I love Connie Willis. I think it is a legitimate failure of the science fiction community because the only people I ever see talking about her work are me. She has eleven Hugo Awards!

I do think her most significant long works were in the '90s and the kind of science fiction she writes was not as embraced as science fiction as it would be now. I feel like there's been some much needed erosion of drawing firm lines between hard science fiction and soft science fiction and the idea that hard science fiction is /real/ science fiction have you read her short 1995 novel "Remake" about a future Hollywood dystopia where everything is just remakes of previously successful works starring digital versions of long dead actors that various production companies own the rights to and the protagonist is a disillusioned Hollywood cog whose job is finding sets and props in previous movies that can be digitally copied into the new version of movies so nothing new or real has to be made but I wasn't reading "Remake" I was reading Willis' new novel, "The Road to Roswell".

There are two kinds of Willis novels: the serious ones and the romantic comedy non-science fiction genre pastiches but make it science fiction. Willis loves a screwball comedy and doesn't see why she can't have that but also aliens are there or it's time travel and I love that.

"The Road to Roswell" is an alien abduction story that's also a road novel traveling around Nevada and New Mexico and the special kind of Americana that's grown around UFO sightings and alien conspiracies. Francie is reluctantly in Roswell on the Fourth of July weekend to be the maid of honour in her best friend's latest attempt at a wedding that Francie is determined to talk her out of (one previously referenced fiancé was a breatharian), when, at tentacle-point, she is kidnapped by an alien who looks like a tumbleweed. The alien wants something. Or to go somewhere. And Francie is going to be it's wheelman. As Francie tries to appease the alien and get back to Roswell in time to stop her friend's wedding, the group of abductees becomes bigger, eventually acquiring a conspiracy theorist, a man selling alien abduction insurance packages, a casino loving senior citizen, and a cowboy.

It's just charming. It's silly and light and easy to read and the affection that develops between the alien and its abductees, particularly Francie, as they grow from trying to figure out how to escape to how to communicate with it to how to help it achieve it's goal (but also still get back to Roswell to stop Francie's friend from marrying a man who's arranged for them to get married in a museum recreation of the alien autopsy video) holds everything together.

I never regret the time I spend with something Connie Willis' has written.

So did anyone else watch Roswell, NM finale? I was a bit disappointed in the Liz/Max ending. Did no one think of sending Liz to Oasis? She is a scientist and even if she somewhat forgetful, who wouldn't want to go to an alien world? Also they may need what's left of her ingenuity to help stop the imminent world apocalypse.

And before anyone adds, "But what about all the other stuff like, Can she survive there or is the food edible or the water potable?" Obviously the alien race that inhabits Oasis is carbon based and close enough to humanity that they were able to cross-breed(in many-many instances!).

My other comment on the final(although it happened previously too) was the scenes with Liz and Sheri Appleby are disconcerting. They hurt my head.

Overall, the series was good. Some characters had better development then the original. I understand why they made all the choices they made and all the changes from the original as well. I liked the original but I liked this version as well. I think some things were thrown in at the end that either weren't well developed or added to help round into the falling action and trigger the denouement. As in the original, the series was not on long enough to fully develop the plot. It is a shame this happens so often.

what is roswell about? i've never seen anyone else post about it but you've got me intrigued

Ooh, join us! Roswell New Mexico has 4 seasons (2019-2022) with 13ish eps each; it was on the CW and is available on Netflix. (It’s a remake of a 90s or early 00s show just called Roswell. That one’s on Hulu and I’ve only seen a few episodes.) Overall, it’s about aliens living in Roswell and their human friends/love interests, plus a few alien-related mysteries. Most of my summary will be about season one and I’ll leave the rest for you to see for yourself.

Liz (human) comes back to Roswell ten years after high school, discovers her high school crush is an alien, and then finds out her sister had been killed by aliens. This and other developments lead to their whole social circle getting in on the secret and there’s a bunch of love triangles.

If I knew who you were, dear anon, I’d tailor this to what fandoms we’ve already got in common but to cover some of the likely options and their high level comparisons: If you like Leverage, this has found family and the love triangles can easily be shipped as throuples/polycules. If you like The Magicians then same as leverage plus canon queer characters and magic(technically science) powers. If you like Supernatural, there can be a lot of overlap between malex and destiel (for better and worse). If you’re still here from my Torchwood days, again queer characters with messy relationships and a lot of snark.

Let’s introduce some of the characters!

In the Pod Squad (the three main aliens), we’ve got Isobel, Max, and Michael (left to right in gif). Max and Isobel were adopted together and grew up as the Evans twins while Michael was a foster kid but all three are inseparable. Isobel starts off the series as someone whose identity is mainly focused on wife/sister/volunteer but breaks down her walls and grows into a total badass. Often portrayed in fanon as “the woman with the brain cell” for better or worse. Max is a writer-turned-cop and total romantic who has been pining for his high school crush (Liz) for over a decade and risks his family secret in order to save her and struggles with choosing between her safety and his family’s. Michael is an angsty bisexual mechanic with a troubled past and became many people’s blorbo on sight. He too has a high school sweetheart (Alex) who he’s never gotten over but grows enough to find healthy relationships and let people in. They all have various powers including telekinesis, healing, and mind control/influencing.

And now for Team Human! Liz is a scientist who left town after graduation because her sister died from (apparently) drunk driving and gets shot an hour after she returns. The lack of being dead causes her to investigate/confront her crush (Max) and learns about aliens, leading to the realization that her sister was killed by an alien and the crash was a coverup. The first person who she brings in is her ex-boyfriend, Kyle, a jock-turned-surgeon with a strong moral compass who tries to rein in the mad scientist tendencies of his ex-girlfriend (who he still has feelings for).

Next in on the whole alien thing is Alex, a gay emo who had a secret thing with Michael in high school before leaving to join the Air Force. He’s back in town (minus a leg) and has his plate full with finding out that his abusive homophobic dad runs a secret military team hunting aliens and oh hey, his high school boyfriend turns out to be an alien! He’s best friends with Maria, a psychic who runs the local bar. Besides bartending, she splits her time between fortune telling as a side hustle, encouraging Alex about his old flame (secretly Michael), and nursing a crush on the local barfly/mechanic (also Michael).

(Fun fact: I have no idea how to use tumblr’s gif search so both of the human gifs were found through their respective throuple ship tags.)

There are plenty of ships around depending on your preference but the most prevalent is malex (Michael/Alex), it’s nearly inescapable. Echo is Max/Liz and generally well liked. Isobel starts off with a husband (Noah) but also gets other love interests. The two main throuples are malexa (malex plus Maria) and kaliz (echo plus Kyle).

Hey guys that class blog is back with another url, it's alienidentities-s23a and alienidentities-s23b this semester, if you don't want your posts used go block em. I'm also submitting a harassment report to Tumblr about how they are circumventing the block button this way, if you would like to link to this post since there's a 350 character limit on the explanation, feel free.

There is a class that remakes a blog every semester and proceeds to instruct their students to find "examples" of misogynoir in Roswell, New Mexico fandom posts. The users they find are not asked if they want to participate or given a chance to discuss it, and are repeatedly accused of racism and sexism for simply not liking one of the characters (usually NOT for reasons regarding race or gender! They seem to specifically go through the anti tag to find the posts). Though we spread the blog name to block it so we don't get involved against our will, they remake the blog each semester, circumventing the blocks. These accusations are upsetting, and though our posts are public, it's not nice to see this crap in our notifications, and we would rather not deal with it.

2022: The tragic murder of Bruce's parents marks a pivotal moment in his life, planting the seed of what would become Batman. Bruce is sent to live with is older sister, Rebecca, in Appleton. It is here where he meets Clark.

2023: The Wars in Israel and Ukraine embolden radicals in Gavonia, sparking concerns over WWIII.

2027: Bruce, having grown restless, begins his journey to become Batman, although he does not yet know it. He forfeits his share of the Wayne fortune, a move that strains his relationship with Rebecca.

2028: Harvey Kent decides to pursue law after his aunt and uncle, Eben and Sarah Kent are murdered in a store robbery. Their funeral is attended by Clark, Harvey, and Rebecca, but not Bruce, straining his relationship with his sister even further.

2030: Bruce and Diana cross paths in Brussels. Neither is aware of the significance of this encounter.

2031: Clark discovers that he is getting stronger, strong enough to rip a car door off it's hinges.

2035: Bruce returns from Europe and Asia, equipped with skills and resources to establish Gotham Industries. Rebecca publicly disowns her brother.

2036: The simmering tensions in Gavonia explode into open conflict, drawing Albert Pratt into military service. Albert enlists with the 17th Cavalry Regiment as a tank driver.

2038: Superman starts his career in Metropolis, on the advice of his cousin Harvey and Bruce.

2039: Bruce Wayne adopts the mantle of Batman, starting his crusade against crime in Gotham. Only Clark and Harvey know his secret identity.
