tossing a thought into the air bc every time i watch this scene i remember:
in the gun scene, Sara says that August had told her he wanted to come clean. it’s not the only time she says this, but it’s the one i always think about it at. but... did August ever actually say that? because it always just sounded like Sara was telling him he should, and she convinced herself that he agreed when he never actually said it.
like... she brings it up when he tells her about the summons to the palace and then it comes back up a few more times but every time it does i swear it’s Sara saying it. she’s putting words in his mouth that he never said.
she tells him about Simon going to the police because she believes he wants to confess anyway, and now there’s a time constraint. she wants him to get the redemption that comes from turning himself in, to make him more human and more likeable? i guess? so that she can better justify loving him.
but again, i’m pretty sure she is the only one who actually says that he wants to confess.

im sure people mean well by it and some people think its nice to hear but everytime i see a person telling someone they "pass so well" it makes the hair on my neck bristle. Its a thing where it feels like they're saying "i can tell you are trans and i am saying congrats to you for doing a good job at looking like _____ but in my mind you aren't _____ you're trans ______". Like the idea of passing to me feels specifically like you are telling this person they are wearing a costume well but you are separating them from being that gender. It seems so othering to me. I see a trans woman and shes just a woman there is no pass or fail shes just what she looks like and what shes wearing. Same goes for trans men, non-binary people. It doesn't matter if someone is completely dolled up in a fancy outfit, hours of makeup done, or just woke up tired and in sweats they still just look like the gender that they are because they are that gender and there isnt a bar to cross or a look to achieve. I dont know i could very well be wrong and people enjoy it and think its genuinely complimentary. I'm agender personally so its impossible for me to "pass" as anything.

Yall might have to bare with me on this one I'm not great at articulating my thoughts and although I'm neurodivergent I really don't have the proper terms to explain myself here
But like
Okay so it's very obvious that Eli is not neurotypical. I don't want to really get into specific diagnoses because I very much do not want to fall into the serial killer = mental disorder trope. It's a shitty trope and very harmful when handled poorly, especially with Cluster B personalities. Under no circumstances am I saying that Eli's mental condition is the cause of him being a serial killer. I am in fact trying to say the opposite.
TW for discussion of abuse and ableism
Basically, the crux of my argument lies with Eli's flashbacks in Vengeful, specifically when it comes to his father.
Eli mentions that the abuse started when he was around 9 years old because his father saw "the devil" in his eyes.
Eli's age at the time is very important. 9 years old. A literal child. Eli has done nothing wrong at this point aside from exist, and yet his father sees something wrong with him. It's possible that it was intended for Eli to have truly had some "evil" inside of him from the beginning, but it is far far more likely that Eli's father saw some kind of behavior out of the norm (we see that Eli was not a very expressive child. He had to learn all of those behaviors later on) and concluded that it hinted at some "hidden evil". We see those ideas reflected in our own society all the time, with apathy or lack of expression in face or vocal tone can be misconstrued or depicted as evil or heartless.
Eli was never evil or a bad kid. He was 9 years old. There was no devil in his eyes, he simply expressed himself in a way that was considered abnormal.
There's more I could say on this but I've run out of brain power. If anyone has any insight or ways they relate to Eli that they're comfortable talking about or even criticisms, I'm very open to discussion.

I think we as a fandom are collectively sleeping on Carolina being raised with Jewish holidays. dude can you imagine her being reintroduced to them once she’s with the reds and blues maybe cus they picked them up as a found-family sort of tradition because of church and they continue them when he’s gone. her getting to relive the sweet nostalgic parts of her childhood with her new family. can you imagine her coming in and seeing all the decorations and food she hasn’t seen in years (this is ofc assuming they didn’t really do holidays on the MOI) screaming and crying do you see it do you see my vision

I just realized something about Nile’s eye makeup.
His bey is obviously based on Horus, the Egyptian god. And everything about Nile, legit down to the fact he has the same name as the major river in Egypt, seems to be a reference to his heritage. However his makeup doesn’t really look like Horus’s symbol, the eye of Horus. It doesn’t look like the eye of Ra either in my opinion, it seems both stylized and different from both famous symbols.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Instead, they are deliberately asymmetrical, as if they represent different things. These are supposed to show something. The kid version of me in my head who was obsessed with mythologies told me I was forgetting something that I definitely should know. So I dusted off my old books and did a bit of digging. And...
The deity Horus is a sky deity. And in early texts, his eyes were described as the sun and moon, before they were split up between Horus and Ra later on. More specifically, his right eye was the sun and his left was the moon.
The makeup under Nile’s right eye predominantly features a triangle, like a sun ray. And the makeup under his left features what looks to be a geometric crescent, like the moon.
Tumblr media
...His makeup is a nod to the early translations of Horus’s eyes.

Hi!! Just wanted to say I love your art so much!
Especially what interested me was the land of the lustrous fanart involving the wires. Is it okay if I know how you achieved that retro old computer effect with your art?
Thank you so much!! I appreciate that 😭💖
And ofc!! ^_^ I use procreate but all of these settings are in other software or easy to replicate
These steps are in no particular order (except the curve tool), I kinda just go with whatever my brain decides to use first
So here is my unedited piece when I finished the drawing itself, I used a really small canvas size here but this will all work for any size:
Tumblr media
Next I used the "noise" filter, I more or less use the settings in the screenshot but I play around with it, too
Tumblr media
The use of the "multi" here is important especially, it gives the noise just a little bit of color that makes a huge difference
Next is "Chromatic Aberration"
Tumblr media Tumblr media
chromatic aberration creates an outline of color around your artwork, it replicates a color distortion cameras can have when the lens isn't focused (according to google). I use the settings in the screenshot but I only move it just a littleee bit, overdoing it here can really overpower the picture so I recommend being cautious!
(Optional) Sharpen
Tumblr media
Sharpen adds this jpeg effect that I really like, I say it's optional because sometimes it can be a little overpowering like chromatic aberration can be or just not needed at all (IMO🥸👆) I use this one when I'm going for like, a super compressed jpeg look (better example⬇️)
Tumblr media
And finally, the adjustment curve
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'm paraphrasing what I read on reddit about this, but moving the color adjustment curve on "gamma" and bending it down toward the bottom left just a bit moves the colors closer to what old camera colors looked like. All of the other steps can be done in any order, but I recommend doing this one last.
That being said, go about this how you would want! I hope this helped :-)

Why is everyone so hung up on NoA's use of the word "inkling????" I've seen so many posts lately that are like "it doesn't make sense that the squid people are called inklings since octolings use ink too so it should be a general term and the squid people should be called squidlings!!!" and like. Yeah. That's true I guess. I dunno, I never really particularly cared about it that much, it's kind of a nitpick. And like—something about "squidling" as a word feels super weird and awkward to me and I don't entirely know why? I think it has something to do with the consonants? Or maybe it's my imagination, who knows. Either way I don't entirely get why people have been getting so hung up on it lately.

Bora Chung’s short story, The Head, from Cursed Bunny
- translated by Anton Hur
synopsis : a head constructed out of a woman’s feces rises out of her toilet bowl and begins to call her mother. disturbed and disgusted, a series of events lead the woman to quit her job and enter a loveless marriage and give birth to a daughter. however, she is constantly plagued by the head and so attempts to get rid of it. on after the second failed attempt to kill it, the head eventually stops appearing. the woman grows old, cooking and cleaning for her husband and daughter. as her daughter grows, the woman begins to recognise her ageing body. then one night out of the blue, the head rises out of the toilet as the woman’s younger self and demands the woman to give her her clothes. the head (now her younger self) enacts revenge on the woman for her mistreatment and tips her into the toilet.
-------
when I first read The Head I was struck by how surreal it was. it was nothing like I've ever read before- it was bonkers- yet bonkers isn’t quite the word for it. As crazy as a head made of feces calling you “Mother.” got, the woman’s suppressed dissatisfaction with her life, her relationship with her daughter and husband, her disquietude and disgust of the head all seemed rather rational.
as I was reading through the short story, I was desperately trying to work out what exactly were ‘the bigger meaning’ behind the story. at first it seemed to me to not have a large cohesive ‘bigger meaning’ but rather smaller fragments of it, perhaps its aim was to give a fragmented representation of society- for instance, a pressure to marry, growing old and living with regrets.
arguably, The Head could be interpreted as a showcase of class divide; the head representing the marginalised members of society, and the woman representing the upper class, ending with a social upheaval as the woman is flushed down the toilet, serving as a kind of warning of the transience of power and social capital. in many ways The Head reminded me of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, which could also be interpreted as a novel in support of the French Revolution, repeatedly showcasing the idea of ‘if you treat people well, they will behave well, if you treat them badly, they will undoubtedly rebel’. This idea could also be seen in The Head, when the woman demands gratitude from the head at the end of the story, the head responds with ‘Gratitude. What gratitude should I have for you? [...] What have you given me besides your feces and trash?’. the woman's mistreatment and rejection of her responsibility towards the head accumulated the head’s resentment and lead to her demise.
however, I am more so convinced by the reading that The Head was an exploration of the oppression of women and its effects. I am not sure if I am reaching but in some ways I felt that the head was likened to an aborted fetus. It is an unwanted child and the woman did not purposely create it or want it either and if you will, it’s down the toilet. Either way, never mind wether the head is a symbol for an aborted fetus, it is ultimately an unwanted child, a child born out of wedlock which is already a cause of social exclusion be it aborted or not. The head’s identity as a child born out of wedlock- or even as child born out of feces- embodies the unconventional, shunned route leading away from the rigid obligations of marriage, childbirth and motherhood. the woman’s disgust of the head could be reflective of society’s disgust of the unconventional, leading her to quit her job and enter the average prescribed road which she finds no joy in. deep into her middle age, the woman ‘gazed upon the meaningless progression of scenes’ on TV, attempting to distract herself from ‘am odd little space between her heart.’ Her passive action of ‘gazed’ and watching TV in itself suggests a lack of involvement and vigour in her own life, and perhaps a sense of yearning for something more in the form of story-telling to fill the ‘odd little space’.
at the end of the story where the head returns with it’s body complete, it is described luxuriously with all the beauty of youth and the narrative voice begins to refer to it as ‘her young self’. this binds the woman and the head together as one, suggesting the head embodies the woman’s full potential that she had at her youth and before she married and entered her empty, emotionless life. her young self takes over and removes the old self of its meaningless life, and continues as the woman. The young self’s unconventional birth suggests a trajectory where the young self takes an new path as unconventional as her birth. Here, the use of doppelgängers could suggest that the head/the young self is the woman’s unfulfilled potential and desires that had been limited by her and therefore society’s disgust of the head/the young self.
in recent years, anti-feminism has drawn the support of many young men in S.Korea who believe that they have suffered the worst of gender discrimination. an article published by the guardian, reported that this was possibly due to men feeling threatened by women’s advancement in the workplace, and especially because all Korean men must serve mandatory military service before the age of 30, which can hinder their careers. this same service is not expected of women, which, sparks debate which I won’t be discussing here. roughly speaking, this creates a situation where sentiments towards advances in women’s rights are resented and traditional roles for women are pushed. on top to this, S.Korea’s birth rate is decline. undoubtedly there must be a growing pressure on Korean women to fulfil their supposed ‘duties’ of childbirth. as many of us know, having children is challenging, many married women upon having children often retreat from work, and assume housewifely identities which can result in a reliance on their husbands.
this route is seen here, in The Head. the woman leaves her job due to her disgust of the head and enters a loveless marriage, which she and her husband spend in ‘emotional detachment’ and does not seem to view any aspect of it as fulfilling. and despite having a ‘real’ daughter of her own the woman is still the more preoccupied with the head (and therefore what it represents). once the head disappears, she becomes all the more aware of the meaninglessness of her life as a housewife and her age.
Chung seems to be critiquing this unfulfilling conventional path that seems to be ever more expected of women, exploring the emotional effects of this pressure through the characters of the woman and the head.

Listen, love (a Zukka poem)
Listen, love, I have a few things to ask:
I have been thinking about our skins.
How
Bright the dark of your knee is to mine,
And how the red of my cheek is too harsh to yours, darling
Could you close your eyes, love, for me ?
Could you ignore the fire tainting my skin ?
Could you see the depth of me and still find me worthy of adoration ?
Could you cradle my face and kiss it, sweetheart, everywhere you can reach ?
It would sooth the aches, love, I think.
I could give you my everything, mon amour
I could let myself burn at your fingertips, darling
I could let the wave of your words drown me, 亲爱的
I could trust your hands around my neck, aakuluk.
Our knuckles meet, for a second or two-
I forget about the fire in me,
And let the sight of you so close fill me up.
Could you take my hands in yours, darling ?
Could you ?
