UTB is everything to me and one of the only things I look forward to right now!

I had a question, but it’s fine if you don’t answer it. In the latest chapter, Gary is very distressed when he persuades Polly to be calm. Is this because he’s had to it before to someone else he loves a whole, whole, whole, whole lot, or am I reading too much into this?

I feel like he’s done it to Efnisien before, and didn’t appear to have the same reaction, but their relationship has had a tremendous amount of growth, so it may have been indicative of where they were in their relationship.

please disregard this if I’m just being a dumb butt, or even if I’m not actively being a dumb butt, but you don’t want to or have the time.

Thank you for sharing one of the most amazing gifts! In definitely going to be going through a mourning period and grieve when it’s over. I have comfort in knowing it won’t be the end of the Rainbow universe, but it’s going to be difficult!

This is answered somewhat in the story already:

‘Polly,’ he hissed, pushing at her again. She only pushed her head back into Gary’s arm, and Gary left her there to enjoy the impromptu adventure of her owner sitting on the floor with her. He could use alpha persuasion in his pheromones or voice to get her to go away. But he couldn’t bear to do it to an old lady dog like her, who just wanted to be around people and get some love. He patted her again, his other hand still resting flat on Efnisien’s torso. He hoped the touch would have the same influence on Efnisien now as it seemed to have before.

Gary has pretty strong feelings against using persuasion on animals that don't understand what's happening to them, or why something like that is happening to them.

He could have used it all along to get Polly to do what he wanted, but has always avoided it because he believes it's wrong. Unlike people who understand what is being done to them, he has no idea if it will create any lasting effects in Polly, and believes she's too old to really go through the stress of it.

In the moment he used the alpha persuasion to force Polly to calm for her own safety, he was breaking his own heart, but he also didn't know if she'd survive it. That being said, it was the first one that affected him most. To him, she is a lovely sweet old lady who he wouldn't want to put through any stress at all. He feeds her extra treats, spoils her, lets everyone else spoil her, has never trained her, and just wants her to be comfortable.

To have to force her to do anything at all, especially when their lives are in danger, was especially difficult for him. As far as he's concerned, it's very separate to using persuasion of any kind on people.

Basically he has a really big heart, beneath his rather stern demeanour, and before he met Efnisien, he was actually closest to Polly.
