Reminder to avoid buying anything crochet new from big stores. Crochet (unlike knit) CANNOT be done by a machine and must be done by an actual human being. The person who made it was definitely not paid an appropriate amount for their labour. Most big stores use sweatshops anyway and I know it’s hard to completely avoid buying anything from a major store. But if those specific items don’t sell, we can send a message to companies that we don’t want items made fully by hand using slave labour
This summer, avoid any new crochet items. You don’t need THAT specific top that badly

I really don't understand people who defend fast fashion like "it's the only thing I can afford," or "celebrities shouldn't be lecturing us about it." You're telling me you WANT to wear clothes that feel like garbage bags, smell like gasoline, and rip after 3 washes? You really do have better options even if you're broke

one post before bed and that is: why are the most fun words to say also the worst to say.
the example i'm thinking of is gyatt. i'm so sorry if this makes you think less of me BUT HEAR ME OUT
it has a really nice consonant-y-vowel pattern that is really fun to pronounce, where you can stretch out the transition between the y and the vowel (gyyyyaaaaatt) and then it has a nice sharp ending with the t
but also. i cannot use gyatt as a vocal stimulus because. just because. even writing the word makes me imagine the reactions it gets from people
so in conclusion: gyatt is a fun and appealing word to say but god forbid i say it out loud in public

truly my LEAST favorite form of advertisement these days is the faux-tiktoker/influencer who is here to Sell Me Something. the “omg unbox my Pureology (TM) skincare haul!!!” “doing the #NespressoChallenge!!!” “you guys will not BELIEVE what i got from shein-“ like its scary. its WEIRD. not only do i have no idea who these perfectly manicured, babytalking people are they feel less like real people than even an actual advertiser does. stop trying to make me believe you are my friend. you are something inhuman to me. you are a changeling. you are a brand wearing ill fitting human skin and i see its skeletal shape shift beneath the surface.

I'm thinking about Tumblr Live again and ruminating on WHY it's such a huge flop and I think I've figured it out: They've completely refused to make it a tumblr feature...
By which I mean (begrudgingly goes to unsnooze Tumblr live) this:
Tumblr media
^This is meant with zero insult or derision to the people above, but these are absolutely not Tumblr users.
Every single thumbnail I've ever seen for Tumblr live seems to say "This is for clout!" "This is for a thirst trap!" "This is for influencers!" "This is for Tiktok wannabe stars!" "This is for showing your pretty filtered face and reaping what people on Instagram and Tiktok are desperately chasing!"
I'm remembering that Reddit has (or had) livestreams you could tune into like this. I've tapped into some. Ones I remember offhand include:
a guy just wandering around downtown in his city silently showing people the streets and stuff
a guy streaming his attempt to beat the last level of Celeste
a guy streaming his dog he was petting
And that, that was Reddit. That was undoubtedly just regular Reddit users going "oh stream feature? yeah okay. here's my dog." "here's my video game." "here's my street corner in Prague."
And when I think of all the recent successful Tumblr features, they're all things that correctly tapped into actual Tumblr user interests. Blaze had people go "haha yeah here's my dog." "here's my advertisement for a horse lawyer (lawyer who is a horse)." They let us buy crabs because, fuck it, crabs. The blue checkmarks were funny. Polls turned into the fandom brackets people have desperately wanted to make for a decade+. I'd wager the merch that calls on old Tumblr memes is at least decently successful.
If Tumblr Live wanted the chance to be successful, it should have been angled toward Tumblr users. "Here, you can livestream your cat if you want." "You can livestream yourself working on some fanart and chatting." "You can livestream yourself going bird watching because birds are your hyperfixation and you can identify them all by their song to all your followers who want to tune in for bird facts."
But Tumblr Live has never tried to be that. It ONLY seems like it wants to be a Tiktok-clone, Instagram-clone, clout-chaser baited-hook trying to pull converts over from Tiktok/Insta/etc who are trying to grow their influencer brand, which Tumblr is lethally hostile to.
(And ALL of this is only touching on the concept behind what's happening here. I haven't even touched on the third-party streaming service and questionable data protection.)
Like fine, I guess I get it from a business model of trying to grow your userbase--since catering to your existing userbase doesn't pull in new meat. But this will not work. Because anyone, tumblr-native or not, trying to grow themselves as an influencer will NOT find success here. This place is not a place of honor. No highly esteemed deed is commemorated here. Nothing valued is here. What is here was dangerous and repulsive to us. We will not watch your Shein haul stream.

Tumblr media
these questions are pretty similar so i'll answer both at once.
to buy from a chinese indie brand, you need two things: the brand's taobao link and a proxy site account. taobao is a chinese storefront (?) that most of these stores are hosted on. there are plenty of western stores online that also carry taobao brand clothing - like arcana archive, glitch cupids, and pixie rebels - but i would recommend just getting your stuff from a proxy as those stores often up the prices of the clothes.
note that it can be a bit of a struggle to get the taobao link of a store, especially if you don't have an account (which is notoriously difficult to get these days), but i did find some link lists! (mostly lolita stuff as that's what taobao is most popular for among alt fashionistas ^_^)
Tumblr media
some other brands that i recommend -
eyeelike - y2k inspired, though their stock is usually very limited. sizes up to UK 10-12 (L) i believe
Tumblr media Tumblr media
link (lemme know if it's broken):
frufru - bright, colorful, sorta harajuku-esque! i heavily recommend their star messenger bags, been wanting to get one of my own for a while ^_^
Tumblr media Tumblr media
link
and hbreaker - a more visual kei sort of thing! more edgy than the other two stores, but i'm yet to check it out properly
Tumblr media Tumblr media
link
so, now that you have the link, you need a proxy site. this is so that you can send the clothes over from china to your own country. in the past, i would've recommended pandabuy, but it died a few months ago due to illegal replica selling. for that, i'd recommend avoiding proxies that allow replicas, because they might go under while you're trying to get clothes shipped. (that happened to me T_T)
some that are reliable are:
sugargoo
superbuy
spreenow
now all you do is use the search bar (make sure it's on the "shop" mode rather than "product"), and plug in the link to the shop you want to buy from, and it should be the first result. get all your clothes, and now all you have to do is have them shipped out! shipping usually costs a lot (£20+ from my experience) and if you're buying a haul, it can be over £200 for just 4-6 items, so i'd recommend only buying stuff you KNOW you're going to wear often and enjoy. shipping should only take 2-3 weeks (at least in my experience - i live in the UK, it might take more time in the US.) and boom! now you can dress like those cool girls on xiaohongshu!
there are also two western stores i'd like to go over that have similar clothes - sixth dimension and minga london.
Tumblr media
sixth dimension has many good qualities - they have more inclusive sizing (up to UK XL), reasonable prices based on their quality, and they restock and do sales often. i heavily recommend them if you can't afford the high shipping prices or if the sizing is too limited for you!
Tumblr media
unfortunately, i have less nice things to say about minga london. they're highly extortionate in terms of pricing - i've seen shein quality cardigans sold for upwards of £70, for example. they do drops often, and have been accused of fast fashion but i'm not sure if that's legit or not. they've also stolen designs in the past. however, they do have inclusive sizing, up to XXXL. i'd recommend only buying from them if they're doing a sale, or if you literally have no other choice.
now regarding fruits mag - unfortunately, you can't buy from them. fruits mag is a japanese magazine that went over a variety of different street styles, so if you want to buy from fruits, you'd have to buy from the brands that the people in the magazines are wearing. as fruits was most popular in the 2000s, most of those brands are defunct...however, i do have some recommendations for japanese alternative brands!
alice and the pirates - popular lolita fashion. pretty good sizing i think, and they do worldwide shipping too iirc.
baby the stars shine bright - same as aatp, but more "cutesy".
acdc rag - yami kawaii type clothes with inclusive sizing.
dearmylove - jirai kei/dark girly clothing and beautiful shoes. inclusive sizing, i'm pretty sure they have a full plus size range! also collabed with needy streamer overdose lol
liz lisa - lolita/mori kei/girly styles and pretty coats. quite expensive tho...
moi-meme-moitie - the brand of malice mizer's guitarist mana-sama! gothic lolita. i'm not sure about sizing or prices.
6%dokidoki - yume kawaii and decora style. very colorful! i'm not sure about sizing.
angel blue - japanese kids clothing, usually worn in general kawaii and jojifuku styles. as it's for kids, the sizing is NOT inclusive at all, UK size S-M at the most from what i've seen. usually you can only find resellers on depop, but the pricing usually isn't horrible.
other than brands, i'd recommend looking for clothes thrifting on and offline (hit big city thrift stores for better chances of alt clothing), buying accessories from verified etsy sellers, and just looking around the house for anything you can turn into an accessory or part of an outfit! i hope this post helps you though!

the very idea of a person self-identifying as a “commentary” content creator is sort of lame and impotent and repulsive in that theyre already like very presumptively assuming a place of discernment and intelligence and a sense of rising above the fray and above the alleged stupid dumb rote memetic imitative trend brainlessness of upper middle class like tiktok Influencer or Normie people but even in their analyses—which are often mostly or at least directionally correct—THEY ARE GUILTY OF EXACTLY THE SAME KIND OF GROUPTHINK and TRENDS, just using stretched-out academized language, e.g., every point they make criticizing “overconsumption” is the exact same, albeit vaguely correct, as every fellow like vaguely left person and it’s the exact same as every textual social media’s current majority wave of opinion. And so they’re like dialectically framing themselves in this narrative as a very thin brave cutting-edge new criticism layer OVER the like dumb sheeple overconsumers who just latch onto trends and don’t think for themselves—but that stimulus is so small and the response (criticism of the stimulus and either explicitly or implicitly That Type Of Person, usually “”normies”””) is not new at all and they’re only repeating mindlessly the tropes that have already been laundered through X The Everything App or The Atlantic consensus but it’s framed as suchhhh smart important sociological analysis and the other problem with it is that implicit in this “commentary” or in this criticism is this sense of gleefulness that they get to be on this side of the tide of criticism, such that even though they ARE right, and their explicitly stated reasons are indeed like correct and follow through, you know that these reasons really just a mask for something else, a deeper personal social resentment/jealousy, and criticism in this way, a leveling of the playing field with the acting-wrongly-by-overconsuming socialmediabrainedNormie who is perceived somehow to be higher either by virtue of wealth or because of social status/popularity or (and i think this is a very big one) because they are Happy. The act of criticism confers intellectual status; it promises status to these people who, deep down, know they shouldn’t have it. Because they’re rotten and dumb and groupthinky too, and they have the added bonus of being moralising and bandwagony after pretending to be above that! Because they don’t have the horsepower to actually organically react and form thoughts on these cultural trends—they HAVE to wait for the vocabulary to trickle down (the term overconsumption) and for the “go ahead” to be given . Which is why all of the criticism is exactly the same!!!!!!!!!!!! BUT ITS ALSO TRUE THAT THE TREE SUGAR SCRUB OVERCONSUMPTION SHEIN THING IS CRAZY. But the criticism of it by certain people just rings so subtly jealous and sour and smirky and like it’s driven by lowheat simmering anger and its just like ugh i dislike you even more than the shein $300 haul people because you have a resentful vindictive wrongness of spirit that you’re trying to launder as thoughtful anticapitalist cultural analysis

I know you're probably sick of hearing about amazon in general but I just want to mention that their impact on the environment is truly worst than most people think. I work somewhere that process Amazon returns and it makes me genuinely disgusted at some people's consumerism. I'm talking about people bringing back litteral dozens of amazon parcels on a weekly basis. Clearly they had no intention of keeping those things, they just love getting a new package and opening it. It's not a rare behavior either. The return process uses a ton of fuel (much more than if they were juste returning something to their local store) and just as much plastic (seriously, I know it doesn't look like that much but I tried to imagine how much tape was used on a daily basis just for amazon returns and it made me sick to my stomach. And that's just the tape...). Anyway, I'm venting at this point but you're 1000% correct, amazon is trash and I don't trust anyone selfish enough to defend it.
yeah :( part of the problem is that "hauls" are now a type of online content. people buy stuff to open it on camera to their followers with no real intention of keeping any of it. it's an indefensible way to behave tbh. someone buying a couple of cheapo pants off shein a couple times of year isn't great but it's better than buying stuff every week so you have boxes to open on camera. you can't act that way and call yourself radical or leftist or marxist or whatever left leaning words people want to use as identity markers. like we can't get around buying stuff sometimes and I don't want to live in a world where nothing exists, even fun frivolous stuff - but the fact that so many people act like "well if I want something what exactly can I do besides buy it??" as some sort of defense to buying things when...you could literally want less and maybe explore why you constantly want things and maybe realize you are being manipulated by marketing. if you use your airfryer every day and plan on keeping it clean and working for 10 years, that's awesome. if you bought it because you saw 17 reels online about it being cool and only used it twice, you could have kept your money and done a little elbow grease (barely) to go look up how to cook those things with the stove and oven you have. if you feel like you need to avoid repeating outfits all month, maybe think about who actually benefits from you thinking like that. so if you see yourself as so left you're off the spectrum, you really should be trying the best you can to buy less and optimize more. and as a hint, like you say, if you're returning stuff constantly, you're not doing so hot. imo ;)

The phrase "no ethical consumption under capitalism" is so tiktokified and it drives me fucking CRAZY.
yeah! there is no ethical consumption under capitalism! You're right!! but you're using it in the context of a shitty "All or nothing" mentality.
In the words of some random comment I read a few months ago, all the fuckers using that phrase in the wrong way are just saying “If I can’t save the world, there is no point in trying”
SMALL CHANGES HELP. no matter how small. YOUR VOICE MATTERS.
If you really stood by what you're saying, the logical thing is to consume LESS. not use it to defend breaking boycott or your shitty massive 500$ shein haul
