Love Finds a Way - Hunter
Summary: Hunter thought that he lost you in the Jedi Purge. But then he sees a familiar face. Length: 2.6k Warnings: Mentions of Jedi Purge; Mentions of Death; Amnesia; Scars; Hunter's Undefined Heightened Senses; Hunter is Bad with Emotion; Angst; Female Jedi Reader
âDonât tell me you spared the padawan because of her,â Crosshair rasped.
The temperature in the Batch Batchâs barracks instantly dropped several degrees. Hunter continued to stand by the window, not dignifying him with a response. But the sharpshooter wasnât going to just drop it. Crosshair walked forward, not unlike a predator about to leap on its prey.
âSheâs a part of it, isnât she?â
âCrosshair, stop it,â Echo warned him, but Crosshair was not deterred.
âAre you willing to throw everything away for her? Turn your back on the Empire, on your brothers, on your purpose for her? A traitor?â
âSheâs not a traitor,â Hunter interjected, finally turning around. âShe fought for the Republic, just as we did. Side by side with us, with other clones, and there was never a word against her.â
âBut you were always her favorite pet, werenât you, Hunter?â
Crosshair squared up against his older brother, relishing in the hidden rage that he could see boiling beneath Hunterâs surface. The button was right there and Crosshair was going to press it over and over again. Until Hunter finally snapped.
âIf she was so popular, maybe the clones were kind enough to aim for her head.â
Hunterâs fist swung around and slammed into Crosshairâs gut, causing the sniper to fold over, clutching his stomach. But when Wrecker moved forward to break them up, Crosshair dared to grin at Hunter. Ready to deliver a second blow, Hunter silently glared at Crosshair. But then Wrecker grabbed and set Crosshair on his bed like a petulant child.
âTake it back, Crosshair,â Wrecker warned, pointing a finger at him. âShe was your friend too.â
Crosshair glared up at Wrecker before turning to look over at Hunter. But Hunter was too busy staring forlornly out the window at the Kaminoan storm. Probably wallowing in thoughts of her.
âPathetic,â Crosshair muttered under his breath, knowing that Hunter could hear him.
*~*~*~*
It was late, at least on a standard rotation cycle, and it was Hunterâs turn to be on watch. Sitting in front of the computer, he started to slowly type. Tech had hacked into the Imperial system earlier and gave Hunter instructions on how to navigate through the database. And now that Hunter was alone, he needed to do some investigating on his own.
Finding the list of Jedi, Hunter scrolled down it with a heavy heart, wincing when he saw familiar names. Continuing on, he paused when he found the name that he was looking for. Your name. And then his eyes landed on the big, bold, red word beside it.
TERMINATED
Hunter closed his eyes and leaned back in his chair, the fight leaving his body. He sat there, wallowing in pain, before sitting up again. And even though he knew that it wasnât healthy, he clicked on the report.
The clones under your command had attacked you while you were pursuing Separatist stragglers who crash landed on an Outer Rim planet. You managed to get away from them and stole a speeder, which they then shot down. You crashed into a lake and your body was never recovered.
Hunter stared at the hologram image of you that accompanied the report. You looked stoic, cold, and calculating. Completely unlike the woman that Hunter knew. But he supposed that erasing the Jediâs compassion and humanity was just another part of the Empireâs propaganda. Â
âWhoâs that?â Omega called from her perch, causing Hunter to look up at her.
âJust a Jedi that we used to serve under,â Hunter explained softly, looking back at the hologram. âI thought that there was a chance that she was still out there.â Hunter powered off the computer and turned back to Omega. âWhat are you doing up? Did you have a nightmare?â
âNot really,â Omega stated with a shrug of her shoulders. âIs your friend still out there?â
âNo, it doesnât look like it,â Hunter replied quietly.
âIâm sorry, Hunter.â
He nodded curtly, forcing a smile to urge Omega back to sleep. But when Tech awoke to take over watch, he found his brother staring at your hologram again.
*~*~*~*
âIt is unlikely that we would run into any Imperial entanglements out here,â Tech stated, leading the way down the stairs of the Marauder. âThis planet is mostly farmers and not ones that provide any product of high value. Mostly standard grains.â
âDoes that mean that they have food?â Wrecker sighed, rubbing his stomach.
âI would assume so, yes,â Tech replied, typing away at his datapad.
âLetâs go explore then!â Omega exclaimed, running down the gangplank. âYou said that the largest city is right there, Tech?â
âThe term âcityâ might be inaccurate given the low population density, number of buildings, and other indicators of a traditional urban center,â Tech stated, not looking up from his typing. âBut, yes, the closest organization to a city is in that standard direction.â
Echo and Hunter pulled up the rear of the group as they headed into town. Echo glanced worriedly at Hunter. He had been quiet ever since Tech mentioned this planet and even Omega hadnât been able to pull him out of his brooding. And a quick check of the Imperial database clarified why. At least, if one knew where to look.
âAre you alright?â Echo asked Hunter as they walked towards the city.
âIâll be fine.â
âYou should try to learn to be convincing before Omega asks you that,â Echo replied quietly.
Hunter sighed and looked down at the dirt path. They walked in silence for a few more moments, both keeping a close eye on Omega, before Hunter finally let some of the load off of his shoulders.
âI have the coordinates. For where it happened.â
âHow far is it from here?â
âTwo hours by speeder.â
âWhenever you feel that youâre ready to go,â Echo stated gently, keeping his voice low, âjust give me a signal. Iâll distract the others.â
âThank you, Echo.â
They reached town and looked around at the various stalls and short buildings scattered around. There were a few supplies that they needed and so the Bad Batch split up. Hunter walked off on his own, searching for some part that Tech knew that this small planet would not have. But it allowed him some time to think, or brood, so he didnât mind.
Hunter walked around the small mechanic market in the village, at least trying to look like he was putting in effort to find the part. He was in the middle of inspecting a part for sale, which wasnât the one that he had been sent for, when a voice broke through the mist and clutched his heart.
âCan I get you anything?â
With his advanced hearing, Hunter was accustomed to tuning out the useless background noise and focusing on only what he needed or wanted to hear. And normally, he tried to block out the useless background conversations.
But yet that voice stuck out. Its familiarity haunted him and Hunter found his legs moving on their own, following that voice like it was a siren song.
âByn, Table 3 is asking for more of the soup.â
âDid you want another napkin?â
âCan I get you a refill?â
âThanks for coming!â
Following the voice, Hunter paused when he turned the corner and found an open-aired restaurant. There were a cluster of tables spread out in front of a white tent. There were some customers milling around, but it was mostly quiet.
And then there you were, appearing with the sun glowing behind you. It was you. He knew it was you. It had to be you.
Even though you wore civilian clothes now, he knew that it was you. Even though your hair was shorter now, he knew that it was you. Even though there was now a jagged scar across your cheek, he knew that it was you. And when you turned your head and he finally caught a glimpse of your eyes, his knees nearly buckled under him.
It was you. You were here. You were alive.
âHunter?â Techâs voice cut in, jolting Hunter out of his thoughts. âHunter, do you copy?â
âI can hear you,â Hunter finally responded, pressing the button on his commlink.
âAre you alright? It took three tries for you to respond,â Echo pointed out, causing Hunter to look over at you again.
âMeet me at my coordinates. Iâll explain when you get here.â
Soon the Bad Batch took their seats at a table in the open-aired restaurant. Hunterâs legs bounced nervously as he waited for you to walk over, earning worried looks from Echo and Omega at his unusually anxious fiddling. Omega had only been given a brief overview of your history with the Bad Batch, as she was never there to witness it in person, but it was easy to see how important you were from Hunterâs reaction. She had never seen him like this before.
You walked over to their table with a polite customer service smile. Hunter held his breath, waiting for you to recognize himâhow many men had half of a skull tattooed on their face? Or of Wreckerâs size? But as you passed out menus and treated them like any other patrons, Hunter felt his hope quickly dash.
âWelcome. Iâll be your waitress. Here are some menus. If you have any questions, Iâll be happy to answer them for you. Otherwise, Iâll give you a minute to look it over.â
You gave them another kind smile before walking off without even a small trace of recognition for any of them. Hunter stared after you with a broken expression.
âShe didnât recognize us?â Wrecker asked softly.
âThere is still a statistical possibility that our waitress is not her,â Tech pointed out calmly.
âItâs her. She smells just like her. I know it. I know thatâs her,â Hunter insisted, causing Tech and Echo to share a concerned look.
âThen why didnât she recognize you?â Omega asked quietly, voice barely above a whisper.
âI donât know.â
*~*~*~*
âYou ever seen those patrons before?â Byn, the head chef of the restaurant, asked you as you loaded up another order onto your serving tray.
âNo, why?â
âThey seem to have a staring problem. Especially dark and broody.â
You glanced back at the table in question. The Bad Batch, once they realized that you were staring at them, quickly turned back to their meals, trying to appear normal. Save for Hunter, that is, whose gaze lingered, until Echo elbowed him stiffly in the side. Turning back to Byn, the man who had taken you in after your accident, you shrugged your shoulders.
âTheyâre probably just staring at my scar,â you mumbled, adjusting the plates on your tray.
âYou let me know if they say anything to you.â
âIâll be fine. Iâm a big girl. I can handle them.â
Walking over to their table again, you placed down some of their plates, before turning around to grab the rest. But feeling Hunterâs gaze on you again, you turned around briefly, holding your serving tray to your chest. Echo once again elbowed Hunter in the side, causing the sergeant to turn to him with a sour expression.
âYouâre going to scare her away if you keep staring at her like that,â Echo reminded Hunter quietly.
âI canât help it.â
âWell, try to, before she calls the authorities on a man who looks like he wants to eat her.â
When you returned a second time, you placed a plate down in front of Tech and then Hunter. He thanked you quietly, causing you to nod and smile. Placing Omegaâs plate down last, you turned to conduct your rounds of the tables.
âWhat do we do?â Omega asked Hunter, who was still staring after you. âShe doesnât recognize you. How do we get her to do that?â
âBased on the report of her supposed demise, it would not be out of the question that she likely suffered severe injuries as a result of the crash,â Tech began to infodump. âIf that woman actually is her, then she clearly sustained trauma to her face, as demonstrated by the large scar on her cheek. It would therefore follow logically that she may have sustained head trauma in the crash as well, which would explain why she does not appear to recognize us.â
âSo, thereâs still a chance that she could get her memories back,â Omega suggested, but Tech did not look convinced.
âI am not certain. Head injuries are not simple to treat. And if that woman is in fact her, she would have been without her memories for several months now. And I would assume that given the simplistic nature of life on this planet that she was never properly treated at a professional medical facility for her injuries, which would likely exacerbate her memory loss and other symptoms.â
âGet to the point, Tech,â Wrecker grunted out.
âIt is a possibility, perhaps even a high one, that she might never recover her memories. In part or in full.â
âBut we have to try,â Omega insisted, slowly turning back to Hunter. âDonât we?â
âI would raise an ethical concern about doing so,â Tech stated, adjusting his goggles.
âAnd what would that be?â Echo asked gruffly.
âIf we are able to restore her memories, that will include the ones where clone troopers attacked and nearly killed her. And we will also have to inform her that her entire culture and civilization were destroyed along with most of the people she considered her family and that she will never again be safe in the galaxy as a Force wielder.â
Hunter stared down at his plate as Tech continued on with his explanation.
âWhile restoring her memories may provide us with a satisfactory outcome, she does not appear to be in distress here. As far as we can see, her other symptoms are not affecting her quality of life. And as the Empire has her listed as deceased in their database and she is seemingly unaware of her abilities, she is safe here. On the other hand, if she comes with us, there is a very high statistical probability that she will not be.â
âMaybe so, but is that our decision to make?â Echo pointed out, causing everyone to turn to him. âBecause speaking as the only person here whoâs actually forgotten who they were, and not by choice, I wouldnât choose peaceful ignorance over the truth.â
âWell, what would she want?â Omega inquired, looking up at Hunter. He turned his head to meet her gaze, but couldnât find the words.
âHow is everything over here?â you asked kindly, walking over to the table.
âCan I ask you something?â Omega questioned suddenly, causing you to turn to her.
âSure.â
âIf you have the choice between remembering everything from your lifeâeven all of the bad stuffâor not remembering anything but being happy, which would you pick?â
You froze at her question, tensing up as the scar on your face burned. Sensing your unease, and after working through his own shock at her question, Hunter scolded Omega.
âShe didnât mean any harm by it,â Hunter tried to assure you.
âOh, no, itâs fine,â you laughed off, waving your hand. âLet me know if you need anything else.â
You walked away and carried on with your work. But you couldnât help but raise your hand to your scar as it continued to pulsate and burn after Omegaâs question. Glancing over your shoulder at the Bad Batch, you found your eyes landing on the dark and brooding figure who looked exhausted and dejected. You looked down at the dirt, feeling responsible somehow. But then Byn called your name and you had to go back to work.
*~*~*~*
Night had fallen on the quaint planet and Hunter sat outside of the Marauder, mindlessly whittling at a piece of wood with his vibro knife to pass the time. He tried sleeping, but after tossing and turning a thousand times, he decided for a change of scene. Hunter studied the design that he carved when he heard a speeder in the distance. Standing up from his seat, Hunter stared out at the night landscape with narrowed eyes.
A speeder came to a stop a few meters from the Marauder and Hunter crept forward, moving to intercept the figure. But when he smelled your familiar scent, he paused. Stowing his vibro knife away, Hunter stepped into the light emitted from your speeder. You set your helmet and goggles on the seat of the speeder bike before turning to meet his gaze.
âCan I help you with something?â he asked quietly.
âYou tell me.â You stared at him with a familiar fire in your eyes. âYou know who I am, donât you?â
âYes,â he confirmed softly after a moment.
âGood,â you stated, resting your hands on your lap. âBecause I donât.â

Sniffles (Sergeant Hunter x Reader)
Notes: No warnings. This is My attempt to make Hunter as pathetic as possible. sick fic, Hunter gets the common cold and reacts accordingly as any man would.
"Help!" a rapid pounding at your door interrupted your peaceful morning.
You opened the door to find Omega standing there, fidgeting something fierce.
"Omega, what's wrong? Is everyone okay?"
"Somethings wrong with Hunter," Omega said nervously, "I woke up to a really loud noise, almost like an explosion, and I heard moaning from his room. He sounds hurt!"
You took a deep breath. Panicking wouldn't help Omega.
"Stay here I'll go check on him." You grabbed your medkit and started up the path towards the house Omega and Hunter shared.
You opened the door, painted red. It was one of the charming touches Hunter had made to the home that you absolutely adored.
"Hunter?"
A loud sneeze almost shook the house. That must have been what had woken Omega. You pressed further, searching for his bedroom. On his bed, you found a mountain of blankets, shuddering slightly under the light streaming in from the window.
"Oh Hunter," You sighed, but smiled, picking your way through the battlefield of used tissues that littered the floor.
"Day back," A shaky hand emerged from beneath the blankets, a warning, "I'm dying."
"Hunt-" You started to giggle, and then you couldn't stop.
"'S nod fuddy," Hunter insisted, but the way he sounded with a stuffed nose only made you laugh more.
"Who would have thought," You laughed, removing a couple of blankets from the top of the pile, "Sergeant Hunter of Clone Force Ninety-nine laid low by the common cold."
Hunter huffed, throwing off the last of the blankets, "Dere id nudding common aboud dis!"
His face was pale, his dark tattoo contrasting sharly against his sickly looking skin. He reached for another tissue and blew his nose loudly.
"Have you ever had a cold before?" you asked.
"No!" Hunter moaned and fell back against the pillows, "Clones are'd supposed do ged sick!" he grabbed a blanket and wrapped it around himself, burying his face in his pillow.
"How long has it been since you've seen a doctor?" You asked. He muttered something unintelligible.
"Why is id so brighd?" He muttered.
You closed the curtains for him. "Migraines can be a side effect of colds."
"Gread." he sighed.
You held out the box of tissues. Hunter bravely stuck a hand out from the blanket, groping for one to blow his nose with.
"Take one of these," You took a bottle of pills out of your medkit and placed it in the table next to his bed, "I'll be right back."
In the kitchen, you filled Hunter's canteen with water and started warming some broth on the stove top.
The door slammed open, and Wrecker filled the room with his booming voice.
"Is Hunter okay?" He demanded. Crosshair and Omega filed in behind him.
"Woah Woah Woah," You held up your hands, blocking them from going down the hall, "He's fine, he's just got a cold."
"Are you certain?" Crosshair tried to push past you.
"I'm very certain," You rolled your eyes and gave him a shove. In spite of your assurances, Hunter moaned from down the hall once again, blowing his nose rather obnoxiously.
"He sounds like he's dying," Crosshair folded his arms.
"He's not, I promise. He just needs some rest and some decongestant. His sinuses are so clogged they're putting pressure on his head and making him sick. Hell be fine within two days."
"Hey Hunter!" Wrecker hollared down the hall, "Can I have your knife when you're dead?"
"No!" Hunter shouted, his voice gravely. He fell into a fit of coughing from talking so harshly.
"I dibs the bandanas," Cross hissed.
"Whad was dat?" Hunter stumbled into the doorway, the blanket around his shoulders resembling more of a cocoon than a heroic cape. The cold was taking its toll on his senses.
"That's it. Out, all of you!" You shoved Crosshair back towards the door.
"Can I help?" Omega pleaded.
"Sorry honey, we don't want you getting sick. Or you!" You tried in vain to drag Wrecker out the door with the others.
"But he's not dying?" Omega asked once more for reassurance.
"No he's not. Don't listen to your brothers. Go hang out with Lyanna for the day. I'll let you know when he's all better."
Wrecker finally moped out of the house, and you slammed the door shut behind them, locking it for good measure. By now, the broth you'd left on the stove top was starting to simmer, but Hunter was still standing in the doorway of the bedroom.
"Back to bed. Now." You pointed at him.
"How come you are'd worried aboud gedding sick?" He asked, swaying a bit.
You rolled your eyes and placed his arm over your shoulder, escorting him back to bed.
"I've gotten a cold plenty of times before. I know how to deal with it. But if you're gonna act like a baby about it, I can only imagine how Wrecker would get with it."
"I'd nod a baby." Hunter pouted as you all but dropped him on the bed. You pushed him back, spreading the blanket over his body.
"I'll grab the soup and some water. You take the medicine yet?"
Hunter nodded, eyes half-closed. "Tasted terrible."
You laughed softly, and pressed your lips to his forehead. His skin was clammy to the touch.
"Medicine usually does, Hunt."
You brought back the food, along with a damp cloth to wash his face. You fed him, spoonful by spoonful, until he'd fallen back to an uneasy sleep. You braided his hair to keep it off his face, and left the cloth on his forehead to let the humidity break up some of the blockage.
As Hunter slept, you busied yourself with making sure he had enough supplies to ride out the cold. You went and bought some more tissues and broth, and packed an overnight bag for Omega to have at Lyanna's place.
You stopped by your house to grab some of your own things, and noticed the book sitting on the shelf. Hunter had bought it for you as a birthday present, but you hadn't gotten the chance to read it yet. Maybe you could read it to him.
When you returned after your errands, Hunter was sitting up in the bed, taking sips from the canteen.
"Where'd you go?" He asked, looking something like a kicked puppy as you returned to his bedroom.
"Just grabbing a few things," You placed a fresh box of tissues on the table to replace the empty one. You made a mental note to grab the trash can and clean up the floor later.
Hunter nodded, sinking back into the pillows. "I missed you," He mumbled apologetically.
Your heart melted just a little bit.
"Missed you too," You smiled, and kissed his forehead again

âAll right.â
Hunterâs voice, modulated by his helmet, broke through your silent reverie as you finished your weapons check. You looked up to face him and instantly, your jaw locked up. This certainly wasnât close to the first time youâd seen him in his armor, and it was likely far from the last, but today⌠it was hitting different.
âDoes everyone remember the plan?â
Hunterâs visor looked around the group. You couldnât peel your gaze from him, and when his visor found you, he didnât look away, either. It was only when Tech spoke up that the two of you shifted your attention to him. âConsidering that you briefed us on the plan only a standard hourâs time ago, I would confidently say that yes. We remember.â He began tapping around on his datapad once again. âWe ought to get moving if we would like to make any progress.â
âGood call, Tech.â Hunter nodded at him. âAre comms being monitored?â
âIt doesnât appear so at the moment.â Tech glanced up from his datapad to return Hunterâs nod. âThat is why I suggested we move in.â
âRight.â Hunter led the way, and you were more than happy to keep your eyes on him. You blinked a few times and shook your head. There was a time and place for admiring him, and a mission wasnât one of them.
But the lack of privacy the two of you always had to deal with left no luxury of picking and choosing when such feelings and urges would arise. You had to take any chance you could get, even if that meant your admiration would happen during a risky job.
Hunter led the group through the foliage that surrounded the hangar you were infiltrating. Cid had you chasing some kind of valuable fuel, but unlike Tech, you had somewhat drifted off during the briefing and knew next to nothing else about it. You couldnât help it when the glow of the holoprojector had started to illuminate the golden flecks in Hunterâs eyes. He was more important than the plan in that moment.
It wasnât long before there was a break in the trees, and Hunter crouched down before motioning for the rest of you to do the same. You werenât far behind him, which gave you the chance to watch the steady rise and fall of his armored shoulders as he focused on observing the wide stretch of the open hangar.
âSunny?â Omegaâs voice whispered your nickname to get your attention. You leaned down to show her you were listening, despite the fact your gaze remained on Hunter. âDo you see something?â
You huffed and offered her a sweet look. âNothing out of the ordinary, Omega.â
âOh, okay.â Omega gave you a small smile. âYou just looked really focused.â She gestured to her own forehead, and thatâs when you realized there was a small knit of focus in your brow.
You fought the urge to laugh as your ears burned. âIâm only keeping an eye out. Itâs a little eerie around here.â
âYou can say that again,â Echo muttered from your other side. âIâm not liking this.â
âYou say that about every job!â Wrecker reminded him.
Hunterâs helmet whipped around as he lifted a finger over where his mouth would be. âQuiet.â
You inhaled a breath and didnât let go of it. It sat in your chest as you hung on his every move, your gaze zeroing in on his gloved fingers as they took some of the dirt and sifted it in a slow and steady motion. Then came your exhale, along with a slight tightening of your hand upon your own thigh as you kept yourself in place.
âThe cargoâs on the other side of the hangar.â Hunter kept his voice low as he addressed the squad once again. You looked at him through your lashes as an attempt to keep your gaze focused on something other than him. Obviously, it hadnât worked. âI can sense where theyâre using it.â He drew his blaster and nodded. âLetâs head in.â
Hunter wasted no time leading the way yet again. He was sliding down the slight decline that separated the foliage from the furthest edges of the hangar, and you shouldâve been following. Instead, you assured everyone you would bring up the rear, just so you could finish watching him. When he reached the ground, he stayed low, but you saw his visor find you as he gestured with his head for you to come down next.
You pulled your blaster and obeyed, this time staying attentive to what you were doing for fear of misstepping and losing your footing. When you reached the bottom, an outstretched hand was already there to help you up. You took it and made the sweet mistake of looking up, meeting the intensity of Hunterâs visor that never once left your gaze as one easy tug got you back onto your feet.
He didnât let go of your hand, not right away. You couldâve melted right there if his sense of duty didnât pull him back to the moment.
With a lingering touch, he pulled away and checked on the rest of the group, who had all just gotten back into position on their feet. âOkay. Plan seventy-two.â He pointed to the right side of the hangar. âEcho, Wrecker, and Omega, youâre on the diversion. Tech,â he turned his helmet, âyouâre with me and Sunny.â He gestured to the extractor on Techâs belt. âHow much time will you need?â
Tech clicked around on his datapad before answering. âNot much. It seems that this type of fuel responds well to extraction, and thanks to my keen ability to handle such delicate operations, I should only need a standard minute or two to complete the procedure.â
Hunter nodded, then his visor found Echo. You still hadnât looked away from him, not even once, and so your gaze didnât follow his as he looked at the ARC trooper. âEcho?â
âIâll trigger an alarm to reroute forces.â Echo gestured to the collection of ships by their designated area. âThere should be a scomp over there.â
âAnd if that doesnât work, Iâll blow something up,â Wrecker assured the squad.
âFine,â Hunter agreed, setting his weight on his hip and lifting his arm to point his blaster at the ground. âJust make sure Omegaâs fully out of the blast range this time.â
You bit back your smile. Protective. Omega had been quite far away from Wreckerâs last blast, but that hadnât been enough for Hunter, of course. It only made the warmth within your chest and stomach burn more as you gave him a once-over that was dangerously obvious.
When your gaze had risen back up to his helmet, you realized his visor was already on youâand it likely had been the entire time. He began to tilt his helmet at you, but you couldnât tell if it was a look of warning or a look of reciprocated desire.
âHunter, we need to get going.â Techâs voice broke through your brief trance as Hunterâs visor snapped over to his brother. âIf we delay much longer, their diversion will be for nothing.â
Both you and Hunter looked to see that Echo, Wrecker, and Omega had already left. So much for being subtle. You could take the blame for that one. âRight.â Hunter lifted his blaster and ran ahead, sticking to the shadows as you and Tech did the same.
You were inside the hangar and running between cargo crates when Hunter suddenly raised his fist and began to back up behind one of the crates. The momentum from your running nearly made you run right into him, but without missing a beat, Hunter lowered his hand to reach behind himself and grab your thigh to steady you. He pressed you between his hand and the crate, keeping his grasp there until the small patrol of guards passed by.
Tech had already made it to the next crate, and he kept an eye out as Hunter slowly swung his helmet to face you. His voice was low in a tone he would never use with the others as he spoke to you. âYou okay? You seem⌠distracted.â
You played it coy as you nodded. âYeah, Hunter, Iâm fine. Why wouldnât I be?â
His helmet tilted again, but he said nothing for a moment. Instead, he returned your nod and leaned even closer. âGood. Keep that focus.â His hand gave your thigh a quick squeeze before he began to follow in Techâs footsteps.
You blinked a few times before following. There was no way Hunter realized how difficult it would be to follow that order, especially when he was behaving in such a wayâwhich, you supposed, was just the normal way he acted on every mission. Somehow, that made it even worse.
At one point, Tech stopped behind another crate, looking at Hunter behind him. âAre we close to the fuel source?â
Hunter didnât answer right away, and it wasnât hard to tell why. He was focusing on his senses, and he helped himself to lock in even more by kneeling down and setting his palm upon the hangarâs floor. You watched as his gloved fingers gently splayed across the floor, and you had to circle your jaw to fight the flushing feeling it brought you. âWeâre close.â Hunter rose up and pointed with two fingers to a cargo crate diagonal from your position. âIt should be just beyond there.â
Tech nodded, taking a cautious look before he launched forward. You and Hunter followed, with you trailing just behind Hunter. It was a view you couldnât resist, even if you were arguably focusing on where you were going. There had to be a way of following Hunterâs gentle order while also obeying your demanding heart.
Once you had gotten to the crate Hunter had pointed out before, the fuel source became more obvious. It glowed a bright green as it bubbled inside its transparisteel container. You, unsurprisingly, stared at Hunter as his visor studied it for a moment. âAre you gonna need help with that, Tech?â
âI will assume that is not an insult and kindly reject your offer,â Tech assured him. âLike I said before,â he took the extractor from his belt, âI have a keen ability for such delicate operations.â
Before anyone could say anything else, a blaring alarm sounded throughout the hangar. The three of you stayed concealed in the shadow of the cargo crate as guards began to run from their posts over to where Echo, Wrecker, and Omega were luring them. After three groups of guards had gone by, Hunter nodded at Tech, and he made his way over to the container to extract the fuel.
And even then, you couldnât look at anything except the small sliver of skin that became apparent by Hunterâs chin as he surveyed the area to watch Techâs back. You shouldâve been doing the same, and you did every once in a while, but the pull back to Hunter was magnetic, as if he was a constant pulse you couldnât stop sensing.
Hunterâs visor eventually found you again, and he slightly eased his grip on his blaster as he tilted his helmet. âSunny.â He gestured with his blaster to your surroundings. âYouâre supposed to be keeping watch.â
You huffed. âI am watching.â It was true; you were watching something, just not what you were supposed to be. The way you peeled your gaze away from him for the moment, though, was enough to convince Hunter.
Just as Tech had promised, he was quick with the extraction, and he was soon joining you and Hunter once again with the fuel secured on his belt. âThe extraction is complete.â
âGood work, Tech.â Hunter looked over at his brother and nodded. âGet back to the ship and power it up. Sunny and I will go help the others.â
Both yours and Techâs eyebrows shot up at that. It made no sense; Hunter could easily call them off over the comms. Tech seemed to have the same thought, and he spoke on it before you could. âComms still are not being monitored, Hunter. We canâ.â
âThatâs an order, Tech.â Hunterâs tone left no room for argument.
Tech sighed, nodding once more before he backtracked the way you had all come. You were still furrowing your brow at Hunter, who was beginning to lurk out from the other end of the cargo crate. âHunter, whatâs going on?â
He glanced back at you and gestured with his head to a long set of cargo crates. âThis way.â
Your confusion grew, but there was no point in questioning him. You followed him over to the crates and waited to line yourself up along its shadows. Instead, Hunterâs arm seized your waist, and he pulled you into the small space left between the two looming cargo crates.
Before you could fully make sense of it, you realized you were trapped between one of the crates and Hunterâs body, one of his hands still on your waist as the other, with his blaster, was pressed against the crate by your head. You could only look at him in awe as he spoke. âWhy did you lie to me?â
You blinked a few times, and the tips of your ears began to burn. âWhat are you talking about?â
Hunter said your real name, his voice still low as he leaned even closer. You swallowed hard as the heat of his body washed over you in the sweetest wave. âYouâve been staring at me ever since the briefing.â He lifted his hand from your waist only to grab the lip of his helmet and lift it over his head. Your breath caught in your lungs at the sight of his gaze, which was darkened in the same amount of desire you felt for him. âDid you really think I wouldnât notice?â
You shrugged, giving him a once-over just like before. âI thought your senses mightâve been⌠otherwise occupied.â
Hunter raised his brow. âTrust me, my senses are working overtime.â His arm wrapped around the side of your waist, even as he continued to hold his helmet in that grasp. âBut only because theyâre so committed to you that they refuse to let me focus on anything else when youâre around.â
You looked between his eyes and his lips, caught in your conflict between the invisible tether that brought you closer to him and the rest of the galaxy that was still in chaos around you. âHunter,â you breathed his name, and at that point, your breath was fanning right over his lips. Your hands betrayed your weak protest as they wove themselves into his hair. âThe mission.â
âThe mission.â Hunter repeated your words and let the corner of his mouth rise in a smug smile. âItâs giving us the two things we never have: time,â his lips brushed your own, âand privacy.â
You couldnât resist him. It didnât matter how bad of an idea it was, and it certainly didnât matter that you were at risk of being seen by anyone in the vicinity should they get curious. All that mattered was him, the man you had been staring at this entire time, and the fact that the warmth of his mouth and his body was on you in all the ways youâd been wanting for much too long.
All at once, he flooded your senses, from the touch of his hair on your hands to the pleased hum that he breathed into you. It was hard to separate each desperate move you made together, and even more impossible to count the seconds or minutes that ticked by as his tongue explored your mouth as if heâd never have the chance to do so again. It was breathless, passionate, and desperate all at once, with the adrenaline of the mission only adding to the sweet chaos that kept you going back for more time and time again.
Eventually, your lungs demanded air, but somehow Hunterâs didnât need the same luxury. His lips grazed down to your neck to let you practically gasp for air underneath the hot warmth of his mouth. Each exhale you managed was dedicated to him, utterances of his name or simple breaths and sweet curses. You willed your lungs to take in enough air so you could have his lips on yours again, and soon, they allowed you to take a hold of his jaw and raise it enough for you to bring yourself back to him.
Your surroundings had long since disappeared in the haze of your affection, but for Hunter, that would never be a reality. Thatâs how he noticed the guard who had stopped at the place where the two of you had entered and was able to lift, aim, and stun them without missing even a single matching stroke of your tongue.
It only made your knees weaken even more.
But that distraction was enough to make the galaxy around you louder in your roaring ears, and with Hunterâs helmet just behind your back, you were able to hear the muffled voices of your squad. With a strength you never realized you were capable of, you pulled yourself away from him and spoke between pants. âThe comms,â you managed. âYour helmet.â
Hunter tightened his jaw, unraveling his arm from your waist to set his helmet over his head. He kept two fingers on the side of it, and the slight tilt of his head made you hold back a giggle as you smoothed out the wrinkles in your clothes as well as in Hunterâs scarf. âWeâre not far behind,â Hunter insisted. âWe were just on our way to your position.â You playfully rolled your eyes at his lie as he finished. âWeâll head back to the ship.â
As he lowered his hand, you raised your brow. âWhoâs the liar now?â
Hunter sighed, his hand brushing over your back as he nodded. âCome on, love. Letâs go.â
Your chest burned with a lovely ache at the nickname as the two of you stepped over the stunned guard and retreated back to the Marauder. Your pace never slowed, and thanks to the diversion Echo, Wrecker, and Omega had pulled off, you didnât have to worry about being seen by any more guards. It wasnât long before the two of you reached the ship, which the others had only just arrived to themselves.
âOkay, Tech,â Hunter called to his brother in the cockpit after heâd done a quick headcount. âGet us out of here.â
As Tech initiated takeoff, Omega approached you, her brow furrowed in concern. You instantly got down to her level as she met your gaze. âSunny, what happened?â Omega gave you a worried once-over. âDid you get hurt?â
You lifted an eyebrow at her. âWhat do you mean, Omega?â
Omega pointed towards the cockpit. âTech said on the comms that you and Hunter were coming to meet us, but you never did.â
You fought the warmth that attempted to enter your face as you instead reassured her with a smile. âWe just got sidetracked, thatâs all. There were a few lingering guards.â
âReally?â The sound of Echoâs voice caused you to look up at him. His expression was much too mischievous for your liking. âThatâs surprising.â
Hunter was the one to speak up for you. His tone was coated in caution as he lifted his helmet from his head. âWhy?â
Echo leaned against the back of the nearest chair. âBecause that alarm I set off was supposed to summon every guard to our post.â
Hunter set his helmet down and crossed his arms over his chest. âWell, it didnât.â
Echoâs brow shot up. âAre you sure about that?â
âHunter is telling the truth.â Tech emerged from the cockpit, having already gotten the Marauder into hyperspace. âI saw him stun a guard not far from the fuel supply while he and Sunny were engaged in a passionate kiss.â
Your jaw dropped, and your heart went right with it. Hunter froze beside you, and Echoâs lips stretched in a shit-eating grin as Wrecker broke the stunned silence first. âA what?â He shuffled Omega in front of himself and covered her ears with his hands. She glanced up at him with confusion.
Tech furrowed his brow. âDoes that information surprise you?â
âIt doesnât surprise you?â Echo remarked. Meanwhile, you had slightly turned your head towards Hunter, hoping you could somehow hide yourself from this awkward tension.
âEach part of what I have said is rational to me,â Tech explained. âOne guard stayed behind with the fuel supply, and Hunter and Sunny have never been subtle with their own relationship. It makes utter and complete sense for them to take advantage of a moment spent alone when we have constantly been around them for many rotations.â
The Marauder had never been more silent. You sighed and rested your hand against your forehead as you spoke. âThank you for that, Tech.â
Hunter subtly brushed a hand over your back to soothe you as he spoke up next. âI thought you were going back to the ship.â
âI only returned when you were not answering my comm,â Tech argued. âI was attempting to warn you about the lingering guard.â
âWe wouldâve realized what happened anyway,â Echo insisted. He looked between the two of you and drew a circle around his own mouth. âLips donât lie.â
You and Hunter glanced at each other, and it was hard to bite back a smile of amusement when you realized Echo was right. The intensity of your kiss was left behind in evidence on his mouth, and you were sure your ownâand possibly even your neckâwas just as bad, if not worse.
âWe still achieved the objective,â Tech reminded you all. âSo what ought to be learned here is that⌠well, perhaps we should let the two of you have more privacy outside the bounds of a mission.â
Hunter raised his brow at you, and your smile spoke for you before he responded. âThat would be nice.â
âYeah.â You brought yourself just a step closer to his side. âThat would be nice.â
But deep down, you both knew the truth; you would do it all over again on the next mission if it meant recreating even a fraction of the moment you had just shared.

Hi, Zoey! Are your requests open? I had an idea after watching Kenobi.
Thereâs a scene in Kenobi where the Inquisitors show up to a market place in search of Jedi. They throw a knife at the shop owner knowing that the Jedi hiding among the patrons will stop the knife from harming him. It would be interesting to see that with Hunter.
Maybe Hunter and Cidâs bartender have a relationship. Bartender was weary of the clones at first but warmed up to them and liked Hunter. They just started dating when Inquisitors show up. They use the knife trick on someone (maybe even Omega) and bartender is forced to expose themselves as a former Jedi.
Iâd love to see how Hunter would react to that.
oh oh oh oh... I got something in my head!
*Running in circles*
I actually had a scene like this in my head for a while now, I put the whole batch in there but focus on Hunter as a love interest.
Hunter x Jedi/Reader - One-Shot - The Things We Do For Love
Warnings: Angst/Canon Typical Violence/Blood/Fluff
No one knows about your past with the Jedi order. You are forced to drop your cover, when you try to save Hunter's life.
_______
Ko-Fi (If you feel like giving me some coffee)
_______
It's strange, life after Order 66 - hiding, pretending to be someone else. And it doesn't get any easier every day as you'd hoped, at least not at first. Cid's Bar, that's where you ended up at some point. You work behind the counter. You serve all kinds of strange clientele. Cid's Bar is like a meeting place for all kinds of scum in the Galaxy. Life has changed, a lot. Priorities change. The code after you've lived so long is nowhere near as important as surviving and belonging somewhere so you're not completely alone in this universe. But you can't open up to anyone, not exactly the most decent people come and go here. So you keep a low profile. You even flirt here and there to keep up appearances, but at the same time, you keep everyone at a distance. And then, to make matters worse, these clones turn up. Automatically, every alarm sounds inside you. Order 66 flares up in your memory, sharp and painful. It takes so much willpower to stay calm, to not let anything get to you, so much trauma hangs in every thought of clones. No one knows who you are, no one even suspects that you were part of the Jedi Order.
And yet these men surprise you, especially one of them who leads the group. He is so thoughtful, so serious. Hunter always seems to be lost in thought, trying to keep everything under control, to ensure safety. He rarely leans back and really takes a breath. He's almost always worried and tense, you can feel it in the Force. But eventually, he thaws out, you somehow strike up a conversation, and you quickly learn how much depth and kindness lie beneath that brooding, skeptical exterior. Hunter can even be funny, very observant and above all else, he's decent, probably one of the most decent people to ever come and go in this bar. You catch yourself admiring him. Your eyes meet more and more often, you talk to each other more often, even flirt. But this flirting is different, it's not fake, it feels real, exciting and for you, with your past, completely new and almost reckless. You are both obviously interested in each other, just as you are both shy and cautious in a certain way. Weeks, even months go by before your hands touch for the first time, and he asks you out.
You can see it in his face, he can hardly believe it himself, hidden behind his smile is a nervous boy who is incredibly afraid of being rejected by you. The big, brooding leader has a great weakness, you. Of course, you say yes, you can hardly resist this special man, clone soldier or not, Hunter has so much good in him, he attracts you like a magnet, not to mention his good, bold looks do the rest.
It starts like any other evening. More or less. After your first date, Hunter usually comes into the bar smiling, automatically seeking your gaze as soon as he walks through the door. You can't help it, you smile back every time, accompanied by a warm tingling in your stomach, warmth rising in your cheeks and ears.
But something is different today. There is a presence in the room, dark, determined, hard as stone, surrounded by sharp edges. You sense this presence in the Force, its intransigence. You look around in alarm. The bar is a little busier today, your gaze wanders more or less inconspicuously around the room. Then you see him. You meet cold eyes, eyes as blue as sapphires, their gaze steely and sharp, so intense that you automatically lower your own gaze and distractedly clean a glass. But you know this person has already noticed you. Right now you're feverishly thinking about your next steps and how to get out of here alive without putting anyone in danger. Hunter frowns worriedly, watching you. He can tell something is wrong. Tech is talking to him, but he is focused on you right now. He leaves the table where he was sitting with his brothers and is about to come over to you when he hears a voice say clearly and distinctly, not shouting but loud enough, "CT 9901"
You feel hot and cold, a shiver runs down your spine, you're sure Hunter feels the same way, you can see it on his face. All the heads at the Bad Batch table look up in surprise, shock and alarm. Hunter turns to the voice that seems to be coming from one of the other tables a few meters away. A man suddenly stands up, slowly, unhurriedly, confidently. Like a predator who is sure of his prey, who has no reason to be afraid, no need to hurry. Neither you nor Hunter like the body language. What surprises you, however, is that this man, in his strange, dark uniform, is not looking for you as you expected, but obviously for Hunter and presumably his brothers. "All 99ers in one room, this must be my lucky day. And not only that, I feel like I'm getting a little something extra on top of that," the somber stranger says, his voice deep and clear, almost melodic.
The room falls silent, as if the presence of this man demands it. With a confident little smile, the man pulls a knife from his belt, the first movement is slow, almost sluggish, but the throw comes so suddenly that you barely have time to react. It has become so quiet in the bar that you could hear a pin drop. But when the blade suddenly seems to stop in mid-air barely a centimeter from Hunter's eye, a murmur goes through the room. You're sure you can hear someone whispering the word Jedi.
Hunter only lets out a quiet, "What the hell", he can't help but stare at the blade for a moment. He should be dead, he realizes, that vibro blade should have drilled into his skull, but there it is, hovering right in front of his face. Out of the corner of his eye he sees your outstretched hand, your concentrated gaze, and he begins to understand. You stopped the blade from killing him, you stopped it in its tracks. The stranger's cool voice draws you both back to him. "I knew I sensed a Jedi in the room, and I knew you couldn't resist to show yourself" In the next moment everything happens very quickly, there is no time to think, to process, to make plans. The man reaches out his hand, and you feel his grip on you in the force. You are swept over the bar counter, with a pull on your body, trough the force, knocking over two tables on your way to the floor. Everything around you happens in a haze, you hear Hunter cursing angrily, blaster shots, the distinctive buzz of an awakening lightsaber, screams from the other patrons. A red glow fills the room. The smell of burned flesh.
Your left side hurts. You landed hard on the tables when the Sith Force-wrenched you over the counter, maybe you cracked a few ribs. There are shards on the surrounding floor from the glasses that went down. As you try to pick yourself up, you accidentally reach in and cut your right palm. The pain is sharp, clear and distinct, bringing you back to reality from your surprise. You jump to your feet, skillfully, supported by the force that flows through and envelops you. It's been a long time since you've used the Force and your abilities in this way, but it's as if you've never let it out of your fingers, the lightsaber sliding into your hand, its blade glowing blue with its characteristic hum. Blood runs down the hilt of your weapon from the open cut on your hand, it burns, but you ignore the pain. You feel Hunter's gaze, he is still confused. He knows what you are now, but he certainly hasn't processed the news yet. At the moment, you all have other things to worry about. Did the Sith come alone? Are there Stormtroopers waiting for you outside the bar?
You concentrate on the force, on the intentions of your opponent. Everything you feel emanating from him is sharp, dark, glowing hot. He is driven by rage, and the moment your lightsabers cross, you feel all the hatred in his attacks, which are admittedly much stronger than you expected. You've never fought a real Sith before. The first touch of your lightsabers is like an electric shock, an incredibly hard impact, a wave of fury that seems to roll over you from your opponent. The hilt of your weapon is slippery with your own blood, you have to grab it hastily with both hands so that the sword doesn't slip from your grasp or your opponent will decapitate you. For a moment, Hunter's concern penetrates your perception, but you shut him out and have to concentrate. A quick exchange of blows follows, attack, parry, retreat, attack, parry... The handle of your weapon becomes increasingly slippery with your own blood. Then it happens, another hard blow, you parry, the impact of the blades causes your weapon to slip away.
You hear Hunter yell out, hear the shock in his voice, the terror in that simple word, "No!" His blaster lies on the ground, sliced in half by the Sith's blade. Hunter has pulled his knife from his belt in a split second, lunging in the Sith's direction. The blade of your attacker hovers just in front of your neck, you hold the Sith and his weapon in this position with all the strength you can muster with body and force. Your heart races, adrenaline flows through your body. There are only millimeters between your life and death. Millimeters before the red lightsaber could sever your head from your shoulders. Hunter reaches an arm around the Sith's neck and jabs his knife into his side. The sergeant's voice is dark and smoky as he rasps, "Not on my watch"
The red lightsaber goes out and falls to the ground. Hunter kicks it aside, away from the Sith's hands, and lets the mortally wounded attacker slide to the ground. You see Hunter's chest rise and fall, still electrified, while your adrenaline suddenly subsides and your hands begin to tremble a little. You concentrate on the force, your center, and banish the trembling from your limbs. With a sigh, you look at the man on the ground, who is taking his last breaths, his cold, sapphire eyes still looking up at you with hatred, but there is also reluctance in them, surprise, defiance. Echo kneels down next to him, feels his pulse. "Quite dead," he says dryly, and with a glance at your extinguished lightsaber, he asks, "Care to explain?" "Take it easy, Echo. I guess it's obvious why we're only finding out now, it would have been dangerous to reveal the truth," Hunter says calmly and steps closer, carefully grabbing your hand and looking at the cut.
"That needs stitching," Tech says with a sideways glance and adds, "I can do it when we get to the Marauder, we should get out of here, more will come" The others lead the way, Hunter and you follow at a slight distance. You can't quite believe it yet. CF99 accepts you into their midst, no ifs, no questions, yet. Admittedly, Echo is still a little skeptical, but he always is. But you're part of it now, you're no longer alone. The thought spikes a feeling of euphoria in you. "Looks like Clone Force 99 has its own Jedi now," Hunter says with a wry smile. You crack a smile, liking the idea, forgetting for a moment your bleeding hand and the drops of blood that fall to the ground and on your tunic. Crosshair, who is walking ahead of you, casts a jaunty glance over his shoulder and says dryly, "Just don't expect me to follow your orders, General." He says it with a wink, even if his words sound a little hostile, he is friendly to you, you sense his intentions in the Force.
You say quietly, "I wasn't going to give you orders, you have a working system as a group, I wouldn't dream of changing it" The Sniper laughs softly, "Clever Jedi" Hunter drops back a little, and you do the same, sensing that he has something to say to you. After a little while, on your way to the Marauder, he says seriously, "You gave up your cover to save my life, thank you" You chuckle and say softly, "The things we do for love" Hunter listens in surprise and asks, "So our dates aren't part of your cover?" You've opened up to him in the force, feeling his pulse, the tingling under his skin as if it were your own. "I would never play with your feelings, not even as a cover," you say seriously. Hunter breathes a sigh of relief and asks, "So nothing will change between us?" "I'd like us to continue our relationship and see where it takes us," you reply with a warm smile. You feel his relief, his affection, and you breathe a sigh of relief as well.
"That's what I want too," he says, carefully grabbing your hand and taking another look at the wound. "That looks really bad," he says, frowning. Wrecker comes rushing up and murmurs, "Now hurry up, or our Jedi will bleed to death!" Impatiently, he grabs you and lifts you off your feet to carry you to the Marauder. You make a small, startled noise. "Wrecker," Hunter says softly, admonishing. "What? The little Jedi got hurt!" Wrecker returns unperturbed and carries you to the Marauder. "It's just a cut on my hand," you say, waving it off. "It's bleeding a lot," Tech comments as Wrecker sets you down next to him and points at your stained tunic. Tech already has medical supplies ready, including a needle and thread, but first Echo cleans the wound. You grit your teeth, because the cleaning stings a lot. Echo says knowingly, "Don't worry, it'll be done in a minute"
Wrecker asks curiously, "Is the Jedi officially with us now?" Hunter sits down opposite you and watches as your wound is taken care of, he says, "I think so" "But I'm not really a Jedi anymore. There is no longer a Jedi order and I haven't been following the code for a while now, at least not to the letter," Hunter's eyes meet yours at the last words. Your heart beats faster as a smile twitches at the corner of his mouth. "We're not really regular clones either, we're not really soldiers anymore," Tech says lightly. Crosshair sticks a toothpick in his mouth and mutters, "Welcome to the defect squad, I have a feeling you'll fit in perfectly here"

a half-hearted escape
Hunter x F!Reader
word count: 3.4k
description: in the heat of the moment, you have a bad idea that would help you evade capture, but you never expected the accidental half-confession it draws from Hunter
warnings: kissing to escape capture trope, swearing, miscommunication kinda? steamy kissing but nothing crazy just some wandering hands, kinda cheesy perhaps
a/n: shamelessly inspired by that new girl season 2 episode (you'll see). this is just a short and sweet one :) because the Fives one I'm writing rn is taking the life out of me lmao. tbh I can't believe this is only my second Hunter fic, I am a Hunter girlie after all. the title makes sense in my heart okay

You were running, except there was nowhere else to run to anymore. It was a dead end.
âFuckâ Hunter breathed the word out heavily as he rested his back against the wall in the thin alley, looking this way and that, âWhat do we do?â
âYou give the orders around here, you tell meâ you replied in an exasperated huff, earning an unimpressed look.
âWell I'm taking suggestionsâ he growled, his voice low and irritated as he peered around the corner.
You glanced around the alley. There was really nothing to hide you, only some rubbish scattered about the ground, but leaving would guarantee your capture at this point. A thought entered your head and you let out a short whine at having even let it find it's way in.
âWhat? You have something?â Hunter asked, turning to find the reason for your sudden vocalisation.
âI have a really bad ideaâ you said, giving him an almost pained look.
âWell anything is better than nothingâ he argued, which only made you laugh humourlessly.
âYou're going to take that back in a minuteâ you told him, and he turned to you fully so you could see his frown.
âWhat are youâ?â
âNo timeâ you said in a panic, noting the patrol of stormtroopers about to pass by, âpick me upâ
âWhat?â he hissed, his expression contorting into one of utter confusion.
âJust do it, quicklyâ you rolled your eyes and stepped up to him, hoping he'd follow your instruction. He hesitated for a moment, but hooked his hands under your thighs and you jumped into his hold.
âRight, now push me against the wallâ you instructed.
âYou've got to be kidââ
âHunterâ you snapped at him, âthey're comingâ
He groaned out of frustration, but obliged, stepping forwards and trapping your body between his and the wall.
âYou happy now?â Hunter asked with a scowl, his breath hot as it fanned across your face.
âEcstaticâ you bit back, looking over his shoulder at the incoming stormtroopers. They were looking into every side street that they passed, their blasters held up as they inspected.
You reached up and slipped off Hunter's bandana, ruffling his hair so that it hung over his face. He let out a short grunt and fluttered his eyes closed as you did so.
âWas that really necessary?â he grumbled.
âShut upâ you replied, then wrapped your arms around his neck, hiding your own face as well.
You could hear the chatter of the stormtroopers as they passed by. They seemed not to want to disturb you, and you breathed out a relieved sigh. You continued to listen out for them, but it was hard not to become distracted by the intensity of Hunter's gaze as he opened his eyes and stared directly into yours from only a few inches away.
It struck you that you felt surprisingly comfortable in his arms, as if it were entirely normal to be in this situation.
âI can't believe thisâ he mumbled out, with a small shake of his head and a little humour in his voice.
âI did say it was a really bad ideaâ you reminded him, one side if your mouth curling into a small smirk.
Hunter scoffed, âI'm never trusting any of your ideas ever againâ
You chuckled breathily, your head dropping forwards so that your forehead gently rested against his. He adjusted his hold on you, his hands gripping the top of your thighs, and you wrapped your legs around his waist to ease the load.
âYouââ
âIf you say I'm heavy, I swear to the maker I will punch youâ you interjected. It wasn't uncommon that Hunter would taunt you, so you were only trying to pre-empt his teasing.
Hunter chuckled, a deep rumble that you could feel with him pressed up against you. âI was actually going to say that you smell goodâ he corrected in a murmur.
Oh. That certainly wasn't what you were expecting.
âUh, thanks. I guessâ you spoke awkwardly, your eyes flicking away from his.
Despite your uneasy reaction, you actually felt a sense of pride in the comment. Hunter had attuned senses, you knew that, so for him to say such a thing felt more meaningful to you than if anyone else had said the same thing. A strange feeling tugged at you chest and you could feel your face flush at the observation that felt oddly personal.
âDo you think they've passed us?â Hunter asked, and it brought you back to why you were in this situation to begin with.
âRight, uhâŚâ you lifted your head and peered outside of the alley, not seeing any stormtroopers passing by, âSeems like itâ
Hunter was about to let you down when you saw a flash of white plastoid come into view.
âWaitâ you gripped him tighter, âfuck, they're coming this wayâ
Hunter huffed, âWell what do we do now?â
Your mind scrambled for something, anything to let you escape capture, and you were surprised by how quickly it brought forth your next bad idea.
âKiss meâ
âWhâ?â
âJust do it. It'll make them uncomfortableâ
âYeah, they won't be the only onesâ
You rolled your eyes, âHunter please, just get on with itâ
âNoâ
âNo?â
âNo. I'm not doing itâ
You cast a glance over his shoulder again and the stormtroopers were practically entering the alley.
âHunter they're right on top of us, they'll know we're pretendingâ
âNo they won'tâ He replied firmly, pressing his forehead into yours to hide your faces.
âHunter just do it, you don't have to make it convincing evenâ
Hunter chuckled harshly at that, âThat's not the problem. I'm just not doing itâ
âHunter, just kissââ
âNo. Not like thisâ
That gave you pause. The situation at hand completely slipped your mind.
âWhat?â your voice was small, nowhere near the amount of power it usually had behind it.
It was obvious that Hunter had said something he shouldn't have. His eyes were wide and his mouth hanging open, stuttering, looking for the words to explain himself. He tilted his head to look towards the end of the alley and there were stormtroopers looking in at the two of you. He turned back to you and the look of shock was still present on your face, trying to process what his earlier words truly meant.
âOh, fuck itâ
He latched his lips with yours, gripping the flesh of your thighs even tighter. He kissed you with fervour, and you couldn't tell how much of it was to make the stormtroopers leave you be. He pressed you into the wall further as his mouth worked against yours, lips moulding together in a way that could be interpreted as passionate, if you could sort out in your mind what was real and what wasn't. If he was doing this just to put on a show, you wanted to know what heâd do behind closed doors.
Wait, what?
Since when did you think such things about Hunter?
Any rationality in your thoughts left you when his hand slid up your body and he tugged you even closer, gripping your hip tightly. The other hand wound its way up to your neck, and he traced his thumb across your jawline, drawing a shudder from you.
By now, you were past caring if the kiss was just for show, you were enjoying it too much to pretend anymore. You tugged at the hair at the base of Hunter's scalp, pulling a deep groan from him that allowed you to deepen the kiss, slipping your tongue between his lips. The experience of exploring each other's mouths was intoxicating, the heady feeling somewhat close to that of being under the influence of spice. You couldn't get enough.
By the time you both pulled away, you had to take a moment to come back to your body, your breath falling from you in short pants. You blinked a few times, the haze lifting slowly, and found his grey eyes searching yours, his own breath just as heavy. You were passing air between you, still close enough that you could tilt your head and kiss him again. You almost did, before you remembered exactly why he had even kissed you to begin with.
You tilted your head to the side, resting it against Hunter's as you surveyed the situation.
âI thinkââ your breath was still heavy, and you had to pause to gather enough to speak, âI think they're goneâ
The look on Hunter's face when you turned back to him was positively hurt, his brows drawn together as his lips turned downwards. You wished you could take back your words instantly, though you didn't know exactly what was going on. You'd need more time to figure that out.
Hunter dropped you to the floor, somewhat unceremoniously, and you braced yourself on the wall to stop from falling over. He went to the edge of the alley, glancing around the street that you had escaped from.
âYou're rightâ he coughed out, âthey're goneâ
The tone of his voice tugged harshly at your heart. He was clearly trying to keep himself together for the sake of the mission, but it was undeniable by the quiver in his voice that he wasn't feeling completely sure of himself.
âHunterâ you called in a soft voice.
âWhatâ he snapped back, his eyes finding yours.
You didn't know why he was suddenly acting like this, though you didn't know how else he was supposed to act after what just transpired. You didn't know how to act yourself.
âNothingâ You replied, shame burning at your cheeks as you looked down, âlead the wayâ
The journey back to the Marauder was excruciating. Neither of you spoke up, no matter how hard you tried to whip something up in your brain. There was nothing you could find to say that would fix the rift that had so clearly been created between you.
Even after you both climbed the steps of the ship, greetings being thrown at you by the other squad members, Hunter wouldn't look at you.
âEverything went smoothly I take it?â Tech asked, noting how both of you seemed to be unharmed.
The picture in front of Echo was entirely different to what Tech was seeing, apparently. He raised a brow at you when Hunter didn't reply, storming into the cockpit.
âMhm, more or lessâ you answered the spectacled clone, then ducked away from Echo's watchful gaze, striding towards the bunks at the back of the ship.
You sat down on your bunk, running your hands through your hair, and that's when you realised you were still gripping tightly onto Hunterâs bandana.
âKriffâ you swore under your breath, standing once more and crossing the short distance to the bunk that belonged to owner of the scrap of fabric. You weren't going to give it back to him yourself, definitely not now.
You placed the red material down onto his pillow, taking a moment to run your thumb across the skull insignia before pulling away.
âWhy do you have that?â
You jumped at the voice just behind you, and scowled before you turned around, knowing exactly how this conversation was going to go. Echo was impossible to lie to. He just somehow knew when you were lying, and you hated it.
âHunter dropped itâ you lied poorly, turning your face from the scrutinising honey eyes of your squadmate.
âHe⌠dropped it?â Echo spoke suspiciously, clearly not believing a single word.
âYepâ you replied, dropping down onto your bunk again.
âSo it just⌠fell off his head?â he asked.
You looked up to see his disbelieving look, a scoff naturally passing your lips.
âI'm not in the mood for this right nowâ you grumbled, which only made Echo's lips curve into a smirk, âand wipe that look off of your faceâ
âWhat look?â Echo questioned, his smirk only widening.
You rolled your eyes and laid down on your bunk, turning away from the infuriating clone. You heard him chuckle before the scuff of his boots against the floor signified his leaving, and you let out a long breath.
Your thoughts all muddled together with uncertainty. You hoped to bridge the gap between you and Hunter, but what if you couldn't? What if your stupid idea had done something irreparable?
The next few days were tense.
Everyone knew something had occurred between you and the Sergeant, but neither one of you would speak about it to the others, much less to each other.
It was agony. You found yourself sitting at the bar in Cid's parlour, watching him sulk across the room. You wanted to reach out, extend the olive branch, but you had no idea what to even say.
Sorry for holding you against your will and making you kiss me? Or I'm sorry I made you believe I actually had feelings for you?
You didn't know which was the correct sentiment, and you had been driving yourself mad trying to decipher his slip up from before you kissed. The words bounced around your brain, taunting you. Not like this. What did it mean?
Even more distressingly, it wasn't even the case that you had pretended to have feeling for him, not anymore at least.
You had always found Hunter attractive, how could you not after all, but this was uncharted territory. You never expected to actually feel anything for him in this sort of way. A sense of closeness, yes. A deep respect, definitely. But this â this ache in your chest as you looked upon his displeased expression â was something entirely new. It made you feel sick.
âHey hot shot! Bandana! Get in hereâ the grating call came from Cidâs office, and you ground your teeth at the irritating nickname.
You slipped from your seat at the bar, glancing over in Hunter's direction. He stayed seated, twirling his vibroblade between his fingers and watching you walk across the room. Your gaze fell to his fingers flipping the knife about, and you had to pull your eyes away when your mind brought forth how enticing you found it.
âWhat is it?â you spoke harshly as you entered the office, little patience for the Trandoshan sat behind the desk.
âThat's no way to talk to your employerâ Cid chided as she stood from her seat, making her way around the desk to stand in front of you. You had to look down to meet her eyes, and it gave you a small bit of satisfaction. At least you could say you looked down on her, even if she was a pain in your ass.
âWhat is this about?â a gruff voice spoke up, and you eyes followed Hunter as he walked into the room and stood beside you at the desk.
Cid rolled her eyes, âYou two are a right pairâ she muttered as she walked towards the door, âI don't know what your problem is, but you two need to figure it out, because your foul attitudes are bringing down the mood around hereâ
You glanced up at Hunter, noting his grinding jaw and narrowed eyes.
âI'd rather nââ
âIt wasn't a request, bandanaâ Cid held her hand up to stop him and stepped out of her office, âNow, please, get over yourselves and figure this out. Just don't do anything on my desk and you'll still be employed after this is overâ
âAfter whaâ?â
You question was answered when Cid pressed a button on the control panel and closed the door. You heard the lock engage, and cringed at the implication. You were locked in here with Hunter. The one person you were both avoiding and actively seeking attention from.
Hunter grumbled and strode over to the door, repeatedly prodding at the open button on the panel, with nothing to show for it.
You sighed, âThere's no pointâ
Hunter turned to look at you, leaning his back against the door and crossing his arms across his chest. He looked at you down his nose, as if in disgust, and you couldn't help but feel small.
âWe should probably talk⌠right?â you offered, and he grunted in reply.
âI'm listeningâ
You had been banking on him having something to say, but that was foolish of you. Of course he wasn't going to make it easy. Unfortunately, you didn't have anything to say either, so you just stood watching each other for a moment.
âUm, Iââ you gulped, âI'm sorry?â
Hunter laughed, an unamused sound that made your stomach turn.
âWhat exactly are you sorry for?â he raised his eyebrows at you expectantly.
âWell I, uhâŚâ your shoulders sagged, your posture defeated, âI don't knowâ
âHmâ he tilted his head a little as he looked down at you, âthen I suppose your apology isn't acceptedâ
You huffed, giving him a frown, âcome on man, give me something to work with hereâ
âWhat's that supposed to mean?â he asked, his face adorning it's own frown.
âWhat does ânot like thisâ mean?â you rebutted, your tone holding an exasperation.
Hunter pressed his mouth into a hard line as he looked away from you, âthat's none of your businessâ
âI think its exactly my business actually,â you moved forwards, stepping into his space, âand I want to knowâ
He gave you a dubious look, his voice low, âwhy?â
âBecause,â you rolled your eyes, âbelieve it or not, it matters what you think of meâ
Hunter went to speak, then paused, a deep breath escaping him, âI think you know what it meansâ
You pressed your lips together, irritated that he couldn't just come out and say it, âThen⌠why won't you talk to me?â
âBecause there's nothing to sayâ he looked away, and you could see his cheeks tinge pink, âcan we just forget that it happened and move on?â
His obvious embarrassment almost made you laugh.
âAnd what if I don't want to?â
That got his attention.
âWhat?â he asked, his voice careful, measured, making sure he understood you.
âI don't want to forget that it happenedâ you reiterated.
âWhy?â
You shook your head slightly. When was this man going to get the memo. A smile pulled at your lips and you stepped right in front of him.
âBecause, HunterâŚâ your smile turned to a smirk, âmaybe I want it to happen againâ
Hunter's eyebrows raised as he looked down at you, and he pushed off of the door, uncrossing his arms and finally taking down his physical and mental barriers.
âYou do?â
âMhmâ you replied in a lilting hum.
He didn't need to be told twice.
Hunter grabbed you by the hips, pulling your body flush against his, and his lips found yours shortly thereafter. He kissed you with a passion to rival that of the first one, but this time you knew it was real, that he really meant it. You couldnât help but smile into the kiss, his change in attitude since your confession amusing you.
âSomething funny?â he mumbled against you, not giving you a chance to answer before his lips were on yours again, pushing you backwards so your body hit the desk.
âJust youâ you replied, a chuckle bubbling up and out of you as he huffed.
His lips trailed kisses along your jaw as he leaned down, his hands hooking underneath your thighs and lifting you easily to sit atop the desk. A small squeak left your lips at the unexpected action, and you could feel Hunter smirk against your neck as he parted your legs further and came to stand in between them. His nose brushed against a sensitive spot just behind your ear, and a shiver ran up your spine, a small gasp escaping your lips.
âFuck, you smell so goodâ he mumbled between kisses to your collarbone, and the breathless tone and sentiment sent an unexpected thrill through you. You gently scraped your fingernails down the back of his neck, earning a groan in return, and he brought his lips back up to yours in a hurry.
You couldnât get enough, and you wouldâve taken more, had you not been so rudely interrupted.
âI said not to do anything on my desk!â

As Iron Sharpens Iron
"As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another." Proverbs 27:17
Beta-read by @dragonrider9905
Chapter 1:
Previous // Next
Warnings: Jealousy. Brief mention of blood. Canon violence.
--------------------------------------------------
You couldn't even look at her.
That thought alone made you sick to your stomach. The fact that you couldn't bear to look at a woman simply because she was interested in the same man that you were, made you want to cry.
Am I really that shallow? You thought bitterly as you slammed the hydrospanner into the damaged component of the landing gear youâd been trying to dislodge.
I canât believe I was so stupid! You jammed the point of the tool violently into a crack, trying to pry it out. Of course heâd go for her. She was prettier than you - funnier too.
You closed your eyes, taking a deep breath.
Hunter is his own man. He likes someone else. Not a big deal.
Except for some reason, judging by the heavy ache in your chest, it was a big deal, no matter how much you tried to fool yourself into thinking that everything was fine.
The landing gear piece was still stuck fast. You set down the hydrospanner and picked up the plasma cutter.
This better kriffing work or Iâll have Tech up my ass for a month about it. Not to mention having to tell Hunter that I broke the ship. Again.
You ran your fingers over the healing scar on your cheek and looked at the carbon scoring around the piece that stuck fast, fused in place by laser fire.
A smile made its way across your face as you remembered how it all happened. You were providing cover fire so they'd have time to escape - more exposed than you'd like to be, but it wasn't anything you couldn't handle - until a stray shot hit the ship at just the right angle.
Hunter had tackled you to the ground, shielding you from the blast with his own body.
Despite the chaos around you, being in his arms felt safe.
âDonât ever do that again!â It was meant to be an order but it felt different than any of the others heâd given over the past year. The way heâd taken your face into his hands, carefully examining the small, insignificant wound on your cheek. His face was unreadable but as youâd looked closer, his eyes were a whirlwind of relief that you hadnât been hurt worse. There was something else there too - something that fed the hope hidden away in your core that your feelings toward him were reciprocated. Heâd kept his hand on your arm as you stood up. They were strong, steady hands that kept you warm and stayed on your arm seconds longer than the moment demanded.
But then youâd found him in a closet with Pheeâs sister only hours later at Cidâs parlour.
Iâm so stupid. How could I have read him so wrong? What made me think Iâd ever have a chance with a man like Hunter? You shook your head, angry at yourself for letting your guard down. For the first time since the beginning of the Clone Wars, youâd felt alive in a way that didnât involve throwing yourself into violently dangerous situations. You felt at home with this band of misfit clones. You had finally allowed yourself to feel and acknowledge the emotions that came with it. Now you remembered why you hadnât done that before. It was stupid and you would make sure that it wouldnât happen again.
Finishing with the plasma cutter, you brought a wrench down hard with a loud clang. The piece barely moved an inch and you threw the tool down with a frustrated groan.
âYou okay over there?â Phee poked her head around the corner, eyebrow raised.
âIâm good!â You grinned, hoping the faux smile would keep her from asking anymore questions. âJust trying to get this stubborn kriffing piece out so Tech can replace it when he gets back.â
Phee chuckled as you glared at the offending part. She walked over to the side of the ship, looking up and down at the stripped landing gear.
âDamn⌠whatâd you guys get into this time?â
It was your turn to chuckle, grateful for the distraction from your spiraling negativity.
âThat is a very complicated story,â Tech answered for you as he rounded the corner, âHowever, I do not currently have the time to tell it. We have another mission from Cid and should be leaving as soon as weâve made our repairs.â
Good, you thought. Another mission might be just what you needed to get out of your head and back into the groove of things. Back to normal.
Tech stopped next to Phee in front of the landing gear, surveying the mess of tools and ship components. He frowned. âAlthough, it seems as though that may take a bit longer than I originally thought.â
He grabbed the hydrospanner from the ground by your feet and began prying at the piece youâd been working on. âI will fix this. You pick up the tools and get that carbon scoring off of those panels.â
Phee grinned as she began helping you scrape. âI love it when you get all bossy like that, Brown-Eyes.â
Techâs cheeks darkened, the only indicator that heâd heard her at all.
You smirked. Tech and Phee were so different from each other. Her carefree sense of adventure and aptitude for playing fast and loose with the rules seemed opposite to Techâs academic personality and rigid structure. But despite their differences, they seemed to bond over an innate sense of curiosity and wonder. They belonged together.
Like Hunter and I should be, you thought bitterly.
The silence that fell on the group as you worked was deafening. Every so often you caught Phee pausing to watch as Tech worked his magic with the repairs.
Tech remained oblivious, but found himself sending subtle glances towards her as she worked. Every glance felt like daggers through your chest. A reminder of what could have been yours.
âHowâs it looking, Tech?â Hunter walked around the corner, setting a crate of explosives down for Wrecker to load onto the ship.
The knife youâd been using to scrape the panel suddenly felt heavy and clumsy in your hand. It slipped through your fingers as you frantically tried to catch it but failed as it hit the ground with a dull thud.
You gasped as a thin line of blood blossomed across your pointer finger and the palm of your hand.
âKriff!â you grumbled under your breath. Hunter stepped forward quickly only to be intercepted by Phee who grabbed your injured hand, inspecting it.
âEh, youâre fine,â she pulled a bacta patch from her pocket, quickly wrapping the injury as though sheâd done it more than her fair share of times. âBe more careful with that next time,â she chided. You looked up expecting to see Hunter but he was gone.

Author's note: This is a crazy ride jam-packed with fav tropes of mine, so I can only apologise for the emotional whiplash, but blame my dream because that is where this entire concept came from! Hope it was worth the wait!

The day of the party everyone had been eager awaiting had finally arrived. It was being done in your and the rest of the Batchâs honour and was serving as a combined official welcome to Pabu/congratulations on making it through everything alive type of thing but regardless of the slightly elaborate purpose, the island was all a buzz with excitement and preparations.
You and Hunter were meandering away from the busy colonnade. Your offer to help with the last of the party set up had been politely declined so instead the two of you had opted to join the others at the beach.
âHey!â
You turned in surprise at the familiar voice and you saw the woman running off her ship and towards you. âOh hey! What-â Your question was cut off with a huff of air as you were brought into a tight hug.
âLet me see-â Lyra stepped back from you and grabbed your hands excitedly but stopped short as she held them.
âSee what?â You looked at her, utterly perplexed by her behaviour.
Hunter resisted the urge to clamp his hand over Lyraâs mouth but thereâd be no believable way to explain that away, so he just had to stand there and cross his fingers that you didnât pressure Lyra for further elaboration.
Lyra realised her mistake and backtracked quickly. âYou. Let me see you. Itâs been far too long.â She dropped your hands and just walked around you, analysing your form. âYup, I still got it. Both of you are looking pretty sharp in my stuff if I do say so myself. So, I bet the rest of your lot do to.â
âStop that.â You twisted your head around and waved her away with a fond yet bemused grin. âWhy are you acting so weird? Better yet why are you here? Not that Iâm not happy to see you.â You added hastily but you were a second too late. Â
Lyra placed her hand over her heart in faux offence. âWow, months with no word and then only sporadic comm channel conversations and this is how Iâm greeted? I told you I would visit. Speaking of, I brought more samples of my work.â She gestured to the two cases by her feet. âTop one is yours, the second is to be divided between the rest of your crew. But to answer your question, Iâm here for the party.â
You titled your head at her. Your last call had been before the party had been decided so you didnât know how she knew about it. âThe party? Who invited you?â You asked quizzically.
Lyra shot a nervous glance to the man at your side. Sheâd already almost blown it; she didnât want to risk doing it again. âUh, Hunter did actually.â
You glanced at Hunter curiously. âYou did?â
Hunter maintained a sense of calm as he answered, âWell, technically it was through Echo, but I put them in contact. Also, a lot of people were asking about our clothes. Figured it couldnât hurt to see if Shep needed someone like her here. Today felt like the perfect time.â That part was a genuine truth. He hadnât thought much of the situation on Christophsis in the short time heâd been there- well, what he had thought wasnât in any way positive-, and youâd always expressed interest in figuring out a way to get Lyra out of there and somewhere better. He was killing two birds with one stone here. Â
âYeah, a party and a job opportunity away from Imperial bullshit was too good to pass up.â Lyra confirmed with a grin.
You smiled broadly. âOh okay! Thatâd be pretty great actually! So, Christophsis hasnât improved since I left?â
âJust kept getting worse.â Lyra said plainly. âGot decent enough business to buy that condemned ship but itâs still pretty awful there. I definitely would not miss it.â
You shot her a sympathetic look before you clapped your hands together, âWell, I better go get Shep and officially introduce you two!â You wandered away to go find the man that was busying about the area making sure things were on schedule for tonight.
Hunter waited until you were out of earshot. He placed his hands on his hips and stared at Lyra. âThat was subtle.â He deadpanned.
Lyra cringed. âIâm sorry! The transmission from Echo was pretty dodgy. I couldnât quite hear him. I just heard âHunter, party, Pabuâ so I though this party was to celebrate what had happened, not as a lead up to whatâs going to happen.â
Hunter heaved a weary, stressed sigh. This was beginning to become the best yet somehow worst kept secret on Pabu. He was just grateful that the one person who he really didnât want to know still appeared to have no idea. How that was possible, he really didnât understand since it seemed to have spread from the need-to-know people to what felt like every citizen of the island, but he didnât want to question it too much in case he jinxed it. Each time he passed someone by, and they shot him that knowing smile, he felt a flare of panic that you would notice and start to question him but so far, you just took it as standard practice from the naturally friendly disposition of the people here. He was almost there, he just needed everyone around him to keep it together. He straightened up and signalled to Lyra to act natural as you approached them once more.
âLyra, this is Shep. The best mayor of Pabu and overall, pretty incredible man. Shep, this is my friend Lyra.â
âNice to meet you.â Lyra stuck her hand out with a friendly grin and nodded to you. âSheâs always spoken highly of you.â
âWeâve all grown very fond of her and the rest of the family.â Shep smiled and shook her hand in return. âItâs nice to officially meet you too! Youâre joining us for our little shindig? And Hunter also tells me youâre looking to live and employ yourself here?â
âYup! Canât keep me from a good party. And yes, if you have the space for me, Iâd love to talk to you about it more!â Lyra said cheerily. âAnything I can do to help with setting up in the meantime?â
âIâm sure thereâs something. It always gets chaotic in the final stages.â Shep said, sweeping his arm in front of him to guide her in the direction he was going.
âHang on, you said-â You started to argue.
âGo enjoy your day, weâll see you later tonight!â Shep said dismissively.
âYour cases!â Hunter called after the fading figures.
âTheyâre yours!â Lyra tossed over her shoulder. âAlthough, Iâd wait until youâre alone to open yours!â She said to you specifically.
You let out a small groan. Your mind immediately entered panic mode and started jumping between every experimental or bold combination of clothing that she felt the need to put you in. Sheâd been on point so far, but you knew there had to be a catch at some point.
âWe can take a slight detour before heading to the beach, right? Itâs only a couple minutes out the way.â Hunter double checked with you.
âYeah def-â You didnât even get a chance to finish your sentence or pick up a box before someone swept in and addressed Hunter.
âDonât worry, Hunter. Iâm heading past your house anyway to grab some supplies we need up here. I can drop them off. You guys can carry on with your day.â
âThanks Kyan.â Hunter said as the fisherman picked up the boxes.
âYes, thank you so much!â You echoed as he left. âWhy is everyone being so nice?â You mused as you saw him head in the direction of your home. âWeâre basically passing our house anyway; we couldâve done it.â
âTheyâre always nice here.â Hunter said nonchalantly, hoping you wouldnât sense his nerves increasing. He snaked an arm around your waist and guided you down the winding path.
âI guess.â You mirrored his gesture as you strolled towards the beach. âThis just feels different, like they all know something we donât.â
âI wouldnât think too much about it.â Hunter advised. Two more hours. Only two more hours to go before the secret would finally be out in the open.
--
You and Hunter stood on an outcrop of rocks just overlooking the sea and you called over to the group of people and dog sitting on the beach. âHow was the swim?â
âAmazing! You really should go for one too. The water is so nice!â Omega encouraged as she lounged on a towel, letting the warm sun dry her off. Her and Batcher had been the only one to actually enter the water, the others had only decided to get their feet wet.
âIâm good. We donât have long before the party and Iâd rather-â You sensed the threat a second to late. With a yelp, you were shoved over the edge and entered the water with a splash.
You came to the surface to the sounds of laughter from the bystanders on the beach- even the dog was barking in a way that sounded like a laugh. You glared up at the clone staring down at you with a smug grin on his face. âYou mother-â
âSo⌠howâs the water?â Hunter taunted.
Two could play this game. âYeah, itâs great actually, youâre really missing out.â With that, you raised your hand and with a tug of the Force, Hunter swiftly tumbled into the water too.
His aggrieved shout before he hit the water was music to your ears.
âOkay, I shouldâve seen that coming.â Hunter admitted through a short series of coughs as he reappeared from below the depths.
Your plan of revenge had instantly backfired given just how perfect he looked right now. Your breath hitched as you saw the way his wet hair fell around his shoulders and framed his profile as well as the way droplets of water dripped down his face. He was a sight to behold. You reached up and stroked some of his damp fringe just behind his bandana. Youâre beautiful.
Hunter gulped at the compliment. It had never been a word heâd apply to himself; he didnât really view himself in that light, it was only ever you. Yet you said it to him with such sincere feeling, he knew you meant it.
You kissed him softly before you made to swim for shore, but you didnât get very far.
In one short stroke, Hunter reached you and kissed you fiercely.
You tangled your fingers in his damp locks with a pleasure filled sigh as you matched his strokes.
Hunter could taste the salt on your lips, and he could feel the way your body pressed against him as you grew more eager, it only spurred him on further.
The few disgruntled and offended shouts as well as a ship flying overhead caused you both to hastily pull apart.
âItâs Echo!â Omega yelled happily, wriggling out of the protective hand Wrecker had placed over her eyes- it wasnât like she had no idea what was going on. Not waiting on the rest of them, she and Batcher dashed back towards where his ship was going to land.
âUm, so-â Hunter began awkwardly. He used to be more careful about the public displays of affection, especially around his family, but it would appear that feeling free, relaxed and in love could be quite a distraction when it wanted to be.
Should everything go to plan, they were taking her anyway, but the confirmation felt necessary. âYes, weâll take her tonight.â Crosshair said, shaking his head in the direction of the two of you but a smile was on his face.
âHa! The gangâs all back!â Wrecker cheered, slapping Techâs shoulder as he, Tech and Crosshair followed the young girl. âI canât wait for this thing to get started!â
âYes, this party should be quite the reunion.â Tech remarked simply as he walked and finished making the finishing touches to the repairs to his goggles.
âEchoâs taking a break from the clone rebellion for a party?â You furrowed your brow as you reached the sand and half-heartedly wrung out the edges of your top.
Hunter shrugged as he wiped some water off his face. The fact that his brother was indeed making an appearance meant a lot, but he couldnât very well act like that in front of you. âItâs supposed to be quite the party.â
You huffed out a laugh. âRight.â
âPlus, he was right there with us, so it be a shame if he didnât make an appearance.â
You inclined your head in acceptance of that. You then took proper notice of the way his soaked clothes clung to his toned body, emphasising very muscle. Despite the chill of the water, your blood ran hot as intense longing overcame you. You turned away from him and attempted to regain control of yourself.
Hunter noticed the way you swiftly stopped looking at him and he knew you were fighting to regain control the same way he was but, quite frankly, he didnât want to. He came up behind you and draped his arms around your front.
You exhaled happily and leaned back against him.
âHow about a shower?â He crooned in your ear as he brushed his lips just behind your ear.
You nodded dumbly as he gently nipped at your earlobe. Control was overrated.
--
You let out a squeal as the door you were pressed up against opened suddenly and you stumbled backwards- if it werenât for the strong hands gripping your hips, you wouldâve fallen straight down. Your kisses with Hunter were a passionate and frenzied mess of tongue and teeth as he backed you down the hallway, muscle memory guiding the way since neither of you wanted to pull apart, not even to catch your breath.
A trail of wet clothes marked the way through to the refresher.
A gasp left your mouth as the first cold spray of water hit you, a gasp that Hunter took full advantage off as he kissed you deeply, swallowing your groans of pleasure.
The water soon turned warm, but goosebumps still graced your skin as you were pushed up against the cool wall tiles. You leaned your head back as Hunter removed his lips from yours and began biting and kissing along your neck. âW-wait.â You managed to say breathlessly. He had always been the one to cater to your needs and you wanted nothing more than to be the one to do that for him first. He so rarely put himself first both in everyday life and in this particular regard and it was something you wanted to change.
Hunter immediately stopped and braced his hands on either side of your head, his breathing heavy as he waited until you were comfortable to carry on. Or not.
You nearly lost it at the sight of the man in front of you. Beautiful had been an understatement. He looked positively ethereal as his hair was wet and loose around his shoulders, the pieces of fringe at the front just demanding your touch. Water cascaded down his toned back and his usual caring brown eyes were nearly black with lust yet there was a slight crinkle in his brow to indicate that he was happy to wait until he knew you were okay with proceeding which only added to your desire. You inhaled deeply and pressed a seductive kiss to his mouth before you trailed your lips down his neck, kissing the hollow of his throat. You then gently pushed him away from you in order to change positions, so that he was the one against the tiles now.
Hunter looked at you questioningly but any words he was about to speak became a hoarse groan as he felt you reach down and wrap your hand around him. He tipped his head back against the tiles as you moved your hand.
You ignored the feeling of the water on your back and fixed your focus entirely on him as you kept your touches teasing, relishing each groan that left his throat. Look at me.
Hunter was all too willing to follow your instructions, but he saw you getting ready to kneel and he caught your elbow. He swallowed harshly as he rasped through the haze of pleasure you were granting him, âY-you donât have to. L- let me-â
You shook your head to silence his protests and paused what you were currently doing. You pressed soft, doting kisses up his thighs, before making your way up his ribs and affectionately kissing the jagged scar left by the wild reeks all those years ago and then you carried on downwards once more as you formed a path of kisses to his abdomen before you moved lower still.
âYouâre always the one to give. I want you to take.â You encouraged as you licked a slow, sensual stripe along the length of him.
Hunterâs head fell back against the shower wall and a choked moan left his throat.
You stopped and tutted. You rose to your full height and grabbed the back of his neck, so he was forced to look at you once more. You needed him to watch so he knew just how much you wanted to do this for him. Keep your eyes on me. Do you think you can manage that?
Hunter just about managed to nod. He was utterly enraptured by the sight of you. Your eyes were bright and laced with longing, your heavy breaths came from lips already swollen from the kisses youâd shared and there was an overall desire that radiated from you that he was completely captivated by. Â
You smirked and kissed him deeply. Good boy.
âFuck.â Hunter breathed as he watched you go to your knees once more but even as you nodded up at him, he still found himself not wanting to take full advantage of the situation. He sought purchase against the shower walls as he fought with the primal urge within him to do what you were asking of him.
This particular scenario that you were invoking was new territory for him- you knew he would still be hesitant- so you began with that you knew would make him lose his mind and remove all doubt from his brain. You needed him to stop overthinking it and to stop being concerned with your pleasure needs for the moment.
You needed him only thinking about himself and the pleasure he wanted from you.
With his eyes still looking at you, Hunterâs hands slipped against the slick tiles as he fought against the impulse to tangle his fingers in your wet hair as each frustratingly slow and light touch had him losing his mind. Your name left his mouth in a cracked whisper as he pleaded, âP-please.â
Please what? You replied innocently. You looked up at him as you carried on, keeping your pace slow and your ministrations featherlight.
The alluring glint in your eyes had him swallowing hard as he searched for his voice. âI need- fuck- I need moreâŚâ He made a move to drop one of his hands but stopped. âSweetheart, I-â Â
You only need to take. You reminded as you placed light kisses along him.
At your words and as the instinctual need for release finally took over, Hunter found himself fisting your hair and guiding your mouth down the length of him.
You groaned appreciatively at the action.
Hunter released a choked gasp as the vibrations from your throat only added to the sensation that he was getting utterly lost in. And he was continuing to follow your instructions and he could understand why youâd laid them out. Watching your eyes flutter shut in pleasure as you accepted him made him close to finishing right then and there and he had gain control quickly or this would be over too soon.
You were compliant to his every move, making sure every response you gave him was what he wanted. His own moans and the broken praise emitting from his lips for you as he grew more and more caught up in finding gratification drove you on as he claimed your throat in the way you had been waiting for him to do.
His gruff sighs made your own simmering arousal burn red hot in your veins.
This was exactly what you wanted.
You wanted him incoherent.
You wanted him to let go.
You wanted him to focus on himself.
The release Hunter was chasing arrived faster than heâd anticipated but he couldnât bring himself to pull away from you. you felt too good. The best he could do was attempt a hoarse, stammered warning, âIâm gonna- oh fuck-â He kept looking at you and a new longing took a hold of him, the one he had before this began. âI want to taste yâ I need to tou- fuck youâre doing so well-â But he still couldnât stop despite him meaning the words he was blabbering. âIâm- wait-â
You already knew he was nearing his climax by the way his hips stuttered but you didnât want him to hold back. You clasped his free hand in encouragement and kept yourself right where you were. Itâs okay, I want it.
That was all he needed. With a loud and hoarse shout, Hunter reached that sweet moment of ecstasy.
You stayed strong, only stopping when he demandingly pulled you to your feet and before you could even process what had happened, your back was to the shower wall once more, Hunterâs body pressed tight up against yours as his lips crashed into yours.
Hunter could taste the remnants of his release on your tongue, and it prompted him to hold the hinge of your jaw to tip your head back as he licked into your mouth. A deep growl sounding from him as he did so.
You welcomed his kiss and matched his intensity as you pawed at his muscled back as if you could somehow remove every inch of offensive space between you.
Hunter finally pulled away for air, but he raised your arms above your head and pressed your wrists into the wall.
It was hard to imagine that not 30 seconds ago, you had reduced this man to a tongue-tied, purely desire driven mess. Yet now the positions had rapidly switched.
Hunter licked the water away from your neck, smiling against your skin as he felt your pulse quicken at the action. He kept one hand entrapping your wrists, but he slowly brought his other hand down, his fingertips steadily descending down your arm. âDo you know why I so rarely let you do that for me?â
You shook your head; you didnât trust that actual words would exit your lips. Goosebumps graced your body at his touch.
âBecause as talented as you are at that and as grateful as I am for you allowing me to do thatâŚâ He nuzzled his nose against the side of yours before he kissed the corner of your mouth, pulling away ever so slightly as you turned your head to kiss him properly.
The roguish, teasing grin on his face made your breath catch in your throat. Your desire grew more intense as his already low, smoky voice somehow went an octave lower and his seductive words sounded more like a deep growl as he spoke to you, and it made you weak at the knees. Your chest heaved as each yearning breath left your lungs as you watched him.
He caressed your cheek. âThereâs something else that also brings me that much pleasureâŚâ He kissed along your jaw before he carried on with his plan.
You could only observe him, the sight of his lust-fuelled gaze and the way he was suddenly so in control made your want for him burn that much hotter.
Hunter then rested his hand just at the hollow of your throat, feeling a shuddering breath leave you as you swallowed, he glanced up at your face which was watching him with both heightened curiosity and desperation as you waited for him to touch you were he knew you needed him to.
He trailed his fingers sensually down the rest of your torso before moving them tenderly up the inside of your thighs, a hint of delight flowing through him as he already felt how ready you were for him already and it was all from what had just transpiredâ he was yet to do anything. âBecause when I touch you hereâŚâ He murmured as he ever so slightly rubbed that sensitive spot between your legs, delighting in the gasp that sounded from your lips. âI can watch you fall apartâŚâ
A whimper sounded from your throat.
âAnd when I kiss you hereâŚâ He stopped his movements for the most part, instead just tenderly rubbing faint circles with his thumb as he mouthed his way down your body.
Your breathing was leaving you in short, sharp pants.
âI can watch you fall apart on my tongue.â With that, he lifted your leg onto his shoulder before his mouth joined where his fingers were. An eager moan came from his own lips as he finally got to taste you and for the moment, he wanted to savour this. You were a craving- an addiction- that he couldnât get enough of. He was in no rush, and he draw this out for as long as you both could handle it.
His name fell from your lips through a raspy groan. He knew your body so damn well and that was both a blessing and a curse. He was barely giving you enough to gain any form of satisfaction but yet it was just enough to drive you crazy with need. You scrambled for a grip on the slippery tiles as desperate cries sounded from you. One hand fumbled against the small shelf as a particularly wicked curl of his fingers made a jolt of pleasure rush through you and various shower supplies came tumbling down with an unnecessarily loud crash but neither of you paid them any attention, instead you merely clamped that hand over your mouth to quiet yourself.
âYou know I want to hear you, sweetheart.â Hunter crooned as he stopped what he was doing. The demand needed to be met before he would continue.
You nodded, through a pleasure induced daze as you removed your hand. You had to keep reminding yourself that you had a place of your own now and you could be as free as you wanted to be, there was no risk of being overheard or interrupted but it was a habit that was still proving difficult to break.
As he finally showed willing to bring you closer to the point of release, your mewls of pleasure left you without restraint.
Hunter hummed out his approval as he put his mouth back on you and began moving his fingers once more, and this time, he wasnât drawing anything out.
He wanted to watch you come.
He angled his eyes up as he found that spot that he knew would have you finding your release in no time. He let out his own appreciative sigh as he saw the way your eyes flickered shut, as he saw the way your brow furrowed, and your lips parted in sweet relief as those special breathy sighs exited from them, signally that you were close. Â
You arched your back as you went tumbling towards that blissful climax and you finished with a strangled groan, your hands tangling in Hunterâs soaked hair to ground yourself as he worked you through it.
Hunter made sure you were back to being steady on your feet before he prompted you to face the wall so he could press loving, accepting kisses to the scars on your back. âI love you... so much.â He nearly found himself following that up with the question, but he stopped himself. Too much had been planned and he knew exactly how he wanted to do it. He wasnât about to ruin it with getting too caught up in this wonderful moment.
âI love you too.â You replied softly.
Hunter placed one last kiss between your shoulder blades before he gathered up the fallen shower products that had scattered around his feet.
You braced your forehead on the cool tiles to gather yourself once more. For a moment the only sounds were the steady of jets of shower water and Hunter placing the items back on their shelf,
âOkay⌠so⌠now we need to do the actual showering part.â You said breathlessly as you finally turned around and brushed back his fringe pieces.
Hunter chuckled and nodded his agreement. âWe have a party to get to after all.â
--
âHey, I have a question.â You asked casually as you appreciatively watched Hunter get dressed. You had made no such moves yet and were instead lounging on your bed still in your bathrobe.
âWhatâs that?â Hunter asked as he finished buttoning his shirt.
âHow important is it that we attend this party?â
A wave of panic hit him, and he had to rely on old training to keep his voice steady. âIs everything okay?â Even with his fast-acting composure, he could tell his voice was strained but if you noticed, you didnât call on it since you carried on as normal in your response.
âWell, no. After that display in the shower, I find myself not quite wanting to be so social.â
Hunter held back his sigh of relief. This was something he could handle just fine. It wasnât your fault that you were looking to cause a bit of trouble, he was just glad that there wasnât a more serious reason to your original question because that would make the rest of this evening rather tricky. âGiven the fact that theyâre having it in our honour, Iâd say itâs pretty important that we go.â
You shuffled to the end of the bed and sat up. You caught his hand as he walked by you. âBut there are five other honouree people that are goingâŚâ
âSweetheartâŚâ He really had to figure out how to navigate this without giving anything away.
âNow letâs seeâŚâ You feigned pondering as you went through the options in your head and rubbed your thumb along his hand. âWeâve already done the bed, the shower, the table, the couch and the counterâŚâ
Hunterâs attempt at swallowing was interrupted as various memories flashed through his head, some highlights being your thighs wrapped around his head, you straddling his lap and his handprints imprinting on the glass of the kitchen cabinets. It was true that he had been rather insatiable lately and you had been all too willing and happy to match his enthusiasm but now was the time for self-control. He released a choked cough as he attempted to steady himself.
âBut I donât believe weâve done a wall yet...â You said coyly as you started to pull down the arm of your bathrobe to expose more of your clavicle. You also spread your legs a little wider, so the fabric hitched up your thighs as you nodded to the dresser behind him. âOr the bureauâŚâ
Hunter released a guttural, unrestrained groan before he kissed you. Hard. But just as you threaded your fingers in his hair and made to pull him on top of you, he found himself once more. He had to act now, or heâd never want to leave here. He stepped away and stopped your hand that was continuing to lower the shoulder of your robe, but he couldnât help but notice the few remaining water droplets on your neck that were calling to be kissed away. Â
âHunterâŚâ You pretended to pout as you gently yanked on the loose ends of his shirt, so he was forced to come and stand between your legs.
Hunter pushed down on your shoulders and your arms above your head. âGo.â A chaste kiss to your lips. âGet.â Another quick kiss. âDressed.â He placed one final brief kiss to your mouth before he readjusted the shoulder of your dressing gown.
âThe robe has to come off to do that though.â You whispered as you placed a tender kiss to his mouth.
Hunter huffed out a laugh as he stood tall once more. He quickly walked out the room before you had the chance to accidentally ruin everything he had put together. âDonât take too long!â He called back to you.
You released a heavy, grounding sigh before you sat up and hopped off the bed and your eyes caught sight of the case. With apprehensive curiosity, you strolled over to the new package that Lyra had gifted you, bracing yourself for what was going to be revealed.
You unclasped the lock, but you were pleasantly surprised by what was inside. It was a variety of sundresses, each one a similar design but in a variety of colours. They were a new thing for you to try but you figured a party could call for doing something different, plus you couldnât wait to see Hunterâs reaction to something like this.
You picked out a red dress and was unsurprised to see that it fit you just right. You had a rummage through the rest of the box to see if there was anything else or if it was just those dresses, but you regretted that immediately.
A horrified, strangled breath left you as you saw the three sets of lace lingerie. A red, a black and a white set were all folded neatly at the bottom of the box. You held up the red set and recognised the design immediately. You muttered a series of curse words to yourself before your eyes caught sight of a small black silk bag and the items in there left you frozen in shock. This was something you would have to keep well hidden. You slammed the lid shut and shoved it to the back of the shared closest.
--
You quietly walked down the short hallway towards the front room which served as an open planned area with a kitchen and living space. You leaned against the wall and a smile graced your face as you watched the domestic scene with fond affection- Hunter had just finished gathering and hanging up your sodden beach clothes and was proceeding to put away some dry dishes. It made your heart soar that he had settled into the domesticity of the island and the routine here so well, it made making a life with him here all the more appealing.
As much as you enjoyed watching him, and as much as you would enjoy just staying in, you knew he wanted to go to the party, and you knew you would have a good time once you were there. You just wanted a little bit more fun first. âZip me up?â
Hunter half-turned from where he was putting away a plate, but he forgot how to both breathe and operate as a functioning human as he saw you. The dish slipped out of his hands and smashed against the ground.
You smirked. That had gone even better than youâd expected. âHmm, thatâs an interesting technique. Sure, it saves space but Iâm not sure how sustainable it is in the long run.â
Hunter struggled to find his voice. He bent down to gather the broken pieces and throw them away to try to buy himself some recovery time, but it didnât help. All he could do was stare at you. The red sundress you were wearing complimented you perfectly and it showed off your body to the best degree. You were, to put it mildly, simply stunning and suddenly, his entire operation for this evening didnât seem that important anymore.
You whistled and waved your hand in an attempt to bring his attention back. âHey, Hunter, my zip?â With that, you turned around and waited.
Hunter wasnât sure how he willed his feet to move but he soon found himself behind you.
His knuckles grazed your skin as he slowly brought the zip up your body and attached the small clasp at the top. His jaw was clenched tight as he caught a whiff of the body wash and lotion you had used, and it was getting harder and harder to find the willpower to step away from you. He had a plan. Heâd had this plan for weeks yet one look at you in this dress and he was seriously considering throwing it all out the window and to hell with the consequences of it. âYou look beautiful.â He said through a deep exhale. Just one more hour. He only had to make it one more hour.
âThank you.â You said quietly as you too worked on calming yourself.
You turned to face him. âYou look pretty good too.â You complimented as you gave him an appraising look up and downâ in your attempts to distract him, youâd failed to properly take him in before. He wasnât quite wearing a suit- it would be too hot for that tonight- but the lightweight formal black button-down shirt and matching black bottoms fit his frame handsomely, and to make himself even more appealing, he had rolled the sleeves up to his forearms. âNew one of Lyraâs?â You guessed as you smoothed down the front of your dress.
Hunter nodded. He didnât offer too much detail because much of what was in his box consisted of proper suits for him and his brothers that he hoped would be useful in the near future.
âGotta hand it to her, she knows what sheâd doing.â You mused before you loosened your shoulders and linked your arm through Hunterâs elbow. âCome on, weâve got a celebration to get to.â
--
Night had fallen but the area on the colonnade was all lit up by the warm orange glow of a vast number of lanterns. The party was in full swing. Food and drinks were already flowing, and the music was getting many people up and dancing.
A playful wolf-whistle greeted you and Hunter as the two of you entered the scene.
âDamn, I am too good. What a fine-looking couple you two are.â
Evidently, by the cheery and slightly lopsided way Lyra walked over to you, she had been hitting the punch pretty hard already.
âHaving a good time?â You asked with a laugh.
âVery! This party is fantastic! Everyone here is so nice! And I got the job!!â
âLyra, thatâs awesome!â You hugged her tightly.
âCongrats.â Hunter offered mildly but sincerely.
âSo, better get used to having me around. And thatâs just as well cause youâll need me to des-â She quickly cut herself off. It would appear that alcohol only aided the inability to keep a secret.
âWant a drink?â Hunter asked you swiftly before you could follow up on her comment.
You nodded. âI just gotta talk to Lyra about something.â
Hunter couldnât very well insist you join him, but he only hoped what you needed to talk about wasnât close to what would hopefully unfold tonight. He squeezed your hand before he hastily walked towards the drinks stand.
You faced Lyra once more after he was a suitable distance away. âNow, Iâm happy for you but also rather irritated with you.â
âWhy?â Lyra asked innocently as she brought the cup to her lips to hide her grin.
You didnât believe her lack of awareness for an instant. âYou put those in that case? What were you thinking?â You hissed.
âWhy not? You were willing to before everything went to shit. I remembered the design and everything! And you have more options now!â
You shook your head. âI was feeling brave back then, that feeling has since passed.â
Lyra scoffed, âPlease, with the way the two of you are, Iâm surprised you havenât done something like that already.â
âYouâve got a retired clone sergeant and a retired ex-Jedi living on a tropical island, things arenât exactly crazy around here. Iâve lost my bold and brave streak.â You didnât think she needed to know what had had gone on in the shower and the times before her arrival because that would only aid her argument if you were being perfectly honest.
Lyra merely rolled her eyes. âItâs not a battlefield. Itâs a totally great way to switch things up, especially now that youâre in a secure living situation and you would both feel and looking fucking sexy. Plus, I bet you he would drop to his knees and do whatever you wanted if he saw you in one.â
âI will never- hey.â You relaxed quickly and cleared your throat as Hunter rejoined you.
âDid I interrupt something?â Hunter asked with a glance between the two of you as he passed you your drink.
Lyra angled herself towards him. âHunter, let me ask you a question. If she had certain-â
âYou interrupted nothing.â You interjected sharply.
âUm okay.â Hunter didnât press the matter of whatever it was the two of you were debating. âCome on, the others are over there.â He pointed to where the bulk of the dancing and partying was taking place.
âJust think about it!â Lyra implored.
You glared at her as Hunter led you away. Â
Lyra simply grinned and raised her glass in your direction. âEnjoy the party!â
--
The time was drawing near, and Hunter was just confirming with Shep that everything was set for when he got back when Hunter noticed you and Crosshair sitting and chatting, but you were also swaying to the beat of the music. He bade Shep farewell before he approached you.
--
The party was still going full swing and after you had the chance to catch up with Echo, you and Crosshair had retired to a seat on the side to people watch. The two of you sat in comfortable silence as you casually observed the goings on around you. There was a healthy split between the people by the food and drink area and on the dancefloor. Wrecker was enthusiastically dancing with Omega and Lyana and Phee, Tech and Echo were engaged in a pleasant conversation a few metres away and Hunter was chatting to Shep by the bar.
âSo, youâre really sure about him?â Crosshair asked, breaking the silence first.
You frowned in utter confusion as you angled your head to face him. âWhat kind of a question is that?â
Crosshair shrugged. âJust checking.â
âYouâre leaving that a bit late down the road are you not?â You were baffled by his sudden interest in the status of your relationship.
âWell, I havenât been here for all of it. Trust me, Iâm for grateful for that than Iâm not. You two can be pretty sickening.â He added cheekily.
You rolled your eyes at his true Crosshair mannerisms. âSo, is this your bizarre way of being a protective brother?â
âIâm looking out for both of you. He has some pretty annoying habits you know. Iâd hate for you to be stuck with him before you fully knew what you were getting into.â
You snorted. âIâm all good, thanks Crosshair.â
Crosshair waited a beat of silence before his voice turned more serious. âJust donât hurt him, alright? Heâs been hurt enough already, we all have, the cycle has to end at some point.â
Your gaze softened. âI wonât ever hurt him.â You squeezed his left hand in reassurance before the two of you went back to relaxed quiet and you saw Hunter making his way towards you. Â
The music turned slow and that caused a brief dispersal of the dance floor, which included Wrecker, Lyana and Omega to depart. Â
--
Hunter reached you and held out his hand in invitation. âCome on.â
You looked at his extended hand, then at his face to see that he was totally serious. âSince when can you dance?â You asked, completely taken aback.
Hunter, nodded to Crosshair. âBack when we were first getting success as a squad, we thought it would be a way to impress anyone that came into 79s when we had leave from the war.â
You directed your question to both of them. âDid it work?â
Crosshair smirked as he said, âIt worked for one of us.â
You laughed as you glanced to Hunter and said with a teasing lilt to your voice, âIf youâre that bad at it, I donât know if I want to.â
Hunter sighed. âHey, I wasnât bad, I had options, I just had a bad habit of failing to follow through.â
Crosshair continued to goad him. âIs that how youâre remembering it?â
Hunterâs voice went more defensive than he wouldâve liked as he addressed his brother. âWhat about that red head who kept coming to our table the night we were celebrating the win at Boz Pity. She kept talking to me, remember that?â
âI remember who she left with.â Crosshair replied smugly.
You, having enjoyed watching their brotherly spat, took Hunterâs hand to stop the dispute going any further. âI will say, dance lessons were not really on the teaching agenda for Jedi, especially during the war, I donât know-â
Hunter pulled you to your feet. âI promise to not let you trip.â
You reluctantly complied. âAnd if I stand on your toes?â
Hunter just led you to where the other people were dancing. âI wonât even react. And itâs slow music, I doubt you could inflict much damage.â
âYou underestimate me.â You mumbled nervously.
--
âYouâre too tense.â Hunter observed as he watched the way your eyes were fixed firmly on the ground.
âThis is how your feet will continue to have feeling.â You grunted as you kept an intense focus on your movements. Even though the two of you were mostly slowly moving in beat to the soft music, your grip on his hand was tight and the one on his shoulder was digging into him.
Hunter released a low chuckle. âHere. Try this.â He adjusted the stance, so your arms were around the back of his neck and his coiled around your waist, so the front of your body was close to his. Now, the two of you pretty much stayed put and just enjoying the moment of being in each otherâs company.
âI find it hard to believe you never followed through.â You uttered in quiet disbelief. The two of you werenât moving from your spot all that much but the secure way he held you and the aura of calm confidence he projected was making it hard to think straight.
âIt never felt right.â Â
You hummed out a pleased sigh as you placed your head in the crook of his neck.
âI guess I was just waiting for you.â Hunter added softly as he rested his head against yours.
You removed your head from the crook of his neck, and you saw the heartfelt meaning behind his eyes. You leaned up to kiss him and for a minute, the entire buzz of the party faded away and it was just you and him sharing in a loving moment together.
As music the music came to a stop, Hunter whispered in your ear, âWant to get outta here?â
You nodded silently and intertwined his hand in yours.
Hunter took a deep breath as he led you away.
Ten minutes left.
--
The rest of them had gathered to watch the two of you leave.
âLetâs go!â Omega gasped eagerly.
âHold on, kid.â Echo caught her arm as she went to dash after them. âFive-minute head start, remember?â
âRight, right.â Omega agreed as she recalled the particular details of the plan.
âTechnically, only Echo should be the one going.â Tech reminded.
âYeah, Tech, I donât really think that was ever going to happen.â Echo replied simply.
âDamn right! Weâre all getting to see this!â Wrecker argued.
Echo raised his eyebrows in Techâs direction. âSee. And you were never going to stay because you kept talking about recording it anyway.â He pointed out.
âMy phrase was merely pointing out that we are all ignoring a part of the plan Hunter quite specifically told the rest of us not to get involved with.â Tech responded.
âWeâre not big on following orders.â Omega said with a shrug.
âIf youâre all done debating what is a pointless argument because we were all always going to watch, itâs time to go.â Crosshair drawled.
--
âUh, Hunter, home is that way?â You pointed in the direction he was currently walking in the opposite direction of.
âHow about a beach walk first?â Hunter offered.
You gave him a surprised smile but nodded your agreement.
--
It didnât matter how much reassurance heâd received in the recent weeks that you would say yes. His heart was damn near pounding out his chest the closer the two of you got to the sight and his mind started to spiral. What if you said no? What if you hated the very idea? He shouldâve spoken to you about this first but wait, there was something to be said for knowing when it felt right wasnât there? But maybe he shouldâve-
âYour palm is sweaty.â You stopped and got him to face you. âAnd itâs not just cause of that that I can tell that youâre nervous.â
Great, so much careful planning and keeping you away from people that were far too eager to give you hints and his own usually steady nerves were about to give it all away. He had done everything right so far yet now he was a sweaty mess.
âHunter, is everything okay?â
âEverything-â Dammit his voice came out all cracked. He cleared his throat and started again. âEverything is fine, I promise.â He started to guide you again. âIf you just follow me a little bit furtherâŚâ
âFollow you to what? Why are you being soâŚâ Your voice trailed off and released an awed gasp as you saw the scene ahead of you. A small section of the beach was set up with a canopy and illuminated in a warm glow by strings of lights and a short carpet led the way inside. âWhat occasion have I forgotten and how quickly can I make it up to you?â You said as you started to panic.
Hunter was quick to reassure you. âYou havenât forgotten anything, and I think we stopped keeping track of things like that a long time ago.â
âWell, arenât we the romantic pair.â You said dryly as you looked on in wonder at the fairy lights around you before the two of you came to a stop at the end of the walkway and stood in front of a Â
âI think we do alright.â Right on queue, the puck began to play the video Tech had put together, courtesy of Hunterâs guidance.
Your throat clogged with emotion at the display in front of you. The montage was starting right from the moment you had made yourself known to the squad and to when youâd first met Hunter and it was clear something transpired between the two of you. Something that you both would dismiss or shove away for a long time.
Hunter heard the footsteps and there were more than what he had ordered. âIâll be right back.â He kissed your temple. âKeep watching.â He instructed as he saw you getting ready to question what was going on.
You couldnât understand why he was leaving but you couldnât tear your eyes away from the images. It seemed it was progressing to show a mix of how your relationship had transpired over the years. From every emotionally charged yet pushed aside moment, to every squabble and every time the rest of the team trapped the two of you somewhere to talk as well as the infuriating times each of them attempted to convince either of you to do something about your feelings. It showed the highs and lows of everything that had happened since Kaller too and it reminded you of just how much youâd all endured and survived.
It was a strange thing to watch, to see how obvious your feelings were yet you knew youâd waited so long before acting on them. It was so evident that the two of you were always drawn together and it would always be that way, the love radiated through, and it was something that had continued to this day.
--
âYouâre not supposed to be here.â Hunter hissed as he herded his brothers and Omega behind some rocks. Keeping this secret was hard enough and he was almost there but the appearance of his supportive and rather determined family might be the final thing that gave everything away before he had the chance to even ask you yet.
âBut Echo was always allowed to-â Omega started to protest quietly.
âI needed him here.â Hunter couldnât risk receiving this item until the last minute since he wasnât sure heâd be able to hide it well enough from you and the last thing he wanted was you to find it accidentally before he had the chance to do things how he wanted.
âHere it is.â Echo handed said item over to him.
âThank you.â Hunter said appreciatively as he took the small velvet encased box. âBut how hard did you try telling this lot not to come down?â
âEh, not very.â Echo admitted simply. âCome on, Hunter. We all wanted to be here to watch this.â
Hunter did know that, and he wasnât truly upset, he actually really appreciated everything theyâd all helped with. âAlright, alright. Just keep quiet, please?â
Everyone nodded.
Hunter knew they were never going to follow that, but he didnât have time to push the matter.
âBetter get going. By my calculations, the video should be finishing in the next minute.â Tech informed him.
--
The video came to an end, and you couldnât believe Hunter missed sharing this with you. You sensed him approach but as you turned to question why heâd left, your breath caught in your throat, and you forgot how to form words as you saw him down on one knee and presenting a ring to you.
--
Hunter had rehearsed this so many times, yet his adrenaline was pumping like crazy, but he was determined to see this through to its proper end. He wasnât about to ruin it because he got jittery. He took a deep, grounding breath before he started to speak. He kept his voice low and though he spoke quietly, he filled each word with intense and sincere meaning.
âI spent so much of the war doing what was asked of me. Winning each battle, completing each mission and that was easy for me, it was comfortable, I knew what I was doing, what my responsibilities were but I was also running on autopilot. I kept moving, doing what needed to be done, it was a routine that I didnât see myself really breaking f-from. Un-â
He paused to settle his own emotions that rising in his chest and throat. âUntil you. You came into my life, and Iâd never known Iâd been living in a galaxy of grey until I met you and you, with your fire and your strength, brought the colour Iâd been missing. You could probably tell from that holo, but everything changed that day and Iâve never been more grateful for it. I knew from the second we met on Devaron that I was hooked. I was yours and I never wanted you to leave. I love you.â He said fiercely. âI love all of you. I love your kindness. I love your mind. I love your courage. I even love your stubbornness, no matter how much stress it causes me. I love how, no matter what, you donât stop fighting. I love having you by my side, even if youâre arguing with me. I love how youâre always ready to face whatever is sent your way, unless itâs a spider and then youâre more than happy to surrender the room.â He added, the corner of his mouth twitching to hide his teasing grin before he carried on, âI love how you are with Omega. I love how well you fit in with my brothers. I love you in a way Iâd never seen myself capable of, yet you make it so easy to do. Weâve been through so much; Iâve nearly lost you more times than I care to count but it also told me somethingâŚâ
He allowed himself a second to breathe before he went into the final part, âI want it all with you. I know weâve already got the home, the kid and the dog, and youâve got the crazy in-laws.â He smiled as you let out a choked but genuine laugh at that. âI want to take the final step with you which is why Iâm down on one knee and asking you this question...â He inhaled as he finally asked, âWill you marry me?â He finished and waited anxiously. He really hoped the silent tears running down your face were happy ones.
--
âWrecker, get in the back, I need to record this, and I cannot see past you.â Tech demanded in a hushed whisper as the four of them watched from behind a cluster of rocks.
âDid she say yes? I canât hear anything.â Wrecker asked, his voice rising slightly in distress. He didnât want to miss any of this.
Crosshair spoke up next, âI see tears so it could go either way.â
Omega slapped his arm. âIâm sure theyâre happy tears.âÂ
âHereâs an idea⌠why donât we wait to see it all play out first before we start talking about it?â Echo suggested sensibly.
--
His family were quite possibly the least subtle people on the planet. Hunter still hadnât heard your answer yet, but he could hear them no problem. He waved a hand behind him to signal at them to shut up.
A happy sob mixed with laughter echoed from your lips as you looked past him saw the group of people further down the beach keenly looking on.
You brought your eyes back to Hunter. You had so many things you wanted to say, so many affirmations you wanted to give yet the first dumb thing that left your mouth was an answer in the form of a question, âAre you sure?â
Hunter chuckled as he placed the ring on your finger, the stones dazzling under the moon and fairy light. Â âIâve never been more sure of anything in my life.â
You flexed your hand as you admired the stunning ring. The design of the silver band was simple with a white round cluster diamond in the centre but what really got to you was the two smaller blue diamonds on either side of it. Their shade was exactly like that of your old lightsaber. Your words left you in a frantic state of joy. âItâs beautiful- You got- how- I mean-â You couldnât find the words. Instead, you just fell to your knees in front of him and kissed him fervently. I love you; I love you; I love you.
Hunter cradled your face in his hands as he pulled away for a short moment to respond, âI love you too.â
Feeling a bit more collected, you pressed your forehead against his. And I meant to say that I am yours too. I may not have realised it then, but I was yours on Devaron. I saw you, spoke to you and Iâd never experienced a feeling like that before. Iâd spent so much time doubting if Iâd made the right choice by leaving the Order, if I was wrong for believing what I did, but then I met this squad. You retreated a couple inches to look Hunter directly in his brown eyes which were filled with emotion, and you added even more devotion to your tone. And I met you and suddenly I finally realised what Iâd been missing. So, yes. Yes, I would love to marry you.
Hunter grinned adoringly at you before he kissed you again. Both of you smiling hard as you kissed one another in short, passionate bursts.
A series of whoops and gleeful cries interrupted your moment and the two of you got to your feet just as Wrecker bounded over and picked the two of you up, squeezing tightly.
âCongratulations!!â Wrecker bellowed as he put you down again.
âIâm so happy for you!â Omega cried as she and Batcher went next. She wrapped her arms around both your waists and the dog took turns jumping up on the two of you. âLet me see the ring!â Omega requested enthusiastically as she pulled away from you both. âAh itâs so pretty!â
âAbout time.â Echo said kindly with Crosshair nodding in agreement. Â
âIndeed.â Tech concurred as he too smiled at you both.
âYou all knew?â You asked as you wiped away a few remaining tears with your uncaptured hand.
âYou think Hunter could pull this off by himself?â Crosshair said with a mocking scoff in his brotherâs direction, but he gave you both a genuine and pleased smile.
âLook, I had the ideas and I just needed help with the logistics of everything.â Hunter still felt the need to clarify.
âSo, all of thisâŚâ You trailed off and gestured to the stunning set up that had been arranged.
âYeah, they all helped me out.â Hunter told you. âAnd it wasnât like Iâd be able to keep it from them anyway.â
âAll of you helped?â You repeated again. What had you done to deserve finding such a perfect family?
âI obviously put together the video and I was recording this moment.â Tech stated, adjusting his goggles. âItâs just as well I back everything up or the Marauder getting destroyed wouldâve proven to be more problematic than it already was.â
âAnd Omega and I set this up!â Wrecker boasted proudly.
âAnd I helped with the ring.â Echo said. âHunter laid out the design and I knew a guy who knew a guy who owed him a favour.â
âAnd you?â You asked Crosshair with a smile.
Crosshair feigned an aggrieved sigh.
âYou were too late in claiming the set-up job.â Tech recalled. âAnd Echo and I had very clear responsibilities, you were just too slow.â
âYes, Crosshair, unfortunately, had the worst job out of all of them.â Hunter revealed.
âOh?â You regarded Crosshair curiously.
âI had to listen to him panic over and over again about every single detail and doubt in his head over this whole thing. Didnât matter that we all knew you were going to say yes, he was a nervous wreck. It was up to me to keep him sane.â Â Crosshair told you. He truly hadnât minded, and it had offered more opportunities for him to hone his skills since he was a hand down.
You looked at the man who was usually so put together and who had never let even the most daunting of chaotic war battles phase him. âSeriously?â
Hunter nodded and awkwardly rubbed his hand along the side of his neck. âYeah, he was the one I needed to knock some sense into me, sometimes literally I might add.â He said with a pointed look in Crosshairâs direction. Â
âThat way worked the best.â Crosshair said with a nonchalant shrug.
Hunter turned to you again, âAnd it still wasnât enough. Believe it or not, I didnât want to start sweating beforehand.â
You laughed before you addressed all of them. âThank you. All of you. This was absolutely perfect! Iâm so grateful!â
Another group hugged happened before Wrecker and Omega excitedly bounced on soles of their feet.
âCome on, the partyâs just getting started!â Wrecker urged.
âWait, I thought-â You broke off and looked to Hunter.
Hunter gave you a knowing grin. âYou didnât think the people of Pabu were going to let this go uncelebrated, did you?â
You inhaled sharply. âThis partyâŚâ
âIs also serving as a congratulations on getting engaged.â Tech confirmed as he walked past you. âHunter and Shep thought the whole thing through.â
âItâs a good thing you said yes or that wouldâve been really awkward.â Echo commented with a smile as he too headed back up.
Well, that explained why Hunter was so dismissive of the change in attitudes the two of you had received in recent times as well as his caginess towards certain phrases or questions you asked. And Lyraâs sudden appearance as well as her âgiftsâ checked out a bit more too. You stared at Hunter, incredibly impressed. âYou somehow managed to plan this entire thing and I had no idea?â
Hunter nodded. âA lot of kind people live around us, but the price of their assistance was that theyâre terrible at secret keeping and also made my life a living hell.â Hunter kidded before he kissed you once more and led you back the way you came, the delightful cold metal of your ring pressing against his fingers.
--
The walk back up to the colonnade was filled with cheers and celebratory whistles as the two of you reappeared. Much of the party remained the same except now a huge congratulations banner was on display.
Shep came over to you and hugged you. âCongratulations!â
âThank you, Shep. For all of it. This is amazing!â You returned his warm embrace.
Shep parted and shook Hunterâs hand. âEverything go well?â
âVery. Thank you for all your help. I couldnât have done it without you.â Hunter said gratefully.
âIâm just glad you finally did it. We were all losing hope that it wasnât going to happen.â
âThey were?â You nudged Hunterâs shoulder playfully.
âAfter we recovered from Tantiss, I was apparently still moving too slowly.â Hunter said lightly.
âWe need not dwell on such things now. Please, enjoy the celebrations!â Shep waved goodbye as he went to make the rounds once more.
âIncoming.â Hunter warned you.
âWhat-â You were nearly tackled by the woman who had clattered into your side.
âAbout damn time!â
âThat seems to be the general consensus.â You said as you steadied yourself against Lyraâs eager hug.
âLet me see!â Lyra took your hand and gasped in admiration. âOh, itâs gorgeous!â She then looked to Hunter. âYou did good, well done!â She swivelled her attention back to you. âAnd you! You are going to get the best wedding dress ever! I have so many designs in mind already!â
âCanât wait for that.â You said and you meant it but that didnât stop the wary laugh you emitted either.
âMy drink is empty, but we will talk more!â With that, she hurried away.
âIâm never going to be able to keep up with her on anything.â You commented as you watched her go, a soft smile on your face.
âRather you than me. Iâm all set.â Hunter said smugly.
Your response was interrupted by an approaching Rodian.
âCourtesy of Phee.â
You and Hunter took the cocktails from the tray the rather timid new island resident offered and looked into each otherâs eyes as you clinked glasses. The two of you too caught up in the bliss of the moment to notice that your cinnamon sugar-rimmed glass had tracings of a white powder mixed in amongst it.
--
The next morning
To say you felt like hell would be an understatement. You awakened with a deep groan and rolled over onto your front.
Hunter woke up to the sound and saw that you were awake, but you were face down in your pillow. âAnd how are you feeling this morning?â He quipped.
You groaned again. âI am going to say this with all the love I can possibly muster⌠fuck off.â The threat lost some weight since your voice was muffled by the presence of the pillow.
âI didnât think Jedi could get hungover.â Hunter said, a teasing lilt to his voice.
âYes well, I was always making waves one way or another and here is another prime example of that. How many of those damn Phee cocktails did I drink?â
âI only saw you drink one, but the party ran late, and we werenât together the entire time, but you were with Lyra a bunch, so I figured you were going her pace. You were pretty out of it when we were heading home, you fell asleep instantly.â
The entire evening post that one cocktail was a total blur, so you just had to accept that. The deep pain and nausea you were experiencing just had to be the effects of a first and truly awful hangover. âIâm so sorry. I really didnât plan on that at all.â
Hunter shushed your unnecessarily apology and placed light kisses along your shoulders and down your spine. âWhat do you need?â
âA lobotomy and a new stomach.â You grunted.
âNaturally⌠and if I canât get that arranged?â
You angled your head to face him and rubbed your thumb along his cheek affectionately. âI just need a few hours alone to sleep it off, Iâll be okay.â
Hunter got out of bed and quietly got dressed. âIâll see what I can find to help. Iâll be back in an hour.â He lightly squeezed your shoulder
You watched him leave and let that concern youâd been feeling take hold. You felt absolutely exhausted and though youâd never been hungover before, something about this felt different but you couldnât think of what or why that would be.
You pushed it to the back of your mind for now and focused on sleeping and feeling better. You had a future to plan, you werenât about to let this throw a wrench in things.
--
Hunter had been waylaid by more people who he didnât have the time to both thank and accept their congratulations from so he was later than heâd told you but the minute he entered the house, he knew something was wrong and it wasnât because he was late.
That was when he heard the sounds of someone- well it would only be you- graphically vomiting. He dumped the supplies heâd gathered and hustled to the open refresher door where you were hunched over the toilet.
âSweetheart, how long have you been like this?â Hunter asked, his concern evident as he rushed in and took over holding your hair just as you finished throwing up.
âUh, when did you leave?â You rasped through sore, heavy breaths as you righted yourself but still remained slouched against small gap between the toilet and the shower.
âAn hour and a half ago.â Hunter said quietly as he sat down next to you and stroked your knee in a soft, consoling gesture.
âOh good, I got to sleep for thirty minutes.â You said wryly through gritted teeth. âThen I guess itâs been pretty much every ten minutes.â
Hunter got to his feet and ran a washcloth under some cold water for you before he dabbed it against your clammy forehead and the back of your neck. âYou should get back to bed.â He said tenderly.
âI tried earlier but leaving the bathroom floor isnât an opti-â You stopped short before you held your head over the toilet bowl and the whole process began again. âAny time you want to take this off, say the word.â You mumbled as you pitifully waved your left hand in Hunterâs direction before another ugly wretch sounded from you and your body heaved as somehow more vomit left your system.
âEnough of that.â Hunter soothed as he gathered your hair again. âI think we need to go see Dalia.â
You managed to shake your head just as the last of your stomach contents dispensed from your system. She was someone people go to with an actual injury or medical problem and this was certainly not that. This was just you not being able to handle your alcohol... it had to be. Â Â
âThen how about Tech?â Hunter compromised quietly as he rubbed delicate circles on your back.
You resisted the urge to wince at the action that usual would bring you comfort but instead was only sharpening the thankfully now dulling ache in your limbs. âNo, no. Iâm-â You sat back once more and shakily got to your feet. âI think I just hurled my entire insides out which seems to have helped.â You accepted the water from him, and you had to make a conscious effort to drink slowly since your parched and sore throat welcomed the cool liquid. The nausea and general bodily pain were less, and you didnât want to make a fuss, especially after all that had been done for you the night before. âIâm feeling better.â You said but as you went to step out the refresher, you immediately became lightheaded and swayed violently on your feet.
âSweetheart, please.â Hunter implored as he caught your shoulders. Heâd seen hangovers but this seemed more serious than your typical post drinking consequences and it was worrying him.
âOkay, we can start with Tech.â You conceded as the room finally came back into focus.
âIâll comm him.â
âNo, I want to walk. I donât think being cooped up is doing me any favours.â You said as firmly as you could convey.
Even in your weakened state, Hunter could tell that was a point he wasnât going to win an argument on. He gently placed his arm around you as you gingerly made your way to the door.
--
From afar, the Rodian and Twilek watched through macrobinoculars as their target left her home with her joined up with the rest of the clones.
âHow is she out and about?â The rodian remarked in astonishment.
The twilek sighed in aggravation. âRemember what the boss said, sheâs a fighter and sheâs strong. You clearly got the dose wrong. Sheâs able to be out here cause she had to have thrown it all up.â
âBut the boss also wants her alive, I gave the amount I was sure would leave her vulnerable but wouldnât kill her.â
âWell, we canât take her whilst sheâs surrounded by that group anyway, and even if we get her alone, she needs to be fully incapacitated for us to even have a shot...â
âWhat are you saying?â The rodian asked nervously. Heâd never been as sure or as excited about this job as his twilek partner was, but the money was too good to pass up. But there was a new kind of sociopathic gleam in the twilekâs eyes that unnerved him.
âIâm saying we up the dose until her body canât fight it.â Life here was slow and the satisfaction heâd glean from watching you and the people around you hopelessly attempt to figure out and fight what was wrong with you was an opportunity too tempting to ignore.
To the rodian, that sounded awfully risky. Both for them and their target. This stuff was extremely lethal even in a small amount. Plus, the longer they lingered, the higher the chance that theyâd be discovered. And he knew his poisons- this one was one of his own inventions too- which was how he also knew it was particularly volatile when given in large quantities. The build-up of symptoms was designed to make the recipient so agonised and weakened that theyâd wish for a death that would never arrive but that was when administered at regular intervals of the same low quantityâ death didnât have to be the end result, the torture was what one would buy this poison for. But, if they went with this strategy, every deadly symptom would hit you all at once and he knew youâd never survive that which wasnât useful to their specific remit. However, the twilek had been put in charge and he wasnât someone he wanted to be on the bad side of. âThe boss wonât be happyâŚâ
The twilek dismissed that without skipping a beat, âSo, we wonât tell her yet. We just need to get the Jedi to the boss alive for the premium cut of the deal. After that, who the hell cares how she ends up.â Â His voice wavered in an attempt to stay level-headed with the rodian. This whole poisoning method was so tiresome- he much preferred a straight fight- but theyâd been warned off that with this whole squad. Hence why he was stuck with this jittery rodian who had gotten into this line of work through offering his services and using his skills as an apothecary for what sensitive people would deem immoral uses and gains. But even he had to admit, a Jedi was easier to apprehend if they couldnât fight back and everyone here was so stupidly trusting, it made getting access to you almost too easy. The trickiest and most time-consuming part would be getting you alone but from their brief, he knew that time would arrive sooner or later, he just needed to be patient.
--
3 weeks later
You finished dry-heaving and risked a glance in the mirror above the sink as you slowly went upright as it became clear nothing was coming up. You regretted that decision immediately.
You barely recognised the person staring back at you.
Your clothes stuck to you uncomfortably. The fever was a new addition as of last week and your hair was slick with sweat, and you wiped away the drops slowly sliding down your temples.
Your face was sunken and devoid of all life.
Dark circles were under your eyes, so dark that they couldâve been mistaken for bruises. There was no light behind them at all, no sign of that lively spark that had once been a constant part of you.
It was as if all your fire and vibrancy had evaporated.
You looked like a shell of a human being.
To top it all off, you noticed spots of blood at the corners of your mouth and in the saliva that youâd hacked up, but you put that down to the strain your throat had been put through. Cleaning up, you took one last strengthening breath but even that was proving to be more effort than youâd expected. You then heard a quiet knock on the other side of the door
You opened the refresher door to see Hunter standing waiting with his now standard worried expression on his face and your flask of water. Heâd stopped offering you food in the early stages when it became clear you couldnât hold it down and even water appeared to be a struggle.
You rejoined the group of people in the living room who were all here to supposedly help you plan the ceremony but all you got was the sea of nervous and concerned expressions from your squad- and that included Echo who had planned to leave once you were feeling better, but that day was yet to arrive- and Dalia. âIâm fine.â You exhaled wearily as you sat down. You thought just flinging yourself into what shouldâve been a good distraction would aid in your recovery but, aside from the reduction in vomiting, things werenât looking that much improved. In fact, youâd probably admit theyâd gotten worse. You realised there were two faces missing. âWhere are Shep and Lyra?â You asked, your voice strained and hoarse. You rubbed your arms because, despite the humid day, you felt goosebumps rise on your skin.
Wrecker placed a blanket around your shoulders.
âThey didnât think discussing flower arrangements was a smart use of your energy.â Crosshair remarked in a clipped tone, but it came from a place of care. He, like the rest of them, was growing more and more disturbed as your condition continued to deplete.
You lacked the gumption to argue with him so instead you just nodded in acknowledgement that youâd heard him.
Hunter noted you still hadnât drunk from the water heâd handed you. He tapped the cup to prompt you to do so. âIf you would just lie down...â
You did it for him but even water tasted wrong as it went down your throat and it really didnât sit well. âRemember that stubbornness you love?â You said through a grimace. Plus, sleep pretty much eluded you these days.
âThis is one of those times where it drives me crazy.â Hunter muttered fretfully.
âIf I just sit around, Iâll go insane. I-â You lost energy halfway through your attempted to explain your reasoning. Instead, you readied yourself for the medical questions from Tech and Dalia- the town healer- that were sure to come your way now.
âYour fever is getting worse.â Tech observed as he took your vitals.
âBacta wonât do you any good anymore. Youâre just burning it off.â Dalia said as she confirmed Techâs words.
âAnd I checked with AZ, his recent round of tests came up with nothing.â Omega said defeatedly, patting Batcher in an attempt to quell her worries.
âSo, what else can you do?â Hunter asked Dalia and Tech anxiously. It really felt like they were running out of options. He saw you hunch over in pain, and he didnât need to touch you to feel the heat radiating off you. He instinctively reached out to offer you some semblance of physical comfort, but he knew that hurt you now, so he stopped himself.
Tech started first, âWe can test for-â
You straightened up and once the room stopped spinning, put on a brave face. âLook, we ruled everything out. Itâs just stress, Tech. Besides, Iâm not even throwing up anymore, itâs just dry heaving so thatâs progress.â You said, attempting for levity but you were too exhausted to convey it.
âIâve seen you stressed; your symptoms were not of this format nor this severe.â
âSo, itâs a different type of stress.â You said tiredly as you forced yourself to stay upright.
âAnd your pain?â Dalia asked as she took examined you as best she could in this particular circumstance. Your medical case was infuriating, one because she liked you and hated seeing you in this state, and two, because she hated not knowing how to help you. Everything she had attempted had proven useless. She knew your ailments but had no idea what was causing them. Your pain wasnât localised, and no pain killers were working. All she knew for sure was that you were incredibly dehydrated and sleep-deprived, your entire body ached, you couldnât stomach anything, and you had a fever that was reaching near dangerous levels. How you still functioning had to be due to your special abilities, but it was also a testament to your sheer strength and force of will.
The pain was getting harder and harder to ignore. âWellâŚâ You nervously fidgeted with your ring.
âItâs worse?â Dalia and Hunter said together in the same troubled tone.
âLetâs just say the sedatives youâve given me to sleep are losing their effectiveness.â You mumbled.
âI can give you a stronger dose.â Dalia offered. It wasnât a suggestion she liked giving but she was running out of ideas.
âIâm not spending my time half awake and barely alive.â The irony of the comment given your present condition was not lost on you though. âI still get a few hours with what youâve already provided. Itâll do.â Although, saying you got even a few hours was also a generous statement. Â
âYou canât be serious.â Echo couldnât help but protest, voice rising in concern. âA few hours arenât enough to-â
âEchoâŚâ Hunter warned. Heâd already gone down this path with you and it was something youâd never budge on.
Dalia heaved a sigh as she finished up and took a fresh blood sample for comparison to previous ones. She readied to leave. âLook, me being here throwing useless suggestions your way isnât helping either. Best I can advise is slow down. Iâm going to run through your labs again.â With that, Dalia got to her feet and headed for the door.
âThanks for coming by.â You said to her, your voice heavy with effort it took to sound somewhat normal.
âFor the record, that was not convincing.â Crosshair told you as he took your water canteen to refill it since Hunter was seeing Dalia out. âWhy didnât you take the damn sedatives?â
âIf Hunter canât even get me to do that, what makes you think you can?â You pointed out as you curled in on yourself. You also knew they truly wouldnât make a difference.
You were growing more and more aware of the reality of your situation, and it wasnât anything that could be prevented.
--
Hunter caught Daliaâs arm just before she exited. âDalia, she physically canât go on like this for much longer. And itâs not just because sheâs refusing to ease up. There are days where I can convince her to just stay in bed, but itâs not helping.â He whispered, doing his best to keep his voice level as his worries threatened to overcome him.
âHunter, Iâm sorry. Iâm looking into everything, I promise.â Dalia said in a quiet voice. âTech and I even checked for poisons, but nothing came up. But Iâm not going to stop, I swear it.â
Hunter sighed heavily and pinched the bridge of his nose. âI know, Dalia. Thank you.â Hunter said sincerely before he shut the door and took a calming breath as he turned around and filled him with both sadness but gratitude. All of them were doing what they could do support you.
He watched as Wrecker and Omega delicately fussed with your blanket, Tech continued to study furiously on his datapad for anything that might correlate to what was causing your illness, and even Crosshair was making sure you were drinking water regularly. But then, he saw that recognisable look in your eyes, and he saw Echo help you to your feet before you staggered to the refresher, and he exhaled shakily as he got control over his own deep anxieties over your condition.
He followed you to the refresher again, ignoring the fretful looks his family were sending both his and each otherâs way.
--
You hadnât managed to lock him out this time, so he was able to enter, shut the door and collect the hair falling forward around your face. Every miserable effort your body put you through in an attempt to rid you of whatever it was that was causing this sickness only exacerbated the strain on your worn out and frail form. He kept trying to not fixate on it because they were all working on figuring this out and he had to believe that someone would find something⌠because he knew you were running out of time.
You finished up and exhaled a shuddering breath, âIt hurts, Hunter. Everything just hurts.â You admitted, your voice racked with agony. You only wanted it to stop. You needed it to stop.
Hunterâs chest tightened. âWeâre going to find out what this is.â He promised. He reached for you but hesitated.
The need to be held by him overpowered the subsequent discomfort and you folded into his embrace and let the silent defeated tears finally fall.
--
âI really hate this, you know.â Hunter griped worriedly as he got ready to leave you at the door and spend the night with his brotherâs and Omega. Somehow him saying you needed to get to sleep had turned into you sleeping here by yourself. Despite the fact that theyâd all wanted to spend the night here; youâd gotten them to agree to leave you alone. How youâd managed to do that, he had absolutely no idea.
You knew he did but with all your tossing and turning in your feverish delirium, he wasnât getting much rest either and you hated that more than you hated your own sickness. You raised your hand, your arm feeling unnaturally heavy, and placed it on his chest to quell his fears but even that simple action sent a sharp pain through your limbs.
Hunter noticed your efforts to conceal your discomfort and what youâd said in the refresher was still plaguing his head. How could you expect him to leave you like this. âPlease let me stay, I really donât mind-â
âHunter, you havenât had a solid nightâs sleep since the night of the party. Thereâs no sense in us both suffering here.â You just about managed to give him a smile of reassurance. âItâs just one night and youâre only a few houses down. If I need anything, Iâll get you on the comm, I promise.â
âI wonât sleep any better away from you. I-â
âBut here you have no choice. I need to know you at least had the option.â You insisted as you fought against the urge to slump into his arms. Your entire body felt like lead.
âBut-â
âIâll see you in the morning.â You said with finality before your voice softened. âIâm only asking you do this for one night. Just one night where I donât have to worry about you.â
âWorry about me?â Hunter repeated with combined fondness and exasperation. At least that sounded more like you. âSweetheart, the only person that anyone needs to worry about is you and that should include you.â
âWhat if I promise to spend all my time tonight worrying only about myself?â You offered, a hint of your old spark coming through before it was squashed by another bout of pain settling in your muscles. Your jaw clenched in an attempt to keep your groan contained. You thumb fiddled with your ring in an attempt to distract yourself.
Hunter picked up on that too but not wanting to put you under the strain of further deliberation, released a long, drawn-out breath and managed a stiff and reluctant nod of consent to this idea.
âThank you.â You whispered. âI love you.â
âI love you too.â Hunter replied as he caressed your fingertips with his own. It was the closest to an affection gesture that he could offer you now.
âBatcher is going to stay with you.â Omega said with a slightly nervous smile as she patted the hound farewell. âJust in case.â She knelt down in front of the dog and stroked the underside of her chin. âLook after her, Batcher.â
Batcher gave her an affirmative bark in reply before she came and sat by your side.
âThanks kid.â You waved as she and the others departed but Hunter still lingered. âGo.â You ordered with a half-smile.
With one final look in your direction, Hunter finally forced himself to leave.
You shut the door and braced your forehead against it as a fresh wave of dizziness and pain coursed through your body. You felt a wet nose nuzzle against your hand with a quiet whine. You opened your eyes to see Batcher looking up at you with an intense, concerned stare. âIâm alright, girl.â You winced as you pushed yourself away. You were employing the strategy that if you told yourself that enough times, maybe one day it would prove to be true.
You debated the effort of going all the way to your bed, but your body gave up halfway there, so you decided on the convenience of the couch, Batcher curled up on the floor beside you.
--
Hours had passed. You werenât sleeping but you were working on attempting to trick your body into thinking it could by keeping your eyes shut.
The sound of barking caused you to finally give up and open them which you did, and you were greeted by the sight of Batcher snarling at the dark shape looming over you and watched as it reacted quickly to the attacking hound and the stun blast took Batcher out before she had the chance to inflict any damage.
To say you reacted sluggishly would be an understatement. You could barely will your body to move out of the way of the threat. Your eyes finally quickly adjusted, you realised it was a male twilek and he was currently sticking a need filled with a clear liquid into your thigh.
You finally slapped his hand away but not before the needle pierced your skin.
You shot to your feet, stumbling slightly as you recovered from the head rush that hit you as a result.
You immediately felt faint.
A fresh wave of intense pain tore its way through your body and the nausea and overall weakness that overwhelmed you was scarily familiar.
It was then you realised what heâd just infected you with was in fact the source your sickness. But what you couldnât understand was how it didnât show up on any of the scans and tests youâd undertaken. Even though at the time youâd thought it rather unnecessary, you had been checked multiple times for poisons in your blood, yet this got missed and that was deeply concerning in its own right.
The other concern was, judging by how feeble and breathless you became, this was finally the one that your body couldnât fight against, and you didnât know how much longer you could hold out. If you could just get to your commâŚ
âYouâve got a very protective group. I thought theyâd never leave. Thank you for finally sending them away.â The twilek said, utterly unphased by being discovered. He stalked around the couch and placed himself between you and the front door. Â
âHow did you get-â You then remembered the open window in your bedroom.
âItâs funny how little people care about the security of their homes and personal effects here. You were basically inviting all of this.â He twirled his blaster with arrogant nonchalance. He saw the way you were clutching your side like you could brace yourself against the pain coursing through your veins and your knees buckled but you caught yourself against the coffee table the move seeing the cup of water fall to the ground, cracking with the impact. âNow, let me see, Iâve been hearing enough about how this poison works to remember some of the effects. Let me guessâŚâ He tapped the tip of his blaster against his chin as he listed them off as you pitifully worked on getting to your feet, âConstant nausea, insomnia, fever, dizzy spells and extreme bodily pain. None of which standard medical can defeat. Iâm sure I missed some but those are definitely the highlights. Does that sound about right?â  He taunted.
You forced yourself to stand tall. Your eyes darted to your comm link on the kitchen counter.
âI wouldnâtâŚâ The twilek warned in irritation as he stalked towards you.
You didnât listen. You channelled whatever energy you had left and landed kick to his stomach- the action causing you more pain than it did him- and made a dash towards it.
Just as you grabbed it, you felt a brutally take hold of the back of your neck and smack your head against the edge of the counter. Blood poured from the fresh cut on your forehead, and you collapsed to the floor with a pained cry and cups and plates came smashing to the ground around you.
You shook away the black spots encroaching on your vision and attempted to crawl along the floor to your discarded comm device, sharp pieces of debris cutting into your palms, your body screaming in agony with the effort.
âI gotta give you credit.â He picked at his cuticles. âYou lasted longer than I thought you would but Iâm sick of this place so if you donât mind, Iâm going to speed this along.â
You felt a knee on your back and the butt of a blaster smack against your temple, turning your world black.
--
âDid you have to beat her like that? The poison has clearly been working. One stun blast and sheâd be done.â The rodian chastised as he saw the twilek unceremoniously dump your freshly bruised body on the floor of the ship. He swivelled in the pilotâs chair and turned the ship on.
âThe bitch still put up a fight. Besides, you had your fun with your little concoction. I needed mine. Now, hold on, weâre not leaving just yet.â
âWhy the hell not?â
âGive me two minutes.â With that, the twilek took off the engagement ring and departed the ship.
âYou didnât use that final vial, did you?â The rodian called after him but he got no answer.
--
The following morning
Hunter roused from his restless slumber. It had been a mildly better night but not one heâd be looking to repeat.
He tidied his section of the floor heâd been given- it was a tight squeeze with all six of them here- and put away his sleep mat and spoke to his family who were all gathered in the kitchen, nursing cups of caf. âIâm heading back to check on her.â
âWeâll join you momentarily.â Tech said, his sights fixed firmly on his datapad.
Hunter nodded but as he opened the door, his blood ran cold as he saw what was on the doorstep. He kneeled down to pick it up and a new type of panic sat heavy in his chest.
âHunter?â Echo had been the one to call over, but theyâd all noticed the change in his posture.
Hunterâs head snapped in the direction of the sound of frantic, worried barks and he saw Batcher come sprinting around the corner. He started running, the rest of his squad following close behind.
--
The front room set the scene for Hunter in brief yet terrifying detail.
The floor was a mess of broken glass and smears of blood.
Your comm lay abandoned on the ground.
And you were nowhere to be found.
Hunter couldnât breathe, he couldnât best the tightening in his chest and the fear taking root in his heart. All he could hear was a high-pitched droning in his ears and it took everything in him not to succumb to the terror he was experiencing as he realised you had been taken from him. Again. Â
Around him, his brothers already started analysing the scene.
âThe Empire-â Wrecker began to ask.
âRex and I have been monitoring them and they have no idea where any of you are. This isnât them.â Echo disagreed.
âItâs not their style either.â Crosshair stated.
âIt is highly possible that a bounty hunter infiltrated this place in. Technically, I believe the price on her head would still stand.â Tech theorised.
âBut who would know where we are?â Omega asked him.
âIt would be best to consider past interactions and any new people you came across post Eriadu as well as those we already know who can tie us here. Now, naturally that should include Phee and Lyra. They may have accidentally-â
âTech, no one on this island would ever give her or any of you up.â Echo argued.
Frustrations between all of them started to rise. They were going in circles and they knew your condition only made things that much more urgent.
âIâm very well aware of that fact but the truth is we need to think practically here. Someone knows where we are, and that knowledge has been used against us. Someone with enough skills to what I assume is poison her enough to take her out, and to elude all of us and take advantage of the very foundations of this place. Surely, there is someone that fits that profile.â
âThere are too many.â Crosshair countered.
âThereâs not way of knowing for sure.â Wrecker agreed with Crosshair. âAnd she needs us now.â
âWell, we need to start somewhere.â Tech said logically though he had to make an active effort to keep his own anxieties in check.
Meanwhile, Hunter carefully held your engagement ring and remembered the happiness and hope it was supposed to represent. How was that a little over a month ago, there had been so much excitement and joy in his life, and it had been so quickly overturned by pain and suffering. This was supposed to be a new life, a new beginning. You were supposed to be safe here, the threat of Hemlock and the Empire was over. Yet somehow, the past had come back to inflict more damage. Who could possibly have anything to gain from claiming that bounty? Who did they know that was that heartless, that calculated but would use a method so cowardly. And most importantly, knew they were here. Who couldâve- Hunter snapped out of it and pocketed your ring. He interrupted the steady stream of voices, âItâs Cid.â
All of them looked at him in bewilderment as he said that name.
âThe Trandoshan from Ord Mantell?â Crosshair double checked since heâd never actually met her, he only knew the name through stories, but he knew that her name had nothing positive to go with it.
Hunter nodded.
âHow do you know?â Wrecker asked.
âBecause everyone else wouldnât do this.â
âBut wouldnât we be aware of her presence here?â Tech pointed out.
âLyra wouldnât sell us out and neither would Phee. But thereâs another link between us and Phee, and thatâs Cid. Youâre talking about bounty hunters, and we know she doesnât do her own dirty work. It was her who told, same way she was the one that told the Empire we were here, and now sheâs doing it again.â Hunter said, his voice eerily calm. âTech, how much of the party did you record?â
âAll of it.â Tech responded and, already anticipating Hunterâs next question, he pulled up the footage.
All of the gathered round as Tech brought up the recording of the party, increasing the playback speed as the evening unfolded.
Hunter, swallowing harshly as he made himself ignore all the tender moments with you that made that evening feel so perfect, anxiously scanned the flashing scenes in front of his eyes, looking for that first instance where you got infected and where this plan all started. âThere!â
Tech paused the video feed.
âDammit.â Hunter clenched his hands into fists. How had he missed that? How had he let you down that badly? âDammit.â He hissed again under his breath before he departed and made for Shepâs.
âWhat did we miss?â Echo asked as the rest of them as they all stared at the frozen image of the rodian with the drink.
There was silence for a few minutes as they all peered at the screen.
Tech inhaled sharply as he next spotted the subtle difference. âThe white powderâŚâ
They all ran after their brother.
--
Shep heard an insistent pounding on his door and opened it to see Hunter standing there, breathing hard and there was a panic behind his eyes that he couldnât hide and to Shep, that only meant one thing. âIs she-â
Hunter wasnât even going to let him finish that thought. âThe rodian from the engagement party. Who is he?â He questioned sharply.
âThe rodian?â Shep repeated in confusion. This was the last thing he expected to hear.
âThe rodian at the party.â Hunter repeated hurriedly. âHe gave us our drink once we got back from the beach. He had yellow skin, quiet demeanour. He was new to the island; I didnât recognise him.â
Shep recovered quickly. âYes, yes.â He recalled the one Hunter was referring to. âHe arrived with a twilek. They were quiet, mostly kept to themselves.â
âWere?â Hunter repeated and he felt his squad approach from behind.
Shep pointed down the road, âI checked on the temporary housing we provided them to see how they were feeling about the move, but they are no longer there. What does this-â Shep was only met with the sights on all of them racing for that house.
--
Hunter took in the front room. From the clothes left behind and the general disarray in the living space, it was obvious that theyâd left in a hurry. He then noticed a puck for long range communications had also been forgotten about and that was the first time he felt a flicker of hope. âTech.â
âIâm on it.â Tech confirmed as he began working on hacking into the system to trace where the communications went.
Hunter and the others continued to search the house and that was when Hunter spotted an old wanted poster of you nailed to the wall with a knife through your face. Hunter tore it down and curled one into a tight ball in a flash of rage before he composed himself continued searching the area for any sign of where theyâd gone.
âHunter.â Omega called over as she opened a cabinet just above the sink.
Hunter walked over to where the young girl was and took in what she had found.
There was a vast array of discarded and empty vials inside the cupboard which were accompanied by a series of instructions for powder ingestion or liquid injection. Underneath the untidy scrawl, was also a list of symptoms that would accompany each dosage but what caused the fear he was working on supressing to spike was that it seemed to be that their plan had consisted of giving you the second-most lethal one.
But there was no name of the mixture, no list of ingredients to go off of or any signs of a cure. It only served to confirm that what you had been experiencing was a cruel, carefully maintained poisoning.
âIâve got the location.â Tech announced as he brought up the coordinates to Asusto.
Hunter memorised the number and he knew heâd be able to track you once he landed. Next, he barked out orders like heâd done for most of his life. âTech, you start getting what you can from these instructions. You thought it was a poison before, do what you can to narrow the list down. Omega, you help him. Iâll confirm what they did once I find them and get the antidote. The rest of you, help Dalia get ready for our return.â With that order, he turned on his heels and ran for home.
--
He entered the bedroom and started preparations to leave all the while doing his best to not let each reminder of you in here to distract him. You needed him focused, not frantic with worry. He reached under the bed and pulled out the case of depleted armour that heâd never thought heâd have to put on again. It wasnât even a complete set anymore, and it was still scratched and worn down, but it had to do. He grabbed his blaster and vibroblade and got ready to leave.
As he left, he saw that Wrecker, Echo and Crosshair had returned and were all stood there, blasters in hand and in whatever armour theyâd had post Tantiss. âNo.â He said immediately.
âDalia can handle setting up herself. Youâre not doing this alone. You need us as backup.â Echo reasoned.
âI canât ask that of you.â Hunter said with a firm shake of his head. This was supposed to be behind them, he wouldnât inflict this another fight on them.
âYouâre not asking, and neither are we. Weâre going with you.â Crosshair said definitively.
âYeah, you mess with one of us, you get all of us!â Wrecker said in agreement.
âI already told Rex and he ordered me to stay here. Youâre not doing this alone.â Echo added. âMy ship is ready whenever you are.â
Hunter dipped his head in thanks before he led the way out.
--
Your head was pounding.
The cuts on your palms stung.
Everything around you sounded fuzzy- it almost sounded like you were underwater- and from what your semi-conscious self could tell, you appeared to be in some sort of basement. You werenât cuffed or chained but that was probably because your captors realised you were hardly able to keep your eyes open, let alone plan an attack to get out of here. You could make out their blurry shapes just ahead of you, and you strained to hear why the rodian was in such a state. As you did so, you felt something wet dripping down your face, and you guess the damp basement had a leak somewhere.
âShitshitshit, this is why I told you not to give her that last dosage!â The rodian cried in a frantic panic.
You felt a coarse fabric scrape under your nose, and you saw the crimson stain of blood as it was pulled away⌠so, clearly, it wasnât a leaky roof. You had no doubt that signified the end for you- it was now only a matter of when- but your current disjointed thought process had you worrying more about the fact that the comforting presence of the ring on your left hand was no longer there.
âYou wanted her to be an easy grab, I made sure of it.â
âI donât have an antidote prepared!
âSo, make one.â The twilek said with no concern whatsoever.
âWith what ingredients? This was never the plan!â
âSheâll be dead before we even leave this room and if the boss doesnât kill us, the client sure as fuck will!â
âShe was as good as dead anyway; I only sped it along.â
âYou-â
âHow long?â You croaked, interrupting their argument.
The twilek ignored you but the rodian, wringing his hands anxiously, said, âAbout two hours.â
âAh.â You said plainly. âGuess you mistimed that one huh?â You winced as you curled into the fetal position as if it could ease the agony coursing through every fibre in your body.
âJust keep your mouth shut.â The twilek ordered as the both of you as they waited for their boss to show up.
--
You had been in and out of consciousness but came around to the sound of the rodian babbling to himself about how everything had gone to shit, and they were seconds away from getting killed. You clued in to the sounds of a door opening and footsteps descending to the basement.
You feebly raised your head and you saw the face you wished youâd never see again. âYou bitch. You fucking bitch.â You seethed weakly. The last bouts of your cognitive abilities put it together: Ord Mantell, the Empire on Pabu and now these bounty hunters being able to find you⌠it all fell into place. âBetraying us twice wasnât enough for you?â
Cid didnât let your words bother her. âMoney is money and youâre worth a lot of money.â
You attempted to sit up but the best you could manage was propping yourself up on your forearms. âI hate to break it to you, but the person in the Empire who wanted me is very much dead.â
âWho said it was the Empire?â Cid said coolly.
A new type of panic set in but you were distracted by the warm, wet liquid sliding down your face and on to your lips, the iron tang of it burning your tongue.
Cid then noticed the blood steadily dripping from your nostrils. She whirled on the two goons sheâd hired. âThatâs not supposed to appear until the last stage, how much did you give her?!â
The rodian just glanced to the twilek.
The twilek shrugged. âLook, boss, you told us to use the poison however we saw fit. She needed a hell of a lot more of it in her system, why do you think we took so long?â
âSheâs no good to me or the client if sheâs dead!â Cid said angrily. âHow long has she got?â
A beat of silence.
âAbout an hour.â The rodian informed her nervously.
Cid cursed under her breath. âWe donât meet the client until midnight!â
âJust push the meeting to now. Get her to the client alive and take the cash and get outta there.â The twilek suggested calmly.
âTheyâd know something was up. And weâd never get away with it with how she looks like now!â
âYou try what they gave me and see how good you look at the end of it.â You muttered in offence, a new type of delirium taking hold of you.
Cid paid you no attention. âWhat about the antidote?â She asked the rodian sharply. âThis is your poison; you must know how to counter it?â
âAw Cid, I knew you still cared.â You said hoarsely, and everything around you started to move in and out of focus, each haggard breath leaving you acted like a sick form of countdown.
âThe ingredients donât exist here, and I never brought them. It wasnât supposed to get to this point.â The rodian admitted.
Cid tossed her hands in the air, her own nerves steadily rising. âYou idiots! This deal was for a fit Jedi slave, and youâve given me someone that isnât going to last the next hour! How-â Her tirade was cut short by the sound of an explosion above them, dust descending from the ceiling with the impact.
âDo you know the great thing about having a family?â You said with a cold laugh. You forced yourself to sit up. You may be fighting a losing battle but one thing you still knew was who the cause of that explosion. Youâd sense them anywhere. âWe look out for one another.â You glowered at the twilek, âThat âprotective bunchâ are about to become your living hell.â
The twilek only glared at you.
âIf theyâve found us, itâs because you left a way for them to track our communications!â Cid said angrily.
âDonât look at me, heâs the one who was responsible for packing up.â The twilek said dismissively, readying his blaster for the fight heâd finally been waiting for.
âWell, he was the one that taunted them with the ring!â The rodian said in a panic as the thudding of footsteps drew closer.
âRing?â Cid repeated, her stomach dropping to her feet in fear. She glanced to your depleted form, and the realisation of just what precisely had developed between you and dark and broody since Ord Mantell cemented her fate. Sheâd royally messed this up.
âYou guys are fucked.â You said dazedly as you slouched against the wall and more blood spilled from your nostrils, staining your hands and the ground below.
The door at the top of the basement stairs crashed open and smoke engulfed the room.
--
Three precise shots fired through the smoke.
Cid raised her arms in instant surrender as the smoke dissipated and she saw the state of her hired bounty hunters. The twilekâs blaster had been shot out his hands and he was bleeding from a shot to just below the abdomen whilst the rodian took a hit to his shoulder. Both of them were now sprawled on the floor. She muttered an uneasy curse as she realised what was in store for her.
The effort of breathing and opening your eyes after each blink got tougher to maintain but you recognised the familiar tender touch under your chin from the man in kneeling in front of you. âHunter.â You said, your voice barely sounding above a whisper. Your eyes flickered open as you took him in.
Hunter wiped away the blood from your face, but it just kept coming, the sight of it heightening his persistent rising panic but he pushed it away. It wouldnât help you if he let you see how ruined with worry, he was. âWeâre getting you out of here, I promise.â He started to lift you to your feet, uttering soft words of comfort and reassurance as you went with him but each rasp and pained whimper from you only fuelled his anger further. âHold on. Just hold on.â He begged you quietly.
âIâve got her, Hunter.â Wrecker offered softly as he came to your side and took over. âHang in there.â He said to you, his gruff voice choking up with emotion as he took your weight and saw the way your face was drained of all life, the blood standing out too brightly against your skin.
Hunter waited until Wrecker was properly supporting you before he turned on the three adversaries. He ignored Cid for the moment, heâd deal with her last. Right now, his priority was getting your cure and for that, he needed the two hunters.
He did a quick scan of the two males, the twilek was gritting his teeth against the pain and his face was a cruel mask of indifference but the rodian was a mewling mess and his heart was pounding so loudly, Hunter had heard it from upstairs which meant that the rodian was his way in.
âTell me what you did to her.â His voice quiet with lethal softness as he stalked towards him. Â
But the rodian said nothing. Â
âFine.â With that, he stabbed the rodian just above the knee and angled to tip of the blade towards his kneecap and pushed. He also clamped his other hand down on the open shoulder wound and paid no attention to the miserable screams that emitted from the rodian.
Crosshair and Wrecker made no move to stop it either. Wrecker kept you propped up while Crosshair kept his rifle trained on the twilek and Echo guarded Cid.
âFuck! Oh fuck, no!â The rodian yelled as he writhed in an attempt to get away from the blade, but each movement only caused the blade to twist further into his joint.
âWhat did you do?â Hunter demanded again through the cries of pain. With both hands, he pressed harder.
The rodian spoke through the pain in a rapid, terrified manner, âIâll tell you everything! I- shit, just donât do that anymore! Itâs called Ghost. I c- created it. We put the powder in her water flask and coated her pain pills in it and spiked her sedatives with the liquid form! It- ow fuck- it canât be picked up on any medical scans and itâs got no taste or smell but itâs fatal when used excessively. Its main use is torture and incapacitation but for that, it needs to be used precisely. Thatâs all we wanted to do with her! I swear! But what I calculated for her didnât work so we upped the dose, but it was too much too quickly. I donât know how sheâs still going.â
Wrecker, Crosshair and Echo had to fight to keep their expressions neutral, but that information shook them all to their core. Theyâd helped this plan along and the thought left them repulsed.
The horror Hunter felt at the fact that theyâd all inadvertently been contributing to your declining health threatened to engulf him. He caught himself easing up on the rodian in the pure gut-wrenching shock of it all, but he gathered himself swiftly. âBut thereâs a cure.â Hunter insisted, angling his blade further towards the knee.
The rodian yelped in agony. âYes, thereâs- ah fuck- thereâs- a- an- an antitode!â
âShut up!â The twilek hissed command earning him a rifle butt to his face. His nose cracked and blood poured down.
âNo way! This shit wasnât what I signed up for!â
Hunter eased up on his pressure slightly to lure him into revealing more.
âHere, take it, take it.â The rodian winced as he reached into his inside vest pocket and took the piece of paper out- it had been the one critical piece of information he had the wits to remember to remove when theyâd left the island- but now he wanted it as far away from him as possible. He felt momentarily relief as the man removed his vice-like grip on his shoulder but that was swiftly replaced by fear as he saw a blaster pointed at his face. âNo, please donât! I promise I wonât tell-â
Hunter killed the rodian with a shot to the forehead. âGet that to information to Tech.â He ordered Echo sharply who took the paper with a nod and swiftly left the room.
Hunter fired two shots into Cidâs knees as she attempted to slip away once Echo departed.
Cid crashed to the ground, hissing in pain.
Your slumped form addressed the other hunter who was still alive. âYou two were slipping poison into my system for 3 weeks⌠didnât you have anything better to do with your lives?â
âIt worked, didnât it?â
You, still delirious, mimed applause. âYup, it did. Extra points for you. Although youâre 30 seconds away from death and I still have a good hour so whoâs the real winner here?â
The twilek saw the tattooed solider stalking darkly towards him. He wasnât going to die begging for his life like his rodian counterpart, heâd done something others could only dream of. âAnd youâre more than three hours away from Pabu. We beat you, youâre as good as-â
Hunter silenced his words with a single shot of his blaster.
You felt your legs completely give out with the effort it took to remain vertical.
Wrecker, unfortunately had to ignore your moans of since he was left with no choice but to strengthen the grip that he had on you. He didnât even need to have Hunterâs enhanced senses to see how grave your situation was now. He could barely feel your breaths leaving your body and each time he wiped away the blood, more continued to pour down.
Hunter heard your weak cries of protest, and he turned his attention to the pathetic excuse of an individual crawling on her front away from him, blood streaking the floor from the wounds in her knees. No matter how much he wanted to make this hurt, you were the priority here. He caught up with her is a couple steps, stamped down on her back before he roughly turned her around and replaced his foot harshly on her chest.
Cid couldnât run. She couldnât fight. But she knew fine well what was in store for her. âLook, bandana, it was just a bad business deal, okay? I didnât know they were doing to use so much. Youâve got the antidote, just take it and get her the help she needs.â She said tightly through the pain.
Her words filled him with pure disgust, and he couldnât stand to hear them anymore. With her out of the picture, it would finally all be over. The constant threat of her wouldnât plague them anymore.
âYou betrayed us three times. You donât get a fourth.â Hunter said, his voice steely with quiet and controlled rage.
âIt wasnât personal, it was a business deal. Iâm sure-â
Hunter cut her off with a shot to her face. He holstered his blaster.
âMove out.â He directed as he came to your opposite side and aided Wrecker in keeping you upright so you wouldnât choke on the blood gushing from your nose.
--
Wrecker passed you fully off to Hunter as you all entered the ship, and he joined his two other brothers in the cockpit.
Hunter laid you down carefully on the cot, angling your head so you wouldnât gag on the blood continuing to flow from your nose. He held one cloth over your nose in what he knew was a futile attempt to stem the blood flow before he also grabbed a cold cloth and dabbed at your forehead. Your skin was on fire, your clothes soaked through with sweat and even blinking seemed to be a monumental effort for you. âHold on. Itâs just a little bit longer, okay?â Hunter told you, his voice quivering as he helplessly watched you. It seemed like even breathing was a burden for you now.
You couldnât even nod. Another shallow breath shuddered through you.
--
Echo had gotten the ship into hyperspace and Tech back on comms. âTech, weâre heading back. Did you get anything more on the poison?â
âUnfortunately, not more than what youâve already told me given that it was not on any official record. But I read through what we uncovered in the home. One thing to be thankful for is that, if the instructions weâd already found are accurate, thereâs still time. The final stage involved bleeding from bodily orifices. If-â
âSheâs bleeding from her nose.â Crosshair interrupted.
Techâs eyes flashed with alarm. âWhen did that start?â He asked, his voice grave.
âCanât be certain but she was bleeding before we got there.â Echo told him, his own nerves rising as he saw Techâs expression.
âTech?â Wrecker prompted; he hated the prolonged silence as Tech glanced at his datapad. âWhat does that mean for her?â
âOmega and I have gathered most of what is needed for the antidote here, but weâre taking Pheeâs ship to go to the neighbouring planet to get the final plants required.â Tech said instead.
âThatâs not an answer.â Crosshair said, his voice tense.
âThe answer wouldnât do any of you any good. Just get her to Dalia the second you land. Iâll be there as soon as I can.â
As he disappeared. Echo, Wrecker and Crosshair looked down the hallway to where Hunter was crouched by your side.
âWe canât have been too late, we canât have been.â Wrecker fretted.
âSheâs survived this long. She can do it.â Echo said but it was more to convince himself than anyone else.
âI donât know how much she has left to give.â Crosshair said, his own worries seeping through as he watched your chest barely rise.
You were already living for longer than you were supposed to but none of them knew how much more of that you could sustain.
--
Hunter had heard the words from the cockpit, but he refused to let them resonate. âIâve got it.â He said gently as he saw you attempting to take the rapidly growing blood-stained fabric off your face. He removed it, threw it away and made to grab a new one but your gravelly voice stopped him.
âH-Hu-Hunter.â
âDonât- donât try to talk.â Hunter advised, swallowing thickly. âSave your energy.â
You didnât listen and just about managed to make your eyes focus on him. âI- I hav- have to tell you-â You gasped through pained breaths.
âTell me when youâre better.â Hunter instructed, hoping he sounded like himself even as he felt his own distress rise in his chest, in his throat. He couldnât stand this, but he needed to stay strong for you.
âIâm not-â You broke off with a sharp, hurt whimper. âI- Iâm not getting better.â You could feel your body giving up with every ineffective, weighed down breath.
âYes. You are.â Hunter took your hand and pressed your fingers to his lips.
âI-I want you- t-to-know that- that I love you.â
âStop-â Hunter his voice growing hoarser and more wrecked with emotion with every passing second.
âI- I want you-you to move on- I want you to-to live.â
Hunter stroked hair back from your burning brow. âI canât do that without you.â He whispered but he could from the distant look in your eyes tell that his words werenât landing as the fever had ultimately taken its deadly grip.
âI- I wouldâve married you.â
âYou still will.â Hunter said as firmly as he could manage but it required pushing away more doubt than he cared to admit.
âIâŚâ But you trailed off as you finally welcomed what you had been resisting for so long.
âKeep your eyes open. Please.â Hunter pleaded, his voice breaking as he saw you take one deep, crackling breath as you slowly blinked.
You wanted to. You wanted to so badly, but you felt like the end would be the only thing to give you any semblance of relief. Your eyes flickered shut and darkness took over.
Hunter hung his head and held your hand tightly, and he could only watch your signs of life slowly fade away. âStay with me.â He begged your unconscious form through a strangled breath as he hoped some part of you would register his words.
Your pulse was thready at best, your breathing ragged and shallow.
Your entire body was shutting down and there was nothing Hunter could do to stop it.
--
Thanks to Techâs efforts, Daliaâs home had extended and doubled into a well-functioning medical centre with enough beds and equipment to cope with whatever came her or the islandâs way. It had felt a bit excessive, but it was better to be safe than sorry, and today, that was good thing.
âPut her here!â Dalia ordered as Echo slammed open the door for Hunter and Wrecker to hurry through, your body hanging weightlessly between their arms. âAZ, prep her and check her vitals.â
âWhereâs Tech?â Hunter asked urgently as he placed you on the hospital bed.
âI donât know. He shouldâve been back by now.â Dalia said as she got a cooling blanket for you as AZ worked on stopping the bleeding before she gathered up the part of the cure that was already made up. Sheâd barely finished her sentence when Tech came sprinting through the door.
Tech stopped short when he saw the perilous state you were in but recovered quickly. He handed the final components over before he made to depart but stopped as he realised that his brother was making no move to do so.
âHunter-â Tech tried to reach and take a hold of his arm, but Hunter shook him off.
Wrecker made to do the same but got the same result. Â
âHunter, you need to leave.â Dalia insisted as she busied about prepping the antidote whilst AZ continued doing what he could to stabilise you.
âI canât.â He croaked; his voice barely audible as he stared at your practically lifeless body. He needed to know that youâd be okay, he couldnât leave you like this.
âIf you want her to live, you need to let me work and I canât do that with you here.â Dalia said bluntly. She cared for all of them and hated seeing this happen but there wasnât time to be gentle, you were barely hanging on and your health outweighed politeness.
Tech nodded to Wrecker to leave first before he turned his attention to his unmoving older brother. Tech understood Hunterâs reluctance and he too found himself not wanting to leave until he knew you were at least stable, but he was just about clear-headed enough to realise their presence was a hindrance. âCome on, Hunter.â Tech tried again and this time, Hunter let him take a hold of his upper arm to guide him out.
Hunter could barely move his feet- Tech was doing most of the work for him. He saw the concerned faces of his squad staring past him into the room but as he turned around to get one last look at you, the door shut.
The door shut on him but not before he heard it.
He heard the sound that was going to haunt him for the rest of his days. The low drone of the machine chilled his body to the bone and his knees collapsed out from under him. If it wasnât for Wreckerâs firm grip on his shoulders, he wouldâve just crumpled to the floor. Â
Hunter wasnât a medical expert, but he knew what a flatline sounded like.
--
What was complete devastation was soon replaced by raw, unbridled desperation. It swallowed him whole as he thrashed against Wreckerâs grip on him in his fight to re-enter that door.
âHunter, stop, stop.â Omega managed to dart in front of him and take a hold of his hands. âYouâve done all you can. Fighting wonât help her or you.â She did her best to soothe him or at least get him to stop struggling against Wreckerâs hold.
The best Hunter could do was let her words and touch stop his insistence to get back to you, but he was practically hyperventilating. Cid had put them through a lot, but this had affected him in a different, more visceral way. The cruelty of everything sheâd planned out and attempted to execute cut him to his core. âI did this.â He said in quiet horror and that admission opened the dam.
Once Hunter eased up, Wrecker released his hold, but he remained close by just in case. âThis wasnât your fault.â
Hunter lost all emotional control. âI should have stopped this!â
Theyâd all been anticipating this and knew Hunter needed them now. Heâd kept it together for as long as he physically could but what they felt when they heard that flatline, he would be feeling ten times over.
âNo, you couldnât have. None of us knew what this was.â Tech reminded him.
Hunterâs panic and anger were leaving him unrestrained now. He couldnât stop. âI watched her drink from that glass the night of the party, and I didnât notice! I just watched it happen and did nothing! What good am I if my mutation canât even protect the people around me!â
âIt was impossible to trace. There was a reason your enhanced senses couldnât detect this; it was inherently designed against them.â Tech emphasised.
He couldnât handle the logic right now. It didnât matter. All he knew was what had happened to get you here and whatâd heâd failed to protect you from. âI was killing her, Tech! Every day I gave her that damn flask, forced her to take those injections and painkillers, I was killing her!â
âNo. The poison was.â Echo interjected.
âWhich I was only helping along! Cid might as well have hired me for the fucking job! She kept telling me that she didnât want them but took them because she was doing it for me!â
âHunter, you didnât know.â Omega tried again but the clone only shook his head in harsh self-deprecating dismissal of her words.
âI should have! I-â
âAnd if youâre going to blame yourself for doing what you naturally thought was the only way to help her, then blame all of us because every single one of us did that.â Crosshair said bluntly but he was only speaking as frankly as he was because he knew his brother would never assign that blame to them and he needed Hunter to hear how ridiculous and pointless it was to put something like this on himself.
That felt like a punch to the gut, and it took the remaining fight out of him. But he welcomed it. The last thing heâd do would be and he could hear your voice in his head telling him to see the bigger picture here. âI know youâd never-â He broke off and tried again. âThat wasnât what I meant. I know it wasnât your fault.â
âAnd itâs not yours.â Wrecker echoed again as he moved to now rest a solid, calming hand on his brotherâs shoulder like heâd done in the months post the disaster of Ord Mantell.
Hunter took a deep, grounding breath, before he nodded to Wrecker to indicate that he wasnât going to do anything foolish. He stayed standing whilst his family sat in the waiting area chairs.
Now, all they could do was wait.
--
Hunter was on step 864 when he ceased his nervous pacing a half second before the door finally opened.
The others all got out of their chairs once they âHow is her condition?â Tech questioned the healer.
Dalia inhaled deeply. âSheâs alive.â
Hunter couldnât help but think there was a silent âfor nowâ that was in amongst Daliaâs tone. Heâd been all too aware of what was happening behind that closed door. The announcement hardly brought him solace. There was only a slight easing to his churning stomach and frantic heartbeat as he waited for her to get to the crux of what she had to say.
âCan we see her?â Wrecker inquired.
Dalia hesitated before replying, âI would wait.â
âWhy?â Crosshair asked warily.
âShe flatlined three times but we got her back. However, sheâs not awake yet.â
Hunter choked on a breath as she confirmed what he feared heâd heard again throughout the day.
âNot awake?â Echo repeated. Â
âBut she will wake up, right?â Omega asked anxiously. âYou gave her the cure, so sheâll be okay, wonât she?â
Dalia slowly elaborated on what she meant, âItâs possible that with the toil the poison took on her and with the amount of strain on her body... well, I just donât know if sheâll wake up. AZ and I going to monitor her for changes, but Iâd suggest going home until you hear from me.â
âThatâs not happening.â Hunter rasped, but there was no mistaking the intensity behind his words.
âHunter-â Dalia started.
âWeâre staying here.â Crosshair said, backing up Hunterâs statement with his brothers nodding their agreement too.
âI donât know how long itâll be before we know anything more.â Dalia said truthfully.
âWeâll wait.â Tech said firmly.
Seeing that she wasnât going to change their minds, and she didnât really expect to anyway, Dalia bowed her head. âVery well.â She said before she walked back into the room.
--
The hours ticked by painfully slowly.
Then the hours turned into the next day.
And the next.
Shep, Lyra and Phee had periodically come by both to check in and to bring food and blankets since it was obvious that none of them would leave until they knew your fate.
âAny updates, brown eyes?â Phee asked, laying a caring hand on Techâs shoulder.
Tech rested his hand on top of hers. âItâs still touch and go.â
âAnd howâs he?â Lyra inquired with a nod in Hunterâs direction but all she got were a series of uneasy looks.
âAs far as weâre aware, he hasnât slept or eaten.â Echo said worriedly.
âNothing? Can I bring something else? He should eat something.â Shep offered.
âWeâve tried. He wonât take anything.â Wrecker replied, voice rough with tiredness and emotion.
âIâve got it.â Omega said as she came over and took two of the prepackaged meals.
--
âI brought you some food.â Omega said delicately as she approached Hunter who looked utterly exhausted.
âIâm not hungry.â Hunter said gruffly.
âEat.â Omega ordered more insistently this time.
âOmegaâŚâ Hunter just shook his head.
âSheâs going to make it. And youâll need your strength to see her once sheâs up. You know itâs true. So, eat.â She instructed again.
Hunter took the plate with a tired sigh and allowed the young girl to rest her head against his shoulder as the two of them ate and sat in the closest thing to relaxed silence heâd experienced since coming back.
--
Nightfall had arrived on the third day and there was still no word.
The others had all been in and out of restless naps as they waited.
The only thing keeping Hunter mildly calm was the young girl whose head was currently resting in his lap as she slept. Her soft, regular sleepy sighs allowed him some form of meditative relief as he sat there waiting for news. He adjusted the blanket as it slipped down her shoulders.
Another 15 minutes passed before Hunter heard signs of life making for the door. And his head snapped up as Dalia and AZ walked into the waiting area.
The rest of them instantly got to their feet.
Hunter gently roused Omega from his lap as they both stood, and he could hear his own anxious heartbeat in his ears.
Until now, AZ had been the one to give them sporadic updates. If Dalia was out here, that only meant one of two thingsâŚ
âSheâs awake.â Dalia said through a weary but delighted sigh.
Hunter braced his elbows against his knees. He covered his face with his hands and inhaled and exhaled shakily as he resisted the urge to release a relieved sob.
There was a collective breath realised as they all heard her say those words.
âThank you, Dalia.â Hunter just about managed to say as the crushing weight of his stress and worries lifted from his shoulders, and he felt strangely disconnected from every other sensation in his body as he fully comprehended that you were safe⌠that you were alive.
âSheâs asking for you.â Dalia said, squeezing his shoulder.
As Hunter steadily walked towards the door, some part of him felt like maybe this was all a cruel dream and heâd wake up back in that waiting area to find that you were gone. That thought soon vanished as he saw you gingerly sitting up in the hospital bed.
--
âHey.â You said with a real but still weak and tired smile as you saw him standing there. Â
A strangled yet elated noise left his lips as he heard you speak.
âYeah, I know I donât look too hot right now.â You said with faint tracings of humour. But as you fully took him in, you realised that wasnât what you needed to do. Â
He wasnât ready for that yet. Everything to too fresh, too intense for him to let this become something to joke about. He caught sight of you old, bloodstained clothing and all the emotions heâd been suppressing came to a head. âI never shouldâve left you.â
âYou werenât to know.â You said as you realised you didnât need to put on that front you had been prepared to maintain. You allowed your voice to soften, and you relaxed further into the bed as you no longer felt the need to act like you could just jump out of the cot. âBut you got me out and back here in time.â
âNo, I didnât.â Hunter said with self-directed frustration. âYou died.â
Dalia had filled you in on what had happened, but you didnât know the extent to which heâd been around for that but now your own tears threatened to spill from your eyes as you realised what heâd had to go through. You knew how youâd be if youâd been in his position and it was something you could hardly bare to imagine so, for him to have witnessed what he did, it was no wonder you could sense his fear tearing him apart. âHunter-â
âItâs a rare thing for me to feel as helpless as I have these past weeks, especially on that ship departing Asusto. It was a new kind of terror. Iâve always known at least something to do, but I couldnât do anything to help cure you. Taking care of Cid was the last thing I could do for you and for the safety of this family.â He inhaled shakily, âBut then I had to watch the poison destroy you and I couldnât do anything.â Tears were running down his face, but he didnât care. âYou knew you were going to die, you told me as much on the ship. You told me to live, to move on. I heard each flatline. I heard you get ripped away from me time and time again, and I couldnât take it. Each time I thought you wouldnât fight your way back, a part of me died out there and if Dalia had come out there to tell us you were gone, that part of me wouldnât ever come back. Iâd exist but I wouldnât live. Donât ask me to move on because I canât, I love you with all I have. Youâre the other half of me and if you are ever taken from me like that again, that half goes with you.â He finished with a breath that was half exhale, half sob.
You wiped away a few of your own tears at his words. âCome here.â You whispered as you reached for him- for your other half- and moved to the other side of the narrow cot. âAnd itâs not going to hurt me.â You added in reassurance since you knew thatâs where his concerns would instantly go.
Hunter swallowed through the lump in his throat and finally moved towards you and shifted into the bed.
You kissed away the salty tears on his cheeks and rested his head on your chest. You felt a little pressure at the action, but it was nothing you couldnât handle. âHear that? Iâm still here.â
Hunter closed his eyes as he listened to the thudding that emitted from your chest. It still wasnât as strong as it usually was, but it was there, and it was steady and thatâs what mattered.
You delicately stroked your hands through his hair as you rested there. You focused on his warmth, his weight on your chest, and youâd never felt more content. You felt your spark coming back with each breath and so long as he was still with you, everything else now would fall into place.
--
Upon hearing rising voices and footsteps, Hunter had just sat back down in the chair by your bedside, when Dalia re-entered with AZ whirring behind her.
âWhat the status?â You asked the healer as you also heard the faint sounds of protests behind the shut door.
âWith you or the insistent group outside?â
You chuckled quietly, âWhy donât we start with me?â
âI want you to stay here for at least a week. We need to get you rehydrated and start reintroducing food into your system and I want to give you one more dose of the antidote to make sure all the poison is out of your body. Does that sound acceptable? Bearing in mind that I know how you are, but I will really only take one answer.â
You laughed at that, âYes, that sounds good, Doc.â
âNow, there is a rather eager group of people out there and I donât know how much longer theyâre prepared to listen to me telling them not yet. Can-â She got cut off by the door opening.
âThe answer was not very.â Echo said apologetically as they all entered.
âOh, for goodness sakeâŚâ Dalia muttered.
âFive minutes?â You requested with delicate politeness.
âOkay, fine but I draw the line at the dog.â Dalia said with a roll of her eyes as Batcher went of her hind legs and placed her front paws on the bed by your feet.
Omega whistled and hustled Batcher out of the room before she rejoined her brothers.
âFive minutes.â Dalia reminded you as she and AZ made to give you privacy.
âDalia, I donât even know how to thank you. I-â You began to say as the healer walked away.
âDonât waste your precious time now.â Dalia said but she bowed her head in acknowledgment of your words before she shut the door.
âAnd I also believe I owe you all a rather large thank you.â You said appreciatively.
âDonât mention it.â Echo stated with a smile as he gave you a happy squeeze.
âJust donât scare us like that again.â Wrecker implored as he took his turn.
âTrust me, that will not be something I am looking to re-experience.â You said agreeably.
âI should hope not.â Hunter muttered as he kept a tender yet secure hold of your free hand, his fingers finding a natural place resting on your pulse as a way to ground himself in this moment and remind himself that it was real.
Tech studied the screens next to you and tapped at his datapad. âYour condition has stabilised considerably. I would agree with Daliaâs recommendation for a course of-â
âHey, no staring at my vitals or talking about my health until you give me hug.â You just about managed to hold your arm open expectantly but it was a rather pitiful attempt since you were still feeling pretty weak, but the resultant pathetic appearance probably aided your request.
âVery well.â Tech said through a sigh, but his brief embrace was heartfelt and warm.
âYou know, if you wanted out of the engagement, there are easier ways to go about it.â Crosshair quipped as he came in last, but the relief was evident in his face.
âHa ha.â You drawled sarcastically as you accepted his hug too.
âHow are you feeling?â Omega asked and she placed her arms around you.
âExhausted and still a little sore but alive which seems to be a bit of a surprise.â You said lightly.
âA bit?â Echo repeated with a shake of his head.
âKeeping you on your toes, Echo. Thatâs me.â You kidded.
There was a combined reaction of eyerolls and heads shaking in disbelief.
âAnd hey, we gotta find the silver-linings of this whole thing eventually. If you guys hadnât left me that night, I wouldnât have gotten the antidote. Weâd never have figured it out.â You reminded them, absentmindedly stroking your thumb along the back of Hunterâs hand.
âI knew you were going to say that.â Hunter murmured, the tracings of a smile in his tone.
At that, you angled yourself to face Hunter once more. âIâm also really hoping you have something of mine?â You asked quietly as they all stood around the bottom of the bed.
Hunter kissed your forehead and finally allowed a proper smile as he reached into his pocket and pulled out the ring. âDo you want the speech again? Cause I have a few amendments.â
âTell me tomorrow.â You said with a loving grin in his direction.
Hunter gently took your left-hand in his. âYou know this is forever, right?â He murmured.
âI do.â You breathed in joyous relief as the ring slid back onto your finger.
Hunter pressed his forehead against yours in and nuzzled into the side of your face as he kissed your cheek.
All of you silently absorbed the moment that finally, finally your new lives could begin.

Be Mine
Falling into bed with the handsome Sergeant hadn't been on your bingo card. Then again, falling in love with him certainly hadn't been either.
Pairing: Hunter x f!reader
Rating: 18+ MINORS DNI!
Word count: 1.8k
Warnings: unprotected PiV, a sprinkle of a praise kink, pet names, friends to lovers, a sprinkle of a scent kink, soft aftercare.
It had all happened so quickly.
One moment, youâd been stood at the back of the Marauder with Hunter discussing food rations and when the rest of the Batch would be back from their exploration.
The next, you were face down on a bottom bunk, naked from the waist down, with his rough hands hauling you backwards onto his cock. âThatâs it, cyarâika.â The smokey smoothness of Hunterâs voice cut through the sounds of your whimpers and skin meeting skin. âWanted this for so long. You have no idea.â He grunted, tightening his grip on your hips. Youâd have bruises shaped like his dexterous fingers tomorrow, a delicious reminder of this moment.
Hand flexing against the flimsy sheet, you vaguely registered that it was Echoâs bunk you were face down on. âTell me.â You whined, gasping as a fluid roll of Hunterâs hips made his heavy balls slap against your clit. Â
âCanto Blight.â Hunter gritted out, slowing his thrusts so he could languish in your warmth. He wanted this to last. Needed it to. âThat blasted dress. I wanted to drag you back here, hike up the hem, and have you until dawn.â The memory lived rent-free in his mind. It had been your second mission with them, and the Sergeant had already found himself enamoured with you, so when youâd stepped out the fresher dressed to impress, heâd never been more grateful to be the only one able to hear his racing heart.
âMhmmm. I still have the dress.â You purred, enjoying that heâd lusted after you for so long. Releasing the sheets, you reached a hand down to rub your clit, but Hunter pushed it away. You didnât have time to let out a whine of frustration before he pulled all the way out of you, strong hands moving to grab your thighs so he could flip you over and pick you up, your legs and arms automatically wrapping around him.
âNext time. Oh, Maker, next time.â Hunter promised, capturing your lips in a fiery kiss as he moved you across to his bunk. He needed his sheets to smell like you â he wanted to bury himself in them later that night and bathe in your scent. The damn scent that had been driving him wild since youâd set foot on the Marauder many moons ago at Cidâs behest.
His roughness abated as he slowly settled you down on his bed, making sure you didnât bang your head on the metal frame or hurt your back. It made your heart clench. Finding his eyes in the darkness of the ship, you watched as the fierce hunger from moments before dissipated, and a softness crept over the usually stoic manâs face. âNext time?â You questioned quietly, lifting a hand to run your fingers across his tattooed jawline as he settled above you, caging you in. His weight was comforting â solid and steadfast â but it was hard to miss the firm press of his erection.
âIf you want?â Hunterâs hips started to move, pressing himself against you, eliciting a small mewl from your parted lips as he tried to play it cool. He could get drunk on your sounds, on the feel of your soft skin beneath his calloused fingers, of the warmth in your voice and the sweet ways you showed affection. He noticed every time you stole a glance his way, how you stepped forward to protect him when he was in danger, and that his clothes were always neatly folded on his bunk with a piece of his favourite candy on top after laundry day. Heâd been sceptical when Cid had insisted you go along with them as another set of hands, but he couldnât think of the ship anymore without your presence, your scent, or the sound of your laughter as you tormented his siblings.
âOh, I want.â You agreed, exhaling shakily. The slip and slide of his cock through your folds was delicious but not enough. âHunter. Need more. Need you.â You begged.
The hunger from early roared back into life, igniting Hunterâs blood. Pushing away the softer feelings to focus on later, he focused on your current situation. How he longed to bury his face between your thighs and eat you out, slide his fingers and cock into you, pull orgasm after orgasm from you, and fill you with his release. Spurred on by his thoughts, he wasted no time reaching down to align himself with your entrance, and in one steady push, he settled himself back inside of you, marvelling at the way your mouth opened in a silent gasp at the sensation.
Every nerve in your body was alight. Senses overwhelmed by the man on top of you. While Hunter was average in length, his girth led to the most delicious stretch as your body accommodated him. Feeling him fully sheathed inside of you was heavenly, and in your delight, you clenched around him, watching as his eyes screwed shut while his deep groan filled the air. âKeep doing that, and I wonât last long.â He warned, making you smile. It didnât matter how long he lasted, so long as you both got to experience your highs â you couldnât imagine how overwhelming it must be for him, with his heightened sense of touch, to feel you so thoroughly.
Leaning up to close the small distance, you captured Hunterâs lips in a kiss, your left hand reaching up to caress his face while the other slipped under the top half of his blacks, tracing every strong muscle you found.
Feeling less like he was going to blow his load any second, Hunter surrendered himself to your kiss and picked up the pace, snapping his hips against yours, driving himself into you over and over, relishing the sweet drag of your walls around his cock. Hunter felt light-headed; he could spend an eternity tangled up with you, which both thrilled and terrified him. Though the space was limited in his bunk, he shifted to rest all his weight on one hand, breaking your kiss while maintaining his thrusts. Sliding a hand between you both, he honed in on his target. You wouldnât go without. Heâd make damn sure of it.
Fingers finding purchase on your clit, he spent a moment figuring out what you liked, vision and hearing focused on the myriad of expressions that crossed your features and the sounds slipping from your lips. It only took a few tries before he had you whimpering, his grin of satisfaction blinding, only ceasing as you stretched up to capture his lips in a heated kiss once more.
âFuck, Hunter.â You panted, breaking the kiss as your back arched. He was relentless, sure and steady fingers circling your clit with the perfect amount of pressure, and you drew a low moan from the exquisite man above you as you tightened around him. The familiar tension was starting, seeping through your body and overwhelming you.
Enraptured as he watched you chase your release, Hunter slowed his pace and angled his hips, grinning at the sound of your gasp. The way his name sounded tumbling from your lips was simultaneously heavenly and sinful â either way, he couldnât get enough. âThatâs it, cyare. I want to see you fall apart. Can you be a good girl and do that for me?â He whispered, testing the waters. You always responded well to his praise while out on jobs.
It was all too much. The weight of Hunter above you, the sweet drag of his cock in you as he kept hitting that perfect spot with each thrust, and the sound of his deep voice in your ears. You wanted to please him. Wanted to fall apart at his behest. Wanted to be a good girl. Hands scrambling against the sheets for purchase, you bit down on your lower lip. You were close. So close. The tension in your body was almost unbearable, your pussy clamping down on him, making every push and pull feel even more exquisite. Hunter gave a few quick circles on your clit, and your body tingled, the tension snapping as you cried out. You trembled through the waves of your orgasm, the pleasure overwhelming and all-encompassing.
Pulling in a shaky breath, you meet the hungry gaze of the man above you.
âWhere?â He asked once he was sure you were back with him. He was close. So close. Youâd tightened around him, gripping him like your life depended on it. You could make or break him, and heâd thank you either way.
Releasing the sheets, you grasped at Hunterâs shoulders, giving yourself some leverage as you met his thrusts with each rock of your hips. âInside.â You insisted.
That was it. You would be the death of him. And he would gladly go down with the ship. His lips met yours, and with one final, sharp thrust, he grunted, letting go. Thighs quivering as he crested over the edge, he spilled himself deep inside you.
Neither of you spoke for a second, trying to catch your breath as you came down from your highs. Resting your foreheads together, eyes closed, you relished the closeness, basking in the afterglow. âMeshâlaâŚâ Hunterâs low voice broke the silence as he moved to nuzzle his nose against your neck, inhaling deeply.
Everything stilled as he breathed you in, focusing on the thud of your heart as its pace slowed to your resting rate. It brought him a great deal of comfort in an increasingly shifting galaxy. He hadnât meant for your first time together to be like this, hadnât dared to dream it would ever happen if he were being honest with himself, but he didnât regret a second of it.
âWe shouldâve done that sooner.â You whispered, feeling more in control of your racing heart. Hunterâs warm breath fanned against your neck as he chuckled, the deep rumble stoking the warmth in your heart.
You stayed that way for a while before shifting into a more comfortable position, Hunterâs head resting on your chest. Basking in each otherâs warmth, you relished the quiet moment of peace; the only sounds were your soft breaths and Hunterâs light hums of appreciation as you scritched his scalp, running your fingers through his mop of brown hair.
âBe mine?â Hunter asked suddenly, shifting to prop himself up so he could gaze down at you, committing the sight of you in his bunk, smelling like him and sex, to memory. âI'd...â He pauses, gaze flittered away momentarily. "I'd like there to be an us." The admission made him feel strangely vulnerable. He hadnât meant to be so blunt, but he didnât want to hold back anymore.
This time, you dragged your fingers across the uninked planes of his handsome face. âAs long as youâre mine in return.â Your words had his gaze snapping back to you, hope sparking in his eyes as his lips curled into a smile.

Ruthlessness (Sergeant Hunter x fem!Reader)
"After everything you've done...how will you sleep at night?"
"Next to my wife."
Notes: Feral Hunter, above-average bloodshed and violence. Reader is implied to be a Jedi but it's never explicitly stated, inspired by that line from Epic: The Vengeance Saga.
Hunter tore through the base. He could smell your fear and terror, and he knew you were nearby. He didn't even need Tech's directions.
This is what he was made for.
He hadn't slept since he'd heard you'd been captured, and he wouldn't rest until you were safe in his arms.
He quickly dispatched the two TK Troopers at the door with blaster and knife. Before the first body could hit the floor, he snatched the key card from their belt. He could hear your heartbeat just beyond the door, sluggish and slow, along with one other heartbeat and the deadly hum of an interrogation droid.
The moment the door opened, Hunter found his target, launching his vibroblade at the droid.
The blaster shot took him by surprise. Hunter managed to dodge so that it grazed him just below the ribs, but it burned. Every nerve in his body screamed out in pain, but he had to keep moving forward Hunter dropped to his knee, holding his wound, and looked up at the blaster pointed at his face.
"Doctor Hemlock warned me you'd come after her," the Imperial officer said, his voice low and lethal. He sounded just like Hemlock and Rampart, a controlled calm with a storm seething beneath the surface.
Hunter had no use for control. Not when he saw you hanging limp in the officer's arm like the damsel in distress in some cheap holo novel.
"Let her go, and I might let you live." Hunter growled, pushing himself to his feet.
The blaster followed his every move, and the officer chuckled as if he hadn't just been threatened.
"That's not an option here. She's a traitor, as are you."
Hunter took a step forward, only to stumble against a table littered with surgical tools. The officer kept the blaster trained on him, smart man.
But not smart enough.
"You're a stubborn one, aren't you?" The officer chuckled, "You clones just don't know when to quit."
"Hun'red percent success rate," Hunter bragged through gritted teeth, forcing his legs to support him.
"And vain too," the officer scoffed.
Hunter turned his body just enough that the officer couldn't see him grab the scalpel, still trying to make his way to you. Your heartbeat was growing slower with each passing second. He had to get you out of here.
"And what do you call your Emperor, then? An empire that'll last a thousand years? The Republic's been around longer than that."
"The Republic is gone!" The officer snapped, "That is the difference between the Galactic Empire and your precious Republic!" He jabbed the barrel of his blaster against Hunter's chestplate, sealing his doom.
Hunter moved too fast for anyone but Crosshair to have really noticed. The scalpel met its target in the vein of the officer's wrist, and he dropped the blaster with a scream. Hunter grabbed the wound and twisted it, forcing the officer to drop your body. Hunter only took his eyes off the officer to make sure you were safe, but he recovered quickly. He reached for the blaster with his non-dominant hand, and Hunter kicked it out of reach. The officer went for Hunter's wound, digging his hand into the wound. The air was ripped from Hunter's lungs as he tried to focus his vision. He couldn't let you die here, not as a trophy for some fanatic Imperial sycophant.
He still gripped the scalpel in his hand, and as the officer grinned sadistically Hunter drew it across his face. Blood splattered everywhere, and the officer reeled back with his face in his hands. Hunter didn't let him recover. He stomped his booted foot on the officer's shin, shattering his bones. The officer writhed on the floor as he tried to crawl away, dark blood from his face and wrist staining his gray uniform and slicking the tile floor.
Hunter held his side and adjusted his hold on the scalpel for a firmer grip, standing above the insignificant worm of a sentient that had dared to lay a hand on his Cyare.
"You clones-" the officer spat, coughing on his own blood.
"Scraping by, betraying the glory of the Empire just to live hand to mouth..."
"How how do you live with yourself?
"How do you sleep at night?"
Hunter grabbed onto the officers hair, yanking his head back so that the last thing he ever saw was the clone who would kill him.
"Next to my wife."
He drove the scalpel into the monster's chest, over, and over, and over again, until he heard the silence of its heart.
Hunter heaved a deep breath, tasting the coppery tang of blood at the back of his throat. It took a moment, but Hunter knew it wasn't his own.
A shuddering breath echoed through the room, and Hunter turned to you, crouching in between you and the officer so that you wouldn't have to see him as you woke up.
"Cyare? Cyare, can you hear me?" He called your name, cradling your head in his lap.
You mumbled something unintelligible, eyelids twitching.
"Hun'er?"
"Easy, easy Cyare, you're safe. It's over," He said. He gently pressed his fingers to the spot below your jaw where he could feel your heartbeat. It was delicate, like the flutter of a bird's wing, but it was there all the same. He needed to get you to the ship.
Hunter lifted you into his arms and though you raised your arms to hang onto his neck, they weighed as much as a starcruiser.
"I've got you," He whispered, "You're gonna be alright."
Your knee hit the blaster wound in his side, and he winced.
"You're hurt," You gasped, still drugged but now worried about him.
He shook his head and straightened his shoulders, "Don't worry about me. You're safe now. That's all that matters."

You paced the floor of the shuttle as you kept your gaze fixed on the opened hatch. You, Echo, and Wrecker had already gotten the clones settled, and now you were only waiting on Hunter, Crosshair, and Omegaâassuming all had gone well.
It was a waiting game, and it felt like you were losing.
Until you finally saw the image of the three of them in the distance, with Omega walking in between the two brothers. Hunter and Crosshair were both hunched over as if they were in pain, a sight that instantly brought a fearful chill to your chest as you began to hurry down the ramp to meet them in the middle.
âSunny!â Omega called out your nickname with sweet relief. She ran forward to meet you, and you instantly caught her in your embrace.
You closed your eyes as you cupped the back of her head and let out a relieved exhale. âItâs so good to have you back, sweet angel.â You gained the strength to pull away from her as you held her shoulders and gave her a quick once-over. âAre you okay?â
Omega nodded, gesturing with her head to the two men behind her. âThanks to them.â
You smiled, though your lips instantly straightened in severity again when you took note of Hunter and Crosshairâs weary faces. Your voice lowered as you asked Omega another question. âHow are they?â
Omega grimaced, and that was enough for your worry to spike even more than before. You had already been caught up to speed on Crosshairâs hand by Wrecker, but he had told you that he didnât remember much else. All he mightâve heard was Hunterâs pained screaming, which had already had you seized by the most horrible feeling imaginable.
âSunny,â Crosshair suddenly huffed out, as if it had taken him a great effort just to speak. Omega stepped aside to let you face him, and your heart fell straight into your stomach. Crosshair was nearly keeled over at the weight Hunter was placing on himâhis deadweight. Hunterâs eyes were also fluttering closed in a way that made it seem like he might fall unconscious at any moment.
You recovered from your shock at the sight and took Hunter from Crosshair, wrapping one of his arms around your shoulders and letting your adrenaline take his heavy weight. He let out a half-hearted groan as his free hand gripped his side, and his head fell towards yours. Your voice was a haunted version of its usual self as you spoke. âWhat happened?â
Hunter couldnât speak. Your throat tightened with worry as Crosshair offered an explanation. âHemlock.â He let out a grunt of his own as Omega offered him support. âHe⌠put us under the conditioning.â
Your brow shot up at that. âConditioning?â
Crosshair exhaled and shook his head. âTorture. A shock treatment to encourage conditioning. And for HunterâŚâ He trailed off. He didnât need to say it.
But you did. âHis senses.â
The words barely made a sound as they left your tongue, and you were immediately hit with a rush of concern like never before. It stole your breath for a moment, but you caught yourself with a quick inhale and focused on Hunter. His head was almost fully leaning against yours, the small pieces of hair soaked by the rain still sticking to his forehead. His eyes had almost fully closed.
âStay with me, love,â you murmured, willing all your strength to push the two of you ahead towards the shuttle. âYouâre okay now. Iâm here.â
After a few slow steps, Hunter tried to speak, and the sound sent a sharp jolt of relief to your heart. âSunâŚâ
You stopped for a moment and lifted a hand to his head, sweeping away some of the wet hair from his face. âYeah. Itâs me.â You ran your knuckles over his cheek and smiled at him the best you could.
Hunterâs eyes fluttered again as he tried to keep them open. His own relief still wasnât lost on you. âSheâs okay.â
You looked over his shoulder and saw Omega and Crosshair behind you, as if they were waiting to help you and Hunter if you needed it. You smiled even wider and nodded. âThatâs right. You and Crosshair saved her.â
You began to push onwards again, slowly but surely closing the distance to the open hatch. Hunter had one more thing to say as you did so. âYouâre okay?â
You nodded at him. âYes, Hunter. Iâm just fine.â You tightened your grasp on his arm around your shoulders. âLetâs just focus on you for once. Okay?â
Hunter huffed then groaned, his head resting against yours again as you got him on board. The obvious fight he was putting up gave you hope, but you still felt devastated just by the thought of what heâd gone through. That type of torture would be unbearable for anyone, but for someone with Hunterâs enhanced senses, you couldnât even begin to imagine how painful it was.
The thought alone brought tears to your eyes that you swiftly fought away. Everything was okay, and he would be okay, tooâeven if it was hard to see him in such a state.
As you got the two of you onto the shuttle, you were immediately approached by Echo, who took Hunterâs other arm. âHow is he?â Echo asked you.
âResponsive.â You looked over at Hunter and watched his eyes flutter again.
âThatâs good.â Echo gestured with his head over to where Wrecker was sitting on the floor. âWeâve got Wrecker some med patches, and heâs in pretty good shape.â
âIâm glad to hear that.â Your tone was genuine, despite the way your worried mind was still set on Hunter. âCrosshair seems like heâs doing all right, too.â
âGood.â Echoâs voice revealed his own relief. âI was worried when Wrecker told me about his hand.â
Your heart ached for Crosshair for a moment. âYeah. Looks like they at least sealed it off for him.â
Echo gave you a quick glance, his gaze darting over to Hunter as he did so. âI can help you get him somewhere quiet. I think he needs that.â
You offered Echo an appreciative smile. âI agree.â
It was then that Hunter tried to speak up again. âIâm fine.â
You raised an eyebrow at him. âSure.â Your hand on his arm lowered until his fingers were entwined with your own. âBut you would still love to be somewhere quiet right now, wouldnât you?â
Hunter closed his eyes and nodded, and for a moment, you feared that he had finally fallen under. You studied him until his eyes fluttered again, and you exhaled your fearful breath as Echo continued to lead the two of you up the lift and to a private corridor.
âHere.â Echo helped you set Hunter down, and groaned at the movement. Once he was settled, his hand still in yours, Echo stood back up. âIâll get a medpac for you. Once Iâm sure everyoneâs on board, Iâll be taking us straight to Pabu.â
You couldâve cried at the sheer relief you felt that this nightmare was truly coming to an end, but your concern for Hunterâs current state overpowered it. âThank you, Echo.â
Echo nodded, setting a reassuring hand on your shoulder before he disappeared from the corridor. You took a deep breath for composure as you focused on Hunter, whose eyes were closed once again as his head rested against the interior hull.
You were gentle as you released his hand to instead hold the sides of his face. âHunter.â Your voice was so soft even you nearly missed it, your thumbs brushing under his eyes in another attempt to gain his attention. When he didnât make a move or say a word, you let your concern get the best of you. âHunter, please.â
His eyes at least opened at your desperation. You wished so badly you could stay as calm for him as he always did for you and everyone else, but with the way things had gone ever since Omega was taken on Pabu, it was truly an impossible task. Each minute that ticked away without him or the others near you made you expect the worst. To see him alive was a relief, but to see him so out of it was still terrifying.
Hunter tried to speak, but he quickly tightened his jaw as his expression contorted in pain. You watched him fight to keep his eyes open again, his teeth gritting in his effort to do so. Your brow knit together as you gave him a once-over, and quickly, you saw what was happening. His right hand shook just as Crosshairâs used to, but it was more violent in the immediate aftershocks of what had happened to him.
You took his trembling hand and lifted it to your face, loosening his fingers for him and splaying them across your cheek. Your gaze remained in his the entire time, and as you secured his hand to you, you watched the pain and fear slowly begin to leave his brown eyes. It filled you with a relief to potent that you were yet again brought to tears, but you still refused to shed them.
âThere you go.â Your praise for him was another gentle whisper as you ran soothing circles over the back of his hand. âItâs okay. Youâre okay now.â
Hunterâs eyes closed again, but that time, you could tell it was purely in his own relief. You pressed a gentle kiss to his gloved palm even as your worry began to exchange itself for an all-consuming rage.
Hemlock had done this to him. Not just him, either, but also Wrecker, Crosshair, and so many others. He had to be dead. You wouldnât stand for it if he wasnât.
As if sensing your thoughts, Hunter opened his eyes to look at you the best he could. âHeâs gone.â He swallowed hard as his weak thumb ran over your cheek. You couldnât help smiling at the sweet action. âWe⌠made sure of it.â
âGood.â You held tight to his hand and wrist as you composed yourself with another breath. âWe couldnât leave him alive. Not after all heâs done.â
Before you or Hunter could say anything more, you heard Echo returning. You lowered Hunterâs hand from your face to look at him. Echo was carrying medpac as well as a blanket, both of which he handed to you with a sympathetic smile. âHere you go, Sunny.â
You set the supplies down to hold Echoâs hands between yours for a moment. âThank you, Echo.â
Echo tilted his head at you. âYou know you donât have to thank me.â He nodded at you. âWeâre family.â
That made your lips widen even more. âWe are.â
Echo returned your smile before he stepped away, guaranteeing your and Hunterâs privacy for now. You set your focus on caring for him, beginning with the removal of his wet pieces of armor. He looked as if he was going to try to help you, but you stopped him, setting a firm hand on his chest until he relaxed once again. There was a small smile that tugged on his lips as you continued your work, not stopping until all the upper pieces of his armor had been set aside. You then set the blanket around his shoulders, pulling it close together under his neck.
You held on to the corners of the fabric and kept yourself close to him. Studying the flecks of his eyes that were still slightly dazed, you began to crumble as your adrenaline wore off. There were too many close calls. Hunter had been tortured, and you werenât there to help him. He had to face down the man who had done it, not just to him but to many of your loved ones, and you werenât there to support him.
It had been a long, terrifying mission, yet he was still here, and so were you.
Hunter was the one to act first. His hand rose to the side of your face as he encouraged you to rest your forehead against his. You remained gentle, still wary of his frayed senses as you touched him. âItâs okay.â Hunterâs voice was no more than a rasp, but it was still much stronger than it had been before. That gave you hope, a feeling so sweet that it only made the tears in your eyes even harder to resist. âJust like you said before.â
His other arm wrapped itself around you, encouraging you to fully relax into his side. His head was still resting against your own even as he cradled you against him. Hunter took the corner of the blanket on your side and lifted it so that the two of you were sharing its warmth.
You began to shake your head, the swirling emotions of the dayâespecially the guiltâbeginning to swallow you whole. âI should be helping you.â
Hunter raised his brow at you. âYou are helping me.â He closed his eyes and pressed his lips to your forehead, keeping them there even as he went on. âYou were all I needed.â
The sweetness of his words nearly healed you in a single, softening blow, but another angle you took on them shattered that illusion in a heartbreaking way. âYou needed me,â you nearly cried, âand I wasnât there.â
Hunter lifted himself from your head, his gaze looking horrified as he realized exactly what you were going through. âNo.â He shook his head and cupped the side of your face with his gloved hand. âNo, no, no. Thatâs not what I meant.â His thumb caught one of your tears the moment it left your lashes. âIâm relieved you werenât there. It was dangerous. IâŚâ he paused, circling his jaw as he considered his words, âI snapped when I realized Omega was there, and that she was in danger. I even impaled one of the assassins.â
You blinked through your tears and tightened your jaw in hardly concealed anger for your enemies. âGood.â
Hunter huffed, clearly amused by your vengeful spirit as he went on. âWhat I meant wasâŚâ Hunter had to pause again. His expression began to fall in a worry so genuine that it made your chest ache all over again. âI didnât know what had happened to you. After we got Hemlock and saved Omega, I knew that everyone was okayâexcept for you.â He closed his eyes and rested his forehead against yours again. âI needed to know.â
You set your hand over his, hoping to reassure him. âIâm okay.â
Hunter reopened his eyes and lifted the corner of his mouth. âNow I know. And, as you can see, itâs already helped me recover.â He ran his thumb over your cheek again as he nodded, minding your head against his own. âIâm okay, too.â
Still, the memory of Wrecker describing Hunterâs screams mixed with what you had already seen and inferred was too much for you to handle. Your vision began to blur again as you spoke through the knot in your throat. âIâm sorry this happened to you.â You closed your eyes and resisted the urge to tremble in your utter grief for him. âIâm so sorry.â
Hunter held you more closely, his hand moving from your cheek to your chin to gently tilt your head up more at him. It encouraged you to reopen your eyes and meet his warm, calming gaze. âYou never have to apologize on behalf of our enemies.â His eyes lowered from yours for a moment before he raised them again. âIt wasnât easy, but we did it. We completed the mission.â Hunterâs lips began to stretch in a warm smile that you hadnât seen in a long, long time. âWeâre all free.â
As the truth of his words began to sink in, you returned his smile, relief finally pouring over you in uncontrollable waves. No longer was the sickening devastation of what he had been through; instead, all you could feel was the sweet, sweet feeling of a victory that was well-earned. âWe did it.â
Hunterâs gaze glittered more as he watched you share in his joy. His thumb ran over your chin as he went on. âNow that weâre freeâŚâ his nose brushed yours, âhow does a lifetime on Pabu sound?â
You couldâve sobbed right there at the idea of the dream youâd longed for actually coming true, but you were too caught up in your shared affection to give in to anything except for him. âThat sounds perfect.â
With that, Hunter kissed you with all the strength he had left, each movement of his lips against yours a gentle promise of what was still to come. You were more than happy to lose yourself in him and the future that was finally in reach, even if all you had to grasp onto physically in that moment was his wet locks of hair. You took your time with him just as he did with you, knowing that at long last, it was finally on your side.
When you parted, you stayed close together, your hands braced upon his chest as you raised your brow at him. A genuine wave of concern washed over you as you spoke to him. âWas that too overwhelming for your senses?â
Hunter offered a reassuring smile in return. âOnly in the best way.â He gave you a quick kiss before he encouraged you to lean fully against him, silently urging you to seek rest with him in a way he desperately needed. You obliged, your head resting upon the inside of his shoulder and chest as you closed your eyes in sweet relief.
It hadnât been easy, and it sure as hell would still take lots of healing for everyone, but it was truly worth it. All of you were finally free, and you were going to take advantage of every sacrifice that made your freedom possibleâstarting with the time you and Hunter had been given to simply rest.
