Here’s Why Everyone Is Talking About A Pirate Drama That Ended In 2017
Black Sails has been described as Game of Thrones with pirates
If Black Sails kicked off in 2020 instead of 2014, it certainly would have thrown fuel on the raging fire that was TikTok’s sea shanty obsession. The reality is that this TV series aired on Starz from 2014 for four seasons, coming to a close in 2017. So why is everyone talking about it now, a decade after it began?
Black Sails is coming to Netflix very soon, triggering its fans to emerge from the woodwork and promote the show online. ‘I am SO excited for people who’ll be watching this show for the first time,’ one user wrote, with many others recommending the series to fans of Game of Thrones. With House of the Dragon still a few months away, here’s why you should tune into Black Sails this month.
Tumblr media
New To Netflix: Black Sails
What Is Black Sails About?
Black Sails transports us back to 1715 – aka the Golden Age of Piracy. Set in New Providence, an island in the Bahamas, we meet the feared Captain Flint (Toby Stephens) who brings a new younger crew member into the fold (‘Long’ John Silver, played by Luke Arnold) as his crew continues to fight for survival and negotiate their space on the island.
Is Black Sails Based On A Book?
Black Sails was written as a prequel to Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic novel, Treasure Island (1883).
Tumblr media
Is It Based On A True Story?
While Black Sails isn’t based on a true story, it does trace real events. The first season focuses on the hunt for the Spanish treasure galleon Urca de Lima, a real ship that sank in 1715 near Fort Pierce in Florida (where it still lies). Season two traces the fallout of Urca de Lima’s treasure being stranded in Florida, strictly guarded by Spanish soldiers while pirates prowl the shores. The subsequent third and fourth seasons then look at the war for the control of New Providence between the pirates and the British Empire – a la Pirates of the Caribbean.
Likewise, some of the characters are based on real people. Real pirates fictionalised in the show include:
Blackbeard (Ray Stevenson)
Anne Bonny (Clara Paget)
Benjamin Hornigold (Hakeem Kae-Kazim)
Jack Rackham (Toby Schmitz)
Charles Vane (Zach McGowan)
Ned Low (Tadhg Murphy)
Israel Hands (David Wilmot)
Meanwhile, Captain Woodes Rogers (Luke Roberts) – who represents the British Empire in seasons three and four – is based on a real English sea captain and slave trader, and subsequently the first Royal Governor of the Bahamas.
Tumblr media
Was Captain Flint A Real Pirate?
Captain Flint is a fictional character who was first created by Robert Louis Stevenson in Treasure Island. He has since appeared in multiple works of fiction, including A. D. Howden Smith’s Porto Bello Gold (1924), John Drake’s Flint and Silver (2008), Pieces of Eight (2009) and Skull and Bones (2010), and J. M. Barrie’s Peter and Wendy (1904).
Where Was Black Sails Filmed?
Black Sails was filmed in Cape Town, South Africa, mainly inside at Cape Town Film Studio. Because the real city is so different today than it was in the 1700s, Nassau – the capital of the Bahamas, located on New Providence island – was built from scratch in a studio over a period of four months, as were two large water tanks to house the series’ two ships. Some scenes were filmed outside in and around Cape Town when new terrain was required, but most of the series was filmed on set.
Tumblr media
The Cast
The cast of Black Sails is incredibly large, but key characters to know include:
Toby Stephens as James McGraw/Captain Flint
Hannah New as Eleanor Guthrie
Luke Arnold as ‘Long’ John Silver
Jessica Parker Kennedy as Max
Tom Hopper as William ‘Billy Bones’ Manderly
Zach McGowan as Charles Vane
Toby Schmitz as Jack Rackham
Clara Paget as Anne Bonny
Mark Ryan as Hal Gates
Hakeem Kae-Kazim as Mr. Scott
Sean Cameron Michael as Richard Guthrie
Louise Barnes as Miranda Hamilton/Barlow
Rupert Penry-Jones as Thomas Hamilton
Luke Roberts as Woodes Rogers
Ray Stevenson as Edward Teach
David Wilmot as Israel Hands
Harriet Walter as Marion Guthrie

✨🏴‍☠️OC Questionnaire Mega Tag 🏴‍☠️✨
Thank you so so much for all these OC Questionnaire Tags:
@tragedycoded here, @wyked-ao3 here and here, @jev-urisk here, @illarian-rambling here,
@oliolioxenfreewrites here, @drchenquill here, @pluppsauthor here, and @saturnine-saturneight here. Thank you everyone who has tagged me, and even if I don’t see your tag just know that I appreciate you a lot! (I found out that Tumblr doesn’t catch all the times I’m mentioned either. Feel free to DM me if you wanna chat or get added to my writing list! ✨)
Allllright let’s get started on these….who should I—
Tumblr media
….Oh.
Cheers, mate! 🍻
Five Things that make you happy?
Benjamin, Rum, my ship, my mates, and blasting the smug grin off the faces of royals :)
If you could save just one other person who would it be?
Take one guess, mate.
Tell us one of your funniest jokes.
There once was a lad whose nose flew off from a point-blank shot. What did he say? “Tell us one of your funniest jokes.” No? Not laughing? Oh darn, I thought that was quite the knee slapper there. :)
Where would you like to visit?
Around the Caribbean Isles with my husband and crew. The waters should be good this time of year…
When do you usually go to sleep?
Well, depends….usually after Benji and I—
Benjamin: —STOP. 😡
Are you a jealous person?
Absolutely.
Have you committed a crime?
….Nah. ;)
Do you have a chore you absolutely hate?
Usually it’s the mates that do those, but cleaning the heads has never been a favorable chore for any of them.
Benjamin:…Not at all. 😑
Tell me an embarrassing childhood story.
I was spending a night in the slammer after Officer Ralph caught me pickpocketing. I tried using the butter from my bread at dinner to slip through the bars, and wound up getting stuck. Officer Ralph was none too pleased about that one, as he had to get out the hacksaw on the iron bars to free me.
Are you a good person?
I’m a pirate. Are pirates known to be good people?
Benjamin: You’re a pirate with a heart of gold, Peter.
Oh love, you’re gonna make me blush. I’ll remember that line next time I’ve pissed you off enough~
What's the worst thing you've ever done? Do you regret it?
…..Oh Gods. I don’t think I want to go there…
Benjamin: …It’s fine, Peter—
—it’s not. Back on Bloodwater Bay, I….I still wake in cold sweats to that scream.
Benjamin: It had to be done. I realize it now. You saved me….
….I may have saved you, but I’m no hero for that.
What's the quickest way to make you laugh?
Insulting parliament. Or robbing them blind.
What is your favorite song right now?
“The Wellerman” is right fun, it is. Never fails to make me break out in a jig with the mates.
Do you sometimes wish to be someone else?
Mmmmmmnope. Can’t say I do.
Do you push forward or take time to rest?
I’d take time in the islands to let my mates rest, but if I let my guard down for even a second it could spell disaster. I remain vigilant, even in slumber.
What is your favorite drink?
Ron de Barbados. A gorgeous, rich rum with earthy flavors and hints of vanilla. A kick of cinnamon spice, and a dash of hazelnut that tickles the tongue. A bottles worth about twenty grand, but you’d be a fool to think I’d purchase a bottle to enjoy its contents :)
If you had to pick an item of clothing or an accessory to wear for the rest of your life, what would it be?
It’d have to be my father’s tricorn. I’m honored to continue his legacy.
If you were forced to forget one memory, what would you choose?
Remember that thing I regret? On Bloodwater Bay? If I could erase that from my mind, I’d do so in a heartbeat. The day I nearly lost my husband is a day that still rests as a deep scar stitched across my chest, and perched there is the little red bird that I must protect at all costs.
What is a positive thing your worst enemy would say about you?
That I have guts. And I’m not afraid to spill them.
Thank you, Peter. 🏴‍☠️💛✨
Leaving this as an +open tag for anyone who wishes to join 💛✨

28 Asks! :DD Thank you!! :}} 🛒
Tumblr media
@raven-bearden-the-interviewer42
She met Seafoam when she rescued his ship from a great storm out at sea. :00
She brought the ship to safety and the next morning Seafoam crawls out into the deck and pulls himself over the railing to look around. All bruised and cracked from being thrown about the ship all night <XDD
That's when their eyes meet.. she tells Seafoam the story of how she saved his ship. And Seafoam is endlessly grateful! He was so kind and genuine.. 💞
Tumblr media
@starz-nova
XDD Thank you!! :DD I'm glad you like it! :}}
Tumblr media
@holly-opal (Link in ask)
I have not, but I know of it! :00 A friend of mine loves it and has recommended it to me. I've always considered reading it but never got around to it <XDD
Tumblr media
A lot of people commented that he looks a lot like Davy Jones from Pirates of the Caribbean, so I imagine yes! <XDD
Tumblr media
He might be happy to find someone that looks similar to him! :DD Though he probably wouldn't approach her.
If he saw someone like that, it'd be on shore. And if he's on shore? He's with his crew. Which means he's got a lot of people too keep track of and protect- he has no time to get distracted by interesting ladies! XDD
Tumblr media
@sussyhahag
Man I've put one some weight-- XDD
But thank you! I'm sure Grim and "Gengar me" would be great friends :}}}
Tumblr media
@beryl-shade
I could! :DD Maybe he'd be another pirate, they could call him "Tack" for short! :}}
Tumblr media
While I imagine she'd love to help out in that way, I imagine Seafoam tends to his own laundry XD
Tumblr media Tumblr media
@neo-metalscottic (Gerald's one year in question)
Thank you so much!! :DD The other comic is almost done and I'm hoping to post it soon! I've just had a few rough days with my health so Its not coming out as fast as I'd hope.. 😅 That, and I've been a bit mentally preoccupied daydreaming about web comic ideas.. 😞
As for Morton, I think his skin color will be a simple case of melanism! Nothing too crazy or magical there! <XDD As for his name and how he talks, I think its a reasonable idea that he would be named after a previous king! :0 Perhaps a previous king who had melanism as well..? 👀 Who knows XD
Though with his voice, I cant imagine him talking all "hulk" like. Since he's a part of the royal family he would have access to only the best education and speech therapy (if needed-). So the likelihood of any of the Koopalings having speech problems or talking "hulk" like would be low 😅 though that's not to say that out of all his siblings, he leans towards that type of speech the most! :00
As for Kammy and Kamek, she's not nearly as old as him. I was thinking Kamek is hundreds of years old, while Kammy is the Koopa equivalent of like... 60-70? She was brought into the koopa palace to be a nanny/maid. Her power is different from Kamek's, though I haven't figured out all the specifics yet.. I guess it can be said that when it comes to magic, they both studied and mastered different things.
Now if she ever faced Kamek in combat? He would flatten her. There is no Magikoopa alive today that can compare to Kamek's power..
...Doesn't mean she's afraid to get on his nerves though XDD She loves to mess with him, knowing that he's not allowed to hurt her.🤪
And lastly, its interesting to hear about the Vehicons getting some more originality! :00 My favorite out of those 3 would have to be the red one :}}
Tumblr media
AWE! Thank you so much!! :DD I'm honored!! :}}}
Tumblr media
@unicornfpotatoesdir
Nah, he's always gonna be littol! XDD And thank you!! :}}
Tumblr media
@milk-powrit
My first instinct was no.. since Jangles is like 2.5-3 feet tall and I always imagined sans to be 4.5-5 feet tall. But google says sans 2 feet tall??? XDD If we're going by Googles standards then yeah Jangles is taller- but my heart dont want to believe he's that short 🤣💀
As for the 20k post, Jangles wasn't holding anything other than Gerald.. so I assume you meant this post..? <:0 If so, its a granola bar! Its been most if my diet recently so I imagine I had a few extra lying around for Jangles <XDD
Tumblr media
@snailfen
So far I really like it!! :DD Better than Sword and Shield imo that's for sure <XDD
Tumblr media
I do not. <:/ But you can find all my Pokémon stuff under #pokemon scarlet and violet or #pokemon in my blogs search bar! <:D
Tumblr media
@lathan-chillyfilm
Funky lookin guy, I like him! XDD
Tumblr media
@tallchest13-blog
*Cici tugs at my arm
"......so you gonna drink that-" XDD Thank you!
Tumblr media
Thank you so much!! :DD I've got my hopes back up recently, hoping I'm over all this soon! :}} 🤞🤞
Tumblr media
@yourstrulylightstar283
Awe, thank you!! :}}}
Tumblr media
Oh yeah, after the wars all said and done? I'm sure he's pull back on that extreme and get some repairs done 🥺
Tumblr media
@mimiocto
You know to be honest, Grim is very dangerous becuase his brother is a Sylveon. XDD If I remember correctly, V is higher level than Grim in the game. Dragon types better watch out! XDD
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Oh hey! I've seen that guy around! I used to think he was Shockwave <XDD And he appears to be an Autobot?? With how Chaotic he is in fanart I thought he was a Decepticon-💀
But anyways- yes! With the fanart I've seen of him, I think him and Bash would be great friends XDD
Tumblr media
@artblock200322022
Thank you! I'm glad you liked those comics! :DD
Though at the moment, I don't have plans to jump back into that fandom anytime soon. <:/ I've have some uncomfortable experiences with the Octonauts fandom recently so I'm taking a bit of a break for now-
Tumblr media
@bee-the-inevitable-death
I don't see a reason to go through the effort to maintain an account on another website. <:0 I have all my inside jokes, my follower celebrations and all my followers right here in one place! Its much nicer :}
Tumblr media
Awe! Thank you so much!! :DDD I'm glad :}}}}
Tumblr media
@pink088
Nah its fiiiiine dw! As long as I have the bandages on the blood will stay in my hands surly :}} but thank you for the tea! :D
Tumblr media
(Referencing this post)
XDD Are we sure it wasn't [M]ango?
Tumblr media
Daaannngg.... Homestuck is way bigger than I thought-

A Merchant Sailor
Pirates of the Caribbean : Fic
Will Turner x Reader
Word Count: 3061
Warnings: Swarthy pirates fighting each other... Will being lied to... Will also being a sweetheart
Request: “This is me absolutely begging and foaming at the mouth for you to write a Will Turner x reader. I’m fine with fluff or smut lmao. I have a couple ideas if you also want to write multiple (or blend them into 1), you totally don’t have to though. Being Jacks sister but also constantly making berth at Port Royale when you were younger, results in a close friendship between you and a certain Mr. Will Turner. The killer is, you always told Will your brother was a merchant and that you would accompany him on his trips. In reality, you were always off doing pirate things with Jack. Consequently, the day Jack broke into Mr. Brown’s smithery, you later arrived with Will. This resulted in a 2 on 1 fight (or maybe not) with a lot of confused looks being shared between Jack and yourself. Plus Will defending your honor” @gingerdissapointment
A/N: Pretending to be a merchant, you befriend Will Turner as you keep your pirating a secret, until your brother forces you to reveal the truth
Tumblr media
Her sword clashed terribly with the swarthy pirates of the East Atlantic, fighting over hidden treasure beneath the sandy shores of a neutral island. She kicked up the dry sand, silencing the battle cry of the enemy.
He spit and scratched at his eyes as (Y/N) jabbed the sword into his stomach, shoving him aside. Whipping around the beach, Jack pranced away from a group of opposing pirates. She rolled her eyes at his wailing.
“For the love…” she ran after her brother, realizing that with the crew winning the battle, the other pirates were running for Jack. In his hands lay the key to the gold.
She waved off Cotton’s parrot and threw a dagger at Marty, the blade sticking into the sand, to give him a chance to cut the ropes around his wrists. Ahead was Jack and a quartet of pirates splashing along the shore.
The erratic steps of their captain sent seawater cascading onto his pursuers. The noise was enough cover for (Y/N) to pull another dagger from her many pockets and throw it at the furthest pirate. It sunk into the back of the assailants neck, sending him splashing into the sandy water.
The remaining three didn’t notice the bigger splash as they continued their cries of pursuit. (Y/N) was gaining on them, searching for another object to throw at them, silently thanking her brother for his distracting, wild methods of escape.
She spotted a mound of rock creeping out of the ocean and as they neared it, she grasped a pockmarked rock from the thick, muddy sand. Grunting from the momentum, she swung her arm wide and launched the weathered stone at the next pirate. She successfully cracked the top of his skull, forcing him to fall froward into the sea and salt.
The thunk of his unconscious body alerted his crewmate, a bare chested man with sunburnt skin. He seemed momentarily confused to see a much younger girl running at him.
It was enough of a distraction that he didn’t react to the elbow she rammed into him. With the speed of her steps it was the right amount of force to throw him from his feet. She slashed her sword across his legs as she tumbled forward, hopefully keeping him incapacitated and unable to follow further.
Adrenaline coursed past the burning of her muscles as she screamed at her brother, “I swear to God you will be carrying me back to the ship after I save your pitchy drunken arse!”
She reached the last assailant, tackling him into the salty shore. Her cry of accusation spoke through Jack’s panic, making him peek behind his shoulder and then stop altogether, completely perplexed as to why all four pirates chasing him just moments before were all in the seawater.
But a second longer he realized it was his little sister rolling around with the final pirate, splashing wet sand and salty water all around them.
“Oh,” Jack gasped, winded from his erratic run, “The cursed stowaway decides to be helpful.”
“Bastard,” she growled, finally pummeling the hilt of her sword against the pirates temple. “I was never a stowaway.”
Jack made a disgusted face as the pirate’s flailing limbs stilled against the shore. “You disturb me.”
“Likewise,” she breathed heavy, rising to her feet completely soaked and flecked with sand. “Do you run like that on purpose?”
“I have no idea what you mean.” He pushed past her, extracting the old rusty key needed for the hidden treasure of the island.
She wobbled on her shaky legs, “You look like you’re running on hot coals, prancing on your tiptoes like that.”
They followed their footsteps quickly being washed away by the frothy waves. They passed over the rocky pockmarked mound and after pausing in her bickering with her brother, found something half submerged in the water.
Saltwater seeping into her boots, she crouched and extracted a massive opalescent seashell. It glimmered in a rainbow of colors with the sunlight warming the face of it. It was peach and coral and lavender and seafoam and crystal blue.
It made her chapped lips smile at finding another relic of the ocean for her best friend.
During the many adventures of Jack Sparrow and his stubborn little sister, they managed a few trips to the provenance of Port Royal. There (Y/N) had befriended a young blacksmith apprentice.
At the age of thirteen she was mastering the art of pickpocketing and stealing small objects from markets and stores. On her way to swipe a few daggers from the outside barrel, Will Turner had come out with grease stained hands and a soot covered face.
She quickly dropped the blades back in the barrel.
Will looked her up and down, a young lad of her similar age. “Can I help you?” He eyed the hand she hid behind her back.
“Just… looking for a gift,” she cleared her throat, “For my brother.”
“You want to give him a sword?” Will rubbed his dirty hands along his apprentice apron, “Is he a part of the Navy?”
She blinked a few times, “He’s a merchant. We sail to different ports to sell our goods.”
The answer seemed to put him more at ease. He believed her. “I could see where a sword might be helpful. There are less friendly types along distant shores – pirates and the like.”
She nodded slowly.
There was a pause before he continued, “I’m William Turner.” He seemed bashful to extend his grimy hand.
She gave a shy smile, weeks at sea with a motely crew and her pirate brother made her yearn for friends and company. She slowly accepted his hand, “I’m (Y/N).”
“And your surname?”
“Just (Y/N),” she smiled.
He smiled back, “It’s not proper to call a lady by her first name.”
She almost gawked – it was the most manners she’d seen in years, “I have no other name.”
“Your family name?” he asked, a little line appearing between his brows. “What of your brother?”
“We were orphaned at a young age,” she shrugged, “There was no record of our full titles.”
Will nodded solemnly, “I’m sorry.”
She looked towards the ground, “I’ll tell my brother of your smithery. Perhaps we’ll visit again.”
A desire to give her more of a reason to see him again, Will extracted a freshly polished sword from the wall. “Here, use this for your gift.”
“But I haven’t any money,” she said quietly.
“Then I’m gifting it to you,” he grinned, “I’m learning to make swords, I’ll just make another to replace this one.”
She laughed, “Thank you, Mr. Turner. I should do well to return the favor in the future.”
He passed over the hilt, “I look forward to our next meeting, Miss…” He seemed to struggle for a moment, “Miss. (Y/N).”
Five years had passed since that initial meeting and at reaching adolescence, (Y/N) was excitedly walking the streets of Port Royal to find the smithery. Over the years she had developed the habit of collecting trinkets and objects of her travels to show Will.
He still believed her to be a merchant, learning the trade from her honorable elder brother. And he found himself looking hopefully towards the white sails of the docks more than once to see her briny steps.
He longed for her visits, growing accustomed to her witty banter, wild stories, and lovely smile. And in the meantime, he practiced the art of black smithery and fashioned her intricate and deadly weapons, hoping to be of help as she sold them at the next port.
In reality (Y/N) was using these gifted weapons in her adventures pillaging islands and seeking treasure with her pirate crew.
To make herself feel somewhat better about all the lying, she sought to gift bits of all the gold and treasure she found to Will. He always got so excited to see things from beyond the shores of Port Royal.
“Mr. Turner,” she said orderly, “The coals have gone cold. What are you doing dallying about?”
Will turned from his workshop table, smile already on his clean shaven face. The summer had been kind to him, growing a couple inches and broadening his shoulders since the last time they met.
“Miss. (Y/N),” he said quietly, as if relieved she had come back at all. It was easy to imagine horrors befalling her while at sea, “You can’t imagine how good it is to see you.”
They hugged each other, (Y/N) laughing and Will grinning. He apologized for getting soot on her cheek, attempting to rub it away, “I’m so sorry.”
“Not at all,” she waved his fingers away, not wishing to have him feel how flushed the action made her.
He seemed in a similar state as a pink color flooded high on his cheekbones. “You’ve brought me more souvenirs?” he said as he spotted the bundle under her arm.
“Yes,” she said eagerly, “You’ll never believe what I found.” She went to the workshop table and laid out a roll of leathery animal skin, a few jagged shark teeth, and the opalescent seashell she found on her last adventure.
“Did you trade for some shark?” he laughed, touching the dried, scaly shark skin.
(Y/N) smiled, remembering the time she killed the reef shark while circling the coral shoreline of a tiny island. She was alone in a paddleboat and saw the opportunity to stick her sword through the predators skull.
“Yes, I’d say it was a rather lucky trade. Can’t you use this skin to make sword handles?”
He nodded, “That I can.” He looked at her from the corner of his eye, shy in how much he wanted to look. He never knew how long it would be between visits and while she was there he wanted to soak up every second.
“How long are you here?” he asked, hopefully.
(Y/N) bit the inside of her cheek, “Three days.”
Will sighed, nodding to himself, “Well then, we’ll just have to make the most of the next three days.” He untied his apron and made sure the furnace was cut off from heating more fuel.
“What is there to do that we haven’t already done?” she laughed, remembering days of captaining sailboats, sword fighting in the square, climbing palm trees, and catching crabs.
Will seemed undeterred by the question, “There’s plenty to do. We haven’t swum in the pools by the cove. We haven’t gone for tea in town. We haven’t ever attended the Governor’s Ball before.”
“The Governor’s Ball,” she scoffed, “Please, Will – a merchant has no place at a ball.” A pirate has no place near the highest powers of the British garrison.
“Don’t worry, I know people in town. We can find you a dress and I can teach you anything you’re worried about.” He returned to her side and took her hands, “Let me take you dancing.”
She looked at him in wonder, “You’d take me dress shopping?”
He smiled and gave a quiet nod, “I figured we’re not kids anymore, (Y/N). We could… we could go to a ball together.”
She squeezed his hands a bit tighter, “All right,” she smiled, “All right, but only if we can still go hunting for coconuts and go horseback riding through the town.”
“Whatever you want,” he grinned, “I’d go pirating just to spend another day with you.”
She froze, still with a smile on her face, “Would you really?”
He shrugged, “Maybe.”
~~~
A few years later and (Y/N) had found herself back in Port Royal and scouring the streets for her idiot brother.
After a long time coming mutiny from Barbossa, Jack was left stranded with nothing but a pistol. (Y/N) having fought and spit and destroyed half the Black Pearl to keep the mutiny from happening, she was left to the brig.
As skillful as she was, (Y/N) was out of the prison within a day, finding her way to a paddleboat and rowing for the remote island Jack was on. She was soon picked up by a real merchant boat that passed rumors of a peculiar wily man telling stories of roped sea turtles.
It led her to the nearest ports to where she learned Jack had stolen a sailboat that was headed to Port Royal.
And there she was in search of the pirate, hoping she could stop him before he did anything terribly stupid.
She spotted a curious number of redcoats marching in the streets. She tried to keep them from her mind as she nodded to some of the shopkeepers that recognized her from previous visits.
That was until she noticed a heavily scarfed man sneaking into the smithery, beads and all. She groaned, running for the shop.
“Jack,” she whispered, closing the wooden door behind her with a click of the lock. “What the devil are you doing here?”
He was hanging by the cogs of the donkey operated machine, accomplishing his goal of breaking his chained wrists apart.
“(Y/N)?” he said, “How did you find me?” He peered over his shoulder as if to see the army it must’ve taken to track him down to Port Royal.
She rolled her eyes, “After years pirating with me you still doubt my capabilities. I wasn’t about to stay on the Pearl with Barbossa and his stupid monkey.”
“I’ve found myself in a bit of a problem,” he said, brandishing the cuffs on his wrists.
“I can see that,” she cursed, hands on her hips, “You’ve got the entire British army knocking down every door.”
Speaking of which, someone was coming through the front.
“Damn,” (Y/N) whispered, feeling her brother drag her into a hiding place.
It was Will coming home, no doubt, from dropping off another well forged sword. He settled into the shop, inspecting his tools when he came upon a hat.
A pirate hat.
(Y/N) glared at her brother and bared her teeth, “You piss poor excuse for a pirate.”
Jack leapt from his hiding place, sword in hand to take back what was his. He directed the blade at Will’s chest.
“You’re the one they’re hunting,” Will said. “The pirate.”
“You seem somewhat familiar – have I threatened you before?”
(Y/N) smacked her face with a hand, scrounging for the nearest sword, which wasn’t hard considering they were in a blacksmith. She watched carefully as Will and Jack shared a few feints and parries with their swords.
She was impressed to see that Will had continued to practice his swordplay.
It wasn’t until a hurling sword stuck itself in the door that (Y/N) made her appearance.
“Will, stop!” she cried, brandishing her weapon, “Please, leave him alone.”
“(Y/N)?” he questioned, focus momentarily off his target, “When did you get to Port Royal?”
Jack had extracted his own sword, “Come along, dearest. It’s best we leave.”
Will flipped his head between the pair of them, “Excuse me?”
“I’m really sorry about this, Will.” She swallowed hard, sidestepping towards the window as Jack did the same, “But we need to go.”
“You and…?” he frowned, “The pirate?”
“My brother.”
Stunned, Will almost missed the attack coming from Jack. He swooped to the furnace and pulled out a red hot sword, blocking the incoming blow.
(Y/N) screamed, “Jack! Leave him alone!”
The pair of them struck and danced and parried around the forge – Will angrier than (Y/N) had ever seen him.
“How do you know (Y/N)?” he demanded.
Jack made a face as he blocked another blade, “How do you know (Y/N)?”
“He’s my brother, Will,” she cried, stomping her way to where she might join the swordfight. “I lied about him being a merchant.”
“A merchant,” Jack grimaced, “Could’ve done better with the lying, love.”
“(Y/N) is not a liar,” Will gained a few steps with his hard hitting blows, “She is an honest woman and a fair fighter.”
Her sword came between them, directing Will’s into the ground, “I’m sorry, Will.”
He was breathing heavy, bewildered, “But he’s a pirate.”
Jack pointed his sword in (Y/N)’s direction, exasperated, “SHE’S a pirate!”
Will gave him a scathing glare before completely disregarding his weapon and tackling Jack to the ground. They rolled around the hay and dirt as (Y/N) shouted at them.
“This is not how to handle a misunderstanding, Will! Jack, pull yourself together with what little dignity you have left. For God’s sake…” She planted herself between the brawling pair and shoved Jack to the side, keeping him from launching a counterattack.
“What is he so hellbent on protecting your name for?” Jack wheezed, using one of his many scarves to dab at his neck.
Will was boiling, “(Y/N) is an honorable woman and I won’t have you slander her name with titles like pirate. She is respectable and good and not at all capable of what you’re suggesting.” He looked towards (Y/N), “I refuse to think of the most important person to me as a criminal.”
(Y/N)’s mouth fell open, “Will…”
“Well, I hate to break it to you, mate,” Jack said, twirling his sword around, “But she’s my sister. And by association – a pirate.”
Will let his arms hang limp at his sides, staring at (Y/N)’s feet – unable to meet her eyes. “Is that true?”
“I knew I wouldn’t be welcome if I told you what I really was,” she grimaced, “I didn’t plan on us becoming friends.”
He closed his eyes, breathing deeply, “All those gifts you gave me…”
“Listen, Will…” she didn’t dare take a step forward, “I know you’re mad. But I never lied about anything else. I never pretended around you. This is me, pirate or not. You know me. And this is not how I would’ve told you, but for the sake of me not getting hanged today – could you please let us go.”
Will looked deep in an inner turmoil, fists clenching as he fought over her words. Jack was still trying to yank out the sword pinning the door closed.
“I haven’t forgiven you…” he muttered, letting out a great sigh, “But there’s a path out back you can take for the docks.”
(Y/N) nodded, “Thank you.” She placed a hand on his arm while on her way out. “I’ll come find you tonight.”
He clenched his jaw, but finally looked at her, “Just come back safe.”
Her heart beat a little harder, a little warmer, “I will.”
Codywan POTC AU ideas
Ok so people seemed to like the idea (and my lack of experience in actually making posts that reach people showed when I tried to make this post through reblogging and it didn't appear anywhere :') ) so here's what I currently have with some rough drawings!
Here's the original post I made about it
Ideas and drawings for AU below, please feel free to use!! No idea if I'll actually write something for it, the creature in charge of driving my brain will decide I guess.
Ok so, Obi-Wan fills the role of Elizabeth and Cody is Will in terms of who’s the governor’s child (or grandchild/ward here) and who is found floating at sea with a mysterious medallion and becomes a blacksmith. Going to deviate from the story a lot but needed Cody to have that blood importance link - you will see why later.
Dooku is governor who takes in his grandson Obi Wan as his ward after Qui-Gon’s death, then brings him with him to port royal (feel like Dooku is a good fit for all the colonisation/sugar plantations/definitely not the good guy the films presented him as considering Caribbean in the 1770s.) Obi-wan and Cody grow up keeping in contact and obliviously infatuated with each other as per films.
Not sure if there’s a Norrington equivalent here. Satine would probably be the easiest fit in terms of romantic triangle but couldn’t be an exact match as she’d never be a soldier even if we ignored period accuracy (no idea if I will or not) and a lot of his actions would be an insult to her as a character. Think it would probably be that Satine and Obi-Wan are dear friends who aren’t interested in each other romantically but are being pressured to marry because advantageous match etc. (Possibility of both getting into Methodism and abolitionism through that and that being their points of discussion, and the clash occurs when from start of events of second film Obi-Wan goes and begins to take a much more active route to abolition eg. Killing slavers and boarding their ships to liberate those inside. Satine being against the killing and violence etc but thats later on!)
For Captain Jack Sparrow, who better than the greatest space pirate of them all, Hondo Ohnaka! (Was considering having Quinlan Vos for it but feel like his moral compass is too strong honestly)
As in the films, black pearl (possibly renamed) attacks the port and Obi-Wan is taken aboard with medallion when he invokes parley and, when he gives his surname as Fett, is taken away as they leave. Barbossa I’m currently thinking is Maul (which ties in beautifully and absolutely not completely accidentally with the clone wars episode where Hondo’s crew mutiny him to join Maul) who is going to manage to get singularly obsessed with Obi-Wan by the end of the events of the first film where he is not actually dead/possibly reincarnated like Barbossa in the films but blames Obi-Wan for everything (which would honestly be more justified than the root of Mauls obsession in canon).
Cody breaks Hondo out to help him rescue Obi Wan, they assemble a crew on Tortuga. Various Jedi characters will be appearing as part of a large network of escaped slaves and outlaws (for various reasons) who want to help people in similarly difficult and/or dangerous situations. The Jedi have had dealings with Hondo before and essentially have a similar reaction to him as ghost crew in rebels - don’t trust him as far as they can throw him but often forced to work with him against their better judgement.
Plot progresses as first film but more oh the real villains are the colonisers (though Maul and his crew are giving them a run for their money). Find out that not only is Fett blood needed to break the curse since Jango was involved with initial treasure taking, but there’s a mysterious extra reason why people are wanting to get their hands on a son of Fett. Murmurs of gaining favours with others saying it’s bad luck to have one on the same ship as them. Jedi and Hondo who have known Fett are also reluctant to give their opinion when Cody asks what Jango was like.
Movie accurate romantic and sexual tension between obi-wan and cody, gonna say period accurate homophobia also playing its part in stopping them acting on it.
After being rescued from being marooned Obi-Wan promises Dooku he will marry Satine if they rescue Cody, then sneaks out of ship to help take the Pearl and then on to rescue Cody. If it is Jedi in the crew they may well go with him but otherwise same as film. Hondo persuades Maul that he should become a commodore and Mauls crew “take a walk”. Then events as film but Obi wan kills Maul.
When they’re back at port royal, Cody saves Hondo from execution and Obi Wan saves them both either through really banking on his power as Dooku’s ward/heir or sneaking them away with distraction (possibly even before execution date). I quite like the second option as there’s an opportunity for using smugglers tunnels and a first, desperate kiss as Cody escapes with Hondo to join the crew on the Pearl.
So ends first film as it were. Here’s some more rough drawings of Cody and Obi-Wan start of first film vs third film. I absolutely used a reference for that first drawing of Cody and I nabbed the obi wan base for the drawings from another piece I’m working on so sorry about style discrepancies!
Tumblr media
Second film! Satine and Obi-Wan’s wedding is taking place the next day and Cody, who has been writing letters back and forth with Obi-Wan , is waiting in the smugglers cave for him so they can run away together. But Obi-Wan never shows. Cody either hears at port or through Satine directly (who knew the plan to run away and was banking on the scandal meaning she could avoid marriage for a good while afterwards) that Obi-Wan has been taken into captivity by a Lord Palpatine/Sidious working for the interests of the East India Trading Company. The charges are for aiding and abetting pirates, his role in helping Hondo and Cody escape has been discovered apparently (maybe yes maybe no, Palpatine doesn’t give a fuck he just wants the compass). Cody somehow finds out about the compass being the wanted trade (Satine as a go between perhaps? Saying she’ll send hired men to get the thing that will save her fiancé?) and heads off in search of Hondo.
Hondo’s meanwhile been visited by an old friend to tell him it’s time to pay his debt, and the black spot appears in his hand. Surprise it’s not Jango! It’s Either Fox or Rex! Hondo scared shitless and runs ship aground on an island which is where Cody finds him and his crew at that time. (Do the Jedi help him get there??) Anyway think the island scenes will be more OFMD vibes than actual events of dead man’s chest.
Hondo tricks Cody into going onto shipwreck to search for key he’ll trade in return for compass. Flying Dutchman arrives and with it it’s captain, Darth Vader.
Another very rough drawing I added extremely rough shading to! Vader is combined Davy jones style with a vampire squid because 1) on brand 2) the membrane sections reminded me of the his mask. He’s wearing a bicorn hat which wouldn’t actually be the trend for another couple of decades but let’s just pretend Vader is incredibly fashion forward.
Tumblr media
Cody is alive and so not of interest to Vader, until Hondo, who Vader has sensed and has appeared in front of on the Pearl, tells Vader that he’s a Fett and so part of his payment of 100 souls. Vader scoffs that a Fett son is payment of another’s debt and can’t be used by Hondo, but Hondo replies that Jango Fett died on land and so has no need to settle his debt anymore. Vader finally accepts when Hondo tells him Cody is in love, giving him a fortnight to find the other 99 souls.
Cody hasn’t heard this on the other ship so first he hears of it is Vader basically telling him and welcoming him as another son of Fett. Cody is confused when Vader tells him he can join his brothers on deck, figures he means crew mates, but instead comes face to face with dozens of men who look near identical to him in various states of ‘fishification’.
More rough drawings! I spent too much time on these but they’re still rough so heck it. Only did Alpha 17, Rex and Fox for these ones.
Tumblr media
Alpha has been part of the crew for the longest time, as the first son that Jango Fett ‘paid his debt’ with. Torn between hair styles, but he’s turning into a great white shark. Alpha hasn’t known any life outside of the ship as he was barely walking when Jango took him to Vader. Jango essentially decided to settle his debt with Vader by making the souls to give himself because he’s a full out bastard. Mostly this meant one night stands and then showing up a few years down the line and promising to the mother he’d take care of the child.
Fox actually managed to live his life without Jango taking him as a child but it was still a hard life and he’s actually encountered Lord Palpatine/Sidious before. He doesn’t talk of that time but he has the brand on his neck from it (the pirate P). Either Palpatine killed him or eventually he either ran into Jango or those who knew of sons of Fett and believed that sending one to Vader would grant you favour from him/gain you a wish or something. It doesn’t, Vader just subtracts one from Fett’s debt. (Possibility of Palpatine killing Fox hoping to gain communication/favour with Vader?)
Rex is the most recent addition to the brothers in the crew aside from Cody. He’s only a couple of years younger and only a bit of fishification has started. He’s the most hopeful still of the brothers. He’s the one Cody trusts most and has as a confidant for his plan to steal the key.
Meanwhile Obi-Wan has escaped and disguised himself as a pirate. Manages to find Hondo and various Jedi. They may their way to island with the chest on it and Cody, who has managed to escape the Dutchman (name change pending) appears and fights Hondo.
Feel it would be kind of funny if Maul were to appear at this point and go all KENOBI, just to add to the chaos.
Vader is Anakin and fulfils the role of Davy Jones with Calypso being Padme (fun bit when they go to see her in her human form and they’re met by the handmaidens). Not a perfect fit as padme isn’t flighty and wild like the sea but hey ho. So Vader locked away his heart and trapped Padme in human form.
I honestly have no idea if the twins are running around somewhere or not and what they’re doing. Ashoka is definitely around somewhere as is Ezra and other rebels.
Had an idea of reincarnation or believed to be of Obi-Wan as someone Vader viewed as his in some way. Can either actually be reincarnation of just that they look similar/obi-wan is a descendant but Vader ends up obsessed with him which helps add validity when they pretend he’s Calypso/Padme.
Satine has been facing off with Palpatine and his cronies from a legal stand point but Palpatine isn’t playing fair or legal (particularly when he gets Vader’s heart (possibly delivered by Maul?)). Bo Katan would be sick to turn up and fight anyone and everyone.
Not sure if Jango is actually dead or not, but he had Boba and since he stuck around and loved his mother he thinks of him as his true child and has amazing cognitive dissonance to not be horrified and trying to rescue the others. But think he’s probably dead and boba’s running around somewhere not even aware how much danger he’s in (but possibly told by Jango not to tell people his real surname).
Oh also! Note on initial drawing - so I imagine that occurring with Mace Windu filling the role of Barbossa in the wedding scene!
Anyway hope there’s something in here that intrigues people!
Pirates Ramblings
The Pirates of the Caribbean universe would be so much funnier if the British won in At World's End because then Davy Jones would just work for the British forever and the list of shit to do with Davy Jones in the Royal Navy is near-endless. Like he'd totally be involved in a bunch of major naval battles because the Flying Dutchman is invincible. He'd definitely fight in the Napoleonic Wars, the World Wars, the Opium Wars, among others. But Davy Jones would also get quite bored during peacetime so the navy would probably assign him to hunt pirates in the Indian Ocean or something.
You may be thinking, "If Britain has an invincible ship and an immortal crew on it's side, surely they'd win the American Revolution, right?" Wrong. America would still win because if the British asked Jones and his crew to sacrifice their once-in-a-decade chance to be on land just to fight Washington, they'd probably just say "Screw you!" and hang out at a bar in Massachusetts instead.
Come the late 19th century, the Dutchman would need some retrofitting to remain effective so they'd turn it into like a destroyer or something, but it would be tough to renovate it due to the fact that they have to coax Bootstrap and that other guy out of the walls, as well as Jones' demand that they don't dismantle his organ.
Davy Jones would probably end the Russo-Japanese War early because the Second Russian Pacific Squadron would fire on the Dutchman thinking it's a Japanese torpedo boat and Jones would overreact accordingly.
Davy Jones would probably get notified when the Royal Navy updates their uniforms and be sent a new uniform but he wouldn't wear it until it's sufficiently barnacle'd.
In the 1930's Davy Jones would probably come across Amelia Earhart stranded on an island or something. He'd heard about this woman in the newspapers and the radios, so he'd sail close to the island and yell through a megaphone "MISSES EARHART I'M A BIG FAN-AH DO YOU FEAR DEATH?" Bonus points if she agrees to join him and her Dutchmansona (for lack of a better term) involves coconut crabs in some way.
At some point the Spanish would get a similar idea and fish Salazar out of wherever the fuck they left him (I don't remember shit from that movie) and he and Davy Jones would have beef over who's the better supernatural sea captain.
Fast forward to the modern day, Davy Jones would still be active, probably hunting Somali pirates or something. He'd definitely get cancelled on social media for one thing or another.
There's probably a whole lot of other goofy ahh scenarios that would happen but these are the only ones I can think of at present.
“Captain, we’re going to need to make a port stop sooner than we expected. Our food supply is a little low.”
Looking off towards the distance of the endless sea, Malik was leaning against the wooden railing along the side of the vast ship. A deep internal sigh escaping him from the calmness of the morning. The waves were docile today, clear skies, and perfect winds. Glancing over his shoulder to acknowledge his first mate, Jovey. His signature side smirk that was as charming as ever.
“Means the lads are all eating well. Maybe too well, but we’ll tackle that later.” The deep rumble in his chest resonates through his chuckle, coming out a bit course from the early morning air. “Set a course for Port Royal, should be the nearest one to us.”
Rising from his hunched position, his arms reach to the amber sky and soft huff escapes him. It had been a long month on the waters of the Atlantic, but shifting to the warmer tides of the Caribbean always reminded him where home was. It wouldn’t be more than a day now when he’d be able to collapse in a bed that doesn’t sway with the waves, in a warm tavern with a bottle of rum all to himself, and a bowl of stew from anything that wasn’t pescado. Possibly partaking in a little stealing, sabotaging, or cheating just to pass the time. Not having to be a captain for at least a week was a break he couldn’t wait for. The crew he inherited only knew how to follow orders when his voice was harsh as the winds, otherwise they’d slack off or get too comfortable. Not that he minded putting them in their place, it boosted his ego and there was a satisfaction in seeing the yielding in their eyes as they adjusted their tone and fixed their posture. Intimidation and strength. The qualities he believed was required of a captain, especially one as successful as he was.
Unfortunately for him, because of his imposing presence on both the waters and the shores, it was now a rare occurrence for his ship to be attempted to be commandeered or attacked by other occupants of the sea. Even on land, most steered clear of him or were careful with their words. It made his exhibitions boring to say the least, no challenges, no competition. There hasn't even been ruthless storms as of late, the type to make experienced sailors soil themselves, the ones that threaten to sink you with your ship until you come out victorious. Even now as he turns to grip the wheel in his hands and his eyes scan the deck a flight below him where his men work, he doesn’t feel that thrill of adventure that used to drive him. He didn’t know if he would anytime soon with his reputation being as strong as it is.
His luck was akin to that of being at the mercy of a coin toss at times, whether today was a virtuous luck sent by the gods or a vicious one, he couldn’t care when his wishes were granted. Of course they were, he always got everything he wanted eventually.
“Captain! We caught something!”
His heads whips over towards port side, his men hoisting up large net that swung and twisted violently. Setting Jovey to steady the wheel, he quickly glides down the railing of the stairs before hopping to his feet on the deck. Trotting over to the commotion as his crew surround the catch. They part away to forge a path for him as he approaches and what he see’s makes his whole world light up in flurry of excitement. A siren.
“Captain... is that the creature from the legends?”
Malik can’t help but let out a hearty laugh, not just at the question, but also out of astonishment at his luck. His eyes glued to the young male siren thrashing about in the thick rope, hissing and growling like a wild animal.
“That’s right lads! Look what the tide brought us, a siren from the tales of the sea.”
He gets down on one knee beside the tangled fishy creature. The strong scent of seawater mixed with an all too familiar rotten fish odor. Reaching down to grab the main rope line and tugging on it, the net tightens around the specimen and constricts its movements. A protesting growl leaving the siren as it glares through the rope straight at him. He can’t help grin a little maddeningly. Realizing just how amazing this turn of events was. Seeing this sirens unwavering aggression and defiance even from only being on board a few minutes sparked a fire in Malik.
“You’re far from home, aren’t you bilge rat? These aren't your waters.”
The siren, seemingly frantic and panicked from its predicament squirms in the net. Its tail thudding against the boards of the deck. Maliks chuckles overpowering the sirens protesting sounds. The crew that surrounded them watching in a mix of curiosity and caution. Taking the time to admire such rare creature in their waters. Its contrasting palette of blue hues and white accents. His finned tail pointed at the ends, three appendages along each side of his fish body with cerata extended out from each. His upper body resembling that of a normal young man, but scattered with a light blue vitiligo-esque pattern along his skin. Medium length dark blue hair damp and cascading over his shoulders. His fingers pointed like claws and his fangs baring. And those, oh so, captivating golden eyes.
“Alright lads, quit gawking. Why don’t we make our guest more... comfortable?”
Malik stands up as his crew get to work, knowing the protocol underlining his words. A few of the men dragging the siren towards the largest mast in the middle of the top deck. When they start to extract him from the net, he proves to be nothing if not aggressive and hostile. Using his sharpened nails to dig into the crews arms and legs, making them bleed. Biting hands and forearms when they try to lift him up. It took 5 sizable men just to get him up off the floor, but nobody was ready when one of the men got hit with one of the large appendages flapping around erratically through his struggle. The man stumbling back and falling down onto the wooden boards with a hard thud as he grips his chest. The crew managing to tie the siren up against the mast and restrain him. Everyone turns to look to their crew mate on the floor, struggling to breath. Malik rushes to his side and crouches down, inspecting the man and tugging his shirt down to see a hue of red amongst the inflammation quickly building on his chest.
“Hey… hey, lad, keep your eyes on me, alright? You better fucking stay awake, you hear me?”
Malik slapping the mans cheek a few times to keep his attention when he notices his eyes lolling around with no intention. He looked sick, almost nauseous. His hands clawing at his own chest as if there was a pain that he fruitlessly attempted to dig out of himself. Malik having to grab the mans hands to keep him from hurting himself.
“Get this boy below deck! Don’t let him fall asleep and keep a bucket near in case he vomits.” When his crew just stare at the both of them with nervous and distant expressions after what they witnessed, Malik let go of the mans hands and stood up with a threatening posture. “NOW!” That woke the crew from their paralysis as they quickly made their way to the injured man and helped carry him below deck to be treated and supervised.
Malik turning towards the mast where the siren was left restrained and desperately fighting at the thick rope. His hands clenching at his sides, a fury in his eyes that would make most crumble at his feet. He walks over to the creature with steady strides until he’s standing before him. The siren glaring right back up at him, a smirk twitching onto his face, expressing his satisfaction.
“Whoops, sorry cap. Didn’t realize how weak your me—”
The siren chokes on his words as Maliks hand wraps completely around his throat. An iron grip, unyielding as he leans down closer to the sirens face. A cold fury brewing behind his gaze while the creature flails and gasps for air. His tail beating against the mast frantically.
“If you dare to speak another word with that vile tongue fo yours, I will personally slice it out and force it down your throat. If that’s not enough to shut you up, I’ll cut off that tail of yours and feed you to the sharks. Got it, caviar?”
His voice was almost hushed, but didn’t lack the venom behind every word. Naturally making the siren tense as his glare falters from the combined threat and lack of oxygen. Maliks hand tightening around his neck hard enough to cause him to see stars and he reluctantly relented with a subtle nod. Enough for the hand to quickly retract and allow him to cough violently and heave for air. Maliks foreboding stance towering the fish creature while he watched with a sense of triumph that blossomed into pride as his grin plastered onto his face one more. For the first time in a long time, Malik found a thrill, something that made his heart race, something that made him tick. This siren, who had just backed down not even a few seconds ago, now scowling at him with a passion that was contagious.
“You have no idea how long I’ve waited for something like you to come along, little sea dragon.”
Long Journey - Chapter 8: Arrival at Port Royal
Tumblr media
Life hurts a lot, that's just how it is. At least that is what Destiny thought, living a life where living hurts more than dying. But one day everything changes when an unexpected guest appears. What does this long journey hide behind? Will it be worth it to be alive again?
The first light of dawn painted the horizon in hues of amber and rose as Destiny stood on the deck of the ship, watching as Port Royal slowly came into view. The bustling harbor was a stark contrast to the tranquility of the open sea they had left behind. The scent of salt and tar mingled in the air, a familiar reminder of the life she had grown accustomed to aboard the vessel.
Destiny ran a hand through her wind-tousled hair, trying to shake off the restlessness that had plagued her throughout the night. The rain had washed away some of the doubts and fears that had plagued her, but now, facing the reality of their arrival, they resurfaced with renewed intensity.
"Port Royal," Wooyoung murmured beside her, his voice tinged with awe and apprehension. "I never thought I'd see it with my own eyes."
San chuckled softly, his usual irreverent grin tempered by the gravity of their situation. "Welcome to the heart of the Caribbean," he quipped, though there was an underlying tension beneath his jest.
Captain Hongjoong joined them on deck, his expression unreadable as he surveyed the bustling port before them. "We won't be staying long," he announced, his voice carrying authority born of years at sea. "We have business to attend to, and then we sail."
Destiny nodded silently, her gaze lingering on the jumble of ships and buildings that crowded the harbor. The familiar rhythm of the crew preparing to dock filled the air—ropes creaking, sails unfurling, and orders barked in a language that was both foreign and familiar.
As the ship eased into its berth, Destiny found herself caught in a whirlwind of activity. The crew moved with practiced efficiency, securing lines and making the vessel ready for their brief stay. She marveled at their coordination, each member playing their part in the intricate dance of life aboard the ship.
"Destiny, can you gather the necessary supplies?" Seonghwa's voice interrupted her reverie, drawing her attention back to the task at hand. "We'll need provisions for the journey ahead."
"Yes, of course," Destiny replied, grateful for the distraction. She descended into the cargo hold, the scent of spices and dry goods enveloping her as she took inventory. Barrels of water, crates of dried fish, and sacks of flour—each item a lifeline in the unpredictable expanse of the sea.
"Need a hand?" Mingi's voice came from behind her, startling her slightly. She turned to find him standing there with a mischievous grin, his eyes twinkling with curiosity.
"I've got it," Destiny replied curtly, feeling Mingi's gaze linger a moment longer than necessary. There was something about him—his playful demeanor and quick wit—that put her on edge.
Mingi shrugged nonchalantly. "Suit yourself," he said with a shrug, feigning disinterest as he leaned against a stack of crates. "But don't expect any special treatment just because you're the captain's pet project."
Destiny frowned, a flicker of annoyance crossing her features. Mingi had been openly skeptical of her from the beginning, his playful teasing masking an underlying distrust that she couldn't quite understand.
Ignoring his comment, Destiny focused on her task, the weight of Mingi's scrutiny following her like a shadow. She worked quickly and efficiently, stacking supplies and double-checking the inventory with meticulous care.
"You know," Mingi's voice broke through the quiet, his tone casual yet edged with something sharper. "You're the reason we're all here."
Destiny froze, her hands pausing mid-motion as she turned to face him. "What do you mean?" she asked, her voice guarded.
Mingi shrugged nonchalantly, though there was a flicker of something unreadable in his eyes. "Wooyoung," he began, his voice low and measured. "He's not himself since you came aboard. He blames himself for what happened to your father."
Destiny's heart sank, the weight of Mingi's words settling like a stone in her chest. "That's not true," she replied, though the uncertainty in her voice betrayed her.
"Isn't it?" Mingi's grin was lopsided, his gaze challenging. "You're a distraction, Destiny. A reminder of everything he's lost."
Anger surged within her, hot and fierce. "I didn't ask to be here," Destiny shot back, her voice trembling with emotion. "And I didn't ask for any of this."
Mingi's expression softened, his usual bravado momentarily faltering. "Neither did he," he said quietly, his gaze searching hers for understanding.
Destiny turned away, the weight of Mingi's words settling heavily on her shoulders. When the last crate was stowed, Destiny wiped sweat from her brow, feeling a sense of accomplishment amidst the chaos of their preparations. She glanced over at Mingi, who was watching her with a lopsided grin.
"You've got spirit," Mingi said suddenly, his tone softer than before. "I'll give you that."
Destiny met his gaze, her eyes narrowing slightly. "Is that supposed to be a compliment?" she asked, her voice tinged with skepticism.
Mingi chuckled, the tension between them momentarily easing. "Take it however you like," he replied cryptically, before turning to leave the cargo hold.
Destiny watched him go, her mind racing with questions and doubts. Mingi's words lingered in the air like a challenge—a reminder that their journey was far from over, and that the shadows of their pasts would continue to haunt them.
As the crew prepared to disembark, Destiny felt a mixture of apprehension and determination. Port Royal stretched before them, a maze of alleys and markets teeming with life and opportunity. She knew that their time here would be brief, a mere stop on their journey—but she couldn't shake the feeling that their destinies were intricately intertwined with the secrets and uncertainties that lay ahead.
As the crew dispersed into their respective tasks, the morning sun cast long shadows over Port Royal's bustling streets. Destiny, accompanied by San and Yunho, made their way through the narrow, winding alleys, each step echoing with the rhythm of their footsteps against the cobblestones. Their mission was clear—gather essential supplies for the journey ahead, with a special focus on herbs and other remedies that would sustain them through the stormy seas.
"Think we should hit the tavern tonight?" San's voice broke the silence, his tone casual but laced with an underlying excitement. "Could use a drink after all this."
Destiny glanced at him, the memory of Mingi's words still heavy on her mind. She hadn't shared them with anyone yet, and the weight of it was starting to gnaw at her. "I don't know. I've been thinking about what Mingi said," she admitted, her voice barely above a whisper.
San raised an eyebrow, his curiosity piqued. "What did he say?"
"That I'm the reason Wooyoung is so messed up," she replied, her tone laced with frustration. "He thinks I'm a distraction, a reminder of everything Wooyoung has lost."
Yunho, who had been walking quietly beside them, looked up, his eyes filled with concern. "Mingi's always been a bit rough around the edges," he said softly. "But he's not entirely wrong. We all have our demons, and sometimes it's easier to lash out than to face them."
Destiny sighed, her thoughts drifting back to the night of the storm, to the chaos and the fear that had gripped them all. "I just don't know what to do anymore. It feels like we're all carrying so much weight."
San placed a reassuring hand on her shoulder. "We'll figure it out," he said, his voice warm with conviction. "One step at a time. Let's get what we need and then maybe we can find some time to unwind."
As they turned a corner, the sight of an old, decrepit shop caught their attention. The sign above the door read "Faba Mama's Curiosities," its letters barely discernible through the dust and grime. The shop's windows were dark, the interior shrouded in shadows that seemed to pulse with an eerie light.
"This place looks... interesting," Yunho remarked, a hint of caution in his voice. "Should we check it out?"
San shrugged, a grin spreading across his face. "Why not? Could be worth a look. Besides, what's the worst that could happen?"
Destiny hesitated for a moment before nodding. "Let's see what she's got."
They stepped inside, the door creaking loudly as it swung open, revealing a cluttered space filled with odd trinkets, ancient books, and jars of unknown substances. The air was thick with the scent of dried herbs and something distinctly metallic, like old iron. Shadows danced along the walls, the flicker of candlelight casting strange shapes that seemed to move and shift.
Behind the counter, an old woman with a hunched back and wild, silver hair peered at them with eyes that sparkled with mischief. Her nameplate read "Faba Mama," and her presence was as unsettling as the shop itself.
"Welcome, wanderers," Faba Mama's voice was a croaky whisper, her gaze never leaving them. "What brings you to my humble abode?"
Destiny stepped forward, her curiosity overcoming her initial apprehension. "We're looking for some herbs and supplies. Things that could help us on our journey."
Faba Mama cackled, a sound that seemed to echo through the very bones of the shop. "Ah, seekers of knowledge and remedies! I have just what you need, but be warned, not all treasures come without a price."
She gestured to a table laden with various jars and bottles, each containing strange and mysterious substances. There were dried leaves, powders that shimmered like stardust, and vials filled with liquid that seemed to swirl with an otherworldly glow.
San picked up a jar filled with what looked like crushed emeralds. "What's this?" he asked, his eyes wide with curiosity.
"Dragon's breath," Faba Mama replied with a grin. "A powerful ingredient, but use it wisely. It can either heal or harm, depending on the intent."
Yunho, who had been examining a book of strange symbols, looked up. "What about this one?" he asked, holding up a book with a cover made of what appeared to be human skin.
Faba Mama's eyes gleamed with amusement. "Ah, the book of shadows. It contains spells and secrets lost to time. But beware, knowledge can be a double-edged sword."
Destiny's eyes were drawn to a small, intricately carved box on a shelf at the back of the shop. It seemed to hum with a faint, almost imperceptible energy. "What's in there?" she asked, her voice barely a whisper.
Faba Mama's smile widened. "Ah, the heart of the ocean. A rare treasure, indeed. But its price is steep. Are you willing to pay it?"
Destiny hesitated, the weight of the decision pressing down on her. "What do you mean?" she asked, her voice trembling with uncertainty.
Faba Mama's expression turned serious, her eyes darkening. "To possess such power, you must first give up something of equal value. What is it you hold dear? What are you willing to sacrifice?"
The room fell silent, the only sound the flickering of the candles and the distant murmur of the sea. Destiny's mind raced, her thoughts swirling with the choices before her. She knew that the path ahead was fraught with danger and uncertainty, and the allure of Faba Mama's treasures was strong.
"We'll take the herbs," she said finally, her voice steady. "And whatever else you think we might need. But I'm not sure about the rest."
Faba Mama's eyes twinkled with amusement. "Very well. Consider it a blessing and a curse. Take what you need, and may the spirits guide your journey."
As they left the shop, the weight of the encounter lingered in the air, the echoes of Faba Mama's words a constant reminder of the choices they had yet to make. The sun was setting, casting long shadows across the cobblestone streets, and the promise of a night of revelry and respite seemed distant and uncertain.
"Let's head to the tavern," San said, breaking the silence as they made their way back to the ship. "We could all use a drink and some time to unwind."
Destiny nodded, the tension in her shoulders easing slightly. "Yeah, sounds good. Maybe we'll find some answers, or at least forget about the ones we don't have."
As they walked through the streets of Port Royal, the flickering lights of the tavern beckoned them, a haven of laughter and music amidst the shadows of the night. The mysteries of the day and the weight of their journey seemed momentarily forgotten, replaced by the simple desire to find solace in each other's company.
The door to the tavern swung open, and they stepped inside, the warm glow of the fire and the sound of laughter washing over them. For a moment, they were just a group of friends, bound by the sea and the shadows of their past, ready to face whatever lay ahead, one drink at a time.
-
The tavern was alive with the hum of voices and the clinking of tankards as Destiny, San, and Yunho found themselves a table in a cozy corner. They settled in, the warmth of the fire and the lively atmosphere easing the tension that had built up throughout the day. Tankards of ale were brought over, their frothy tops spilling over the sides as they were placed before them.
San raised his tankard with a mischievous grin. "Here's to new adventures and old friends," he declared, his voice carrying over the din of the tavern.
Destiny hesitated for a moment, staring at the tankard in front of her. "Actually, this is my first time drinking," she admitted sheepishly, feeling a flush rise to her cheeks.
Yunho chuckled softly. "Well, what better place to start than with friends?" he said, his tone gentle and encouraging.
San laughed, leaning back in his chair. "We'll take it slow then," he reassured her, his dimples deepening with his smile. "No need to rush into anything tonight."
As they sipped their drinks and exchanged stories, the tavern door swung open once more, and the rest of the crew—Hongjoong, Seonghwa, Wooyoung, and Mingi—entered, their faces flushed with excitement and the thrill of their successful mission.
Hongjoong spotted them and made his way over, a wide grin spreading across his face. "Well, well, what have we here?" he teased, clapping San on the shoulder as he took a seat next to Destiny.
Seonghwa followed, his usually calm demeanor softened by a hint of amusement. "Looks like you've started the party without us," he remarked, his eyes twinkling as he settled in beside Yunho.
Wooyoung, quieter than the rest, took a seat next to Destiny, his expression thoughtful. Mingi, trailing behind them all, eyed Destiny with a mixture of skepticism and curiosity, his lips quirking into a lopsided grin.
"Having fun, are we?" Mingi asked, his tone teasing as he took the seat opposite Destiny, leaning back with an air of nonchalance.
Destiny met his gaze evenly, the effects of the ale warming her cheeks. "More than I expected," she admitted, a small smile tugging at the corners of her lips.
Hongjoong leaned forward, his expression serious as he shared the news with the rest of the crew gathered around the table. The tavern had grown quieter now, the lingering echoes of revelry replaced by an air of anticipation.
"The map isn't with just any pirate crew," Hongjoong began, his voice low but steady. "It's with Captain Black and his crew—the most ruthless and cunning pirates on these waters."
Seonghwa nodded solemnly beside him, his gaze fixed on Destiny. "They've been terrorizing these seas for years," he added, his voice carrying the weight of their grim reputation. "They'll stop at nothing to get what they want."
Destiny's heart sank as she processed their words. Captain Black was infamous even among the most hardened sailors—a man known for his cruelty and greed. The realization hit her like a wave crashing over the bow of a ship. This journey had just become far more dangerous than she had ever imagined.
She glanced around the table, meeting the eyes of her companions. Wooyoung's brow furrowed in concern, his usual cheer replaced by a somber expression. Yunho looked troubled, his fingers tapping nervously against the table. Mingi's earlier skepticism seemed to have faded, replaced by a cautious wariness.
"And you're sure this is where the map is?" Yunho asked, his voice steady.
Hongjoong nodded grimly. "We've gathered as much information as we could. It all points to Captain Black's hideout," he confirmed, his tone leaving no room for doubt.
San leaned forward, his expression thoughtful. "What's our plan then?" he asked, his voice edged with concern.
Hongjoong exchanged a glance with Seonghwa before continuing. "We need to find a way to infiltrate their ranks, gain their trust," he explained, his mind already racing through strategies. "It won't be easy, but it's our best chance to retrieve the map."
Yunho spoke up, his voice calm but resolute. "We'll need to approach cautiously. Any wrong move could jeopardize everything," he cautioned, his experience as navigator evident in his words.
Destiny listened intently, her mind racing. She couldn't shake the feeling that everything was connected—the diary, her father's dealings, and now this dangerous mission. Pieces of a puzzle she hadn't known existed were falling into place, revealing a picture she wasn't sure she wanted to see.
Destiny stormed out of the tavern into the dimly lit streets of Port Royal, her mind swirling with a maelstrom of emotions. The revelation about Captain Black and the map had been a harsh blow, shattering her illusions and leaving her feeling adrift in a sea of uncertainty.
Her father's desperate obsession with El Dorado, the cryptic entries in the diary—all of it now made sense in a cruel, stark light. It was always about the gold, about wealth and power, about dreams that turned into nightmares. And Captain Hongjoong, with his role in concealing the truth, stood equally culpable in her eyes.
"How could they?" Destiny muttered to herself, her voice lost in the quiet of the night. Her father's actions, his hidden motives, and now the captain's deception—they all echoed in her thoughts like a haunting refrain. She had trusted them both, believed in them despite the whispers of doubt that had crept into her heart.
Lost in her tumultuous thoughts, Destiny turned a corner and found herself in an unfamiliar part of the town. The streets were deserted now, the revelry of earlier hours replaced by an eerie stillness. The distant sound of waves crashing against the shore mingled with the hushed whispers of the night.
A sense of unease crept over her as she realized she had wandered too far, too deep into the heart of the unknown. Port Royal, with its bustling markets and crowded taverns, now seemed like a distant memory, replaced by the solitude of empty streets and looming shadows.
Destiny paused, uncertainty gnawing at her resolve. She had always prided herself on her strength, her ability to weather any storm that life threw her way. But now, faced with the harsh reality of her father's deception and the captain's betrayal, she felt lost, adrift without a compass.
The night pressed in around her, a shroud of darkness that seemed to swallow her whole. She closed her eyes, willing herself to find clarity amidst the chaos of emotions. What was she to do now? How could she reconcile the truths she had learned with the dreams she had held dear?
A rustling sound snapped her out of her reverie, and Destiny spun around, her senses on high alert. The alley behind her stretched into darkness, its secrets hidden from view. Every instinct screamed at her to retreat, to find safety in familiarity. Before she could react, however, a group of rough-looking men emerged from the shadows.
Their faces were weathered and scarred, their eyes gleaming with malice as they advanced towards Destiny. They leered at her, their intentions clear in their predatory gazes. "Well, well, what do we have here?" one of them sneered, his voice laced with menace. "A pretty little thing wandering the streets all alone."
Destiny's heart pounded in her chest as fear gripped her. She backed away slowly, her mind racing for a way out. These men were no doubt pirates, drawn by the allure of Port Royal and the promise of easy prey. Panic threatened to overwhelm her, but she steeled herself, searching desperately for a way to escape.
Just as the men closed in, their intentions unmistakable, a commotion erupted from the end of the alley. Voices raised in anger and concern cut through the night, and footsteps echoed against the cobblestones. Destiny dared a glance over her shoulder and relief flooded her when she saw Wooyoung and Seonghwa rushing towards her.
Seonghwa's eyes blazed with fury as he assessed the situation, his stance shifting into one of readiness for a fight. He was poised to defend Destiny with everything he had, his protective instincts kicking into overdrive.
But Wooyoung froze.
His eyes widened in terror, his breath caught in his throat. The scene before him triggered memories he had desperately tried to bury—the night he had killed Destiny's father to protect her, the weight of that act heavy on his conscience. For a moment that stretched into eternity, he couldn't move, couldn't think, couldn't breathe.
Destiny's heart sank as she saw the paralysis grip Wooyoung. She knew he wanted to help her, to shield her from harm, but the trauma of his past deeds held him captive. Tears welled up in her eyes, a mixture of fear and disappointment washing over her.
Seonghwa, sensing the danger closing in, lunged forward with a primal roar. His fists connected with the first pirate's jaw, sending him reeling. The other pirates hesitated for a moment, taken aback by Seonghwa's ferocity, but quickly regrouped and retaliated.
Destiny, her mind racing with adrenaline, snapped into action. She grabbed a nearby wooden plank and swung it at the nearest assailant, catching him off guard. The impact stunned him momentarily, buying her precious seconds.
In the chaos that ensued, fists flew and curses filled the air. Seonghwa fought with calculated precision, each strike landing with deadly accuracy. Destiny held her own, fueled by desperation and determination to survive.
Amidst the melee, Wooyoung struggled against the weight of his memories. He clenched his fists, willing himself to move, to intervene. But the echoes of that fateful night held him in their grip, rendering him helpless when Destiny needed him most.
Just as the tide seemed to turn in their favor, reinforcements arrived. Hongjoong and Mingi sprinted into the fray, their presence adding much-needed firepower to their defense. The pirates, outnumbered and outmatched, began to retreat into the shadows from whence they came.
Destiny's hands trembled slightly as she leaned against the wall, her breaths coming in ragged gasps after the intense altercation. The adrenaline was still coursing through her veins, and the weight of the moment hung heavy in the air. Seonghwa approached her cautiously, his usual seriousness momentarily softened by a hint of humor.
"Why is it always you, Destiny?" Seonghwa asked with a wry smile. "Do you have some sort of trouble magnet hidden somewhere?"
Destiny managed a weak chuckle, appreciating Seonghwa's attempt to lighten the mood despite the tension. "If I do, it's definitely cursed," she quipped, though her eyes betrayed the lingering fear and uncertainty.
Hongjoong stepped forward, his expression grave as he glanced between Destiny and the frozen Wooyoung. "Let's not linger here. We need to get back to the ship," he suggested firmly. "I'll go get Wooyoung and talk to him. You all head back first."
Seonghwa nodded in agreement, his gaze shifting between Destiny and the darkened alleyway they had just escaped from. "Sounds like a plan," he said, his voice more serious than usual. "Let's move."
Yunho kept a watchful eye on their surroundings as they made their way back through the maze-like streets of Port Royal. Destiny followed closely behind, her mind still racing with unanswered questions and the unsettling realization that danger seemed to follow her wherever she went.
As they reached the pier where their ship was anchored, Destiny glanced back one last time at the shadowy streets of Port Royal. She couldn't shake the feeling that their encounter with the pirates was just the beginning of a much larger challenge ahead.
also I know you’re working on confessions but do you have any thoughts on like,,,, characterization for pirate!hobie cause he’s sooooo intriguing to me
Of course, I've been thinking of this a little bit since I plan to work on that after confessions. Here are some little facts and tid-bits that may or may not make it into the story itself.
Tumblr media
Pirate!Hobie is a cocky bastard. Pirates historically tended to be daring in their raids and Hobie is just that. He only really attacks ships that are owned by the royal gov and does so to make a point. It seems that he goes in without so much as a single thought of planning, but he's meticulous with his actions.
His family is from the Caribbean, but the Spanish government at the time was colonizing it and in the process his family died from the disease they brought over. He hates the government, loathes them, and attacks any ship bearing the royal insignia.
Pirate!Hobie who takes in anyone who needs help. Sometimes members of his crew are temporary, sometimes they chose to stay, either way, he provides them food and shelter in exchange for loyalty. Most of them are young and lost, needing direction in life. Hobie tries his best to make sure they don't end up dead. Sometimes he even just gives rides to travelers who need to get from one island to another. Now he has a lot of people undyingly loyal to him.
Pirate!Hobie who's ship is a stolen one from the royal government with a few modifications. He removed the insignia and replaced it with his own symbol of liberation.
Pirate!Hobie who has no problem killing colonizer scum, he burns ships, puts them at the bottom of the ocean with the captain tied to the wheel. Every captain should go down with their ship. He stands by that, and often spares the captain last so that they die alone in whatever way Hobie chooses to take their ship down.
Pirate!Hobie who loves to share some ale with his crew late after a raid and sing late into the night getting drunk out of his mind. That's how he ends up meeting you which might be the best or worst thing that's ever happened to him in his entire life.
John Rackham - Calico Jack
Measured by his hauls and compared to many other pirates of his time, John Rackham also known as Calico Jack (his nickname was derived from the calico clothing that he wore, while Jack is a nickname for John) was not a prominent figure - rather a "small fish" with a spatially limited sphere of activity, his female companions were much better known.
Therefore, not much is known about his earlier life, except that he was probably born in England in 1682 and then moved to the Caribbean. Until the end of November 1718, he sailed as quartermaster on the brigantine of the pirate Charles Vane. When Vane refused to attack a French warship with superior armament, Rackham stood up to him and demanded that he board the enemy. Vane initially prevailed and the pirates escaped the warship, but the next day a majority of the crew declared Vane a coward, deposed him and elected Rackham captain. Vane and his few followers were left with a small captured sloop, complete with provisions and ammunition.
Rackham subsequently plundered a number of ships; he initially turned down the royal amnesty that Woodes Rogers had brought with him to New Providence in July 1718. In the spring of 1719, after a few more captures, he overhauled his brigantine in the Bahamas. There Rackham met a married woman named Anne Bonny, who became his mistress and was soon pregnant. Rackham is said to have bought her off her husband James Bonny for a considerable sum.
After a sloop sent out by Rogers drove him off and took two pinches back from him, Rackham settled in Cuba for a time. He lived there with "a sort of little family" until he ran out of money and food; this apparently refers to Anne Bonny and their child together. In between, he now also submitted to the royal amnesty and sailed as a privateer for Woodes Rogers. Part of this crew was Mary Read, who was later arrested with him.  According to legend, Anne and Mary Read fell in love with each other after they had to show up on board disguised as men. In drawings, the two women are often depicted as a couple, though neither Anne nor Mary seemed to live monogamously. "They don't need each other. They want each other," says Amanda Cotton, a British artist, about her sculpture of Bonny and Read, which the British government, however, refused to install.  Historian Susan Baker also suggested that there was a lesbian relationship between the two, expressed in love and concern for each other. Whether they were purely lesbian is quite speculative, but more likely they were bisexual, considering that Anne and Mary had sexual relationships to men as well.
Rackham and his crew quickly relapsed as pirates, however, and eventually the Bahamas dispatched a heavily armed sloop under Jonathan Barnet, a privateer, to seize them. Barnet surprised the pirates off Cape Negril in western Jamaica during a drinking bout and overpowered them with little resistance. Only the two female pirates are said to have put up a determined fight.
Proclamation from Woodes Rogers naming Jack Rackham and crew as pirates, 1720 (x)
Rackham and his men were tried in Santiago de la Vega in Jamaica on 16 November 1720, found guilty and hanged the following day. The two women escaped the gallows by claiming to be pregnant. Read is said to have died in prison. There is only speculation about Bonny's further fate. She is said to have been freed through the influence of her father and returned to Charles Town, where she is said to have spent the rest of her life married and with children. Others say she simply disappeared, but it is known that she was not hanged.
(The shores of Sierra Leone) On the 5th of August, 1721, pirate Captain Bartholomew Roberts captured the Onslow near Sierra Leone, off the coast of Africa.
Roberts had decided that the Caribbean was becoming much too dangerous for his liking, after capturing dozens of vessels (his flagship of which he would always rename to the Royal Fortune) and began calling himself the “Admiral of the Leeward Islands,” opting to continue his luck elsewhere along the African coast. He had heard that HMS Swallow and HMS Weymouth had just departed from the area, back in early July, leaving the area defenseless against pirate attacks.
Tumblr media
(Roberts' flag he was known to have been flying at the time) On August the 5th, a battle would ensue between Roberts and his next target that had arrived on the scene; the Onslow, a massive slave frigate belonging to the Royal African Company, a ship he wanted to claim as his new flagship. The Onslow was en-route to Cape Coast Castle, delivering soldiers to be stationed there.
A number of the soldiers on board the Onslow would wish to join the pirates upon the encounter as their ship fell to the demands of the pirates, opting for an exciting life at sea, and after enough requests, they were accepted as crew. However, they would only receive but a quarter of the other pirates in the fleet, as they were soldiers - not sailors with experience operating ships.
Tumblr media
(18th century painting of a frigate by Dominic Serres) The pirates would also go about razeeing the ship (modifying her for her new purpose). It was stated they:
“fell to making such Alterations as might fit her so that she became, in all Respects, as compleat a Ship for their Purpose, as any they could have found; they gave her the Name of the Royal Fortune and mounted her with 40 guns.”
They also removed her internal walls for a clear space for working the guns, and pierced her hull to create new gun ports; transforming her from slave frigate to a pirate warship.
With impunity, Roberts would over the following months take dozens of prizes with his amassed fleet. This ‘Royal Fortune’ would be the 4th captured ship renamed as such, and would be Roberts’ final flagship, with him eventually dying on board her during a battle the following year on February 5th, just off Cape Lopez.
(Pictured is the coastline of Sierra Leone, the black flag Roberts had most recently been reported flying [August, 1720], and an 18th century painting of a large frigate by Dominic Serres)
The Disappearance of Amy Lynn Bradley
Tumblr media
August 19, 2024
Amy Lynn Bradley was born on May 12, 1974 in Petersburg, Virginia. At the time of her disappearance, Amy was a 23 year old graduate of Longwood University, having completed a degree in Physical Education. Amy attended university with a scholarship in basketball, and was a strong swimmer, previously having worked as a lifeguard.
Amy was about to begin a job at a computer consulting firm. She decided to go on a cruise with her family on the Royal Caribbean International cruise ship, Rhapsody of the Seas, as a celebration for herself.
The cruise ship was going to Curaçao, an island under the Kingdom of the Netherlands. On March 21, 1998, Amy and her family boarded the cruise. Before disappearing, assumingly on March 23, Amy and her brother Brad had been drinking late and dancing at a Mardi Gras nightclub party on the ship. They had been drinking with the ship's band, Blue Orchid. One band member, a man named Alister Douglas, also known as Yellow, had been drinking with Amy.
Alister claimed that he had left the party around 1 am. There had been a videographer there as well, Chris Fenwick, who had gotten a moment on film of Amy and Alister dancing.
Brad decided to go back to their cabin around 3:35 am. The ship's lock system had recorded that Brad returned to the family's cabin at this time. Amy followed him 5 minutes later. Brad claimed that him and Amy had sat on the suite's balcony talking before going to bed. He said Amy stayed awake longer before she went to sleep.
On March 24, 1998, between 5:15-5:30 am, Amy's father Ron woke up and went to check on his children. He saw Amy sleeping on a lounge chair of the cabin balcony. Ron claimed that he could see Amy's legs from her hips down, but he had dozed back off to sleep. When he got up again at 6am, Amy was missing along with her cigarettes and lighter.
Ron said he went to find her but couldn't. He said it was unlike Amy to just leave and not tell anyone where she was going. Ron searched the common areas of the cruise, and woke up the rest of the family. Amy was considered missing at 6:30am.
Amy's family reported her missing to the crew onboard, and pleaded with them to keep the 2000 other passengers from leaving the cruise ship and to make an announcement to help find Amy. However, they were told it was too early to make ship-wide announcement. After a majority of passengers disembarked the ship, an announcement was made at 7:50am.
Between 12:15pm and 1pm, the cruise staff searched through the ship but there was no sign of Amy. There was a 4 day search conducted by the Dutch Caribbean Coast Guard that ended on March 27, 1998. The Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines chartered a boat to continue to look for Amy. Helicopters and a radar plane were used in the search.
Authorities originally believed that Amy had either fallen overboard or died by suicide. This speculation was soon discredited as Amy was considered a strong swimmer and her body has never been found. There is no evidence of foul play.
There have been many supposed sightings of Amy since she went missing.
On the morning of Amy's disappearance, two passengers told Ron that they saw a woman who looked like Amy taking an elevator to the ship's deck with cigarettes and a lighter. This information has never lead to anything however.
There was a cab driver who said he had seen a woman matching Amy's description. The driver said the woman approached him and said she urgently needed a phone. This sighting has never been truly confirmed.
In August 1998, 5 months after her disappearance, a Canadian computer engineer claimed to have seen Amy walking with two men on a beach in Curaçao. The witness said the woman was constantly trying to get his attention, but he lost sight of her at a nearby cafe. The woman's tattoos were supposedly identical to the one's Amy had. The man claimed he had been 2 feet away from her and was certain it was her.
In January 1999, a US Navy petty officer claimed to have seen a woman at a brothel in Curaçao who claimed to be Amy Bradley. He said the woman begged him for help, saying she was being held against her will and was not allowed to leave. The man did not report the incident initially because he was afraid of his career in the Navy knowing he had been in a brothel.
He only contacted Amy's family after he had retired and saw her photo in a magazine. There's no evidence supporting this claim.
In March 2005, a witness named Judy Maurer claimed to have seen Amy in a department store bathroom in Barbados. She saw the woman enter the bathroom accompanied by three men who threatened her if she did not follow through on a deal. Judy said after the men left she approached the woman, who told her her first name was Amy and that she was from Virginia. The men then came back in and took her away.
There was a composite sketch of the three men and the woman based on Judy's account.
In the fall of 1999, Amy's parents got an email from a self-proclaimed Navy Seal Solider named Frank Jones. Frank told them that he was a former special officer who might be able to rescue Amy. He said his team had seen Amy being held by Colombian personnel in a housing complex surrounded by barbed wire. They gave an accurate description of Amy's tattoos and sang the lullaby that Amy's mother used to sing for her.
Over months, Frank would give the Bradley family news and provide reports on sightings of Amy. Frank told them they would attempt a rescue, but he needed more money. The Bradley's sent him a total of $210,000, with the National Missing Children's Organization helping them. They never received a call from Frank again.
In February 2002, Frank was prosecuted and charged with defrauding the Bradley's. Frank pleaded guilty in April and was sentenced to 5 years in prison.
There was a jawbone found in Aruba in 2010 that had washed ashore. This was initially thought to be the jawbone of Natalee Holloway, a woman who had gone missing from Aruba on a class trip in 2005. Once it was determined to not be that of Natalee, authorities ceased any other testing, despite others who had gone missing in the Caribbean. It was said that the bone is human and was likely Caucasian.
Amy's parents appeared on an episode of Dr. Phil on November 17, 2005. There was an image of a young woman who looked like Amy that had been emailed to the Bradley's was shown on the show. It suggested that Amy could have been sold in sex trafficking. There were two photos sent to the Bradley's via email, the woman in the photos resembled Amy. These photos were observed by an organization that tries to track victims of sex trafficking on sites that feature sex workers. The woman in the photo looks "distraught and despondent". Her name was apparently Jas.
There are many theories about what happened to Amy Bradley. Some believe she was sold into human trafficking in the Caribbean. There was inconsistencies of the story that Alister, the band member told versus what the CCTV footage shows. Many people also think a waiter was involved.
Throughout the night, Amy's family was approached by the same waiter who asked them to pass a note to Amy from him asking her to go drinking with him once they got to shore. There was a professional photographer that had printed out photos of the cruise, but there was no photos of Amy, making people believe someone had purposely removed them.
Authorities also considered that Amy had been murdered on the ship and thrown overboard. There's no real evidence suggesting this besides the jawbone that washed ashore in Aruba.
Amy was legally declared dead on March 24, 2010, 12 years after she had gone missing.
The FBI currently is offering a reward of up to $25,000 for anyone who has information that could potentially lead to the recovery of Amy or leads to an arrest or conviction of the person(s) responsible for Amy's disappearance. Amy's family, on top of this, is awarding $250,000 for information leading to her safe return and $50,000 for information leading to her current location.
There was renewned attention given to Amy's disappearance after Natalee Holloway went missing in 2005.
landfall: chapter 4
On a bright fateful morn, Jack Sparrow brings rumors of the Black Pearl and her crew of the damned to Port Royal. In theory, the ship should be no match for the dragon Tempest and his Captain Norrington — but the Pearl harbors dangerous shadows of her own. or: potc, but temeraire. multi-chapter wip, ~5.5k words
“This place used to be a den for some of those beasties,” Jack says. “Not like your big’un back in Port Royal, no, but the little wild gits. Rum runners took a chance and used this island as a cache. They came by, and I was able to barter passage off, after…”
He emerges from the cellar with two bottles of rum in hand and stops short, locked in place by Elizabeth’s glare. “After a grand total of three days,” he finishes. He at least has the presence of mind to look embarrassed. Quickly, his eyes flit away, back down into the cellar. “Looks like they’re out of business now — be it by beasties or your bloody friend Norrington, or his bloody beastie. Or their bloody navy, I ‘spose. Pick your poison, eh?”
“So that’s it, then?” Elizabeth demands. “That’s the secret, grand adventure of the infamous pirate Captain Jack Sparrow? You spent three days lying on the beach drinking rum?”
Jack shrugs. “Welcome to the Caribbean, love.”
He pushes a bottle of rum into her hands and slinks off. With his teeth he jerks the cork from his bottle with a low pop, and promptly pours the contents into his mouth with all the restraint that a rainstorm waters a garden.
Elizabeth is learning that chiefly luck determines your survival in the Caribbean. Wit comes second, and in a distant third place is perseverance. Though severely lacking the foremost trait, she can lean on the latter two. She turns the cool, dark glass of the bottle in her hand, mulling.
Pirates of the Caribbean Steddie + Ronance AU
So. I'm aware of the pirate Steddie AU, but what about a Pirates of the Caribbean AU?
Eddie as Captain Eddie Munson who lost his beloved ship, Hellfire, when he refused to carry "human cargo". He needs to repay his debt to Davy Jones, but newsflash - Eddie is actually a good guy and doesn't do shit to collect the souls he owes. He just collects misfits into his crew and tries to prepare for the moment he ends up in Davy Jones's locker. His crew has a lot of kids that lost their parents to the British navy - Dustin lost his dad and he joined the pirate crew to provide for his mom, Erica and Lucas were freed from a slave ship, El was being transported as a part of a circus/freak show...all that and more.
Nancy Wheeler is the daughter of the local British official, Mr. Wheeler. She would prefer to study and travel the world, but her only value lies in being married to a suitable person to expand the connections for her family. Nancy plays her role well and often talks to her assigned match, Steve Harrington, a son of a local wealthy merchant family. She and Steve are childhood friends and actually dated for a while, but it didn't work out, they function better as friends and they know it. They are both resigned to eventually being married, Steve finally having his family off his back and Nancy regaining some freedom in marriage with Steve because she knows he'll allow her to pursue her dreams, as much as possible.
The shitshow starts when Mr. Wheeler reconsiders the marriage and actually agrees to wed Nancy to a young officer from the navy, Jason Carver. Carver is traditionalist, considers Nancy more of a trophy wife and if Nancy thought that lifetime being married to her childhood friend and pretending to be in love would be dishonest, this is way way WAY worse. She and Steve try to plot, they try to figure something out, but Nancy's father forbids them to see each other as it would be improper.
As luck would have it, the pirate ship Hellfire targets their port next. It is well known for its connections to the Royal navy. However, what the pirate Robin Buckley - joined Eddie's crew at fifteen when her parents found her in bed with her music teacher (would be bad as it is, but the teacher was a woman, gasp!) - goes to plunder the house of the wealthy merchants and finds a handsome young man there instead. He tosses all contents of his parents' safe at her, already packed, and informs her that this is all hers if they take him and his friend out of this hellhole. Before Robin can react, Steve climbs the window to Nancy's room, tells her they're joining/being captured by the pirate crew (Nancy just rolls her eyes and says "well, beats marrying Jason fucking Carver") and that's how they end up on Eddie's ship.
Eddie just stares at the two and very guilty-looking Robin. "So. Are you joining us or are we capturing you for ransom?"
Steve returns his gaze and doesn't flinch when Dustin ransacks his very hastily put together sack of clothes. "Whichever allows us to stay longer. Now, shouldn't you set sail? The navy usually reacts by daybreak."
The pirates aren't happy about the newest addition, thinking Steve and Nancy would be a burden, but they soon prove themselves. They disregard their fancy clothes and scrub floors, climb and fulfill their duties without a single complaint. Nancy soaks in all information about navigation and shares what she knows about weather patterns from her studies, back when she was too young to get married and was free to do what she wanted. Steve inspects the crew's weapons and identifies when they could crack, which ones should be better maintained. When they ask him how the hell would a rich boy know this, he just shrugs and says that since his parents were never home, he often stayed with the local blacksmith, Benny, and observed him working. He would have liked to become a smith himself, but of course his parents wouldn't stand for it.
Of course they fall in love. Of course Steve adores the dashing captain with his heart, soaks in adventures, freedom, the new friends, but mostly just Eddie, Eddie who is vilified but always does the right thing. And of course Robin and Nancy fall for each other, finding in each other what their families refused to allow.
And maybe Eddie gets saved by Steve from his fate, moving in front of him when Jason Carver wants to kill him. Maybe Steve has to serve for ten years on the Flying Dutchman, but he'll be fine, because Eddie wants to pay his dues and will serve those ten years with him, no matter what Steve says. And in ten years Steve and Eddie will be free, because if in ten years someone who loves Steve waits for him on the shore, then the curse will be broken, and Robin and Nancy will be there. They will live on the shore, watch the sea every day. And in ten years, there will be a free room in their house for their two friends who didn't age a day, and neither did their love.
