HOT GAMEDEVS DON'T GATEKEEP
Inspired by this post by @midwinterhunt, here's a compilation of all the game dev resources I have come across, most of which I use fairly frequently. Most of these are free, some are paid but fairly cheap. Feel free to add your own resources. ✌️
Important reminder: When using basically any works or programs someone else created in your games, make sure you thoroughly understand the licenses and terms it has been shared with. If you don't know what the terms are, reach out to the resource and ask. Don't be lazy about this; it's not only dishonest but it can come back to bite you.
Engines
Unity - Best suited for mobile and multi-platform.
Unreal - Tailored for shooters and high-fidelity experiences.
PICO-8 - Virtual console for simple games
Godot - Open source and free!
GameMaker - Good for 2D games
Bitsy - Great little engine for making simple games and experiences
Construct - Never used but have heard nice things
Scratch - If you've never coded before, this is the best place to start. Great for young devs and those who want to get their feet wet.
Adventure Game Studio - Best suited for adventure games
RPG Maker - Best suited for top-down classic JRPG style games
Twine - Text-centric games like Interactive Fiction
Assets
OpenGameArt - Many assets, various licenses, and plenty of CC0 content.
Unity Store - For Unity only. Some free.
Unreal Store - For Unreal only. Some free.
Godot Asset Library
Jean Moreno's Toon Effects - Some of the best effects available on the Unity store. Unity only but I've used them in basically every project.
Steamworks.net C# Wrapper For Unity - Unity only C# wrapper for integrating Steam compatibility to your game
Itch.io - Plenty of free art assets and game dev resources
Kenney - Kenney makes tons of open-source assets for devs to use.
Art
Mixamo - Generates rigs for your humanoid models and lets you apply a library of free humanoid animations to them. Super helpful for prototyping. Adobe.
Blender - Free, open source and fully featured 3D program.
XNormal - Free offline normal map generator
Normal Map Online - Free online normal map generator
Crocotile - Cheap tool for building 3D models from sprite sheets
MagicaVoxel - Free voxel modelling tool
Piskel - Free online sprite drawing tool
Aesprite - Paid sprite drawing tool
TurboSquid - Not always great quality, but can be good source of free placeholders.
Textures.com - Limited texture downloads per day but free for personal use.
Pexels - Free stock photo resource. Most are free for commercial use. Check licenses.
Clipstudio - Good for illustration or graphic design. One time payment.
GIMP - Image editing program a-la Photoshop. Free.
Audio
Audacity - Free and fully-featured DAW/audio editor.
sfx.me - Free 8-bit synth-style sound effect generator for games.
CastingCallClub - Easy forum to find amateur voice talent for your project (p.s.: you should pay them).
FreeSound.org - Free sounds, searchable by license. A go-to for my audio needs.
Incompetech - Royalty-free music by Kevin McLeod.
Scott Buckley Music - Royalty free with conditions. Generally more on the cinematic side of things but very good stuff!
SoundCloud - 'Search -> By Track -> Filter: Use Commercially' leads to songs posted with allowance of commercial use. Always reach out to the artist to understand their terms and confirm that it's okay to use with your project.
Project Planning
Keymailer - Handy for mailing keys to influencers (don't expect a lot of traction unless you're paying for some of the features though).
Trello - Kanban board. Great for organizing tasks, managing bugs, etc. Free.
Notion - Private text and wiki page editor. Good for project organization, note taking, and fleshing out ideas. Free.
Obsidian - Alternative to Notion, with similar features.
Miro - Free whiteboard for organizing thoughts, images, brainstorming, etc.
Wave - Free Bookkeeping site. Great for keeping finances organized.

[image ID: the first image is of Stag Malinay, a young man with auburn hair and yellow-orange eyes. he's wearing a black shirt, black pants, and black, lace up knee high boots with belt straps. he's sitting on a red and gold throne. beside him is written his name, "Stag Malinay." the second image is of Granger, a girl with green eyes and short, wavy or curly black hair. in her hair is a red hat or ribbon. she's wearing a black turtleneck sweater, blue overalls, and a green coat. end ID]
Stag Malinay
Very self confident, bisexual manwhore with a troubled background he doesn't like to talk about. Said past is the cause of all his anger issues which he regularly takes out on the MC, initially. They become friends later, so it's okay. Also, he has a Tumblr account! @stagmalinay, run by me, the author. Can't really get more obscure than only selling a few copies of my entire book so far. Granger
so granger is the main character of the indie game "NeverHome" Chapter one, which is only $1 on Steam, is called NeverHome: Hall of Apathy. if ur a fan of young protags being put in RPG maker horror games, then this is the game for you!! so granger is just that… she wakes up to find herself in a strange, hostile world. she, along with the friends she makes, must solve the various puzzles before them while creatures are out to kill them… and along the way they can uncover the secrets of these never ending halls… her dynamics with the cast is also super fun… each character gets their moment or moments with granger. and what's so cute is that there's unique art for each pair that highlights the fact you cant get through these halls alone!! she also has her own theme song!! here!! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d_vwtmIj5cw it's called cyclical tragedy AND HERE IS AN ANALYSIS OF THE THEME!! MUSIC THEORY!!! written by my good friend @HIEMIOLA "cyclical tragedy" embodies the protagonist, granger, through the music theory behind the track and ties itself back into the main track as well. to begin with an overview of the track, the key is D minor and hte time signature is 3/4. the piece begins with a broken minor third starting from the tonic. that is, it begins on the main note and moves along the main chord, D to F. the next set of notes are C to E, which is shifted down a step. the phrase repeats again, this time D to F, then G to E, which is an inverse movement from the original sequence. even in this first part, we could tell that the protagonist begins from square 1 with a simple pattern, then tries it again when it works. however, the inverse breaks that expectation of repetition, thus showing the diverse variations of solutions she comes up with using just the tools she has (the two notes moving in thirds). just like the game, she is given a handful of objects as well as a knife to defend herself and solve the mysteries of the world she exists in. with her creative uses of the items given to her, she continues on her way through the plot. we will keep moving. the melody begins. true to the title of the track, the melody cycles around the same beginning note, D, that she always returns to at her square 1. this is a nod to the save states she is allowed to keep to make sure that we the players don't lose the game, but it also references the health bar that appears as a circle around her avatar. the melody, mapped out, is also moving in an up-down wave movement across the sheet music. granger is creative with the knife she has and the quest items she obtains throughout the story, but she is not entirely reckless. rather, she knows when it is time to return to the safe rooms to rest. to time her returns requires skill because she must run to cover without being caught by varying her path so the enemies don't corner her as she tries to return to the room. most of the time, she is successful, shown through the consistent return to the beginning note. let's keep going. i would like to turn your attention to the main theme briefly. in the bass notes, you can hear arpeggios and outlined chords. this makes up the bulk of the accompaniment in the main game theme. [mod note: the rest of the essay, and some more propaganda, is continued under a cut because tumblr will not process more text than this in an indent. sorry to split it up, please continue below for the rest of the essay and additional propaganda!]
the third variation of granger's theme also has arpeggiated chords in the accompaniment while the melody features broken chords. at this stage, the pattern switches to eigth notes instead of the quarter notes at first. with greater movement and heightened senses, she runs throughout world and befriends other people, thus interacting further with the environment. while she isn't exactly someone we would call open, she is respectful to the people she first meets and has no problems with asking them for help when she needs it. because of her openness to working together, she speeds up her progress by asking for aid at obstacles that would be too difficult for her to overcome on her own, such as asking a teammate to break things, move things, or reach into smaller holes. fusing the main theme elements with her own theme marks this step as the inciting incident that sets her on the path to escape from this world. we'll continue.
continuing the same part, we hear some secondary fifths. i'm not entirely sure if this is what you call it, but it is a nod to the parallel key, D major. depending on what theory class you take, this could also be considered the other half of the key. i dont know how else to describe it, but i digress. these are glimpses to different dialogue options she could take, glimpses to a different key or a different ending. because this game only has one chapter ending so far, we are unsure of what other paths granger will end up in; we only know that there are certainly other endings she will experience, only to begin the cycle again when the save state is loaded for players to reach another ending. both A major and G major are chords that signify different choices that may lead her elsewhere only for her to return back to the tonic or main note, D. despite this, she keeps going, as will we.
at the midpoint of the track, we see a quick shift in patterns. instead of upward leaps in the notes, the melody falls in stepwise motion. true to the plot, this is another turning point of the game when she is forced to make a choice: continue or stop. after facing the spoiler event, her once determined personality is challenged as she struggles to keep herself and her team together. despite being the headstrong protagonist who spearheaded solutions, even now she finds herself doubting and taking smaller steps, smaller risks.
even after all of this, she rises to the challenge as the melody returns to its beginning sequence. true to a protagonist she gets up again despite the events that transpired and keeps her team moving in their lowest points. the thirds return as she finds more objects to solve more puzzles to open more rooms to save more friends. this repeating part of the track only solidifies her resolve as the piece ends with a broken chord in the main key, her key, of D minor. despite everything that transpired, she stayed true to herself."
the game is also so, so charming with the art, music, and story made by the same person… its so clearly loved and full of passion!! i love listening to the game's ost on occassion!! since it's all on youtube!
ok one last thing thing!! on may 8th, the game hit 100 downloads (on both steam and itch.io). you can see the creator of the game celebrate that with this lovely drawing of granger: https://twitter.com/NeverHome_Game/status/1655761270694633472
so at most, only a bit over 100 people have played the game… id like to say that makes it obscure!!
anyways granger and neverhome!! we love to see our protagonists put in horrific situations and isn't she super cute with a lil bow on her head? she is my daughter…

Are there any ttrpgs for low fantasy but non-gritty vibes?
THEME: Non-Gritty Low Fantasy
Hello friend! Wow, this request sure threw me for a loop. It took a while, but I hope these games have something that piques your interest. You might find some common themes among these recommendation - namely, Lord of the Rings and Studio Ghibli.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hearth, Home & Halflings, by Loreshaper Games.
You are an inhabitant of the Eastland Greens. It’s a beautiful place, untouched by the concerns of the world around it. Halflings have lived here for centuries, going about their business (usually eating anything they can get their hands on) with aplomb.
Nothing serious has happened in the last several centuries, but the inhabitants of Eastland Greens need to find ways to entertain themselves. Usually, they channel this into wholesome hobbies—cooking (important, given their voracious appetites!), golf, and raising all sorts of plants and animals.
This is a one-page rpg with extremely simple rules, with very low stakes. Each player uses a d6 to determine whether they succeed, and if they succeed with style (6 or higher) they gain a Mischief token. You can use Mischief tokens to add 1 to a future roll, but you’re also accepting small problems that you’ll have to fix as you go. Will you outperform your rival at the local festival? Make off with a farmer’s best mushrooms? Steal the barkeep’s best keg? You decide!
The Caravan Endures, by g3rmb0y.
The Caravan Endures is a collaborative TTRPG designed to focus on teamwork, planning, and communication skills. Set in a unique Western meets Fantasy world, it embodies the idea of gentle fantasy, encouraging players to find peaceful solutions to encounters rather than violence.
This is a Western-Fantasy style game, that encourages players to work together to achieve their goals. There are both individual and group dice rolls, depending on whether the group faces an encounter together or whether an individual takes responsibility for a specific action. Players can take the roles of different specialists, which act as classes or playbooks in that they provide each character with abilities and tools that they can use to solve problems. Since it’s expected that your players will look for non-violent solutions to problems, there’s less room for grittiness in this game than you might expect from something with a Western theme.
There’s also a Vision Accessible version of this game, for folks who use screen readers.
Chuubo’s Marvelous Wish-Granting Engine, by Jenna Moran.
The Chuubo’s Marvelous Wish-Granting Engine RPG is a diceless RPG from Jenna Katerin Moran. It’s a progressive, warm-hearted game that focuses on adventure and slice-of-life stories — think Laputa: Castle in the Sky or Kiki’s Delivery Service, but also Western stuff like Friendship is Magic, Harry Potter, and Adventure Time!
Pursue fabulous quests.
Progress through Issues.
And find a place for yourself in a world of breathtaking beauty.
Chuubo’s Marvelous Wish Granting Engine contains a sliding scale of genre, from pastoral slice-of-life to epic fantasy. The setting is inspired by Studio Ghibli movies, so if you like that gentle mode of storytelling, this is certainly worth checking out. One thing you might want to keep in mind in this game is that players benefit if they have a log of what happened throughout the game, whether it’s through written notes, or a list of messages on a noticeboard somewhere. There are a few supplements available for this game, such as Fortitude: by the Docks of Big Lake (which immerses you into the pastoral lakeside setting), The Glass-Maker's Dragon (a campaign set in Fortitude), and The Techno Player's Guide (a guide for the "Techno", or "goofy" style of play).
Pipedream, by Role Over, Play Dead.
PIPEDREAM is a #SWORDDREAM roleplaying game of detectives, problem-solving, and rural mysteries in a fantastic world; or a farcical drug comedy. You may play it as both.
The game is played as a conversation between a Referee and 1-4 Wisefellows (halfling detectives). The Referee describes the scenes and supporting characters, and presents problems and threats that players are faced with. The other players portray the Wisefellows and decide on their actions as they experience surprising adventures in the world of Irisfields.
This game is dangerous for the characters, but it it doesn’t take itself too seriously. While your characters will most likely get into trouble, the main goal first and foremost is to solve mysteries. If you like the idea of following clues to various strange places and odd answers, you might want to check out Pipedream!
Back Again from the Broken Land, by Cloven Pine Games.
You are small people who walked into a big war. The Doomslord’s forces were gathered in the Broken Land, and your fellowship unexpectedly played a key role in the Doomslord’s fall. Now, laden with stories to tell and burdens to bear, you set off on the journey home. But the Doomslord’s Hunters are still out there, and it’s a long way to walk... Back Again from the Broken Land.
Back Again from the Broken Land is a short Powered by the Apocalypse game of small adventurers sharing stories on a long walk home. It is meant to be played in one to three sessions. The game is inspired by the emotional, even bittersweet, stretches of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings.  The game is perfect for low-prep and no-prep one-shot gameplay, though you can also use it to play a short campaign of two to three sessions if you want to delve deeper into the characters' journeys. All you need to play are three six-sided dice, three-to-five players plus a GM, and a willingness to spin an emotional fantasy yarn together.
This game expects the scariest part of the adventure to already be over by the time you start play. It’s not about defeating evil, but instead, it’s about the characters connecting as they make their way home. If you want to bask in the beauty of a fantastical world without having to worry about defeating the big bad, this might be the game for you.
Ryuutama, by Atsuhiro Okada. (Found on Kotohi)
Ryuutama is a Japanese tabletop role-playing game, now translated into English. The original author is Atsuhiro Okada, a lifelong gamer who works in a “Tabletop Gaming Cafe” in Tokyo, the first of its kind in the country. He wrote this game to bring new people into tabletop role-playing, as well as to provide a heartwarming experience which other games at the time did not.
Ryuutama calls itself a “Natural Fantasy RPG”. It is a fantasy role-playing game set in a western medieval-style setting. The conceit of this setting is that at one point, in everyone’s lives, people get this intense feeling of wanderlust. They put their daily lives on hold and travel the world with new-found companions. They find out more about the world, and at the same time learn about themselves.
This game is built with the NPCs of regular fantasy games in mind. You are travellers, but you have a role such as merchant, healer, artisan or farmer. The primary source of fantasy is a half-dragon character controlled by the Game Master, called the Ryuujin. This character can provide the characters with magical solutions to problems - although the group is encouraged to prioritize problem solving over combat. This game encourages exploration more than fighting monsters, and while the magic might be a bit more prevalent than in a standard low-fantasy game, the reasons for using it might make it feel more simple and everyday.
Wise Women, by Alessandra Bookman.
Wise Women is tabletop roleplaying game in which the players take on the roles of witches living in a remote village, where life is difficult and people often fall prey to supernatural creatures.
The witches have the ability to use magical properties of plants to protect their community and help it prosper, but their skills are viewed with suspicion and prejudice. After all, magic is another supernatural force and the same plants that can heal, can also be used to cause harm.
Will the witches continue to strive to protect and improve their community, or will the prejudice drive them to lash out and turn to violence and Dark Magic?
Wise Woman is Powered by the Apocalypse, which is an excellent system for focusing on small, personal stories, with stakes that concern the player characters and their lives, but not the entire world. The characters in this game may not like each-other all the time, but they need each-other, or their magic will reveal them or, even worse, spiral out of control. If you like magic in your fantasy, but want to see a more down-to-earth and everyday use of it, Wise Women might be pointing you in the right direction.

With the insanity that Unity's recent decisions have caused, I, as an aspiring game dev/designer, am looking to see what else is available. We all know about RPG Maker, GameMaker Studio, Godot, and Unreal. But if you're like me and have little to no understanding of code and limited finances, here are alternative indie engines I've scrounged up:
Idle Game Maker, the one I'm currently working with, built by Orteil of Cookie Clicker fame
Bitsy, and an associated pixel art tool called Pixsy
Pocket Platformer, similar to Bitsy, and code-free
Rogue Engine- requires download, but apparently, there's a tutorial
GDevelop- both 2D and 3D engines, has tutorials, and even has an option to playtest games in development and provide feedback (I am definitely trying out this one in the near future)
Heaps.io-requires download, and this honestly looks a little over my head right now, but might be worth checking into when I get a better understanding of code
Stride- 3D games, requires download, has docs and instructions so you can learn quickly
Bevy- 2D games for browser and mobile
LibGDX- now we're getting into engines that can make REAL games, some of the games in their showcase are on Steam
Defold- according to their showcase, this was used to make that mobile game Family Island that you've seen in so many ads
Love- don't be fooled by the childish font on their home page, the games in their showcase look amazing
HaxeFlixel- apparently used to make Friday Night Funkin'???
Armory3D, which apparently uses Blender
Solar2D, and here's their showcase- looks decent enough
Solarus- I didn't recognize the name, but I know I've heard of this, I've seen Zelda fans use this one. You have to download their launcher to play the games on PC.
DOME, which uses its own programming language
FNA, which calls itself a "reimplementation of Microsoft XNA"- if you remember, XNA no longer exists, but Eric Barone used it for Stardew Valley. FNA has been used to make games like Rogue Legacy (it's a real game, I got it on Steam).
Monogame- a direct descendant of XNA, being used for Stardew Valley's updates, and used to make a whole host of other popular indie games including 2 of my favorites: Axiom Verge and Celeste (so yeah, I'm definitely checking into Monogame if it's still around by the time I learn C#)
RPG in a Box, which looks really blocky and rough, but appears to be a cheaper solution than RPG Maker, especially for those new to the field. I already paid for RPG Maker, so I don't know if I'll use this one, but I'm putting it here for anyone else who may want to try it.
Adventure Game Studio- not sure how difficult it will be to use, but I'm seeing some decent-looking games in their showcase
RPG Paper Maker, which, I guess, makes 3D games out of pixel art? Says it's free to use, but if you want to sell your game, you'll need to buy a license. Fair enough, I suppose.
Narrat, another one I am DEFINITELY going to try, at least while I'm still learning. Has its own, very simple, easy to read script that is a step above Idle Game Maker's script, but not quite as complicated as "real" programming languages. Make RPG's and put them on Itch.io.
Ren'Py, for visual novels (apparently Doki Doki was made with this!?!)
Decker, can be used for various kinds of applications, not much for game-making, but maybe with a little imagination....
Engine.lol- I'm, uh, not sure what this is, but could be good for generating ideas.
EbitEngine- describes itself as "dead simple," used to make Bear's Restaurant.
Raylib- no tutorials, no built-in assets, you MUST know how to code- but it looks like a no-frills engine if you do know how to code. I don't, so I won't be using it, but if you do, go right ahead.
PyGame, which apparently uses Python coding language.
And this article listed all these and a few more that I didn't list here because they looked too expensive or too complicated.
There's also a Pixel Game Maker on Steam. It's 90 bucks right now (ouch!) but if you can get it, it looks like it'll be worth it.

Hello, mind if I ask what main tools you use for your game? I do digital art and poked around CYOA/visual novel engines before, but have no experience making other types of interactive fiction. I'm considering RPG Maker, do you use it or something similar?
I'm using Adventure Game Studio, which is a freeware tool that's been around a loooong time for making point and click adventure games!
I think they're both similar in that they're engines that let you jump right into making a 2D game using a fairly simple user interface, but you can also take a deeper dive into coding to produce something more complex. I think the initial learning curve for AGS is perhaps a tiny bit steeper, but both are designed to be user-friendly to non-programmers.
They have a slightly different focus, with RPG Maker coming with built-in mechanisms for doing RPG elements like battling/leveling up and being based around tilesets, and AGS being geared up for various point and click UI elements like having inventories, objects and characters you interact with.
I hope that helps! I panicked about what game engine to use at the beginning (I thought perhaps I should learn Unity) and someone told me to go with whatever gets the job done, which I think has worked so far!

I'm gradually working my way to the finale of the prologue, refining the scenario a bit as I go. Artwork for two crucial scenes has been completed. The first is a path through the woods that plays host to the monster mob ambush event, and the second is the setting for the climactic encounter between August and his nemesis.
Unseen in these images are the simple animations that will give the scenery a little more life. The torches in the ambush scene include animated flames, and the moat around the logpile fort will also contain small animated ripples and waves. Soundscapes are still being used here to enhance the mis-en-scene, including bird sounds, wind and flickering flames for the torches.
Since I'm using parallax mapping with layers and custom collision mapping, it would be impractical to animate these effects using events or animations within RPG Maker MV's normal grids. As a result, I'm actually using Yanfly's Doodads plugin, which provides functionality for customising scenes during play-testing, using grid-free element placing. It's a super-powerful tool, and near-essential for anyone wanting to give their scenes a real sense of individuality - whether you're using a traditional tileset or not!
Stay tuned for a full prologue playthrough once the events have all been sequenced!

Future Addition Plans!
I'm making this because I'm bored and want to monitor my future plans!
Stamina system, functions like Legend of Zelda (alot of future plans will be like LoZ), can get more stamina with an unknown tool, currently no plan specifically for the stamina max limit thing.
Battle system like LoZ, simple and doesn't show in a different interface entirely like the standard rpg maker format as stated in the most recent update list.
Free moving. RPG maker has a gridded move system (1 tile=1 movement), but it's kinda bland, planning on using free movement but need to make diagonal sprites for such and find a way to make interactions semi-free movement as well (not making the sprite teleport in center like it was tiled)
Food buffs, like LoZ they got stamina adding foods, hearty foods, etc. I have a plan to overhaul the current foods list.
Cooking! Currently some ingredients are available to buy but as long as East Village isn't fully implemented, cooking/crafting won't be implemented as well, feature availability might move to North Village for fast access to be able to learn crafting.
Expanded areas for more fighting spaces. Currently there is just one and there were gonna be just 3 for each direction (north, South and East) but it's very small for the demo space and so the forests between the crossroads and villages will also include places for battles!
Have a good day, apologies for no updates the past few days!

[image ID: the first image is a gif of Gary, a man outlined in simple, animated red lines against a black background. the only other color is the white of his eyes. he has a short beard and he's wearing a hooded robe. the second image is of Granger, a girl with green eyes and short, wavy or curly black hair. in her hair is a red hat or ribbon. she's wearing a black turtleneck sweater, blue overalls, and a green coat. end ID]
Gary
I've seen John in ONE poll but I haven't seen Gary at all. Gary is the main antagonist in the games and is a normal human being just like you and me. Actually he's a demon, and trying to summon the antichrist. He can also summon spiders! Over and over again. And remember, Gary loves you! [additional propaganda 1] [additional propaganda 2]
Granger
so granger is the main character of the indie game "NeverHome" Chapter one, which is only $1 on Steam, is called NeverHome: Hall of Apathy. if ur a fan of young protags being put in RPG maker horror games, then this is the game for you!! so granger is just that… she wakes up to find herself in a strange, hostile world. she, along with the friends she makes, must solve the various puzzles before them while creatures are out to kill them… and along the way they can uncover the secrets of these never ending halls… her dynamics with the cast is also super fun… each character gets their moment or moments with granger. and what's so cute is that there's unique art for each pair that highlights the fact you cant get through these halls alone!! she also has her own theme song!! here!! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d_vwtmIj5cw it's called cyclical tragedy AND HERE IS AN ANALYSIS OF THE THEME!!
