33 Years of #Shiva (07/12/1990).
Ramgopal Varma's "Shiva" stands as a significant milestone in Indian cinema, mainly due to its pioneering approach in various aspects of filmmaking. One of the most notable contributions of "Shiva" was its innovative cinematography and sound design, which were quite ahead of their time in the Indian context. The film broke new ground with its realistic and unorthodox visual storytelling, coupled with groundbreaking camera work, setting a new benchmark in the industry. Additionally, "Shiva" was instrumental in introducing fresh talent, both in front of the camera and behind the scenes, aiding in the launch of several notable careers in Indian cinema.
Another key aspect where "Shiva" left its mark was in its portrayal of violence. Unlike the stylized and often exaggerated action scenes common in Indian films of that era, "Shiva" presented violence in a more realistic and gritty manner, influencing the way action sequences were handled in subsequent Indian movies. Alongside its technical prowess, the film was also acclaimed for its strong narrative and well-rounded character development. Moving away from the melodramatic norms of the time, it focused more on creating relatable characters and engaging storylines. This shift not only enriched the film's appeal but also had a lasting impact on the narrative styles of Indian cinema. In essence, "Shiva" is often regarded as a turning point in the Indian film industry, marking the beginning of a new era, especially in the action and crime genres, and has influenced a generation of filmmakers.

Lost the original post, but someone was talking about Tim mostly just having the same gallery of Rogues as the rest of the Bats, and that’s not actually true. Our lad had over 200 issues of solo comic during post-Crisis, he definitely has some Rogues that are his more than anyone else’s!
King Snake (Edmund Dorrance). Dorrance is 100% specifically one of Tim’s villains. If in modern comics any writers decided to resurrect him and start using him again I would be delighted, because he’s such a painful white guy who thinks he’s all that and better than the Hong Kong-based gang he runs. He’s also ‘died’ multiple times and just because he appeared in Blackest Night doesn’t mean he’s still dead now, we’ve had two universe reboots since then!
Lynx (and the rest of the Ghost Dragons). Both Lynx I and Lynx II are also Tim’s foes, though he’s happy to share them with Cass if she also wants to get some kicks in. Lynx I also has died twice (both times due to Cass) because a writer couldn’t be bothered to check the canon bible while writing.
Ulysses Armstrong. The General mostly exists to be an absolute pain and cause Tim angst. Also I’ll never forgive them for killing off Matthew and Hillary Armstrong, who helped Tim out from their very first appearances.
Anarky/Lonnie Machin. Tim’s shadow half. They’ve been feuding since 1990 and there’s no sign they plan to stop (even when they’re working together).
Ratcatcher is arguably more Tim’s villain than Bruce’s, and nobody else really deals with him.
The Sk8er Bois. Bring them (and Tim’s extremely dangerous skateboard) back!
Johnny Warlock. Wow do I ever hate Johnny, and he’s super annoying, but he’s definitely in Tim’s gallery.
The obvious one: Lady Shiva. She’s not Tim’s exclusively but only Cass has a closer connection in the Batfam and Tim’s connection is arguably closer than Bruce’s.
Plus of the more standard Bat Rogue collection:
Arthur Brown particularly dislikes Tim (alongside the obvious pick that he’s part of Steph’s gallery)
Maxie Zeus has mostly only tangled with Tim out of people who aren’t Bruce.
Arguably Tim’s the main Robin to deal with Mad Hatter too.
Ventriloquist is again a Tim-as-Robin era villain (mostly 1, I don’t think 2 spent much time near any Robin)
There’s probably some correlation between Bane’s position among the Rogues and Tim to make, because of how their timelines cross, but equally I highly dislike Bane so I’m not going to bother sketching it out.
Riddler has a soft spot for Tim.
So does Selina, whose first reluctant team up with that kid was during the original Clench.
Can’t forget Jean-Paul Valley (while hallucinating St Dumas)
And that’s just off the top of my head, there’s definitely others with more than a single storyline.

This is dark but do you think Comics!MK have any surviving extended family or is he truly the last of his family?
I like to think he has cousins but their parents didn't flee to America like Elias did so he hardly sees them
MCU Marc doesn't talk to family for very different reasons obviously
I got an ask!
Now this is a truly difficult question to answer for a lot of reasons, but I will do my best!
Comics Moon Knight has a LOT of re-writes. Moench only included Randall in Marc's known family. He was killed off before Moon Knight even had his own official comic (See the Incredible Hulk appearance, which I will review someday in the hopefully not too distant future). We don't get a lot of references to Randall in Moench's run after that. Like at all. In fact, there is so little discussed about Marc's family in Moench's OG run that I'm pretty sure that people forgot about his brother all together unless Marvel decided they needed to do something and then we got a quick "Oh yeah and then this happened" moment.
Zelenetz gave us Elias Spector and more of a family backstory. We got the story of how their mother died when he was very young, which is going to be retconned later on in Lemire's run when we see his father dying much earlier in Marc's life and his mother still being alive. We get no mention of Randall in this. There are a lot of people at the Shiva/Funeral, but since Elias was a prominent figure in their community (Rabbi), it's hard saying who is family and who is community.
As far as I am currently aware (I haven't dived through ALL the comics in a VERY long time and my re-read is slow and steady), no other family has ever shown up or is mentioned.
HISTORY LESSON!!! (TW Holocaust)
Elias Spector, as noted by Zelenetz, is from Czechoslovakia. Those of you that got a bit more of a history lesson than what they bothered to toss at you in high school, may recognize that this country has been through A LOT. So much so that it has been split, reunited, renamed, taken over, given independence, divided, and renamed and split over and over and over again.
It is safe to assume that his family lived there for a few generations. It's hard to say when they arrived there, but Jewish history is…strife with certain parts of Europe inviting Jewish people in then going "Just kidding" and kicking them out (or killing them) immediately afterwards.
And with the history of Czechoslovakia's REPEATED wars and revolutions and divides…. Who knows the history of the Spectors of if they all settled there or if they had been divided over time.
But what we DO know…
According to a census. In 1921, the Jewish population was 354,342. In 1946 it was 55,000. This was not because they decided to move.
The numbers continued to drop. By 1990, it was 7,800.
The German occupation started in 1930 and was not a pretty picture from the start. In 1939, the Jewish population realized this was not going to go well and desperately started to get out, but 78,000 had already been killed. Many were sent to surrounding camps where Typhus epidemics along with brutal conditions started to wipe them out even before 'the final solution' was put into action. Getting dark here: of the 15,000 CHILDREN that were sent to Auschwitz, only 93 came back.
In 1948, Communist Russia took over. Russia does not have a good history with their Jewish population.
In fact, the 40 year period of this occupation is called "Communist Holocaust". Jewish people were forbidden from practicing their religion and Jewish leaders were forced to leave, convert, or die. Children were prohibited from learning their own culture or religious practices.
So do I think that Moon Knight has any cousins surviving in Europe that didn't flee to America like Elias did?
It is with a very heavy heart that I have to given an honest answer: No.
Is it possible that maybe some of the family left with Elias and came to America or went to England? Maybe. Possibly some made it to Denmark or one of the few places that tried to help get a few out. But if they stayed in any of the countries that were occupied, I don't think they made it. And this may have given another reason behind Marc's anger at his father's unwillingness to do anything about the anti-antisemitism that he witnessed.
Perhaps Marc saw the children with extended family and wondered why he didn't have any. Or why they had no pictures or why his mother and father wouldn't talk about those that were left behind.
If he DID happen to have ANY family that survived, Marc probably has no idea where they are or how to find them or who they are. After the Holocaust, the surviving Jewish population was so scattered and left without homes to return to. The countries that they had fled did not welcome them back. Many didn't want to go back. It has only really been recently with the modernization of the internet that efforts have been made for survivors to reach out and try to find out what happened to their families.
With their father and mother gone, I wonder how much about his family Marc actually knew. The REAL question is: Would Marc, Jake, or Steven make an effort to try to reach out? Would they want to find survivors? Would they feel guilty? Would they be able to even talk with the surviving family? Would they want to?
I don't think Marc would. I think this is one more burden on his shoulders and he doesn't want to be a dark shadow on the surviving family tree. I think Steven would be curious and attempt to dig up records to find out what happened to his father's town or people, but I don't think he'd reach out. Jake doesn't travel. Jake's home and people are New York. I think his soft heart would feel the loss too much to want to know. But I do think that if he found any family living in New York, he'd wander by to say hello.
That being said: What about their daughter? Is she being raised Jewish? Marlene certainly is not Jewish. Or at least she was never given that designation in any of the comics that I can recall or in Moench's run. Even if she is not being raised Jewish, perhaps she would be the one to reach out. A generation reaching out to another to find answers and connection. And maybe through her, it would bring the Moon Knight system back to their own connections.
I can see Jake curiously looking at pictures of grandparents and aunts and uncles and saying "Look I have my Great Uncle's mustache!" only to be reminded that his mustache is very much a fake mustache and him quipping back that he has the same taste at least. I can also see Steven being delighted to trace his roots back and saying "The Spectors are survivors." I think even Marc might be able to sit down with his daughter and recall stories he had heard growing up about the town his family comes from and the people there.
And that does bring me a bit of optimism and hope. That they can share good things about a past that they used to look at and find only pain in. That maybe it would finally let them talk about it when it was something they couldn't talk about growing up. A way for him to say "I have generational trauma, but at least I can start to let it heal through my daughter."
SO.... That's a really long answer to your question, and maybe not the one you were looking for... But it's honest and probably more than Marvel will ever give us (I fear what Marvel might do to the history if they tried).
Thanks for asking!

More Story Protag Swap AU!
Okay, I'm kinda convince that this is more of a fan service for my hyperfix but I'll make this work!
Since RGB is taking teacher's place the whole kingdom thing will be changed to a more familiar timezone. AKA 1990 something, the curse will still be present but the affects are different
The one infected with the curse will turn into a character, something similar to the world of make believe, think of it like a Madoka Magica scenario where the Magical girls become witches
It's still the same affect when the humans agree to be the Hero in the world of make believe
Another big difference is the curse. There will be characters that can curse and those who can't. RGB doesn't have the ability but claims to just for the soul purpose that humans will leave him alone
Can't decide wether to make Hero an orphan or a kid who got lost far away from the town. Bot of there encounter Plays the same with how Teacher meet Shiva, only difference is that Hero got injured and RGB [guilty enough] try to heal her in his little hideout in the woods

Batfamily Action Style: Girls with Guns
While the likes of Captain Marvel and Wonder Woman are great for female empowerment and the fun spectacle of Harley Quinn and Black Widow are fun I have found myself disappointed with how the action is lackluster compared to their male counterparts. Even the more street level heros like Colleen Wing and Elektra have rather average fight scenes even though they are part of the supporting cast of the best Martial Artists in the MCU. While their fights are good they can be better. With the Batfamily finally coming to live action what can be improved?
So what source of media can the female members of the Batfamily be inspired by?
An old genre from the golden age of Hong Kong Action Cinema is the key to really capture what they can do. The Girls with Guns subgenre. Yes Madam is a 1985 martial arts film starring Karate Champion Cynthia Rothrock and current mega star Michelle Yeoh. It is considered the first movie of this kind and kicked off this type of story. Female action stars kicking ass and taking names just as well as any of the well known male actors.
If you want to see what a Cassandra Cain/Stephanie Brown scene would look like in a fight watch this movie.
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
But these were not the only women defining this subgenre. Moon Lee, Cynthia Khan, Yukari Oshima and more were stars as well.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sadly though by the 90s the subgenre died out along with the golden era of Hong Kong Cinema. A mixture of corruption due to the Triads being involved in the Hong Kong film industry, the rise of mainland Chinese movies, and the slow reunification of Hong Kong back into the Chinese government from British ownership were 3 major reasons this era died out. Combine this with the Hong Kong financial crisis due to the reunification, other competition from different Asian countries, and major American movies like Jurassic Park coming out led to the death Hong Kong 80s cinema. While luckily it recovered and made a resurgence through reimagining and artistic direction it was never the same again.
Essentially too many hands and factors controlling the industry.
The Girls with Guns subgenre sadly fell to obscurity in western audiences eyes. Never really making a splash in pop culture compared to other kung fu movies. However echos of their works can be felt since its fall in the mids 1990s. In Japan Anime was echoing the style of action. The best shows you may know is Black Lagoon and Ghost in the Shell .
Tumblr media Tumblr media
While there is no correlation with the subgenre effecting other action movies in other Asia countries they have grown similar waves a female lead martial arts action. In 2008 ,Thailand had a short lived action star of Jeeja Yanin from her internationally acclaimed movie Chocolate. In 2013 in Indonesia the Raid 2 had amazing action scenes for their mute villian Hammer Girl played by Julie Estelle. Vietnam in 2019 gained similar fame for their movie Furie. It even got its own prequel directed by the first movie's main star Veronica Ngo. Finally in South Korea, while it was having its Renaissance in its film industry along came the film The Villianess. While more action oriented it was so good that John Wick 3 had to steal a scene from it.
Tumblr media
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tumblr media
With characters like Cassandra Cain, Lady Shiva , Black Canary and more street level heros possibly making an appearence in live action, Hollywood might as well pull out all the stops for these badass women. If they do,they might want to look outward for inspiration.

The looting of Cambodian art has been happening since the French turned up there in the 19th century. However, it really stepped up in the 1990s when a shady British "business man" got involved. He looted some of the most important historic sculptures from ancient sites of temples and palaces. He sold them illegally to some of the most important museums in the world - including the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The linked article details the efforts currently being undertaken to repatriate the art to Cambodia.
Tumblr media
One of the most important sculptures now returned to Cambodia - the 10th century masterpiece of Skanda and Shiva. The sculpture depicts the Hindu god playing with his infant son, but are also portraits of members of the ancient Khmer royal family.

Shakier logic here because I’m having to go by some things that are said in Shoten and we know not all of the elements of the Shoten versions of Tokyo Babylon were kept for the final release so they’re not canon strictly speaking
BUT there are elements that were carried over anyway. Seishirou watching Subaru fall at the train station was kept as their ‘first meeting’ in both TB and Shoten. I’m assuming in both cases this is happening in Spring as there’s a line that says Subaru is just entering his first year of high school at CLAMP School.
We also see what looks like it could very well be a small cameo of Utako and her kindergarten class on a trip to Tokyo Tower in Tokyo Babylon. The girl with the twin-tails in front of her could be Nagisa and the teacher at the back with the light hair is very likely Shiva, the teacher Utako had a crush on, so we know it’s happening while she’s in kindergarten.
Tumblr media
If I’m taking the time setting from Shoten to be consistent in Tokyo Babylon then there’s one other thing I’m taking to be carried over too and that’s Tokyo Babylon taking place at the same time as the CLAMP School series. The tiny Utako cameo is a big help in supporting this but I also choose to believe an exchange that happens in Shoten would help too if we take it to still apply to TB because in the second Shoten story Subaru mentions Duklyon and the Imonoyama Shopping District Association interrupting class.
From Duklyon we know the boys are recruited in May and we know by next spring the Imonoyama Shopping District Association as we know it has ceased to operate because Sukiyabashi is with Erii and has joined Duklyon. So if Subaru attends class sometimes and witnesses their battles it places Duklyon happening during the same period as Tokyo Babylon. And everything else also going on at clamp school.
So now we know that the autumn to spring period of 1990 to 1991 was very eventful lmao

27 March 2023: Fuzzy, Grant Lee Buffalo. (2023 Chrysalis Catalogue reissue of 1993 Slash release)
In 1993, I gave Los Angeles band Grant Lee Buffalo very little time. I was a university-radio programmer and gave this, the band’s debut, to a younger staffer to review. To this day, the only thing I can remember about any of the band’s music is a fleeting portion of Fuzzy’s title track. Their second album, 1994′s Mighty Joe Moon, didn’t appear until I was graduated from college, and if I knew but didn’t care about you during my college-radio days there was little chance I was going to pick you up later. The band carried on until 1998 (not counting a multi-year reunion run beginning in 2010). I think I saw them live once, as an opening act at St. Louis club Mississippi Nights sometime around the release of Fuzzy, but I’m not sure.
So why bother with this? When Tower Records went out of business in 2006 and I bought a ton of albums in their $1 liquidation, I picked up an album called Sheer Golden Hooks by one Jeffrey Clark (a 1996 release). I didn’t know who Clark was; I just liked the letterpress packaging and that it was on Independent Project Records, a label I admired. I loved Sheer Golden Hooks. I still ruminate about it with great fondness, having not heard it in over decade. Jeffrey Clark became an instant important figure for me after that, and I later learned that another band I’d never given the time of day, Los Angeles’s late-’80s Shiva Burlesque, featured not only Jeffrey Clark but all the members of Grant Lee Buffalo.
Understanding a band’s family tree can be of steep importance. I’ve since scrabbled to find Clark’s second album If Is (2009), and sometime in recent history I obtained the 2022 double-CD reissue of Shiva Burlesque’s two albums, their 1987 eponymous debut and 1990′s Mercury Blues. I don’t recall offhand if I bought that while this blog was on hiatus, but nonetheless it’s slowly wending its way to the top of my listening stack. And hell, I just learned in the last hour that Shiva Burlesque’s first bassist James Brenner was also in all-instrumental California band Scenic, another group I liked.
In light of learning all this history (not counting what I’m still learning), when I saw the first Grant Lee Buffalo album was receiving a new reissue (and its first-ever US vinyl release), I wanted it. Sure, it’s basically Shiva Burlesque with my favorite member gone, but knowing the family tree will facilitate more intelligent listening this time around.

 Next, both labels.

And here is a shot of the clear vinyl.

It may seem odd for this album to now be on Chrysalis Records, a ’70s label that’s been mysteriously revived in recent years, but Fuzzy’s original label Slash Records is long defunct, and another thing I learned today is the band was originally under contract in the ’90s with Chrysalis’s publishing wing; so, it makes sense. Also note this is attributed to a label spinoff called Chrysalis Catalogue.
