It wasn’t because she saw her brother in Warren—she was Warren. Reflecting on it, how difficult it is when we snap, our ill feelings just take over, and the events that come after that. Did she cause her brother’s death? Whatever is… it must’ve always felt for her, like she did.

I'm a Virgo (2023)

I have a hobby of watching mid-century American TV shows, and my current project right now is "The Waltons", which aired from 1972-1981. Set in the 1930s and 40s, it's a very Rockwellian picture of rural Virginia during the Great Depression and is regarded as an extremely family-friendly show (Amazon rates it for audiences 7 and up).

Like a lot of 70s television, and indeed episodic television in general, it's very much styled along "a lesson an episode"; each one has a moral to impart.

In the 5th season there's an episode called "The Fire Storm" in which the oldest Walton child, John Boy, starts up controversy in the community by printing excerpts of Hitler's "Mein Kampf" in his weekly paper. The episode culminates in the community attempting a book burning of all the German books in the library, including "Mein Kampf", and John Boy furiously stops them with this to say (emphasis mine):

"This is my fault. I started this whole thing with my newspaper, I know that. But you misunderstood me! I was trying to show you what people are capable of out of ignorance, and out of fear, and out of hatred!

Do you realize that this kind of thing is happening all over Germany? All over Germany! And right now Germany and Walton’s Mountain are not very far apart in my mind.

I read that a foreign tyrant was publishing his plans to take over the world, and was carrying out those plans; I thought you oughta have the opportunity to know about it, just like I’d take the opportunity to tell you if there was a blight that was threatening your crops or some kind of scandal that was threatening your government. That’s freedom, as far as I can see it. And if you choose not to know about it, that’s freedom too, but if you take a book, and if you burn this book then you can’t know about it! And you’ve had your freedom taken away from you, you understand me?

And if there’s anybody here who feels that this book is more dangerous in one piece than it is burned into ashes in that fire then I want you to come up here and I want you to take it out of my hand! I want you to throw it in the fire right now! Throw ‘em all in the fire!"

I just watched episode 7 of Under the Bridge and was so disgusted when Rebecca said that everyone loves Warren! Honestly, this episode almost made me cry at one point - just the extent to which Rebecca kept defending him and romanticizing him. It makes me sick that some people actually did that in real life (read that the real Rebecca wasn't like that though). But I'm glad that episode 7 made it very clear that she was acting ridiculous. I can't tell if she's changed her mind or not, though.

who is your favorite old AIO character? It can be anyone, from Lucy to Donna to Richard Maxwell!

Unquestionably Bernard Walton! Odyssey's resident window-washer, grouch, troll, storyteller, and hilariously reluctant cousin. He's just the best.

Of course, there's others I love too! Tom Riley was awesome (gosh, I'm missing his character just thinking about it). Edwin Blackgaard and Walter Shakespeare were great, too. And honestly, a number of the saga specific characters were really just amazing and I wish they became more regular parts of the cast, like Buck and Penny did after Green Ring.

My favourite kid character was probably a super obscure one, like Digger Digwillow or Irwin Springer. Lawrence was fun, though!

#151 Under the bridge (2023)

Rebecca Godfrey (Riley Keough) vuelve a casa para escribir sobre la adolescencia en su ciudad natal y como sobrevivir a la misma. Esto es justo cuando se comete el brutal asesinato de Reena Virk (Vritika Gupta), y la agente Cam Bentland (Lily Gladstone) amiga de la infancia de Rebecca, es la encargada de la investigación.

Reena Virk tiene 14 años, es de procedencia India y llegó junto a sus padres a Canadá con muchos sueños y esperanzas, pero, en 1997, y como siempre, el racismo no era justo y la adolescencia y un montón de niños enfermos de ira, no se lo pusieron fácil a Reena.

La joven había recibido bully toda su vida, sus compañeros le hacían la vida imposible, y casi nadie la conocía. Reena solo quería encajar, tener un sitio donde ir y estar con gente de su edad. Pero no tuvo la oportunidad, y cada vez que tenía la oportunidad de encajar se esforzaba al máximo, pero se encargaban de darle una de cal y otra de arena.

En algún momento conoció a Josephine Bell (Chloe Guidry), Dusty Pace (Aiyana Goodfellow) y Kelly Ellard (Izzy Gaspersz), y deseaba tanto encajar con ellas que no mostró que le dolía que se rieran de ella, que se metieran con ella, con su aspecto físico, que la llamaran peluda o gorda. Toda esa crueldad fue durante meses. Hasta que harta de toda esa situación, Reena le robó su agenda de contactos a Josephine Bell y llamó a todos y cada uno de ellos para decirles cosas horribles de Josephine justo como ellas hacía con ella.

Josephine, más conocida como Joe, se entera trama con su mejor amiga Kelly matar a Reena por difundir rumores sobre ella, y esta se muestra muy atraída ante la idea. Todas ellas estudiantes de 14 y 16 años.

Las cuatro chicas se conocieron en una casa de acogida, por los problemas familiares, en el caso de Reena sus padres eran muy estrictos y religiosos y ella ansiaba libertad, por lo que contó mentiras sobre su situación familiar. Por otro lado, Kelly tenía trato con sus padres, pero su comportamiento era muy conflictivo, Joe no tiene directamente trato con nadie de su familia, no es una niña deseada y su madre ansiaba deshacerse de ella, y por último, Dusty había tenido problemas con alcohol y drogas y, por extensión, con su familia.

Rebecca se centra en Joe para sacarle la máxima información posible respecto al crimen y es que Joe se cree parte de la mafia, ansia tener una vida apasionante y ser una gánster. Vivir de extorsionar, amenazar y matar gente, y Kelly encaja perfectamente con esa vida también. Esa es la actitud que muestran en el instituto y con sus amigos y, desde luego, con la gente que se relacionan. Así conocen a Warren (Javon Walton) un chico del que han echado de su casa, y no tiene donde ir.

Una noche engañan a Reena para quedar con ellas y con otro grupo de chicos, solo para que Joe y Kelly puedan vengarse de ella, y darle una paliza, donde participaron más de 20 personas. Entre todos ellos golpearon con puñetazos, patadas y golpes a Reena Virk, Warren participó sin conocer a Reena y sin tener nada en contra de ella.

Después de la primera paliza todos escapan, y a los minutos también lo hace Reena, con heridas, sangrando y arrastrándose, cruza el puente y nada se sabe más de ella. Días después encuentran su cadáver flotando en el río.

Para entonces, Rebecca siente una terrible compasión por Warren, al que cree inocente, y por el que siente una conexión debido a su dolor. Pese a que Cam le dice que no se fie de ninguno de ellos, esos adolescentes con vidas desestructuradas son incapaces de reconocerse a sí mismos en determinadas circunstancias.

Rebecca quiere ser justa con todos y comprensiva con los acusados, antes de tomar una decisión, creyendo que así se muestra imparcial, pero lo cierto es que solo deja una puerta abierta a las mentiras de Joe, Kelly, Dusty y Warren.

Lo cierto es que sin premeditación los adolescentes golpearon a Reena hasta hacerla trizas y mientras escapaba por el puente para poder volver a casa, Warren y Kelly la alcanzaron, con la excusa de querer que le pida perdón a Joe, pero lo cierto es que Kelly quiere acabar el trabajo, golpea de nuevo a Reena y la deja inconsciente, luego con la ayuda de Warren la arrastra hasta el agua para que muera ahogada, esto, deja la crueldad de Joe, quemándole con un cigarrillo entre los ojos a Reena, como mera anécdota, cuando no es más que una perspectiva más cercana de la crueldad de los jóvenes cuando saben que nadie está mirando y se pueden refugiar en el alcohol y las drogas para dar rienda suelta a sus instintos más oscuros.

Esta serie de televisión está basada en el crimen real del asesinato de Reena Virk, donde se sigue la línea narrativa muy de cerca aunque con mucha dramatización para poder justificar la serie.

Reena existió y fue víctima de sus bullys, la acorralaban, se metían con ella, la insultaban. Menos preciaban y humillaban por mera diversión, algunos creer que fue una cuestión racial y otros que simplemente la inseguridad y por todo el bullying recibido hizo de Reena la víctima perfecta.

La adolescente buscaba encajar, buscaba formar parte de su entorno más directo en el instituto y nadie puede culparla de ello, la soledad es dura, sobre todo en esa etapa, y Reena no era más que una cría.

Su familia era muy religiosa y severa, y buscaban que Reena se adaptara sin perder sus costumbres, pero ella estaba lejos de querer rezar o bendecir la mesa. Y en esa etapa adolescente, donde no encontraba consuelo en casa, lo intentó por activa y por pasiva fuera de la misma. Ella creyó que las otras chicas la acabarían aceptando, dejaría que fuera de fiesta con ellas, que formara parte. Pero lo cierto es que jugaban con ella y sus sentimientos, haciéndola creer que era como ellas para dos minutos después humillarla y vejarla, pero Reena volvía a darse otro cabezazo contra la pared de querer encajar.

Kelly se excusó en que se sentía familia de Joe y que Reena tenía que pagar esa falta de respeto, pero admitió su participación casi 20 años después, buscando acceder al tercer grado después de haber tenido 2 hijos en prisión. Todo el tiempo anterior a esto, negó su participación, incluso cuando Warren la señaló en el juicio.

Warren recibió la visita de los padres de Reena y la comprensión y el perdón de los mismos para poder avanzar en su duelo, cosa que Warren agradeció y en el juicio lo contó todo. Como hubo una segunda paliza sobre Reena en la que participaron él y Kelly, que ella la golpeó brutalmente y él no hizo nada y que después la ayudó a trasladar el cuerpo al agua para que se ahogara, todo esto sin conocer absolutamente de nada a la joven.

Los Virks dedicaron la memoria de su hija y sus esfuerzos a luchar contra el bullying en los institutos y colegios, y a concienciar a los jóvenes.

El libro de Rebecca fue real y en él fue amable con Warren, intentando dar otra visión de él que la que pretendía dar la televisión.

Lo que me resulta más llamativo de esta historia es que Rebecca puede sentir empatía por Warren, pero no por Joe, Dusty o Kelly, que también estaban pasando por cosas difíciles en casa. Puede que Joe y Kelly fueran unas mafiosas prepotentes, pero Dusty se mostró arrepentida desde el inicio por haber traicionado a su amiga para encajar en un grupo.

AiO Thought of the Week

Age is truly just a foreign concept in Odyssey and there are no true answers but here are my headcannons:

Katrina is older than Eugene from somewhere to a few months upto a year and a half.

Eugene was 17-18 when he was hired at Whit’s End but is widely assumed to be older because of his voice and academic level but he 100% looked his age.

The writers said on the official pod Jay's age is a dependent variable. So I think when Jay is hanging out with Zoey, Buddy, or any of the other middle schoolers he is 13/14. With the rare exception, Jay is otherwise 17 however his appearance is still skued toward the 13/14.(this might be because of his height but that's a different headcannon) These numbers only apply to album 58 and beyond before that he is younger and is more consistent in age.

Jason is in his 40s.

Connie still hasn't quite reached her 30s but is almost there. I know she's still earning her degree but if Eugene is any indication 10yrs is not an unreasonable amount of time for a degree from CCCC. Plus I think she's swapped majors like 3 times.

Eugene and Katrina are very early 30s

Whit despite being born in 1925/26 is an ageless being of perpetual Eldersness and is therefore older than anyone in a given room and yet, still possess the ability to out-manuver the authorities both physically and mentally

Jack and Wilson are also ageless beings but not on Whit's level.

Tom lived just out of town and so aged normally, I guess. I have no evidence but I feel like he was born in 1931.

Bernard despite being one of the original "old men that make up Connie’s friend group" is good decade or so younger than Tom and Whit, still way older than Connie though.

Hulu's miniseries adaptation of novelist Rebecca Godfrey's non-fiction true crime book chronicling the 1997 beating death of fourteen-year-old Indo-Canadian teenager Reena Virk in Saanich conjures up bad memories of moral panic from British Columbians who remember the lurid details of the shocking murder. While both trying to maintain fidelity to the real-life tragedy, the series plays with the timelines, characters, and chronology to make the events more dramatic and neat despite the inexplicable circumstances. Godrey as a character (played by Riley Keough) plays a key role in understanding the young perpetrators' motives while looping in the the police investigation led by Lily Gladstone as a composite Indigenous cop character.
