A few days have passed since the match Blue Lock and the U-20 team had. It was a huge deal, since it was the deciding match for the project, and it was even broadcasted internationally. Even Sae, one of the New Gen 11 members participated on the side of the Japanese team. Something that surprised his peers, everyone knew that Sae was pretty adamant on not playing for the team, ever. So once that got out, other players that were acquainted somewhat with Sae were glued to the TV to watch it. They were surprised to see the Blue Lock team holding up well, especially with Sae and Shidou on the team, with 3 standing out in particular. There was Rin Itoshi, the younger brother of Sae and vice-captain, who scored the 1st goal. As expected, most of the New Gen11 thought. The 2nd and 3rd ones were guys who the players never met or heard of before, aside from Loki. Isagi Yoichi, the one to score the winning goal, and to pretty much shake Sae Itoshi's balance during the game. And then there was (Y/n) (L/n), the captain of the team, midfielder, and the one who kept the game under control the most. She caught the attention of one player in particular, Charles Chevalier. The midfielder of PXG and France's U-20 team. The boy was curious with the precision the captain had when passing the ball to the other players. Not only that, but also calculating every move the opposite team made was not something Charles expected from someone who wasn't a pro. A no name player, basically.

After the final goal was scored, the boy already had made up his mind. While the game was interesting and all, he wanted to watch more of the midfielder. He didn't like it, but he had to admit that he wanted to learn more about the player. Her plays, stats, everything. But sadly, there wasn't much Charles could go off on. And he wanted to drop it, he will eventually meet the palyer, he believed she was capable enough to score a spot in a pro-team. That was all until Loki told him the news of PXG being invited to play in Blue lock, and Charles immediately agreed. How could he say no?

Now, Loki was used to messes. He was a coach now, so he had to be used to that. But this! This was beyond what his nerves could take. Not only did he have to suffer through Rin and Shidou's arguments, now Rin decided to argue with Isagi over the most useless things imaginable.

"What happened to having a calm dinner..." Loki sighed, walking over to pull them apart, something Kurona decided to help him with. Charles was the whole time standing to the side, smiling as he found the whole situation amusing.

'I hope they are done soon. I need to analyze (Y/n)'s play from today. Didn't expect him to leave Manshine in the dust like that.'

"Are you guys arguing again?"

"Calm down, Hiori. You know how they are."

"Aren't you going to do anything, (Y/n)?"

Charles quickly turned his head towards the entrance, only to see the player he was most excited to meet standing next to the blue-haired boy.

'Finally!' Charles grinned.

"What do you expect me to do? They have been like that ever since they first met." (Y/n) laughed in amusement, sending an apologetic smile towards Loki, who returned it.

"Loor Loki-san, he is too overwokred." (Y/n) said as Hiori nodded his head along.

"Let's just stop their fight and go eat-"

"Ah! Finally I get to meet you, Blue Lock's golden midfielder."(Y/n) stopped talking and turned to look at the boy who was approaching her. The girl raised an eyebrow as Hiori tensed up a little.

'What's with that look?' The cyan-haired boy thought suspiciously. (Y/n) ignored the arguing for a moment as the boy grinned playfully.

"What?" Was the only thing she said.

"Charles Chevalier, PXG's midfielder. Pleased to finally meet you, (L/n) (Y/n)." The girl's eyes widened at the way he used her name. Sure, she was ranked pretty high on the list, but someone to know her full name was unexpected.

"Uh... N-nice to meet you as well, Chevalier-san. Did you need something-"

"I will get straight to the point with you." Charles interrupted her, yet again and swung his arm around her shoulders.

"Hey! Personal space!" Hiori yelled at Charles, but got no acknowledgment back. This caused the group to stop for a moment and look back at the duo.

'Oh God...' Loki groaned, knowing very well how Charles was with this player in particular.

"Uhm... get to the point with what?" (Y/n) wondered.

"I want you to play for me." Charles said simply.

"Uh... I am in a different team, so no can do." (Y/n) said, laughing nervously. The boy's grin was off putting to her.

"I know." Charles rolled his eyes and pouted a little.

"And while I was annoyed at first, I am happy now. I will have a chance to finally play against you. Tho, I rather have you playing for me."

(Y/n) kept quiet, unsure where all of this was going.

"You are very interesting, (Y/n). I like you~ don't disappoint me!" Charles giggled, packing her cheek.

"Haa?!" The girl yelled in surprise, face flushing a deep red.

"Asshole! Don't do that so randomly!!" Hiori yelled at the French boy, making his way to separate them. Kurona was holding back a blood thirsty Isagi, while he was fighting back his own rage.

"Stop it, Rin." Loki warned, his grip on Rin's shirt tightening.

"I will kill that bastard." The younger Itoshi mumbled.

2/5. lights confuse me so much in general. like, why does it require effort from will in s1 and teens in s4 to make lights flicker, but in the presence of smn/smth dangerous lights flicker by themselves? also, why do people and vecna affect lights directly from the UD but demogorgons & the flesh monster only affect lights in the normal dimension? i'm sure monsters are always roaming in the UD, but they don't mess with lights in hawkins the way vecna does (i suppose he does it unintentionally, so the lack of effort doesn't explain anything to me)

Hi, thanks for sending me these asks about the Upside Down! I'm going to address all five of them in this post -- but I'm going to leave this particular question for last. You'll see why in a bit.

First though, you're getting a rolled-up newspaper to the snoot for calling yourself stupid and your questions dumb. 🗞️🐶 There are still a lot of mysteries in this show, and questioning its inconsistencies is exactly how you solve them!

Why is the Upside Down literally upside down at some points but oriented the right way up at other points?

The Upside Down isn't literally upside down; that's just a visual metaphor the show uses to illustrate its trippy extra-dimensional nature. I wrote a post explaining the basics of extra-dimensionality a while ago that you might find interesting.

Why are the Christmas light decorations at the Snow Ball visible in the Upside Down if it's supposed to be frozen on 6th Nov 1983?

We know from the teens using Holly's Lite Brite in S4 that electronic lights in the real world naturally produce glowing particles in the corresponding spot in the Upside Down, even if those devices weren't there on 6th Nov 1983. Most likely that's what we're seeing at the Snow Ball.

Alternatively, it could be the case that the flow of time in the UD is more complicated than S4 led us to believe, and the Snow Ball lights will make more sense once we've watched S5. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

What's up with the random temporary gate in the tree that Nancy uses to visit the Upside Down in S1?

Nancy's tree isn't the only weird gate -- we see lots of temporary portals open throughout S1.

The show doesn't explain how these work beyond heavily associating them with Demogorgon attacks, and I think we're supposed to assume that the Demogorgon is opening them itself. This would explain Nancy's tree -- the Demogorgon was nearby at the time.

The trouble is, this raises far more questions than it answers. Why don't Demogorgons seem to use portals outside of S1, especially the ones imprisoned at Kamchatka? Was that one Demogorgon from S1 just a special boy with unique abilities? Why did Vecna need to wait for a gate to be opened by El if his minions were capable of opening their own gates? Did the Mothergate "unlock" this ability while open and "lock" it again when closed? If so, why no temporary gates in S2?

We're not supposed to know the answer to these questions yet; it's pretty clear that they're saving it for some big reveal in S5. I have a theory on what that reveal might be... but that's for another post.

Why are the circumstances of El banishing Henry to the Upside Down in S4 so different from when she does the same thing to the Demogorgon in S1?

On a literal level... yeah. The differences don't make a lot of sense. It's probably safe to assume that El opened a portal in S1 like she did in S4, and it had already closed itself by the time the particles dissipated enough to unblock our view... but as for how she ended up in the Upside Down, and why the Demogorgon wasn't in there with her...?

To answer this one, I think it's helpful to remember that literal readings only get you so far when you're dealing with a story as steeped in metaphor as Stranger Things.

When El banished Henry to the Upside Down, it was a triumphant act of self-defense, asserting her autonomy against an abuser. But when she banished the Demogorgon, it was a tragic act of self-sacrifice -- she defeated it (thus why it disappears), but at the cost of remaining stuck in the "weapon" role Brenner had forced her into her whole life.

Both Henry and El were at a low point when they "died", and getting sent to the Upside Down afforded them an opportunity to start a new journey of self-discovery free from Brenner's influence. But while One stayed there and became Vecna, Eleven chose to escape and be "reborn" as El.

[The rebirth symbolism really couldn't be any more on-the-nose. 👀 Speaking of this portal -- you wondered where it came from -- it's the same one the Demogorgon burst through in the S1 finale.]

And so we've arrived at your final question.

In my opinion, the lights are part metaphor, part mystery being saved for S5.

I think I'd need to comb through the whole show double-checking every instance of the lights flickering to properly address the mystery stuff, and unfortunately I don't have time for that right now. But I'll say this much: I think you're on the right track for questioning the way the lights behave, because it's possible the show has been misleading us into thinking we're looking at one thing (let's say a monster) when really we were looking at something else (let's say a kid with powers).

As for the metaphor? When Will and the teens were trapped in that cold, dark, despairing realm from which it seemed like there was no escape, what saved them was reaching out to the light of hope -- their loving friends and family.

Even El, who escaped all by herself, was still beckoned back to the real world by its light shining through the portal.

At the end of the day, that's what this show is about: love and hope conquering the despair of being different and rejected and abused. Bearing that in mind makes it a lot easier to figure out what's going on with the lights and the Upside Down, in my opinion.

It's why monsters only make the lights flicker or go out when they breach containment and enter our world: because they're destroyers of hope. It's also why powers sometimes make the lights flicker and sometimes make them surge: being different can be difficult to cope with... but it's also a beautiful and valuable thing to be.

Glittering tails flashed in the afternoon sun, the three carbuncles bright spots of color against the wild grass and reddened stone. They frolicked through the field, red and white and teal, each one a reflection of their summoner. Alisaie's was as fiery as the girl herself, its fur a bright, shining scarlet that caught the eye with every bound. Yesuntei's carbuncle was, er, not quite as well-heeled as her companions'. It dashed merrily through the grass, leading her on a wild chase in its wake, its emerald tails waving cheerfully as it leapt and rolled through the dirt.

I like to raid and shiny hunt in pokémon violet, but I don't play ranked. I build competitive teams that I'll never use because my brain makes the happy chemical when I see maxed EVs.

I play splatoon 3 as a flingza roller and custom jr. main, but I'm usually chewing through salmon run instead of playing turf war. I don't try to rank in this game, either, but I enjoy splat zones.

Yes, it’s true that in my fic for now he’s kinda in his baby era so far XD so he’s not at his worst at all yet (gonna detailed that later but yeah it really develop during healing church era & become even worst after the fishing Hamlet. Until MP calm him the fuck down but it was already too late to fix the mess 😭and with beasthood creeping it was not super great for him…) but I imagined he still have a couple of flaws at that time yes.

Well back at Byrgenwerth and afterwards he was overconfident, too proud and wanted to test lot of new things that the older scholars didn’t really approve of (even if he was right some experiment or research, he wanted to do were either kind of controversial or people found the results weren’t that great at first.) But he was proven right in the end about the old blood XD so yeah, he got kinda a big ego who grow more during the years/his life. He can be impulsive, reckless but will do anything if the ones he cares about are in danger.

(Just another idea I had too I think him and some people of Byrgenwerth staff could be ok with torturing people and enemies, and experiment on people O_O but he’s not the worst at all (like he just talk and ask question) but it’s more of an AU scenario I guess)

In contrary the more the years pass the more he start to loose empathy towards stranger he couldn’t save (but he’s a doctor too of course he got disconnect but sometimes it’s just too much) and even towards his friends after losing lots of them :/ He start to believe that « some sacrifice need to be done » and would continue what he started and still wanted to reach the great ones, at WHATEVER THE COST. Ready to take distance or ditch? the ones who didn’t follow and weren’t of any use to him and would just hold him back.

He became quite a bit absorb in religion too (but normal he’s a vicar you would say) he want to « strict to the code! » But his way, or the saint writings or smt but kinda his interpretation and what he learned. He helped people with religion and with the healing blood of course but some people start to almost veneered him, believed he was some kind of messenger of the gods etc. And that allowed him to changed people mind on lot of things (even if he didn’t plan too at first) That didn’t help so yeah god/messiah complex let’s go… Also, yeah kinda obsess with the great ones, ascension (the watchdogs and fire cough cough but I digress).

As well, after the church gained lots of influence, his life was on the line several time and he didn’t seems to realize it was THAT serious XD

As for the « preventive measures, aka go kill people before they become beast but are still human » I liked to thing it wasn’t from him perhaps but it become automatic after his death, or maybe it happened when they had huge doubts, but could be occasional and was generalized later on (after his death).

So yeah, for me he’s not the huge devil but not an angel either. He’s human, the best and worst of humanity. To resume, he wanted to do good things, had ambitions and just had a few flaws, then he become kinda an egocentric bastard & distance/dissociated from his friends and their suffering.

He cared about his friends for real but the trauma of losing some really changed him and he then he began to give an image of someone how is more bother by the administrative mess he got to deal with, because his close friends died/suffer/or are problematic than being sad for them/trying to help genuinely without waiting for smt in return. (actually, he is SAD! And want to help but he got responsibilities… and he decided that they pass before… (see what happen with Caryll/some members of the church/Maria/Gehrman/Ludwig/the Vilebloods vs executioners/Gehrman again lol/Old Yharnam burning etc) I think he didn’t really want the Cainhurst massacre /Old Yharnam burning to happen but he thought it was sadly the best/less worst thing to do and they didn’t have another choice. Especially with Cainhurst, I hc they got a Third of umbilical cord in the end SO…

 And after all deal with the blood moon he realized his mistake and tried to get thing to be better but… it was too late… he couldn’t just take back the blood like that or say it was too dangerous… you can’t risk a civil war and even so it’s in the wild, traffic would still happen… and the rest of the church would probably thing he’s crazy… I think at the end of his life he was really pitiful yes….

(Last mention to his incredible theme who make me see/imagined all his life (like gehrman’s). The glorious part as well as the decent to hell…)

In conclusion I think yeah, he was a grand man but kind of a bastard too…really a nuanced character. He wanted to help but ultimately failed… (still I think healing church maybe even worst after he passed away) Like the one before him (pthumerians) and the one after. And even if it wasn’t him maybe smn else would have done what he did. For me he’s one, if not THE MOST important character of Bloodborne lore, after all.
