it's my birthday, so as a hobbit present to you all I humbly offer this thing I wrote: a novel length (71k) original work, posted on ao3 because that's where my people are. It's a slow character driven contemporary fantasy about a software engineer's queer awakening, and it's also a retelling of the ballad Thomas the Rhymer. It's more Becky Chambers than Tamsyn Muir, but it does have a lovable dumbass protag falling in love with incomprehensibly ancient weirdos with mysterious agendas. I'm mortified to have ever written it so I promise I won't mention it again.

What do you think a Mechs version of Tam Lin would look like? Maybe nanobot-shapeshifting that gets hacked? 👀

OHHHHH i like this. I’m thinking that Tam Lin is the son of a wealthy family on the planet, and it’s common for wealthy people to get modified with nanobots that allow them to shape shift as a cosmetic/beauty thing. They have locks in them that mean the people w them stay in human forms, but otherwise have free reign of what they look like.

He falls in love with Janet, a woman from a wealthy family in a different city. They get together, choosing to move in together.

The thing is, he catches the eye of another woman, Titania, who is actually the one who developed the nanobots. She kidnaps him and brings him to a place called Carterhaugh, though nicknamed “the Fae Lands,” a closed city filled with the richest of the rich. Neither Tam Lin nor Janet’s families qualify for that, though they are very well-off. Because of this, even though Janet knew what happened, she couldn’t go to him.

10 years of mourning later, Janet is picking flowers at the edge of the forest that surrounds the city of Carterhaugh. She sees Tam Lin sitting beneath a tree, and they talk. He tells her that on Samhain, the only day of the year the city’s gates open for very long, there will be a procession of all the people of Carterhaugh. That would be her chance to steal him back. He’ll be in the third vehicle, a white hover bike. She’s to get him off of it and cover him in her cloak, which is infused with camouflage nanobots.

On the night of Samhain, Janet gets on her own hover bike, laser gun at her side, and rides. Covered by her cloak, no one notices her until she shoots a beam at the back motor of Tam Lin’s bike. He flies off of it, crumpling to the ground. Still alive, but a bit battered. She skids to a stop and cover him like he told her.

It’s too late. Titania, the Faerie Queen, saw them. She breaks the protective measures in Tam Lin’s nanobots and activates a virus she had put into them, just in case. He starts turning - a serpent, a bear, his cells rearranging. Janet holds him close, despite the fact he claws out her eyes and tears her skin.

Now, the ending can be one of two.

One option is the original happy ending. Janet keeps him close all night and, at the end, the virus tapers off and Tam Lin is free. They go home, and work together to get his nanobots out of Titania’s control and make new ones to fix Janet’s injuries (at least, to the best of their abilities).

The second is we could go with a standard mechanisms “no happy ending in sight for us” ending. Janet succumbs to her wounds. Tam Lin, no longer entirely human, attacks and kills Titania and the rest of the procession. The few who survive flee. some arrive at Carterhaugh and close the gates one last time. They will die there in their gilded prison, but at least they will not face the wrath of Mad Tam Lin. The rest flee to nearby cities and spend there last days in squalor. Tam Lin, his nanobots not only continuously changing his shape but also keeping him alive forever, now roams the forest of Carterhaugh forevermore.

I am a massive fan of Pen15, so this may be only slightly biased.

Maya Erskine is in fact a genius. Whenever she talks about her parents in any piece of media, I get misty-eyed.

This is a perfect romcom, but it isn’t perfectly formulaic like other romcoms. It is hurtful, yearning, aching, hot, sweet, with characters you can’t help but adore.

Oh my god, I LOVE when they put weird girls in rom coms. For fuck’s sake, weird girl representation in the romcom genre is few and far between. She makes the conversation far more real. And more heartbreaking at times?
