tarlock looks over at her with that sly look of his that she’s already determined means he’s up to no good.
“Just because the city is throwing you this big to do, don’t think you’re something special. You’ve done absolutely nothing to deserve this” she says to Korra, leaning down a bit to glare at the young avatar. Your curious gaze turns to one of annoyance as you glare at Lin. “Hey! Who gave you the right to be mean to my little sister,” you step in front of Korra almost protectively, as you stare her down. Don’t speak to her, look away, don’t reply, she tells herself. Lin turns on her feet and walks off, trying to seem as if she doesn’t care about what you said. “Why does she always ignore me?” she hears you say in an exasperated tone before she loses your voice over the loud music playing nearby.
                                                           -----
When Tenzin stands next to Lin at the pro-bending arena with you by his side, she’s not surprised. It seems the universe has decided to continuously throw you in her face, dangling you teasingly despite knowing her decision regarding your bond. You're holding a bag of fire flakes as you eagerly watch your sisters match, but soon your once excited expression turns to annoyance once the game starts. The Wolf Bats tipped the referee off. Lin wants to go beat the referee up until he starts being fair, just to see you smile once more.
“C’mon! This is bullshit” you shout as the Wolf Bats gain another point. Lin can’t help but notice the way your nose scrunches up as you continue to shout at the referee or how your hair which originally was pushed behind your ears has come loose and is framing your face so beautifully. Her left hand unconsciously grazes over her armor where her burn mark is as she watches you, completely tuning the game out. As Tenzin goes to shout something alongside you, his eyes catch Lin staring at you with a look of longing, he takes a step closer to Lin causing her to tear her eyes away from you and back to the match.
“Lin....” Tenzin begins but she clears her throat and mutters out a sharp “drop it.” To which Tenzin does, for now. Later on, as the match intensifies, Lin says “I can’t believe your sweet-tempered father was reincarnated into that girl, she’s tough as nails.” Lin doesn’t see it, but you smile at her words before deciding to tune out the rest of the conversation between the two, too focused on your sister to care.
You're practically seething at the outcome of this botched game, fire flakes are flying out of the bag as you shout in anger, not noticing the figure approaching with sinister intentions. By the time you do, it's because you're in excruciating pain as something electrifies you, your vision blurs and you make out Lin dropping onto the floor. The figure who electrocuted you steps over your body, you reach out to the Airbender, trying to warn him but nothing comes out of your mouth as he falls to the floor beside you. Soon your eyes droop closed due to the pain despite trying your hardest to stay awake.
When Lin awakens her muscles feel like they're about to give out and she lets out a weak groan as she slowly goes to stand up. Her eyes land on you the second her vision is no longer a blur and her heart fills with panic as she sees an equalist take you into their arms. She stumbles forward, not fully awake, and catches the attention of your capture. You let out a pained groan, in your unconscious state, the sound tugs at her heart and she’s suddenly filled with boiling rage. The equalist is shaking as he continues to stumble backward, another appears to help him take you away and without a second thought Lin shoots out her wires and wraps them around both of their ankles, she gives them a harsh yank which causes them to fall to the ground with a loud thud, for good measure she cuffs them to the floor, warping the metal of the floor beneath them around their wrists and ankles. You land on top of your capture, your eyes begin to flutter behind your lids and you finally stir awake. Pain wraps around your muscles, in your head you think maybe it's best to just lay still, momentarily forgetting about your situation.
You let out a whimper, knocking Lin out of her frozen state as she had gazed at you. Lin rushes forward and wraps an arm around your waist as she pulls you up onto your feet, you open your eyes, blinking the blurriness out of your eyesight. Lin takes you over to the railing as Tenzin also begins to regain consciousness and she props you up against the metal railing. You stare up at her in confusion, your mind is buzzing a mile a minute, not only at the situation at hand but at how her arms felt wrapped around you. “Uhm… Thanks for that.”
“Amon probably ordered them to kidnap you to hurt Korra” she replies, not realizing what she’s just done. Your eyes widen in shock at her words but before she can even notice your shocked state an explosion sets off behind you, sheets of metal from the bending platform go flying and she wraps her arms around you, forcing you to duck down so she can shield you with her body. You pull up a wave of water to protect you from oncoming flames. The heat of the steam from the water causes you both to begin sweating before the flames from the explosion recede only seconds later. You let go of the water, suddenly the discovery of Lin’s secret doesn’t seem so important as you think of your sister. When you passed out she was in the water below, surely she’s somewhere safe, right?
As if to answer your question, Korra appears as she hurtles herself up into the air with a large twisting waterspout. As it begins to falter and then completely goes out you let out a shout filled with terror “Korra!” Lin quickly gets up and shoots her metal wire out towards the roof to send her flying across the arena towards the avatar, before Korra can hit the fiery platform below, she shoots out a second wire to her waist and with all her might yanks her up into the air.
You stand beside Tenzin with wide eyes and bated breath, suddenly the two most important women in your life, I mean Lin has been ignoring you and you’ll have to figure out why later but she is your soulmate which does make her incredibly important to you, are out of your sight and dangerously fighting above as you uselessly stand there with your water bending abilities that won’t get you up there to help fight off equalists. Not being able to just stand by you summon water from below and create an ice bridge to the platform, if you can’t fight, you can try to put out the raging fire caused by the explosion.
“Y/n, wait!” Tenzin calls after but you're long gone. If you just stand there you’ll go insane and you have powers that can help, even if you don't get to kick some equalist ass.  Up above Lin finally lands on the glass dome and immediately sets out to take down as many people as she can at once, Korra watches in amazement for a moment as she wraps her wire at some guys foot and slams him into the roof before she gets knocked off the rope and lands onto the dome with a loud thud and the crackling of the glass starting to break below her.
It’s a collision of fire and electricity with metal wires flying towards the men and from below where you are using all your strength to put out the fire, it looks almost beautiful with the sparks of blue and flashes of red if not for the current circumstances. Tenzin has taken to help you with the fire by trying to use air to snuff it out. Suddenly glass from above sprinkles around them and you look up to see your little sister free falling once more.
“Tenzin can you do something with your air?!” You shout and he goes to try and send a force of air to help slow her down but she's going too fast, she’s flailing and if she doesn’t do something soon she’ll most likely die from the impact. As you run to the edge of the platform to try and save her yourself, Lin appears from above Korra and shoots a small wire to her so she can hold onto it like a rope.
Your shoulders sag in relief as you stumble away from the edge and use everything you’ve got to summon a massive wave to once and for all put out the fire. It works and the force of the water has it crashing into the stands taking with it some of the seats and any trash left behind in the frenzy. When you see Lin and Korra land  you race off towards the now soaking wet stands, using the water below as a set of frozen stairs to reach them. When you do, Lin has her hand on Korra’s shoulder and is saying something but you don’t make it out before you crush them both in a hug. Some sort of strangled sound of relief bubbles up through your throat as your hold on them tightens.
Korra wraps her arms around you, softly saying “thank the spirits you're okay” as Lin stays perfectly still. As her adrenaline slowly leaves her body and she realizes you aren’t in danger, she suddenly can’t be touched by you. She remains frozen until you pull away, you know it's not the time to bombard her so instead you offer Lin a thankful smile, too worried about how she’d react if you did anything else.
                                                           -----
A few days later you finally let Korra out of your sight, letting her run off to deal with her boy problems as you head towards the main police station. You tried to casually ask Tenzin what kind of tea Lin liked best, to which he’d furrowed his brows and said “why?” You simply shrugged and repeated your question. Apparently, it was jasmine, which was a favorite of yours as well so you stopped by your favorite tea shop and grabbed two to-go cups. As you enter the station you square your shoulders and give yourself a little pep talk “You can do this, you just need to march in and figure out why, maybe butter her up with the tea first of course, and then ask why, that’s if she lets you into the office…” you trail off once your eyes land on the door of Lin’s office, the words “Chief Beifong” are written in gold on the glass door which has a blind pulled down so you can’t see inside, which your slightly grateful for.
“Chief Beifong doesn’t want anyone to disturb her” one of the cops called out, but you ignore him and open the door, who cares, you deserve answers.
“I said I wanted to be alone, how brain dead are yo-” her words cut off as you walk in, balancing two cups in one hand so you can shut the door. You swallow, suddenly being in front of her has made most of your bravado slip away, along with your original plan, leaving you speechless. She doesn’t say anything, seeming to forget that she already spoke to you in the arena. You set the cups down and lift your shirt, which causes Lin to blush but you don’t stop until she can see her own words.
“I used to hate them… y’know,” you say quietly before dropping your shirt back down, Lin glares at her desk. “I used to be jealous of Korra and all the attention she got, so imagine growing up with her name etched onto your skin.”
She goes to open her mouth to speak, most likely to spew out some lie so you beat her to it. “I don’t know why, exactly, you kept it to yourself, I asked Tenzin the other day and he said you didn’t have a mark which is odd seeing as you are my soulmate." You pause, your voice softening, "you could have just told me straight away that you didn’t want me, didn’t want this instead of ignoring my existence and leaving me to wonder what I'd done to offend you.” Finally, she looks up from the desk and you make eye contact with her. You're trying so hard not to cry as you try to figure out what's going through her head, will she kick you out? Is your soulmate going to reject you?
“I thought…” Lin begins, she looks away from you, not being able to look you in the eyes anymore. “I thought I was doing you a favor, I’m old, and I’m not the most personable or charismatic person, I thought maybe you’d want someone your own age, maybe someone like your sisters' teammates.”
“So someone who is young and a guy? Did you think that maybe you should let me decide what I wanted instead of just assuming?”
“Look I gave up on the idea of having a soulmate years ago!” Lin shouts and you flinch away in surprise, “thirty years is a long time, do you know how I felt when those words suddenly appeared on me at thirty?”
“Oh, so you do have a mark!” You let out a disbelieving, angry laugh. “So you just went around telling everyone you didn’t have one, pretending the idea of me, of us, didn’t exist.” Tears cloud your vision and you let out a frustrated groan as you quickly gaze up at the ceiling in an attempt to keep them from falling. Lin’s gaze softens and she slowly stands from her desk.
“Y/n… I thought about it every day, but… We can’t be together, I’m far too old and I’ll just hold you back.” You scoff and aggressively wipe at the tears falling down your cheeks, your heart feels like it's beginning to crack.
“Your mark?” You croak out and cringe at how you sound. Lin hesitated before using her bending to take off the armor on her right arm. On her arm is a massive burn scar, you keep staring at it, not knowing what to say. Did someone else do that to her? As if she can read your thoughts, Lin says softly “I did it to myself a few days after it appeared.”
Oh. So this is what it's like to have your heart cleaved into two, what you felt just minutes before seems like nothing compared to the pain wrapping so tightly around you that it seems hard to breathe. She hated the idea of you so much she'd rather hurt herself and lie to everyone in her life. Without another word you turn your back on your soulmate, despite the sound of calling out to you, just like she did to you twenty years ago.

Chapter 66: The Queen’s Inheritance (V)
When Qi Leren was held in Ning Zhou's arms, he couldn't stop loving this person.
He thought that he could never give Ning Zhou up. If he couldn’t stand beside Ning Zhou, he would be terribly lonely and desperate.
"Power comes at a price," Ning Zhou whispered in his ear. "If I finally lose myself and become the devil I fear and hate most... If one day that happens, you must... kill me."
Qi Leren's chest seemed to be struck hard by a heavy hammer, making him breathless and pained. His bitter tears burst out at once. He put his forehead on Ning Zhou's shoulder and shook his head hard. At this moment, he knew clearly that he couldn't do it.
He was not the saint Maria. He couldn't kill his most important person in order to protect humanity. He was just an ordinary selfish person. He could only try his best to prevent Ning Zhou from falling, even if he has to sacrifice his own life to do it. But if one day the world and his lover were placed at opposite ends of the same scale, the scale would only sway and tilt towards his lover.
Qi Leren, who was driven to despair by this cruel fate, even thought, what did world peace have to do with him? Who would be grateful to a saint who had fallen into evil? If Ning Zhou really did this, would he have to kill Ning Zhou for the sake of "justice"?
"If there is such a day, I will accompany you." Qi Leren choked and said, "You must, you must not leave me."
Qi Leren knew what kind of person Ning Zhou was. He had long been aware of Ning Zhou's personality of self-sacrifice and dedication. After suffering from demonization, this personality had even tilted in the direction of self-destruction.
Ning Zhou could sacrifice himself for others, but he didn't want others to do this for him. He regarded giving as God's reward, and never considered getting a reward. He doesn't want to drag anyone down. If one day he really fell down, he would definitely let go of his hand before falling into hell, and let the person he loved stay in the world.
Because he firmly believed that this was better for Qi Leren, but for Qi Leren, he wanted to be with the person he loved more, and he didn't care whether he was human or a devil, and whether this was the world or hell.
Ning Zhou didn't answer. Just like when they had talked on the balcony that night, he didn't answer.
But this time, Qi Leren couldn't bear it anymore.
"I'm telling you seriously that I don't accept your self-righteous decision." Qi Leren broke free from Ning Zhou's hug and said to him with anger for the first time, "You think it’s good for me, but have you ever thought about how I feel?"
Ning Zhou was silent for a long time. After a long time, he sighed and said to Qi Leren, "Look at your feet."
Qi Leren turned his head and looked down at the altar. More than half of the temple of this cult ceremony had collapsed: the had dome collapsed, the columns had collapsed, and everything had collapsed slowly and inexorably. After the time for the Prophet's Heart ended, the white flowers all over the ground changed back to their original appearance—the broken arms and limbs and dripping blood were all over the place, which were bloodier and more horrible than the slaughtered Valentine tribe.
The blood foaming from the corpses’ mouths made the acid in his stomach churn. Under the tense environment just now, Qi Leren hadn't noticed this, but now when he carefully looked at this piece of hell on earth, he still couldn't bear to look closely and averted his eyes.
Ning Zhou was not surprised.
He hadn't been with Qi Leren for a long time. Most of the time, they had still been far away from each other. There were only the few days since he had really confessed his heart. But he knew what kind of person Qi Leren was. He is brave and strong. Most of the good qualities of human beings could be found in him, but this couldn’t hide that he was a naive young man who had grown up sheltered.
He must have had a warm family, parents who loved him, mentors and friends along the way, and he had lived happily for the first half of his life, so he learned how to love others generously.
Beloved children would become excellent people when they grew up. Their view of the world was gentle, and they had a childlike innocence towards cruelty. Their love for the world was selfish. They loved easily and hated easily. Once they were hit, it was too easy for them to turn good love into deep hate.
Qi Leren had seen the cruelty of the Nightmare World. He had not seen the real terror, and he had not defeated the evil in his heart, so he would not know what it was like to still love the world after suffering.
He felt that he couldn't kill Ning Zhou, and would rather go down with him, but he also hadn't seen a Ning Zhou who had lost himself in his original force, killed innocent people, and even destroyed the world. His determination was just naive self-motivation at this moment.
"You see this ceremony. Such things happen every day in the hell of the underworld, ones more cruel than this. Everything you can imagine, what you can't imagine... is happening. You will never like all this," Ning Zhou said.
He would only slowly collapse in disgust, or become evil himself.
Qi Leren choked. He forced himself to stare at the blood on the ground and a tentacle at his feet that had not been burned away. Every raised lesion on it was filled with disgusting mucus. As Ning Zhou said, he would never like it.
Just like he could strive to be strong in order to survive, and even learn to kill people, but he didn't like it.
The life he liked was the life he had once had, not the daily bloodshed in the Nightmare World. In the dead of night, he would also think of his parents. They only had one child. If he died here, he would never go back...
"Let’s go back. These things can be thought about slowly, and this half-field is about to collapse." Ning Zhou wiped off the blood on his hands and pulled Qi Leren down the damaged steps of the altar.
Qi Leren was silent, with his head down, and his boots stepped on the blood that splashed like a pool of water, making him hold his breath subconsciously. In this dim temple, everything was destroyed and ruined. When going out of the temple, Qi Leren suddenly remembered the mysterious sacrifice that had destroyed the ceremony before, and immediately went back to look for him.
"He left," Ning Zhou said, as if he knew what he was thinking.
"Left? Can you leave here?" Qi Leren asked in a low voice.
"I need to find out who this person is," Ning Zhou said. Taking Qi Leren forward, there were traces of a violent breakthrough at the edge of the half-field. The passerby had hit this half-field with his own half-field—this simple and crude method was very dangerous, because the half-field was very fragile before it was completely condensed. It was like two eggs colliding with each other. No one can be sure which one would be broken, or if the two would break together.
"That man just now... was very strange," Qi Leren said. "Did he intentionally mix into the cult sacrifice group to stop the ceremony and save them?"
Ning Zhou shook his head: "He was not here to save anyone."
That man had had no kindness or pity for the innocent people here. He was like a tiger who challenged the hunting tiger king in order to overthrow the position of the king of the jungle. It was not his original intention to save the goats who had escaped from danger. It was just a coincidence.
Qi Leren also felt the difference in that man, and he grinned: "He’s a strange person, but I saw his weapon... Is he the one who fought against Ashley before?"
"It's him," Ning Zhou said with certainty.
Qi Leren had a hunch that he would meet this person again.
The two men went out from the broken part of the half-field that was about to collapse, instantly returned to the sloped building, and then walked towards the Trials Court’s headquarters.

  &&&

"The worshippers of Utopia are getting more and more rampant," Celia said with a frown after hearing Qi Leren’s retelling of this cult sacrifice.
"Utopia is the Devil of Power’s field? What method did she use to sway the worshippers?" Qi Leren asked curiously.
He knew that with the Slaughter Secret Society of the Devil of Slaughter, by joining the organization and gaining recognition, members would have the opportunity to be given a powerful seed of slaughter, and could even be transformed into a demon. This was very attractive to ordinary people, so there were countless players and aborigines who joined in wave upon wave. However, Qi Leren still had little knowledge of what Utopia was.
"It’s said that as long as the monster guarding the gate of Utopia is summoned and given a good meal, it will generously open the door and let worshippers enter Utopia, where there is no death, no worry, no fear, and people can live a happy eternal life from now on," Celia said.
Qi Leren turned his head silently and complained to Ning Zhou, who was silent on the side: "They must be out of their minds?"
"...Hmm," Ning Zhou said.
"How can they believe that they can get what they want through this wicked ceremony? If nothing else, is the Devil of Power a kind person? Is she doing this to do good deeds?" Towards these idiotic fanatical worshippers, Qi Leren couldn't help but feel like he had a higher IQ.
Celia looked at the ripples in the cup of black coffee she held, and sighed lightly: "If you’re just an ordinary person, have no talent, and aren’t very brave, you don't know if you’ll still be alive tomorrow. You watch your relatives and friends die one by one, but there’s nothing you can do. Where do you want to pin your soul so it can breathe? People always have to believe something in order to forget the pain and suffering in front of them."
Qi Leren opened his mouth, but swallowed his words back.
He wanted to ask why they didn't work hard, but he felt that the question was like "why don't you eat more meat." Would hard work definitely have results? Even Qi Leren himself wasn’t sure. But if you didn't work hard...
Qi Leren tensed his face slightly. He looked at Ning Zhou, who had taken on too much burden, and thought: If you don't work hard, you will only sink forever into your destiny.
One day he would untie Ning Zhou and make him happy. Happy and free.
He believed that someday, this day would come.

Rue: Chapter 9 (Jasper Hale x OC Imagine)
Note: I'm literally in tears right now. I have 7000+ words over 13 pages on my word processor just for this chapter.
Night after night, summer and winter, the torment of storms, the arrow-like stillness of fine weather, held their court without interference.’
The swaying wheat and barley waved in the warm breeze; the burning sun burned like the beacon it was. The entire world was brown and golden. It was hot, it was suffocating. It was terrible.
“The land is barren.” Adeline muttered, her body rocking to and fro with the movement of the wagon, her eyes were trained into the far distance, squinting in the broiling sun.
“You’re being over dramatic.” Henriette’s tone was dry, her hands on the reins, spurring the horses to continue its trot.
“I hate it here already.” Adeline announced, crossing her arms in a huff. “Why couldn’t we have gone somewhere else? Somewhere with more greenery than this? There’s still plenty of places to hide in Louisiana-”
“Staying in the same place over and over will attract attention and you know it.” Henriette was losing her patience too, turning her head sharply to glare at her sister. “Your father will find us if we keep staying in the same place.” The lines on her face and around her eyes deepening, the ever growing frown settling over her wrinkled forehead.
“…We left Ralph in Orleans. All alone.” Adeline bowed her head in grief, hiding her face behind her hair and avoiding those piercing eyes of her sisters. “Six feet under and his body wasn’t even cold when we left.”
Her sister sighed again, though this time it betrayed a tenderness and affection that she only displayed towards her loved ones, freeing one hand to gently comb back Adeline’s soft tresses.
“Silly girl. How many times do I have to tell you? Ralph hasn’t gone anywhere, he’s always with you and me. Always.”
“He’s dead, that’s what he is.”
Henriette continued rubbing her shoulder’s soothingly, as if she were comforting a child. “But he’ll always be in our hearts, and that’s what matters.”
“It’s not the same.”
“Come Addie, let’s not fight.” The older woman smiled lightly, turning the younger girl’s head towards her for closer inspection. There were bags under her eyes and an unnatural pallor, a sullenness swirling behind. Even her usual bright eyes were dulled. “I hate it when you’re angry or sad.”
The younger girl shook her head and curled around the older ones side, much like a feline would.
“I still hate it here. Everything’s so dry and barren and ugly. I’m only putting up with it because of you.”
“What will you do when I’m gone?” Henriette sighed.
“Then I’ll just have to die and pursue you."
“Silly girl.” The elder smiled at the other indulgently, yet her eyes betrayed a melancholy she failed to hide. “You don’t mean that.”
He saw them long before they arrived.
Initially a speck in the distance, and then gradually enlarging until he could see their wagon gradually pulling into town along the dusty highway.
In truth, Jasper had noticed the old lady at the front first; her face hard and etched into a permanent frown, doing nothing to dispel the presence of her wrinkles and only succeeding in making more pronounced than ever. He would have turned away back to his field then had he not caught sight of her in the setting sun, the last of the sun rays reflecting a pale face.
She had a simple shawl wrapped around her head, protecting her from the dust. But it did nothing to hide the beauty she possessed, there was an ethereal feel to it; a otherworldliness. There was also a melancholy to the girl; with her head bowed, eyes downcast, looking so dejected. It captured his attention, struck a chord in his heart, and later he would stop to think about her, in his work, during mealtime, before he went to bed, in his walk.
His eyes followed their receding figure unconsciously as they made their way into town.
He did not know her name yet.
But she had unknowingly sent a ripple in the pool of his heart
Except he did not know of any of this yet.
It was another sleepless night.
Adeline clutched at the tattered copy of To The Lighthouse she had found fallen behind the shelf in the library and staggered downstairs.
Sleep had evaded her yet again. When was the last time she had had a good night’s rest? Or perhaps it was herself who was avoiding it altogether. Whichever it was, she barely slept a wink in the past week. she could almost feel the rush of agitation in her nerves now, the lethargy in her frame, the shortness of her temper.
She needed to get out.
This was a paradise for vampires she supposed. A secretive hideout for the Cullens, no one bothered them here. The town was too enamoured by the dazzling family, the town’s police chief was Bella’s dad and the only visitors they ever had were the wolves from the nearby indigenous tribe. And anyways there was ever only one person who came most of the time.
But it still unnerved her. The jitteriness she experienced in Colorado never fully left her. And she was still startled by the smallest things, the tiniest sounds.
It was the house. She finally concluded. It was Jasper.
She couldn’t rest with Jasper around. No she couldn’t.
Pocketing the few cigarettes she still had remaining into her worn satchel, Adeline grabbed the giant coffee flask she had prepared and stalked out of the house into the dreary morning of Forks in only a thin parka and boots.
As she stalked down the clearing at the back of the house, she felt a shiver down her spine and a feeling of being watched. Turning back she just made out a silhouette at the upper left window.
She didn’t need to squint to know who it was.
She flipped the bird at him before turning around to leave in a huff.
Jasper saw her multiple times in town over the next few days. The two had settled down into one of the cottages his parents had owned bordering their own farming fields; he had yet to formally acquaint with his new neighbours. But it would seem that the arrival of the girl had already sent the town into frenzy.
For one, her dress making skill was excellent. Her embroidery so fine and so meticulous that all the ladies of the town were soon sending in requests, until she had to put them on hold until she could finish the earlier ones first.
Two, she was soon the gossip of the entire town. She’d already had seven proposals in the course of a week, all of which she had rejected without even a side eye. Men were in awe of her beauty and wondered aloud at her ever downcast eyes and the enigma that she was. For the women in town though, she was the subject they loved to hate, for monopolising the attention of the other half of the town. Jealously was an ugly sentiment and hostility an ever isolating one. And the girl soon found herself alone and alienated without a single soul to call as friend.
Soon they had a third topic to discuss on.
She was seen trying to storm the local bookshop for new reading materials, but on seeing her, the store owner had kindly redirected her back to her ladies’ weekly digest.
“You don’t make any sense! Why am I not allowed to read?! It’s only a novel!"
“Child, novels are hardly a suitable reading material for a lady. It promotes unrealistic fancies in young minds like yours.”
“That’s a condescending observation sir.”
“Who do you say you live with again?”
“My grandmama.”
“Well young lady, I suggest you have a word with you grandmother then.”
“Wait!”
The man slammed his door in her face.
And no matter how hard she pounced on the wooden door, the shopkeeper refused to open the door again to the girl.
“Darling, sweetheart.” A pair of well-meaning elderly ladies stopped in their tracks to regard the girl. “Don’t be mad at the man, he’s only trying to do you good. What kind of gentleman of good status would want a woman with her head stuck in a book? It’ll only spur you on into fantasies after fantasies; no man would want a wife who would neglect the family. What would you possibly do then?”
Her lips pursed now and Jasper could see how upset she was with the way her shoulders were hunched and her teeth biting into her lips so hard it drew blood but somehow her eyes shone with a fierce defiance he had never seen.
“A man who loves me would not ask me to give up any of that.”
She let slipped this one sentence before turning to leave with her head held high.
“What a peculiar young girl.” The lady turned to her equally surprised friend and wondered aloud.
The crowd dispersed to return to their day and errands.
Only Jasper was rooted where he was, his mind replaying the conversation the girl and the lady had, the silent dignity, the crackling flame inside her.
He looked to the bookshop again.
Adeline always thought that their relationship now was like a predator to its prey; Jasper always on the outlook, ready to pounce anytime she showed the slightest weakness. But when she did look closely, it wasn’t difficult to find him shuffling awkwardly in the corner when they were in the same room, looking at her with unveiled longing and then the predator would turn into a wounded puppy.
Adeline wanted to laugh at the absurdity of the entire situation. That he should feel hurt and yet still longed for her, instead of choosing to hate her for all she had done. It was beyond her comprehension. If their fortunes had reversed, she couldn’t say for certain if she would feel the same.
She wondered if he ever thought of the past, their past together. Because she was convinced that he viewed it through a rose tinted lens
Adeline lighted a cigarette and puffed thoughtfully. What she had read at the break of dawn still fresh on her mind.
“There it was before her - life. Life: she thought but she did not finish her thought. She took a look at life, for she had a clear sense of it there, something real, something private, which she shared neither with her children nor with her husband. A sort of transaction went on between them, in which she was on one side, and life was on another, and she was always trying to get the better of it, as it was of her; and sometimes they parleyed (when she sat alone); there were, she remembered, great reconciliation scenes; but for the most part, oddly enough, she must admit that she felt this thing that she called life terrible, hostile, and quick to pounce on you if you gave it a chance.”
She must admit, Woolf’s writings always did have a knack of making one feel and think differently; to approach life, time and memory in a new light; to reflect. The lighthouse, was the never changing vantage point in the passage of time, the ever eluding desire that one chased after but never could quite grasp; ten years was a very long time in a life span, people change, for better or for worse; people die, and all was left was a memory frozen in time. And even that fades, lost in time and space. Nothing was everlasting, no mark or testimony survives the void.
Not even love.
The brutality of life and reality had made sure that it did not.
She briefly considered her own life.
The innocent child Henriette had protected at all cost when she was alive, who was immediately killed by her father after Hettie’s death, gutted and left to her own demise in some dirty gutter. And in her place, all that was left was this new emotionally dead and drained Adeline. Haunted by her own past, her deeds and her misfortunes, completely broken and never quite pieced back together right.
Adeline had taken the gamble with life and lost miserably.
The fog was getting thicker now, the wind lost somewhere in the thicket. The spring air was stagnant, and the soft tendrils of smoke curled around her hair, her frame. For a moment, she stopped in her tracks, just to take in this present moment that would soon morph into another forgotten memory of hers.
He found her at the far end of his parents’ field, looking out into distance, sniffing.
“Hey are you alright?”
“I’m fine.” She sniffed again no doubt surprised that someone had crept on her, scrubbing at her face furiously. “Never better.” Before turning around to scrutinise him.
“Who are you?”
“I don’t think we’ve formally met ma’am, I’m Jasper Whitlock.”
“You’re Mr and Mrs Whitlock’s second son.” The girl gasped, before ducking her head formally and shaking his hand. “I’m Adeline, Adeline Ruelle. Your mother’s told me about you.” She looked around again before smiling awkwardly and gesturing to the fields. “I’m trespassing. This is your land. I’ll go-”
“No, no. It’s uh… it’s alright. I don’t mind, Miss Ruelle.”
“But still. I shouldn’t be disturbing the lot of you.”
“Wait. Uh I… I couldn’t help but saw what happened in the town square.”
“Oh.” She frowned before looking down, clearly getting the wrong idea. He wasn’t there to reprimand her too. “It’s alright, I won’t-”
“No wait, I don’t mean it that way. Here.” He quickly thrusted the bundle he had been hiding behind his back this whole time.
Confused, Adeline clutched at the bundle, feeling the hard texture of the package before looking up to stare at him agape. Her hand quickly dove in to tear at the wrapping paper to reveal a hardback book.
“Frankenstein?” She held the book up questioningly. “Why are you giving me this?”
“You wanted this right? Or was it not this? I could take it back and change it if you want-”
“No, no. This was what I was looking for. But why are you giving me this?”
“Because you wanted it.” He stated as a matter of fact. When his answer didn’t dispel the confused look on Adeline’s face, Jasper struggled to explain himself more. “I don’t think they were right in refusing to let you read just because they think it’s not suitable for a lady. Anyone should be allowed to pursue their own knowledge…”
“This isn’t really the most educating thing you know.” For the first time, there was a playful smirk on her lips. “It’s a novel on a man making a monster.”
“You know what I mean.”
Evidently she was grateful. “I- how can I ever thank you for this? How much does this cost? I’ll pay you back the money… I’ll pay you double for all your trouble-”
“No, no it’s fine. Please don’t pay me. I wanted to help. You looked so sad and I just wanted to cheer you up is all.”
“Wait, where are you going, Mr Whitlock sir?! Wait.”
In his mind he had embarrassed himself. It was a stupid move buying her the book. Now she would think him worse than all her other suitors. He had intruded into her privacy and had condescended her by deciding that she would want the book. He had never lost his cool once before, not in front of the girls who had flirted with him, and this new girl had come along and thrown him off his balance.
He didn’t realise till then that his heart was beating erratically and his hand clenched over it unconsciously.
What a stupid stupid man that he was.
“Adeline.”
She was momentarily shocked from her thoughts. Looking up, she found that she had come across the Cullens. There was Alice with the little family.
Alice looked concerned, no doubt surprised by her haggard look and her sleep deprived countenance. Even Bella and Edward looked alerted too. Despite being eccentric, Alice was, Adeline concluded, actually quite a nice person, overly friendly maybe.
“You look tired, are you alright?”
“I’m alright.” She shrugged nonchalantly. Even though the exhaustion was catching up on her fast.
Alice hesitated before smiling. “We’re going to hunt. Do you want to join us?”
Ah, so they were going to hunt. She remembered her surprise when for the first time she had heard that they were vegetarians and that they only fed on animals. Henriette had half forced half bullied her to adopt this kind of diet since she was born, yet she had never seen another doing the same before.
But she didn’t like to hunt in the presence of another, it made her self conscious. And anyways, she was trying her best to steer away from the company of the family.
“It’s alright.” She remained aloof. “I’ll hunt on my way.”
“Will we expect you by dinnertime?” Bella spoke up at the back, Adeline could literally see the trying in her effort to be nice. She quickly looked to Edward who’s face remained neutral.
“Hmph. I’ll be back.” She nodded her head at the latter.
Their paths diverging, the rest of the clan soon took their leave of her. And Adeline looked on at their receding back from her spot.
They would all soon be a distant memory of hers, there was no need to be formally acquainted with any of them.
‘With her foot on the threshold she waited a moment longer in a scene which was vanishing even as she looked, and then, as she moved and took Minta's arm and left the room, it changed, it shaped itself differently; it had become, she knew, giving one last look at it over her shoulder, already the past.’
This time she was waiting for him.
The moment she caught sight of him strolling towards the perimeter of his fields after supper, Adeline immediately jogged towards him, a large basket in tow.
“I’ve been looking all over for you, Mr Whitlock.” She chirped, an unusually bright smile graced over her porcelain features, a stark contrast to the melancholy he saw on her first day in town.
He decided that he loved seeing her smile more than anything right then.
“Jasper is fine ma’am.” He ducked his head bashfully. “Mr Whitlock’s my dad if you will, everyone around here just calls me Jasper, Miss Ruelle.”
“Fine. But then you must call me Adeline. It’s only fair.”
“Miss Adeline.” He bowed half out of jest.
“Adeline.” She corrected him, though there was a twinkle in her eyes. “So where’re you headed to?”
“I’m just heading to the creek down below to rest for a bit, it’s been a long day.”
Adeline nodded in understanding and he was somewhat amused to find the girl trotting behind him. Chuckling, Jasper swooped in to take a grasp at the handle of the basket and carried it. When they finally settled at a shady spot near the creek, Adeline leaned forward to open the latch of the basket.
“I wanted to thank you,” she began, pulling out a batch of baked cookies. “For the book.”
“Its nothing-”
“No! It wasn’t just anything! I…” He watched as she frowned and look away, debilitating with herself, trying to find the right words to express herself.
“No one’s ever done this for me… ever.” She finally murmured, her hands playing at her aprons absentmindedly. “So… yeah.” She pulled at her ear sheepishly. “Sorry, I’m sure you’re not interested in my ramblings. I should go… it’s your rest time.”
“It’s alright. I don’t mind.”
They sat in mutual silence, though there was less initial awkwardness.
“Do you-”
“So I-”
They started at the same time. Sheepish, Jasper gestured for Adeline to continue speaking. She smiled another of her easy smile.
“What I wanted to say was that you really don’t know how much it means for me… for you to get that book for me. My grandfather taught me how to read and write. And between the both of us, this was our most favourite book of all time. But his copy was destroyed in the floods some years ago so when he died… I wanted something to remember him by. That’s why I desperately wanted it at the bookshop.” She grew sentimental then. “Of course it’s not the same copy we used to have, but it’s the sentiment of it that’s the most important.”
“Then I’m glad I got it for you.” And he meant it from the bottom of his heart.
“Here.” She handed him a cookie, “you still haven’t tried it yet.”
Tentatively, he took a bite out of it. “It’s delicious!"
Adeline grinned, evidently proud. “Of course. And they said no decent southern gentleman would want me. You’ve just proven them wrong!”
Jasper laughed. “Well you’ve certainly stolen my stomach away with that amazing bakery.”
Adeline reclined onto her elbows in her spot and squinted in the dazzling sun. “You know it’s not half as bad here as I initially thought.”
“Must be because of my company.” He spoke jokingly.
“Hmm. Maybe." Jasper found himself observing Adeline’s every move. Now she was closing her eyes, basking in the glory of the setting sun, humming to herself. The warm ray of light accentuating her long neck and her collarbones and-
She turned suddenly, her excited eyes on him.
“Have you ever read Frankenstein?”
She knew she was getting closer and closer towards the sea, despite the fog being thick and hanging over the threshold. She just knew.
There was the faint crashing of waves now, getting louder by the minute. And the brambles of the forest floor was spreading out.
Now all she needed to do was-
And she stepped out into the sunlight. Despite the sun, it was not the Texan sun she remembered from her memories, it barely gave her warmth. But it did dispel some of the mist that clung around her like tendrils. Here was a cliff of some sort, with the sea roaring right below her feet, the moss and the wildflowers carpeting the entire forest ground until it ended abruptly at the ledge, to a steep drop of some fifty or even sixty feet.
It was indeed beautiful.
Adeline watched mesmerised, how the waves licked the cliff side, thundering, throwing up white foam and algae and whatnots.
Sighing, she leaned back against a tree trunk. The sky was grey and endless in the horizon. It was dreary, and she felt that it suited her more than the Texan sun and blue sky ever did.
She readjusted her sitting position against the tree and took out her book.
James and Cam and Mr Ramsey were heading to the lighthouse now and Lily Briscoe was finishing off her painting ten years later.
‘“It will rain,” he remembered his father saying. “You won’t be able to go to the Lighthouse.”
The Lighthouse was then a silvery, misty-looking tower with a yellow eye, that opened suddenly, and softly in the evening. Now—
James looked at the Lighthouse. He could see the white-washed rocks; the tower, stark and straight; he could see that it was barred with black and white; he could see windows in it; he could even see washing spread on the rocks to dry. So that was the Lighthouse, was it?
No, the other was also the Lighthouse. For nothing was simply one thing. The other Lighthouse was true too. It was sometimes hardly to be seen across the bay. In the evening one looked up and saw the eye opening and shutting and the light seemed to reach them in that airy sunny garden where they sat.’
She closed the book with a sigh.
To be fair, she knew that Jasper thought about their past, just as she did. Except, they each remembered things and events differently. Or maybe it was just that for her, with the knowledge of hindsight, everything was brought into a new light and became tainted.
Could she look back with pure joy now? At her days with him which was now, in hindsight, filled with regret and more importantly, guilt.
There was some truth in it she supposed.
Perhaps there were more facets in their memory than she would give credit for. There was the truth, and then there were all the different angles you could appraise it from. Both were looking at the lighthouse, but he no doubt looked on with fondness and through a rose tinted lens, and she with hindsight could only look on with a sense of dread.
She only wished that he would not be so enamoured by his sentiments that he was blindsided by the truth.
With that thought, her mood soured again and she threw the book into the ground. Subconsciously, her hand went to the locket hidden beneath her shirt where she fingered the engravings to calm herself.
Adeline closed her eyes and listened to the sea.
After that fateful afternoon, Adeline was showing up at the fields every few days. And the creek immediately became their mutual meeting point. And on days when she was too busy with her work to venture out, Jasper would swing by, just to see her, have a chat. They lived close enough, and he was always giving excuses after excuses about why he was there. Excuses he thought she saw through with that complicit smile and the twinkle always present in her eyes. Her grandmother was less impressed however, but she never treated him ill, always being ever cordial, receiving him, making tea, working in the corner, muttering to herself in French.
The days blurred into one, and towards the end of that summer, his parents invited the Adeline and her grandmother over for dinner one fine evening. His mother took an immediate liking towards the girl, and his father called her the daughter he always wanted.
It made Jasper feel giddy, that his family loved her so much. He was almost proud.
It would be the best summer he ever had.
They had read Milton, the Odysseus, the Aeneid, Austen, Dickens, and many more.
He was always surprised to see Adeline brimming with so much knowledge at such a young age. He had wondered at the background of her grandfather, but she always deflected the questions with a wistful smile then he learnt not to ask them anymore.
It was perhaps cliche to say, but she really was not like other girls. Adeline was open, she was kind and sincere and more importantly she was the sun herself, a burning beacon, radiating with warmth. One look at her and he found the day’s worth of handwork and fatigue to be nothing.
Jasper knew the implication of his thundering heart. Romance was not something new to him, he’d heard it from fieldworkers, men who were only a few years older than him.
But he had his doubts too.
He saw how the men tried to talk to her, and though she never mentioned it once to him, he heard enough to know about all the confessions and declarations and proposals she received on a regular basis. Her refusals did nothing to quell his disheartened heart. Her suitors ranged from various backgrounds including pretty boys with wealthy backgrounds and ancestors who were founding members of this town even.
What was he? Nothing but a simple farmer boy. How was he to compete with then?
Every time he heard of another refusal, his hope would get a little higher, that perhaps her smiles and her openness were only directed at him. Yet one look at himself and his meagre possessions, and he would lose what little confidence he had.
Even so, even so she never missed a day with him. Never forgot an engagement, never failed to show up.
That she would welcome him warmly each time, with her radiant smile and her gentle words, even if she would ramble on and on about her long and tiring day and her tedious work.
He was failing miserably to quell his beating heart. Some days It was pure agony, other days he would find himself hope against all hope that perhaps, just perhaps that she would reciprocate even a fraction of his feelings.
But his doubts held him back each time, when he was on the brink of a confession. He would be reminded of the string of failed proposals that came before his and he would become afraid and stopped himself short.
Was it better to protect this friendship, this comradeship that they had?
But with each passing summer day, as he got ready for harvest, his heart was becoming more and more heavy.
It was too much.
He didn’t think he could go on like this.
The ravens cawed and she awoke with a start. Standing up immediately, she was dazed to find that she was not in her simple attire of boots and parka anymore. Gone was the sea and the grey horizon; the pines surrounding her were tall and ominous, a light mist was beginning to form around her, obscuring her sight further on. She was in her Sunday best again, the cream coloured dress with those understated embroideries she had seen herself. There was the chain of daisies at the hem of her sleeves and around her collar. She looked around, trying to comprehend her surrounding.
So she was in a dream then.
A nightmare perhaps.
Might as well walk to the very end of it so that she could wake. Though she loathed to think how it would end, hopefully not with her screaming bloody murder again.
Trudging onwards, the claustrophobia was getting more and more intense, the fog thickening and the trees crowding more and more together until there was no distinguishable path that she could follow. She felt suffocated.
Just then, there was a chill around her heart and it began to thump fiercely. Turning her head cautiously towards her back, she was instantly struck by an intense fear.
Run, her instinct was screaming in her ears.
She ran like the frightened bunny that she was. She could hear the laughters of her sisters, and worse of all. The shoutings of her father.
There seemed to be no end. The brambles tore at her dress, tearing the embroideries, the mud splattering all over her apron, the loose branches leaving small open cuts over her hands and face. The laughters behind her never ceased. She was bone chilled and yet she daren’t stop in her tracks. For fear of being caught, for fear of a punishment worse than death.
And just when all hope was lost, there in the distance was an opening!
And out she ran into a field of wheat and barley. Shocked, she looked back cautiously at the edge of the forest she had just dashed through.
The eeriness had gone and it was only just a stretch of low woodland and shrubberies. Her nightmarish forest was gone.
Cocking her head to the side in confusion, Adeline nevertheless continued to trudge on and at the end of the wheat field, a warm inviting cottage stood in its midst.
The smoke gently curled around the chimney, the vines over the walls, the blue cornflowers at the windows.
It was painfully the same as she had remembered.
She quietly opened the latch to the door and stepped inside the threshold.
“You’re back.” As her eyes adjusted to the dimly lit room, she saw a man in a simple cotton white shirt and dark pants gently settling the white bundle in his arms into a crib. “How was your walk? Refreshing?”
“Yes…” Adeline stuttered. “Jasper?"
“Yes darling?” The man turned with a tender smile towards her, arms opening wide to welcome her. This time she did not hesitate and rushed towards his strong inviting embrace. Breathing in the strong familiar scent, feeling the warmth he radiated. All the while avoiding glancing at the crib she had seen.
“I’m tired.” She murmured. “Take me to bed?” She pleaded.
Jasper only chuckled.
As they finally settled in bed, his calloused hands, overused at the farm, began its motion of combing through her hair slowly, soothingly just like he did all the time when the two were in bed. Adeline closed her eyes and sighed. She didn’t want to wake up from this and back to the icy cold acquaintance that they now shared.
“I had the strangest dream.” She murmured to him, burrowing deeper into his embrace, her ear rested on his chest, and she could hear the strong beating of his beating heart. “I dreamt that I left you. And that it destroyed you so badly that you became something I couldn’t even recognise anymore. And then I hated you so much and you resented me so much for turning you into what you became.”
“Left me…” Jasper repeated to himself, his hand froze momentarily in its motion.
Adeline looked up in desperation. If this was a dream, at least she would keep him happy. This much she could do at the very least.
“It was only just a dream though.” She tried to smile, raising a hand to trace his strong jawline. “I could never leave you.”
He resumed his soothing motion, combing through her hair, massaging her scalp. She hummed and turned to listen to his beating heart again.
“No, because what would happen to us if you actually left?”
Ah… the bundle in the crib.
She imagined a young boy, with golden curls around his temple and warm inviting hazel eyes. Who would call her maman, who she would teach French to, and raise him and teach him well, just as she had done to her handful of brothers and sisters. It would’ve been domestic bliss. It would’ve been what she wanted if she had been human.
She was drifting in and out of consciousness again as she lingered in her impossible dreams.
The soothing motion over her scalp never ceased. In fact it became more and more concrete.
“Adeline…. Adeline…”
There was someone calling to her softly, far away, at the edge of her consciousness. And it was getting nearer and nearer.
Somehow she felt safe, warm and calm. A sense of serenity washed over her.
She was protected.
She felt a light peck over her lips.
A chaste little kiss.
She chastised without opening her eyes, though her lips were slowly pulling into a small smile.
“What are you playing at-” she mumbled in her sleep.
And then she descended into sweet oblivion.
They met in the fields as usual the sun casting its shadow towards the east, amongst the waving barley and the golden wheat. Adeline was chatting animatedly about the latest novel she had been reading.
He cleared his throat when she stopped to take a breath in between.
“I have something to tell you.”
Her brows shot up no doubt finally realising that she had been hogging the conversation table for the last half an hour or so, but she quickly composed herself and gave him a reassuring smile. “What is it? I’m all ears.”
“I’m joining the army.”
“What?”
“I’m joining the Texas cavalry.”
“Why?” She looked bewildered, and there was a frantic look in her eye. “Don’t you have enough to do in the farm? The harvests and the cattle’s and… everything! Have you talked this through with your parents?!”
“I have. They are in full support of it.”
“But why?” She pouted her lips cutely, but her voices sounded betrayed. “I enjoy our time with you here everyday, don’t you? If you join the army, you’ll be working and training everyday. I-” she stopped and looked away, embarrassed, scuffing the sole of her shoe over the ground petulantly.
He chuckled. How to make her understand? That he was doing this exactly because of her.
“Besides, you’re a landowner yourself. I know the land isn’t much, but it should be enough for you right?”
“Adeline.”
“So why would you suddenly decide you want to become a soldier?”
“Adeline.”
“I mean sure I know you’ll excel in it anyways. You’re going to charm you way up. Then you’ll forget little ol me.”
“Adeline.” Jasper finally had to smirk. "You never let people finish what they have to say.”
Adeline huffed in annoyance and crossed her arm. “Fine. By all means!”
What she didn’t expect next was for him to clasp her hand in his.
“You might think that a farmer is well respected enough, but I’m a second son. When my parents die, my brother will inherit the farm. I can help with the farm, but it will never be mine. I’ll never have an income as prosperous as my brother will if I continue to work for him. When I do marry and then someday have children of mine, would I want them to endure the same fate as I have?”
“But if you love her then surely-”
“Would I be able to have better marriage prospect as my brother does? The answer is no. I would never be able to do better than him, I would be at a disadvantage, less likely to get the girl of my dreams. No decent gentleman would marry their own precious daughter to a second son. That is, unless if I make a name for myself in some other way.”
“By joining the army?”
“It was either that or become a priest.”
“There are other ways surely! You can study to be a lawyer or… or a businessman or anything other than joining the army!”
“Don’t you find some of the younger soldiers charming and dashing? I overheard you chatting with-”
“I care about you too much to want to see you get hurt!”
There was a solemnity in her clear blue eyes that betrayed nothing but sincerity and concern. It left him feeling giddy, that gave him a confidence he had been lacking for sometime to carry out what he was about to do that he had psyched himself up to do for weeks now. He couldn’t help but grin.
But it irked her to new heights.
“Stop it, don’t laugh! It’s not a laughing matter!” Adeline pouted again, slapping him in the arm repeatedly, and this time there were angry tears threatening to fall from her beautiful orbs. “I worry about you! Even if you seem no have no care about your own safety!”
“Fine! Go! Go join the bloody army if you love it so much for some bloody girl you think you’ve fallen in love with! See if I care when you get killed off by some stupid I don’t know what!”
She turned around and by the slight tremor in her shoulder and the sniffing he realised with a newfound panic that she was crying. This wasn’t what he had intended to do.
“Adeline.” He soothed, coaxing the girl to turn around to face him. “Are you crying?”
“No I’m not.”
“Hush, then turn around see that I can see you properly.”
When she did turn, he could still see the devastation over her face. The tear trails over the apples of her cheek, those eyes brimmed with unshed tears. But she stared back with great defiance, her chin held haughtily up. He has to suppress a tender sigh, his heart was so heavy with love for this girl, the little treacherous thing thumping against his chest so loudly he was sure she would’ve heard it.
“Adeline, you must know how important this is for me."
She looked away then and feigned boredom. “Why are you telling me this Mr Whitlock? You’re wasting your time on me. Shouldn’t you be looking for your bloody lover to her about this.”
“I really should shouldn’t I? But I need your help and advice.” He studied her closely as she bit her lips so hard it almost drew blood, as she raised a hand to finger her earring in an effort to calm her nerves mo doubt. He slowly reached out a hand to hold her chin and turn her pretty face back to his before delivering the final blow.
“But suppose I’m looking at her already right now as I speak?”
“Looking at her…?”
“Won’t you tell me how do I stop her tears and make her understand that I’m joining the army so that I can have a future with her? So that I can stand on my own and go to her grandmother to ask for permission to court her and marry her?”
He saw the moment the realisation hit her, Adeline’s mouth dropped as she stared mutely at him.
“You… I… I don’t think I understand what you-”
“I’m telling you that I love you Adeline. And I want to marry you.”
He stopped abruptly then to take a deep breath, his heart beating ferociously now, the rush in his ears was almost deafening, he was too fearful of what she would say.
But when her looked into her eyes, there was a newfound vulnerability, one he had never seen before. She wet her trembling lips.
“This isn’t a joke you’re pulling on me is this?”
“I would never joke about this.” He said with resolute.
Bashful, she looked down and sucked at her lips. And if he had looked closely, he would have seen how her cheeks were tinted red, not by the summer heat or the burning sin.
“No one has ever said that to me.” Her eyes were brimming with tears again though her lips were slowly, but surely drawing up into a smile. “I think… I love you too Jasper Whitlock.”
And that was the straw for him.
He stepped forward to close the gap between them, long arms stretching out to hold her tightly. Her arms slowly wound themselves around his neck, their face inches apart, looking straight into each other’s eyes.
“Don’t you think we’re a little too close for propriety’s sake, Mr Whitlock?” The corner of her lips tugging up playfully.
“Hush”. He thought his heart was going to burst. “I’m going to kiss you now.”
And under the setting Texan sun, amongst a golden burning world, they shared their first ever kiss, two hearts beating as one.
The thick clouds above were for once finally dispersing and the radiant sunbeams filtered in between, producing a luminous effect as it struck his skin.
The motion in his hand never ceasing, gently combing through Adeline’s hair as she herself laid on his chest, breathing in and out calmly. Without the hostility and the jitteriness, Jasper was almost fooled into believing that this Adeline was the same Adeline from his past.
But she was not.
Jasper sighed again, his heart so full of emotions it was painful.
He had wandered out after she left the house and subconsciously, or perhaps guided by a vengeful angel, he had stumbled across her, in the midst of a nightmare, curling into herself, whimpering. He acted on his natural instincts to soothe away the frown, and it mystified him that the moment he laid his hand on her head did the whimpering stopped. He couldn’t resist stealing a light kiss from those plump lips.
Looking down at Adeline’s serene sleeping face, Jasper wished he didn’t have to hide himself like this, that he could’ve held her when she was awake, her radiant smile guided towards him and himself only. Not like this, not when she wouldn’t even know that it was him who had comforted her and held her in her sleep, had warded away her nightmares, even if just for a few moments only.
Oh but he couldn’t let her know.
Every small movement now would send him into caution, to extricate himself from her before she woke, lest she would run away, lest he would startle her, deepen this gulf between them.
He surveyed their immediate surrounding, there was Adeline’s cassette player, the tiny thing’s battery had long since stopped running. He made a remark to ask her about the mixtape she had been listening to. The emptied coffee flask, the burnt cigarette butts. And there lying open with its cover up, its spine breaking right in the middle, was Rosalie’s old battered copy of To the Lighthouse. He remembered watching her going all out just to hide it behind the shelf.
It’s too painful. She had finally confessed one rainy day. But I can’t bear to throw it away. It’s like a mirror you hold up to juxtapose it with your own life.
He never read it, not in depth anyways.
He reached out to grab it and randomly flipped through it, scanning the words as he did so.
‘To want and not to have, sent all up her body a hardness, a hollowness, a strain. And then to want and not to have- to want and want- how that wrung the heart, and wrung it again and again!’
“What is the meaning of life? That was all- a simple question; one that tended to close in on one with years, the great revelation had never come. The great revelation perhaps never did come. Instead, there were little daily miracles, illuminations, matches struck unexpectedly in the dark; here was one.”

Tis the Season of Love ♪,
Get That Person’s Heart! (let’s get it)
The flower blooming Spring is the season of (new) meetings. Look around for an instant and before you know it, the distance between “that person” and “that person” has gotten smaller. Will love be born from there? Picking up the relationship that people are curious about.
Even though they’re at the height of adolescence, the three Yashahimes slay demons all the time. Within that, recently there’s a gentleman that has quickly approached Towa. His name is Riku. He seems to be known among demons and is a suspicious unidentifiable person, but his manners are exceptional in any case! Whether it’s because Towa let’s her guard down at his friendly attitude, they seem to enjoy their conversations whenever they meet. It seems Riku has a motive but putting that aside, it appears that he’s taken a liking to Towa herself. While still not knowing whether he’s a friend or enemy, at some point, a relationship that’s not quite love (?) has sprouted between them. This time, we had Matsumoto Sara, the voice actress for Towa, talk about Riku and, going with the theme of Spring, had her choose flower images for the Yashahimes and Riku based on “Flower Language”.
The handsome young man with an ulterior motive, Riku
Self-proclaimed “pirate come ashore”. A young man of many mysteries who covets the rainbow pearls the three Yashahimes possess. He also knows a lot about the circumstances surrounding the birth of Towa and the others.
The honest girl who is still inexperienced in love, Towa
Sesshōmaru’s daughter and Setsuna’s elder twin sister. She treasures Setsuna, who was raised separately from her, more than anyone else. On the night of the new moon, she loses her demonic powers and her hair turns black.
Setsuna
Towa’s younger twin sister. Due to having her sleep stolen by the Dream Butterfly, she is unable to sleep. While she does not have any memories of her early childhood, she has gradually become able to let her guard down around Towa.
Spring Breeze Interview, The Voice Actress for Higurashi Towa: Matsumoto Sara
Moroha
Inuyasha and Kagome’s daughter. Separated from her parents soon after being born, she was raised by the wolf demon tribe. When she puts rouge on her lips, she becomes “Beniyasha, the Destroyer of Lands” and goes on a rampage.
— With the development thus far, which episode left a big impression on you?
What left the biggest impression on me was episode 14 which was the episode that showed the truth behind the forest fire that separated Towa and Setsuna. I always to keep an objective point of view while acting but at that time, I was truly angry from the bottom of my heart. Whether for better or for worse, Towa’s emotions came into me.
Also, the depiction of Towa and Setsuna when they were born in episode 15 left an impression on me as well. Since it’s Sesshōmaru, I thought he would be rough with the babies but surprisingly, he firmly and carefully held them, so I was relieved (laughs).
— Being Towa’s father, what do you think of Sesshōmaru’s actions?
Without really saying too much, even though there are not enough words, I end up just suddenly saying what I’m really curious about. However, I think Sesshōmaru himself acts on his intentions while not caring about what others around him think. I also didn’t know what the future development was, so as the role of the daughter I thought “Please give more hints”.
— How did you feel seeing the figure of Towa fighting up to this point?
When Towa’s life completely changed by jumping from the modern era to the feudal era, I worried if Towa would be able to cope but I was surprised at how adaptable she was. There’s the fact that she’s still in puberty so her sensitivity is like a sponge, or rather her ability to absorb things is amazing, I think. Also, having Setsuna nearby is big. There may be times where she’s uneasy but her strong sense of duty and justice to “protect Setsuna” is what I feel drives her. She’s the type to immediately take action if there’s something she has to do, so I think her current environment is a good fit.
— Alright then, what are some highlights going forward?
There’s an episode where you will learn Setsuna’s childhood and how she lived after she was separated from Towa. In episode 13, it talked about how Monk Miroku sealed Setsuna’s demonic powers, so this flashback episode of the past will connect to that. After episode 20, the fragments scattered throughout the story thus far will gradually come together as one, so there’s a lot of information packed in that you can’t miss. I think viewers have been in suspense following the mystery (of the story) so please look forward to the final stage of the development.
Will the Scheming Man’s Approach Work on the Dense Princess!?
Towa & Riku Affinity Investigation
I’m weak against boys like Riku, so if someone continuously came to me saying “I’m interested in you”, it would make my heart beat fast (laughs). Riku moves understanding that mentality and I think he’s good at setting up the mood when approaching Towa. I think right now based on where he stands, he makes spur of the moment decisions on how to act. He’s mysterious but he smiles periodically and even though he’s vague, he has a maternal appeal… He’s a very charming and sly character (Matsumoto)
By the way! If Riku were in the modern era, what sort of occupation would he be suitable for?
He’s a sweet talker, so the first thing that comes to mind is a swindler (laughs). There was a scene where he showed a magic technique so I think work in the entertainment field would also fit Riku. He also seems suitable to be an actor. He’s got natural talent and can turn into any person. Then conversely, I think strict jobs would also suit him. If he were a schoolteacher, I have a feeling he would be popular with the students. (Matsumoto)
The Part of Riku that Makes One Swoon: He completely reeks of danger.
Tumblr media
Riku’s mysteriousness is appealing. He also met Kagome before she gave birth to Moroha, but he looked the same as he does now.
The Part of Towa that Makes One Swoon: She tries her hardest and is pure cuteness!
Losing her demonic powers on the “Night of the New Moon”, Towa becomes worried about Setsuna. Different from usual, she shows the weak side of a regular girl.
Try! Heart Pounding Flower & Date Plan
What flower comes to mind for Towa, Setsuna, Moroha, and Riku?
Setsuna is the Evening Primrose
Setsuna is an evening primrose which in flower language means “Silent Affection”. The evening primrose goes unnoticed and quietly blooms at night. Having her sleep stolen by the Dream Butterfly, I think it overlaps with the figure of Setsuna being the only one awake after everyone else has fallen asleep for the night. (Matsumoto)
Towa is the Lily
Towa is a lily which in flower language means “Pure”. While watching reality change before her eyes, I think the word “pure” fits Towa perfectly as she acts with a pure sense of justice and duty. That sense of not being tainted by anything is also like a lily. (Matsumoto)
Moroha is the Statice
Moroha is a statice which in flower language means “Endless Memories”. Born as Inuyasha and Kagome’s child, I think Moroha’s existence is blessed. The things Moroha inherited from her parents are within her as “endless memories”. That’s what I imagined. (Matsumoto)
Riku is the Anemone
Riku is a purple anemone which in flower language means “I will believe in you as I wait”. Riku will affectionately call Zero “Elder Sister” (translators: I believe the context is the same word that maiko (apprentice Geisha) use to address their superiors (full-fledged Geishas)) and he seems to have strong feelings for Kirinmaru in his own way, so I matched (the flower) to that image. (Matsumoto)
If you were to gift Towa, Setsuna, Moroha, and Riku flowers?
I think a small bouquet would suit Towa and Riku and they would genuinely be delighted. I think Towa would give you a wink as a thank you. I want to give Setsuna a large bouquet. She would probably turn her face away slightly, embarrassed. Instead of a bouquet for Moroha, I want to take her to a flower field myself. I think she would enjoy the scenery while saying “This won’t make any money.” (Matsumoto)
If you were to take Towa, Setsuna, and Moroha out in the Spring?
My impression is that the warm spring weather would suit the three of them. If in the feudal era, I think they would enjoy cherry blossom viewing. Ideally, it would be great if their parents were there with them too. If in the modern era, I’d have to say I want them to do some kind of team activity. I want to see something like Towa dressing up Setsuna, going shopping together, and eating delicious food. (Matsumoto)
I want their (the three Yashahimes) hearts to become closer while loving the cherry blossoms!
Illustration Description
Whether it was to let Towa know that there was a butterfly on her shoulder, Riku amiably calls out to her. It feels as though Towa’s encounter with Riku wasn’t all bad?

Bird’s Writing Ideas
Summaries of some of the dcst AUs and other fanfic concepts I’m “working on,” or at least just have a google doc going for. Feel free to send me an ask if you want to hear more about any of them :P
No Stone Wars AU
Terrible name, yes, so sometimes I call this the “Delayed Lions AU.” I am not good at titling things. It’s an AU where Yuzuriha was successfully brought back to camp and revived instead of Tsukasa, and then the lions show up. Working together though, our heroes do manage to scare the lions away for the time being, and Tsukasa doesn’t end up getting revived until way later. Essentially it’s an excuse for me to write a civilization-building story where Senku carries out his plans as he intended before the whole Stone Wars shenanigans happened. Senku does still find Ishigami Village (he has to go to Hakone eventually to collect sulfur) but he’s not nearly as concerned about, ya know, getting murdered. Could be really boring for some people, but like I’ve said I LOVE the civilization building parts of DCST and this is my jam. I did way too much math for this one.
Fem! Senku AU
Exactly what it says on the tin. Tentatively titled “Ishigami Senku: Girl Genius.” I’ve left it ambiguous so far whether Senku is cis or trans, but either way this one is great for exploring how Senku’s decisions and character (and those around her) might be affected by Senku being a girl. For instance, this Senku is more used to being underestimated and patronized than canon Senku and has a slight compulsion to wanting to prove herself, which is in conflict with her desire to surge ahead without caring about what others think of her. Her hair also obeys gravity a little more and she wears it in a ponytail, and she’s a little closer to Yuzuriha than in canon (though Taiju is still her oldest and best friend). I’ve had a few problems with hashing out the plot for this one since I don’t want it to perfectly match canon but I also want it to keep some key story nodes, and the butterfly effect makes it tend to veer wildly off into various directions.
Mermaids AU(s)
I have like, three of these because I couldn’t decide how to go about it and just wanted to write something with mermaids. I like fantasy.
Senku and Taiju are young mermen living in an underwater kingdom, and Senku’s fascinated with the above world, spending his days studying humans and their inventions and trying to come up with something that could allow him to go on land. But then one day something turns the whole Sea Kingdom into stone statues, and it’s up to Senku to venture out into the human world in search of a cure. Lower on my interest scale because most of the story wouldn’t take place among the mermaids.
Inspired by ao3 user Luki’s story Flock where soon after revival petrified humans sprout wings. In this case though, Senku realizes that he’s somehow becoming partially aquatic, only instead of being full on mermanified he ends up more like...mermaids in the Sims 3? Where he has to stay constantly hydrated to survive and his legs turn into a tail when submerged in water. I like this one a lot, actually.
H2O: Just Add Water AU. There was this Australian tv show I used to watch at my friend’s house when we were like...seven, about these three girls who after a strange encounter realized that ten seconds after coming in contact with water, they would turn into mermaids. I’ve tweaked that concept a lot but basically this AU is Senku, Taiju, and Yuzuriha taking the place of the three main characters, and also they’re in Japan instead of Australia, for obvious reasons.
A Single Act of Kindness
AU where 12 year old Tsukasa is rescued from the old man on the beach by another, friendlier old man, one with grey hair with dark tips and red eyes. That’s it, that’s the whole concept. Probably gonna be a oneshot.
Future/Next Gen
Not an AU, but basically a bunch of (very theoretical and self indulgent) ideas I have about the Kingdom of Science post defeating Why-man. All of them stem from a concept I had where Senku finds a protege in Taiju and Yuzuriha’s third oldest child, a girl named Yurika (which is a legitimate girls’ name but Senku was the one who named her and meant it to sound like Eureka! on purpose, as if saying he wished for her to have a life full of discovery. He’ll deny thinking that much about it though). Most of the stories I have in this concept are about Yurika’s teen years, with Senku in his forties.
Suika in Wonderland
Just a funny idea I had where Suika falls asleep to Ukyo telling her an “old British children’s story,” one summer afternoon and finds herself in a strange world where a lot of the bizarre individuals she meets look oddly like some of her friends.
ATLA AU
Recently I did a little speculative thing for this in this post, and I liked it enough to write it down into a more fully fleshed out concept. Story 1 is going to be about Ryusui growing up in the Northern Water Tribe and him meeting the Gaang when they arrive at the end of Book 1, while Story 2 is going to be about Senku and his friends uncovering the Dai Li conspiracy in Ba Sing Se and teaming up with the Gang when they arrive in Book 2. Story 3...well I’d like to do something regarding the Fire Nation characters, so maybe something to do with Amaryllis.

Hey y’all, here’s Chapter 7 of Playlist.
Check out my masterlist HERE to catch up and read my other stories. Let me know if you want to be tagged!
Word count: 6300
“Ashanti”
The name passed over the king’s lips as his fiancee watched him toss and turn in his sleep. Tamala didn’t know what to do. She was so angry she wanted to smother him with his stupid silk pillows, but didn’t want to risk the whole “charged with having committed a regicide” thing. She wanted to know who this Ashanti bitch was and why her man was dreaming about her with a smile on his face. She made a mental note to butter Shuri up and ask her tomorrow.
The king rolled over away from her and continued to dream about the elusive Ashanti while Tamala snuggled deeper into the covers as a tear came to her eye. She knew he didn’t feel as strongly for her as she did for him, but she hadn’t considered there could be another woman. Could she work in the palace? Is this Ashanti even Wakandan? He travelled so much, it was a possibility…
Tamala sighed and then closed her eyes, allowing sleep to take her, but her dreams were nowhere near as good as T’Challa’s. In his dream, he and Ashanti were making love on a white sand beach on a secluded island off the coast of Greece. Every kiss, every touch felt real. He could smell the sea salt and feel her warm skin against his. The taste of her pussy lingered on his lips as he buried himself inside her over and over and over again. Unfortunately, outside of his dreamland his body was responding to his subconscious in ways he had no control over.
By the time he woke up around 6 in the morning his dick was hard as a rock. He silently shuffled out of the bed and to the bathroom, trying in vain not to wake Tamala. When she heard the bathroom door close she sat up in a huff, ready for him to come back out so she could confront him about this Ashanti girl. She waited and waited for several minutes before she got up and walked towards the bathroom door. She pushed it open slightly and caught sight of her fiance stroking his gorgeous dick in the shower. Any other time she would have gladly gotten on her knees for him at the sight, but this time it just made her sick. Even more so when she heard that name slip out his mouth again.
“Ashanti, mmm fuck just like that.”
Tamala closed the door and went back to bed, facing away from T’Challa’s side. When he returned, he wrapped his arm around her waist and pulled her in close. Normally she would give in to his desire for morning sex even though she preferred sex before bed, but this time she pretended to be sleep. She just couldn’t face him yet.
T’Challa was only mildly disappointed, he didn’t enjoy sex with Tamala very much but she was there and he was horny. He wasn’t proud of feeling that way, but at least he was faithful to his fiancee in his waking hours.  He still wished he didn’t have to marry her, but at this point he couldn’t back out or his immigration proposal wouldn’t go through. The council had all the leverage over him, so he felt like he had no choice. Tamala was tolerable most days, so he could manage a loveless marriage for the rest of his life, but as far as children went, they had yet to come to an agreement. T’Challa just wanted one or two, but Tamala wanted a whole tribe of little Udakus. Just the thought of it made T’Challa nauseous, but he knew he and Tamala would have to produce at least one heir to the throne. He shuddered at the thought, not of fucking her but of that being the future he had to look forward to.
As much as he tried to not be, T’Challa was still in love with Ashanti in his waking hours, too. Everything reminded him of her, from his mother’s flowers to rainstorms…she loved the rain. He still listened to their combined playlist from time to time, reminiscing on the few short months it took for him to fall head over heels in love. He wished a lot of things in regards to Ashanti, but mostly he wished they had more time together before things went south. Maybe then she would have been able to trust him more and she wouldn’t have left…
It was a dangerous line of thinking that T’Challa cut off when it reared its ugly head. All the what-ifs were almost as bad for him as his guilty conscience, so he shook himself out of it and got up to start his day. As soon as Tamala heard the door shut she let out the tears she had been holding on to. She got up to go shower and get dressed, too. She had a long day ahead trying to figure out who this Ashanti bitch was, and her first stop would be his little sister.
——-
Oh, oh, oh
Mmm mmm mmm
Bambi, Bambi
(Ba bam bam bi)
My dear, my dear, my dear
(Ba bam bam bi)
My dear, I want you here
(Bambi)
Don’t get too near for there’s lions, beware
(Mmm bam bam bi)
Oh Bambi I won’t lie
If I weren’t in this spiderweb of mine
If grandfather never had seven wives
Then darling you would be love of my life
Oh Bambi it’s my design
To run the jungle I must be a lion
Or be a cheetah but neither is fine
Don’t wanna hurt my dear love of my life
Bambi, Bambi
(Ba bam bam bi)
My dear, my dear, my dear
(Ba bam bam bi)
My dear, I want you here
(Bambi)
Don’t get too near for there’s lions, beware
(Mmm bam bam bi)
Ashanti sang along to the song with Binta as they glided around the kitchen cooking dinner.
“Girrrrl,  I just want Jidenna to spank the fuck out of me. I’d be like ‘thank you sir, another?’” Binta swooned at his voice coming through the speakers.
“That man is capital ‘f’ fine. ‘Ruin my uterus and my life’ fine.” Ashanti joked as Kwame entered the room, swaying to the catchy beat.
“This Jidenna?” he asked.
“Mmmhm.”
“You already know,” they both answered at the same time.
“He’s ‘spit in my mouth daddy’ fine” he added.
“Ew, that’s gross!” Binta screamed at her brother while Ashanti had sex flashbacks to her time with T’Challa. There were several times he would have her stick out her tongue and he would spit in her mouth to remind her she was his dirty little-
“Ashanti!” Kwame yelled.
“Huh?”
“Girl were you even listening?” Binta asked her, knife in hand as she cut up the yams for dinner.
“Honestly no, this conversation has me horny as fuck.” she decided it was best to be partially honest, but not all the way. They didn’t need to know she was fantasizing about her ex, she’d let them continue to think she’s talking about the man behind the smooth voice tickling their ears.
“I can’t even blame you,” Binta said as the twins both laughed. Ashanti joined in and went back to her task at hand, but eventually her mind drifted back to T’Challa, “Bambi” providing the perfect soundtrack for the melancholy feeling she got from those bittersweet memories.
Sometimes I hide
When you FaceTime I text you back a lie
‘Cause I’m afraid to look back in your eyes
I’m terrified you were love of my life
The women among the tribe
They will be jealous of this lullaby
I’ll drink alone in my hotel and cry
'Cause now they know you are love of my life
Bambi, Bambi
(Ba bam bam bi)
My dear, my dear, my dear
(Ba bam bam bi)
My dear, I want you here
(Bambi)
Don’t get too near for there’s lions, beware
(Mmm bam bam bi)
Ashanti was on autopilot through dinner and was relieved to make it back to her room so she could be alone with her feelings. She missed T’Challa. Seeing him at the bazaar the other day only made things worse. She had been doing well, but then when he was in front of her and that same powerful aura she missed so much engulfed her, he had her in his trap once again. If she hadn’t left when she did she would’ve completely forgotten about the man’s fiancee and jumped on him then and there. All those feelings came rushing back to her as the smell of his cologne wafted her way and she knew she had to get out of there before she made a fool of herself. For good measure, she twisted her hips a little more as she walked away and she was sure she could feel his stare on her behind as it twitched out of view.
To distract herself, she decided to work on a necklace commissioned by the River tribe elder, but Jidenna’s words haunted her as her fingers attempted to wire-wrap a large lapis lazuli crystal point.
I wish that we were forever young
I always knew that this day would come
The fork in the road where I cannot run
Between love and many I’m loving one
I got the wedding invitation, Bambi
I’m happy that he wants to make a family
But I cannot promise I won’t run up in the church
There screaming your name, Bambi
No one can take you from me, Bambi
No one can take you from me, Bambi
No one can take you from me, Bambi
Bambi, Bambi
(Ba bam bam bi)
My dear, I want you here
(Ba bam bam bi)
Oh baby, don’t get too near
(Ba bam bam bi)
Oh oh oh, there are lions, beware
(Mmm bam bam bi)
Mmm mmm mmm
I don’t wanna see the wedding
I just wanna see my baby
I just wanna see my baby
Most times Ashanti loved when music spoke to her in that way, but this time she just wanted to block out his words.
The wedding…
The fiancee…
She knew her pining was in vain, and that just made it hurt more. She missed him and regretted her decision, but she really did try hard to not let it get to her. She brought it up with Jamila in therapy and they’ve spent the last couple sessions talking about that regret and learning to forgive herself. She understood the mindset she was in when she made the decision to end things, and she couldn’t fault herself for doing so out of fear. She just wished she could go back in time and do it over, or come to this realization much quicker. Now she had to see wedding coverage on every screen and hologram in the damn country. “What will the princess be wearing?”, “Will the king and future queen have a traditional wedding or more modern?”, and “Royal baby predictions: about a year?” were just some of the Bast-awful headlines she had tried to ignore as of late. It was beginning to be a bit much and she considered going on vacation until after they married since it was only a month away. She had plenty saved up and had never really done anything like that before, so she figured she’d give it a try and take herself on vacation.
Ashanti found a quaint little Air BnB in New Orleans that was well within her budget and allowed for long-term stays. She booked it on the spot, before looking for flights out of the new Wakanda International Airport and found a round trip ticket to New Orleans for $45. Once she paid, her heart rate started to pick up. She was really doing this, she was going to go to a whole other country on her own…and she needed to get a passport asap.
——-
T’Challa was hoping to fly under the radar, and so far the shades and hood seemed to be working. He had left his Dora Milaje back at the palace, much to Okoye’s dismay, because he wanted to do this alone. He wasn’t even sure what this is, but he knew he had to do something.
The king stealthily made his way to the heart of the city. He knew it was probably a bad idea, but he just had to see her again. He walked with the hustle and bustle of the crowds, going unnoticed and therefore not having the luxury of them clearing the path for him. He didn’t mind though, they weren’t rude about it.
As he waited to cross the street he noticed the kid next to him staring at him a little too hard. He checked his surroundings and lifted his shades, sending her a wink. She flashed a snaggletooth smile before saluting him and carrying on her way with her mama. T’Challa shook his head, thinking of the baby girl he wanted to have one day. Wakanda’s future queen.
Speaking of future queens, his wrist vibrated and he looked down to see that Tamala had texted him asking where he was. He rolled his eyes and ignored the message, turning the beads off for the time being.
When Taj’s was in view he stopped walking, disrupting the flow of foot traffic. A couple people cursed him out for blocking the street before he realized he was in the way. He stood on the sidewalk, staring into the storefront. He could make out her profile as she spoke to a customer and the king couldn’t help but stare at her beauty.
The king tried to take a step towards the shop, but didn’t move. He tried again, but was still glued to the spot. His legs had turned to stone and he couldn’t lift his feet to move in her direction. His eyes stayed zeroed-in on her. He watched in awe as her coily hair bounced while she nodded her head, and he missed how she spoke with her hands…it had really been too long. He tried with all his might to move again, but he was still frozen on the spot. He had decided to turn around and go back to the palace when he felt a hand on his arm. He turned to see who it was, and a smile appeared on his face.
“Bisa!”
“Hi dear,” she hugged him and looked over his shoulder at Taj’s to see that Ashanti was still busy and had turned so that her back was facing the window.
“How are you?”
“I should be asking you the same question, out here in disguise spying on my daughter,” she said playfully.
T’Challa laughed as they sat down at a table inside the Mostafa’s restaurant.
“I had planned to actually say something instead of just spying, but I, uh, lost my nerve it seems. I couldn’t go to her.”
There was silence for a moment before Bisa spoke up.
“You still love her?”
T’Challa grew silent again, knowing he shouldn’t say what he most certainly said next.
“Yes, I do.”
Bisa sat back in her chair with a satisfied smirk on her face.
“Good.”
“Good?”
“Yes, good. She still loves you, too. She won’t admit it though. She’s worked through her fear in therapy, but those feelings for you haven’t gone anywhere.” She noticed a tear falling from the king’s eye and she reached out to wipe it away.
“T’Challa, I know you are engaged, but-”
“I have to go through with it, Bisa…for political reasons. I do not love her,” his voice softened with each word and Bisa let out a sigh.
“So you absolutely have to marry her?”
“If I don’t the Mining and Border tribes will not vote for a proposal I have presented them with for Wakanda’s future. She is the Mining tribe princess, so calling it off would anger K’hari, and this would never go through.”
“I thought the king could declare whatever he wanted.”
“No, we are a lot more democratic than most would believe. I have the final say of course, but they can veto my decisions if the vote is high enough. Checks and balances and whatnot…”
“Oh, I wasn’t aware of that…You know, you should go over and talk to her. I bet she’d like that.”
He shook his head. “I thought I was ready, but I need more time. Especially now. Thank you Bisa, you’ve been a wonderful ear.”
“Anytime, son,” she sent him a wink and he chuckled at her nickname.
T’Challa walked back out the door and gave Taj’s one last glance before heading back to the palace.
——-
After her usual morning routine Ashanti strolled into the bazaar, making her way to her shop. She was in a great mood this morning, having dreamed of T’Challa the night before yet again. The dreams used to bring her to tears when she woke up, but now she welcomed them since they were all she could get. She knew that one day they would eventually fizzle out and stop coming to her, but until then she was going to enjoy getting her dream back blown out by the Black Panther.
As usual, her parents were outside cleaning off tables for the morning rush and when they noticed her, there was a certain gleam in their eyes she couldn’t quite place.
“Hi mama, baba,” she hugged them both. “What’s with the looks? I don’t like this…”
Chidi laughed and turned her around so that she could see her shop. Her jaw dropped in shock at the sight before her.
There on her stoop was a huge bouquet of violets, their purple hue seemed to be even brighter than any violet she had ever seen.
Ashanti peeled herself from her father’s arms and walked across the street in a daze. When she reached her door she could only stare at the flowers, noticing there was a note. She was almost too scared to read it, but her curiosity overruled her fear and she reached for the card.
I am sorry, Ashanti. For everything.
-T
In that moment Ashanti knew for sure that he still loved her. Her heart opened up and tears rolled down her face, some bouncing off the purple petals before hitting the ground. She leaned into them and their sweet smell overwhelmed her senses.
Chidi came over to help her move them inside and he smiled at her before giving her a kiss on her forehead. “Give him a call, nugget,” he advised before heading back across the street to his beaming wife.
“Just ‘give him a call’ huh? It’s that easy?” Ashanti said to herself out loud as Jafari entered the shop.
“Wow, who sent those?!” he exclaimed upon seeing the giant bouquet.
“Oh, uh,” she secretly snatched the card and pocketed it. “They’re a ‘thank you’ from the River tribe elder.”
“Funny, I thought they already sent-”
“What are you doing coming in so early?” she tried to change the subject, but he caught on.
“I was in the area…so who are these really from?” Jafari eyed her closely as she struggled to come up with a lie.
“I-I don’t know. No card, see?” He took a look and didn’t see one.
“Ooooh, bosslady has a secret admirer,” he teased.
“No I don’t, for all we know it could be a ‘thank you’ bouquet from somebody.” Ashanti tried to keep the heat off her.
“It’s too big and fancy for a ‘thank you’ bouquet, plus they would’ve left a note. Someone’s sweet on you Shanti.”
“Maybe…well since you’re here can you take over? I have a call to make.”
“Sure thing,” he winked at her and grabbed the broom from her hand. On her way to her workspace in the back, she heard Zina come in before the two started gossipping about who they thought it could be from. They weren’t even close.
Ashanti stared at her rose gold kimoyo beads for a few minutes before she worked up the nerve to activate her communication bead and call him. When she chose his picture her heartrate picked up as the trilling sound filled the air. It continued for longer than Ashanti was used to, so she ended the call assuming he was busy.
As it turned out, he wasn’t busy at all, he was just too nervous to answer her call. When the ringing stopped, his heart dropped and he immediately called her back. When she picked up they just stared at each other and smiled for a moment.
“They’re beautiful, thank you.”
“Anything for you.”
Her heart skipped a beat, but she broke eye contact and looked away for a moment, reminding herself that no matter how many feelings were still involved she would not let herself become his mistress. She had to keep it together.
“You have nothing to be sorry for, by the way. It wasn’t your fault.”
Now it was his turn to look away, fighting tears that welled up in his eyes. He felt a sense of relief wash over him knowing that she didn’t blame him for the incident.
“I blamed myself for a really long time,” he cleared his throat. “So thank you for saying that.”
She could see the pain in his eyes and it was her turn to feel guilty. Moments of silence passed as she stared into his glassy eyes and she contemplated the choices she made. Had she not left him-
“You did what you had to do, I understand that Ashanti. I was never upset at you, only at myself.”
“You had no reason to be, Challa, it was that evil woman,” Ashanti added, tears welling up in her eyes too.
His heart warmed when she called him Challa. He had missed it more than he realized. “I know that now, but…I knew something was coming, I felt it, but I didn’t know what…and for the longest I let that eat me up inside and I…” He let out a heavy sigh.
“You…?”
“I let it drive me to drink. I am an alcoholic, Ashanti. I have been sober for months now, but I was in a very dark place for a long time.”
“That explains the ginger beer at the party.”
“Oh so you were watching me?”
She blushed and tried to hide her grin.
“Everyone was, you’re the king. Oh I never got to wish you a happy birthday, so here it is: Happy birthday!!!”
The two of them shared a laugh.
“Thank you, I really do appreciate that coming from you,” the king said, staring into her chestnut brown eyes as best as he could on a hologram.
“I’m glad. So I guess since we’re sharing, I um…I was too scared to leave my parents’ house for months. I was paranoid and anxious all the time. I couldn’t sleep, I couldn’t eat…it took a long time to get back to semi-normal.”
“Why just semi?”
“Because it never really goes away, Challa. It just becomes manageable.”
He nodded his head in understanding.
“How are you now?” the king inquired.
“It’s much more manageable now, therapy has been good. Having a routine helps. I keep myself busy- oh! Speaking of, your sister is a Bast-send. My jewelry business has been booming ever since I opened my commissions back up, and it’s all thanks to her! And you. So thank you both for that.”
“It is as I said, anything for you.”
“You say that like it’s true.”
“Why isn’t it?”
She paused, thinking over whether she wanted to lay it all out there or not.
“Because you’re getting married.”
——-
Tamala made her way down to Shuri’s lab carrying a basket full of fresh mandazi. She knew the princess had a sweet tooth and figured it would be a good way to bribe her for information. As luck would have it, the prince and princess were both there testing out weaponry. They stopped when they heard the doors swoosh open. When they turned around they both kept their poker faces on as they greeted their future in-law.
“Hi Tamala, what brings you down here?” Shuri asked, trying to sound cheerful.
“Well I came to visit family then figured I’d stop by with these! My mama made them right before I got there so they’re fresh. Have some!” She grabbed one for herself then passed them the basket. They grabbed one each and dug in, surprised at how good they were.
“Damn, tell your mama I said I’m coming to dinner tonight,” N’Jadaka said as he reached for another one.
Tamala ignored him and turned to the princess. “So what are you working on?”
“Weapons,”she responded dryly. Her cousin nudged her in her side and she perked up.
“That sounds cool. Hey, Shuri can I talk to you for a second? Alone, if you don’t mind, N’Jadaka.”
“Nah I don’t mind at all. Need anything from me cuz?”
She mouthed “don’t leave me with her” as Tamala was turned around waving goodbye to the prince. The prince read her lips and chuckled on his way out.
“Aight, catch you at dinner then.”
He jogged up the ramp ignoring Shuri’s piercing gaze. As soon as he was out of sight Tamala turned around and her face immediately took on a seriousness that Shuri had never seen from her.
“Shuri I have to ask you a question and I need you to be completely honest with me. Please, as your sister.”
“Ok…” Shuri was nervous about what she might ask, she was such a bad liar…
“Who is Ashanti?”
Her eyes widened and she had to think quickly about how this needed to go.
“Ashanti…oh the artist? Yes she made necklaces for me and mama a while ago. You’ve seen them-”
“Is that the same Ashanti T’Challa knows?” Tamala asked the nervous princess.
“T’Challa knows so many people-” Shuri struggled to make eye contact with her future sister-in-law and that was all the confirmation she needed. It would be easy to find her now.
The next day, Tamala and her personal Dora Milaje warriors walked through the bazaar causing a scene. The princess had never been seen alone with Doras before, so this was a big moment and Tamala was eating it up. She loved the attention she received as the people moved out of her way to let her pass, it made her feel powerful. That feeling is exactly what she needed to harness in this moment, powerful.
Tamala made it to Taj’s and stared at the storefront in disgust. Through the window she could see the same woman he had been staring at all night at his birthday party and she felt sick to her stomach. Just how long had this bitch been hanging around her man?
Two of her Dora opened the doors for her to enter as the customers left the shop to give her space, unused to royalty moving through the city so aggressively. Ashanti turned to see what was going on and the shock on her face was readable all the way from the door where Tamala stood.
“Hello, are you Ashanti?”
“Y-yes I am your highness.” She saluted her and felt her blood boil.
“Well aren’t you…pretty. Hm. I hear you make custom pieces?”
“Yes, I do,” Ashanti said, scared she knew where this was going.
“Good. Well as you know, I’m getting married in a few weeks. I would like you to make me a necklace fit for a queen. Since that is what I’ll be…his queen, Ashanti.”
The artist’s breath caught in her throat. She knew Tamala had to have found out about the flowers or the calls or the texts they had sent each other in the days following their reconnection. They kept it PG, but there was definitely some flirting going on despite the need to remain platonic.
“Ok. Do you have any inspiration or a design in mind?” Ashanti’s voice trembled.
“No.”
“Ok, um-”
“We both know I’m not here for a necklace, Ashanti.” Tamala said as she leaned on the end of the counter..
Ashanti’s legs trembled under her long flowy skirt and her voice caught in her throat. This was the worst case scenario.
“How long have you been seeing him?”
“Who?”
“Don’t play dumb. My fiance, how long have you been seeing him?” Tamala’s voice rose as she got more and more frustrated with the Merchant girl.
“T’Challa? We’re not-”
“Do not lie to me, I know you have something going on with him.”
“Princess, I promise. We were together over a year ago, not now.”
Tamala stood back up from her perch.
“Then why is he calling your name when he sleeps? Tell me that.”
“I-I don’t-”
“You know what? Save it, just don’t come near him ever again or once I am his queen I will have you exiled from Wakanda.” Tamala said in a huff before storming out of the shop, Dora Milaje in tow. It was about time to close anyway so Ashanti shuffled her feet towards the door to lock up and draw the shades. She could see her parents out in front of the restaurant waiting to talk to her, but she decided to go out the back door and sneak home without talking to anyone. Binta was on a date with Kiki and Kwame had gone to stay with Omar for the weekend, so she knew she would have the house all to herself.
Her beads buzzed, signifying a text. She saw that it was from T’Challa and she erased it before even reading it.
Ashanti stripped herself naked and stared at herself in the mirror for a while before turning on the hot water in her bathtub and filling it up just the right amount before sliding in. The lavender bath bomb she dropped in the water had turned the bath purple and she thought of her breathtaking violets. She knew she couldn’t continue to talk to him and that it was really and truly over now, but she could preserve the flowers and keep them forever. She needed to have something beautiful come out of the last two years.
Not wanting to sit in silence, she called out to her kimoyo AI.
“Hey Kim, play music.”
The tears that had threatened to fall from her eyes finally made the leap as the opening chords to “Bambi” played throughout her bathroom.
——
Two days had gone by and Ashanti still hadn’t responded to him. T’Challa had tried texting and calling her, but the calls weren’t even going through anymore. She had him blocked or changed her number without telling him. Either way, he was upset at the sudden loss of contact, but he knew Ashanti wouldn’t just do that for no reason, so something had to have happened to change her heart so quickly.
The king was visibly tense during the council meeting and even more aggressive in sparring with Okoye and his cousin, which neither one of them were opposed to. By day three he had finally had enough and marched down to his sister’s lab. N’Jadaka was there trying out a new upgrade to the Jaguar habit and T’Challa was relieved they were all in one place so he wouldn’t have to do this twice.
“Ayy, what up cuzzo? Like the new threads?” N’Jadaka’s new upgrade included more visible spots than the last one and he was loving the print.
“Looks good on you.” T’Challa tried to muster up some cheer but couldn’t.
“Why the sour face?” Shuri asked her brother, finally looking away from the screen in front of her and noticing his scowl.
“This stays between the three of us.”
His family nodded and looked on with concern.
“I had been…speaking with Ashanti again-”
“Oh no.” Shuri thought she only said in her head.
“What do you mean oh no?” T’Challa was confused at his sister’s reaction. He knew she loved Ashanti like a sister, so her response made no sense.
“I-I mean, um, you finish telling your story then I’ll um, yeah…” Shuri stumbled out.
N’Jadaka sat back and observed them both in his usual way, sure he knew exactly where this was going.
“Ok, well…long story short, we bumped into each other, then I sent her flowers, and we had been texting and calling back and forth platonically since then…until a few days ago. She just stopped and now my calls won’t go through.”
“Wow, so you and Ashanti huh? Tryna get that old thang back?” the prince joked before getting serious when his big cousin shot him a look.  “You know I support you, but you gotta be real careful man. You’re getting married in like three weeks, just keep that in mind.”
“Yes, I know but-” he was cut off by a sniffle coming from his sister. “Usisi, what is wrong?” His arm wrapped around her shoulder.
“Tamala, she asked me about Ashanti the other day…all I told her was she was the artist who made our necklaces. She said that she heard you say her name in your sleep…”
“Daaaaaamn,” N’Jadaka said exactly what T’Challa felt in that moment. He knew his sister meant no harm, but somehow Tamala had gotten to Ashanti.
The king knew he had two options. He could drop in on Ashanti and try to make things right or he could confront Tamala. He chose the latter so as not to upset Ashanti any further than she surely already was thanks to his fiancee. He excused himself from the lab before giving Tamala a call. Almost immediately after it started to ring, she answered.
“Hi baby!” she answered with a fake smile on her face.
“Hello Tamala, are you busy?” he asked, keeping his voice even.
“Not too busy for you, I just finished-”
“Great, will you meet me at the panther cave in an hour?”
“Sure thing, baby. Is everything ok?”
“Yes everything is fine. See you in an hour.” T’Challa ended the call and ran his hand over his face in exasperation. If he still drank he would have poured himself a glass right about now. To distract himself, he returned to the lab to check out the new upgrades to the Jaguar habit.
Tamala arrived at the cave early since she had been at her parents’ house not too far from there. Her nerves had gotten the best of her when she realized he didn’t seem to be in the best mood and her mind raced over the possibilities until it landed on the one thing she could think of. Her.
When T’Challa arrived a few minutes later she tried to keep a straight face, but her attitude seeped through and he could sense it a mile away. He sighed and rolled his eyes, they hadn’t even had the conversation yet and here she was, already mad.
“Could this have waited until later?” she asked him, annoyance clear on her face.
“What’s the matter now? You were just in a good mood an hour ago.”
“You tell me, T’Challa.”
He could feel his blood pressure starting to rise so he took a couple deep breaths to calm himself.
“Don’t act like a spoiled child, talk.”
“Oh I’m the spoiled child? Ha! Says the man who wants to have his cake and eat it too.”
“What is that supposed to mean?”
“It means I am to be your wife and she is not, so you should act accordingly if you want your little proposal to go through.”
A tense silence followed, his suspicions confirmed. The smug look on Tamala’s face irked him to his core because he knew there was nothing he could do about it.
“So who is this ‘she’ you’re referring to?” he asked for clarification.
“Do not play dumb, T’Challa, it does not look good on you. I am talking about your precious Ashanti. I don’t know how long you have been seeing her behind my back, but it ends today.”
“She is my ex and a friend-”
“I saw how you looked at her, she’s not a friend T’Challa…and she’s also not a concern anymore,” she said flippantly.
“What do you mean?” he took a step forward as she stepped back, bumping into the cave wall as he descended upon her slowly, prowling like a cat.
“I mean, I-I-”
“What did you do?” his voice grew, instilling fear in her heart at the cold look behind his eyes.
“N-nothing, I just told her to leave you alone or-”
“Or?”
“Or I’d have her exiled when I become queen.”
“You will do no such thing!”
He pulled back and lowered his voice when he saw the fear in her eyes.
“And no harm will come to her if you know what is good for you.” he turned to leave but stopped and faced her once more. “You may be my queen, but she will always have my heart. Do not forget this is simply an arrangement.”
With that, he turned and walked out of the cave, heading straight for the Talon. As soon as his shadow disappeared from the cave wall Tamala broke down in tears. She knew he didn’t share her feelings, but she didn’t know just how little he cared. After a few minutes of crying, she regained her composure and sat against the wall with her knees at her chest contemplating her future. She had to do something, or the rest of her life she would be stuck in a loveless marriage, but she couldn’t think of what. Eventually it hit her, and the realization broke her heart.
She would have to call it off.

A Gift Beyond Words
A Connor Kenway x Reader One-Shot
Word Count: 2,420 Warnings: Explicit Language
Author’s Note: DAY 12 OF THE CHRISTMAS FICS. BUCKLE UP PEOPLE IT’S A WILD RIDE TONIGHT. ENJOY! -Thorne
It was all Ellen’s idea to start with, gathering the residents of the Homestead, even Achilles and Robert, to the inn one Friday evening to announce a gift exchange. She laughed at Connor’s bewildered expression, remembering how she had to explain what it was to him, and then Ellen made everyone write their names on slips of paper and toss it in Warren’s hat.
Everyone picked a name, and by pure luck, she’d received Connor’s. It was downright impossible to force away the smile that came across her lips as she stowed the paper in her pocket. She knew by the look on his face that he didn’t receive hers—not that she was upset…only a wee bit. But, it gave him a chance to show appreciation for a friend. She was excited to plan a secret gift for Connor.
Except for the minor detail that she had no idea what he could possibly want considering the fact that he never told her what he wanted. He was too kind that way, considering his wants a burden on her—he’d rather handle it himself than make her worry.
She groaned, laying her head on the bar. “It’s hopeless,” she muttered. “I have no idea what to get him.”
A laugh sounded behind her. “Is your gift exchange receiver the cause of such enormous distress, (Y/N)?”
Sitting up, she glanced over her shoulder, offering a smile to the reverend. “Father Timothy, fancy seeing you in the tavern this late.”
He took a seat beside her, hat sitting on the counter. “I felt like having a warm meal.”
“That’s always a good reason,” She grinned.
Father Timothy regarded her a moment, then said, “You are in distress. Is there anything I can help you with?”
(Y/N) fought a scowl, simply shaking her head. “I’m afraid it’s not a religious problem, Father. No offense.”
He chuckled. “I am a man of God, but I am a friend of man as well.” A smile came across his lips. “I’d be happy to help you any way I can.”
“I—” she started, then let out a heavy sigh. “I got Connor’s name, but I don’t know what to get him.”
His features showed shock. “Really? Even as close as you two are?”
She laid her head back on the bar. “That’s the problem. We’re so close that I know what he has but he’s never told me what he wants.”
Turning her head, she met his eyes. “He’s not exactly the type of man I can buy a new outfit for or even weapons.” Her face pinched and she wagged a finger at him. “He’d never tell, but he’s incredibly picky about his weapons.”
Father Timothy watched her with amusement, then he tapped his chin and suggested, “I think you’re thinking about this too harshly.”
She cocked an eyebrow. “And I solve that how?”
He smiled. “In all the time you’ve known Connor, how happy has he been to receive a gift you bought?”
           (Y/N) shrugged. “I dunno…pretty happy?”
“And if you’ve given him a gift that was handmade? That came from the heart?” he countered.
Silence fell over her, then she stood up and grinned at him. “I know what to get him!” She pulled the man in for a quick hug. “Thank you, Father Timothy!”
Spinning on her heel, she hauled off for the door, him waving at her.
***
A heavy breath left her as she hopped over the ledge and she put her hands on her knees, breathing deeply.
“I don’t know how he goes back and forth this way,” (Y/N) sighed. “He’s absolutely insane to climb up and down these walls.”
She shook herself from her complaining and headed down the final wall, descending into the forest. The village could be seen from where she’d been, and she was happy to know that she was in the right place—except that they weren’t as happy to see an unfamiliar in their village.
The second (Y/N) stepped foot inside, there were muskets and bows pointed in her direction and she raised her hands.
“Skén:nen! (Y/N) iónkiáts! Ratonhnhaké:ton, ontiatén:ro' né:'e.” They faltered at the mention of Connor’s name and she smiled, lowering her hands. “I’m looking for Kanen'tó:kon.”
A young man stepped forward and smiled at her. “You speak our language well.”
(Y/N) huffed a laugh. “Well, Ratonhnhaké:ton teaches me when he can.” She held out her hand. “You’re Kanen'tó:kon, then?”
He nodded, shaking her hand. “I remember seeing you when I came to warn him about Johnson.”
She tipped her head and clasped her hands in front of her. “I wished the situation hadn’t been dire or else I’d’ve introduced myself.”
His eyes scanned her face. “And yet you have come now. Is Ratonhnhaké:ton alright?”
(Y/N) nodded. “Yes, he is. I…needed a favor, but I’m afraid it’ll take a moment to explain.” She offered him a sympathetic look. “Do you have time?”
“I do,” he replied, waving her to follow.
Kanen'tó:kon led her to one of the longhouses near the middle of the camp and gestured for her to enter. When she did, she saw an older woman, wise appearing, and she bowed politely.
The woman smiled at her. “You are the one Ratonhnhaké:ton speaks of when he returns.”
She felt her cheeks warm and directed her gaze to the ground. “I’m…glad my reputation precedes me.” (Y/N) glanced back at her. “May I sit, Oiá:ner?”
The woman nodded. “Of course.” When (Y/N) had, she asked, “What brings you to Kanatahséton? Is Ratonhnhaké:ton well?”
Grinning, she nodded. “He is. I’m actually here for a personal matter…that I don’t need him knowing about.”
Oiá:ner frowned. “You ask a great deal of us by that. We are not ones to deceive our own.”
(Y/N) sighed and rubbed the back of her neck. “It’s nothing major. He wouldn’t be upset or betrayed if he found out.”
“Then what would he be?” Kanen’tó:kon asked, and she could tell the question was a thinly veiled threat.
“Well, I hope he would be happy.” She pulled out a small cylinder from her pack and uncapped it, unrolling the blank parchment inside.
           “What…is that?” he inquired.
(Y/N) glanced at him. “It’s a gift I’m hoping to give him.”
A dark brow arched on Kanen’tó:kon’s forehead. “A blank piece of paper?”
She snorted. “I was hoping that you and your tribe would write something down for him.” His eyes went wide and (Y/N) looked to Oiá:ner. “Ratonhnhaké:ton is currently living at the Davenport Homestead not terribly far from here.”
The woman nodded. “We are aware. He is building up a settlement, is he not?”
She beamed with pride. “Ratonhnhaké:ton has done a fantastic job of rebuilding the Homestead. He’s found so many people new homes and new beginnings.” (Y/N) didn’t realize that they were watching her with smiles. “He’s even helped me become who I am today. I wouldn’t be the person I am—” she went quiet as Kanen’tó:kon chuckled.
Oiá:ner simply smiled. “I am glad he is so important to you.”
(Y/N) coughed to hide her embarrassment. “Oh, you know.”
“So, what exactly are we doing?” he asked.
“Well at the Homestead, the residents are having a gift exchange this Christmas.” She explained. “Christmas is a colonial winter celebration. The gift exchange is meant to be anonymous. Whoever gives you the gift isn’t supposed to tell you. It’s, well, it’s a secret,” (Y/N) finalized.
A heavy sigh left her. “He hasn’t asked for anything recently and I’ve been running in circles to think of something and I realized that maybe a gift like a nice shirt or knife isn’t the best one.”
She met their gazes and murmured, “But I think reassuring words from his family and friends would mean more to him than anything I could ever buy him.”
They seemed shocked at her suggestion and she eyed her hands. “I know it seems a bit big, having everyone write something down, but I know it would make him happy.” (Y/N) got on her knees and bowed. “Please do this for me, and ultimately for Ratonhnhaké:ton.”
When no response was given, she felt tears grow in her eyes, but she held strong to her position and request.
“When Ratonhnhaké:ton mentioned that he loved a colonial woman, I was worried about him. But…it seems I was wrong to question his judgment.”
She looked up at Kanen’tó:kon to see him smiling warmly at her. He gestured to her. “Do you have a writing tool? I would be honored to give him words of encouragement and friendship.”
(Y/N) felt like crying she was so overjoyed, simply nodding and pulling out the ink and quill. She glanced at Oiá:ner who was smiling kindly at her.
***
Connor hurried back to the manor as fast as he could, more than concerned that she was hurt or sick. She hadn’t been at the gift exchange, leaving him to awkwardly wade through the residents by himself. Eventually, he’d learned that she had to have been the one to pull his name because no one had given him a gift.
He stepped into the manor and sped up the stairs to her bedroom, but it was empty. His brows furrowed from confusion when he heard a noise from his own room and he turned, walking down the hall.
Peeking inside, he caught sight of (Y/N) setting a small box on his bed. Overcome with such relief at her safety, he forgot to announce himself and walked up to her, wrapping his arms around her waist.
***
Her face pinched as she set up the box in another fashion, positioning the card beside it this time. But when it fell, she sighed and picked it up, finally deciding to tuck it underneath. Satisfied with her work, she was planning on sneaking out of his room when someone’s arms wound around her.
She jerked in terror, letting out a bloodcurdling scream as she began to thrash against their grasp.
“Let go of me!” she screeched, kicking her legs out. “Get off!”
Their arms rose, folding hers to her chest so that she couldn’t hit them, and they yelled, “(Y/N)! It’s me! Ratonhnhaké:ton!”
Stilling in his arms, she leaned forward and craned her neck, catching sight of her lover, his eyes wide, but humor on his face. (Y/N) let out a groan, her body suddenly turning to jelly as he lowered her to the ground.
“Christ in a handbasket, Ratonhnhaké:ton.” She heaved and whacked his arm. “You scared me half to death.”
Connor chuckled, pressing a kiss to her temple in attempt to appease her. “Apologies, Otsi’tsa. I did not mean to scare you.”
“Uh huh,” she deadpanned, not buying a single word.
“It is true. I was relieved to see you unharmed.” He said, and her brows pulled together.
(Y/N) shook her head. “What? What are you talking about?”
Connor shifted so he could face her, explaining, “When you did not show at the gift exchange, I worried that you had hurt yourself or been hurt.”
She felt her cheeks warm. “Oh…no…I just…” she sighed and reached up on the bed, grabbing his present. She handed it to him. “I didn’t want to give it to you in front of everyone.”
He took it from her, fingers gliding along the wrapped box.
“It’s a bit too personal for a group get together.” She said.
Connor met her gaze. “May I open it?”
           “Of course. It’s yours.”
His face lit up as he started opening it, and (Y/N) felt warmth grow in her chest at how careful he was with the wrapping paper—as if it were an extension of the gift itself.
He set the untorn paper aside and opened the rectangular box, glancing at the scroll of parchment inside. She could see the confusion on his face, and she snorted. “Just unroll it and you’ll see.”
Connor did as she said, and the moment he recognized his people’s language, (Y/N) saw tears well in his eyes. Not knowing if they were tears of sadness, she reached over and placed her hand on his knee.
“Are you…unhappy with it?” she hesitated, and he gaped at her, mouth moving, but no words coming from him. The tears started falling down his cheeks and he quickly shoved the paper forward, so they wouldn’t drop on the ink.
She reached forward, frantically wiping them away. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to make you sad, Ratonhnhaké:ton.” (Y/N) felt tears growing in her own eyes. “Oh, this was a bad idea, I’m so sorry,” she lamented. “Please forgive me for—”
“Thank you,” he croaked. “Thank you, (Y/N).”
Her hands stopped moving, resting on his face and she doubted, “You like it?”
A watery laugh left him, and he nodded, placing the scroll back in the box and reached up to hold her hands.
“I love it.” he confessed. “This gift is—” Connor seemed a loss for words, and he said that, “This gift is beyond words.” He shifted her hands, pressing his lips to her palms. “There are no words to describe what this means to me.”
Her eyes twinkled as she smiled at him. “I’m glad…so glad that you love it.”
Connor shifted his hands and cupped her cheeks. “Niá:wen ki’ wáhi, (Y/N).”
She beamed at him. “You’re welcome, Ratonhnhaké:ton.” Leaning forward, she pressed herself to his chest, feeling him wrap his arms around her.
They sat in silence for a while, then he whispered, “You got the entire village to write?”
(Y/N) hummed. “I did. Also got the shit scared out of me when I was greeted by guns.” She snorted. “Should’ve expected that one though. Being a stranger and all.”
He chuckled and she felt it through her side. “We are welcoming, and wary of strangers, but—” Connor tilted her chin up. “You are not a stranger to my village, or me.”
She hummed. “I’m not?” He nodded and she slipped her hand in the opening at the top of his shirt, palm pressed flat to his chest; his heart skipped a beat under her hand, and she murmured, “Then show me.”
           “Show you?” Connor quietly repeated.
(Y/N) lightly dug her nails into his skin, purring, “Show me I’m not a stranger to you, Ratonhnhaké:ton.”
His Adam’s apple bobbed, and he ran his thumb along her bottom lip. “You walk thin ice, (Y/N).”
           She winked. “For you? Always.”
Connor couldn’t help but chuckle, pressing a kiss to her lips. “Konnorónhkwa.”
“I love you, too,” she breathed.

hi ever!! 3, 4, 8, and 18 for the ask game!
BLUE!! 💜💜 (Like, “SUKI!!” But it’s you!)
3. What is that one scene that you’ve always wanted to write but can’t be arsed to write all of the set-up and context it would need? (consider this permission to write it and/or share it anyway)
Oof... This is tricky.
Okay. So I reference this conversation in a future chapter of Covered in You, so you guys haven’t seen it yet. (I guess that makes this somewhat of a spoiler.) Without giving away too much, the scene I would like to write but likely won't is a scene in which Katara ends her relationship with Aang. They have to come to terms with the fact that they see their lives going in very different directions and that they have some very conflicting values regarding certain things. And she has to tell him that she just doesn’t see a way for them to move forward together.
It’s not that I can’t be arsed to write it because of set up and context, it’s that I’m very aware of the fact that people really love Aang and I don’t want to make waves. (Not that it would be a scene that bashes him. It just involves some headcanons that I’m hesitant to write.)
4. Share a sentence or paragraph from your writing that you’re really proud of (explain why, if you like)
“Katara is not to be underestimated either, however. As victory flashes in Ayako’s dark eyes, the waterbender kicks out, landing a blow to her opponent’s calf and knocking her off balance. Faster than lightning, she pivots, her fingers wrapping around Ayako’s wrist. There is a weight shift, a tipping point, and Katara rolls forward like a cresting wave, bringing Ayako over her shoulder. The other girl’s body slaps to the ground, the breath whooshing from her lungs.” - Your Soul Has Crushed Mountains
I don’t write action scenes! I consider myself very bad at them. But I worked hard on this opening spar in YSHCM and I think it turned out okay, all things considered! (You wouldn’t believe how many martial arts videos I watched in order to get that scene somewhat readable.)
8. Is what you like to write the same as what you like to read?
Yeah! I think so. I’m a big sucker for Zutara AUs. I love to write ‘em. I love to read ‘em. Let me watch them fall in love with each other over and over again in a million different (and sometimes similar) ways! I’m not much of an action/adventure person (can’t write it either). Gimme my OTP staring longingly at each other from across crowded rooms and pining for one another any day of the week!
18. Tell us the meta about your writing that you really want to ramble to people about (symbolism you’ve included, character or relationship development that you love, hidden references, callbacks or clues for future scenes?)
AHHHH! YES! Okay. So.
*takes a deep breath*
*the intro to TSwift’s “...Ready For It?” plays*
You were supposed to see this idea in Ten Strides first, but it ended up making its first appearance in Covered because of how prompts fell for Zutara Month. I know we’ve all spent a lot of time positing what the Southern Water Tribe’s betrothal item(s) would be. And this is my take on it.
Rewatching ATLA, I’ve noticed that Katara starts wearing her hair down once they reach the Fire Nation. I’m sure there are any number of explanations for it. I myself first thought, “Oh, well, she’s just trying to fit in with Fire Nation folk.” But then I thought of Ty Lee and her braid and that started me off down this headcanon I’ve developed regarding Katara’s hair (which will now feature heavily in any fic I write from here on out).
So my theory is that braids are for young girls in the Southern Water Tribe. Girls who haven’t reached the age of majority. But when they reach the age of majority, they wear their hair half up, the way Katara does. In my mind, the age of majority for girls in the Southern Water Tribe is fifteen. Which would mean (in my own personal headcanon) that Katara is fifteen by the end of the war (you can see evidence of this headcanon littered throughout my fics). This also makes sense if you believe that most waterbenders are born in winter. If the seasons and hemispheres in the world of ATLA work the way ours do, then the fact that they’re in the Fire Nation by summer would mean that Katara has turned fifteen because it is winter in the South Pole. Thus, Katara wearing her hair half up (as she does for the remainder of the series) means that she has reached the age of majority in the Southern Water Tribe!
I then theorize that women in the Southern Water Tribe wear their hair this way until they settle on the person they want to marry. When they’ve decided, they then wear their hair in some kind of updo as a signal to their tribe and that person. If that person reciprocates, they present her with a set of beads for her to wear in her new hairstyle. (Hakoda keeps the beads he carved for Kya in a jar on his desk in the beginning of Covered and Sokka is carving beads for Suki.) This makes the process of getting engaged in the Southern Water Tribe one of much more equal footing that the tradition of betrothal necklaces in the Northern Water Tribe.
Following that, women wear their hair up for as long as they are married. Nobody aside from their S.O. and children is ever supposed to see them with their hair down again as it’s considered too intimate.
These meta asks for writers are pretty cool! Come ask me some things!

double happiness at your door
Extra 15: 姻缘树 (Marriage tree) ?! | previous parts here
The mortal realm has always been of interest to Wei Wuxian, whose curiosity and constantly wandering attention span means he often goes wandering around to all sorts of different places in search of amusement. And with how quickly time passes in the mortal realm, it’s always full of new and exciting things to see.
He’s wandering around the marketplace in one of the larger towns at the foot of a mountain in Yiling, a stick of candied hawthorn in hand, minding his own business, when he notices the people around him whispering and pointing towards something up ahead. Then two young maidens hurry past him in that same direction, giggling as they nudge each other along.
“No, you should ask first,” one girl cries, red-faced and shaking her head. “I’ll only do it if you go first.”
“What? No!” her friend complains. “I don’t want to go by myself! Come with me, we’ll ask together.”
Curious, he falls into step beside them and catches their attention by clearing his throat. They jump, startled, and eye him warily as he offers a deep bow and a friendly smile.
“Pardon me, Guniang,” he says in his most charming voice. “I was just wondering if you would know what is going on up ahead. Everyone seems terribly excited.”
The wariness in their eyes gives way to flustered giddiness as the girls blush and giggle at his smile. He smirks. Even the greatest of immortals are not completely resistant to the charms of the Fox Tribe, let alone two young, mortal women. One of them tucks a lock of hair behind her ear and peeks up at him shyly.
“Gongzi has not heard of the yinyuan tree?” she asks. Wei Wuxian shakes his head. “It’s a tree that magically sprouted from the ground one night on the north end of town and people say it’s been blessed by Yue Lao. It shows you your destined marriage partner!”
Wei Wuxian snorts quietly. A magical tree that shows your romantic destiny? Blessed by Yue Lao himself? Nie Huaisang’s management of his department must be getting lax if Yue Lao had enough free time to do something as frivolous as planting a magical tree in a random mortal city!
“Oh?” he asks, curious. “How do you know it’s blessed by Yue Lao? How does it show you your destined marriage partner?”
“The tree’s branches are all twisted!” the other girl exclaims in excitement. “It looks just like a tongxinjie! You just have to stand on one side and look through the gap in the centre of the knot and you’ll see your future partner!”
That sounds…unlikely, but Wei Wuxian has seen mortals who believe in stranger things. At least this sounds relatively harmless. Perhaps a random immortal who got bored and planted a random tree to prank gullible people in the mortal realm. He makes a show of nodding his head and tapping his chin thoughtfully.
“Thank you, Guniang, for your insight,” he says. He bows. “I wish you both the best of luck for a happy union!”
The girls giggle and return his bow quickly.
“All the best regards to you as well, Gongzi,” they reply.
Wei Wuxian follows them at a more sedate pace in the direction of the tree, nibbling at his candied hawthorn. He has to admit that the tree, when he sees it, really does look like a true lover’s knot. The branches are twisted around each other—definitely not natural, not with how symmetrical it looks—and in the centre of all those twisted branches is a single gap, just large enough for someone to peek inside.
A small crowd has already gathered around the tree by the time he gets close enough, and he watches as they approach it one-by-one. Some people walk away, disappointed; others jump back with a startled giggle; there are also those who remain silent, red-faced, and walk away without a word. But it’s clear that everyone seems to be seeing something in the tree.
When it’s his turn, Wei Wuxian polishes off the last of his candied hawthorn and skips up to the tree. He runs his hands over the trunk, the surface smoothed over by constant touching, and frowns. No sign of magic, or any sort of spiritual power. That’s odd.
His thoughts are interrupted by a loud cough from behind him.
“Are you going to look or not?” a man shouts. “Don’t hold up the line!”
He glances back over his shoulder at the disgruntled and impatient crowd, then back at the hole in the tree.
Well, here goes nothing, he thinks, and leans in to take a look.
The gap is only just wide enough to peek through, so it takes him a second to find an angle that isn’t obstructed by twigs and branches. When he finally gets a clear view, a familiar figure crosses his line of sight.
“AH!” His cry attracts the attention of everyone in the vicinity and they all stop and stare as he launches himself around the tree. “Xiao-xianshi!”
It’s the young cultivator who had attacked him on the mountain! Even if it had been ten, almost twenty years ago by now and his memory is not the best, there is no way Wei Wuxian could forget a face that handsome. And so his type, too! Amber eyes widen in surprise as they catch sight of him, so he takes it as an invitation and bounces over cheerfully.
“Fox Demon,” his young cultivator says stiffly. Wei Wuxian pouts.
“I’m not a fox demon!” he protests. “And I have a name!”
A tiny frown appears between perfectly sculpted brows.
“What are you doing here?” the young cultivator asks, ignoring his complaints. Then he notices the crowd staring. “What did you do?”
“Hey!” Wei Wuxian pouts. “I was just checking out this yinyuan tree!”
“Yinyuan tree?” He glances over at the tree, confused. “What is that?”
“It shows you your future marriage partner!” he chirps, cocking his head to one side with a sly grin. “Can you guess who it said I’m going to marry?”
He waggles his eyebrows suggestively and is delighted to see the young cultivator’s ears turn bright red. How cute!
“Say, Xianshi…” he says slowly, reaching out to walk his fingers up along one white-robed arm. “What are you doing here?”
The arm beneath his fingers tense and pull away.
“Hunting,” he replies. “There were reports of demons attacking people in the next village.”
Wei Wuxian gasps, his hands flying to his mouth with exaggerated shock.
“Oh no!” he says. “Did you pin them against a wall and attack them with your big sword as well? I thought I was the only one!”
He hears a few scandalised gasps from the crowd behind him, but he’s more interested in the way his young cultivator’s jaw clenches and his amber eyes darken. He looks furious. He is so Wei Wuxian’s type. How can he possibly resist?
“I’m heartbroken, Xianshi,” he cries dramatically, pressing a hand over his heart to illustrate his point to their captive audience. “I’ve been pining over you after our encounter for all this time! And now to find you’ve been dallying with others behind my back! How could you be so cruel?”
The crowd murmurs sympathetically and he catches a few older women shooting glares in the young cultivator’s direction, who is frozen in place in a state of shock and indignation. Wei Wuxian whips out a handkerchief from his sleeve and dabs at his eyes with a loud sniff.
“I was so happy when I saw you through the yinyuan tree,” he sighs forlornly. “I thought it must have been a sign that we were meant to be! Oh, I’m such a fool!”
“Don’t let him get away with it, Gongzi!” one woman shouts encouragingly. “Make him take responsibility!”
Her companions join in as well, sympathetic to his plight. He bows to them, still sniffling, and thanks them humbly for their support. He feels a thrum of spiritual energy from behind him and turns around to see the young cultivator, sword in hand, trembling with fury, and immediately drops his act.
“Hahaha, just kidding,” he laughs, backing away with his hands clasped behind his head. “Don’t take it so seriously, Xianshi! It was just a joke!”
“Wei Wuxian!”
“Oh you do remember my name! I’m flattered, really Xianshi, but I still don’t know yours—”
He yelps at the flash of blue light hurtling towards him, jumping back just in time to narrowly avoid it slashing him open from hip to shoulder. The crowd screams and backs away.
“Okay, okay, no more playing!” Wei Wuxian laughs, dancing out of reach of the next strike. “I’ll see you around again someday, Xianshi!”
He dodges another strike and makes a break for it, blowing him a kiss on the way.
