He looks disappointed when she says it, his eyes clouding over. She almost apologizes for snapping at him. But she reminds herself that he shouldn't be here at all, he shouldn't be here with her. "Goodbye, Rhaegar," she says gently, not allowing any trace of emotion to surface in her voice. The name sounds foreign coming out of her mouth, as though it belongs to someone else. She wishes for the days to go back to before he met Lyanna. Before everything turned sour. Before it was too late. or Rhaegar returns to her but things are difficult now.

What Is Meant For You Will Stay: Rhaenys-centric, angst.

Rhaenys was gently shaken awake. The sheets beneath her rustled a bit as she moved, the night shift she wore rode up as she squirmed trying to get away from the callous hands that shook her awake. Her mind was foggy and disoriented as she stirred awake. Rhaenys sprung to life when her mind finally registered that someone was with her, in her chambers, late at night. Her eyes searched wildly in the darkness, desperately trying to catch a glimpse of the stranger. “A man does not wish to harm the Princess,” the voice came out in a low tone, almost like a faint whisper, “The Princess must remain calm,” the voice was masculine and Rhaenys felt the fear within her tremble. or Rhaegar flees to Essos with his family, though he leaves his daughter behind. Years later, he hires a faceless man to bring her to him.

Tangled Web by L. M. Montgomery chapter 1 part 1 (my commentary).

Disclaimer: this post does not contain Tangled Web's spoilers, but there are several references to other LMM's books; The Blue Castle, Emily of New Moon, Anne of Green Gables, Jane of Lantern Hill, Marigold. I tried to keep it spoiler-free (but there are some minor spoilers for Emily and The Blue Castle), so just in case - all references to other novels are written in a blue colour!

Commentary:

The first sentence is so fascinating! It indicates that there are many mysteries and rumors associated with Aunt Becky's jug, which we are yet to discover. I love how Montgomery tells us that "this story is true" - it makes a reader feel important, as if they had been appointed to become a guardian of the most important family's secrets to which only a select few were allowed.

It is worth noting that family heirlooms (which jug seems to be) have always been an important aspect of Montgomery's books (A Lost Diamond in Emily's series, Marilla's amethyst brooch, Anne's porcelain dogs: Gog and Magog). We don't know a thing about the jug yet - whether it is beautiful or ugly, old or new, in a perfect condition or badly damaged. We don't know the stories associated with the jug, nor its origins. Yet, we realize that the jug will be the axis of this story.

Montgomery, as always, manages to interest the reader in a few short sentences, while at the same time introducing us to some characters. The above-mentioned characters (named Peter Penhallow, Big Sam Dark, Dandy Dark and Penny Dark) seem to be mere actors in this comedy-drama, whose epicenter is the jug. The allusions are delightful: "Peter Penhallow might to-day have been photographing lions alone in African jungles, and Big Sam Dark would, in all probability, never have learned to appreciate the beauty of the unclothed female form". A pure genius!!!

It's fascinating that sometimes the smallest objects can change a person's entire life, as was the case with Aunt Becky's jug. The object is therefore a symbol; just as in The Blue Castle, a rose bush symbolizes new life, freedom and happiness, just as in Emily's Quest The Lost Diamond became a symbol of creativity and literary success. What will it symbolize? According to the short description we are given in this paragraph; a change.

I love the idea of a novel, centred around a big family. Family bonds are incredibly important in Montgomery's novels: sometimes they are freeing (as was the case with Anne), sometimes they teach one about life (as was in Emily's case), sometimes they make it impossible to be oneselves (as was in Valancy's and partly, Jane's cases).

The family in The Tangled Web seems interesting from the very beginning. The idea of marrying only close relations seems... concerning, by today's standards. In real life, children, born to closely related parents, are more prone to suffer from the health-issues (we'll see if that is the case in the novel, too).

On the other hand, the marriage between first cousins may not have seemed too concerning in these times. It occurs in other Montgomery's novels, too (for example, The Murrays trying to marry a seventeen year old Emily Starr to her cousin, Andrew Murray).

I absolutely adore the idea of Aunt Becky being the head of the clan! In some respects, Montgomery really was ahead of the times in which she had lived. She created many strong, determined female characters, who ruled the family (Aunt Elizabeth, Rachel Lynde, Jane's and Marigold's grandmothers, Miss Cornelia Bryant, or even Marilla).

Aunt Becky's "honesty" reminded me a bit about Valancy's Aunt Isabel ("Aunt Isabel prided herself on saying what she thought, but didn’t like it so well when other people said what they thought to her".)

Aunt Becky seems to be a fascinating character! I really enjoy her "I am throwing a pre-funeral party, but if you want to eat anything, bring your own food, I am not going to bother about this on my death-bed" or "Please don't pretend to cry over my death" vibes. What a lady!!!

Also, there is something in Aunt Becky that reminds me of Mr. Carpenter's words: "Somehow—one needs—a spice—of evil—in every personality. It's the—pinch of—salt—that brings out—the flavour."

I love the idea of Aunt Becky's "levees"!

Uncle Pippin reminds me a little about Valancy's Uncle Benjamin (although he doesn't crack any bad jokes yet). We shall see what he turns out to be. The allusion to the uncertain history of his conception seems very interesting, too. Quite risky for a Montgomery's work, I would say!

"I've a hunch that the old lady is going to start something," said Uncle Pippin to his white nag." - me too, dear Uncle Pippin, me too.

Moving (2023) is a Korean Drama show where certain people have superpowers. The protagonist, Kim Bong-seok, is a highschooler who has the ability to levitate, along with all of his senses being greatly increased. The heroine, Jang Hee-soo, has the power to regenerate. We learn over the course of the show that their parents also had the same abilities as them and were special agents for Korea, going on various missions for the country.

How do structural mythology, cultural studies, and cultural history reflect the series’ world and world-building around superheroes?

Cultural studies and history greatly alter the world-building, as the superheroes in the series have to hide their identities. Many with powers work as agents, going on special missions for their country. Any media that potentially leaks information on the existence of people possessing superpowers is immediately deleted from the web. Agents with powers must have codenames and need to keep their true identities hidden from the general public.

In what ways are the superheroes and their abilities informed by their racial, gender, sexual, and cultural identities? 

Lee Mi-hyun, the mother of the protagonist Kim Bong-seok, is greatly affected by her gender. She is a retired agent who is the only woman to participate in a black ops mission. However, after losing much of her eyesight, she is forced to become an information analyst. Here, she is given the job of becoming close with another black ops agent in order to get information out of him. She is only chosen for the job because of her looks. Within this agency, it is clear that men are chosen for on field work while women are not.

In what ways do costumes and concealing identities further separate the superheroes from normal society? How necessary is it for the superheroes to hide their true identities to successfully achieve their goals?

It is necessary for the superheroes to conceal their identities because if revealed, they can be targeted by other agents from rival countries. An agent named Frank is given a mission by the US to track down and kill retired Korean agents, and he succeeds in eliminating quite a few. Blending into normal society and keeping their identities and powers hidden is an important part of the job for each of the agents.

How do the economic, political, and social events that occurred during the series’ creation and broadcast cultivate and inform the superheroes’ decisions and actions?

The backstory of the heroin, Jang Hee-soo, is revealed partway through the show. It is shown that she makes the decision at her old school to fight a group of bullies, seventeen in all. Because of her ability to regenerate, she leaves the fight without a scratch. There is an interesting dichotomy between her character and the US agent Frank, who also has the ability to regenerate. However, Frank is like a machine, a man who grew up in Iowa and has no motive but to complete missions. While Hee-Soo fights bullies, Frank is often the bully. Yet we see how similar the two characters actually are, as both are seen choking one of their enemies in their backstory. Frank having no concept of family is shown throughout his character arc, signaling that his fate would have been different with a better upbringing.

How do the superheroes question themselves, each other, and their obligations and duties to the people around them?

The protagonist, Kim Bong-seok, is forced to wear weights on his ankles and carry a heavy backpack to avoid levitating in front of other people. This decision is made by his mother, who is very overprotective. We learn later on that his mother acts this way because of the death of the father, who also had the ability to levitate. Because his mother is overprotective and at times very controlling, Bong-seok grows up very submissive. There is a moment in which he confesses that he does not like himself as a person and wants to change. Had he not been given powers, his character and personality would probably be much different.

Throughout the whole song, it keeps a positive outlook. Never ever does it focus on the negative/ bad circumstance. I Can't Believe It's Not Butters! - LozisLaw (Because of course Lozzie is going to create a fantastic Marjie fic. This fic is one of the inspirations that made me what to write my fic. It takes you right into Butters' psyche as he figures out who Marjie is to him and of course there is tons of angst between Kenny and Marjie. What's a Marjie fic if there is no angst? Please go read!)

don't know where i'm going (i promise it won't be boring) - Aquaphobe (I love the plot and the concept! I'm assuming it's a bittersweet ending since it takes place three days before the world ends, but it's a slow burn and a hurt/comfort with Kenny and Butters at the forefront)

you’re just seventeen and all you wanna do is disappear - deakcore (I don't like chat fics, but this one is an exception XD It mainly focuses on style, but I love how everyone vibes in this one. Just friends being friends XD)

Bad Times at the La Casa Bonita - Icandigelvis (The first chapter out of the second is up, and although no bunny has happened, I'm honestly invested because of the plot. It's based on "Bad Times at the El Royale", so if you've seen that, you'll know what might happen. I have not and I'm on the edge of my seat XD)

Take Us Alive - nekodairy (The fic is based on "It" and I really like how the author adapted it to fit the South Park atmosphere. I love the interaction between the characters and I also love how they take the concept of "It" and made it their own story.)

Bite Me - AHeckenGoodDeviant (Again, fantastic concept, and I love the depth and story behind each character. I'm highly invested in the plot and our bunny boys are met with immense hurt (idk if there is comfort) but there is a hell of a lot of angst. Takes place during a zombie apocalypse and the creativity with how the characters interact with their environment really helps paint a great picture of what conditions people live in now)

(NFSW) Saturday Waffles - LozisLaw (Another LozisLaw recommendation? Color everyone surprised XD She wrote this as a gift for me and it's beautiful. Angst, tension, fluff, hope, the whole nine yards. This one gets pretty dirty so...😏)

May Nothing But Happiness Come Through Your Door - boy-thighs (sop) (This is the epitome of Bunny comfort fics. It's written so well that I honestly think this could be its own canon episode in the SP universe. Kenny tries to make amends with Butters for ruining his birthday and shenanigans ensue from there. Beautiful and absolutely hilarious story!)

(NFSW) Barbie - skr3ex (Butters goes to a male strip club and ends up getting more than he bargained for. It's filthy and smutty so if you need something steamy, here it is. Oh, and bonus: There is some plot to it and that's always a plus in my book XD)

(NFSW) Posessive, Passive & Pensive. - fanbandoms (Again, it's smutty, smutty, smutty, but the plot and the character interactions are really something to read. This is a porn with plot, with emphasis on the first P, and the drama that happens, especially in the first chapter was *chef's kiss*. I hope this one gets finished soon!)

Very Good Bad Thing - UniqueMemoria (A classic mysy/chaos fic and just makes me smile and feel good when I read it. The plot is quite intriguing and I love the addition of the OC the author adds! The author also draws super cute and amazing art so please check them out on insta and tumblr <3)

(NFSW) Twenty Dollars and a Stain on the Couch - Cheylouwho, valzilla (Before diving into this one, please read the tags and archive warnings as this does delve into sensitive topics. That said, I'm in love with this one and jump out of my seat when I see it updated. Every pairing and character has a plot of its own and is connected in an intricate web of crime drama that I look forward to when the characters' storylines intersect with one another. This fills my Law and Order heart with the plot of this fic and god damn do I freaking love all the drama that happens in it! Highly recommend this one!)
