Danger Zone 逆局 (2021) - Whump List

Synopsis: A series of despicable crimes in the city of Donglin leaves a team of police officers, lead by Tan Chong Hui (on the left), in a dead end. Among them, the young cop Ren Fei (on the right), dealing with the trauma of his mother's death, is contacted by a prisonner, Liang Yan Dong (in the center) who might have meaningful insight on the case. Wrongfully accused of assault and murder attempt, Liang Yan Dong hopes that this collaboration will allow him to clear his name and bring justice to the victim.

Notes: It was devided into two "chapters", so it's sometimes referred as one season with 24 episodes, and sometimes as two seasons of 12 episodes. Personaly, I think the second half is way less fun that the first one, but the 2nd half's ending credit is fire.

NB: Timestamps might be off (< 1mn) depending on where you watch the show. I do not disclose any character’s death on purpose. The characters are listed by chronological order of whump in each episode.

Think you’ll ever do a review of Arcane? If you have seen the whole series, what are your basic thoughts on it?

OH HELL YEAH IM WRITING A REVIEW FOR IT AS WE SPEAK

Uhhhhh,,, oh man I'm gonna ramble SOOOoo much about this show it's my most favorite show of all time.

Season 1 is super solid, LOVE the character arcs and build up, they are INCREDIBLE. The animation is solid, the storyline set up is full of hype, the butterfly effect is very prominent in the story telling and I love me a good action packed story heavy series surrounding politics. Boy howdy does this show give us depthy characters, I'm LOVIN it! Season 2 arc 1 is also pretty solid.

Arc 2, ep 4,5,6 however.... they have some interesting ideas but are otherwise a complete and total mess. Our entire cast straight up disappears from the plot, rushed to all hell (we needed a season 3 SOOooo badly) Every single member of our main cast has contradicted themselves, often within the same episode. The narrator is unreliable.

The final arc of season 2 picked things back up, and while its not perfect by any means, it was breathtakingly unexpected. I enjoyed so much of it. I feel like our characters had good wrap ups, I just hate how we got here. One could argue the show also ship pandered the ending quite a bit and I'm not gonna disagree, I hate to say that was ironically the best part for me.

I was actually mentally, physically, and emotionally unwell for an ENTIRE week after the finale. I stayed up all night watching it. I've never seen a show pull something so insane in my life. I was astounded. I don't think anyone could have predicted how things would have ended up. If Arcane had a season 3 to actually sit down and give more time to explore the ideas they shoved into season 2, I feel like people would be less divided on it. Despite my disappointment for season 2, I still think this show is very good and would recommend it to everyone, even my own mom, ahahaha. ~ Spoilers below for an overall issue I have with Arcane, for both seasons. A really annoying pet peeve of mine

The writers have a problem with plot devices. There has been one per season and they're not good. Sky Young and Isha. They're used to rush a character to the next step in their arc. My personal belief is that these two are wasteful. They only exist for a member of our main cast. They are not their own characters or have any legit relevance to the overall story.

Sky Young is there as a symbol of Viktor's 'humanity' even when the methods of her death or how she's used in the story don't make any sense down the line. She's just an 'obsessed' one-sided love interest that forces Viktor into giving up on the Hexcore- to give up on Piltover and Jayce. Only for him to drop/kill her a SECOND time in season 2 regardless of his initial guilt and distress over "losing" her.

Isha is used to force Jinx to live up to a symbol of rebellion against Piltover, as well as be Jinx's "redemption arc" (she didn't NEED one??? wtf) morality pet, as well as force Jinx into a situation where she'd consider unaliving herself so Ekko can come in and save her.

I am so annoyed with how these characters were handled. Sky should have been more than a lab assistant crushing on Viktor, and Isha should have been more than Jinx's redemption arc morality pet. It's shocking we have such flat plot devices in a show with such insanely depthy characters- especially the other women! I'll talk more about them in my video, but any time I see them on screen, I just want to skip over them.

Doing my usual rewatches of the first two seasons of DiP (I literally watch both of them or an ep once a week, at least, I WISH I WAS JOKING) and I started internalizing this little detail in the premiere of season 2, when they're investigating the plantation murder during Erzulie week etc. It's, on the surface just this silly moment of Richard collapsing into a chair and putting a damp towel over his face

HOWEVER, this time I actually took note of the fact that 1) he's not wearing his suit jacket for what I think is the FIRST time in the station, there may have been an exception or two in the first season but I don't think so, he keeps it on like armor at all times no matter how hot it is. 2) he's not even sitting his own desk as he so normally would have in season one, he just plops down into Camille's seat without a second thought from either her or him, despite seating arrangements being a bit of an issue for him in the first season.

And then later, when he has an epiphany about the trap door, he's so wrapped up in it that he just...initially forgets said jacket AND his briefcase, the two things he usually clings to. He does turn back to get them (from Camille, who had waited by them in anticipation that he would remember) but then doesn't even waste time to put the jacket on before running out the door again lol

The point is, I think, that through these masterfully little, seemingly inconsequential details, we're starting to see Richard really acclimate and find comfort in his 'new' surroundings. If the suit jacket is part of his 'armor' that he wore regardless of how hot it was or his own personal comfort (which I think psychologically it is for him, still tying him to England and what he knows) then it says a great deal that Richard would finally be in a place to shuck it off without really thinking about it, that he's grown so comfortable with and trusting of Fidel, Dwayne and Camille that he wouldn't feel that subconscious impulse to keep it on at all times. Notice though, that it all DOES go back on when he's facing suspects he doesn't know.

And then there's Camille's chair. Again, it's not a big deal or anything anyone even notices in the actual scene, but it's a far cry for me from season one where he always made a point to sit at his OWN desk, in his OWN chair at all times, somewhat cut off and isolated from the rest of the group. Not here though. He sits in someone else's chair (again, without really thinking about it) in such a position that he's immersed in the main group while they discuss the case.

I can't help but wonder how this could have been taken further, if Richard had been on the show longer and they had kept up with this kind of subtle signaling. Maybe over time we'd see him regularly start to roll up his sleeves, even take off his tie and loosen his collar while working on cases at the station. Maybe even at some point, many seasons later, he starts slowly transitioning to more breathable Caribbean clothes, piece by piece. Maybe after a time a short sleeved, button down breathable shirt that resembles his English uniform, for instance. Pleated, but breathable khaki-colored trousers, maybe. (Could we get him to sandals?? Idk about that one but maybe lol)

It's honestly so sweet to me, to watch this very guarded character begin to unconsciously dismantle his own metaphorical walls in ways he never would have been able to even back home in England, and I think the fact that these moments ARE so subtle and go pretty much unnoticed by the main characters is what makes them significant and capable of happening. No one even thinks to remark on it, because it's just the natural thing to happen. It's where he's meant to be, one might say.

Supernatural S.5 Ep.3 - Free to be You and Me - Liveblog

The past two episodes of Supernatural have been emotionally hard to get through, and today was kind of a rough day for me since I forgot my meds, so let's see how terrible this episode is for my mental health.

Also, judging by the summary of the episode, it appears that my inference of the archangel that attacked Castiel being Raphael/Israfil was in fact correct, which makes me very happy. I love when I can correctly guess things.

Now to the episode!

Opening on Sam seeing visions of Jess... My jaw actually kind of dropped, I looked just like Sam for a second there. Jess, I miss you. You and Sam were such a power couple, I miss you and I want you back. Why do I have a feeling that Jess is actually Lucifer though, similar to how Lucifer in the last episode came in the form of Sarah. I'm probably wrong, but either way would not surprise me. I'm happy to see Jess even if it's like this, because I love her and she deserved better. Samjess, you will always be famous to me.

The way Sam talks about himself makes me so sad... And now Jess blaming him? She would never, she loves him too much. Don't do this to me, Supernatural show writers, don't do this to me.

Is Sam condemning himself to a life of loneliness here? I think he is.

WOah I like that scene change with the door of the car with Sam switching to the trunk of the car with Dean, that was cool to see! I like shots like that!

Sam burning all of his fake IDs, part of his connection to hunting and to working with Dean- I hate this I hate this-

The escape from hunting he always wanted, but he doesn't get it how he wanted. Or how he deserved. He's with Jessica, but not in a good way.

I'm absolutely loving the cinematography in this opening scene and the parallels of Sam and Dean. I praise highly.

Average Castiel jumpscare. Average Castiel lack of personal space. He's just like me fr.

Sam fighting the urge to call Dean... I hate this, I hate them being apart.

I've talked a lot about how this show makes me think about my sister, and seeing Sam and Dean separated makes me miss her a lot. I saw her on facetime today but it's not the same as seeing her in person. She's my best friend, I hate not being able to talk to her (which sucks because she ignores my texts sometimes). Maybe I'm just a sap.

Cas I think we should talk about your willingness to die...

"1) Bert and Ernie are gay 2) You are not gonna die a virgin" Oh Dean Winchester, the man you are.

Castiel looks so uncomfortable and man, do I feel him. I too, sitting here watching this, am uncomfortable. Cas' face in this scene- I can't- The way he walks away like a scolded child-

CASTIEL YOU CAN'T JUST S A Y THAT TO SOMEONE-

Oh I love Lindsey- She seems so sweet and like she really cares about Sam. And she's giving him advice he needs to hear.

The look in Raphael's eyes and in his face. It's incredibly unnerving, kudos to the actor.

God is not dead. I don't believe that for a second. He's definitely walking on Earth among people, if the angels think he's dead.

The way Raphael is talking about God creates parallels in my head to what happened with John in season 1... I can't fully explain it though.

Poor Castiel, the internal struggle with his faith can only be increasing now.

"Today you're my little bitch" oh I'm so proud. I feel like a proud father.

I looked up the actor for Raphael because I wanted to know his name. Demore Barnes, you have one of the most incredible voices I have ever heard, I love it.

The hunters are trying for force feed Sam blood? What the fuck- No no no no no no no this isn't okay I am wildly uncomfortable fuck. Okay. I need to take a second. I have to take a break. I can't watch this.

Alright. I stepped away for a few minutes to gather myself. This show has so many cases of assault or removal of autonomy when it comes to the Winchesters, and it's hard to watch. It also doesn't get discussed enough, because it's serious.

Is Sam going to kill the hunters? I mean I wouldn't blame him, but he really shouldn't. Seems he knows that too. Or Lindsey was able to pull him out of it.

DEAN BRINGING UP JOHN- WHAT DID I SAY- WHAT DID I SAY-

"Especially without my brother" oh. um. The shit Dean is saying, it's actually hard to breath. I can't believe what I'm hearing honestly. This is good for Dean though. He needs to learn to live for himself and live alone.

Sam talking to Jess is Sam talking to himself and FUCK I WAS RIGHT. WHAT DID I SAY? GO TO THE TOP OF THE POST WHAT DID I SAY!

Dude. What have I BEEN SAYING? SINCE LIKE SEASON 2/3? SAM IS MEANT TO BE A VESSEL OF LUCIFER! I WAS RIGHT! It's so interesting how Sam is Lucifer's vessel and Dean is Michael's anyway I WAS RIGHT I'M SO PROUD OF MYSELF I FEEL SO SMART.

I have so many feelings about Sam rn. I have so many feelings in general I don't even know what to say.

ok first of all congrats on step 1 of your ship but second of all as someone who has never watched but wants to catch up with no time to watch seven seasons: best meta to read first? when exactly do both characters start appearing on the show? If it’s later than s1 I may be able to watch enough of it. But yea most importantly where to start with meta for the ship and has anyone done a primer for the ship I could read? Thank you so much for the congrats! XD It's a delight to have been screaming, "Buck is bisexual!" since ep 107 and get to 704, and get it confirmed as canon. ^u^

Well, I guess the good news for you is that Eddie doesn't appear in s1, so if you're less interested in seeing the shown when it was only featuring Buck out of the ship, then go ahead and skip that. I do think it matters to see that season, to better understand Buck's journey, and also why Eddie was such an important and positive person in his life once they became friends (plus s1 is just 10 eps), but if you're more inclined to skipping, Eddie shows up in 201.

As for meta, I didn't sit down to write anything until the end of both s2 and the first half of s3, by which point I felt like I would explode if I didn't. So, that meta was more summarized than my weekly Buddie meta posts I started doing starting in the second part of s3. And you can probably just... skim through that first round of Buddie meta (it looks like it has a lot of parts, but some are quite short) and my other buddie meta posts (which you can find through my pinned post) to get a good idea of the Buddie r/s overall.

Honestly, the big moments that really cemented things, are the beginning of Buddie, in the first few eps of s2, ep 210 which gives us our first glimpse of Buck and Eddie being co-parents to Chris, 218 where you see how much they've come to mean to each other already, the start of s3, 309 and THE kitchen scene (don't ask, but it will be THE kitchen scene for you as well, once you've watched it), the end of s4 and the shooting storyline, s5's best Buddie moments were IMO in 504, 506, 513 and 514, s6 was a bit of a mess, but eps 610 to 612 or so are probably the vital ones. So if you're interested, you can check out the weekly meta posts for those specific eps.

One last time

The bad batch s3 ep 15 spoilers

I am not okay.

Kids survived, some clones survived, tha batch survived What more could we ask for? Well i know Tech. I wanted Tech to return why couldn't he return. Why give us hope why? They convinced us cx2 is someone important and i believed he was tech. But no they just gave hope for nothing.

Ending caught me off guard. I thought someone was going to die i think everyone thought someone would ünd maybe even everyone dies. They survived all them i am glad by this its great.

I cried a lot. When they mentioned Tech i couldn't keep it together.

I am still sad. Ending was great we have everything we ever wanted except Tech.

Hemlock died, rampart died. Nala Se was good. Emerie helped the batch and now she and echo going to help clone underground(hopefully we will get a clone underground show with this artstyle). Everyone and everything is good again except tech i can't stop thinking the fact that they didn't bring hil back why???

If he doesn't have a hand to tremble, there is no trembling problem. They actually did that.

Echo is proud of Omega, hunter wrecker and crosshair knew right away zillo was omega's work.

I thought wrecker was going to die when he echo asked where Hunter and Crosshair are.

The hug omega gave Hunter and Crosshair, the scene where all the batch (except echo and tech of course) sitting in peace so beautiful.

Clone x troopers there are 4 of them. When i was watching i thought they might have been developed with special mutations like bad batch's. But this is not true probably one of those clone looked like a reg. They are all probably reg but how can they fight so good?

Btw I didn't think for even 1 second that the clones wouldn't help rescue their brothers. I like clones, their personality (and their voice ofc) is perfect.

I hope Crosshair knows tech wanted to save him(they must have told him right?). I wish Tech could've see crosshair's character development his story. I wish no could've knew he joined them. I wish... Tech was alive. They didn't bring him back but how could he be dea i still can't belive and now while writing this i am thinking why can't he still be alive maybe i am being so delusional but they didn't confirmed he is dead if there is no body then there is no death, right? Since the end of season 2 we assumed he was alive but they didn't do anything different in this episode than the whole season to prove he is dead. But we still believed he was alive why cant we still believe he is alive the show ended yes but maybe in the future they will make a clone underground show and maybe tech will return. He probably wouldn't return but i refuse to believe he is dead i will believe he is alive untul they prove he is dead but they probably wouldn't prove it. So in my mind tech will be alive and i don't care if i am being too delusional. 🤷🏻‍♀️

When i see older omega first i thought she became a liberater of ancient wonders but this ending made so much more sense. Omega left without saying goodbye to crosshair and wrecker. But Hunter and omega's conversation was beautiful. I think they made that place like a museum?

Crosshair and hunter together killed hemlock, they saved omega together, they believed omega, they believed eachother and themselves. That scene was perfect.

Everything went well, we got a better ending what i expected. But tech...

No matter how much we want some stories doesn't have a happy ending this is what i think about even though we have happy ending i will never forget how tech sacrificed himself for his family. in the end they didn't waste his sacrifice in s2 finale and they did what they were going to do before hemlock captured omega in s2. They lived a peaceful life in pabu they retired.

I keep coming back to the same thing, i know but i can't help it. Tech tech tech... Heroic tech.

I've written too many things too mixed up. But if you've read this far, thank you. And I'm so glad I can be a part of this adventure. I started by writing my thoughts about star wars on Tumblr. Vox's death - personal headcanons/rambles

A/N I've been sitting on this for a while HDHDH

A lot of this is building on prior headcanons of mine and shots in the dark based on vibes so yeah - I could be completely wrong in season 2 and thus I will eat my hat if that's the case /lh

Just wanted to throw my thoughts out there on this 🙏

CW: SFW, murder, mentions of suicide/mental breakdown, references to staticmoth, angst

In my personal opinion Vox didn't die from a TV falling on his head: he died from poisoning.

The first thing that differs from a lotta stuff I keep seeing is that I don't think the red lines that come from Vox's mouth are actually Val's saliva from kissing him.

In some scenes, it probably is (like in the poison music vid) but when he's very obviously done with Val's bs during the off periods in their relationship that they go through? Nah.

It just wouldn't make sense that it's always from Val. Especially when we have examples like the beginning of episode 8. It just starts seeping from his mouth as he's saying the "I can't wait to watch you get fucked" line.

They show up whenever he's more unstable (like in Stayed Gone) and/or when he's having a sadistic power high (ep 8 ) and is particularly out of his mind.

I think it's symbolic of actually being blood from being poisoned in an instance when he was like that in his life.

Actually getting into it: The leadup to his death

Regardless of how it happened exactly, imo in the end every single one of his relationships while he was alive broke down in the height of his popularity.

He became more and more insufferable to keep around: constantly egotistical and looking down on everyone the more famous and powerful he grew, and became utterly obsessed with maintaining his power. (Also what he's doing in hell - fixated at all times on appearing a certain way and staying at the top)

His mental state declined terribly as he grew paranoid that he would lose his control and have to start from where he was (which wasn't good to say the least), and all of his friends and family left due to how he treated them which only added to his instability due to having no support system.

Not that it would have changed much because yeesh.

The second someone would try to reality check him (if they did) during this time, it only would have made him even more unstable.

He most likely believed that stepping on everyone to maintain his power was more important than anything, and meeting someone who disagreed, he would have just discarded them without a second thought, all the while internalising it deep down to be brought back up whenever he finally crashed.

His actual death

I have two main headcanons of how the poisoning may have gone:

1. The first main one is that he was murdered.

He treated his staff so badly during his gradually worsening mental decline that one (or maybe more) got so fed up by his poor treatment of them that his morning coffee was poisoned, and while on air he started spitting up blood and then died (hence why his head is a TV).

This one makes particular sense to me because the red lines show up when he's being a sadistic asshole - as he would have been leading up to his murder.

2. The second: he poisoned himself on purpose as suicide.

His mental state declined so much, so stuck in his delusions of grandeur that when he was either reality checked and it actually took hold of him or his content started performing badly in comparison to someone else's he experienced the inevitable crash after having a high in that way and had a full on breakdown (or both tbh).

Him taking a stance of 'I'd rather die now while eyes are still on me then when they're all gone again and my existence is unknown once again'.

I think it's far likelier the former, though considering everything.

I am probably reading too damn much into all this but like... the brainrot is all-consuming.

I want to write a fic about his death at some point but like.. I don't think anyone would gaf enough to read it for one, and I also have a bunch of stuff I'm already working on that my brain is buffering about/lh

I'm thinking about how bad he's probably gonna be done in season 2 and slightly dying inside. I HOPE I'm proved wrong so desperately bc I love him too damn much.

Either way I do NOT think there is enough time to properly explore his chara even if Viv wanted to dip into the interesting asf things under the surface. 🗿

i never seen much about squid game on this app but im watching the second season now (NO SPOILERS IM LITERALLY ON SECOND EPISODE PLEASE) (this does not apply for my post rn, this has 1-2 ep spoilers)

but the show has created a simulation in SUCH an immersive way that borders hyperreality lowkey i literally gotta pause the show and just sit there staring for a second

a lot of media texts try to be immersive now, it helps to keep the audience's interest and is overall much more impactful that way, especially when its relatable, not just realistic.

here, the second season is set in 2024, late 2024 at that, this is our timeline. this was "happening" a few weeks ago. it isn't the past, it isn't the future, it's the present. that already is quite immersive and quite chilling tbh, it makes the audience question how fictional it is in the first place, as a joke maybe think ahahaha what if that was happening right now actually that would be crazy. especially that the show already reflects our world almost perfectly by fashion, pop culture, social issues, people's lifestyles, etc, its the same world just with a twist of "what if there was a secret organisation creating a reality show where players get killed for losing for the rich to enjoy !" so there's that part of immersion, chilling, its familiar, it is set in our timeline. simulation, quite hyperreal but we aren't quite there yet.

now, another thing to note, when the show came out, people got obsessed with it, it became mainstream, people dressed up as the soldiers, frontman, the players, literally anything for halloween. this happened in real life and its normal and expected, people dressed up as a show that they liked and was big that year. when you saw those people you would just think about the fact that they saw the show, they aren't real staff that work for a very illegal game competition that is used as a tv reality show for the rich. that is already happening in the world in a diff way but that's a conversation for another day and plus that metaphor and connection has prob been talked over so many times since the release

but. the same thing happens in the show. gihun gets an invite to the club to meet the frontman ON HALLOWEEN. in the show that makes perfect sense, it lets the squid game staff keep their identities hidden under the pretense of being dressed up for halloween. but to us, to the audience (at least me) its SO much more impactful and so much creepier because we know them, we know who they are. and we saw this in OUR OWN LIVES. PEOPLE DRESSED UP AS SQUID GAME AND NOW THERE IS A SCENE WHERE DURING HALLOWEEN, THE SQUID GAME STAFF IS "DRESSED UP" AS SQUID GAME. THEMSELVES.

a squid game show doesn't exist IN the show's world, no one knows how they look like or anything, the civilians in the show see them and just think "oh weird costumes, must be from a show ive never heard of". but to us, it exists, as a show. i literally don't know how to fucking explain this but that's SUCH a weird parallel and it was creepily immersive and felt like a deja vu to see the staff walk through the crowd, just like we saw in real life.

I've never seen a piece of media take a reference from life and implement it like this ????????? or at least don't remember anything similar,, it was a very weird immersion. it isn't a hyperreality per say because we have the original (our world) to link reference, but that has merged the two realities, ours and the show's into one reality SO realistically for a second. In our world, people were wearing those constumes before 2024 and seeing that in 2024 just created a link between the years and even tho in the timeline of the show, people wearing those costumes didn't happen before their 2024, IT HAPPENED FOR US! WE HAVE SEEN IT BEFORE! OUTSIDE THE SHOW AND NOW IT HAPPENED IN THE SHOW. IT LINKED THE TWO DIFFERENT REALITIES AND MADE THE SHOW SHOWS REALITY DANGEROUSLY CLOSE TO A HYPERREALITY

maybe i am making this to be much more impactful than it actually is but i wanted to say it GRAH

okay okay okay so i finally got to sit and watch the full ep (8x13) in its entirety with no distractions after watching it once split in half, and i have a few thoughts (nothing bad so don’t worry just a few notes i had written here and there while watching!!)

- while i like the fact that they gave a little focus to hen in this ep, i wish her feeling invisible would have stemmed more from something a little more realistic than people she’s known for so much of her life just seemingly forgetting her birthday out of nowhere- it felt odd that they’ve all known her and been family to her for years not remembering (although perhaps im just infusing my own philosophy on my friends’ birthdays where i intentionally set up reminders way ahead of time so i can plan something accordingly but i digress) it would have made more sense if they wanted this forgotten birthday plotline to center it more around ravi and showcase his struggles with trying to fit in with the group (also calling back to being called eddie in 8x11) and could serve as a way for him to really solidify his place as one of the mains giving him the flashy plot point of talking down archie on the bus- that being said, if they wanted the ep to be focused on hen (which i am so so so so so glad we got a henisode after so long) i feel like it should have been less about people forgetting her birthday, painting everyone else ss lowkey dicks, and more of playing on the fact thst she kinda has been pushed to the side narratively since ep 4/5 of s8 BUT i didn’t hate the plotline just thought it could have been reworked

- i already talked more at length in that 1 am ramble i went on about the set dressing of eddie’s el paso house, but i do love just how out of place eddie’s furniture looks in that house and not in a “he’s still settling in way” but genuinely in a “this stuff doesn’t belong here way” that really solidifies the run down house’s role of reflecting his relationship with his parents and texas as a whole- attempting to settle back into that dynamic but he’s a new person and he will never fit into the old dilapidated conventions he grew up in no matter how hard he tries- to me this felt a little bit more of a subtly effective move on the show rather than the blatant “oh the house is falling apart haha” funny bit in ep 12… not that that bit didn’t work for its purpose in that episode as a funny cutaway during the job interview but i feel like the symbolism of the furniture being so put of place, and also showing eddie trying to fix a cabinet while on facetime w buck- in essence “trying to fix his relationship w his family”- was a much more solid metaphorical statement of where eddie’s at in these episodes

- (this was something i wrote down the first time i watched it but i thought it was funny) does the show know texas? bc i don’t think the show knows texas…

- a single day chess tournament in a town 5 hours away with no intention of having the kids stay overnight is so funny to me they were really gonna make those kids ride a bus for 10 whole hours that day with a random chess tournament in between

- mara <3 (that’s it, that’s the note)

- i miss the athena and hen bestieism from earlier seasons and im so glad we got it back for a second this ep

- again, i already spoke at length about my thoughts on eddie’s speech to his mother snd how i thought it was much more of a gut punch to her than him yelling at her so no notes there

- my one disappointment is the way they chise to have eddie say (paraphrasing) “i’m gonna start acting like [a dad]”… i know this can be read as eddie having never thought of himself as a good father, but i feel like his emotional journey in the episode was being framed as “no- i am a good dad, and i always have been” (which is why buck told him he needed to dad-up because the only time he hadn’t been was while chris was gone) and instead that line switched the message of the arc to “i need time start acting like a dad now” which isn’t true? because eddie’s entire character up to this point has been that he ONLY views himself as a dad, and we’ve had all these interviews and conversations detailing “he needs to learn who he is aside from being chris’s dad” and we haven’t seen any of that, and that line feels to me like they’re saying “nope- all he needs to be is a dad.” and… yes, of course being a dad is VERY important to him and should not be sacrificed, but i wish the writers had made the choice to just leave it at:

chris: you’ll be my dad again?

eddie: i’ve always been your dad

rather than tacking on the “now its time for me to act like one” because then that would tell the audience “okay, yes, he’s acknowledging that he’s christopher’s dad and he always has been, but he’s accepting that the time apart has at least started a journey to finding himself as a whole” but instead it kinda…. closed that door (im NOT saying that eddie’s self identity won’t be explored in some way down the line, i just feel like this was an odd writing choice that didn’t really match what the episode was trying to convey for eddie and chris’s relationship but it was written by taylor wong so i’m not expecting masterclass level writing in any way shape or form from her 💀)

anyway, as a whole i really did enjoy the episode- 12 and 13 (and to an extent 11 but i detest that episode on fundamentally different conditions) both really felt more in line with what i loved about earlier seasons of the show and fit the kind of episode formula that made me love the show initially so it was refreshing to see that after 8a was kind of a whole lot of nothing salad and then 8b started with DRAMA DRAMA DRAMA and is about to continue the DRAMA DRAMA DRAMA that i wish would be a bit more spread out than it has been this season and last. these two episodes have been a nice treat and i absolutely hate that i wasn’t able to watch them live because of various reasons but i still enjoyed them even after the fact going in with a baseline knowledge of what happened in both of them. (and also i was VERY pleasantly surprised w the writing of ep 12 considering it was written by two LS writers who don’t know these characters- somehow they had a better understanding of them than other certain writers who have written for the main show do after years of writing for them 💀 BUT I DIGRESS)

**ofc this is all my own opinion and i know others may disagree with me but i feel like im always so hard on this show and its often… okayish writing choices and i wanted to actually take a moment to say something constructive about an episode i did really like as a whole**

Thurs - Maho Girls Precure! - Ep 7 - 10

In the attempt to catch up, it's another brief speed run ep review ^^"

Ep 7

Side characters shouldn't be that pretty if they are just going to be throw away background characters...

Any way, the odd rush continues and another stone is found, what are the writers doing in the second half with so much crammed into what would be the equivalent of an opening arc?

Animation wise it looked nice but so far, this may be the dumbest name of an attack so far. (And that's saying something, makes no sense Spicy is already a contender) And that was it, nothing much actually happened. It's all been quite copy and paste since ep 1.

Ep 8

This ep starts of slightly better as you get to see the antics of this little group once more and they do bounce off each other well. Even Emily's drawback could have made for a nice little arc if we were with them for longer.

So basically a Venus fly trap? Quite the deception by the writers, it was setting it up to be something really scary but then it turned out to be utterly harmless. Could have had the villains take the week off.

But nothing of note happens, they find yet another stone, this time a support, befriend and heal a baby Pegasus and completed the task of the day.

However, it was nice that Liko used Mirai's trick from before and Mirai pretty much pushed the teachers message from the start of the ep to get the job done. Little nods and throwbacks that make eps go full circle can be nice when done right.

Ep 9

Nevermind Liko and Mirai, this was a great little ep delving more into this trio who we may or may not ever see again. If this is really it, talk about a waste?

Liko is the only one who ever sits on her broom like that? Wonder why?

And for a mere 9 eps, that's quite the escalation on things, if this was a mid-season issue, sure, it would make a whole lot more sense, this level of separation anxiety seems too early.

Ep 10

Plus side, it was a curve ball, just when you thought they wouldn't possibly make it that simple; huzzah, they didn't and the chase continues even when the ep ends!

This just gives 8th Digivice vibes from 01, just swap it out for Wizardmon and day or night and bam, same scene. Crows and their shiny things and here I thought it was more Magpies but I guess they may not have those over there?

Meanwhile Precure, writing out parents since Futari wa, I've only been watching the 6 so far and it unreal how often this comes up already...

2 + 2 almost made 4, so close to making that connection.

Wait, does that mean the Grandma didn't pass the message on or she wanted a phone call for just a personal update to? Did the Grandma forget and let her worry before letting it slip? What is the implication here?

And to wrap it all up, a Mary Poppins impression? Wonder what she is doing back or why?

I just don't know what it is about this, the characters seem ok, there's nothing wrong with Mirai and Liko, maybe the pacing? It's all so mid, it isn't bad but it isn't good either, it has parts and moments but overall I just can't get seem to get into it. If anything, take the Precure side out and have this as a slice of life, two world show and it'd be just as effective. Nothing would really change.

Heck, our big bad has an amazing villain design, I hope there isn't some underwhelming big reveal near the end that ruins the presence he's been giving so far and it goes to waste.

Character thoughts

Mulder: I loved his determination (for the most part) and his dedication to his sister. I love that he never really cared what anyone else thought of his outlandish theories and suggestions. I love how down-bad this poor meow-meow of a man was for his partner before they even met (memorizing and quoting her senior thesis?!?!). I didn’t love that every other season he’d go through this thing of like ignoring/ shaming Scully for not believing in everything he believed in, only to be reminded by someone else how much she did for him and that she actually put up with a lot!! It overall, fine character.

Scully: My love! My baby girl! I still am begging for a chance!! I will say that I loved her evolution from complete denial to being the one to suggest and revel in the paranormal and unexplained. I like that her curiosity is what often drove her to go along with Mulder’s crazy (but usually correct) explanations. She WANTED the truth too, whether she knew it or not. Whether she believed it or not. What else can I say? I love her sm 🩷🩷🩷

Skinner: Every season I had such high hopes for him, and every season he kind of let me down. In S11, Scully remarks that he’s a man guided strongly by his moral compass, but it seems like that compass is all over the place, and I wish he would have been written to be stronger in his convictions, and not let people like CSM and the Syndicate always guide his actions. I wish he would have told Mulder and Scully that he was being controlled for half the seasons by Krycek, because you know they would have done something about it.

Reyes: I really liked her character!! She was fun and a good addition to both Scully and Doggett’s character arcs. I’m going to forget about her post s9 arc though, tbh. (Also low key I crack-shipped her with Scully in s8/9 don’t come 4 me)

Doggett: He was there. Idk.

Other thoughts

Over all, I really enjoyed it. Seasons 1-7 and the first movie will hold a very special place in my heart. They were fun and campy and gave me a nostalgic vibe somehow?? Just very special to me now. Seasons 8/9 I didn’t love as much, but both still had some moments that I really enjoyed. I liked seeing the various relationships evolve from distrust to friendship and partnership- both platonic and romantic. I’m a sucker for romance though, so it was a given that I’d be insane for MSR from day one.

There were certain episodes from S10 and S11 definitely captured that early spark, and though it wasn’t my favourite, they each had their moments that I treasure. I wish the last two seasons would have just been back to fun, campy cases because they did those eps really well, and have had maybe one alien- related ep a season. Maybe even had them reconnect with their son in a normal way 😔

Now about the baby arc, if they insisted on continuing it in S10/11, I think they should have just completed it in S10 (and not just have dropped it like what????). I don’t know, had the parents killed while Scully was looking for William to save Mulder. Have the prophecy been fulfilled in S10 instead of dragging it on, and then S11 could have been them domestically raising a teenaged William, trying to find their places as long lost parents. Have them learn how to cope with the fact that they lost 15 years while also learning to cherish their second chance. Blah blah blah. That’s probably the headcanon I’m gonna go with lol.

Overall I’m glad that I gave this show a go! It had been sitting in my brain as a potential watch for at least 8 years lmao. Special thanks to poor Emily (@ daynascullys) for tolerating my madness in her messages, but in all fairness- she caused this. The blame is all on her tbh.

Some of my notes from season 1 rewatch

Every episode also had at least one note of *look at how good all the acting is* so I erased those unless they specified why; also erased some pretty obvious notes that didn't seem worth the effort of transcribing

Ep 1 and 8 are missing because I was eating dinner while watching those and my hands were not free to scribble

Ep2:

Tiny whitecloak looks scared of Valda :(

I love the framing with Valda, with flames around him and the reflection of flames on the cup he drinks from.

The fade walking in view has the same whistle cue as Padan Fain does, just a little subtler. That's so fun.

Hightower please. Your son should hide or swim. You're going to be no help at all.

Moiraine has like a second of grief on her face as Hightower drowns before swiping it off her face.

Sit down Moiraine you're injured.

At least she has fun <- gets her cryptic mentor moments

I wondered why they put the Egwene&Moiraine scene in, but it does teach us that channeling is not a choice. It's hard, you need to learn it, but it will happen. And that Egwene is a channeler of course.

Such a good expression on Egwene on 'I understand'

Lan being protective gives me life

Moiraine sounds like she's trying not to cry :(((

There are two levels to every single expression Moiraine makes while talking to the whitecloaks. *Acting*

The manetheren story is pretty long. No wonder people at amazon wanted to cut it. It does foreshadow burning out, and I like that we get some of the lore, but it doesn't do a whole lot.

Look warder/aes sedai bond is so important to me. I read these books at a very formative age.

I don't get why they stay in shadar logoth. Is there no other exit from the city? If there is just ride through. You can't heal Moiraine here anyway, just get going. And if there is only one exit, why didn't the trollocs just camp there and wait for them to come out?

(Real answer is they do it because Mat needs a chance to find the dagger & we need a chance to see mashadar)

I love Mat. He's asking the exact same questions I would (and providing some much-needed levity and a feeling that these kids love each other, even if they're dealing with a lot right now)

Even the light is shadowy in Shadar Logoth.

Is that whistle diegetic or not

Mandarb is just chilling while everyone else is panicking as they escape mashadar :)

Trolloc behaviour is so antithetical to nynaeve :(

This is some good lighting for a night scene I can see every detail, even her expressions

Nynaeve looks so pissed tied up I love her

Her coat blends in beautifully in the forest

Lan looks worried but only if you really know how to look

Love the sound design in the Perrin dream and the quick Ishy replacement

Even dagger Mat is truly the funny one :)

I really love whoever noted that Dana's cooking is like her life philosophy. I should find that post again.

'Someplace new where nobody knows the dirt you're born in' <- said to Mat. Means so much in the show. And you can see the temptation, but he still wants to go home to his sisters

The 'Siuan' mumble is so self-indulgent. You could start the scene with Lan returning, or you could have her talking in her sleep. But just the one barely audible mumble that half the audience won't even catch? Truly there just for the siuraine fans.

Dana just before she dies looked so insane. I love her. Best show-only character so far. And her moment of panic when dying *mwah*

Cutting from her blood to the skyline is still my favourite transition. Or at least one of them, the door shenanigans late in e7 are so good too.

Logain jumpscare

Logain in the show is such a good character. I would love to see more of him.

I get that they don't have yellows on this trip because there are no significant yellow aes sedai we need to know right now, but also. Have some yellows with you when you go to war, please.

Love the shield effects. Some people complained about s1 effects but I truly like them. If they hadn't upgraded the effects I wouldn't have known to miss anything.

Love seeing Lan actually intract with other warders

Love the tuatha'an style. The colours! Even their wagons are pretty even if worn :)

I think Alanna's lines in her scene with Moiraine could use some work. Some of them are great, highlighting her history with Moiraine, telling us quite naturally what the greens do. But some seem a little stiff or out of place. Like find another way to end the scene than a non-sequitur about a long dead dog.

Mat + Rand are so scruffy. Again whoever claims they are too clean needs to get their eyes checked.

Nynaeve looks so out of her depth here. Only showing it when no-one is looking ofc.

That girl's doll looks just like the ones my mom handmade me. I still have some of them.

This episode is fond of association transitions instead of visual transitions. Like talking about dragon reborn -> cut to Logain, that type of stuff.

Nyn startles minutely when Lan leaves the fire. She shooketh

So many good warder moments in this episode

Aram damn near performing a mating dance for Egwene.

Ila's lines and their delivery are so good. And good enough lighting that I can see her eyes are red even though it's night.

Good emotional scenes between Lan&Nynaeve and Stepin&Kerene

Álvaro Morte can emote so much in just a few seconds

I love that they give the actors opportunities to just react wordlessly. Yesss let them show instead of tell

Too pretty woods to hold such grief

I love the circle burial for enemies and allies alike

And the sound design is great tho don't make Alanna mime singing. This can be non-diegetic singing

Love all the silent Moiraine+Lan moments

Both my boys look so gaunt

Oh I heard the whistle and there he is

Is that another waystone the tuatha'an went past or just a monument or roadmarker of some kind

Aram is more colourful here? More settled / happy with his lot with the tuatha'an?

Why are they running from the whitecloaks. Are you trying to be suspicious.

Valda is so hateful. His actror is so good.

This moment when Logain looks at Mat/Rand is SO OBVIOUSLY from Mat's pov. The sound cues and where the camera points both say so. We aren't looking at Rand because Mat is in his own head and only focusing on Logain and himself. He barely even hears Rand. I've said so since the episode came out and people were panicking at 'Logain laughing at Mat' - MAT DOESN'T KNOW WHO HE'S LOOKING AT HE JUST SEES WHAT HE THINKS HIS FUTURE IS. That's why it's shot the way it is.

So much emotion on Stepin's 'I knew I wasn't worthy'. I wish they didn't try to make a joke out of this scene. Either don't do a very long sincere molologue or let it stand on its own. But the spouse got a laugh out of it so whatever.

I love the funeral ritual with the ring

And other great silent Moiraine + Lan scene. They're so in synch here.

I wish I knew how to read Valda so I knew if he's telling what he really thinks or bulshitting. I think he's telling the truth about everything except letting one of them go. If Egwene channels he's killing them both, and he's so sure she's a channeler that nothing will make him let them go. So why lie? They're dead anyway.

I love that the kids all love each other

Egwene is unbreakable but the books sure do try, especially book 2

Moiraine subtly nodding when Siuan speaks with the girls :) but also :(

Ah Egwene jumping at the call. I love her.

Have they added some footage to the scene with Loial? I think it's longer and flows better now.

Ep7

I get she took the veil down because she didn't plan on fighting anymore but I wish they'd have let her keep it. Yes it's a minor acting and breathing impediment but the actor emotes well enough with her eyes that it would have been enough.

Nynaeve thinks Perrin watching Egwene + Rand is jealousy but I think it's just a reminder of what he's lost

I wish they would have had Perrin or Rand glancing into the abyss when the black wind speaks to them. Just to highlight the danger.

I love Agelmar's cloak. It looks like feathers and his banner is a black hawk

Is Moiraine sending reds after Mat a distraction for Amalisa or is she really concerned? I suppose she's been very firm in her view that Mat is the likeliest to turn to the shadow, so probably both.

I love that the borderlands are hot. In so many fantasy series the evil place is always icy tundra. I take personal offence to that.

Rand looks extra tired. Everyone does to some extent but him more than the others.

I do like that they highlight, very strongly, that Moiraine could be wrong. Since in so many ways, she is.

That's such an Egwene look (

The argument between all of them flows so naturally until Nynaeve interjects. Maybe if we'd have seen them *actually fighting about her* even once before this wouldn't feel so out of place. But now it just feels like it comes out of nowhere.

Ugh so much romance in this episode but at least I get to see Lan happy<3

I do love the sound design in the Rand&Egwene talk.

Look at my boy smiling!

The Lan&Nynaeve kiss was just awkward for me because it was just romance. And sexual tension or whatever. Both fly straight over my head. But mutual declarations of loyalty? I'm so here for this Rand&Egwene scene.

Min&Rand scene might be my favourite in this episode tho

Love this ending sequence where they cut between the two different doors and two different scenes

I LOVED Athena’s entire story this episode and I’m glad it didn’t end with a resolution. Some things just can’t be resolved so easily. There is some deep rooted. Issues. And it can’t be solved with one conversation.

I can’t believe buck found chimney oh my damn goodness. Why did he think he could steal the phone. Oh that little interaction between Eddie and buck was everything- buck will do anything for Maddie. I’m crying

MADDIE. Maddie. Is so damn strong and resilient it’s. Terrifying bc it. It’s a reality. This is real. Everything with Doug and her pain is so. Real. Jennifer is truly an amazing actress. I was so scared the entire episode. Everything she lived through and the flashbacks to her life with Doug.

Wait- Christopher’s first instinct at the hospital was to abandon his parents and go sit in the chair next to chims bed???? He is the sweetest child I am dead

When Chim and Maddie realized they were both Alive oh my heart

Ep 14

Is it bad I started every episode with “oh great who’s gonna die today”

Bobby having Buddie be his glamorous assistants I cried? Buck loves KIDS OH MY GOSH. And and the little baby bringing his mom back to life? Speaking of amazing actors Hen??? Her collapsing got me hard. Amazing vs miracle damn straight

the gas line explosions were so scary!! Nobody looked concerned either buck hanging from the ladder I screamed but OKAY SPIDER EDDIE??

TOMMYS BACK??????

so glad Bobby and Michael were able to talk!!!! Their fight left me worried for a second!

And okay okay Maddie and chimney just need a minute! JUDT a minute. Makes sense! They need it

Speed running Ep 15-ep 17

I LOVE A GOOD HEIST. I was raised on Brooklyn 99 baby heist season was the best. This was executed so well I loved every bit. The questioning scene was executed so well I swear this show has the best interactions(?) the way conversations flow easily between different characters but is creating a cohesive line? Does that make sense they do it all the time

What are the chances Maddie texts buck about money RIGHT at that moment lmao they look guilty as hell

Okay well now I wanna watch Chris surf??? Bet?? Sounds fun?? How DOES Eddie have all this money to afford all this? I’m with Shannon tbh I’d worry too

Oh and LOVE the Marty reveal scene at the 118- man are they intimidating

Anything to do with Bobby’s storyline I am OBSESSED WITH. Every church scene is perfection. I’m Catholic so those scenes hit DIFFERENT AND are also very appropriate and real! Whoever workshopped that scene actually understands Catholicism which you don’t see that often!

I also really liked the cinematography floating in the smoke and the flashes- very similar to chimneys which I loved.

I didn’t. I didn’t loovveee the ep ending on a happy note bc we know from the season prior that Bobby was still intending on. Harming himself. Once the book was complete so that felt weird. But overall great episode and insight

Also I like Tommy. He started iffy but grew to like him especially that chicken scene lmao

Okay so the 118 witnessed Shannon’s death and then buck being crushed can they catch a break????? One after the other??? Sobbing at how the community came together to rescue him i cried. The music didn’t help.

Lowkey happy it was Carla whom buck saw when he woke up! But. Idk. Nde. Nobody from the 118 was there for that Scene. Felt weird tbh given other hospital trips.

Concerned with bucks immediate fear driven anger about returning to work. I know what’s coming so I’m going to be careful to document each perspective I see!
