"its ok, you don't need to know verbs, you're not a linguist, you're a dog" -me, to my dog, right now
#explaining homework to the dog#in my defense it was REALLY COOL homework#like the question had predicates and COM combine to explain why a sentence is fucked up#thats so cool?? what the fuck#like heck yeah “who did he believe the father of will go to the meeting” fuck them up ECM#(the other sentence was like. “who did he convince the father of to go to the meeting” or somthing idk. object control tho)#which. ECM had the “the father of t” be the specIP which COM meant was non grammatical#and on OC it was a PRO thats indexed like it instead. meaning the movement wasn't from there#I even put the fucking. type of island this is. it's SC island. Im so cool you guys and also I fucking hate this#syntax who I only know BURNING HATRED/pos#anyways remind me when I'm doing the syntax seminar next semester that I always have that time around week 7 when I hate syntax#and that I'll get over it and do something epic about sociolingyistic binding phi stuff maybe#like about why all the examples we use are like “mary liked himself” like. why do we assyme marys pronouns. maybe theyre a he/she/they#what part of being a syntactician makes me part of the pronouns police#for the record also this is NOT what I want to research in general but also like#I feel like if anything would get me attention from the syntax folk here it'd be this#bc my morphology things feel. idk. kinda in-between on syntax and semantics. like bc I wanna do lexical meaning of morphemes#which. is not something people here would particularly be looking to investigate. right now#but ooohh Im gonna go learn soo much morpheme stuff#and do the math and coding and experiments. and become a professor and go teach morphology#like pleaseplease you guys I wanna be the morphology teacher at tau soo bad#running silly morpheme building on borrowed words experiments. truly this is using All the things#because borrowed words interacting with morphology is very phonological of me. but also buildings is a syntax/semantics thing#aaaaa I don't knowwww this is such a broad subject and I cant find anything on ittt#linguistics posting

Because when a color demon is summoned by @negrowhat and @mggsttn's post, I show up!
Top 5 - Color-Coded Storytelling in BLs
Y'all already know what number one is, but let's pretend you don't. Instead follow me on this journey into BLs that gave the best color-coded storytelling. In order to be considered for this list:
The story had to integrate the colors into multiple aspects of the series: wardrobe, lighting, accessories, setting, etc.
The colors had to be meaningful to the plot.
The narrative did not explicitly state what the colors meant.
The color coding had to be consistent and featured in each episode.
The series has to be finished.
So let's begin!
Honorable Mention: Oh No! Here Comes Trouble
Tumblr media
This isn't a BL (yet it's queer, so anyone who says it isn't can argue with the ghosts), but that damn red thread of fate had me and Yiyong messed up all season! The appearance of the color red in the series was less of an alarm, and more of a signal that every single moment was connected. All those single red threads that Yiyong and his unlikely crime-solving buddies weaved each episode came together at the last minute not only to solve the crime, but to stitch Yiyong together and bring him back from the edge of death because the true message of the show about fate and dying was how connection is what makes life worth living.

#5 - Moonlight Chicken
Tumblr media
Director Aof and Cinematographer Rath never miss, but this particular story being told in this series through the symbolism and lighting depicting moon vs. sun, coldness vs. warmth, dislike vs. love, and so much more was phenomenal. Watch the scene of Li Meng holding a crying Heart in Heart's cold, blue, dark room then witness the two kissing in Li Meng's warm, orange-ish, bright living room or watch the hatred and blue melting off of Alan as he begins to find love again and you'll understand that the color coding in this show wasn't just a simple red versus blue dynamic. This was the work of PROFESSIONALS. This color coding was like tiramisu made by the best Italian chef; it had layers and was effing delicious!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
#4 - My Beautiful Man
Tumblr media
This show did several visual devices oh-so-well. We got Hira always being lower than Kiyoi. We got the duck. We got Hira capturing Kiyoi with his camera instead of being present with him. We got traditional colors but with that Japanese twist. And all of the elements worked together to give us an elite visual story. Hira was blue. Kiyoi was white. Hira was the loyal and reserved servant. Kiyoi was a god. Yet this was the point of contention between the two. Kiyoi wasn't a heavenly being. He was a human boy devoid of love. He wanted Hira to love him, not worship him. He wanted Hira to stand with him, not lower himself. He wanted Hira to live with him, not through him. So we saw Kiyoi struggle with his color when he didn't feel stable in their relationship, but once Hira made it clear that he loved Kiyoi, Kiyoi never shined brighter.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
#3 - My Love Mix-Up
Tumblr media
Nobody does colors like Japan. It color codes its ties. It leans into the religious aspect of the light versus dark color scheme. It invents new ways to color-code and is always evolving . . . like Aoki's orange color did in this series. Our disaster bisexual started the series with a muted color and as he discovered he liked a boy and not the girl he originally was crushing on, his color started to emerge. At first it was a soft yellow, but by the end, it was a vibrant orange. Ida was a solid blue, so watching Aoki's feeling deepen for him was electric each time the blue lighting lingered on his face until it overwhelmed him. Oh, and that color exchange is the best that has ever been done!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
#2 - Semantic Error
Tumblr media
This show tricked us. Jae Young played us the way he played Sang Woo, yet Jae Young's true colors were revealed as the boys spent more time with each other because isn't that the entire point of color coding? Seeing people's true colors without having to be told? Jae Young started off as red solely because quiet and introverted Blue Boy Sang Woo HATED red. That was it! That was the entire reason Jae Young became red. He just wanted to piss off Sang Woo. But as the boys worked together and Jae Young's personality shown through, Sang Woo realized Jae Young wasn't the devil he made him out to be and was actually a pretty chill Green Guy who he wanted to hug longer than two weeks.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
#1 - Big Dragon
Tumblr media
The only reason 82% of the crowd decided to watch this show was because of the visual above. Let that sink in. This one visual piqued y'alls interest enough to watch a show about a guy drugging someone to have sex with him and blackmail him with the tape of it so he could *looks at notes* get the girl? A girl?! And the guy who was drugged, almost sexually assaulted, and blackmailed was *checks notes again* HE WAS IN TO IT?!
Tumblr media
Y'all hated this show. I loved it. Y'all think it was ridiculous. I love it. Y'all are rolling your eyes right now. I will always love it because it understood the assignment! I can't keep repeating the same points over and over, but here I go again:
Everything was color coded!
And it all supported the story. It never distracted from the story. It never became its own story. It was laced into the story. It did exactly what visual rhetoric is supposed to - show don't tell.
And it showed me when Yai opened his heart to Mangkorn.
Tumblr media
And how Mangkorn's love transformed Yai.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It showed me that Yai's sister was his only source of light living in that isolated house.
Tumblr media
It showed me the warmth Yai felt from Mangkorn's mom.
Tumblr media
And it showed me that no matter how much he protested, Yai was deep in love.
Tumblr media
And to think it all started here.
Tumblr media
And ended up here.
Tumblr media
That's the power of color coding and remarkable visuals.
Tumblr media
It makes you see the beauty is in the details.

Happy to discover that there's a name for one very useful alternative to mere "syntax" highlighting, which I naturally started doing for increased communication efficiency in my posts: semantic highlighting.
For example, each variable or function (within some scope) gets a distinct color.
Obviously in a limited color palette (like if I wanted to turn the results of a semantic highlighting library into Tumblr formatting which can still be manually edited without changing/losing color in the official post editors) you would perhaps have to reuse colors.
But if you have full RGB color space, a good move is to do what was described in this blog post: sort all identifiers, distribute them along a color spectrum.
For example, look at the way I use color in the code blocks of the `lambda-let` post. A syntax highlighter could never even come close to this. Automated semantic highlighting could get you most of the way there.
You do still need a mind's touch for things like choosing
yellow for both `let` and `apply-partially` (because both bind values to locally scoped variables, which is the relevant similarity in this case),
red for `lambda`,
orange for `lambda-let` (because it's the combination of those two).
Those are specific, intentionally suggestive choices that take into account semantics which you can only infer from the prose around the code.
So for blogging, I'd want the option of more manual control to put on those little finishing touches. Also, for blogging, you might even reasonably decide that in some situations syntax highlighting is better than semantic highlighting. (You might even decide that in the middle of editing/viewing code actually - I am a big believer in having a fast keybind to toggle code coloring - my ideal future setup instead cycles coloring between off, syntax, and semantic (possibly more than one for each kind).)
But for the most part, I think semantic highlighting is the superior approach, or at least is an umbrella that contains approaches which are superior for many cases. I would much rather that every IDE and code display used some basic semantic highlighting.

Cozytober Day 4: "Thank you for putting up with me."
masterpost
“Walls?” Danny prompted after another few sips. “Filtering?”
“Oh, sure. Stay upright for a moment,” Jason ordered.
He leaned forward enough to snag his work bag and rifle around for his tablet. Danny gamely stayed upright, but slumped back against Jason as soon as he could. To his credit, Jason juggled Danny, his own hot chocolate, and the table with ease.
Soon the wall’s specs were pulled up on the screen and Jason was chatting away about everything that worked and didn’t work with the current construction of the walls. There was no denying that Gotham had particular needs with freak weather changes, temperamental plants, and poisonous gases. But it was good to see Jason so excited about this start.
By the time that the mugs were long empty and Jason as running out of steam, Danny took a deep breath and it came easily. There were no more words or worries or frustrations clogging up his throat. There was just him. He closed his eyes and let out the breath slowly.
Jason stopped talking and pressed a light kiss to Danny’s temple. “Hey there.”
“Hey,” Danny said with a soft smile. “Sorry about the silent invasion. I know I didn’t exactly give you a heads up.”
“Coming home to find you in my bed is never a bad thing,” Jason said. He leaned forward to set his things on the coffee table before taking Danny’s empty mug too. “Besides, I didn’t add you to my door code for you not to visit. You’re always welcome here, boo.”
“A dangerous offer,” Danny said.
“I know what I’m getting into,” Jason replied. He pressed another kiss to Danny’s forehead before he took the mugs to the kitchen.
Danny stretched slowly. “Lies. I am a man of mystery!”
“Danny,” Jason said, giving a dry look from over the kitchen island. “You spilled being a Meta two weeks into us knowing each other.”
“I’m not a Meta, it’s a medical condition, and besides, you were so worried about me getting randomly killed on the streets of Gotham. I had to do something to reassure you!” Danny made himself get off the couch. He grabbed Jason’s work bag and took it over to where it normally hung by the door. He fished the folder out of the front pocket—work Jason would insist on doing over the weekend—and took it to the desk that sat in front of one massive window bays.
“Not a man of mystery.”
“I could have secrets! I could have lots of secrets.”
“Yeah, and what’s one of them.”
“I,” Danny started as he made his way to Jason, “would kill for your hot chocolate.”
Jason laughed and wrapped his arms around Danny’s waist. “Not a secret, and please don’t. I would be forced to cover up the murder and then various members of my family would give me that disappointed look.”
“Your family always sounds so interesting.”
“You could meet them yourself at dinner tomorrow.”
Danny froze. Danny froze and he knew Jason felt it by the the way his brows drew together and his mouth twitched almost into a frown.
“I’m sorry—” Danny started at the same time as Jason tried to say, “Forget I said anything.”
They both closed their mouths with a snap.
Danny broke the silence with a sigh. “I just… soon, okay? I just want to be… better.”
“You don’t have to be better, Danny. They’d love you just like this.”
Danny shook his head. “I just… can’t. I know you want me to meet them, but I just can’t yet. I know it’s… I know that… just…”
Jason quieted Danny with a kiss. “It’s okay Danny, when you’re ready.”
“Thanks for putting up with me.”
“I’m not ‘putting up with you’, Danny,” Jason said. “Giving you room isn’t putting up with you. I like who you are. And I know you aren’t ready, but my family would too. We’re all fuck ups, we’ve got no room to judge anyone.”
Danny gave a little startled snort of laughter. “You’re all Waynes.”
“And the Waynes are fucked up. We’ve been in Gotham too long, fucked up is part of the DNA.”
“You’re adopted.”
“Semantics.”
--- AN: Danny, poking at Jason's hyperfixation to have some calming chatter.
Gods I've missed writing these two ;-;

you should make a website!
"my favorite social media site is shutting down!"
"the CEO of the site i use just committed another atrocity!"
"i want a webspace that's all my own!"
if any of these sound like you (and if you're on tumblr, i know at least one applies) you should make your own website!
why make a website?
incredibly customizable
you can put whatever you want on it
it's, well, your own! like a house you build with your own hands
things you'll need
a computer. you can maybe get away with doing this on a mobile device, but i have zero experience there
a code editor. i like VScodium, which is a de-microsoft-ed version of VScode.
a will to learn ;)
site hosting
neocities. everyone knows neocities. at this point i do feel like it's become a bit too centralized, but it's a good option nonetheless. do note that there are filetype restrictions for free users, but that shouldn't be a huge issue for most. what may be an issue, though, is that there's a content security policy that prevents sites made after jan 1st, 2024 to use outside scripts. also, you have to pay to use your own domain
nekoweb. similar to neocities, but there's no filetype restrictions or a content security policy. some differences are outlined in the FAQ (thinking about moving here... i am a traitor...) i'm not sure if domain support is free or paid.
github pages or codeberg pages. you'll need an understanding of git for this
pages.gay: run by besties.house, uses git
teacake: free hosting is currently closed, but paid hosting starts at 2 bucks a month.
leprd.space: i know next to nothing about this.
a web server. don't recommend this if you don't know computer stuff but it is an option (you'll likely have to provide your own domain though)
gripes & solutions (?)
i'm not comfortable maintaining pages in pure HTML / templating with JS sucks!
with a static site generator, you can write pages in markdown and they'll be converted into HTML and (if you'd like) be put into a template of your choosing. my personal choice is 11ty but there are tons of options!
static site generators can be a bit of a learning curve (and you will have to write some html for templating) but if you're making a lot of pages or blogging regularly it's something to consider
there are starters for 11ty online but i might make a more beginner-proofed starter and/or guide in the future? don't count on it
i don't want to write/maintain CSS
simpleCSS is a tiny CSS file you can use to make semantic HTML ("naked" HTML) look nice. it's got decent customization options too. it's not particularly fancy or opinionated, but it's a good starting point if you need something
i don't know what to put on my website!
small list of ideas:
weblog
art/writing/music gallery
movie/show/book tracker
place to store bookmarks/links
scary! i'm scared!
my askbox/messages/e-mail inbox/etc. are open to anyone who'd like to ask for help!

Riddle x King of hearts/knave of hearts! y/n
“Do not stomp in the rose beds!”
Riddle’s voice cracked through the still air like a whip, sharp and authoritative. His crimson eyes narrowed at the trembling first-year Heartslabyul student tiptoeing near the petunias—clearly, again, mistaking them for the correct rose pruning area. His brow twitched. “That is Rule Thirty-Two, Section B of the Heartslabyul Code of Conduct. Must I—”
“Riddle.”
Your voice, smooth and steady, cut through the air like a card through silk. You stood just behind him, arms crossed, posture regal. Regal—not stiff, like Riddle’s often was, but naturally powerful. The kind of presence that didn’t need to command attention—it simply had it.
He turned at once. “Y/N.”
You raised a brow at him, an amused smile curling on your lips. You weren’t mocking—never that. But it was a smile that said, I’m watching you, my Queen. And Riddle flushed the moment he saw it.
“The poor guy looks ready to faint,” you murmured, nodding toward the first-year. “Maybe ease off the code recital just this once.”
“I—He’s been told twice already this week not to—”
You stepped closer, gently brushing a speck of dust from his sleeve. “And if you keep going, he’ll run headfirst into a hedge just to escape you. Not the ideal dorm morale.”
Riddle huffed, the air catching in his throat. “I don’t like it when rules are disregarded. But...”
You tilted your head. “But?”
He looked away, cheeks tinged pink. “But you make a fair point.”
You grinned. “Of course I do. I am your right hand.”
“Knave or King?” he muttered, still not looking at you.
You leaned closer, voice like velvet. “Whichever fits beside your throne best.”
That got him. He looked up at you, eyes wide, caught somewhere between flustered and spellbound. You always had that effect on him—where he was the one commanding respect and order from everyone else, you were the one person who stood with him, not under him. You knew the weight of responsibility, of loyalty, of being the one who kept the garden growing even while others trampled it.
“I…” Riddle began, then stopped. Words weren’t his forte when it came to feelings, but the way his fingers ghosted over yours told you enough.
You squeezed his hand gently and offered a quiet, “Come on. Let’s finish the garden check together.”
Riddle nodded. “Yes. Together.”
And as the two of you walked side by side, crimson and black cloaks brushing together in the breeze, the Heartslabyul students couldn’t help but whisper behind hedges and trellises:
“They’re perfect for each other.” “It’s like watching a king and queen walk the court.” “Or king and king. Or a knave and—shut up, semantics.”
But none of that mattered. Not to Riddle, not to you.
Because at the end of the day, it wasn’t about rules or titles. It was about loyalty. Understanding. The quiet, constant presence of someone who stood by you—not out of obligation, but because they chose you.
And Riddle Rosehearts, the ever-commanding Queen of Hearts reincarnate, had finally found someone who didn’t just follow the rules.
They wrote them with him.

I think Phoenix and Apollo make an excellent legal team because Phoenix is a human miracle machine in court and Apollo basically lives to do paperwork, which Phoenix cannot stand. Apollo could recite the entirety of the California Penal Code if pressed and Phoenix is convinced that the only classes of murder he needs to care about are "guilty" and "not guilty"
Phoenix pulls off a crazy turnabout and there's 600 pages of documents that need to be gone over and charges that need to be filed bc none of Phoenix’s cases are ever simple. It’s all extremely semantic nit-picky bullshit so Phoenix just hands the stack to Apollo who lights up like Phoenix just offered to buy him a puppy

Part 1
Part 2
Tumblr media
“We’re losing him!”
“Hold on, Obi-Wan. It’s not your time yet.”
“The infection is eating through the thyroid.”
“Stabilize him!”
“It’ll be alright, little one, don’t cry. Just squeeze my hand.”
“It’s attacking the mandible and sternum. Move, move!”
“It’s going to be alright.”
“Save what you can!”
“Hold on, Obi-Wan. Listen to the Force.”
The tears on Master Qui-Gon’s face looked strange. He had seen him cry before but never over him. It hurt to move his mouth, hurt even more to speak. Hurt— hurt a lot to speak. He wasn’t sure he was actually saying anything. But he tried because Master Qui-Gon looked devastated and Obi-Wan already had broken his heart by choosing to become a Shadow as soon as his return to the Temple was permanent. “The Force is with—“
Obi-Wan opens his eyes. Makes sure the mask is in place.
The rain still hasn’t ceased its steady downpour. He pulls Mace’s robe tight around himself. His own robe, seldom as he uses it, might have been lost on the battlefield where he had dropped it, but semantics. Mace’s spare robe squelches.
Obi-Wan will never be dry again.
Wings snap back into armored plates as the hyperjets power down, and Obi-Wan takes a bit of pleasure watching Cody land silently despite the mass of the clone armor.
“The siege is going well,” Cody says, tapping one of multiple antenna links on his helmet. Obi-Wan smiles under the mask. Quin and Bant have accused him many a times of having weird preferences, but the professionalism and calm control Cody so casually exudes is very, very attractive. The news makes him even more attractive. “Shouldn’t take longer than three months,” Cody continues, optimism apparent even with the vocoder.
Any kind of attraction spurning on Obi-Wan’s wet, frozen body drowns in the rain rather pityfully. “Three months,” he repeats in tap code where he’s gripping the robe.
The helmet turns to him fully. “Yes. It’s going really well.”
Obi-Wan strengthens his resolve to leech off any warmth Cody possesses when they crawl into bed after their shift.
.
“You can’t ever steal my voice,” Cody repeats in a murmur, fingertip stroking over the words on Obi-Wan’s forearm. He looks up to find blue eyes watching him over the mask. “Is that your sense of humor or your defiance speaking?”
The hand where he started tracing the letters moves back and forth, undecided. A little bit of both, then, Cody guesses.
The hand is retracted, flows so naturally into sign language. “Many tried.”
“Tried to steal your voice?” At Obi-Wan’s nod, Cody shuffles up the bed, re-categorizing the scars he’s seen. “No one was ever successful, I’m guessing.”
“Many broken bones on both sides,” is signed with a careless shrug before Obi-Wan turns serious, determination and the even more familiar defiance spinning Cody close. “I will only ever be silent of my own choosing.”
