Takaaki teaching Taka to dance is something that will lay heavy on my brain. Like...ughh, just Takaaki teaching him to waltz or even dance to salsa (which he's terrible at, but knows the steps and moves. Taka's mom would've definitely been better at teaching Taka, but...yeah.) He's not the best teacher, but Taka was able to learn just by following his father's steps. But they've definitely fucked up so much and started laughing their asses off.

Then Taka proceeds to teach Mondo later on in life. And Mondo definitely has two left feet, motherfucker can't dance for shit. But Taka is patient and tries his best to teach Mondo as his father taught him.

I fight the urge to roll my eyes, because

Other times, they look at me through furrowed brows,

Unaware that there are countries that speak Spanish other than

Mexico and Spain.

They tell me to prove it, but how?

How do I prove wearing yellow underwear every New Year’s Eve, 

For good luck?

Where are the records saying that 

I am a certified quinceañera?

Who documents how often I eat

Arepas?

Where are the diary entries from the week that I spent,

Pent up in my room,

Afraid that la llorona would get me at night?

And even though they wouldn't know a thing,

About how it feels to have your identity constantly questioned,

I worry that they're right.

I can’t recite the Venezuelan anthem like my dad proudly does, before each fútbol game,

Collection Spotlight: Selena - Through the Years (2007)

2007's Through the Years is not your average Selena compilation. Not only does it contain more rare 80s songs that cannot be found on streaming, but it also has 2 previously unreleased songs. Feelings is Selena's first recording at about 7 years old and Puede Ser is a demo whose creation is described in Chris Perez's 2012 book, To Selena With Love. He was producing a song for another band at their home. Selena was at home cleaning the house and Chris just wasn't getting what he was looking for out of the guest musician. After the musician left, Selena mused that he must be so frustrated after that session and that she would like a crack at it. She immediately sang it how Chris imagined it should sound! The book doesn't mention exactly which song it is, but in other research over the years, I am quite convinced it was this one.

Some copies also come with a DVD, which I didn't expect when ordering online. Lucky me, it has all of my favorite performances that I look up on YouTube all the time!

No Me Queda Más, Si Una Vez are from the Noche de Carnival in Miami 1995. No Debes Jugar, Baila Esta Cumbia from an episode of Furia Musical in 1993. Amor Prohibido, Bidi Bidi Bom Bom, Como la Flor, Baila Esta Cumbia, La Carcacha from an episode of En Vivo in 1994. La Llamada, Como la Flor from the Festival Acapulco in 1994.

Long story short, it is definitely worth the buy if you ever see it around for a decent price!
