Fic Writing Review 2023 🌈
i wanted to take a moment to reflect on the past year and bring it to a nice close, so i took to tumblr search and google to see if there was some sort of tag game going around. i frankensteined this list of questions from a few different versions of what was probably originally the same thing, but the nature of The Website of course makes it impossible to locate an original, so this is me just sort of, well, joining the fun by starting a parallel thread.
-
Words and Fics (on ao3) 📚
words posted: 73,947, but this is a little deceptive because all the words for A flip-flop state of mind currently get counted for 2023, so it's probably something closer to 45-50k
fics posted: 21, which will eventually go down to 19 when i update the two multi-chapter works and they get sorted into the new year
first fic: Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream Throuple [Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House (1948)]
last fic: Bases loaded, do your dance [h50]
-
Ships and Fandoms ⚓
ao3 tells me the following:
Starsky & Hutch (8)
Hawaii Five-0 (2010) (7)
Ted Lasso (TV) (2)
Stargate Atlantis (1)
Hard Core Logo (1996) (1)
Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House (1948) (1)
Top Gun (Movies) (1)
and for each of those it's probably the ship you most expect if you know the thing (and the way fandom works), except maybe ted lasso (both fics are keeley/roy/jamie) and sga (a gen team fic, no ships).

Top 5 Fics by Kudos 🏆
no big surprises here. ted lasso was easily the biggest fandom i've written for this year (not to mention that these two fics had the good fortune of being posted very soon after the finale), followed by h50 long before s&h comes on the scene:
How To Build A Triangle (or accidentally fall headlong into one, or whatever the fuck) [ted lasso]
Honey honey, how you thrill me (Honey honey, nearly kill me) [ted lasso]
A flip-flop state of mind [h50]
Oh, kiss me like the final meal (Yeah, kiss me like we die tonight) [h50]
Something old, something new [h50]

Top 5 Favorite Fics 💖
these are in no particular order!
3 AM, the time when most people die - this is a hard core logo (1996 canadian movie) fic which just kind of Happened, and it hung around on ao3 for a solid few days in a 0 kudos 10 hits sort of state, which had me giggling every time i thought about it. 2023 goal of writing for me, myself & i achieved (0 kudos on a fic)! ✅ (that said, it does also bring me great joy to see that the number is upwards of zero now. lovely to see an obscure thing find its audience. <3)
Your hands in my back pockets - a starsky/hutch fic, and in some ways the opposite to the previous one. i had a "this is alright" sort of feeling about it when i hit post, and the (lovely! very flattering!) way people responded to it surprised me somewhat. reading it back now, i don't know what bothered me about it at first - it's nice, it flows, it's all good! plus, i really like the title. it's a good s/h title.
POV: It’s a lovely day, you’re sipping a refreshing cold drink on your 70s apartment balcony, and the upstairs neighbor who always waters the sago palm outside your front door when you forget about it has that one friend over and his windows wide open. - this is a starsky/hutch all dialogue fic, and it was just plain fun! very easy to write, thankfully not hard to read, and the title is completely ridiculous in a way that still gives me a kick.
How To Build A Triangle (or accidentally fall headlong into one, or whatever the fuck) - can't not mention this one, i think. it's the roy/jamie/keeley ted lasso fic i wrote in record time (for me), and i had a blast doing that and i think that's palpable in the end result. i have warm memories of this!
Oh, kiss me like the final meal (Yeah, kiss me like we die tonight) - h50! steve/danny! they'd gotten swamped by all the starsky/hutch in 2022, but they made a minor comeback this past year. and again, this fic was just plain fun - a scene that really needed the mcdanno rewrite, and i'm glad it happened, and that it decided to flow so smoothly it grew twice as long as intended. the gag with the gun is still good, the banter works, and i like "it tastes like a laugh".
-
Fandom Fic Events 🤝
my knee-jerk first thought was none, which would have been a blatant lie for this year! i wrote a fic for the SHareCon (starsky/hutch con) zine, which is currently still zine-only but will appear on ao3 at some point in the future, and i also wrote something for this year's Starsky & Hutch Advent Calendar, which can be found here (which will also lead you to all the other lovely advent calendar gifts of 2023 and previous years!). neither of these things would have happened if starsky & hutch fandom hadn't been such a warm, welcoming, unbelievably well-organized space. <3

Projects for 2024 👀
oh god. oh god i have so many things on the grill.
the end of 2023 was a stretch of time where i did write some, and at times even a very decent amount, but nothing seemed to be getting finished - which was annoying for a bit, and then sort of petered out into oh well. it'll happen, eventually, when it wants to. which means that currently i have a whole bunch of nearly finished things for a whole bunch of fandoms:
bad buddy - should this be top of the list? who knows. but oh, i need to write something for this - i have to, i need to, you know. it's just that it's turning out to be more of a challenge than most new things i start writing for, because i do feel i have a reasonable grip on the characters, but the fact that it's a thai series which i'm only consuming through fan-generated subtitles is clashing with some of the fundamentals of how i usually write fic, as it turns out. usually i watch a thing and then mimic character voices to write a section of (probably mostly, maybe only) dialogue, which then gets filled out with descriptions and an actual setting later on. the problem with bad buddy is that i love, love subtitles, and i love, love the people who write them, but they do (understandably! naturally!) lead to some very clunky english at times, and i just can't write things like "are you chickened out, fierce eyes". i cannot. which means i need to half-invent the right english character voice (and how that blends with the little i know of thai speaking patterns and customs), which takes away the thing i usually lean on way more heavily than i previously realized i did, so. it's a journey! it's an experiment! i'm learning things! i'm making choices! and i'm pumped about it but it's also REALLY slowing down the bad buddy fic production.
starsky & hutch - many things are happening! many many! they're just happening slowly. there's one particular fic about starsky and hutch comfortably out at a party and hutch fielding questions about names which has been 98% done for a month or two, but i need one (1) more connective paragraph to wrap things up, and apparently i'm in no hurry. and i love that for me, at the same time as i'm tempted to flick my brain and go Do It. Just Do It. oh god, and then there's a much older comedy fic stuck in close to the same situation only there it's 95% and the missing part is the end, which is at least a little more serious, and there are. i think literally a dozen probably. things that are cooking, bubbling, making interesting little noises. it's yet to be seen which of those turn out tasty.
h50 - there are some shorter wips here that have great potential to go somewhere, but mostly i want to finally (finally!) wrap up a flip-flop state of mind, which only needs finishing touches (albeit a bunch of them) on the final chapter, and then maybe 200 more words for the short epilogue to round things out. i had somewhat hoped to get that done before the new year, but it didn't work out that way, and i'm at peace with it - the longer this fic takes, the more comical my initial estimate of "i can probably get this done within the month" becomes. and after that's done, i can refocus my energy on Sweet like a chic-a-cherry cola, another ill-fated plan which i Will see through (while also enjoying myself), dammit, but i think for that one i'll need to pre-write the whole thing before i start posting again or i'll just keep going in circles.
nashville - it's been a while since my rewatch, so i'm not sure it will ever really come together, but i have a fun little 5+1 will/gunnar thing which lives half in a google docs file and half in my heart. could be nice!
sga - there's One Fic that's near done and has a few turns of phrase in it that keep making me go "oh, this might be worth finishing, actually" every time i return to it, but i think i'll need to let that happen a few more times before we actually get there. there's also a light and comedy-ish aro/ace john fic (heavily featuring john&rodney and john&team) on a low boil. i think that one might need to wait for me to rewatch the show at some point so i'm correctly immersed in the Vibes of it all, but it's very dear to me, so it still gets a permanent In Progress label.
due south - there's one particular thing that i might get back to? maybe. it could happen. @redgoldblue's dedicated live reporting on their due south watch, as well as their ds fic, did stir something in my brain.
other - there's literally two paragraphs of hard core logo fic kicking around in my notes which might turn into something some day. (when i started writing 3AM those new words were intended to blend with the two existing paragraphs, but they never did.) there's some ted lasso that can still be considered wip, but my ted lasso fic moment burned bright and short, it seems, though it's nice to know the framework is there if i ever do a rewatch. oh man, and there's a weird homoerotic over the top (because that's what this canon is) tango & cash wip which i hope will make it across the finish line some day, but i wouldn't be surprised if in the end that's, like. coming to an ao3 page near you soon! in 2026.

Tagging ✨
tag any number of people you want as far as i'm concerned (which can be zero! that's a valid number), but i haven't spotted this going around in my fandom circles yet, so i'll shoot for some good coverage: @redgoldblue @luredin @actingcamplibrarian @stephmcx @pterawaters @the-arya-silvertongue @logicgunn @incognito-insomniac @dedkake @spaceradars @spurious @sparrowsarus @flownwrong @theroseandthebeast @jimmyandthegiraffes @soleadita @ivycross @murphyhatesme @bgharison @thekristen999 @cowandcalf @msbeeinmybonnet @ruztyryan and you, reading this. i fully tagged myself to do this, so please don't feel shy about doing the same! i really do want to read your answers, if you feel like giving them.
obviously there's no pressure, and also feel free to modify this any way you want! give different stats, list top 5 by hits instead of kudos, name just one favorite fic, add in fics you only posted to tumblr rather than ao3, skip a category or invent a new one or throw the whole thing out and only reflect on a single piece of writing in more detail - it's all fair game, as long as it suits you.

Hi Pia
Your previous post regarding burnout really resonates with me as I'm currently struggling through a mountain's worth of uni assignments.
I hopeyou're being compassionate to yourself where you can. I know you rely on your writing for income but ould cutting down to working on only 2 or 3 fics instead be a viable solution?
Because longterm I don't think that even your insanely impressive skills can hold up to that kind of pressure.
Maybe if you cut back a little you'll be able to enjoy your hobbies again and rest a little more.
I know that I'm not the only reader that wants you to take care of yourself x
Hi anon,
Firstly, good luck with all those assignments! I do not miss the grind of uni when all the assignments suddenly seem due at the same time and it's like 'oh fuck' and it just...is truly exhausting. Remember to take a break after if you can!
I am trying to be compassionate where I can. Working on expanding my capacity / juice left in the tank is actually a big priority with both therapists this year, and it's something I'm actively chipping away at.
Unfortunately cutting down fics is not really something I can do because it would personally stress me out more to put a lot of things on hiatus like that. Underline the Red is already on hiatus, and The Nascent Diplomat on my end is finished, and I'll take a few months off after that before starting the next installment.
Ideally I will be finishing out some fics that will clear my calendar a bit more over time. For example, A Stain that Won't Dissolve won't last forever, and isn't going to be replaced by anything new (Palmarosa will likely slot into that space and I'll be able to work on it more). Underline the Black will be replaced by Underline the Red, and Blue and Gold will be replaced by Underline the Silver.
Eventually, ideally, I'll be working on a smaller and smaller load until I'm at about 2-4 projects (which is how I used to work). Also quite a few of my projects only update once a month or every few months, and that helps a lot. It's just that I have too many fics where I'm on a more regular schedule (Stain, Palm, Black) and normally I only have one or two fics that are on a more regular schedule, so yeah, I am looking forward to that slowing down!
But putting something on hiatus just makes me feel more burdened and overwhelmed than knowing I'm getting closer and closer to wrapping something up. It's just how my brain works! I am a finisher, and while that's really good for not abandoning projects (which is extremely rare for me and tends to only be very short projects or PWPs which I will turn away from), it's less good when I have too many projects lmao. I've gotten better at holding back (there's three fics I'm dying to write right now, which is an Efnisien/Kadek fic that I've already started but not posted anything of, Silver, and Red).
So yeah, I will be cutting back. I've already started. The Nascent Diplomat is no longer on my schedule, which means for the next 3 months while it's still posting, I don't have to write anything for it. That's lovely because I can still share in that world with no extra labour (it's edited and everything). Likewise, Stain and Black are both in their last act/s now. That's still a lot of chapters for both, but it feels good for me to know that both will likely be finished out this year.
But we are getting there! So yeah the view is to cut down on projects, but organically (by finishing out stories and not replacing every single one with new titles, only some of them) rather than forcefully via hiatuses. I mean obviously if I get too sick I will have to go on hiatus and I've done that before, but so far it's looking like I've written enough chapters ahead (most of May is written) that I can take about 2 weeks off from writing in April, and that will help a great deal as well. :)
Anyway, take care with your assignments too! I do not miss that part of uni at all

Things I Noticed While Writing Light The Fuse: Part 3, Episode 1
Phew okay time to wrap this one up for real this time!
Tumblr media
This shot is interesting, we've got Ethan staring at Meredith, who's again looking at him, although probably because he's new and an easy target lol and then Johnson is watching Ethan, probably because he's looking at Meredith, while Matty has his eye on the bar
Tumblr media
This is as far back as this shot gets, but Avron is nowhere in sight, so he had to have seen Matty walk over and purposefully approach him, what an asshole
Tumblr media
Found him, weasel was waiting over there on the other side of the bar. Also I still can't get over Agnes calling him Prince it's so cute I just had to make it his actual title, the Prince of the Phoenixes 🥰 but I know it's probably got a bitter side to it too as a reminder that he is still a Phoenix, my deep dive on Matty could go on forever do not get me started
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Okay I needed to point out this entire scene cause these two have such a fascinating not even relationship or rivalry but SOMETHING going on that I need to sit down with the creator and Rhys to know exactly what happened. I can theorize and write up Avron being horrible all day long but my desire to know what went on outside of 'Avron becomes a Brawler and Matty is jealous' because every single acting choice they chose for this scene is so fucking on purpose.
The way he just freezes and stares when he hears his voice isn't jealousy, that's a reaction. He was already tired from the run so he seems to be in a more serious mood here, but something switches as soon as Avron shows up. This is no longer fun on the river Matty, or initiation 'tell me why you wanna be a Phoenix' Matty, this is him upset over something, and Avron brushing him off is only making it worse like look at his face change once he touches him
Tumblr media Tumblr media
That feels like such a deeper hatred than just jealousy. The way Avron is holding onto him and brushed him so roughly, the need to do full eye contact between them, and Matty's mouth twitches again before he says no problem. He was about to start something and I really need to know what happened you guys it's scenes like this that makes this show my Roman Empire
Tumblr media
I looked up dandelion boys specifically for this fic and it turns out it means something along the lines of someone who has lived through great hardship and came out resilient and strong and I'm sobbing again
Tumblr media
I don't want just this scene to be another post on its own so I'll save the rest of this for my eventual Matty deep dive but oh my god. Oh my god. The way he plays all of this. He wants to be a Brawler so bad but we all saw how happy he was on the river. I'm gunna cry again and I'm not joking this time. Oh my god.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here it is, the moment that made me wanna do this series in the first place because I definitely didn't notice this the first time since Johnson was too hot. While Matty is getting the drinks, Johnson and Ethan grab some seats and sit down. Johnson is lighting a cigarette. Matty sits down with the drinks, Johnson is smoking throughout the whole scene, Meredith leaves, and then talks to Joel. Matty then talks to Ethan about her, now smoking, and Johnson is lighting another cigarette. Matty stole it from him instead of getting his own. They're married guys I'm not even kidding with this one.
Also I just love the insinuation of Johnson falling for all of them with no example from Matty, yet he's the only one who actually talks to a Pinup (cough Angel cough) at any point in the show. Gunna be a little full of myself for a second and say out of all the stuff I've written for the fic series so far, I feel like their talk on the car about love might be the closest to canon out of everything, it just feels right.
Tumblr media
Okay first of all I love the little smile Ethan gives at their warning, what a sweet pea. Second there's Avron staring entirely at Matty again, just completely locked on. My god I need to know what their deal is you guys this is getting serious
Tumblr media
He's not straight. This isn't a theory. I also think I was dead on with Matty only starting this conversation because he didn't like how he was talking to Ethan. Best way to get his attention away is to make him focused on Matty again after all
Tumblr media
I really love the detail of Ethan trying really hard not to engage after getting involved with the asshole at the restaurant and him going so still the second he looks at Avron
Tumblr media
His mouth was twitching again, he reached his breaking point with that one, he's not even looking at Ethan. Also lmao at Johnson looking like me the second I don't have my phone, and the cute lil spin in his chair I love him so damn much
Tumblr media
This is another interesting shot to me, Matty is the one saying all this, and Johnson does a fake impressed whistle to go along with it, but Avron says 'that's right' to Johnson out of everyone there, like he should be impressed or something, you can see him look his way specifically, away from Matty and not to Ethan, I wanna know why they choose that direction (it's because I'm right and he's jealous)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is so evil of Matty to reveal the Aunt V secret, look at how Avron's smile just falls because it's getting out, which is why I am constantly insisting that this runs deeper than jealousy because this is so incredibly personal, this one was made to hurt. Also in the og script they actually caught Avron getting a bj from a guy when they were on the river!
Tumblr media
I'm crying again ;w; wonder why they went from this to something even worse? Probably because of all the violence everyone is about to lay out on this man heh me included
Tumblr media
What did Avron do to make Matty say this??? What did he repeat that Matty must've told him??? Johnson is staring him down and agreeing with him too I'm gunna lose my mind!!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ethan coming in hot with the misdirection so he doesn't hurt Matty, Avron successfully reaching for him only for Matty to take it back, and those punches are not just jealousy again guys he's so fuckin mad here! He hurt him and Matty is hurting him back THIS IS KILLING ME
Tumblr media
Once again Johnson is just sitting and watching back there. I mentioned it the first time I posted this scene a while back but I firmly believe he wasn't gunna let Joel throw him out, or maybe he knows that Joel actually wouldn't do that to begin with and this is just to scare him after acting out? The man really does have a soft spot for him so this wouldn't have been the end, he just needs to be grounded for the night and Johnson is aware of that. Obviously I wrote him right there trying to get Joel off cause the thought makes me cry, but I can just as easily picture them sitting outside afterward, Johnson just hands Matty a drink and they hang around all silent GAH I wanna write now but I can't until the weekend OTL
Tumblr media
This isn't an observation. I do love how Ethan stands his ground cause we all know he isn't fragile, but jesus christ if anyone grabbed me like that I'd fold so fuckin fast 😳 On another note, it's probably intentional but I really thought Joel was Meredith's dad by this point lol so I had to make Ethan say just that in the fic
Tumblr media
This is another interesting shot because Meredith comes into focus and waves of course, but that's also when Matty and Johnson come into focus as well ;w; he could very much be looking at them and then notice that she was there too (which is how I wrote it) just as much as him looking at her while they happen to be walking by, but of course my bet's on the former cause I love them. I'm also madly in love with the track that plays during this scene it's so damn good
Tumblr media
They're looking at each other in the mirror 😭 and Matty was already looking before Ethan I can't take thiiiis
Tumblr media
It's the end of the first episode are they trying to kill everyone watching?? Cause that certainly nearly happened to me when I saw Johnson looking like this godDAMN also Matty in a tie is the cutest thing I've ever seen I love how all three of them dress so much 🥰
And that's it for episode 1! I used up almost/all my pics/gifs in all three of these and I could've used so many more just on those Matty scenes, thankfully not as much happens in the future so I should be good sans probably the finale which might need two or more depending on how much I cry over the big reveal ;w; ❤️💛💙

warnings/info : Smut, squirting (hehe), Cursing, Gay people, ibara. probably badly qrotten because eim bore
music 2 listen 2 : wine pon you - doja cat, taste - skz, I can love you - Mary j. Blige
notes : tbh I've been watching alot of gay japanese porn w squirting in it and its.... very hot. oh shit I ant even realize you said thirts... why is the word dick so funny, going over this makes everything funny because it's Christmas eve... anyways merry Hanukkah Christmas or whatever your religion is!!!! Holy shit I love RM. Tbh I'm not even following the chart I made for ibara cause he's my fav.. I hate the word towel
Tumblr media
Ibara couldnt keep his eyes off of you. He always had his mind on you, he was hypnotized by you! You looked amazing In his eyes, even if you hadn't had your hair done yet. Even if you wore your dirty band t-shirt. Yet yuzuru was your brother, and he couldn't deal with that. ibara had brought you to the mall to get your hair done, You really wanted [style]. once you were done, You immediately thanked him with a big hug and a Tiny kiss.
ibara swore he saw the light, bro felt like he was levitating . "thank you so much! I really reeaally needed this.. yuzurus gonna be so happy now that he know' I got my hair done!" You always talked about your brother, and he wanted you to talk about him instead. "so.. How about we.. Uh" Ibara never was this nervous, his palms were clammy, and he was sweating way more. " ibara? what were you sayin'?" you asked, and ibara Just played it of as nothing and dragged you somewhere nervously. before you knew it you and him were infront of a fountain, a very special one.
"y-yn. I have something to tell you. I, Ibara saegusa. has a crush on You, The yuzuru fushimis little brother." he explained, Ready to get rejected. but he didn't, all he could feel was your lips on his, Your arms around him. "I love you ibara.. I love you so m-much!" You didn't think you would get this emotional because of a small confession, maybe it's because ibara is your long time crush? Just maybe... after the whole.. scenario, You got in his car, smiling underneath your hands. You didn't know where he was taking the both of you, all you could think about is how you were no longer single!!!!
after you and ibara got there, To his house. He let you out and parked the car, coming back and picking you up like a gentleman.. I guess. ibara immediately brought you to his bedroom, not even saying hi to anyone. you can guess where this is going
he layed you down and immediately asked for consent ( consent is 🔑) and you nodded your head, slowly becoming hard in your pants. You started to pull of your shirt as ibara worked down your pants, taking them off. Then he got to his own clothes, Taking them of slowly, teasing you. You moved your hand down to your cock, Starting to stroke it to hardness. ibara admired your face, smirking. Once he was finished he walked over and basically pinned you onto the bed. Motioning for you to lift your legs, and you obliged just wanting him to fuck you already. ibara slowly stuck his middle finger inside of your hole, making sure to not hurt you
once he was done preparing you, he eased himself inside of you. making sure to move slowly to make you feel every inch. " please... please just fuck me- ngh..! " Ibara shived the rest of his dick inside of you, Letting you adjust once he was fully inside. praising you for how well you take him. it hasn't even been a whole minute and your already grinding on him, Begging for him to move. ibara wanted to give you everything you needed, you ask, he delivers. he thrusted into you at a comfortable pace, Praise was thrown around, moans were heard and soon enough, you were cumming.
"a-ah wait wait cummin' ! I'm cumming- N-ngah...!" You moaned loudly, Squirting all over your stomach is that d that good?? Ibara immediately stopped and laughed, because he thought this thing only happened In porn, To women.. You layed there embarrassed because... you literally just squirt, Ibara Continued to move, just a little bit faster. Goddammit it felt so good, all you could do was moan and grind back into him, begging for him to just cum inside of you already. But again, you were cumming. "yn, is it- ngh.. Is it okay if i cum inside?" As soon as you heard that, you nodded so fast, If you were a dog your tail would be wagging at the speed of light, It was cute. Ibara lifted your leg over his shoulder and continued his assault on your hole, making sure to hit your sweet spot. Finally stilling his hips and cumming inside of you, moving with shallow thrusts. And that triggered your orgasm, you squirt again, but farther this time. The amount was larger too, your eyes rolled back into your skull as you came. Whining and moaning
After ibara stopped moving his hips he grabbed a spare towel he had before the session started and wiped you down, once he was finished ibara gave you a short kiss on your forehead. You shifted slightly, wiping sweat from your face. Whiny voice asking for ibara to cuddle, because who doesn't love After sex cuddles?!
Falling asleep in ibaras arms, As he whispered sweet nothings in your ear.
Tumblr media
Finished dthsi while crying😹😹😹😹 also the ending came from my fucking ASS!!

WIP Tag Game
RULES: Make a new post with the names of all the files in your WIP folder, regardless of how non-descriptive or ridiculous. Let people send you an ask with the title that most intrigues them, and then post a little snippet or tell them something about it! And then tag as many people as you have WIPs.
I am still working on a number of the same WIPs, so I'll talk about progress and priorities a bit to make it more interesting. Also, I make art as well as fic, so I'll tag a few artists. Please note: I'm tagging you only because I love your work. Absolutely no worries if you don't wish to post! Also, please, anyone looking at this--please jump in if you like💖 @magicians4time @vooruitmariek @itsminimes @violetsarepurple-fuckyou @wolfnprey
also tagging (please stop being funny about this, Tumblr!!!)
@bravelostgirl @cyprianlatewood @jessalae @lovequeliot @springybreak
okay Tumblr, I have your number, thank you, also tagging

All my WIPs are The Magicians, specifically Queliot fanfic/fanart.
I'm super, beyond excited to announce we've started working on this project again! So dear to my heart! I'm illustrating the brilliant fic by @magicians4time
We Could Build a Castle - EliotQueliot, Librarity - The Magicians (TV) [Archive of Our Own]
2. I'm making art for every still photo on the AO3 side of my collection of haiku about the Mosaic life of Eliot and Quentin. This is a long-term project. There are going to be more than a hundred paintings in it when I'm done. So far I've posted nine of them. My aim is to add something, some touch, some light and color, an expression, to each scene. (There will also be more haiku eventually!)

(the photos I'll be painting are visible in the Tumblr mirror chapters)
3. I have a Secret Queliot Novel collaboration project with a beloved Queliot artist. I'm working on the middle chapter right now. The "finished" chapters are about 80k so far. Teaser: it concerns a mix of book and show to retell the Keys Boat Quest!
4. Ongoing and very important to me, I just posted Ch. 4 for this AU:
you want it darker? || dark king eliot - EliotQueliot, victoriaandalbert - The Magicians (TV) [Archive of Our Own]
It's a challenging fic to write, so I got slowed down a bit, but in general I try to post a chapter every other month.
5. I'm actively working on the next chapter of this. Hoping it will be the next fic chapter I post:
Sailing to Blackspire - EliotQueliot - The Magicians (TV) [Archive of Our Own]
Below are the rest of my WIPs, basically in the order they appear in my list of works on AO3. I'm making art for some of them. I'll finish all of them. I just have so much going on! Also, I have ideas sketched out for quite a number of Queliot fanfic and fanart pieces after these. Just trying to maintain some kind of order in all this chaos!
6. ...Baby One More Time - EliotQueliot - The Magicians (TV) [Archive of Our Own]
This will be short but needs a few chapters. Time loops!
7. All We Need Is One Good Day (Any Day That You're Alive) - EliotQueliot - The Magicians (TV) [Archive of Our Own]
One more chapter and another moodboard to go!
8. Secret Lives - EliotQueliot - The Magicians (TV) [Archive of Our Own]
Several more chapters, it seems. I have a rough outline and a number of scenes sketched out.
9. The First Duty of All Magicians Is to Save Their Friends (with Art) - EliotQueliot - The Magicians (TV) [Archive of Our Own]
Making art for every chapter! The next chapter you read will earn the E-rating!
10. Eliot Rocks the Memory Palace (with Art) - EliotQueliot - The Magicians (TV) [Archive of Our Own]
Oh, so many chapters to go, can't wait to fully write them! I have many, many scenes sketched or partly written. A few more pieces of art to make.
11. How They Met Themselves (with Art) - EliotQueliot - The Magicians (TV) [Archive of Our Own]
The drawing and scenario are posted. I'll be painting it. I might even write a tiny fic to go with it.
12. Going South (with Art) - EliotQueliot - The Magicians (TV) [Archive of Our Own]
I have a number of scenes written and a lot of plot sketched out. Will also be making a few more piece of art.
13. The Once and Future Kings of Fillory - EliotQueliot - The Magicians (TV) [Archive of Our Own]
Lots of draft, but it's going in a different direction than I planned. We'll see if I can get it back on track.
14. The fic for this one is finished, but I'm slowly working on painting the art for
How Did That Basket of Peaches Get There? Or, A Secret Royal Wedding, Bitches! (with Art) - EliotQueliot - The Magicians (TV) [Archive of Our Own]
15. The painting is finished, but at some point I'll write the fic for
Secret Admirers (Art) - EliotQueliot - The Magicians (TV) [Archive of Our Own]
16. Mosaic Mendings - EliotQueliot - The Magicians (TV) [Archive of Our Own]
I have some plot notes. But it turns out there's a lot more to this story than anticipated!

hey Valen, umm, 🍕🥑🍎?
hey what's up, thanks for coming to hang out!
🍕 What's your favorite comment you've received on a fic?
oh fuck this is a hard question, because i don't think anything could have prepared me for the overwhelmingly kind things people had to say about without sun. i still haven't replied to any of the comments i've gotten on that fic bc when i scroll through them, i feel like my brain shuts down for a moment. i look at them and think, they can't be talking about me. they can't be talking about my story, my writing. but they are, and what the fuck am i even supposed to do with that, yk? every comment i've gotten on that fic feels like my favourite comment i've ever gotten. someone told me it was heartbreaking. someone told me my depiction of the mage was complex and intimidating. someone called my prose lovely, aching and beautiful. someone said the atmosphere was deeply haunting, that they hope i write for this fandom forever, that one of my scenes captured something extremely magic and extremely human and universal at the same time. i keep seeing all these words—visceral, melancholy, gorgeous, immersive. and i just, holy fuck. holy fuck. holy fuck? so yeah, i dunno, i really can't pick a favourite. (i have another fic i posted several years ago now, and every year since i've gotten an annual comment from the same user telling me that they still love the story, and that means a lot to me, too.)
🥑 What are you currently working on?
my main wips at the moment are: - without sun, a magickal mishap story in which simon snow accidentally curses the entirety of watford into thinking he's dead, allowing him to take a look into the lives of the people he loves most to see how they would handle a world without him, only for him to discover the reality of grief is not what he expected it to be. - ballad of the final sparrow, also known as bitverse. a non-magical alternate universe, set in small-town ontario, in which simon snow's mother has died, his best friend is moving away, he's pretty sure his girlfriend is ghosting him, and his father won't get off the couch. in other words: his life is falling apart, and to make it worse, he can't seem to get any sleep. he begins to spend his nights scrolling the back corners of the internet, diving through abandoned web forums and exploring old, innocuous threads. then, one night, he stumbles across the link to a private domain titled BAZ.ai/chatroom-1. this fic is unposted, but it's one of the most bleak, visceral stories i've ever attempted to write. - fragile things (and how to break them), once upon a time known as there's a werewolf in london. i talked about the plot at length before here, if you're curious, but something about it i don't think i mentioned in the orig post is how much of the story is actually a journey about baz and his vampirism, about him learning what it means to accept and be accepted, finding family in strange places, and discovering that sometimes true happiness starts with letting go.
🍎 How do you prioritize which stories to work on when you have multiple ideas?
and i answered this one here
[ask me things!]

It's an end-of-the-year recap!!!! And what a year it has been! Thank you, @fellowshipofthefics, for putting together this wonderful recap list! Thank you from the bottom of my heart to all the people who have supported me on my writing journey this past year. The Bagginshield fandom has been a haven filled with some of the kindest and most talented people I have had the pleasure of getting to know.
I look forward to another year with all of you.
Let's begin!
~~~~
What is something new you tried with your writing this year?
This was my first year as a fic writer, so everything was something new! I was really focused on building the "voice" of my writing, and I think I did that.
Did you participate in any fandom events?
Oh yes. I did the Thorin Spring Forge (TSF), Kinktober, and The Hobbit: An Unexpected Collaboration (THAUC). I also did about half a dozen drabble events and fotfics monthly events.
What's been your favorite project to work on?
There were not many, but I think for me my favorite was the TSF event. It was a big chance to produce my first ever long-format fic, and the reception it got was more than I could have imagined. You Should Be Safe With Me now sits as my highest kudo's fic.
What was the hardest project to work on?
Sparks & Gardens, for sure. The story is one I'm in love with, but bringing it to life in a way that does it justice can be a struggle sometimes. A struggle I enjoy, oddly enough.
Did you start any projects?
Too many.
Did you finish any projects?
I did! Happy Accidents is a completed Modern AU trilogy.
How many WIPS do you have now?
Four (two posted to AO3)
Share your favorite scene/line!
In chapter three of You Should Be Safe With Me, Thorin busts into Bard's house because he thinks harm is befalling Bilbo. I love how gentle and soft Thorin is when helping Bilbo in that scene.
Share your favorite story title!
I'm very fond of Not Yours To Touch. It took me forever to name that fic!
What does your writing system look like? (i.e. brainstorming, writing, editing - how do you do it?)
Usually, it starts with a scene I like or a general concept. Then, I daydream about it a little and determine if it's a one-shot idea or a long-format idea. One shot, I start writing and see where the idea takes me. Long format I start jotting down ideas in bullet form until I have a really rough outline. Then, I flesh that out until I have a plot. When I have a series of events in order, I want them to happen with maybe a few vague details I start writing. I pause and reread/ rough edit after every chapter and check that my continuity is still good. When it's all done, I ignore it for a few days and re-read it again, then edit. Then it's off to my lovely beta reader, who edits and tells me if something doesn't make sense. Once I get that stamp of approval, I post.
What's the best atmosphere for you to write?
Left alone and quiet
Any particular snacks or drinks while writing?
I'm a beverage girly. I have water, coffee, and some fruit near me at all times. I don't normally snack and write. Most of the time, if I'm writing, I've forgotten to eat.
Do you form playlists/soundtracks for your stories? Or even just for your "writing time"?
Playlist, not really. As I said above, I prefer absolute silence when I write. I do have Pinterest boards for all my WIP's, however.
What advice would you give to a new writer?
You're going to have to be bad at it before you become good at it. So be bad at it and enjoy the process.
What are some goals you have for 2024?
Finish Sparks and Gardens. Finish reputation be damned, and if I'm really lucky, debut my Biker Gang AU. But really just to have fun.
Last but not least, General stats
Words posted to AO3 this year: 191,187
Fics posted to AO3: 22 (all but one was Bagginshield)
Current active WIP's: 2
I can't wait to see what 2024 brings, and I couldn't have done this without you.
20 asks for fic writers
Thank you for tagging me, @fruityindividual, @lynxindisguise, @butcherbacterium & @spindrifters <333
1. How many works do you have on ao3?
14
2. what's your total ao3 word count?
56,757
3. What fandoms do you write for?
HP Marauders.
4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
The Killing Time (unwillingly mine) aka murder husbands
Now I'm Spreading Your Legs (with mine in between) aka the original hatefuck
soft like silk chiffon aka silk slip Remus
back when we were dinosaurs aka museum
Rolling In The Deep aka divorced sopping wet wolfstar
5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
Yes, of course!! I love getting comments, they sustain me. I need them to live.
6. What is a fic you wrote with the angstiest ending
Oh, hmm. I try to give all my fics a somewhat happy ending. I guess my blood is singing with your voice, which is my Midsommar au...I think you can guess how that ends.
7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
I think that museum will probably win this once it's finished, but for now I would say I Knew Your Love Before I Knew Your Name and You Grew Tall (I Stayed The Same).
8. Do you get hate on fics?
So far no. I have received some weird feedback before, but nothing hateful.
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
hahaha Listen. When I started writing fic I was like "I will never write smut, it's too hard to do it right." and then the first fic I published was my original hatefuck fic. 🤷 In fact, I think I'm best known for my Hatefuck Extended Universe series.
10. Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you've written?
I have not, I don't really think it's for me.
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Not that I'm aware of. Like Lynx said, I think there are a lot of themes and motifs that float around the fandom so inevitably you're going to find something that is similar to yours. I have had people reach out and ask if they can write something inspired by my fic or like, with a similar theme (murder husbands) and I really appreciated the asking.
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
Not yet! I don't know how I feel about it...there's no way for me to ensure that they have kept the story the same, ya know? I guess it would be a case by case basis.
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
B, Kels and I started a sort of Miami Vice AU, but it sort of fell to the side. It was fun to collaborate, but we collaborate on every fic we write anyways, so.
In general, I don't think I'm the right person to co-write with because my muse is so fickle and comes and goes. I wouldn't want to let anyone down.
14. What's your all-time favorite ship?
Wolfstar at the moment! I will always be an everlark shipper though.
15. What's a wip you want to finish, but doubt you ever will?
I have had a wolfstar girldads au sitting in my notes app forever and I would love to write it, but the muse never sticks around for long. I also have a soulmate au that I started but will likely never finish. I think my take is unique, but I've just never been able to figure out how I could make it work.
16. What are your writing strengths?
Oh, I guess I have a really good grasp on the characters I'm trying to write, and I think I'm also good at humour. Also if you need a flowery metaphor, I'm your girl.
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
World building. I'm just incredibly lazy and not that imaginative. I also have terrible grammar. I use em-dashes to hide that fact that I have no idea how to correctly use a semi-colon.
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?
I mean I would do it, but only if I had a friend who could proof-read for me. The last thing I want to do is write something in another language that takes a native speaker out of the fic entirely.
The title of my fic In ár gCroíthe go deo is Irish, but it's also a song title from Fontaines DC so I didn't have to worry about that so much.
19. First fandom you wrote for?
This one! Marauders. I've only been writing since April.
20. Favourite fic you've written?
The ones I'm most proud of are The Killing Time (unwillingly mine) and back when we were dinosaurs.
no pressure tagging: @kaleidoscopexsighs, @grimjobs, @vajazzly, @crushofdoves, @greenvlvetcouch, @sommerregenjuniluft, @cancerravenclaw, @facewithoutheart, @sheisraging , @achilleslikespeas, @hihimissamericanbi, @colgatebluemintygel and @thefairylights
For the asks thing: 4, 7, 8, 13, 15, 16, 20, 22?
A couple of these I've already answered, so I'll link the previous answers - that's on me because I was slow responding to these asks!
4. How many WIPs do you have right now?
Oh god, actual WIPs? Well, posted I have... six for Imodna and one for supercorp. If we include docs that have chapters partially written? Then it goes up to I think 11 for imodna and four for supercorp.
TECHNICALLY. However, I am lowkey working on new chapters for Eyes on Me and Let the Pieces Fall into Place which make it eight posted WIPs for imodna, or 13 total WIPs for imodna.
7. How many ideas for fics do you have right now?
Answered here!
8. What project(s) are you currently working on?
Imodna first:
All the posted WIPs: When the Stars Go Out, Dolcissimo, Set the World on Fire, Before the Body Decays, All I Want for Winter's Crest, and Let's Get Out of This Town.
Then there's Eyes on Me and Let the Pieces Fall into Place which are unofficial WIPs. Technically, they're oneshots and complete, but their docs have new content under new chapters so. We'll see.
Finally, the secret ones I'm working on:
Supercorp-wise:
Slow It Down (the only one posted so far), Shatter Me (just needs another round of editing), En Garde (sidenote I love fencing and I hope to find a different title), Three, Working Title I (I'll just say: tattoos), and Working Title II (angst. much angst).
13. How much planning do you do before writing?
Depends on the fic and depends on the chapter. When I first start a fic, sometimes I need an outline doc right away and I'll work on that until I've exhausted the initial idea and spark, just try to use that fire while I can. Sometimes the fic gets away from me and then I need to make an outline doc later instead of a handful of notes at the end of the fic doc.
In terms of sitting down to write a chapter, sometimes I have a series of bullet points of things to hit in the chapter, but more often than not, there's a line or two of notes at the end of the doc to remind me what I want to include/where I'm going and that's enough.
Lots of research happens as I go, though, which I think some people do in advance and thus might constitute planning, but I prefer to do in the moment.
15. How do you come up with titles for your fics/chapters?
Answered here!
16. At what point in the process do you come up with titles?
Oh boy. Okay. The rarest point of all is at the beginning, but once in a blue moon it happens. In general, I prefer to come up with them at the end - harder for a multi-chapter situation where I try to find something that embodies the overall vibe. When the Stars Go Out is such a long title, but it fit the vibe of what I want the fic to be, and I stumbled into it trying to think romantic and philosophical thoughts when I'd finished the first chapter. Dolcissimo on the other hand has been titled since the outlining stage where I got deep into a glossary of music notation terms and promptly titled the fic, each chapter, and the sequel and its chapters.
20. What’s a favorite title for a fic you’ve written?
If/Then for sure because it kind of fell into my lap after some trial and error and it fits SO WELL. In my humble opinion, of course.
22. Do you know how your fic will end before you start writing?
In general, yes. Some fics I have a specific vision and others there might be a particular scene or an emotion I want the reader to come away with. Do I know every detail about the ending? Absolutely not. I haven't seen in-depth a ton of others' processes, but I think I write from a fairly bare bones outline. The act of writing - the typing and the finding the words as I go - really impacts and shapes what comes out. Like. Something happens during the times where my fingers clicky clack against the keyboard and I can't really explain it, but I have, often, a vague goal and my keystrokes get me there. Sometimes far later or after many more words than anticipated.
Are you curious about something? You can ask me stuff, too! Here's the list of questions, but my ask box is always open!
Heyy! 9, 14, 15, 16, 22 and 23 for the fanfic writer ask! That's a lot but I'm curious about your routine :p
Thank you so much for the ask!! This is wonderful, so many fun things to answer.
I'm wordy so under the cut u go
9: Do you write every day? If so, share a sentence of what you've written.
I try to do at least a chapter a day! A chapter for me is about 3-4k words or 10 pages double spaces 12 pt font. Work and life sometimes keep me from it though.
About a chapter a day helps me draft, its my least favorite part of wriring but if I'm like, well this has to be done today, it can help take pressure off it being good and to just get the events down.
Here's a passage from resonance, my Naruto and Soul Eater crossover.
" "Oh?” Kabuto adjusted his grip, smile untouched. “I figured Konoha would send someone a little more. Hm, how do I put it? Graceful.”
Ok, Naruto was going to murder this guy. Kabuto laughed, and Naruto could almost believe he was actually amused.
His glasses slid down his nose, letting Naruto see his eyes. Kabuto's smile grew. “Looking at me like that, you must really think you’re scary.” "
14: If I could have any fic adapted to a visual medium, which would it be?
This one was tough. Uhm. I wanna say LP; Eternity because it's probably the most visually interesting of my fics? I actually played with my descriptions a bit there. It's so long though, 101k.
Maybe "under the skin", I feel like it could make a cute comic or short film.
15: How do I come up with fic or chapter titles?
Usually I don't use chapter titles. Fic titles, it varies. A lot of my shorter fics I try to pick an unusual word, like "Misconstruction". Sometimes I try to go for what's generally happening like "Happy New Years". An idea of the theme or overall arc, "Learning to Care" and my "Loyalty's Price" series too. I want to go for more song lyrics so I can throw song reccs in my authors notes.
Despite not generally using chapter titles I plan on using a portal reference chapter title in late LP.
16: At what point in the process do I come up with titles?
The very end usually. Sometimes after I tagged and wrote the summary for the thing. LP was "Kabuto fanfic" in my drafts until the last second. Sometimes something comes to me sooner like "Resonance" but it's rare.
22: Do I know how fics will end before I start them?
A lot of the time yes. I'd say a good majority of my fics are very short so I have an ending image in mind at least.
Loyalty's Price is my first super long series and I've known the ending I want since I started writing it. Just didn't know if I wanted to write the middle.
Resonance stands out a bit, I immediately knew the beginning and the middle but I'm still a bit stuck on the ending. I could go bittersweet to straight up downer. I wonder how people will react to it.
23: How do you chose where to end a chapter?
This made me think because I'm not really sure. Usually I suppose I have a good sense of ending points? More an instinctual, "this event has gone on long enough" I try to write chapters to focus on a sorta main idea like "how does Kabuto adapt to xyz" so once that's run its course, I suppose.
If anyone else wants to send me asks!!!
20 questions for fic writers
Thanks for the tag, @rebelrayne!
How many works do you have on ao3?
I've got 40 which is still wild to me
What's your total ao3 word count?
970,161 - I'm inching closer to the million word mark (and have the remaining 30k needed in my drafts just waiting to be published)
What fandoms do you write for?
Love Island the Game, and I'm working on my first oneshot for the Romance Club fandom (Song of the Crimson Nile)
Top five fics by kudos:
Whiskey & Scotch (it'll never be surpassed)
it's just a crush
Amelia Can't Win (the S6 effect, I still can't believe this one is top 3 already ahead of a few of my other chaptered fics)
not the only one
Convince Me (the only oneshot in my top 5, the effect of writing a smutty oneshot while season it's about is still ongoing)
Do you respond to comments?
Absolutely!
What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
I have a few contenders here but I'm gonna go with anatomy of a heartbreak. it's literally in the title, so you were warned
What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
erm, most of them? some of them even end with a happy ending, if you know what I mean 😏
Serious answer though, probably it's just a crush, because not only did it end the misery I put my readers through (it's a slow, slow, slow burn, folks), but I think it's the only one of my fics that ends with a proposal (I think. I've written 40 of them, you can't expect me to remember them all, can you?)
Do you get hate on fics?
Yep, every time @mrsbsmooth reads one of my unfinished drafts and gets mad that it's not finished yet /j
But actually, surprisingly, no. Either I'm not relevant enough for the haters to notice me, or everyone's scared of me.
That or I don't write anything controversial enough to warrant strong opinions 🙃
Do you write smut?
Yes, although I hate myself every time because I suck at metaphors and pretty words and all the stuff that really elevates other writers' smut
Craziest crossover:
When the Dead Come Knocking is LITG x The Walking Dead
Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Not that I'm aware of, but I'd probably be more flattered than anything (nah probably not, I'd come after you with guns blazing)
Have you ever had a fic translated?
Nope
Have you ever co-written a fic before?
*sigh* I started a collab on a oneshot before but my cowriter ghosted the fandom. It was a Kassam x Felix undercover spy ETL with Chelsea as a crime boss and it would have been hilarious
All time favourite ship?
I mean, obviously Henrik/me. I mean, Henrik/MC. But if we're talking 2 LITG characters, then Henrik/Lucas is OTP
What's a wip you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
Technically this is not applicable - I have every intention of finishing my 3 active WIPs (Whiskey & Wildflowers, Amelia Can't Win, and Luc & Hen's Sexcellent Kinkventure), and I prefer not to start new chaptered fics until I finish other ones (which often means my fics are in the idea stage for literally years before I even start writing them).
That said, I have a few chaptered fic ideas in various stages of production that I'm not sure I'll end up writing. idk if those count as WIPs (one of them is half-outlined and I've jotted down a few paragraphs, but I have to rework it)
What are your writing strengths?
Honestly, I'm not entirely sure. I've been told I'm good at pacing, and I've been told I'm good at angst - but what strengths make me good at those things are, I don't really know.
Oh, wait. Spelling, grammar, and punctuation. I rock at those.
What are your writing weaknesses?
Dialogue, for one. My biggest struggle in all of my fics (and what I find extremely daunting when starting something new) is dialogue. I never know what my characters should talk about when it's not distinctly plot-related, especially group scenes. Some people are so good at writing fresh dialogue that just breathes so much life into the characters and displays their personality and keeps the reader engaged, and that's something I'd love to do better (both in fics and in real life, tbh - I'm a wallflower)
Secondly, character development. I've literally written over 500k words for one of my OCs, yet I hardly know who she is outside of the villa. I know her struggles and much of her backstory, but I don't know what her hobbies are, what gets her up in the morning, what she likes to eat, what she listens to, etc. I think this also plays a part in my dialogue struggles - it's hard to write characters if I don't know them
Third, and related to number two, is character arcs/relationship arcs. Sure, I can come up with a storyline and write it in such a way that it's enjoyable. But what makes a story extra compelling is the character arcs, watching the characters grow and learn things about themselves and seeing how that meshes with another character and their flaws/strengths and it all comes together like puzzle pieces. I'm not good at that, but I want to be
tl;dr - my biggest weakness is that I'm not Emily Henry
Thoughts on dialogue in another language?
My favourite love interests are Swedish and Portuguese 🤣 and yes, I love having them slip into their native tongues every once in awhile, or use terms of endearments, etc. I try to be as accurate as possible and give the readers a glossary (though sometimes I'm lazy with that), but it's also usually just little things that you can kind of tell what they're saying from the context
First fandom you wrote in?
Love Island the Game. Other than RC, it might be my last, too
Favourite fic you've written?
I hate this question 🤣 I have 40 fics and I love them all in their own way. It's like asking someone to pick their favourite child
Hello 👋🏻
Hi ! I hope I'm not bothering you. Just wanted to pop into your ask box and tell you that I really enjoy reading your fics! I've been a fan of pedro pascal for some time now and I really really love reading your take!! Esp on Javi in liar liar! It was really funny and you made me laugh so much! Thank you so much for writing and sharing !! I really hope you write more soon! I can't wait to read 🖤
I saw you shared an ask game?? I had some questions? if you don't mind answering that is because I know its been some time since you posted it? Feel free to ignore it if you want.
15 16 29 34 39 41 and finally 69 for Liar Liar
Sorry if they're a lot you dont have to answer all of them! I just couldn't resist.
I love your work ! Hope you have a great day! 🖤
Tumblr media
okay so i had to take a minute to read this and reread it and reread it again. You are absolutely NOT bothering me -- I read this after a particularly humbling day at work, and wow, I thought about it the rest of the day. Thank you SO MUCH for reading my work! I am so touched that you are a seasoned pp reader and you find my take unique! It's hard out here for a fic writer so messages like this truly make all the frustration and head-banging that comes with writing really worth it. 💗 you are so sweet and i hope there are good things for you to look forward to!
As for the ask game, I am more than happy to play! :) And if you'd like, you don't have to wait for those games to come around if you have a question about a fic or would like an update! My ask box is always open! Here's your questions:
15. What’s your favorite time to write?
Probably the mornings. I like the mornings the best in general and there's nothing better than starting the day with a good writing flow!
16. Do you write by hand, on your phone, or on your laptop?
oh man, laptop every single time. I write notes or ideas to myself on my phone when I'm in bed and the brain waves are pulsing, but I could never write long form on anything but my computer. I know writers who write everything down first AND THEN type them -- to me that is like god tier writing process. I am a weak, weak woman.
29. What’s something about your writing that you’re proud of?
When I make people laugh. Call it my "fawning" instincts, but I always try and make people laugh in different social situations -- to varying degrees of success. So when people laugh at my dumb jokes in fic, I'm really pleased with myself!
34. How much of your personal life/experience do you include in your fics?
😬 oof y'all are gonna be able to spot my kinks after this. But honestly, it depends on which fandom/situation I'm writing for. I wrote a Midnight Mass fic that was very, very personal to my experiences growing up in Texas around Catholics. On the other hand, I don't have the guts to be, uh, so public as the reader in 'blood makes noise'. I think most of my reader characters are a mix of myself and who I want to be.
39. What’s your most self-indulgent wip?
(oh, honey, they all are) i think it's a tie between (working title) Living Dead Girl, where reader becomes Max's blood donor and (working title) Riders of the Purple Sapir, where Din and reader go on a quest for vengeance against the men who killed her father. The cowboy goth in me is REAL excited about both of those.
41. Who’s your favorite character you’ve written?
Max is quickly becoming the little bug in my ear about most things. He has such a distinctive personality from other Pedro boys, I love it so much. All his little faces kill me.
But I've said this to a friend -- i think half the fun writing for the pedro boys is coming up with a reader character that perfectly meshes with them. What personality traits would drive them up the goddamn walls? What do they need to feel fulfilled in a partner? So if "reader" can count as a character, I really liked the reader in Go Ahead, I Dare Ya and Recovery Road. Just as insane as their counterparts.
69. What are your favorite fics at the moment?
YES YES YES i get to GUSH about the fics that have me gnawing at my cage bars:
Psychomanteum by @whatsnewalycat is literally everything I want in a fic. perfect extensions of the characters from the source media. new problems for them that make you see more facets of their personalities. so.must.fantastic.smut it makes me want to scream. the angst and the grief and the literal haunting of a dead spouse - or a spouse that you lost but maybe didn't ever actually have adsfaksldjf GHOSTS I LOVE GHOSTS. i cannot recommend this fic enough. i am on my hands and knees begging people to read it.
This one isn't pedro specific, but @astroboots's Every Me Every You is like my kryptonite. Every new chapter hits me in a place that I didn't know could hurt while being such a fun throw back to the good ol' days of the MCU. i feel like it's written specifically for those of us who were on tumblr during the 2012 avengers take over. Good times.
For just the sweetest, gentlest Dieter Bravo, please consider @stardustandskycrystals 's Curls. I stumbled across it one night before bed and I was up until like 2AM to finish it. It's adorable and I just need them all to be okay forever and happy and little Charlie is basically my child at this point. Oof!
*takes you by the shoulders* if you even remotely like Prospect or the sci fi genre, I am BEGGING YOU to read Compulsion by @iamskyereads. Like. Like. I cannot formulate words to express how fantastic this piece of fiction is. I want to leave detailed, thoughtful comments but my mind just goes blank after reading it. Her work is truly a staggering piece of world-building and character development. I cannot believe this art is just free for me to consume. i am . . . undone by how good it is. (you should also read her Lie To Me series, insanely good too)
I KNOW i'm missing some so if I forgot yours I am SO SORRY FOR BEING AN IDIOT.
This response ended up being way longer than intended but I hope this show how much messages like these matter to me. Thank you again for reading and I hope my future fics don't disappoint you!
18, 22, and 29 for the fic asks, please!
18 - Do you title your fics before, during, or after the writing process? How do you come up with titles?
Oh this so, so depends on the fic, in part because every once and a while an excellent title descends upon me early in the process and also if I'm working on a fic for a while I have more time to think.
Usually my fics start out with placeholder titles that are whatever came to mind when I first saved the document; I'm yet to have one of those graduate to being a final title but that's partially because they're all things like this:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
...and are often tonally different than what I'm actually going for.
As far as where my titles end up actually coming from, poems are a common culprit; I've got one or two song lyric ones, and some inspired by various other cultural references (ranging from like... pop cultural to Biblical). I tend to try to work in some wordplay, irony, or symbolism where I can, and love a title with layers.
Breaking down a couple recent ones:
Beharren ist eine Kunst -- German for "Persistence is an art," stemming from the longer proverb "Anfangen ist leicht, Beharren eine Kunst" (Beginning is easy, persistence an art), works particularly well for a story about an artist where "Kunst" doubles as a bit of a play on words.
Stemma Codicum -- A textual criticism term referring to the chart that can be drawn of different manuscripts relationship to each other (what was copied from what, where changes entered into the manuscript transmission process, and etc). Worked really well for a Pentiment fic about three "alternate timelines" all branching from a single change at a specific point in canon -- manuscript transmission as a metaphor for those critical points in people's lives that manage to change everything!
Long Upon the Land -- A tongue-in-cheek reference to Exodus 20:12, which reads ""Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee"," as a title for a fic in which a character with an overbearing abusive father contemplates art and things that can outlast us across generations. Really loved the irony with this one, it's one of my favorites I've come up with in a while.
Needless to say they draw from all over the places, but I feel like between them it's pretty easy to get a feel for what I like in titles.
22 - Are there certain types of writing you won’t do? (style, pov, genre, tropes, etc)
I don't want to say there's for sure something I won't do, just because it seems like there's exceptions to everything (Pentiment wrung a "Major Character Death" warning tag out of me which is a new one!), but in general I am pretty allergic to most romance tropes. I'll write romantic relationships -- although my fics rarely center on them, but that's one of those things I'd be willing to assume might have an exception one day -- but when I do, they tend not to be particularly trope-y. There's just a lot of amatonormativity steeped into ideas like soulmates, fake dating, etc, and I'm not interested enough in them to consider ways to rehabilitate them in my own writing. I am but a tired aro and while it means I'll never write the most popular fic in any fandom I'm in, I get by perfectly fine in my little gen niche.
I'm also not a big fan of writing in first person (reading can go either way! I'm less into it in fic unless the canon itself is in first person, but fine with it in original fiction), but even that one has an exception on the horizon! If and when I finally write my TOH Sherlock Holmes pastiche, it'll probably be in first person, to mimic the original source material. So really that's a great example of why I have a pretty solidly "never say never" stance on most non-romantic tropes and devices.
29 - What’s your revision or editing process like?
I have a horrible confession to make. I edit as I go. My terrible perfectionist brain struggles to make peace with messy first drafts, and while I'll often give things a final, editor's eye read-through once I've finished writing, the bulk of my editing happens on repeated re-readings of the material throughout the writing process.
This is not a good way of doing things and I would love to break the habit, particularly since I think it would result in me writing more and faster. Do as I say, not as I do, everyone.
hey! im actually really interested in your writing process tbh. i know you have a graveyard full of fic ideas, but how do you go about it when the inspiration strikes? do you stop what you're doing and write it down straight away? or do you let it process in your head for a few days?
whats happening up there in the lottiecrabie control room?
🖤 lastnightwaskindofablur (this is my second account and you cant send asks from it so i have go to anon-mode? literally why?!)
i am rubbing my feet together like a cricket after reading this ask Oh i love talking about my writing process. thank you for asking!!
it depends, but in general if i have an idea even if it’s vague i note it down in my Hot Sauce List which is just. a collection of ideas i keep if i don’t know what to write and also to have the satisfaction of checking a wip. for example you might recognize some of these titles lmao
Tumblr media
most of the ideas in hot sauce are things i am almost 100% sure i won’t actually get around to writing, but i like to keep if i ever lack inspiration. i already instinctively know which ones i'm interested in actually writing and i start them by just going at it. every single one of my graveyard fics was just something i sprouted out of my brain quickly with little plan beyond the vague lines or themes or faraway scenes i might have thought of. galatea, take one started as just this jack and lorde inspired fic with the theme of cheating, and i wrote the first few scenes completely aimless. i didn't find the overarching plot until, as i've said, i randomly stumbled onto the concept of galatea for a song. pfms1 and pfms2 i wrote in a sitting with just Religious kink in head.
but then, if i write it more or start daydreaming about it regularly, i end up with very precise plans. they're always changing as i delete the parts i've written and add new ideas as i think them. for example, here's a few of the evolutions the linecook smut went through.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
the paragraphs i make is something i do to separate the smut into mini-scenes and tell myself i'll write this small part today. it makes it a much more manageable endeavor and a lot more motivating. it tends to happen when i am in the homestretch and know i am almost done and have a much clearer view of what the fic would look like and how long each part is.
with fics that have been hauting my brain for a long time —cough pfms cough— you can imagine that the series is very precisely planned. especially when i start writing a specific part. i'm kinda always thinking about my own aus bc i have a Rich mind palace so i am always noting down ideas. i have been Burned too many times with a fickle memory to not do it. if i think of the dialogue of a scene or even the entire prose of it, i write it down too, though i do often get convinced by my falling asleep brain that i'll 'remember tomorrow' and i, indeed, do not.
hope this was interesting to more than me lmao! thanks for the question again my sweet friend
73. What do you tend to get complimented on the most about your writing?
(Eeep… I’m so sorry if this is long and incredibly annoying. We could move it to chat if you don’t wanna answer. Sorry sorry sorry in advance.)
So sorry for answering so late! I literally just got the time to just sit down ahah. And do not apologize! I very much loved answering each one of these questions <33
1. Do you daydream a lot before you write, or go for it as soon as the ideas strike?
If it's just concept for like a little blurb, then I write it as soon as the idea strikes. But if it's a BIG fic concept, then I daydream about it a LOT!
3. Do you share your fic ideas, or do you keep them to yourself?
I keep them to myself!
4. How do you choose which fics to write?
I don't quite understand this one... I write every fic I ever think of? But if there's a fic that's like putting me in a slump again and again, then I'm gonna half-ass it and publish it, or just put in a folder that I made for fics like that :)
10. Do you work on multiple wips or stick to one fic at a time?
I start 2-3 at a time, so that I can switch every once in a while, and look at the main one with fresh eyes!
11. Do you write scenes in order, or do you jump around?
In order! If I jump around, I'm gonna fuck up everything hahah
12. Do you outline your fics? If yes, how detailed are your outlines? How far do you stray from them?
I don't, actually. I mean, I don't start a fic with an outline, but I do make one when I've got like a good amount of material with me. Because I've found that outlining is actually the fastest way I kill my ideas and the ecstatic flow of writing and it kind of takes away the fun and makes writing feel, somehow, monotone? So yeah!
13. Do you listen to music while you write? If yes, what have you been listening to recently?
I do, it's mostly instrumental. But I write the best when I'm writing without any music, or with some ambience!
18. Do you enjoy research? Which fic of yours required the most research?
Oh I love researching! Makes me learn and explore a lot, and it's fun! I can't disclose which fic required the most of it though ;)
21. Do you prefer writing chaptered fics or one-shots?
Usually one-shots but I love a good chaptered format when I know the au deserves it.
22. Do you title your fics before, during, or after the writing process? How do you come up with titles?
I usually do it before or after, never during! I either choose it based on the theme of the fic, or just some random word of the fic -- depending on how major the fic is.
23. Is writing the beginning, middle, or end of the story easiest? Hardest?
Writing the beginning is the easiest, sometimes the end even. But writing the middle is the hardest; go argue with a wall
27. What area of writing do you feel strongest in?
Either when I'm writing some normal fluff, or when I'm writing a goodbye scene or like a scene where the characters are pained and vulnerable.
28. What area of writing do you want to improve in?
Definitely the type of angst that normal relationships have, you know? Like I don't shit about how mature couples fight and what they fight about, not do I know how they even sit down and have a conversation about it... so I can't write it either.
29. What's something about your writing that you're proud of?
Oh, I don't know! You'll have to ask someone else
30. How much do you edit your fics? Do you edit as you write or wait until you finish the first draft?
Mostly, I edit as I write, which I'm not very fond of. But sometimes, when I just want to crumple up my brain like a piece of paper and throw it away, I just wait until I finish the first draft.
51. Does what you like to write differ from what you like to read?
Very much so! I prefer to read literary/general fiction, historical fiction, fantasy, sci-fi, dystopian and sometimes, classics. But you haven't yet seen me write any of that. And, I like my romance as a subplot... which also, you haven't yet seen from me!
55. Have you noticed any patterns in your fics? Words/expressions that appear a lot, themes, common settings, etc?
Hmm... they are mostly happy-ended or they just end up conversing about it (In the posts I've published!) I do use a lot of 'chuckled'!
56. Are there any fics that you would change or rewrite if given the chance?
I'm actually planning on re-writing my old 'No-Verse' fics! (Am I in the middle of one? Maybe)
57. How conscious are you about including symbolism or foreshadowing in your fics?
VERY. Hopefully you'll see one day <3
68. Are there any fics that influenced you to write the way you do?
Yes! I wouldn't necessarily say fics, but the writers definitely did!
69. What are your favorite fics at the moment?
I haven't been reading a lot of ff lately, but these are some I managed to consume and left no crumbs :-
Prince!Harry x Princess!Y/n | Harry is a prince, Y/N is a princess, and Harry is insufferable. - @novelistrry
A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes | Every Rose has its Thorns | Petals and Prompts | Harry’s a prince looking for his princess… but perhaps she isn’t inside the ball. Includes: flowers and gossip and promises and true love’s kiss. - @jarofstyles
71. Do you spend more time reading or writing?
Reading definitely but there are months when I write more!
72. What's your favorite writing compliment you've gotten?
A bestie told me that I'm her role-model :)))
73. What do you tend to get complimented on the most about your writing?
The fluff ahah!
for the fic writer asks!!
5, 9, 13, 15, 29?
hi hi aayo!!
[questions were here]
5. So, a while back, I was spitballing with my friends about Pokemon Black/White & the sequel, because I love those games, those are my childhood Pokemon games, and the story is so close to brilliant I can taste it. It would just need a little touching up, I swear, adjust a motivation here, add some more scenes there... But see the thing is, doing that would take. A While. and I just don't think I have the patience to do a full rewrite of a Pokemon game from 2010 so it'll probably remain an idea.
9. Yes! I do! I try to do a few hundred words a day, every day. Depending on how bad my depression is, I can be pretty consistent about it and get a lot done. And I did manage to do a little today for that nsfw lucifer/raphael fic I'm working on! Let's see here. Ahem. "Waiting, a front of perfect obedience betrayed by how hard he’s clenching his hands together behind his back to keep from touching himself." :) I am. doing things. to luci.
13. It depends on the fic. Some of them, I want to say Last Call and could have been anyone, anyone are good examples, start writing themselves in my head with absolutely no warning, and I have to jump to the nearest thing to jot down the sentences before they disappear forever. Others, like Honey, Don't Feed It, have literally been turned over in my brain for more than a year, twisted and changed until I've gotten a fic I actually like out of it.
15. Sometimes it's a song title, sometimes it's a line from the fic, sometimes it's 'it is 4am when im posting it and ive already typed up the fucking tags and the summary and i am so so tired whats the closest noun i can think of' and then i slap it on there and call it a day.
29. asjklajdksld my first thought was 'oh you know what fine i'll post what i had of that samifer fic before it gets deleted but uh It Is Literally Entirely Porn. so lets. lets go with something a little more PG, yeah? Not exactly polite of me to throw smut at you without asking.
So instead, have this bit from the original draft of my next Sarah/Lucifer/Nick fic that got cut because I switched the pov character from Sarah to Nick for. Reasons.
Sarah has had a lot more time to paint in the last few months. Enough that muscle memory she thought lost has slowly reappeared, making her hand steadier. Her art hasn’t become more neat as a result, but it has grown purpose in its mess. Her mother always wished she’d take after her grandmother and paint lush green forests and pretty meadows, but Sarah’s brushes led her down a different path. Intricate strokes litter the paper, testing to see how close she can bring the painting to the being curled around her spine before it devolves into a jumbled mess. Lucifer is not an easy muse. Sarah hasn’t managed to paint a piece that does her justice yet.
This one is barely recognizable as anything, more abstract than Sarah’s committed to in a long time. A lot of her paintings of Lucifer start somewhere she understands, with Nick’s face or her own, fragmented to better show the angel that lives inside them, openings in the skin like bloodless wounds through which eyes and feathers and teeth peek through. Someone else might find them terrifying. Nick thinks her paintings of Lucifer are beautiful. Lucifer, of course, is flattered and amused. She watches Sarah paint, enthralled the same way Nick mentioned her being the day he built Teddy’s crib. She hasn’t asked for a turn at the brushes yet, but Sarah hopes she does one day, if only so they can see what she’s capable of creating.
Sarah stretches. There’s no satisfying pop to her spine as she uncurls from her art, but in exchange, there’s also no lingering soreness from staying in one position for too long. Lucifer’s grace pulses, buried somewhere deep, utterly content. Sarah shuts her eyes as though she could listen to her.
Instead, Sarah hears a cry from the other room. She lets her head tilt towards the clock on the wall. It’s been a while since she put Teddy down for a nap. Lucifer is on alert the moment the sound hits Sarah’s ears. She’s still not used to the simple fact that sometimes, babies cry, and it doesn’t mean the world is about to end. Impossible to fathom wings flex under Sarah’s skin. Sarah suppresses a chuckle into a small smile and sets her paintbrush down. It rolls to join its brethren of various sizes, the only commonality between them all the teethmarks at the tip where Sarah chewed when she got frustrated or distracted. Lucifer’s wings flap, a wave of power rolling through Sarah’s body that’s asking one question, whether they can fly to the nursery rather than take the minute long walk there. Sarah lets her consent echo back through Lucifer, bracing herself.
Flight is a cacophony. Flight is like learning what it is to be a photon and forgetting again as her body hits the ground, human toes curling against the fuzz of the nursery carpet. Lucifer recovers like they’ve taken a brisk walk up the stairs. Sarah needs a minute more, as though she’s been thrown under the waves at the beach and needs to figure out which direction is up in order to stand. In his crib, Teddy turns his head to look at them, brown eyes seeking his mother, and when he knows she’s there to hear him, he scrunches up his face and starts crying again.
It’s Lucifer that takes them the first few steps to the crib, but Sarah who reaches down and picks Teddy up.
“Hey, hey, fussy,” she says softly to him, “shh, we’re here now.” Teddy cries out one more time, like he’s making sure she’s not going to put him down and leave once he’s quiet. Sarah rocks him.
“We’re here,” comes another voice from her mouth, still hesitant but less than it has been in a few months. Lucifer raises Sarah’s hand to pet a line down Teddy’s forehead. There’s no more than the ambient hum of her grace beneath Sarah’s skin, but between being held by his mother and watched over by his guardian devil, (Sarah’s mouth curls at the thought, and she can’t tell if it’s her or Lucifer reacting.) he quiets. He keeps frowning, scrunched up eyes and a wrinkled forehead. “Hello, Theodore,” Lucifer says, and it’s at Sarah’s prodding that she finally says, “Teddy.”
He’s a baby, Sarah teases, no need to be so formal.
Names mean something, comes the quick counter.
And this one means you love him. Lucifer hums, finger still drifting in absent circles over Teddy’s face. Teddy latches onto it when it’s near his mouth, and Lucifer freezes. Sarah laughs, and with control of her body falling back to her, it comes out without a care in the world. Teddy makes a frustrated noise when she pulls her finger away.
“That’s better than you needing a diaper change,” Sarah tells him. Teddy babbles at her, sounds that are beginning to have more distinct shapes but mean nothing at all. She’s going to have to put him back down to undo her button-up, or would have to, only Lucifer proves for the hundredth time how much easier parenting is with divine power backing them up. Sarah shifts Teddy around in her arms, enduring the tiny beat of an impatient hand against her chest, until she has him comfortably settled to feed.
He seems so small in her arms. He’s growing fast and will continue to for years and years, a prospect both terrifying and exciting.
It’s a short enough walk to her and Nick’s bedroom from the nursery, and she’s careful not to jostle Teddy while he nurses. There, she can settle down comfortably against the pillows, the blankets tucking themselves up around her legs despite her not reaching for them. It doesn’t do much against the ever-present chill, but Sarah doesn’t want that to go away. Besides, they bundle Teddy up warmly enough.
She does wonder sometimes what it’ll be like as he gets older. If his first words will be ‘dada’ or ‘mama’ or something else entirely, a string of syllables that seem like gibberish to her and Nick but mimic the language that Lucifer sometimes speaks to him off-handedly, the one that makes Sarah’s ears feel like they might pop from pressure if she listens for too long, the one that Teddy reacts to with kicking feet and responsive babbling. If one day Sarah will get teachers telling her about Teddy’s imaginary angelic friend who raised him, both those impressed that he could come up with something so elaborate and those worried that the angel in question is Lucifer herself. Maybe the funniest thing Sarah can imagine is if Nick ever takes little Teddy to church and what kind of menace they might unleash with a child who loves the devil like a mother. That, if it ever happens, is a long ways off, and until then, Lucifer is still the secret held between the three of them.
“You think he’ll still like me,” Lucifer says, dipping her hand into the stream of Sarah’s thoughts, welcomed but nibbled at by the fish that think she really should have asked permission first. Maybe a little hypocritical when Sarah has already let her in, “when he grows up.”
There is, always, this expectation of rejection that lingers in Lucifer’s words. A surprise when she finds connection instead that breaks Sarah’s heart.
“You look after him. You sing to him. You feed him.” Sarah looks down at Teddy, who takes his fill and rests his tiny fist against her skin. This caretaking is a communal effort, after all. “Of course he’ll love you.”
