Hide Self View
We’re living in the future of The Jetsons and Star Trek, where making a video call is common place.  We catch up with relatives, keep contact with friends, have telehealth appointments and attend work meetings - all over video conferencing applications like Zoom, Skype, Google Meet...
Tumblr media
One thing that the our past science fiction stories didn’t include was the ever present “self view”, where each and every video call turns into us looking at ourselves in addition to those we are calling.
I don’t know about you, but when I am in a meeting or chatting with my parents or in a work committee meeting and I constantly see myself, I think about... my self.  I look at my complexion, my hair, my facial expression, my background, my shirt color or style...
It ends up being a very self-centered way to interact with other people.  Instead of being fully present with them, I am focused on my own view.  Video conferencing has turned into a time when I could instead be staring into a mirror.
Tumblr media
This doesn’t feel natural or supportive of my mental health.  When in person in a meeting or gathering, I don’t spend the entire time looking at myself, I spend it look at other people and what is around us.  Video conferencing has the technology to connect us in a more intimate way than just audio, but it also puts ourselves smack in the center by default.
I’ve gotten into the habit of treating my virtual meetings like my in person gatherings, by turning off my self view and trying to be more present through the technology.  It does my mental health no benefit to stare at myself for so long.  I doubt it does anyone’s mental health benefit.
Tumblr media
Join me if you will.  Check to make sure your video is on, centered, clear and then Hide Self View!  Don’t buy into the self-centered mirror gazing of video conferencing.  Be present with other people as you are in person.  It can be hard at first, but it’s a freeing spiritual practice.

So yeah my self esteem has been... missing lolol
But I have also managed to hold onto these moments where I can appreciate myself through the vision of another that isn't even shared
Insomuch as, I see myself through their eyes doing them a kindness, and I recognise that thoughtful part of myself. Or I see that I'm giving them something that feels them with positivity and tenderness, that no one else provides in quite the same way. Or I see them relax around me, or how they light up, or the smile that remains on their face in my presence.
All of these small moments serving as a subtle reminder that I am enjoyable, that I have a positive impact, that there is good in me and love to be shared.

I don’t know why I shrink myself because I find myself inadequate, because I exist to be a presence not an image

(kinda self indulgent but-)
Nanami knows your beauty routine like the back of his hand. How you keep your nails, your hair, your skincare, make up, body care etc. But he especially knows that you’re a stickler when it comes to hair removal. He thinks it’s interesting that sometimes you’ll forgo him making love to you because you’re “you’re not prepared”. Rambling off some excuse about how you haven’t had a chance to shave or see your waxer.
Nanami, of course, will never argue. It’s whatever you’re comfortable with. But he sees how you ease the more you trust him, the more you grow comfortable in your relationship. You don’t even bat an eye when he loops his fingers around the strings of your underwear, drags it down slowly - the tip of his cock leaking with pre cum and brows raising when he sees tufts of hair on your pubis.
It’s only when he gently grazes his fingers against your mound do your eyes shoot open. You clasp your fingers around his wrist and squeeze, “wait, I forgot-“ you blurt, half ashamed.
But he knows you’re in heat, takes a second to drag his fingers up against your slit.
“I’m not ready for you,” you insist, pushing yourself up on your forearms only to watch your lover pull his digits away, your slick coating the pads in glittering strings.
“I beg to disagree,” he teases, eyes on yours while his fingers move to his lips to taste your arousal, making you pulse from between your legs.
His moves one hand to your pelvis, gently massaging his thumb against your hip. “You know I have no preference, right?” he ensures, “I just want to eat you out and fuck you as I please. But I won’t do it if you’re uncomfortable.”
His touch on your hip burns your skin. You can feel yourself getting wet. “I don’t want you to stop,” you whisper after a few seconds, and Nanami smiles.
He kisses your belly button, creates a path down your lower belly and over your mound. His lips circle over your clit, his tongue rubbing the bud. He throws your legs over his shoulders, and feasts.

You know, it's rather interesting to me that Taylor Swift's parasocial relationship with her fans is honestly more akin to a YouTuber than a writer's. When I scroll through her tag on tumblr/Twitter, it's far more regarding the connection to her personal life/relationship developments than the actual metaphors/fictional story she might be telling. Everything comes back to how her songs reflect back on her relationships with Joe/Matty/Travis/Jake/insert ex-boyfriend here. And what fascinates me about it is that even though she complains about it, she leans into that very perception because it strengthens the parasocial bond.
The marketing for TTPD so clearly being about Joe Alwyn and the songs to Matty Healy. The marketing/video for Red TV so CLEARLY being about Jake Gyllenhaal, with so many of the new lines in All Too Well specifically being digs at him (I'll get older but your lovers stay my age, casting an actor that looks like him for the video, specific lines in I Bet You Think About Me). The fact that songs like Getaway Car and Bejeweled and Gorgeous and London Boy and Lavender Haze being picked apart at time of release and long after for signs of relationships crumbling. The way she uses surprise songs in relation to her relationship development with Joe/Matty/Travis. The damn TTPD "stages of grief" playlists where she deliberately undid/changed the meanings of old songs just to keep her audience speculating on her love life.
It's not sexist to point out that her wielding her love life is a marketing tool and that the strongest connection to her audience isn't the strength of her writing/the composition of her music- it's her deliberate crafting of a connection between her music and her personal life, leaving the audience invested in her music as an extension of Taylor the Person/Girlfriend rather than Taylor the Artist.

hold. I'm curious about this now
*chosen/proper name, not necessarily a dead/legal name
edit if you have more than one name and aren't attached to any of them pick the fourth option thank you love and light second edit if your view of your name is neutral or you feel like you'd respond to anything. fourth option too

All look and likeness caught from earth,
All accident of kin and birth,
Had pass'd away. There was no trace
Of aught on that illumined face,
Uprais'd beneath the rifled stone
But of one spirit All her own;—
She, herself, and only she,
Shone thro’ her body visibly.

was talking to my mom about the trend of (cis) (femme) women saying "i'm a feminist but men/butches/mascs should always pay for dinner" stuff and just. if i've said it once i'll say it a million times. feminism is not "being nice to women."
like if someone offers to pay for anything, you are not obligated to deny them For The Sake of Feminism. its a nice thing to do for a date or a partner. but for one, I think we should always be suspicious of treating things popular in patriarchal culture as something secretly feminism, especially when its related to how interactions between men and women should go. and two, putting yourself in a position as a marginalized gender, where you expect to be dependent on a cis man for financial support, is potentially dangerous. its good and healthy to establish financial independence. and three its just nice to have displays of equality and partnership in a relationship. idk man putting that kind of expectation on a partner simply for their gender/gender expression would make me feel gross and mean.
