I have not, but I’m now saving it for v1.2 :)
Skip Google for Research
As Google has worked to overtake the internet, its search algorithm has not just gotten worse.  It has been designed to prioritize advertisers and popular pages often times excluding pages and content that better matches your search terms
As a writer in need of information for my stories, I find this unacceptable.  As a proponent of availability of information so the populace can actually educate itself, it is unforgivable.
Below is a concise list of useful research sites compiled by Edward Clark over on Facebook. I was familiar with some, but not all of these.
Google is so powerful that it “hides” other search systems from us. We just don’t know the existence of most of them. Meanwhile, there are still a huge number of excellent searchers in the world who specialize in books, science, other smart information. Keep a list of sites you never heard of.
www.refseek.com - Academic Resource Search. More than a billion sources: encyclopedia, monographies, magazines.
www.worldcat.org - a search for the contents of 20 thousand worldwide libraries. Find out where lies the nearest rare book you need.
https://link.springer.com - access to more than 10 million scientific documents: books, articles, research protocols.
www.bioline.org.br is a library of scientific bioscience journals published in developing countries.
http://repec.org - volunteers from 102 countries have collected almost 4 million publications on economics and related science.
www.science.gov is an American state search engine on 2200+ scientific sites. More than 200 million articles are indexed.
www.pdfdrive.com is the largest website for free download of books in PDF format. Claiming over 225 million names.
www.base-search.net is one of the most powerful researches on academic studies texts. More than 100 million scientific documents, 70% of them are free

Searching best practices on JSTOR
Hi Tumblr researchers,
As promised, we're going to dive into some best practices for searching on JSTOR. This'll be a long one!
The first thing to note is that JSTOR is not Google, so searches should not be conducted in the same way.
More on that in this video:
youtube
Basic Search on JSTOR
To search for exact phrases, enclose the words within quotation marks, like "to be or not to be".
To construct a more effective search, utilize Boolean operators, such as "tea trade" AND china.
youtube
Advanced Searching on JSTOR
Utilize the drop-down menus to refine your search parameters, limiting them to the title, author, abstract, or caption text.
Combine search terms using Boolean operators like AND/OR/NOT and NEAR 5/10/25. The NEAR operator finds keyword combinations within 5, 10, or 25 words of each other. It applies only when searching for single keyword combinations, such as "cat NEAR 5 dog," but not for phrases like "domesticated cat" NEAR 5 dog.
Utilize the "Narrow by" options to search for articles exclusively, include/exclude book reviews, narrow your search to a specific time frame or language.
To focus your article search on specific disciplines and titles, select the appropriate checkboxes. Please note that discipline searching is currently limited to journal content, excluding ebooks from the search.
youtube
Finding Content You Have Access To
To discover downloadable articles, chapters, and pamphlets for reading, you have the option to narrow down your search to accessible content. Simply navigate to the Advanced Search page and locate the "Select an access type" feature, which offers the following choices:
Tumblr media
All Content will show you all of the relevant search results on JSTOR, regardless of whether or not you can access it.
Content I can access will show you content you can download or read online. This will include Early Journal Content and journals/books publishers have made freely available.
Once you've refined your search, simply select an option that aligns with your needs and discover the most relevant items. Additionally, you have the option to further narrow down your search results after conducting an initial search. Look for this option located below the "access type" checkbox, situated at the bottom left-hand side of the page.
Additional resources
For more search recommendations, feel free to explore this page on JSTOR searching. There, you will find information on truncation, wildcards, and proximity, using fields, and metadata hyperlinks.

"The U.S. Department of Education announced Monday that it would continue to operate its online library, known as ERIC, after allowing it to lapse last week. The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) had sought significant cuts to the document repository that is used by 14 million people a year, and allowed funding to run out on April 23. That ended the ability of the Education Department to add new research reports and documents to the library that is used by education policymakers, researchers and teachers.
"'We are dedicated to sharing knowledge about the condition of education and ‘what works’ to improve student achievement,' said Matthew Soldner, the acting director of the Institute of Education Sciences, in announcing the continuation of the ERIC. A new, albeit much smaller contract was signed on April 24, according to the Federal Procurement Data System. [emphasis added]
"Soldner said that 'no content has been removed or deleted from ERIC.' He added that the 'preservation policy is unchanged: we will not remove an article in ERIC unless it is retracted by the publisher.'"
A cut to the budget will either reduce the number of papers added to ERIC, or slow its intake. The article above also states that the ERIC helpdesk will now be gone. The ERICA, or ERIC Archive, has been created over at the Data Rescue Project to coordinated copies of materials stored on the Wayback Machine.

u can tell a lot abt people by their google searches. not even like what they're searching about but how they search for it. like "horse lifespan" vs "how long horse live" vs "how long does a horse live?" or whatever

Tarantulas has really intense abandonment and self esteem issues. The moment anyone shows him even the slightest bit of kindness/interest, he latches on to an unhealthy amount. After having been discarded by Prowl, and then later Overlord, he is incredibly clingy.
He's the type to constantly give and give until he has nothing left. If he drowns people in gifts/inventions, maybe they will be more likely to stay.
Tarantulas is also notorious for being possessive and unhealthily obsessive. If someone wants him to stop crowding them, they would need to sit him down and explain what he's doing wrong, and why he can't do that anymore.

strap in for this week's fic flavor: the failsafe episode of season one of the young justice cartoon except the simulation just won't. fuckin. end.
(fics that inspired this at the end)
If I ever did sit down to make my own fic, I'd split it in 3 parts:
The Simulation: bits and pieces of the 40 years Dick lives after most everyone he knows has died
The Return: the immediate aftermath and healing from the trauma of having not-quite-actually lived a whole life only to wake up and find out it was all fake. nothing traumatizing about that whatsoever.
The Unintended Consequence: aka the twist I'd love to add and would hint to in the second part - finding out the simulation, through martian mind fuckery, pulled from the real world (and in many cases, from real minds). Dick meets a bunch of people he didn't think were real outside the confines of his simulated life. A bunch of rowdy, heroism-inclined teens across the years get to meet the sibling/friend/mentor figure they all dreamed up one night.
(actual idea snippets under the cut)
.
Dick Grayson is 14 and most of the world's heroes have died. He planned a suicide mission that left him the sole survivor of a doomed team he helped found. The invasion may have been stopped, but is this really the price he wanted to pay?
The first face he sees in the infirmary is Roy's, and he has to close his eyes and just breathe for a few minutes because for one painful moment he'd thought it was Wally. But this isn't the world where his best friend miraculously survived alongside him. This is the one where he got his best friend killed and didn't even give him the courtesy of following behind him. Behind them.
.
Dick Grayson is 27 and has lived longer without Bruce than with him. The invasion's anniversary is always a tough day for him, but that morning seems especially harrowing. He'll get shit for it later, but can't resist stepping out onto the balcony of the manor's master bedroom (Bruce's old bedroom) for a smoke -- his first since he'd promised to quit if Jason, just 15 then, did too.
"Bad habits tend to pile up," he'd said, a rueful quirk to his tired grin. He'd tapped the cigarette twice on the railing and added, lower, "and this one's especially nasty, huh."
He inhales, watches the sun creep across the horizon, and lets acrid smoke burn through his lungs for a long moment before blowing it out in a small cloud. His eyes water, but he doesn't cough. It tastes just as bad as it did the first time he smoked one, not even a year after the invasion and treading water as Robin proved insufficient.
There hadn't been enough heroes to go around then, and Dick had been trained by one of the best. It hadn't been fair, but it had been his plan that had ultimately stopped the invasion. His shoulders everyone's expectations fell on.
He takes another drag, then smudges the lit end against the rail he's leaned on when he hears a boot scuff purposefully against the roofing above him.
"Todd and Pennyworth will be upset with you."
He doesn't turn around. Damian doesn't jump down to join him.
.
Dick Grayson is 54 and wakes up in a room full of ghosts. He hears his long-dead father-figure tell his long-dead team about a simulation they weren't meant to win. A training exercise gone wrong and only half a day spent under their mentors' careful, if slightly panicked, supervision.
He looks at his hands, watching the way his gloves crease when he flexes them in and out of tight fists. He looks at his team, their eyes a little haunted but shoulders slumped with relief even as they grumble. Batman's heavy, gloved hand settles on his shoulder and the weight of it is a nauseating mix of foreign-familiar.
He opens his mouth. Closes it.
Tears prick his eyes behind his domino mask, and he tells himself the suffocating, acidic void building in his chest is just some leftover side effect of the ordeal and not the grief-guilt of outliving yet another family (no matter that they hadn't been real in the end).
.
Dick Grayson is 16-going-on-56 and well used to the coincidences piling up between his simulated life and the real thing. Some of it -- missions and villains he remembers cropping up -- he's marked for Bruce to review and sort as he pleases. Some -- security for the cave, team building anecdotes, and training regimens -- he's shared with the team. And some he keeps only for himself.
Tim is one of those. He knows it's not fair to the kid (so much smaller now than he ever was when Dick lived his simulated life), but he can't help being selfish just for this. Tim is the one kid he's sure he didn't make up, and if Dick's taken to babysitting the kid just to be near at least one member of the family he built for himself in the wake of the worst days of his life .... Well, anyone who says shit about it can happily stand in line to have their teeth kicked in.
Despite this, it still catches him off-guard when he sees a familiar face pop up in one of Bruce's reports.
Jason Todd, caught boosting tires off the batmobile, is nearly the same age now as he was when Dick met him. He stares at the words, but none of them really sink in beyond the kid's name and address. He's moving before he's even made the decision.
He's used to the world kicking him when he's down - lived it for 40 frustrating years. But he has Bruce again. And things with Tim have been so good. And he's always been selfish when it comes to family. If he could just see Jason. If he could just meet him. If he could talk to him.
If if if if if--

It was supposed to be a simple in and out job. Soundwave sent Rumble and Frenzy- as well as a bot by the name of Reflector for backup- behind enemy lines to gather intel. All they had to do was sneak into the Autobot base while Soundwave and his troops drew the enemy out, allowing his deployers to download any files they could get their servos wrong.
It didn't end how it was supposed to.
Laserbeak was soaring high above the battle, allowing Soundwave a bird's-eye view, while Ravage weaved inbetween his pedes as he fought back against any approaching Autobots. Soundwave danced backwards with the ease of a skilled gladiator, helm tilting out of the way of the Autobot's sword, only to disarm the mech and run him through with his own weapon. Ravage held no fear of being stepped on by his host, years of experience fighting alongside Soundwave making the movements second nature as he dodged, weaved, and bit at any legs that came too close.
Where there had previously been anticipation and the eagerness to complete the battle over the bond with his symbiotes, there was suddenly an all encompassing fear. Thick, overwhelming, and horribly terrifying.
Soundwave didn't even hear the explosion. All he felt was the sudden snap and resulting shatter over the bond. With it, came an immense amount of pain- more than Soundwave had ever experienced prior. Laserbeak fell from the sky, Ravage collapsed at his pedes, and Soundwave's own legs threatened to buckle. The sheer magnitude of the sudden loss was enough to render both present deployers unconscious.
Rumble and Frenzy were gone. Their tethers to his spark had been brutally ripped from his very life force, leaving behind a gushing, aching hole.
Something tore through the metal of his shoulder, energon exploding from the wound. Soundwave stumbled forward, but managed to keep his balance. Every ounce of his frame shook with emotions he couldn't even begin to comprehend. The urge to just simply collapse into a heap was beyond tempting, but then he felt his pede brush against the unconscious feline beneath him.
Blinding rage filled him. Nobody touched his deployers. Soundwave lunged forward, data cables ripping from their casings and stabbing through three approaching Autobots with a sickening crunch. The spark of one was yanked out in a burst of gore, then promptly detonated with a quick use of his Outlier ability. It exploded, taking its owner, and the other two Autobots, with it. Another bot approached, which Soundwave immediately slammed into with all of his weight. They toppled backwards, pedes slipping on spilled energon and tripping over the husk of a fallen comrade. Without another thought, Soundwave slammed his pede down into their helm, revelling in the gruesome crack and resulting squealch.
By the time Autobots stopped approaching him, there was a graveyard of filth surrounding him. Soundwave, with the gentleness of a parent and their child, lifted Ravage and held him close to his chest. He staggered forward, ignoring how his legs wavered with every step. A sob caught in his throat, but his Vow made quick work of quieting it. He picked his way over to Laserbeak's unconscious form, then carefully scooped her up as well. With the last two remaining deployers safely within his grasp, Soundwave finally broke.
He collapsed to his knees, frame shaking so violently that it hurt. His lack of typical optics meant that he couldn't cry, but his frame reacted as though he was. Chest heaving, throat tight, vents gasping. His spark burned in a way he had never experienced before. Empty, broken, hurt, lost.
It wasn't until Megatron finally found him at least an hour later that he was collected, gently being coaxed away from the carnage of the battlefield.
They were gone. Truly, absolutely, completely gone.
Numbed by the cruel world around him, Soundwave could only hope that Rumble and Frenzy had received a quick and painless death.

Learning abt spindles is Fascinating, I'm pouring over The Wood DatabaseTM to figure out which wood is the most durable to make the most well informed Indulgent Purchase
#switching between the catalogue and the database typing in wood names and rubbing my hands together gleefully#tell me the secrets of the wood O database#the more expensive spindles are made with more durable wood#there's tiny spindles made of apple tree wood which is soooo cute but I'm not interested in getting a tiny spindle#apparently apple tree wood is anywhere from moderately durable to Not durable#oak seems like a good choice for durability and looks...beech is the cheapest but oak is only $2 usd more#the database is so detailed that it has several entries for some species - there's several each for meranti and oak and beech#now I wish the spindle catalogue was more detailed abt the wood varieties even though it's respectably detailed already 🤧#but then again idk if wood type really matters beyond aesthetics#some of these woods are more perceptible to rot and insect infestation but I'm not gonna leave the spindle outside or anywhere wet#I do feel kinda bad for getting another spindle when I already have a top whorl spindle#but I wanna learn how to spin bottom whorl w/a turkish spindle and get centre pull yarn balls as an added bonus#that's partly why I'm trying to find the most durable spindle so that it hopefully lasts me for many many years#another thing is that my current spindle seems to be above average heavy...all the turkish spindles I've researched aren't more than 42g#my spindle is 51g....makes me wonder if it'd be much easier to spin finely on a lighter spindle even one that's 10g lighter#zeke speaks
