Dream Journaling
Tumblr media
Dream journaling - the practice of recording fragments of your dreams each morning while they are still relatively fresh in your mind. Good dreams can be just as informative as bad dreams; both can be useful instruments for unlocking the creativity that goes unnoticed during your waking life.
How to Keep a Dream Journal
Do it first thing. The key to recording dreams is speed and immediacy. The feeling of a dream’s logic slipping away the moment you try to explain it to someone else is a familiar one: Keep your dream journal and a pen close at hand. That way, you can jot down everything you remember when you first wake up—whether that's in the middle of the night or the next day.
Write in the present tense. Describing your dream world in the present tense, as if it is happening again in real-time, may help you resurrect details and follow the action more clearly.
Try to capture emotions, not just plot points. Get in the habit of noting how your dream self felt in any given situation. Were you apprehensive inside of this dream? Was it in a familiar setting? Was there an aspect about that dream that was thrilling, or did it terrify you?
Track your sleep cycles. You are dreaming most deeply during your REM cycle (or rapid-eye-movement cycle), for about two hours at a time. Understanding how long it takes you to cycle through the different stages of your sleep patterns may allow you to record dreams immediately post-REM, when your brain has returned to a semi-alert state.
Ways Dream Journaling Can Benefit You
Reveals dream patterns. Dream journaling over an extended period of time can reveal patterns, through recurrent dreams or the repeated appearance of important details in your waking life, and the more familiar your mind becomes with these patterns, the more awareness it might begin to have in wielding them while asleep. Some repeated imagery, or dream symbols, can even be analyzed using a dream dictionary.
Breaks creative blocks. Dream journaling can also be a way to break a creative block. Dream researchers believe that the subconscious mind creates scenarios to solve particular problems or explore the curiosities of a day’s events, bringing all those things you may have seen or heard without much thought into the light.
Helps practice lucid dreaming. One compelling reason for keeping a dream journal is to develop a knack for lucid dreaming, which allows a dreamer to navigate dreams in a conscious state. They are able to observe the setting and world of their dream as if they were awake, and can then control some aspects of how the story unfolds. Some lucid dreamers believe that they are better able to synthesize events of real-life into creative expression, the fruits of which are recorded the next day in a dream journal, or dream diary.
Some dream journalers sketch what they see, while others prefer to free-write.
You can even purchase journals specifically formatted for dream recording, with prompts and grids that make it easy to analyze its contents at-a-glance.
If you find that your scribbled notes are unintelligible the next day, or trying to capture details in writing only makes them disappear faster, keep a voice recorder by your bed, and try dictating your dream journal instead.
The mysteries unspooling in your own head while dreaming can be better than an action movie.
Or so mundane that they’d put you to sleep if you weren’t already, you know, asleep.
There is a multitude of lives waiting to be lived, just beyond the veil of sleep.
Many artists have found inspiration in the strange and magical qualities of their dreams, and lucid dreamers hone their skills by practicing dream recall—which is precisely where dream journaling comes in.

April 14, Xi'an, China, Shaanxi History Museum, Qin and Han Dynasties Branch (Part 3 – Innovations and Philosophies):
(Edit: sorry this post came out so late, I got hit by the truck named life and had to get some rest, and this post in itself took some effort to research. But anyway it's finally up, please enjoy!)
A little background first, because this naming might lead to some confusions.....when you see location adjectives like "eastern", "western", "northern", "southern" added to the front of Zhou dynasty, Han dynasty, Song dynasty, and Jin/晋 dynasty, it just means the location of the capital city has changed. For example Han dynasty had its capital at Chang'an (Xi'an today) in the beginning, but after the very brief but not officially recognized "Xin dynasty" (9 - 23 AD; not officially recognized in traditional Chinese historiography, it's usually seen as a part of Han dynasty), Luoyang became the new capital. Because Chang'an is geographically to the west of Luoyang, the Han dynasty pre-Xin is called Western Han dynasty (202 BC - 8 AD), and the Han dynasty post-Xin is called Eastern Han dynasty (25 - 220 AD). As you can see here, in these cases this sort of adjective is simply used to indicate different time periods in the same dynasty.
Model of a dragonbone water lift/龙骨水车, Eastern Han dynasty. This is mainly used to push water up to higher elevations for the purpose of irrigation:
Tumblr media
Model of a water-powered bellows/冶铁水排, Eastern Han dynasty. Just as the name implies, as flowing water pushes the water wheel around, the parts connected to the axle will pull and push on the bellows alternately, delivering more air to the furnace for the purpose of casting iron.

The Nine Chapters on the Mathematical Art/《九章算术》, Fangcheng/方程 chapter. It’s a compilation of the work of many scholars from 10 th century BC until 2 nd century AD, and while the earliest authors are unknown, it has been edited and supplemented by known scholars during Western Han dynasty (also when the final version of this book was compiled), then commented on by scholars during Three Kingdoms period (Kingdom of Wei) and Tang dynasty. The final version contains 246 example problems and solutions that focus on practical applications, for example measuring land, surveying land, construction, trading, and distributing taxes. This focus on practicality is because it has been used as a textbook to train civil servants. Note that during Han dynasty, fangcheng means the method of solving systems of linear equations; today, fangcheng simply means equation. For anyone who wants to know a little more about this book and math in ancient China, here’s an article about it. (link goes to pdf)

Diagram of a circle in a right triangle (called “勾股容圆” in Chinese), from the book Ceyuan Haijing/《测圆海镜》 by Yuan-era mathematician Li Ye/李冶 (his name was originally Li Zhi/李治) in 1248.  Note that Pythagorean Theorem was known by the name Gougu Theorem/勾股定理 in ancient China, where gou/勾 and gu/股 mean the shorter and longer legs of the right triangle respectively, and the hypotenuse is named xian/弦 (unlike what the above linked article suggests, this naming has more to do with the ancient Chinese percussion instrument qing/磬, which is shaped similar to a right triangle).  Gougu Theorem was recorded in the ancient Chinese mathematical work Zhoubi Suanjing/《周髀算经》, and the name Gougu Theorem is still used in China today.
Tumblr media
Diagram of the proof for Gougu Theorem in Zhoubi Suanjing. The sentence on the left translates to "gou (shorter leg) squared and gu (longer leg) squared makes up xian (hypotenuse) squared", which is basically the equation a² + b² = c². Note that the character for "squared" here (mi/幂) means "power" today.

This is a diagram of Zhang Heng’s seismoscope, called houfeng didong yi/候风地动仪 (lit. “instrument that measures the winds and the movements of the earth”).  It was invented during Eastern Han dynasty, but no artifact of houfeng didong yi has been discovered yet, this is presumably due to constant wars at the end of Eastern Han dynasty.  All models and diagrams that exist right now are what historians and seismologists think it should look like based on descriptions from Eastern Han dynasty. This diagram is based on the most popular model by Wang Zhenduo that has an inverted column at the center, but this model has been widely criticized for its ability to actually detect earthquakes. A newer model that came out in 2005 with a swinging column pendulum in the center has shown the ability to detect earthquakes, but has yet to demonstrate ability to reliably detect the direction where the waves originate, and is also inconsistent with the descriptions recorded in ancient texts. What houfeng didong yi really looks like and how it really works remains a mystery.

Xin dynasty bronze calipers, the earliest sliding caliper found as of now (not the earliest caliper btw). This diagram is the line drawing of the actual artifact (right).

Ancient Chinese "Jacquard" loom (called 提花机 or simply 花机 in Chinese, lit. "raise pattern machine"), which first appeared no later than 1st century BC. The illustration here is from the Ming-era (1368 - 1644) encyclopedia Tiangong Kaiwu/《天工开物》. Basically it's a giant loom operated by two people, the person below is the weaver, and the person sitting atop is the one who controls which warp threads should be lifted at what time (all already determined at the designing stage before any weaving begins), which creates patterns woven into the fabric. Here is a video that briefly shows how this type of loom works (start from around 1:00). For Hanfu lovers, this is how zhuanghua/妆花 fabric used to be woven, and how traditional silk fabrics like yunjin/云锦 continue to be woven. Because it is so labor intensive, real jacquard silk brocade woven this way are extremely expensive, so the vast majority of zhuanghua hanfu on the market are made from machine woven synthetic materials.

Chinese purple is a synthetic pigment with the chemical formula BaCuSi2O6. There's also a Chinese blue pigment. If anyone is interested in the chemistry of these two compounds, here's a paper on the topic. (link goes to pdf)

A list of common colors used in Qin and Han dynasties and the pigments involved. White pigment comes from chalk, lead compounds, and powdered sea shells; green pigment comes from malachite mineral; blue pigment usually comes from azurite mineral; black comes from pine soot and graphite; red comes from cinnabar; ochre comes from hematite; and yellow comes from realgar and orpiment minerals.
Tumblr media
Also here are names of different colors and shades during Han dynasty. It's worth noting that qing/青 can mean green (ex: 青草, "green grass"), blue (ex: 青天, "blue sky"), any shade between green and blue, or even black (ex: 青丝, "black hair") in ancient Chinese depending on the context. Today 青 can mean green, blue, and everything in between.

Western Han-era bronze lamp shaped like a goose holding a fish in its beak. This lamp is interesting as the whole thing is hollow, so the smoke from the fire in the lamp (the fish shaped part) will go up into the neck of the goose, then go down into the body of the goose where there's water to catch the smoke, this way the smoke will not be released to the surrounding environment. There are also other lamps from around the same time designed like this, for example the famous gilt bronze lamp that's shaped like a kneeling person holding a lamp.

A list of canals that was dug during Warring States period, Qin dynasty, and pre-Emperor Wu of Han Han dynasty (475 - 141 BC). Their purposes vary from transportation to irrigation. The name of the first canal on the list, Hong Gou/鸿沟, has already become a word in Chinese language, a metaphor for a clear separation that cannot be crossed (ex: 不可逾越的鸿沟, meaning "a gulf that cannot be crossed").
Tumblr media
Han-era wooden boat. This boat is special in that its construction has clear inspirations from the ancient Romans, another indication of the amount of information exchange that took place along the Silk Road:
Tumblr media
A model that shows how the Great Wall was constructed in Qin dynasty. Laborers would use bamboo to construct a scaffold (bamboo scaffolding is still used in construction today btw, though it's being gradually phased out) so people and materials (stone bricks and dirt) can get up onto the wall. Then the dirt in the middle of the wall would be compressed into rammed earth, called hangtu/夯土. A layer of stone bricks may be added to the outside of the hangtu wall to protect it from the elements. This was also the method of construction for many city walls in ancient China.
Tumblr media
A list of the schools of thought that existed during Warring States period, their most influential figures, their scholars, and their most famous works. These include Confucianism (called Ru Jia/儒家 in Chinese; usually the suffix "家" at the end denotes a school of thought, not a religion; the suffix "教" is that one that denotes a religion), Daoism/道家, Legalism (Fa Jia/法家), Mohism/墨家, etc.
Tumblr media
The "Five Classics" (五经) in the "Four Books and Five Classics" (四书五经) associated with the Confucian tradition, they are Shijing/《诗经》 (Classic of Poetry), Yijing/《易经》 (also known as I Ching), Shangshu/《尚书》 (Classic of History), Liji/礼记》 (Book of Rites), and Chunqiu/《春秋》 (Spring and Autumn Annals). The "Four Books" (四书) are Daxue/《大学》 (Great Learning), Zhongyong/《中庸》 (Doctrine of the Mean), Lunyu/《论语》 (Analects), and Mengzi/《孟子》 (known as Mencius).
Tumblr media
And finally the souvenir shop! Here's a Chinese chess (xiangqi/象棋) set where the pieces are fashioned like Western chess, in that they actually look like the things they are supposed to represent, compared to traditional Chinese chess pieces where each one is just a round wooden piece with the Chinese character for the piece on top:
Tumblr media
A blind box set of small figurines that are supposed to mimic Shang and Zhou era animal-shaped bronze vessels. Fun fact, in Shang dynasty people revered owls, and there was a female general named Fu Hao/妇好 who was buried with an owl-shaped bronze vessel, so that's why this set has three different owls (top left, top right, and middle). I got one of these owls (I love birds so yay!)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And that concludes the museums I visited while in Xi'an!

The use of AI in Fanfictions - an essay I'm sure many people wrote before me
I've been thinking about this back and forth a lot lately and here's my two cents nobody asked for on the topic of AI in fanfiction.
Long text under the cut
I'll make a distinction here between using AI to enhance some of your creative fan writing and just prompting AI to write something for you en bloc, because in my opinion we are speaking of different things here. For the former there are some arguments I can make. For the record, I use claude.ai as I find it the most politely human sounding and a lot less inclined to come up with complete lies. (chatGPT I'm looking at you)
The thing I sporadically use it for is information gathering. Sporadically, as I quite enjoy reading through long Wikipedia articles about subjects I never dived into before, but sometimes I just need a two line summary that I'm struggling to find. Some of the random things I had to research for the current fic I'm working on:
- clubs/nightlife in the early 2000s in outer London/Reading
- parent-teacher meetings in Japan for 16 years old students
- popular drugs in Tokyo in the 2000s
- traditional musical instruments from Tibet
I've read through a bunch of blog posts, reddit posts (which I always find really draining), PDF reports, while I needed pretty much a 3 word answer on these. In a better late than never moment, I asked from AI as well, and decided to accept what it said as truth for the missing bits.
Then, for this same fic, I decided to write some song lyrics - and found that I really suck at it. In a pitch, I tried to get AI to write them for me - sadly they ended up even worse then my own ones, but I could use a few lines as inspiration at least.
So, I would say when you need a paragraph in a different style, let's say a news article, a diary entry, you can try to prompt it. I'd never use the text as it is, as AI writing is quite flavourless, missing the soul if you will, but it can help you through those bits that make you stuck for days at least.
As a non-native English speaker, I'd really love it to help with the language at times, but I don't see it fit for this, at least not at this stage. Maybe specific translation tools are better at this, never tried them for any creative purpose, but I'd only ever recommend them if you are confident in understanding what the returned text says. We are very far from the point where you can type in a whole story in your local language and trust AI to return the translation while keeping not just the meaning but the quality of your writing as well.
And this is, I think, the crucial failing point of AI in creative writing. A story isn't only the plot, isn't only the characterisation, or the dialogues, which you can prompt to a degree. It isn't even only the smut. (I don't know any AI that writes you explicit scenes, there might be some out there already.) So many times I've said I have great story ideas inside my mind, if only I could plug in an USB stick to download them, but this wouldn't work for other reasons than the obvious.
Anyone who tries to write down one of the many ideas in their mind will know that a written story isn't the same as the one the internal movie machine provided. There will be gaps and plot holes and stuff that just doesn't work when written down. There will be conversations that will fail on paper. There will be things you can just not make your characters do. Even moreso, a written story is also your choice of words, your pacing, your style. A good story will be reflecting you, or the parts of you that you decide to expose through writing.
And this is why I don't see AI's point in creating whole fanfictions. It will miss *you* from it, it will be nothing but templates and cliches put next to each other and sure, we have all seen movies and series which didn't do much else, but it isn't what we should aim for, is it? A creative process is sometimes painful, sometimes frustrating, but strangely is still a fulfilling thing. If someone wants to prompt AI for a fic for themselves, why not? I did, mostly to prove my point that it won't be good, and yes, it wasn't good. I actually had a good laugh as it was so cringe. Posting it isn't evil either, but I find it fully pointless. Why would I read anyone's prompted AI fic, when it takes me less than a minute to create a bad story for myself? As far as I can see you gain nothing but a few kudos and lots of hateful comments if you post an AI created fic, so unless you want interactions from others regardless if they are positive or negative, why would you do it?
Bottom line? I don't see harm in trying to use AI smartly for fanfictions, it is nothing but a tool after all, don't let the "intelligence" part mislead you. It's not. But let us not forget to cherish the human creativity, and appreciate the beauty in different styles and thought processes. Let's use fanfictions to learn English (or language of your choice) on a higher level. Make it a *good* story. Make it a well-written story. Create believable characterisation and dialogues. Write that sex scene.
One more thing: I'm talking about fanfictions only, where we are already playing with someone else's toys and can have a lot less claim about what's "ours". For an original piece of fiction, especially if you are one of those brave souls considering publishing something, the level of AI usage I'd find acceptable converges to 0.
To prove, or disprove my point, I also asked AI what it thinks of this.

However, in European history, as the classical languages of Greek and Latin gave way to the vernacular languages of Europe it was the active voice that was given more and more priority in how the world was talked about and thought about. The active voice is the grammatical voice that speaks as if an actor can act without being affected by the action, and can, if they wish, reverse the action. It is the voice that says that the drift is the end product of the driving wind, the cast the end product of the casting, the throw. This is the voice that laid the ground for the seemingly detached observer of modern science, the distanced actor of technology – and its passive twin our sense of the environment as mere resource or instrument (Romanyshyn 1989). Owen Barfield describes this as a process of ‘internalization’,‘the shifting of the centre of gravity of consciousness from the cosmos around him into the personal human being himself’ (Barfield 1954: 166-7).
Bronislaw Szerszynski in (PDF) Postprint version – to appear in Performance Research. Drift as a planetary phenomenon
I keep pointing to a Podcast discussion between author Sarah Jaffe and Kelly Hayes about how grief shapes our struggles because it really touched a nerve. We neglect grief at our peril. In their discussion Jaffe told about interviewing Namwali Serpell about Serpell's novel The Furrows in Bookforum, Mourning Routine. Serpell pointed to this essay by Bronislaw Szerszynski.
When I first opened the essay I didn't quite know what to do with it. I wondered what are Performanc Studies? I could tell there was a bunch of academic stuff that was going to take me some time to sort through, so I put it aside. When I finally got around to reading the essay I found it such an enjoyable and enlightening read. Of course, I did have to go look up stuff. Two links gleened from the effort to enjoy: I was pleased to discover a beautiful new translation of Johan Huizinga’s most well known book Autumntide of the Middle Ages. The edition is illustrated with 300 illustrations of works Huizinga references in the book. If you like books it's worthwile clicking on the link. The Wikipedia article on Owen Barfield was helpful to me as I hardly knew his work at all. The book referenced by Szerszynski was first publised in 1926.

The Age of the Soybean: An Environmental History of Soy During the Great Acceleration
Edited by Claiton Marcio da Silva & Claudio de Majo (2022, open access!)
The soybean is far more than just a versatile crop whose derivates serve the protein needs of a meatless diet. One of the world’s most important commodities, soy represents the embodiment of mechanised industrial agriculture and is one of the main actors behind the socioeconomic, political and ecological transformations of industrial farming in several world regions. Despite the crop’s potential as a cheap source of vegetal protein for human consumers, most industrial soybean production has fuelled the global meat industrial complex, as animal feed. Soybean is thus, paradoxically, still a relatively ‘invisible’ crop to the public at large, although its global yields continue to increase at stupendous rates, lining the pockets of agribusiness and to the detriment of traditional agriculture. The transnational socio-ecological and economic entanglements characterising this versatile legume’s global expansion have prompted scholarly attention as researchers around the world have begun to unveil the main historical drivers behind the rise of the soybean in the global food chain. This book aims to expand the analysis, offering the most significant effort so far at an environmental history of soybeans. Interrogating the socioeconomic and ecological transformations determined by (and determining) the rise of soy in international food chains during the Great Acceleration, the volume gathers contributions from an international cast of researchers, working in numerous geographical contexts, from Japan and China, to India, African nations, the Southern Cone of Latin America, Northern Europe and the United States. Soybean farming, breeding, processing and marketing have bound together the histories of these diverse regions and altered beyond recognition their ecological and socio-economic contexts.
Globalizing the Soybean: Fat, Feed, and Sometimes Food, c. 1900–1950 Ines Prodöhl (2023, PDF open access)
Ines Prodöhl’s Globalizing the Soybean: Fat, Feed, and Sometimes Food, c. 1900-1950 (Routledge, 2023) is a history of how, why, and where the soybean became a critical ingredient in industry and agriculture in the first half of the twentieth century. Focusing on Japanese-dominated Manchuria, Germany, and the United States, Prodöhl shows that the soybean was a serendipitous solution to numerous and varied crises from the beginning of the century into the post-WWII decades. This story of imperialism, globalization, and technology begins in northeast China, the world’s soy cultivation center until the 1940s. It takes us to Germany, the number one importer of soybeans in the interwar period, and illuminates the various ways in which soy was integrated into the economy especially after the end of WWI as both an invaluable oilseed for industry and a source of protein-rich fodder for agriculture. Finally, Prodöhl explores how the United States first adopted the soybean mostly as a solution to overtaxed soils. Mixing economic, ecological, political, and technological/scientific history with a keen sense of the materiality of soy as a global product, Globalizing the Soybean is an accessible and enlightening book that will appeal to multiple audiences.
The Government of Beans: Regulating Life in the Age of Monocrops
Kregg Hetherington (2020)
The Government of Beans is about the rough edges of environmental regulation, where tenuous state power and blunt governmental instruments encounter ecological destruction and social injustice. At the turn of the twenty-first century, Paraguay was undergoing dramatic economic, political, and environmental change due to a boom in the global demand for soybeans. Although the country's massive new soy monocrop brought wealth, it also brought deforestation, biodiversity loss, rising inequality, and violence. Kregg Hetherington traces well-meaning attempts by bureaucrats and activists to regulate the destructive force of monocrops that resulted in the discovery that the tools of modern government are at best inadequate to deal with the complex harms of modern agriculture and at worst exacerbate them. The book simultaneously tells a local story of people, plants, and government; a regional story of the rise and fall of Latin America's new left; and a story of the Anthropocene writ large, about the long-term, paradoxical consequences of destroying ecosystems in the name of human welfare.
The Story of Soy
Christine M. Du Bois (2018)
The humble soybean is the world’s most widely grown and most traded oilseed. And though found in everything from veggie burgers to cosmetics, breakfast cereals to plastics, soy is also a poorly understood crop often viewed in extreme terms—either as a superfood or a deadly poison. In this illuminating book, Christine M. Du Bois reveals soy’s hugely significant role in human history as she traces the story of soy from its domestication in ancient Asia to the promise and peril ascribed to it in the twenty-first century. Traveling across the globe and through millennia, The Story of Soy includes a cast of fascinating characters as vast as the soy fields themselves—entities who’ve applauded, experimented with, or despised soy. From Neolithic villagers to Buddhist missionaries, European colonialists, Japanese soldiers, and Nazi strategists; from George Washington Carver to Henry Ford, Monsanto, and Greenpeace; from landless peasants to petroleum refiners, Du Bois explores soy subjects as diverse as its impact on international conflicts, its role in large-scale meat production and disaster relief, its troubling ecological impacts, and the nutritional controversies swirling around soy today. She also describes its genetic modification, the scandals and pirates involved in the international trade in soybeans, and the potential of soy as an intriguing renewable fuel. Featuring compelling historical and contemporary photographs, The Story of Soy is a potent reminder never to underestimate the importance of even the most unprepossesing sprout.

Laparoscopic Insufflation Devices Market Outlook Size, Key Players Analysis, Business Growth, Regional Trends, Development Status (2021-2031)
The laparoscopic insufflation devices market size is expected to reach US$ 2,000.74 million by 2031 from US$ 1,109.27 million in 2024. The market is estimated to record a CAGR of 8.8% from 2025 to 2031.
Executive Summary and Global Market Analysis
The global laparoscopic insufflation devices market is witnessing a period of dynamic growth. This surge is predominantly fueled by the increasing volume of laparoscopic bariatric surgeries, continuous technological innovation in gas regulation systems, and a greater emphasis on ensuring patient comfort during procedures. These insufflation devices are absolutely vital for both establishing and maintaining the necessary working space within the body cavity (the abdomen, in the context of laparoscopic surgery) during a minimally invasive surgical approach. This is accomplished by pumping medical gas, normally CO₂, directly into the surgical site, which is indispensable for achieving clear visibility and providing access for surgical instruments. Insufflation devices are a prerequisite for every laparoscopic case, and their role is fundamentally important as nearly every minimally invasive procedure and process is reliant on an optimal insufflation process.

How to Write Excellent Research Proposals: A Step-by-Step Guide for College Students
A research proposal is not just a formality—it's your sales pitch to prove why your topic matters. On Desklib, there are 100+ research proposal examples for students to give you a spark of inspiration and get you writing.
What Is a Research Proposal?
A research proposal is a written document that describes what you're going to study, why it matters, and how you're going to do it. It's essentially your opportunity to show your reader—your professor, advisor, or funding agency-that—your research matters and is feasible.
Not only should a good proposal introduce the topic and state how you will address it, but it should also propose the reason you're doing the research and state how you will proceed. From defining your research question to describing tools and techniques you will employ, everything must be well defined and substantiated.
In most university or college environments, the proposal is the go-ahead—approved, now off you go to do your research.
Structure of a Research Proposal
Although the format might vary based on institutional needs, all research proposals follow a similar template. The seven major elements that constitute an excellent proposal are as follows:
Title
A few concise words that summarize the nature of your research question.
Abstract
A summary of your entire proposal—this is your key question, your methodology, and what you anticipate discovering.
Introduction
A good lead that establishes the foundation for your research. It provides background and indicates the primary question or issue.
Literature Review
A review of the appropriate research to date in a literature review section. This places your research in the broader scholarly debate.
Methods
An explicit plan of doing the research. This involves your population or sample of interest, data analysis process, data collection instruments, and any ethical issues.
Importance
This is where you explain why your research matters—how it contributes to knowledge, fills gaps, or offers an alternative view.
Budget
A rough estimate of all the resources you will need, like equipment, travel, or staff, to carry out your research.
Purpose of a Research Proposal
The most important aim of any research proposal is to convince the reader that your research matters and is possible. Whatever you are presenting to a journal editor, funding body, or academic supervisor, the aim is the same: to show that you have taken your research question seriously and have a clear plan.
A good proposal proves the excellence of your research design and your ability to execute it. It allows you to concentrate your research, anticipate difficulties, and stay on track in the research process.
Research proposals also have some particular functions:
Define the research purpose and goals
Your proposal should specify precisely what you are going to investigate and what you anticipate discovering.
Explain the importance of your research
Describe how your work will contribute to your field, fill a gap, or be of practical use.
Describe your approach and methodology
Explain exactly how you will gather and process your data in order that others may be able to estimate the reliability of your process.
Show that your plan will succeed
Provide proof that you can carry out the study within your ability, time, and resources.
Secure funding or academic clearance
If it's for applying for a grant, the proposal must justify the investment. If it's for coursework, it must be of academic quality.

Investing in the Sky: eVTOL Market Opportunities & Trends
eVTOL Aircraft Market Growth & Trends
The global electric Vertical Takeoff and Landing (eVTOL) aircraft market was valued at approximately USD 1.35 billion in 2023 and is projected to expand at a remarkable compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 54.9% from 2024 to 2030, according to industry research. This exponential growth is being fueled by multiple technological, regulatory, and societal factors that are reshaping the future of urban and regional mobility.
A major catalyst for market expansion is the rapid advancement in battery technologies, which has significantly enhanced the operational capabilities of eVTOL aircraft. With improvements leading to lighter, more powerful batteries that charge faster, these aircraft are now capable of flying longer distances with reduced downtimes. This development is crucial in making eVTOLs more viable for urban air mobility (UAM), enabling their application in areas such as air taxis, emergency services, and cargo delivery systems. As battery efficiency continues to evolve, the practicality and appeal of eVTOLs will only strengthen, opening new avenues for their deployment and increasing market demand.
In parallel, growing global awareness of environmental issues, coupled with proactive government policies aimed at curbing carbon emissions, is generating substantial interest in sustainable transportation alternatives. eVTOLs offer a cleaner, electric-powered solution that significantly reduces the dependence on conventional ground vehicles, many of which rely on fossil fuels. By facilitating emission-free short-distance air travel, eVTOLs are positioned as a core component of future eco-friendly urban transportation networks. The shift toward green mobility is attracting investments, encouraging research and development, and receiving regulatory support—factors that collectively contribute to the accelerating growth of the eVTOL market.
Another pivotal growth driver is the integration of autonomous technologies into eVTOL designs. Autonomous flight capabilities are being developed to increase operational safety, reduce reliance on human pilots, optimize flight paths, and ultimately lower operational costs. Ongoing progress in Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), sensor systems, and flight control algorithms is paving the way for the emergence of fully autonomous eVTOL services in the near future. The convergence of these technologies is expected to revolutionize the aviation industry by making aerial mobility more accessible, efficient, and economically viable.
The role of regulatory bodies is also instrumental in shaping the future of the eVTOL market. Agencies such as the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in the U.S. and the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) are actively working to establish regulatory frameworks, certification standards, and safety guidelines tailored specifically to eVTOL operations. Regulatory clarity is a critical enabler for commercial viability, as it builds public trust, ensures safety, and streamlines market entry. Additionally, government initiatives that support aviation innovation are helping create a conducive environment for eVTOL adoption across global markets.
The increasing urban population and escalating traffic congestion in metropolitan areas are further boosting interest in aerial mobility solutions. eVTOLs offer a compelling alternative to ground-based transport by bypassing road congestion, thus dramatically reducing commute times and enhancing urban dwellers' quality of life. As cities continue to grow, the need for efficient, time-saving, and scalable transportation options will intensify, further propelling the demand for eVTOL aircraft.
