The Patchwork of Us | Chapter 6

In today's chapter, Remus takes Teddy Christmas shopping but it does not go according to plan. In fact, it goes very very wrong as Remus' past catches up to him in the worst possible way and Sirius finally tires of the secrets.

This is a heavy chapter, folks, so be kind to yourselves and remember that sometimes things need to get worse before they can get better.

Remus hadn’t been able to shake the conversation he’d had with Sirius. He knew that he needed to talk to his parents eventually, Sirius had made that very clear, but he just couldn’t bring himself to do it.

He’d been sleeping badly, his old nightmares returning and keeping him up during the few nights that he wasn’t working. He did his best to hold it together though, but he knew it wouldn’t be sustainable in the long run.

It wasn’t the first time he’d hit a bad spell, and it most likely wouldn’t be the last either. He knew that the holidays were difficult, and with the extra stress of spending more time with Teddy and the pressure of reconnecting with his parents hanging over him, he really wasn’t surprised that his mind and body were screaming at him to slow down and take a break.

His bad leg was acting up again, and he knew the cold was only partly to blame. As always when he found his mind spinning out of control, his body wasn’t far behind, and the many hours he spent in his car while working didn’t help either. He was more reliant on his cane than he’d been in a long time, and he felt stiffer and more awkward than usual.

He’d been embarrassed, at first, picking Teddy up at school. Or, not embarrassed for himself, he had gotten over that a long time ago, but worried that Teddy would be embarrassed for him. So far the boy hadn’t shown that he’d been, but Remus was painfully aware what a bleak and pathetic figure he made, especially when standing next to Sirius Black who, despite being the same age as Remus, looked like vitality personified.

Sirius was a whole different can of worms that Remus had done his best not to think about lately. Remus felt as if something had changed between them, and he couldn’t put his finger on what or why. Sirius was friendlier to him, warmer, and staying for dinner after Remus had picked up Teddy from school had become a habit.

When the boy disappeared up the stairs after dinner, it left Sirius and Remus alone in the kitchen. Usually Remus would stay long enough to keep Sirius company while he tidied up after their dinner, which Remus usually cooked, and the whole thing felt…strangely domestic. He found that Sirius was funny and smart and when he wasn’t being a stuck-up, pompous arse it was actually quite nice being around him.

Sometimes Remus would put Teddy to bed before going home to his empty and dark flat to stare at the wall until his eyes hurt. When he did manage to fall asleep there were either nightmares or strange dreams that made little sense that woke him up, his heart racing in his chest. At least it had been, until this morning.

Remus didn’t remember the details, but he did very vidily remember black, silky hair and grey eyes and long fingers. His body itched with the fake memory of being pinned against the wall, of Sirius’ solid body pressed against him, of pink lips and sharp teeth. Remus wasn’t a teenager anymore, and he rarely woke up with an erection these days, but this morning he had.

He didn’t know where it came from. He hadn’t thought about Sirius like that since– well, he hadn’t wanted to remember ever having thought about Sirius like that, but the dream had been a painful reminder. Even though Remus hadn’t figured out his sexuality until well after school, he still had eyes, and you would have to be blind not to see how attractive Sirius Black was. And Remus Lupin was a lot of things but blind was not one of them.

So there was nothing wrong with his eyes, but there was a problem with almost everything else, and Sirius was, well, he was Sirius Black and even if Remus had known then what he knew now, he would never have been brave enough to do anything about it. Now, he told himself, the reason for his dream was probably just because he’d been spending so much time with Sirius lately. 

Sirius’ house was so much nicer than his own flat, and Teddy was there. Teddy was there and so was Sirius, with his muscular arms and long throat and pale skin. No. Remus could not go down that route, not with Sirius of all people. It wasn’t even about Sirius, not really, it was just the fact that he hadn’t gotten laid in ages and he was getting frustrated and Sirius was right there .

He was right there with his broad shoulders and big hands and sharp cheekbones and after a while, by the time Remus had made it to the shower, he gave in to the fantasy. He gave in to the thoughts, closing his eyes underneath the hot spray of water as he pulled himself off while thinking of smooth skin and a strong jaw and stormy eyes.

Thanks for the ask! For my five:

The Saint’s Blade is definitely my favourite fic, and one of my favourite things I’ve written overall. A series of interconnected stories about Sophia Hess going into another world which worships Worm capes as gods – becoming a paladin – and falling in love in the process. The opportunity to world-build was wonderfully fun, the OC cast great to work with, and it gave an interesting chance to play with Soph’s character to boot.

No Greater Love is the other longer fic from my more recent Worm stuff which I’m proud of, where Taylor gets dropped into a universe where her alter-ego is a Ward, dating Shadow Stalker…and has just been killed in action. I particularly enjoyed writing the aftermath of Taylor’s death in the first chapter, tackling it from three different perspectives – the casualty notification officer, her mom, and her girlfriend – and exploring the nuances as a result.

While I really enjoy a lot of my Legend of Korra and ATLA fic, Kuvira’s Diary in the Advance to Ba Sing Se, 171 AG is one I particularly liked writing. As the title suggests, it is verbatim Kuvira’s diary from the point of leaving Zaofu to her securing Ba Sing Se and being empowered by the other nations to re-unify the Earth Kingdom. Writing an early, not-jaded Kuvira was great fun – particularly as I was able to sow the seeds of what she later became throughout – while the worldbuilding of the Earth Kingdom sinking into anarchy and depredation was an enjoyable exercise.

Balestra, co-written with the wonderful maroon_sweater, was unquestionably the most fun I’ve ever had writing a fanfic. In premise, it was an epistolary enemies to lovers romance inspired by This Is How You Lose The Time War. In execution, it was her and I writing each other condescending hate mail on a daily basis for a month – really quite fantastic. This is only uplifted by the fact that Roon is an incredibly talented writer, deeply and dryly witty in a way which never ceases to impress; trying to keep up with her alone was an engaging challenge.

When We Are Dust, my collection of Worm WW1 AU snippets, is a fic I often go back to read – especially ‘All His Evermore’, about General Hana Kochar of the Kurdish Republic, ‘Inherent to Circumstance’ about Shatterbird, leader of the Arab Revolt, and ‘Et Decorum Est’ about Captain Dean Stansfield in Craiglockhart mental hospital. Translating the characters into the historical setting was an engaging challenge, and the AU fit my penchant for both military detail and big emotional moments. I’m also proud of the writing; the last line, in particular – ‘As for the dead? They remain, fixed and unmoving down the centuries. Like stars, when we are dust.’

Lost and Found: This is a soulmate fic and I absolutely loved writing it! I think it helped that it was a trope I hadn't seen before so that made it a little something unique!

there's no remedy for memory: This one is my Carlos-uses-his-safeword fic. It's just so soft almost-smut.

Only for Tonight: My escort AU. This one was SO much fun to write and I give little happy squeals when someone tells me that the ending caught them by surprise! This one pushed past my smut-writing comfort zone a little, but I hope the payoff is worth it.

Back to Square One: This one is another that is so sad but so soft. I had the idea and a partially finished fic for SO long in my drafts. Finally, a challenge came up that this was perfect for, and pushed me to finish it. I'm so glad I did!

All the Things we Tried to Forget: This is another I started and then chickened out a couple of times before finally finishing and posting. I had this idea in my head and I wasn't confident enough that I could pull it off how I wanted. It seems to have gone over well, I'm glad I moved past being chicken and ended up finishing.

1. Companionship  - Sirius Black/Harry Potter  (Sugar Daddy) 

Between Fourth and Fifth year, Sirius visits Harry one night to help him run away.

Nine years later, Harry's living in the Muggle World and working as an escort under an assumed name. He's about to meet his all-time favorite client, unware that he's the godfather Harry lost touch with all those years ago.

I love this one because it’s the first time I wrote the actual Age Gap and it got me out of my comfort zone.  It should me some things I can enjoy to read and write.  Very proud that I also wrote it in less than 6 weeks.

2. Rebuilding - Sirius Black/James Potter (The Prongsfoot Raises Harry Series)

When James was out the night of Halloween, Lily dies, and he's left to pick up the pieces. Luckily Sirius is there to help him.

I love this story because It’s the first Prongsfoot fic I wrote.  It deals with James’ grief, Sirius’ support and I’m proud because I think I really touched on dealing with grief.  

3. The Check / Mirror Mirror - Sirius Black & Harry Potter, also later, Sirius Black/James Potter - James Potter/Lily Potter

The day before fifth year, Sirius can't sleep and checks on Harry. This check leads Sirius to give Harry the mirror that night allowing them to forge a new fifth year with Sirius supporting Harry as much as he can.

This one is a series & a chapter fic depending on how you read it.  (I began posting it as one shots that were related only to discover that it works better as a chapter fic).  I really love this one because it’s something I’ve ALWAYS wanted to do.  A rewrite of the last three books, helping Harry get what he deserves and relying on that bond he has with Sirius and giving Sirius the respect he deserves.  Still ongoing.  

4. Decisions, Decisions - Trevor Lefkowitz/Hetty Woodstone

After the events of the holidays, Hetty's teasing of Trevor leads them down an interesting path together.

This is my first and definitely not last HMoney Fic.  I love it a lot, it was based off of just what I assumed would happen after we got that teasing in Family Business.  I just loved the idea of them together and it was fun to read it.

5. Trevor’s Body - Trevor Lefkowitz/Hetty Woodstone

Trevor's memorial weekend prompts a conversation that leads to a different ending to Trevor's Body.

I liked this one because it resolves one of the issues I had with the show.  I really wanted Trevor to get to talk to his parents and Hetty to comfort him, so this was my way to get that and I loved writing it.

the way you left me || At nineteen, James vanishes, and Lily breaks.

I wrote this in a fevered rush, and I think it's the one I'm most proud of overall. Not entirely sure why, which doesn't lend itself to this sort of post, does it? It's sad and sweet and painful and all the things I like writing most. Angst with a happy, hopeful ending is my sweet spot.

2. Uninvited || With NEWTs looming, friends gather at the Potters' cottage in Wales to study and let off steam during the Easter holidays of their seventh year.

What's not to enjoy about pining, a Welsh beach and a 'there was only one bed' scenario? It includes this sentence, which I feel nicely encapsulates the gang:

They ate their fill; Mary tried to teach them a strange Muggle game called cricket, which James had a natural affinity for (“ever the fucking sportsman,” Marlene jeered from her position on the opposing team); Sirius tried to lead a team into the shallows, forgetting that the waters around the British Isles were frigid at the best of times; Remus built a bonfire in a bid to stop said team from developing frostbite.

I mean, what more can I say?

3. Forget-Me-Not (cw: sa). ||. At eighteen, Lily Evans fell - and fell hard - for James Potter, a classmate she had never given much thought to before. He seemed as into her as she was into him, so why is it, when she starts a new job almost a decade and a lot of water under that particular bridge later, that her new boss - James Potter himself - doesn't seem to remember her at all? A Don’t You Forget About Me by Mhairi Mcfarlane AU fic.

I wasn't going to include this one, but I guess I changed my mind? I'm proud that I a) finished this fic at all, and b) hopefully managed a very fine balance in dealing with an extremely sensitive subject. It was all a very personal writing experience and I guess I'm glad it all came out okay in the end.

4. A Lesson in Communication || There's a rule at his school that teachers are strictly not allowed to date the parents of pupils. James has never minded this rule before...

This largely started because it so amused me to think of James wrangling children at sports day. This is one of those stories that was supposed to be a quick thing, and then morphed into a nearly-12k monster whereby the misunderstandings piled up on top of each other like delicious pancakes. Yes, if anyone asked a straightforward question this fic would be about 500 words. Yes, my favourite bit is still Remus' reaction when he realises James' mistake.

5. The Price We Pay || As the summer before their sixth year comes to an end, Sirius, Remus, Lily and James consider how things may be different on their return to Hogwarts. When Sirius finally breaks free from his toxic home, it should be a fresh start - but unfortunately, it's the start of a spiral that will threaten the foundations of friendship, and change their lives irrevocably.

Last but not least! That blurb could do with updating, really, given that now – 27 chapters in – we're into seventh year and rather a lot has happened, haha. Still, when I started it, I didn't think I'd write more than maybe five or six chapters, and then it sort of grew its own little legs and scurried away from me. You know, how writing does? It's my original baby fic and I love it so but I also go through phases where I worry it's all utter bollocks, so it's very much a rollercoaster of a relationship. There is something both wonderful and challenging in writing a canon multi-chap, especially in this fandom where there are so many amazing canon multi-chaps. We battle on.

What a strange, therapy-esque post this ended up being 😅

Are we destined to burn or will we last the night?

Bobby expects to find Buck pacing the corridors, tuned into the singular frequency of Eddie, Eddie, Eddie — his panic and fear coming off of him in waves — but instead, he finds him hovering off to one-side, standing so still and so silent that Bobby almost hadn’t noticed there was anyone there at all.

Mehta had said that Buck wasn’t injured, he’d said that he needed the sweatshirt, that he was shaken up, but…this? Bobby's not sure he’s ever gonna forget the image of what his youngest firefighter looks like covered in his best friend's blood.

aka Bobby arrives at the hospital just after Eddie’s been shot, and tries to deal with the fallout.

Wish we could cut all ties with the morning light

“You ever think that maybe I might be doing this for me too?” Eddie asks.

Buck looks a little broken at that, the way his face seems to almost collapse in on itself, and the breath he lets out is shaky and a little surprised. But it’s true. Eddie needs this. He needs to convince himself that he’s safe, that Buck’s safe, that Christopher’s safe. He needs the quiet ministrations to calm him down—he needs to slip into the familiar motions of giving care until his heart rate slows and finally the last of the adrenaline can ebb away.

He lets his thumb brush at Buck’s cheek, his hand still cradling his jaw. The moment seems to stretch and breathe and they stay there for a while, tethered by touch, until finally Buck gives a little nod of acceptance as he lets Eddie continue with his work.

While they wait for news at the hospital, Eddie tends to Buck's head wound.

I'm not you, nor you me (but we're both moving steady)

Bobby considers asking Buck again how he’s really doing—the bags under his eyes telling a different story to the one coming out of his mouth—but he learnt a long time ago that the best tactic when it came to Evan Buckley was to wait him out.

So Bobby lets the silence stretch and settle, with little more than the steady whirring and beeping of the hospital machines at his side to encroach on the quiet.

And sure enough, as it always does, Bobby’s patience pays off.

In the aftermath of the shooting, Buck visits Bobby in the hospital, and they have a long-overdue conversation.

My sense of wonder's just a little tired

“You stayed,” is all Eddie says a little dumbly, a little in awe, and Buck’s quiet soft rambling comes to a sudden stop. 

“Yeah, I was just—” he starts to explain about the mail again, gesturing to the door, when he seems to get the gist of what Eddie’s really saying, and his shoulders slump down a little then with a release of tension; “Eddie, of course I stayed.”

Of course. 

Of course, because his son called him. Christopher called Buck, and Buck came running. Buck busted down the door. Buck got Eddie on his feet. He got Christopher settled, and reassured, and then he led Eddie out of the rubble of his room and over to the dining table.

The morning after the night before, Eddie wakes up to a new day.

Every bit of me hurting for you 

Buck hates that Maddie’s crying and he hates that it’s his fault. He hates that everything went to shit as quickly as it did, and he hates that he didn’t see the knife until it was too late. But what was he supposed to do? Those assholes were threatening his sister. He’d do it all over again if he had to.

A spark of pain jolts him back to the present as Maddie presses down hard against the stab wound at his abdomen.

“Stay with me, Buck,” she says and he’s trying, he really is, but he’s also trying very hard not to cry out in pain, or puke, and that’s taking up most of his energy right now...

Buck's hurt, and Maddie's just trying to keep him awake and alert until help arrives.

Hi! Thank you for a lovely ask. I don't think I can do fice self-recs, since that would be like half of what I have on ao3, but as far as my favourites go:

high in the halls

The grindeldore got au that is, quite possibly, the most self-indulgent fic I have written. It was really fun to write, because I got to play with non-linear narration and unreliable narrator and stylised prose. I am really proud of that one, too.

through the windows of this love

Co-written with Marron, my favourite child. I loved writing that fic - it's pure fluff with some humour thrown in for a good measure. We have started writing it pretty soon after I finished watching Guardian, too - the end of December 2021 and it was all written in March. I have very fond memories of thinking out the ridiculous jokes to throw in there and cackling about them with Marron.

And I think that this is it from me! I don't really have that many fics to choose from, so I feel like this is enough 😅
