Dr. Ratio w/ Kavetham parents (x Aventurine)

warnings: none

a/n: after the intro (one or two paragraphs) it switches to Ratio’s pov dw (beginning with the first line of dialogue), also if you don’t like the Aventio ship- it is only mentioned after half of the writing. and in case you’re only here for Aventio- it begins halfway. tho I do recommend reading the full work for the best experience ^^

description: let's talk about Ratio's parents. I have been going on and leaving comments/hiding in hashtags here and there about how much I like the theory/fanon of Alhaitham and Kaveh being his parents (fluff, nostalgia)

now let us take into consideration that Teyvat does exist in the canon of Star Rail- and (if you've read/watched a few analysis) you might know that the planet on the loading screen is literally Teyvat- and now if you're questioning how is it separated from everything (read; not getting checked by the IPC) and similar- well.. it is locked off of any access. I'm truly not the right person to dwell into this, so do explore more about that if it has piqued your interest, and without further ado, these are my thoughts on our favorite canon couple in Genshin being Ratio's parents.

I can see Veritas coming back home (by some means) and his dads being just over the moon delighted to see him.

Kaveh would most likely ask him to sculpt something with him. Veritas, as it is portrayed, he sculpts mostly himself, and (in Kaveh’s voice lines he says sculpting is his hobby) Kaveh enjoys that as well. so, it makes perfect sense that Kaveh taught him that, just a little Veritas wobbling around and putting his hands into the grayish looking water, little hands shaping the sculpture- Kaveh giggling at the sight, gods Kaveh would look so beautiful in that setting, Alhaitham smiling fondly- he won’t touch the water or the statue- the texture ain’t right. so, when adult Veritas comes back home for a longer visit, of course Kaveh insists on his son sculpting something with him.

“how have you been, Veritas? it has been quiet without you rambling with yourself in the middle of the night about the problems of the world” Kaveh snickers and pours fresh ground coffee.

“I do hope you have been taking care of yourself, you shouldn’t let your job rule over your private life.” Alhaitham adds.

“I- I have been fine, and no my job isn’t suffocating me, dad.” He answers in that annoyed voice reminding his fathers of a teenager. “I never said suffocating.” Alhaitham quietly adds, his son revealing himself in his word choice. He doesn’t comment any further. The obvious is clear to all three men.

he goes to his room, fresh, clean as if he never left. his walls covered in sheets of paper with math equations, sketches of various buildings (even an attempt to sketch his father’s beautiful work of the palace of Alcazarzaray), quotes from those close to him in case memory ever betrayed him. the warm sunlight dripping into his room, the scent of spices, fresh coffee, herbal tea and warm cotton letting him know that he is home. nostalgia isn’t something he allows to rule over him, but in this moment, he is weak to it and indulges in the safety of his room. the rough texture of the sheets soothes him and all the puzzle pieces seem to fall in their place. he needed this. his dads, this vacation. he falls asleep with a small smile on his face that night, there’s perhaps no better place to be than home.

little kid Veritas was truly born into the right family with his intellect. perfect parents to take care of all of his “quirks”, and hunger for knowledge. and, Alhaitham and Kaveh are so proud of the man he grew up to be, “you know that love for math and numbers, is all you.” Alhaitham comments, not raising his gaze from the book in his hand, the early morning sun just barely grazing the room. Kaveh smiles and walks over to his partner, his lips leaving a soft kiss on the top of the younger man’s head, “he is equally you and me, Alhaitham.” both men smile for the next minute, Alhaitham’s free arm moving around Kaveh’s waist since he stood right next to where he sat. “except the hair, that he takes after his uncle.” Kaveh laughs melodically at that remark, “well, he crafted the hair genome-altering potion himself because we allowed him to ask Tighnari too many questions which he was all too happy to answer.” Alhaitham nods, “it fits him. the indigo. can’t even remember what it was before if I’m being honest.” Kaveh all but shrieks, turning his voice to a whisper to not wake their son, “that’s because he did it when he was 4.”

speaking of his ‘uncle’, Wanderer is someone Veritas was very fond of. or rather, is still very fond of. such a genius mind, a clever being with a puppet body, snarky, sarcastic- Veritas felt confused why he didn’t hang out even more often with his dads; they seemed like the perfect match of personalities and intellect. nonetheless, he did come over occasionally, and was always met with, something he now knows to cherish; the soft smile, the gentle voice and the cozy embrace of his uncle who likes tolerates children. and especially since he didn’t come over often, teenage Veritas would run away take a walk to go see him, he always looked young so that made him seem even more approachable to the young boy. he’d seek knowledge, and intelligent conversations- not that his fathers or his other uncles didn’t provide that. he simply needed someone outside of that roster. an outsider. well… half of an outsider, who can keep secrets. not that he’d have many secrets to share, Wanderer would gladly amuse the kid, happy with the respect the child gave him and intrigued by the questions he'd hear.

“alright kid, it is late, off you go.”

“it’s dark yes, you won’t see me off?”

“you can walk, can’t you? now go.” Wanderer zooms off into the shadows. Veritas developed confidence in his late night walks home and bravery, not knowing- until maybe in his adult life, that Wanderer always flew above him on his way home. making sure that he was safe. and every time, maybe out of respect, maybe out of a sense of duty, or perhaps… even… companionship? friendship? he’d slip a note under the door ‘the kid was with me, W’

“is uncle Wanderer still in Sumeru?” Veritas indulged between bites of pita pockets. he just did a workout session with Alhaitham, his dad is where he picked up the healthy habit of working out and staying active.

“he should be. I mean he didn’t move out to a different region if that’s what you mean” Kaveh answered with a nod in Alhaitham’s direction, to confirm or debunk what he said in case he had different information. Alhaitham shook his head, he didn’t know anything else, “he should be in Sumeru city.”

Veritas makes his way on the incline of the Divine Tree, last step, and, “ah well if it isn’t my favorite nephew?” the voice said sarcastically. a whoosh of wind and the short man with a large hat- obscuring anyone’s view, flew down.

Veritas smiled, “uncle. it has been very long. and the years have… treated you well” he chuckled, attempting to tease the older man.

Wanderer scoffed, “is that some poor attempt at a joke? perhaps, you should spend more time with the general on this vacation. brush up your…” vague gesture, “comedy.” he hovered and sat down on the stone wall.

“I doubt comedy is something I’m fit to pursue.”

they talked for hours that day. catching up and Veritas dumping, if at all possible, even more questions onto his uncle about life and existentialism. the sun started setting and Wanderer got up, ending their conversation as always before it got too late in the night. he gestured to Veritas to come closer, to which he bent lower- the height difference was painfully obvious, “you really grew so big.” Wanderer softly commented, Veritas could see the same kindness and endearment in his eyes that he saw as a child. Veritas always meant much more to Wanderer than he ever let on. to be called uncle, considered a family member, and not be asked to change himself. Wanderer appreciated Alhaitham and Kaveh, and his nephew is someone he’d die for. he pinched his cheek, “you take care of yourself, young man.” Wanderer smiled for a second and flew up out of sight. and, just like all those years ago, he flew above him out of sight, making sure he got safely home… after all, Veritas isn’t a vision carrier.

“puppets- puppets can’t cry, stop this” he’d mumble to himself as a few more teardrops fell on the parchment paper he pushed under the door.

‘the kid was with me’

second night he dreamed. Nahida smiled in this dream and waved “welcome home, Veritas”, once awake he sat up immediately out of breath.

stepping into the kitchen and there she sat.

“oh Veritas, it is so good to see you” she chirps, jumping off of her chair and walking over, he bends over to pick her up so she may properly hug him.

“auntie Nahida- I- I seem to have forgotten you knew the exact moment I laid my head on the pillow two nights ago that I got back home” Veritas would mumble, he didn’t realize that he would be this happy to see her.

“oh- Lesser lord Kusanali, you didn’t use the door- um- would you like some tea?”

“Lesser lord Kusanali, good morning, I’ll fetch the tea.” Alhaitham would add, making Kaveh sit down so he doesn’t stumble over something, his husband is always jittery when the archon comes to visit.

being close to Wanderer meant Nahida heard of him, and of course, she knew about Alhaitham’s and Kaveh’s son, hence upon visiting the kid often she became the auntie Nahida. Veritas grew up knowing the full truth, his dads aren’t the type to sugarcoat it or lie.

so in this embrace, Veritas realized how many questions he had for the tiny god in his arms. the god of wisdom. although, that might be impolite… he was silent for a bit.

Nahida giggled, “ask,” her legs swaying on the chair, “I know you must have so many more things you wish to know. especially with your age, doctor~” she giggled even more. and therefore it became a discussion, Veritas carefully forming his words, his dads listening to the conversation until they had to leave to lunch with friends. “come if you have time, your uncles Tighnari and Cyno will be there. they would be happy to see you.” Alhaitham adds as they leave the house.

on his way to the tavern he hears a woman yell his name, frozen in his step he turns and sees her running towards him. “Collei!” Veritas smiles, opening his arms and she jumps at him. he gives her a spin and tightly embraces her, “how have you been- you’re still amusingly short-“ he laughs, and she playfully punches him,

“is that how you greet your favorite cousin?”

“you mean my only cousin?”

“don’t get snarky with me- I got better at communication and will use sarcasm to my advantage!” Collei laughed happily as she answered. in his mind, she has always communicated well with him. he never saw any issues, only fondness for his older cousin.

they catch up on the street, his cousin is someone he cared about a lot in his youth. a peer who he didn’t shoo off, who didn’t dislike him, and who was and still is an amazing, accepting, intelligent person. one stayed and the other one moved away, yet their communication never failed, never changed, and the love always there for one another.

Cyno and Tighnari basically tackle him with love and affection. Cyno wraps him up in a blanket of dad jokes (not literal), while Veritas shares stories of foxians on the Xianzhou Luofu. it is a pleasant lunch filled with stories, and the tallest man at the table getting babied and treated as if he is fifteen years old again. somewhat bittersweet. Cyno insists they play a round of TCG, Veritas winning easily, “it is pure strategy, uncle Cyno” he tries to hide his smirk as he answers to a frowning general; Alhaitham adds quietly, “that’s my boy. well done.”

His uncle Cyno was the one to teach him Genius invocation TCG, during their trips to the desert they spent their evenings playing cards. “this is hardly fair, uncle. I keep losing” the small boy frowned.

“Veritas, when you are old enough, and more experienced you will, maybe, come close to winning.” Cyno answers, not showing mercy to the kid- he must learn the rules of the game properly, as he is teaching him survival in the desert. which, over the years of many trips, resulted in Veritas growing well acclimated to the weather conditions and scorching sun there, a good life skill to have.

on the other hand, he also grew accustomed to the moisture-heavy air and high heat of the rainforest. going on many camping trips with his uncle Tighnari. learning of different plants and creatures, gaining proficiency in biology before he even got to go to school. nights in the Gandharva Ville were also something he remembers fondly, his cousin, someone he holds in high regard, was always nice to him, pleasant, no matter his attitude and ‘adapting’ behavior. Collei never judged, they were, in a way, both patient with each other and led intellectually stimulating conversations for both parties. Veritas wouldn’t be the same man he is today if it weren’t for his peer.

Madam Faruzan is someone he didn’t expect to see in the house of Daena. he found her… interesting in his youth, but he moved past the interest when the well of knowledge for him dried up. on the other hand, Faruzan adored the little boy who was respectful and smart. they chatted for a few minutes and he quickly excused himself, otherwise, he’d have to put the bust on and the people of Sumeru have spent years not seeing such strange behavior and he knew it would attract even more attention. his younger dad’s voice would echo in his head, “it never matters if it makes others around you uncomfortable- you take care of yourself. if it helps you, if you feel better, then wear it.” and the scene of his dad placing the kid sized plaster head on his head played in Veritas’ mind. he feels incredibly lucky to have such amazing parents.

“how’s the traveler?”

“oh them? they found their sibling and I’m afraid I haven’t seen them in a bit. but they always come around, you know how they are. unpredictable~” Kaveh chuckles, and fondly recalls his friend with gold hair.

“or perhaps they changed bodies and personalities and embody someone you know outside of Teyvat.”

“daaad.” Veritas exhaled, “your attempts at humor get more annoying with years” he rolled his eyes at Alhaitham.

in a suggestive voice he joked a bit more, “maybe now they are less polite, maybe they even have- gray hair like I do.”

for a second the image of the Trailblazer flashed before his eyes but he dismissed it, “daad please can you contain yourself. I would appreciate it. those books on comedy did you no good,” his head turned to Kaveh, “dad why did you buy him that?”

“for pure shits and giggles, my dear boy.” Kaveh answered with a grin.

one can be as put together as they want and as old as they can be, but once one is home… we all turn back into children.

there was a knock on the door, Kaveh got up to open it, “good morning, yes?”

“ah hello, is doctor Ratio here- his device seems to not be working on Teyvat it seems so err…”

“Veritas it’s for you!” he said louder and turned back to face the man in front of him, “and you are?”

“dad-“ he gently pushed Kaveh aside, “you’re too flashy- get inside Aventurine!” he hissed in a hushed tone.

Veritas stands with his hand on his forehead, shaking his head gently. Kaveh seems amused with a smile on his face and sits down on the couch, next to the sofa armchair where Alhaitham made himself sit in no time. Kaveh can tell by the look in his husband’s eyes that he is entertained.

the young man, which their son addressed as a translucent quartz… Aventurine took a step towards Veritas. “hey- doc- I didn’t mean to- maybe I should’ve read some stuff about the planet before jumping-“

“maybe?” the tone of voice was obviously a displeased one, even raising in tone with a sharp glare. Veritas inhaled and exhaled. like a child doing a play he turned to face his parents, “dads, this is Kakavasha,” Aventurine did a small wave, “he is an occasional work partner of mine and I suppose that is why he came here.” he turned to him and raised an eyebrow.

“well, yes, your phone- I mean device wasn’t working- actually nothing came up- I grew worried,” his voice turned into a whisper, “you know with this planet being so gatekept and outside of the IPC’s or the Aeons’ control so…”

“worried?” Veritas asked. Kaveh and Alhaitham were only missing popcorn, this has been the most entertaining thing they have watched in years. going all the way back to when they visited Fontaine and saw a wonderful drama performance.

“yes,” the blond man answered.

“let’s-“ Kaveh cleared his throat, “I’m Kaveh, Veritas’ father, this is my husband Alhaitham. why don’t you stay a bit- no need to rush off to… wherever you zapped from, hm?” he smiled.

“this, being the isolated area you claim, surely two travels in one day are not good, hm? stay the night. we will make room.” Alhaitham nodded.

and oh, Aventurine could read them in a second, street smarts this guy. he saw every single detail of the two men and how it translated into Veritas. “I’d hate to be a bother- but I’m clever enough to know you two would insist.” Aventurine smiles. Alhaitham and Kaveh hold back any laughs bubbling up their throats from giddiness. for them two, a pinning couple such as themselves, something as this short interaction between Aventurine and Veritas was as obvious as Cyno being the general Mahamatra. visible from the top of the Divine Tree. the only question was, where do they stand together?

“I. you’re right, but I don’t think it is necessary-“ Veritas begins only to be cut off by Kaveh.

“you’re forgetting yourself- didn’t you say he was flashy? you practically dragged him inside.”

Veritas cursed himself mentally, this was truly not what he had in plan. “fine. follow along, dear gambler.” he walked down the hallway and Aventurine followed quickly along.

Kaveh looked at Alhaitham with wide eyes and held back the urge to bite down on a pillow. “I will fucking scream, our son, OUR SON, got bitches?”  “was that real? that just happened, yes?”

Alhaitham was speechless in any verbal form, but his facial expression was priceless. “dear. Archons. thank you lesser lord Kusanali for blessing our boy.” Alhaitham hoped their son would never be lonely… and over the years it truly did turn him to even hope for the archons to show mercy upon him. “he also isn’t an idiot” Alhaitham continued.

“mhm, quite a beautifully well-mannered young man along with that,” Kaveh added.

inside his room, “why- this was truly unnecessary- my dads will now-“

“doc, calm down your parents are great- is this where I’ll stay?”

“this is my room!” he narrowed his eyes, Aventurine nodded and stayed quiet, “yes… this is where you’ll stay. don’t get… cocky about it”

“oh please doc, it isn’t the first time we share a bed.”

“change into something Sumeru appropriate if you wish to leave this house at any time during your stay.” Veritas ponders for a moment, “my clothes are too big and so are any of my dads- uncle Cyno is shorter than you so that’s a no, uncle Tighnari has a tail so that’s also a no, uncle Wanderer wears Inazuma-Sumeru styled clothes and also too small- I will have to buy.” he sighs after his short analysis.

“money is never the problem- credits are something I have a lot of and you know that- why?”

“they use mora here, not credits.”

Aventurine falls quiet, a world with no credits… a land of opportunity! he shall gain mora!

“no. don’t you gamble- the rules here are different-“ knock, knock.

“Veritas, will you go buy Kakavasha clothes or shall I sew something of some old pieces?” Kaveh asked against the closed door.

“I- dad can you go buy- we need to talk- I can’t at this moment.”

“yeah, I’ll go.” silence, he didn’t move away yet. “I’ll take your father with me.”

a distant muffled voice answered, “I don’t like shopping for clothes, Kaveh.” “Shush Alhaitham we are going.”

“I doubt your worry was justified- you knew you couldn’t contact me here”

“your parents seem nice. and now I’m here, so let us not dwell on would’ve, could’ve, should’ve hm?”

Veritas sighs. they exchange a few more words and he leaves for dinner with Collei previously arranged.

the sun is setting when he gets back, Aventurine got nicely acquainted with his parents and… well, Veritas is standing frozen at the entrance door. Aventurine is wearing white Sumeru style clothes, with pretty gold accents and splashes of purple and cyan. there has never been a lovelier man than him, your beauty leaves me speechless. He clears his throat, “now that you look appropriate, allow me to take you on a walk, yes?” to which the blond man obliges and they leave the house.

absentmindedly he talks of the architecture and how people live in Sumeru city. they arrive at a point that oversees the vast area towards Port Ormos and they stand there in silence for a few moments.

“the clothes are very comfortable, I hope I’m wearing them well,” Aventurine says with a big smile.

“you look…” beautiful, ravishing, heavenly, out of this world, take my hand in marriage, “…you wear them well, yes” Veritas cuts his thoughts off.

“c’mon doc, we are on your home planet, in your city. no one knows us here- at least not as the cornerstone of the Aeon of preservation and the member of the Intelligentsia guild. we can relax.”

Veritas rolls his shoulders and takes a deep breath. “you’re right. … you look… beautiful. I… I bought you something- it was meant to be a gift when I got back but… here” he hands him a small blue velvet box. Veritas doubts Aventurine ever enjoys wearing jewelry, not with the way he quickly strips himself off of his rings, the watch, and necklace the moment he gets home. Aventurine opens the box and tilts his head in thought, “this is…?”

“a hairpiece. sort of like mine. a pin. I’m sure you understand.” Veritas nods to himself. Aventurine hands him the pin, a dark blue-golden piece displaying a certain mushroom. “put it on me.” Veritas’ eyes shift to the shorter man, if he wasn’t such a calm person his hands would shake in this moment. his fingers gently grip the pin and place it on the soft blond hair.

“good?”

“perfect. I chose well.” Veritas cannot hide how flustered he is at that moment despite his cold demeanor when his cheeks show a shade of pink.

“Doctor… Veritas. I would like to enjoy this vacation- with you. us, together, no one to say anything, may we… relax?” Aventurine says softly, his hand shyly coming to hold Veritas’ making him look at the man. “the view is beautiful from here, the sunset, colors, everything in warm colors, look.” he says, Aventurine shifts his gaze and Veritas keeps looking at him. he raises their joined hands and kisses his knuckles, “you mean everything to me” he whispers.

Aventurine smiles, returning his gaze to him. Veritas continues in a soft voice, “you wear the clothes well. it is… such a vision to see you in the clothing of my world. to see you standing next to me on the streets I grew up on, to see you meet my parents… also I have planned to stay for quite a while so expect to be here for at least a month or travel back to the ship.”

“I think I might stay for a few days. I like the sight of you here, you seem much more relaxed than you usually are, Doc. it’s like you feel safer here. and given how many dangerous specimens are on this planet I am surprised by that fact.” Aventurine gives his hand a small squeeze. “I’d like to get to know your family.” there’s an underlying sadness he sees in the shorter man’s eyes, perhaps the yearning for a safe family of his own.

“I have a big family, uncles, and aunts, a cousin… I’d be happy to introduce you.”

“friends? you didn’t say friends.”

“ah… those. family is what I have here. and you.” Veritas pushes the thoughts of his childhood away, friends… not something he had a big privilege of experiencing. He always preferred his uncles, aunts, truly the only real friend he ever had was Collei. perhaps the other kids weren’t even worth it.

the walk ends with them gazing at the sunset, holding hands.

at night they share his bed, his childhood bed. in the privacy of his home he feels safe enough to lean his face closer and gently kiss him. his lips pressing onto Aventurine’s with a mumble of good night. It feels surreal… his partner with him, in his arms, in his home. Aventurine that night dreams of a small white-haired person who welcomes him to Sumeru and says she is happy to meet him. in the morning when he shares the dream, between kisses Veritas lays along his jawline, the doctor stops to inform him that that was the Dendro archon, which results in a gasping Aventurine and a longer time in bed explaining the function of gods and deities in this world.

Veritas walks into the kitchen, following the scent of Sabz meat stew. his parents are in the study so he freely wraps his arms around Aventurine and lowers his head into the crook of his neck. “smells good.”

“mhm, your dad gave me the recipe- I thought I’d try it out. taste it!” Aventurine turns a bit in his arms, lips pursed blowing on the wooden spoon. it tastes good, melts on the tongue, his eyes widen and it is all the confirmation Aventurine needs. Veritas kisses his temple, “I’m so happy you’re here, Kakavasha.”

steps on the wooden floor knock him out of his bubble, his cheeks blush- being physical with his partner isn’t something he wants his parents to see. he puts the plaster head on and sits down. luckily in this household, it is perfectly normal to self-regulate in such a way. he can count on both hands just how many times he saw his dad without the noise-canceling pieces he uses. half of those were when he was sleeping, he remembers as a kid when he’d run to their bedroom, in tears from a nightmare- in mere seconds he’d have the devices on his head- be it Kaveh putting them on or he himself getting them on. after which they would both turn to comfort the small boy. any other time, was his dads quietly chatting on the sofa, and upon his arrival his younger dad would waste no time to put them on. two voices being too much. Alhaitham reassured him plenty of times so he doesn’t feel hurt by it, especially now, that he is old enough to understand; the only person he can tolerate, he enjoys listening fully to (not all the time tho) is Kaveh. to prove the case further, as a teenager he found out that his dad’s device has a mode which makes sure that his older dad’s voice always pushes through noise cancellation. true love at its finest. and what a hopeless romantic his dad is to do so and feel like that. the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. he does wear his bust much less when he is around Kakavasha.

and now not even the plaster head can hide it when he tilts his head on his hand and stares at the blond man. Alhaitham smirks, he sees through it oh so easily, “do you need any help, Kakavasha? if not, Kaveh and I are leaving to go to the Akademiya, update our retirement plans and so on. although, I’m sure my son can help out if the need arises.”

“I am doing fine so far, thank you sir”

“no need for sir, Alhaitham is fine.”

“I’d feel impolite to address my partner’s parents like that,” he speaks out loud before thinking. he stops stirring the food, when did he- how- when did he start feeling so safe that he stopped overthinking as much? Alhaitham nods with a barely noticeable smile and turns to leave the kitchen. “don’t burn the house down, you two.”

Veritas plants his face into his palms, covering the plaster head even more. Kakavasha turns around to face him when the doors close. “hah, um… sorry?”

Veritas gently takes his plaster head off with a small sigh, his cheeks are colored a light shade of pink, and eyes looking elsewhere, “it happens. I’d love to think my dad took your ‘partner’ in a business terminology, but… nobody in this household is that idiotic. and… I doubt we were any less than obvious, especially to a special case such as my parents.”

“special case?” Kakavasha hangs onto his words.

“some other time I’ll tell you about their situation- or perhaps you may ask them yourself. watch the food, dear.” Veritas gestures with his chin to the cooking pot.

Kakavasha does that indeed, chatting along with Alhaitham and Kaveh, the men more than happy to share their story- and get to know their son’s partner.

“I was told I might find you here,” he says in a soft voice, sitting next to the tall man.

Veritas raises his head from his notes. he is sitting at a large table in the house of Daena, surrounded by books, papers and a few pens. “who told you? saying goodbye is never easy. when being home is nice, pleasant- it makes it much harder. Aventurine left a week or so ago, and went back in the outer orbit of the planet. Veritas spent more time with his close family, having more shared meals and spending his early mornings in the Akademiya’s library, even going so far to visit the actual Temple of silence.

Kaveh’s arms are holding him tightly in an embrace, his voice slightly shaky, but he is trying not to let it show, “I will miss you so much, my dear boy. please stay safe, don’t get into unnecessary trouble, eat a lot, take care of yourself and you can always come home if it gets tiring. or just- one day come home to retire, maybe? and bring that boy with you, your father and I like him, he is welcome any time.”

Alhaitham’s strong arms hug him with a few pats on the back, in a monotone voice, which Veritas recognizes as warmth, he softly speaks, “I stand behind everything your dad already said. do take care of yourself, we will miss you a lot.”

“I don’t want to cry.” Veritas whispers, standing in front of his parents, Kaveh inhales sharply holding back his own tears, Alhaitham tightly holds his hand, his jaw clenched as he also tries not to grow too upset. “we shouldn’t cry,” the retired scribe says, “it isn’t good to say goodbye in tears, we will see each other again. we are immensely happy you came to see us, Veritas. I love you- we both love you, and safe travels.” he ends it with a nod, Kaveh nods as well.

“I love you too” Veritas whispers back, he jumps into both of them, hugging them one more time. he steps back, waves and, with the usage of technology unnatural to Teyvat, he is gone. Zapped away into the orbit.

“I miss him already.” Kaveh doesn’t cry as much as he thought he would when their son leaves.

“Veritas is out there doing the best he can for himself, and he isn’t alone. we both know how much it matters that he isn’t alone.” Alhaitham’s eyes appear sad despite his words. the men sit on the couch cuddled in each other’s arms. “you’re right… he isn’t alone.”

Ratio, back on the ship, eyes filled with tears threatening to drop meet the watercolor ones of his partner. “I- I… I miss them already, Kakavasha.” Aventurine walks over to hug him, his hand moving in circles on his back. “I’ve got you. I’ve got you.”

after a few minutes, Aventurine quietly says, “we will visit them again. we can come over for my birthday? I… really enjoyed being surrounded by family. maybe you’d let me meet more of them this time, yes?”

Veritas smiles, tears dried up, he really has a way of bringing his mood up. “of course, we will visit for your birthday then.”

“I look forward to calling them my family like you do,” Aventurine adds with an all-too-familiar smile.

“is that-“ Ratio tilts his head, “is that some backward way of proposing?”

Aventurine chuckles, shaking his hands, “nope. not yet. there’s time for us to do… that”

Ratio smirks, with an exhale he leans his head on the shorter man’s shoulder, “thank you… for coming along. I’m glad you met them.”

Aventurine silently smiles and kisses his cheek. perhaps the next time they come around they will make certain vows.

Exposing SVSSS Fanon: 21/∞

SHEN YUAN'S ORIGINAL BODY LOOKED VERY SIMILAR TO SHEN QINGQIU'S

Rating: FANON - CONFLICTING

A widely accepted potrayal in fanworks is that Shen Yuan and Shen Jiu have a similar enough appearance to appear as if they were the same person, or at least closely related to one another. While this depiction provides for an exploration of a lot of interesting and entertaining plots, it actually contradicts the novel's text.

When Shen (Yuan) Qingqiu first examines his appearance after transmigrating, he notes the following:

It was a fine-featured face with pitch-black eyes and brows, thin nose and lips, and a most scholarly air. Combined with a slender body and long legs, he could more or less be considered beautiful. Though his real age was unclear, this was a cultivation novel: Shen Qingqiu had achieved Mid Core Formation, which meant he’d perfectly preserved his youthful appearance. He was certainly many times better-looking than Shen Yuan’s headcanon for him. (7 Seas, Ch. 1)

Notably, there is no comparison in this original assessment to Shen Yuan's original body. It would be expected that when one transmigrates into a different body with no relation to their own, the new body wouldn't resemble their original one that much, and that it would be somewhat surprising and notable if it did. Therefore, it could be argued that because Shen Qingqiu does not note any resemblance at this point, that there is little to no resemblance to be seen. However, it's also possible that he simply wasn't thinking too much about his former appearance at this time, and didn't make any comparisons because of that.

More telling, however, is the description of the body he created with the Sun Moon Dew Flower Mushroom:

The human cast they used had been based on his former appearance as Shen Yuan. It didn’t compare to Shen Qingqiu’s immortal poise, but it wasn’t a bad mortal container. It just had a bit of a certain listlessness—the listlessness of a worthless pretty boy idling his life away. But because he’d used some of his blood while cultivating the Dew Mushroom, a touch of foreign influence was inevitable. When Shen Qingqiu tumbled to the side of a creek and used a sharp mountain rock to scrape away his whiskers for a look, his new face was still three or four parts of ten similar to Shen Qingqiu’s. Without a word, he re-pasted the whiskers onto his face. (7 Seas, Ch. 9)

Here it is clearly noted that the mushroom body's resemblance to Shen Qingqiu is due to the influence of Shen Qingqiu using his current body's blood to cultivate it. Even then, it is only a 30-40% resemblance, which is far from identical. Without that influence, the mushroom body, and thus Shen Yuan's original body, would have likely barely resembled Shen Qingqiu's at all.

Furthermore, when Sha Hualing captures Shen Qingqiu to use as a vessel for Luo Binghe's cultivation, she is already aware that Luo Binghe specifically does not want to use cultivators who resembled Shen Qingqiu.

Who could have known that the vessel she had settled on this time would also coincidentally share some similarities with that fucking Shen Qingqiu’s eyes and brows! This was definitely another violation of Luo Binghe’s major taboo! (7 Seas, Ch. 10)

The resemblance between Shen Qingqiu and the mushroom body was slight enough that Sha Hualing didn't notice the resemblance on first glance-- only Luo Binghe, who had spent much more time with Shen Qingqiu, was able to catch it.

Worth noting here as well is the phrase "eyes and brows." In Chinese, this is 眉眼， and while literally it does mean "eyes and brows," 眉眼 also refers to physical appearance in general. So this may describe the specific features where the mushroom body is similar to Shen Qingqiu's, but it is equally likely (and this is how I read it) that it does not refer to specifically his eyes and brows but rather that there was just some similarity in his looks.

In conclusion, it can be said that canonically, the original body of Shen Yuan didn't really look like Shen Qingqiu at all, despite popular depiction. Of course, if the premise of a fanwork revolves around that physical similarity-- for example, if Shen Yuan and Shen Jiu were being portrayed as identical twins-- then just like any other aspect of canon, this one can also be bent and altered in order to fit the story being told. Nonetheless, it is good to remember that this depiction still contradicts canon.

One thing that I hate is the fanon characterization of James Potter specifically by Marauders fans who dislike Snape. Like they turn him into this sweet angel who was kind to everybody and never did anything wrong and he never got angry or showed any human emotion besides happiness. But that legitimately would never happen and the biggest proof of that is the fact that he’s an Aries. I know this because I’M an Aries and I was literally born just one day after him. I literally calculated what his birth chart would have been if he was real and had been born in England on March 27th 1960. His sun and moon signs are both Aries and his rising sign his Sagittarius, making him a TRIPLE fire sign. My sun sign is Aries and my moon and rising signs are both Sagittarius, which means I am also a triple fire sign with the EXACT SAME two fire signs in my top three as James. So I can quite literally attest to the fact that James could never be just sunshine and rainbows and would most like have anger issues just like me BECAUSE WE ARE SO SIMILAR (minus being a bully)!! Like when I say I am James and James is me I mean it and it’s literally impossible for someone to say James is this perfect figure of nobility and kindness because one, canonically he isn’t, and TWO his charts say otherwise. Like Marauders fans who hate Snape (because we all know people who like both Snape and the Marauders have the best characterizations of both) try so hard to deny that James could’ve ever been more complex than just a simple sweetheart golden boy when the proof is LITERALLY IN THE PUDDING!! LIKE OPEN YOUR EYES PEOPLE!!

TSAMS Ships I Like and Why

These are just my personal views about TSAMS ships that I like, and why I like them. I would like to preface that I don’t think any of these will be canon, I just personally like the ship dynamics. Also, they are in no particular order.

1.) Monty/Earth/Eclipse

Vee-polyamory. Earth would be the hinge, and Earth and Eclipse have a queerplatonic relationship. It is a very big comfort ship for me. I do feel like Monty and Eclipse could be friend if they got over their issues, with each other and themselves. Their dynamic is basically the scary dog privileges trend. It may never be canon, but it’s currently my favorite.

2.) Lunar/Gemini

Honestly, I do genuinely think it could work out. Everything went wrong in canon around the time they died to get together, but this is fanon so I say it works. Another vee poly style relationship with Lunar as the hinge. It been shown a decent amount that Lunar does work well with both Castor and Pollux, and they all have similar vibes. Lunar is able to calm down and just talk with Castor about things, and can also match Pollux’s really high energy. They may have a rough time communicating with each other, but I think if they worked on that it would be a really cute relationship.

3.) Solar/Ruin

Yes, this is a tragic romance, but that is literally the whole reason I like it. Listen, these two are both sassy mfers, and would just play off each other really well. They’re the kind of couple to engage in parallel play all the time just because they like being near one another. They also just have a lot in common about coming from a dying world and being pretty hated by everyone in their respective dimensions. Ruin knowing what he was doing was going to end up killing Solar is devastating. It’s an interesting couple in the fact that is a doomed romance from the start, and Ruin knows that.

4.) Sun/Foxy

Someone I follow mentioned KidsCove as being a queerplatonic relationships and it’s changed my whole perspective on this ship. Yes. 100%. I love the idea of this. I think the whole reason Kids isn’t canonical (in universe) is that the characters seems to have a very specific views on what relationships are and how they’re supposed to look. I think if someone explained to them that you don’t have to be restricted to those things, they might be more open to the idea. Plus, like, Sun does a pretty good job handling FC, and I feel like Foxy would enjoy having someone around who can help and doesn’t complain about his child being too much. (Sadly, TSAMS has made it pretty clear that, canonically, Sun and Foxy both seem to be straight.)

5.) Canon/OC or Self Insert

Any sort of OC or Self Shipping is great, I love seeing that content. As long as it’s not Moon or the children characters, we’re chill. I myself have an Eclipse/Self Insert AU and have been low key cooking up something for a Sun/OC. Do whatever, cringe culture is dead.

I'm quite lukewarm on Rei & Mina from Sailor Moon, maybe reflecting that I wasn't super into the manga & only watched some of the live action stuff but still.

Reylo, obviously. Other Star Wars would be Obi-Wan/anyone really, and also the fact people actually treat Anakin and Padme as romantic or like they could have a functional relationship scares me.

If we do a quick drive-by on ATLA, I really don't get why Azula & Aang became so popular, or Zuko & Katara. Or more, the best explanations I have for them still leave me going :/ at best. So there's that.

In Warcraft we have Thrall & Jaina, which is just 100% a case of, "Wow, they sure are standing next to each other" as far as ships go. Also for WOW is Jaina & Sylvanas, I only get it aesthetically, kinda.

Felix & Kagami from ML has me like ???? I didn't watch past S3 though so ??? Also that people treat Gabirel & Emile or Gabriel & Nathalie as like.. healthy is just... What!? I get the ships, I don't get the fanon spin on them.

In Dragon Ball, this one also draws targeting fire, but I never really got Vegeta & Bulma, which is canon I know, but still. A fling is one thing but an actual relationship just leaves me head-scratching. Also not sure if this is still the case, but I recall Gohan & Piccolo as being weirdly popular back in the olden days, and like, what!?

In DC, oh boy, gonna piss some people off with this one, but:

Bruce & any long term relationship, I don't care if its Selina, Talia, Clark, or Diana, or Harvey. This is not a man who can commit to another human being, because he's committed himself to staling the utterly uninterested Gotham City. Anything claiming otherwise is positively incomprehensible to me.

Also I don't grasp why Dick & Babs is so popular, or Tim & Steph, or Tim & Jason. The former has some history, but it so often feels like crow-barring two former high school crushes who have moved on together against their will. The latter is just like,... No, just no.

Within RWBY, if we are strictly going by popular pairs then I really don't get Weiss & Jaune, or Ruby & Jaune. I'm not even talking about like, V2 behavior or whatever, they've all grown, but I don't see how they've grown in a way that leads to these being popular ships. I had a similar stance on Blake & Sun when it was a major player; like attraction can be there without me thinking it works as a ship.

Also Ironwood & Glynda is just like... She could not be more utterly not into him if she tried, why are you people forcing it? Same with Winter & Qrow, their dynamic doesn't even have a fun rivals to lovers vibe to it.

Also as I believe you mentioned but Oscar & Ruby doesn't click with me. Again, I can sort of follow the logic, but I always end up at, "Why is this what you want?" Because to get to it, at least when it comes to the more intense advocates, it usually involved ripping out all the interesting stuff from their dynamic and characters for hurt comfort fic material.

You're gonna kill me.

But I have similar feelings about Ruby & Penny. I can see it more than Oscar & Ruby, but at the same time I just... It doesn't click with me and most stuff I see of it removes all the interesting character drama and dynamics so I get bored outside of a purely aesthetic appreciation level.

Sort of an interesting spin on this, I kind of tricked myself into enjoying a ship I previously didn't like through fandom.

Specifically when writing a Sailor Moon fanfic, I tweaked Usagi & Mamoru's dynamic to be a bit more like their mutual antagonism from the early anime, but cos both were on equal footing, I found their banter really enjoyable to write & started vibing with it.

Always Yamcha, forever Yamcha, my poor sweet victim of character desolation, Yamcha!

He's introduced in the comedic part of the series with this premise being that he's a powerful and dangerous bandit, who is chronically shy around girls and is deeply romantic, wanting a family.

He's shown to be a skilled fighter who developed powerful techniques on his own with zero training. He knows tons of martial arts lore, was a nice mix of sensible but brave and basically Goku's big brother.

But he kept getting used as the WORF and then after being killed via kamakaze after stepping up to protect his younger friend from such a fate, he is memed to death by the fandom. & is later characterized as a cheater despite having been nothing but loyal to Bulma across the series. Has his desire for a married life & family surgically removed & given to Krillin, & basically gets treated like trash for the rest of time.

Outside of DB...

Pretty much every character, creature or faction I find interesting in Warcraft is hated or regarded with indifference so that's fun XD

As to specific characters from other series:

Chloe of ML, people hating on an already hated in universe 14 year old whose neglectful, corrupt father left her to be raised by he staff in a room that makes a dentist surgery look homey & who otherwise only taught her the worst lessons imaginable. Along with an emotionally and verbally abusive mother & who was actively groomed by the main villain of the series who has known her since she was a child are just... For fucks sake she's 14.

Lila of ML, she's a messy, confusing ass character cos it seems the writers don't have a solid idea for her. But like, within the first three seasons at least, she's still a 14 year old who has two adults with cameras plated in her room manipulating and controlling her.

Azula of ATLA, another 14 year old who was treat like shit by the adults in her family. She's a weapon to her father, a monster by birth to her mother, "Crazy" to an allegedly kind old uncle who has killed infinitely more people than her & only felt bad when it impacted him. Seriously, fuck all those doing Azula hate. She's a better villain than Ozia, a more merciful and skilled general than Iroh, and seems to have at least some actual loyalty to her family unlike Ursa who only cared about Zuko.

Mai of ATLA, People hate her for her dead pan affect and the fact she's not cradling Zuko's sof lil baby head, and or between him & the ship for him they like. Fuck off again, Mai's fun.

Cinder of RWBY, villains are meant to do bad things. Villains like Cinder do not appreciate being blackmailed. Villains like Cinder don't appreciate people who know their secrets, like using the Lamp, being around to hold it over her head later. She's not stupid, some people just lack media literacy.

Harriet of RWBY, while I get that she's not super popular, I tend to find the level of vitriol she gets uncomfortable at best. Like, it often feels less like people not getting the characters role & more like, some people running will with the chance to be unrelentingly hostile towards a fictional black woman. Elm gets some of this but is more often forgotten.

Talia of DC, there is so much racism both in canon and fanon and its heartbreaking.

i make fun of yams for making frankly the majority of the 104th and the warrior unit aries and leo suns, including Jean and Reiner (would just say "fire signs," but he doesn't seem to gravitate toward sagittarius birthdays). but just because this cast is lousy with the same sun sign doesn't mean they're identical to their comrades! the differences (and friction of similarity) come from everyone's rising sign, which contextualizes the sun for the individual.

this project requires three bold executive decisions: (1) birth times, (2) birth years as proxy for 832-35, and (3) birth location as proxy for liberio and paradis.

birth times, to give us their rising signs. this makes up the majority of this post. besides the above reason, sun + ascendant also tells us if the person was born in the day or night since the ascendant is the sign on the eastern horizon at time of birth. someone born at/around sunrise has the same sun and rising sign, for example.

851 in AoT = 1853 in our world. what about every other planet? astrology is not like MBTI; we don't plug in values willy nilly (my killjoy pet peeve? ppl hc'ing moon signs that are physically, astronomically impossible; moon phases and thus moon signs describe sun-moon aspects). i have to pick a real-world ephemeris range in order to limit my freedom of choice to just rising signs. to advance my own indulgent new historicist reading, i'm looking at ephemerides from the 1830s to fill in the rest of these charts, matching the survey corps repo'ing the marleyan scouting ship to the arrival of the perry expedition in the ryukyu islands.

kinda crazy decision here, but liberio = macau, the walls = osaka. the world of AoT is ours upside-down, sure, but the opposite latitude of madagascar is like, saudi arabia, which i don't think this matches because of climate, and iseyama pretty clearly conceives of paradis with more than two northern hemisphere seasons (the leaves on the tree on the hill). these city choices betray my own research interests, but the antagonism between paradis and marley across a narrow sea feels more like japan vs like all of east asia (including russia) throughout history, but especially the late 19th and early 20th centuries. physically, paradis' northeastern position next to marley (longitude) matters a lot. it's why the birth charts of ppl from northern europe are so weird if you use quadrant house systems.

right away, the 1830s give us the outer/generational planets, where Reiner's 2-3 years seniority does make difference for uranus, the fastest-moving outer: they share pluto in aries and neptune in capricorn, but Reiner's uranus is in aquarius and Jean's is in pisces. i don't rly use these unless they make close contact w inner planets though

specific to reijean / what is fanon at this point

Jean's birth year is pretty unambiguous to me with him and Eren as foils: 835, or 1837.

i assume the cadet corps disbands and assembles each spring. winter happens between the reclamation of wall maria and the SC reaching the sea, which puts the events of seasons 1-2 and s3p1 around april or may, and the return to shiganshina arc in august or september. meaning, Jean and Eren just turned 15.

if Reiner is 17 when the 104th disbanded, he's actually two years and four months older than Jean and Eren; for most of the year (august through march), he seems three years older!! that means he spends his 18th birthday w fellow bday boy Zeke, plus Pieck on aug. 4 :) granted they probably spent that time planning to kill the whole SC, but i like to think Bertie threw them a party :)

birth time / rising sign considerations

do they have a day or night vibe? deadass. briefly, each light "leads" a sect of planets that are strengthened if their leader is in charge. sun = jupiter and saturn and moon = venus and mars; mercury has no allegiance, can go either way (because of mythology; mercury/hermes has to traverse every realm as a messenger). this mitigates "bad" placements or sabotages "good" ones.

also vibe-based: each of the seven classical planets (inner sailor senshi + saturn) traditionally rules two signs, while the moon rules cancer and the sun rules leo. this is often used phrenologically (for racism), but seeing as these men are lines and iseyama speaks about designing them, i think it is okay.

where is person A's sun in person B's chart? and vice versa, and same applies for rising signs and their rulers. for relationships, astrologers sometimes use this to indicate where/how/when partners meet each other.

both benefics (nice planets that "bring good fortune") are undignified, or in signs that do not serve them; the signs are enemy territory. could you say that's a grand metaphor for RBA on paradis, or liberio on marley? perhaps. for Reiner, jupiter is in gemini (detrimented, and conjoined with mars) and venus is in virgo (fallen). both of these are mercury-ruled signs; aka that flighty little bitch of a planet with questionable loyalties. hmmmmm!!!

right away, he's one of the most diurnal 🌞 men i've ever seen. yams said in some guidebook that he drew him to look like someone "destined for great things," or something to that effect... and probably like, mere months later, he published chapter 97. so yams is a sicko who loves irony. Reiner is a golden, heroic figure until he isn't, like fuckin HELOS i guess, or apollo...

day birth limits our range to leo through capricorn, with some wiggle room in the first few degrees of aquarius; his chart ruler can be literally any option but the moon

because of his unfortunate benefics and the burden of identity, my favorites are: taurus, libra, sag, or leo rising, so he's ruled by either venus, jupiter, or the sun.

he has an aries stellium (a cluster of planets all in the same sign), which Eren doesn't—he's actually more aries than Eren, who is "secretly" very piscean. Jean's sun (exalted), mercury, venus (detriment), and pluto are all here.

for Jean, the sun is conjoined pluto within 2 degrees (makes us twinsies; i have a sun-pluto square).

Jean's venus is opposite Reiner's saturn: rich and dramatic, arguably negative, but i think it can be good for them because of their different conditions in each chart. Jean's venus hates being in aries, and looks across the way to libra, where it wants to be, where Reiner's saturn is. it's like Reiner can pull out Jean's ooey gooey feelings that are usually obscured by aries, or come out as just carnal aggression. saturn can be patient with all of that, and i think Reiner finds it cute. venus in aries is very fwb/didn't-know-we-were-dating; saturn in libra is more quiet and reliable, to a point—he will get so frustrated!

they both have jupiter-mars conjunctions that are sextile to one another; they're hot separately and together???? i seriously led with japanese history for picking their fake birth years, i didn't know the sky would say they are hot and have great sex. more than that, a sextile is actually... pretty chill and comfortable? they just click, it's more about being in sync, physically (mars) and philosophically (jupiter).

i clearly like giving Reiner cottagecore dreams, a small and warm life; as a boy he wanted a nuclear family, and even in the dregs of his mental health, he clung on for the warrior kids. his actual ambitions are just caring and maybe, even more ambitiously, being cared for, and I think that is true to him, not just his Marcel persona.

the 12th house is miserable!! love it there. my more nuanced explanation is it's kind of floating above it all, seeing the relativity of everything, which can feel like disillusionment or liberation or both: Paradis seriously upset his understanding of the world.

Venus doesn't like Virgo/Virgo doesn't care for Venus because there is something quite detached, sterile about Virgo. Virgo is, for Reiner, years of propaganda, habit, "warrior" versus "soldier," all watchwords and reminders at catastrophic odds with his feelings of warmth and acceptance in the 104th—those syrupy, hard-to-name Venus matters that Virgo cannot tolerate.

in Reiner's chart, Taurus, Venus' other domain, is his 8th house: another "dark" house, death and inheritance, guilt, enemies. it also.... is where Jean's moon is.

his Venus squares his Moon, which is a pretty double edged sword. there's something very needy and insecure about these two soft planets making a harsh angle, which, imo, leads Reiner to deeply unhealthy choices to win affection, approval, security—from his parents, from the nation of Marley, from Bertolt and Annie after Marcel's death, etc.

Jean's growth from a "selfish bastard who only thinks of himself" is, astrologically, a broadening of what community/11th house matters mean to him. first, it is just himself: getting into the MPs at all costs, Saturn confused in a night chart. but then in trost, in the field, he leads for the first time: being selfish for the sake of people who trust him, using the deaths of others for his and his squad's survival. we see this again in the 57th expedition: he clearly sees his, Reiner, and Armin's role as giving up their own lives for the success of the Survey Corps. and his scope of concern gets bigger and bigger: the future of "humanity" in the walls in the uprising arc, and finally all of humanity.

also in the uprising arc, especially in the manga, I see his hesitation to kill as an 11th house morality, sure, part of humanity's charter, but I also deeply DEEPLY love the slow burn trust between Levi and his new squad: Jean kind of deputizes himself between springles and scary Levi himself. this also reminds me of Jean yapping at Armin about mutinying Erwin during the 57th expedition. it's pragmatism man!!! the will and trust of the collective is a better vote of confidence than chain of command

Saturn and Scorpio are pretty neutral to each other, but Scorpio itself is a wonderfully intense, more mature version of Mars; sorry, but it's manga Rei Hino versus 90s anime Rei Hino, with strong environmental and personal intuition. I've been a Jearmin shipper sometimes, and this is where those two boys are simpatico, imo.

Aka a deep dive of sorts on the character formerly known as Eclipse, who I'm going to dub Pseudo-Eclipse(is there a popular new name for him?) and the stuff that followed. Spoilers for part of Security Breach Ruin

Who is Pseudo-Eclipse: Most people who have the Daycare Attendant as their favorite character(s) know who this is, but even now there's probably some fans who don't know(or, if they do, don't know the fully situation)

In Security Breach there's an arcade cabinet in the Daycare Attendant's room called Balloon World

In the game you play as Balloon Boy and try to stay floating as long as possible. The game is similar to Flappy Bird, but with a few differences. One of the important ones is the day/night cycle, with Sun and Moon in the background of their respective times of day

Another difference is the purple glitches which, if touched, lead to this weird glitchy world

If you follow the weird line of glitchy squares, eventually the trail will end and this will happen

After a few seconds of this screen(which isn't a still image, but I wanted a good shot of the "good night" messages) the arcade game crashes and you get sent back to the Daycare Attendant's room

This (sorta)character eventually became known as Eclipse to the Daycare Attendant side of the fandom(I don't know how well known it is outside of that group)

Why this interpretation: Why was he called Eclipse by most of the fandom? Why was he usually called a fusion? Some people called it something related to Sun and/or assumed he was Sun if he was infected by Glitchtrap, but those people were in the minority

Well here's a clearer look at Pseudo-Eclipse's sprite. While he has Sun's rays, his face is obviously Moon's(Sun also has a grinning sprite, but Moon's smile seems closer to it). Almost like Moon is right in front of Sun, aka

an eclipse(specifically an annular eclipse). Which would explain the odd coloring(due to the moon's lack of light to reflect and the ring of fire) and the background(the redder color of the sky mixed with the virus' purple)

So because of that, he was called Eclipse. And while it's unclear if Moon is just in front of Sun or if Pseudo-Eclipse is one (fused)entity, it's funner to imagine it as a character

Fanon: interpretations of Pseudo-Eclipse can vary wildly in design, personality, and origin. But one common personality I see is him being depicted as evil, which makes sense because of the implied connection to Glitchtrap. There's also quite a few who depict Pseudo-Eclipse as a middle ground between the two(one could argue Eclipse works in a similar way)

The way he shows up also differs depending on the universe. In works that are more similar to canon, I've seen it show up in specific lighting conditions, be a security mode, or just come from the arcade. In aus where Sun and Moon are separate beings I've seen Pseudo-Eclipse be a sibling, some other relative, or just a dude that's entirely unconnected to them. Funnily enough, I haven't seen many people depict it as an actual fusion

One trait I've seen in a lot of fan designs is him having 4 arms(I even ran a poll for it, a majority of the voters preferred 4 arms), though I did see a cool design that gave him 6 arms. This fits with his nature as a glitch/fusion/generally odd being

However, while "Eclipse" quickly became a fusion name(as well as its own character in some way pre-Ruin), some designs seemed to forget or not notice why Pseudo-Eclipse was called that in the first place. I've also seen designs that, while obviously based on the arcade glitch, take a lot of creative liberties

On the more astronomy-accurate-arcade-inaccurate side of Pseudo-Eclipse designs, I've seen a lot of people make it look more like a partial eclipse than an annular one. This fits with the Daycare Attendant's half and half design and is possibly what Steel Wool chose to do with Eclipse(though it may be a coincidence)

There's also those who make Eclipse more purple/blue? Some of the designs may be based on other types of eclipses, but aside from a possible Sun-design-Moon-color for balance reasons(astronomy accuracy be damned), I'm not sure why this is

On the other side of the coin, there's those who decided to make ocs and/or other fusions

Fan characters: Pseudo-Eclipse was able to open the door to other ideas for eclipse-based designs that weren't supposed to be the arcade glitch or your average fusion. One that I've only seen a few times is fans noticing that Pseudo-Eclipse is an annular eclipse and making a design based off of a total eclipse

Another Sun-based design is "Solar Eclipse", despite Pseudo-Eclipse already being one of those. Accuracy varies, but these tend to be on the more accurate side and I've seen ones based on annular and partial eclipses. There's also those who call the "Nice Eclipse" from The Sun and Moon Show this, despite him looking like a weird Sun most of the time

But the thing about Pseudo-Eclipse is that he mostly looks like Sun. So the idea of a Moon-based design, aka Lunar Eclipse, became a thing. These designs are usually pretty blue, probably meant to mirror Pseudo-Eclipse's orange. They usually have a nice personality, possibly because of Pseudo-Eclipse usually being depicted as evil. A popular example of this is Lunar from The Sun and Moon Show

These designs are nice, but most of them are in a similar boat to several fan designs for Pseudo-Eclipse. Because while lunar eclipses do exist, this isn't an "astronomy accurate" design. Though in my experience, some people will probably be more familiar with another name for a lunar eclipse

aka, a blood moon. Which is also the name of some fan characters, though the most popular one is probably from The Sun And Moon Show

Despite both being lunar eclipses, Blood Moon and Lunar Eclipse don't seem to have any connection beyond them both working/having worked with SAMS-Eclipse

Ruin(ed) tags: When the ruin dlc came out, Daycare Attendant fans were blessed with a canon Eclipse(who is a wonderful character, but not the topic of this post)

But all good things come at a cost and this is no exception. While Eclipse is the main one showing up in search results and tags, Pseudo-Eclipse still appears a lot. On top of that, as of now there's no real way to search for(or stop seeing) Pseudo-Eclipse content and without any pictures it can be hard to tell which one a person is talking about(I don't know how ao3 users are doing, but I imagine it's a similar story over there)

"Glitch Sun" seems to be one people like(use of this name goes back to 2022), but while it may be getting more popular it's not nearly as well known as "Eclipse. It also assumes that Pseudo-Eclipse is Sun, which a lot of people disagree with. This interpretation may get more popular thanks to Ruin, but it doesn't really work for those who still view Pseudo-Eclipse as a eclipse and don't want to call it a sun

I've also seen tags used for specific au versions of Pseudo-Eclipse and The Sun And Moon Show. While designs vary, several are accurate or inaccurate enough for a lot of fans. However, these are specific characterizations of him with specific origins. Not to mention the specific settings and lore. However, too many of these would defeat the purpose of using specific tags to filter stuff out

One fan name I've seen suggested is referring to Eclipse as a lunar eclipse and Pseudo-Eclipse as a solar eclipse. But they're both obviously solar eclipses or at least solar eclipse adjacent. Also, it would just turn into "which Lunar are they talking about" for those who post about Lunar Eclipse

Ruin: While fans love Eclipse(and hopefully Steel Wool will give it more attention), that doesn't mean they're done with Pseudo-Eclipse. And neither is the game

As I mentioned in a previous post, while the arcade game is broken and unplayable in Ruin, if you look up in the room and wait a few seconds while wearing the rabbit mask

it's still there. So, that begs the question of who this is. While we know that he's connected to Glitchtrap/the Mimic's virus and is most likely not a sun, there's not a lot to work with

But at the end of the day, he's just a neat little easter egg character that fans grew attached to. It may not have a major place in the lore, but he still left a big impact

Various Sailor Moon fan design things (not in chronological order).

The big sheet 'o fanon form concepts was born out of some sprite edits I'd done recently: y'see, I wasn't satisfied with my first pass at the "Ultra" forms and tested something out on those sprite edits (using Sailor V's armour as a basis instead of that one proto-Moon sketch). Then I thought about what other forms I could make for everyone, getting as far as "Speed" and the basic idea for "Aqua" before I needed to draw them.

In addition to all the new stuff, "Mystic" and "Defender" got redesigned, too (mostly just putting the bow back on Mystic). Other notes:

"Elemental" is a simplified form of the early Sera Myu costumes; the name (and its attachment to Myu) came from AmethystSadachbia's AU.

"Blue Shift" has the distinction of being completely uniform (even Moon and Chibi Moon would have the same outfits), with only the brooch and tiara gem reflecting the wearer's normal planet colour. Largely inspired by cheerleader uniforms.

Everyone wears shorts in their "Gravity" form; the coats are about the same length as Mystic.

"Omni" is similar to what I was gonna have everyone's Cosmic form look like; more on that later.

"Aqua" is probably the most situational out of all of these; maybe it would see use on a planet that's 99% ocean?

Other stuff:

Redesigned Sailor Charon/Celia Spiros; her new hairstyle is modeled after a character (Monaka) from another Naoko Takeuchi work, "Toki Meca".

After going to the trouble of adjusting Naru-as-Sailor-Earth's colours... I ended up dropping this element from my AU entirely in favour of just elevating Mamoru to "Sailor Earth" (and Helios to Sailor Sun). :U But I didn't want the concept of an empowered Naru to go to waste, so now she's a pseudo-Guardian who uses Usagi's Disguise Pen to transform and takes the alias "Sailor Comet". (It's a common fan-Senshi name, but realistically not something that could spawn a Sailor Crystal.)

Omni Form Sailor Moon, the "good future" alternative to Sailor Cosmos--or, "I had to write around using the Classic anime as a basis for my AU". (Chibi Chibi will become Sailor Cosmos eventually, but because she's Galaxia's disembodied Sailor Crystal/daughter by technicality, she's not going to look like canon Cosmos) Uses Cosmos as a basis, with elements from manga!NQS.

🛌: What tropes show up in fics involving your ship?

So here’s something interesting I’ve noticed about ships involving HSR Carmen - she tends to either end up in a dichotomy (like with Kafka, where they are the Trailblaze and the Finality respectively), or in a ship with someone who deeply resembles her in some way (like with Himeko). Acheron is an interesting example where both are kind of applicable, as both are kind of wandering around the galaxy with no hard ties because of their backgrounds, but also they have what’s probably best described as a sun and moon dynamic. Also, this one’s a platonic example, but I have to include Aventurine for both being a narrative foil to Carmen, but also one that both resembles her in some ways design-wise and does have some poignant similarities to her.

🤪: What is your trait that fanon would exaggerate?

My honest guess is it would be her diva and hater tendencies. They’re definitely there, particularly when she’s interacting with Aventurine and he’s feeding into them, but she’s not completely unreasonable. I do think she’d get the “hater and a gatekeeper but God’s favorite princess” treatment, which is funny and I definitely make that joke about her, but it can be exhausting when that’s all they boil her character down to. Also, because most of the targets of her Hater Behavior happen to be men, I absolutely dread to think that there would be a fringe group of the fandom that would construe it as man-hating — I mean, come on, she’s bisexual!

❤️: How popular is you x your f/o? Are you a rarepair?

We discussed this in vc but I’m putting it here for the world to see! I think her most popular ship for sure would be her and Acheron, because they’d get to interact a lot in the Penacony arc and the chemistry would be pretty natural. Himeko/Carmen and Kafka/Carmen would follow right after, because Himeko also gets some good interactions with her during Penacony, and as I’m planning it now, Kafka is an important figure in her character quest. Everything beyond that is probably less common, but maybe not necessarily rare.

In a similar vein to the question another anon posted recently, what are your theories on what the Sundrop and moonstone are? Apart from the obvious symbolism where did they even come from? It's kept blurry in the movie and series, but other people have interpreted them as artifacts of Sun/Moon deities. I'm personally not a fan of this, maybe because the wild and mysterious magic is lost in a way. (there's something to be said about two halves of one (power) and Raps and Cass, but that's getting into fanon territory...)

Also, a plot hole that's been bothering me: how did Frederick even find out about the Sundrop in the first place? The movie implies that it was a legend, but that's kept vague. (and gothel really needs a better magical-flower disguise than a plastic bush)

Now we're getting into territory that frustrates me. lol Because the series departs so far from the movie that I don't really have an answer. In the movie, the Sundrop was just... a fairytale vehicle, you know? "Once upon a time, this magical event occurred." And that was it. It was just a magical event so that the story could happen.

In "Lost and Found", Demanitus tells us that the combined Sundrop and Moonstone were "an ancient power" that was divided in two. That doesn't imply that they're divine artifacts to me, but a singularity that was somehow split (for whatever mysterious reason).

I honestly haven't put a lot of thought into it, because I don't... entirely like it. As I said at the start, it's a departure from the movie. moving firmly into AU territory.

The movie implied that magic was rare. So rare, in fact, that most people don't think it's real. Eugene freaked out when he saw real magic in action. Then the series goes and says that he spent all this time out in the world where you run into magic by tripping on rocks. That mermaids and fae folk are real, that there are forests that rearrange themselves, that there's a counterpart to the Sundrop that's a huge danger to the world.

What you describe is not a plot hole. It's exactly what you said it was: a legend. There was a legend of a magic golden flower that could heal the sick, and it was Frederic's last hope, so he sent everyone out looking for it. Vagueness doesn't make it a plot hole.

And did you seriously just say that Gothel's basket was plastic? What the heck, my dude. XD It's, like, wicker or something, and she regularly covers it in fresh leaves, and it literally worked for her for centuries, so in what way does it need to be "better"? What would you recommend instead, a tower?

It’s nice to see another author’s process for story/au building! It’s like a little behind the scenes treat, like getting a dessert because you liked the main course so much! Even if I know nothing about Hades or Monkie Kid, I always find myself wanting to know more about these aus you’ve built but I never know what to ask. Hard to narrow it down when you know nothing about the source material.

As a writer myself, I’d say it’s kind of similar for me. Put the characters into roles first, then build around that. But for me, it’s less Vibes™️ and more ‘what will allow me to explore an interesting concept or dynamic?’ And it’s not always rooted in creating an au out of other media I’m interested in (although I definitely do that. A lot. Just haven’t shared them.) Sometimes it starts from a simple observation of canon or fanon. Like all the sun and moon symbolism of Edward and Ling, Ed the sun and Ling the moon. And I thought, ‘well, what if it was reversed?’ Thus moon dragon prince of Xerxes and phoenix harpy Ling au was born. Writing in that one is really fun!

As for modern aus… I get it. I feel like they don’t have as many interesting concepts to explore with the lack of fantasy elements, but I do have a few, and I don’t mind reading them depending on what they’re about! I think a modern au that still had alchemy in it could be very interesting, there’s just other things I want to work on more.

That's definitely another way to make aus! A good dynamic is key to any au for me, personally, so "what if" questions do tend to do the trick just as well! That's actually what inspired me to write Solaris. Just the simple question of "hey what if canon. But established edling." (Also total sidenote but edling are a sun-4-sun ship to me. They're both suns your honor. Just in different ways. Sun and moon is super cool tho!)

Yeaaah for modern aus it's not that I've never read an interesting one but they only seem to captivate me if they have an actually compelling plot going on, that's more than internal strife and "will they won't they". One of my favorite mdzs fics for example is a college and tokyo ghoul au fusion. It has lots of college au elements but the other aspect of the au keeps it fresh. Otherwise I'm just. Bored. Call it jaded but I'm well past my days of pointless fluff with no direction ruejdj3jee. No shade to anyone who likes that stuff tho

The Mellanoid Planetary System -- Home of the "Mellanoid Slime Worms”

(Star Trek fanon worldbuilding)

The Mellanoid-Sun is a G8V Main Sequence Star a little cooler, less luminous, and more metallic than The Sun (Sol).

Orbiting close to the sun is Class-T hot Neptunian world, Cool Ember, which is so close to the Sun it is rarely seen except during afternoon, morning, and twilight. When seen through a telescope, it is sometimes blue and sometimes red, depending the orientation of its bright face. The sun-facing side is blue due to rayleigh scattering in its cloudless atmosphere and the night side is glowing a dull red due to heat from within the planet.

Very analogous to Mercury and the Inner Bajoran Planets is the Class-D planet Rabbit, a tidally locked cratered world. The far side is covered in ice. Its fast orbit has given it the name that could be vaguely translated as “Rabbit” (a sort of quick herbivorous vertebrate).

Rabbit is the largest member of an asteroid belt that extends out from Cool Ember to just under Omen’s orbit.

Beyond the inner planets is Omen. It is a “Class-J” gas giant of 2 Jupiter Masses which formed in the outer solar system and migrated inwards, disrupting the existing planet-forming disk. It has four substantial moons and about 15 minor satellites. It exists within the habitable zone, and its satellite planets are quite diverse. Rival is the innermost satellite planet, Class H and volcanic, followed by Lake, a Class O pelagic world, Spark, an airless Class D moonlike world, and Oldsky, a Class M habitable satellite planet.

Omen and Oldsky are also known in the Federation by their Zaldan names, Rarchilk and Ragdus, as prior to joining the Federation, the Zaldan Military operated an outpost and research station on Ragdus. Mellanoids sometimes refer to Oldsky as Ragdus, but they ALWAYS refer to Omen by that word.

Omen has a few asteroidal coorbital companions, but not very many, as the trojan population has been destabilized by a very large coorbital...

Omen’s largest coorbital companion is Mellanus, the M-class homeworld of Mellanoid Slimes (Such as Murph Prodigy & Eaurp Guz). Mellanus is very similar in radius to Earth, but it’s slightly less massive and lacks any major satellites. It does have two small asteroid satellites.

Mellanus’s shallowest oceans are covered in a thin layer of slime--but it’s enough that it actually makes up the majority of the planet’s biomass. Its forests and deserts are a little more conventional, with slime life uncommon in the deserts except for Mellanoid Slime People and reasonably common but not dominating in the forests.

Mellanus had its first contact with aliens in the 2320s or 2330s, via the Zaldans. Mellanus’ Fed-standard name comes from the Zaldans. When they Zaldans joined the Federation, they cut contact with Mellanus as they were pre-warp, and abandoned their outpost on Ragdus.

Mellanus invented their own warp drive in the 2360s, and were fast-tracked into the Federation for political reasons during the Dominion War, as it was feared they might otherwise be manipulated by the changelings.

Mellanus has successfully lobbied to resist Starfleet interference in their space affairs, and, with nuclear fission, chemical propulsion, and rudimentary impulse and warp drives, are focusing on exploring their own solar system before they “let starfleet have their fun.”

Mellanus is in a Horseshoe Orbit of Omen. Roughly every 18 Mellanus years, it makes a close approach to Omen in its orbit. Omen’s gravity pulls it into a higher orbit, then 18 years later they meet on the other side, and Omen’s gravity pulls it into a lower orbit. Omen got its name as, when it begins to get very large in the sky, it its a portent of a changing seasonal arrangement. In the low orbit, summers may be harsh and winters mild, and in the high orbit, summers mild and winters bitter.

Omen creates another season cycle as well, that of interest in astronomy and space exploration. For the whole time the Space Program has existed, every 18 years at each close approach of Omen, people are more and more willing to support the Space Program as it is a quite striking and visible reminder of how much space affects life on Mellanus.

Beyond Omen is a substantial gap where a few unstable asteroids orbit, analogous to the trojans of our solar system. Beyond that is Glerbuh, a proper name for an ancient deity of Time.

Glerbuh is a Class-J super-jupiter of about 4 Mj, with 13 small icy worlds (most either P-class or D-class), and over a hundred irregular captured satellites! With a telescope, if you carefully blot out the light of the planet itself, you will see a faint nebulousity surrounding the planet. This was first identified by an astronomer who was so skilled at shapeshifting they could manipulate their eyes into achromatic telescopes, and thus easily work with internal obstructions near the focal plane. (Mellanoid Slime Astronomers on a budget may dissolve their eye lenses or figure their eye lenses manually rather than use real eyepieces, but this approach has limitations). The cause of the nebulosity was suspected in the photographic era but it wasn't until early space probe missions that the cause was definitely determined: Almost all of Glerbuh's innermost rounded moons are cryovolcanically active, including a pair of horseshoe coorbitals, and they are spewing water ice from their internal oceans into space. This is potentially one of the most interesting and unique astrobiological environments--a system of moons swapping ice, water, and maybe even microbes, and would be worthy of exploration by Starfleet, except that Mellanus demands to continue its own space program.

Beyond Glerbuh are five ice giants. Four of them were known to Mellanoids prior to Federation membership, the other one was discovered using subspace sensors and orbits extremely far out, but is the most massive of them. They are 7, 11, 14, 5, and 18 Earth Masses respectively, and each have moon systems worthy of study. Only Two of the ice giants have yet been visited by robotic spacecraft, the first and third one. (The first was explored by a dedicated mission, the third one was a third flyby in an Omen-Glerbuh-Eauauh flyby chain) minor planets, comets, and full size planets are by convention named for their discoverer*, so the ice giants are named:

Schmidt (named for Captain Schmidt of the U.S.S. Courage, who first reported the planet--though it's probable the Zaldans knew of it first and never mentioned it in their pre-federation dealings with the Mellanoids.)

*When Glarpi was discovered, it was originally named Slarmock's Star, after an emperor. Needless to say, astronomers from other mellanoid nations of the time didn't take well to this name, and called it such things as the Demon Star, the Fool Star, or just, The Sixth Planet. Eventually it was referred to as Glarpi's Planet, or just Glarpi, and that was how it was. When someone discovers more than one object, it can either be given a name followed by a number, or the second object can be named after a friend of the discoverer, with certain rules established by the Mellanoid Astronomical Nomenclature Office regarding not naming it after politicians or especially controversial figures.

(Deep out in the far reaches of the Mellanus star system, where no spacecraft or starship have ever been, lies Schmitt, the last and heaviest ice giant. It was picked up on subspace sensors and later recovered by Mellanoid Astronomers using an orbiting space telescope. Nothing is known about it aside from its pinkish color and the fact that it has a very substantial moon for its size.)
