Tommy and Carol knew each other first.

They were in the same pre-school class but they weren’t friends. In fact, they didn’t like each other much until Steve befriended Carol a couple weeks into kindergarten.

Carol is sitting on a bench outside the school, watching the after-school traffic slowly disappear when Steve walks up to her. He points to the orange and white plush cat she has clutches to her chest and asks, “Who’s that?”

“This is Mr. Whiskers,” She answers. “He’s my best friend.”

“My best friend is Tommy,” Steve tells her, sitting on the bench next to her. “How come you’re allowed to have toys in class? My mama said I can’t bring toys to school.”

“Mr Whiskers isn’t a toy,” She scoffs, squeezing the cat closer. “My daddy says he’s a good luck charm and Miss Bailey says I can have him ‘cause my daddy is away. He’s in the Navy and I miss him.”

“My dad is in San Fran-fisco,” Steve nods. “I miss him too.”

They sit in silence for a bit, Carol kicking her legs out in front of her. Steve squints at the parking lot before asking, “Why are you still here?”

“My big sister picks me up but she’s trying out for the cheer team so I got to wait for Mommy,” Carol tells him. “She works at the Red Cross. That’s far away. Where’s your mommy?”

“Oh, Mama is with Dad,” Steve tells her. “She doesn’t have a job but sometimes she goes with Dad ‘cause his eyes wander off without her super-vision.”

Carol’s eyes go wide, “His eyes fall out!?”

“Yeah,” Steve stresses, leaning in and whispering a secret, “One time I saw Dad take his eyes out and put them in a case on his nightstand.”

“Whoa.”

“I know,” Steve nods. “Sometimes I think he’s from Star Trek but Mama says he isn’t.”

Carol tilts her head, realizes something, and then frowns, “But who is gonna pick you up?”

“I’m gonna walk home,” He says proudly. “I’m big. Mama says I’m allowed ‘cause I know the way.”

“Then why are you still here?”

“Cause you are.”
