How do you think Sukka, Zutara, and Taang would go about giving their kids ‘the talk?’ Do they preplan what to say or just wing it?
And as a bonus, how would each ship handle their older (early teenage?) kids, who already know what’s going on, walking in on them? (Lol I wrote a Sukka fic a few months ago where that happens so I thought it’d be fun to get someone else’s take on how that would go down.)
Okay Boomer (I saw an opportunity and I took it, and it was silly and I regret it I'm sorry lmao it won't happen again), thank you for the ask! Oh boy, the age-old armadillo birds and the beetle bees discussion. Good lord I need to stop I'm sorry it's Friday LOL. Let's talk!
Sukka: Sokka would probably go about the topic humorously to lighten up the awkwardness. Maybe put on his Wang Fire beard? He'd probably try and use metaphors, and then begin to ramble because he really doesn't want to be talking about his with his kids, especially his baby girl, and by the time he starts rambling on about the 100 year war, Suki puts a loving hand on his shoulder and says, "I'll take it from here, darling." LOL. But, I do think they would try and be sincere with their answers. Their son would probably go to Sokka for questions, and their daughter Suki. And if they were caught in the act? Well... Let's just say I feel like we'd see another TSR surprised looks from out esteemed couple lmao! They'd hope and pray no one saw anything but... it happens. Sometimes you just get caught with your pants down, ya know? I'd guess they'd try and play it cool, fail a little bit (a lot a bit), and they'd be walking on eggshells around the house for a while haha!
Zutara: Idk why, but I just picture mortified looks from everyone involved. The parents don't wanna be there, the kids don't wanna be there... I just see this as being the time where the whole family becomes awkward turtleducks and there's just no way around it. Zuko and Katara probably try to prepare for the conversation as much as possible, maybe even visual aids?? (the horror on the kids faces). But, like Sukka, there probably is a moment where all awkwardness aside, there's a breakthrough and they have a sincere conversation. And if anything, the girls would probably just go straight to Katara for a one-on-one conversation, and that makes things way easier. Sure, she can be awkward too, but it's their Mama, they trust her and respect her and they know they can go to her with these types of questions. With Iroh II? He just kind of goes about his life and Zuko avoids the conversation as long as possible... The kid is practically an adult by the time Zuko gets the courage to talk, and really, Iroh already knows things at this point LOL. And for the walking in... oh spirits above everyone wishes they could unsee what (or who lmao) went down. If either of the girls saw that, they would most certainly give their parents the silent treatment. No one could look each other in the eye either!
Taang: Aang tries to be all "it's a part of nature! It's beautiful" and Toph is like "enough metaphors, this is what you do and where you put it" LOL. They both seem rather impromptu with their ways, Aang probably would fumble his words more than Toph. And for the kids, I think they would mostly turn to Aang for questions and stuff. Toph would definitely give them blunt answers and won't shy away from the conversation, but it's easier to talk to Baba about this stuff... Toph probably is the first person to tell the kids where babies come from, though. Honestly, she probably told Lin when she was pregnant with Kenji and the girl was just... shooketh. Aang balked when he heard what Mama told Linny and gave Toph a stern lecture about oversharing... But out of the three, I think they're probably the chillest couple and not as embarrassed about talking about it than the others. It's probably not the smoothest conversation, but Toph always gives straight answers and Aang is really relatable, so in this situation, it's kind of useful. And as far as walking in on them... I think Toph would sometimes be able to tell when they're about to be walked in on LOL. But if she can't, I think there would be a lot of shouting between Toph and her kid telling him/her to get out lol. Aang would definitely be mortified and run after the child to console him/her and Toph would complain about her kid being a cockblock. The kids would whine and call them gross and the house would be a bit of a circus (well, more of one at least). Aang will probably be guilty and embarrassed, and Toph will say she's not, but Aang can see just a hint of blush creeping over her face...
Those are my thoughts on the matter, but would love to hear your takes! Thanks for the great question, and have a nice day!
Send me questions, asks, or headcanons about Taang, Zutara, or Sukka!

Obstacles
~ part of the fire lilies series ~
requests: Could you write a Fire Lilies blurb where Zuko struggles with how to approach being around Princess Reader when she avoids him and/or gives him the silent treatment? // Hi- I was wondering if you could write a fire lillies blurb where, when the gaang first starts interacts with zuko, they are more protective of the reader. Simply because they know the history between the two.
a/n: the format of this is a little different than how I normally write but I think it works :)
Tumblr media
Though Zuko had finally become a part of Team Avatar, he still found himself to be the odd one out of the group. From Katara’s cold glare to Sokka’s reluctance of being left alone with the prince, Zuko struggled to find his place amongst the group. It was odd and new and strange, but at least it was a start in the right direction, and his first step included mending things with the Princess. He had gotten her to fall in love with him once, so it couldn’t be that hard to do it again, right?
In truth, it was very hard. Zuko faced many obstacles and many set backs, and it would probably be some time before she even so much as looked at him, let alone forgave him...
~~~
Katara
Zuko watched from afar as the Princess handled her chores for the day, sitting peacefully by the fountain as she washed the clothes. Her movements were delicate but precise, the water flowing smoothly through the dirt and the grime collected on Toph’s green robes, and a faint smile graced her features as she hummed softly through the work. She was at peace and completely relaxed, more relaxed than Zuko had ever seen y/n in years. Even in Ba Sing Se there had always been a nervous edge to her, an edge she did her best to hide from Zuko, and she had almost been completely rid of it until the caves. He cringed at the thought, guilt overcoming him at the fact that she seemed so much better off without him.
“What are you doing?” Katara scowls accusingly, startling the Prince from his silent watch over y/n.
“I-“
“Y/N’s been really happy ever since she left you, and you’re crazy if you think I’m going to let you ruin that for her,” the water bender scolds harshly.
“I just want to apologize to her,” Zuko replies calmly, but Katara isn’t having it.
“A simple apology is never going to fix all the ways you’ve hurt her. Y/n deserves better, and if I ever see you make her upset or uncomfortable I won’t hesitate to step in.”
Zuko says nothing as Katara stalks away, he knows better than to get in her way when she’s angry, and when her retreating form finally disappears he looks back at the fountain.
The clothes have been washed, and the Princess is gone.
~~~
Sokka
The smell of stew was heavenly to Zuko’s rumbling tummy, and he was eager to join everyone by the fireside. Bowls had been served, seats had been chosen, and an empty spot beside the Princess was his for the taking.
“Excuse me, buddy,” Sokka chirps, patting Zuko heartily on the back before quickly sitting himself beside y/n. She smiles softly at the water tribe boy and offers him her leftovers to which he happily accepts.
Zuko deflates, choosing to sit next to Aang and enjoy his stew of failure. This isn’t the first time this has happened, and it probably won’t be the last. He knew Sokka was just protecting her, and he couldn’t be mad at him for that. Sokka had probably done more for y/n in her time with him than Zuko had ever done, who was he to blame his protectiveness?
Y/n offers to take the empty dishes to wash, and as Zuko attempts to follow after her his path is quickly blocked by Sokka.
“Listen, I know you’re trying to make things right, and while I respect that, y/n’s asked me to keep you away from her,” he explains as gently as he can. “It’s nothing personal, but I care about her and I want to make sure she feels comfortable.”
“Oh... I understand,” Zuko utters quietly. “Will you at least tell her that I love her?”
“...I’ll do my best,” Sokka replies solemnly, watching with a pang of guilt as Zuko retreats to his room for the night.
~~~
Aang
“What am I supposed to do?” Zuko groans whilst tugging at his hair.
“You know I’m a firm believer in peace, and I do think that neither of you will be happy until your issues are resolved,” Aang comments wisely. “But I also think you should never force anything. Y/n will come around in her own time when she’s ready.”
“But that could take forever!” He protests. “I’ve already been away from her long enough, and being near her but not being able to speak to her is torture.”
Both boys turn their gazes towards y/n in the distance where she carefully brush Appa’s hair and talk to him about his day. The sight is very Princess like, which is fitting since she is a Princess after all, but the sweetness of it all makes Zuko’s heart ache with longing.
“What you did wasn’t right,” Aang sighs. “And she’s still healing. But, if she truly couldn’t stand you then she wouldn’t have given her blessing to let you stay.”
“She only let me stay so I could train you,” Zuko argues.
“Okay, that’s true. But she also washes your clothes, serves you dinner, and just the other day I saw her mending a hole in your boot. She won’t talk to you, but she does still care.”
“She’s always had such a big heart,” he murmurs dejectedly. “Back when I was still hunting you y/n always went out of her way to take care of me even if I didn’t want it. I was a fool to take her for granted.”
“I really do think you guys will work it out. Just don’t force anything, and you’ll be fine,” Aang comforts, and the two continue to watch the Princess as she tends to Appa.
~~~
Toph
With a bouquet of wild flowers in hand and his hair combed in that same horrid style his Uncle had given him back in Ba Sing Se, Zuko headed to her room in hopes of finally talking to the Princess. He knew how much y/n loved flowers, and he also knew how much she loved that ridiculously dorky hairstyle, so he hoped that the two combined together would at least earn him a smile in return.
But when he arrived to her part of the temple he found that her door was barricaded with a smooth slab of rock, and sitting a few feet away from said rock was Toph. The little girl sat leaning against the wall, legs crossed over each other and hands folded behind her head.
“Sorry, sparky, boss’s orders,” she explains with a small shrug, and Zuko deflates. “Personally I think she just needs to man up and face you, but until then I’ve been put under strict orders not to let you in.”
“She really hates me, doesn’t she?” Zuko sighs, joining Toph against the wall. The flowers in his hand are beginning to droop from the lack of water, much like his demeanor from his lack of y/n.
“No, but she’s very angry,” Toph corrects. “Really sad, too. Sokka’s already been in there three times tonight.”
“Are they...?”
“Together? He wishes,” the girl scoffs. “His heartbeat picks up a beat or two sometimes when he’s with her, but he’d never make a move on her. Not when she’s so upset and he’s the only one she can talk to.”
“Yeah, well maybe they should be together,” Zuko grumbles, the flower stems charring in his hands from the sudden heat that emits from his palms. “They’re both water tribe and he obviously takes care of her better than I ever could.”
“That’s true,” Toph nods much to Zuko’s dismay. “But she doesn’t love Sokka. She loves you.”
“Loved,” Zuko corrects only for Toph to roll her eyes.
“You dunderhead,” she mutters before punching him in the shoulder. “I should just knock your heads together and make you kiss and make up right now.”
“Can you do that?” Zuko asks hopefully only to receive another punch from Toph.
“You sure do have a lot to learn, sparky.”
~~~
The Princess
The morning is quiet and calm as you rise with the sun, heading out to collect the dew on the plants of the temple so that you may use it as water for your group. Other than Momo, who sits comfortably on your shoulders, everyone is asleep, giving you some time to decompress and enjoy the solitude of the rising sun.
“Anything I can help with?”
Or so you thought. Of course Zuko would approach you now when there was no one to keep him away from you. You say nothing in response, refusing to even look at him as you set down your bucket and begin to remove the dew from the leaves.
“Y/n, please talk to me,” he begs. “Let me make it better.”
Zuko is met with silence and an eye roll. Momo chitters curiously at the Princess, receiving a head scratch in return which is more than Zuko can say.
“I never stopped thinking of you,” he says. “And I wish I could take back everything I’ve done to hurt you.”
“I don’t want your apologies,” you utter quietly. “I want you to go away.”
Hearing your voice after being met with silence for so long brings the boy to tears, and with a hesitant demeanor Zuko reaches out for you. However, at the sight of the water glowing your palms the Prince takes a step back. You’re not afraid to turn your bending on him, not anymore, and it isn’t until now that he realizes he really has hurt you, more than he could ever have imagined.
“Y/n...”
“Go. Don’t make me ask again.”
With a defeated sigh Zuko turns away and leaves the Princess to her own devices. She goes back to tending to the dew, and the Prince goes back to his room to wallow in his shame.
Both have tears streaming down their faces.
Silent Treatment (Zuko x reader)
Requested?: Yes by anon
Request:  can you do a zuko imagine where he says something he doesn’t mean to the reader and she gives him the silent treatment or tries to make him jealous? something along those lines, thank you !
Tumblr media
Zuko’s P.O.V.
“Then why don’t you go and date Sokka then!” I yell as I look at Y/N
“Is that really how you feel?” She asks before shaking her head “You know what, fine, you really want to do this kind of crap.”
I watch as she walks out of the room before I groan. I head towards the beach, running my hands through my hair.
“Why did I yell that at her?” I ask “I can’t believe how stupid I am!”
I look back towards the house, watch as Y/N sits on the porch, messing with her bending abilities before she stops, looking out towards the water.
“What did I just screw up?” I whisper
Your P.O.V.
You look towards the beach before you hear Katara yell something about food. You smile before walking towards the meeting room, a fake smile placed on your face.
“Thanks for taking care of dinner today Katara, it means a lot.” You say
“Of course. You know how it is at the south pole.” Katara laughs
You smile before serving your food when you hear the door open. You look up to see Zuko standing there, watching everyone. You feel your body tense up before you frown, looking back down at your food.
“Hey Y/N, think we could talk after the meal?” Zuko asks
You give him one look before you walk out of the room, heading to your room where you can lock the door.
Zuko’s P.O.V.
“What did you do that pissed her off so much that she’s giving you the silent treatment?” Sokka asks
“I yelled something that I shouldn’t have. Something that I didn’t mean whatsoever.” I say
I look towards the stairs before going back to my meal.
“Guess I just can’t give up, no matter how bad the silent treatment gets.” I say
“Give her a few days. Girls like their space.” Katara advises “Especially Y/N.”
“I don’t know if I can go a few days with this whole silent treatment thing.” I groan
I hear the others laugh before we return to our meal, everyone in silence.
I was talking about this to my cousin, and I feel like there's this misconception in fandom (especially for this who don't ship) that zuko and katara yell at each other a lot even as friends. Post TSR, I can't think of a single moment where either of them have lost their temper at the other?
Yeah, honestly, when people say that all they would do is yell at each other I just have to laugh because that’s literally the opposite of what we see of them on screen.
I mean, we’ve seen them argue, but never without any reason, and they actually manage to work it out in a healthy way and their relationship becomes stronger as a result. And that’s actually a sign of a healthy couple. If you’re afraid to disagree with your significant other or you can’t resolve fights in a healthy way then that isn’t a good thing. Obviously you don’t want to argue all the time, but no relationship is going to be always without conflict. The key is in whether you’re able to resolve it, and I’d argue that Zuko and Katara actually provide one of the best examples of that.
And the anti discourse around this annoys me in particular for two reasons. One, people insist that a strong female character has to be tempered, and because Katara is a character who does get angry and lose her temper and feels things very strongly, people feel like she needs a man to hold her back. Which she does not.
As for Zuko, because he’s an abuse victim people act like he’s too damaged to have a healthy relationship and he would just not be able to control himself emotionally, which is also false because he had like, a whole arc of learning to control his temper and changing himself and getting rid of toxic behaviors. Like, that happened in the show.
The one scene I can think of after “The Southern Raiders” where Zuko loses his temper at Katara is in “The Ember Island Players.”
This kinda turned into a meta about that episode so whoops.
Zuko complains about his portrayal in the play and Katara teases him, and he shouts at her but it’s without any of the volatile nature of some of the ways he took his anger out on others before.
Tumblr media
He doesn’t seem like he’s really angry at her, and look at her face. Look at how much fun she’s having! Katara, the girl who worried about being seen as too serious. Look at how natural she is with him. It comes across more as good-natured ribbing (dare I say...flirting?) on both their ends, even though both of them are upset about their portrayals. Katara isn’t fazed by his dramatic reaction and he’s immediately forced to eat his words. Which I think is an important aspect of Zuko’s arc of learning to control his temper and realizing that he doesn’t need to take everything personally. He’s forced to live with his own embarrassment, which fits with the theme of learning humility. We’ve seen him do the same thing several times after joining the gaang, where he initially gets angry but then makes a conscious effort not to overreact. Which isn’t always easy, but he’s trying.
Tumblr media
And part of it is also that he feels safe with her, despite his long face. He knows that she’s not really being mean. Katara can be mean even to people she loves, but she’s transparent with her emotions.
Contrast that with the way Zuko was with Mai, who he could never figure out. Mai always encouraged Zuko not to show his emotions and he predictably exploded because he was feeling things and he didn’t know what she was feeling or what she wanted from him.
This episode is actually another really good example of how well Zuko and Katara do get along and are able to resolve conflict even in a situation where both of them are upset and dealing with their own individual issues. Even though she made fun of him for it before, Katara is empathetic when she realizes what is really behind his anger, which is that he misses Iroh and feels guilty about the way he treated him.
Tumblr media
And it shows how well she knows him. She knows that he can sometimes do hurtful things that he regrets later, but she also knows that he loves Iroh. She knows this because this mirrors her relationship with Zuko. I mean, the relationships literally echo each other in this episode. She’s been in Iroh’s position, he hurt her and then sought her forgiveness (and she was also there when he betrayed Iroh. She is in a position both to understand and know that his regret is sincere and to reassure him that he can get Iroh’s forgiveness, as she also forgave him. That’s why she’s the one to comfort him outside Iroh’s tent a few episodes later.
It’s also kinda funny that they are so close in this scene because the scene right before this one is the zutara crystal caves parody. They go from moving away from each other, embarrassed at the idea of being a couple, to very close in a matter of minutes. The lady doth protest too much, methinks.
This is also right after Aang walks out in a huff, because of the whole stage zutara thing. Like? I wasn’t supposed to ship them here?
Aang and Katara argue this entire episode, and when Katara tries to comfort him about his anger at his portrayal in the play, he takes it out on her.
Katara: Relax, Aang. They're not accurate portrayals. It's not like I'm a preachy crybaby who can't resist giving overemotional speeches about hope all the time. [Everyone looks at her.] What?
Aang: [Turns around and sits down. Sarcastically.] Yeah, that's not you at all.
I remember having a really visceral bad reaction to the way Katara is treated in this episode that I couldn’t really articulate, and at the time I didn’t realize how much it had to do with shipping because I had no idea what the fandom was like when I was watching the show. I described it to a friend as Katara being treated like “the girl” of the group. Even though there are two other girls present, Toph is one of the boys, and Suki is in an established relationship with Sokka so she’s not a threat. But Katara is Aang’s love interest, and their relationship status is uncertain, so she’s treated like a source of conflict for Aang. I was able to pick up on this even though I didn’t feel particularly negatively towards the Kataang relationship at the time, but in hindsight this treatment of Katara is so tied with Kataang that it’s hard to avoid negative associations with the ship itself.
Katara spends a lot of time this episode trying to comfort Aang, who spends most of the episode angry at her for things she didn’t do and can’t help. She also has to deal with seeing a version of herself onscreen that is racist and misogynistic, but who is there to comfort her? Aang, Sokka, and Zuko all get upset about their portrayals, and are allowed to vent and be comforted, but Katara is punished for it and then told that she is like that, and mocked. She has to comfort Zuko, too, but at least she gets to mock him as well and give him a little bit of what she has to put up with. And he’s not the one who yells at her while she’s trying to comfort him, that would be Aang.
Tumblr media
If this episode was supposed to be anti zutara and pro kataang, it certainly did a poor job indeed. Even in this scene where they all look at her and fall silent when she says she’s not a sappy crybaby, and it’s supposed to be a joke because “haha, women are irrational, amirite?,” and then Aang responds sarcastically, the blocking clearly places Aang and Katara in opposition to each other, with Aang facing away from her and Zuko between them and the closest person in the group to Katara. The intent was obviously to make the audience worry for Aang that Katara won’t reciprocate, but it actually makes Katara and Zuko look like the more appealing relationship if you are looking at it from Katara’s perspective.
And then Katara and Zuko spend the rest of the finale getting closer while Katara and Aang argue and then wordlessly play kissy face in the last two seconds of the show.
May I please request a zuko fix where the reader is a huge flower buff (like knows the meanings and names) and is more graceful and peaceful rather than a fighter despite being a fire bender and zuko thinks she doesn't care or take the war seriously and when zuko joins the gang he doesn't see how much she contributes until he sees her taking care of everyone one night and questions the others and learns she in fact is a fierce fighter and he takes her up on a challenge to see for himself
playful fight? where there’s a lil pride involved? but there’s also a lot of pining? hmmmmm
also I love/hate writing fight scenes bc they’re SO FUN but also I’m such a perfectionist (and actually a martial artist so like... I see flaws u know?) that I actually have to get up and act them out and that’s time consuming but also a good workout so whatever ? I guess
you would not believe the amount of flower research in both the avatar and real world I did before going into this ask
this is too much to preface a story with gd I’m annoying but I hope u don’t mind that I was gender nonspecific. It’s a thing with me since there’s like never any male readers on tumblr. so even though you kinda asked for female reader I made it gender nonspecific because that’s what I do I hope it’s ok
anyway here we go!!
Tumblr media
Zuko simply did not understand.
The house where his family vacationed was big and beautiful, and a good place to hide until Sozin’s comet. What he never had noticed, until now, were the flowers growing all around the courtyard and the path to the beach. Over the years of disregard, the more exotic flowers had died and been replaced by native life, taking over much more than the flowerbeds he barely remembered the staff taking care of. There were fire lilies, those he recognized, but there were many other flowers that he had never bothered to learn the name of.
Y/N knew all of their names.
He didn’t understand you. He couldn’t figure you out. You were of the fire nation, and a bender, but he had never seen you fight. All you did, as far as he could tell, was pull the others away from danger, settle fights, and tend to flowers that seemed perfectly capable of survival all on their own. It’s not that it bothered him, but it did, because you seemed so absolutely noncommital. Nonchalant. Indifferent. How had another citizen of the fire nation come to the realization that the fire nation was evil, and gathered up the courage to join the avatar, and yet didn’t seem to care about the war at all?
When he’d first met you, he thought you didn’t have much use to the team at all. He thought you just another kid caught up in the war, like the others that were at the western air temple after the day of black sun. But after the brief battle with Azula, he came to see your worth.
“If only we had some Aloe,” you’d murmured as you passed him, on your way to Sokka’s side after he had complained of a sunburn, riding all day on Appa’s back.
“Can we get some?” Katara asked, leaning against the side of Appa’s saddle.
“No,” you replied, “too far away. It only grows near the Si Wong desert, and we definitely can’t go there right now.”
“So what can we do?” asked Katara again, and you shrugged, settling down beside Sokka, on his right while Toph clutched onto his left arm.
“The medical treatment for burns in the fire nation are less advanced then you’d expect. But there’s a few plants that can be soothing- even if not as much as Aloe. If there’s any banana leaf nearby our destination, that may help.” Zuko, though he’d remained silent, cocked an eyebrow in surprise. Medicinal knowledge of plants- that seemed extremely useful, especially given the group’s nomadic behavior. He briefly wished that you had been around while his uncle had had his quarrel with the white jade bush.
More so, though, in the following days he began to see your similarities to Katara- you were kind, and caring, and you made sure that the group was taken care of. You sat through worries and soothed fears the best you could, and that was admirable. You almost reminded him of his mother.
One question was left on his mind. If you were a fire bender- why did Aang need him to teach him firebending?
After you had gone to bed one night, he sat around a fire with Aang, Sokka, and Toph to pose that very question.
“Is it because they’re not a very strong bender? I’ve never even seen them use firebending, they must not be that good.”
“Oh, no,” Sokka said, “they’re actually really good. Probably better than you.” He laughed a bit after his words, earning a punch in the rib cage from Toph, which made Zuko think that Sokka was only trying to tease.
“Really?” He asked, looking to Aang, whose information he’d trust.
“Yeah,” Aang said, “they’re good. But they didn’t want to teach me- said that they didn’t have enough formal training. I think they just didn’t want to be that violent. They’re a pacifist, like me.”
“I could see that,” Zuko said, gazing into the fire. In his fingers he twirled an orange cyclamen, which you had given him before you’d gone to bed. When he’d asked why, you had responded that ‘it was a flower without meaning*, and the color reminded you of him’. He didn’t know what to do with it now, though, before he went to bed. He didn’t want to toss it in the fire, as that felt too heartless, but he knew it was dying now that it was picked. So, when he stood to return to his room for the night, he crouched by one of the overgrown flowerbeds and propped it up in the soil.
Maybe, from its turmoil, it would grow roots and live. Or maybe it would die surrounded by the beauty of the other flowers.
After spending all night wondering the true extent of your prowess, when morning came Zuko decided to find out.
“Spar me,” he said, catching you alone in the courtyard. “I need to be reminded what it’s like to fight a fire bender, and I’ve been told you’re quite good.” You let a little quirk of a smile onto your lips and turned to face him, tilting your head.
“You sure? What if it hurts your pride?” He shook his head, expression stoic as ever.
“It won’t. Either I’ll beat you or I’ll learn.” You took off an outer layer you’d been wearing and, carrying it, made your way toward the beach.
“Good way to think about it,” you said, laying down your jacket on a stone just outside the entryway. But as you straightened back up you planted your forward foot and flashed your other foot up and across, sending an arc of flame toward the prince. He quickly noticed that the game had begun and diverted the flame to his left, sliding his foot into a strong stance before punching flames toward you. By this time you had completed your spin and dove out of the path of his fire, rolling onto your feet and into a tight stance, your hands at your chest. You took them to your left, then swung them to your right to add momentum to your spin, lifting your feet from the ground for a round kick that sent another arc of flame toward him. He dove forward to get out of the way, getting closer to you, and sweeping one of your feet out from under you. You landed on your back, your fall cushioned as much as it could have been, and he pinned you down by hovering over you.
“You’re impressive,“ he said, and you gave him a look somewhere between pleading and fondness. His moment’s hesitation allowed you to swing your foot and use both its momentum and a shove from your elbows to flip him onto his back, your two foremost fingers creating a fire dagger at his throat, not close enough to threaten. This was only sparring, after all.
“Have you forgotten the rules of a match? It’s not over until the opponent yields.” He smiled, slightly, as he looked up at you.
“I yield.” You chuckled and stood up, giving him a hand to right him on his feet as well.
“You have more honor than I,” you told him, knowing that you only won thanks to trickery. A slight laugh rumbled from his chest and he tossed your jacket toward you again.
“How I’d love for my father to hear you say that.”
i’m absolutely galaxy braining right now thinking of an AU where sokka n zuko are two players on rival gaming comp teams who are constantly at each other’s throats .. would somehow include: “i lost to you once but it won’t happen again, got that?” AND/OR “ooo you wanna kiss me so bad right now” somewhere in there because that is exactly their dynamic. plus they defo used to play each other at the arcade when they were younger & after sokka’s family moved out of town neither of them knew they’d end up playing each other again til that day .. the Realisation™ as they spot each other across the stage .. the eyes that say “you.. [angrily],” and “you.. [longingly]” .. a childhood rival and a childhood crush suddenly appearing before their very eyes like some impossible coming-of-age-movie-like fever dream .. it’s about the Tension ! the Longing ! offering to play together as a sign of “good sportsmanship” and “for practice” and “to teach each other pointers so it’s a fair fight” .. feeling that high off of a win together that they get a little close, perhaps too close, and zuko’s tossing the same “i have to go” excuse he used to give him when he lost to sokka fair and square. maybe sokka’s a little hurt, actually a lotta hurt, because woah, he knew he and zuko weren’t exactly friends, but the guy didn’t have to look so genuinely disgusted at the idea of kissing him. and maybe zuko’s a little confused when he gets the silent treatment before and after events, because shit, he knew he maybe made things a little awkward between them by leaning in too suggestively that night, but not enough to make sokka want to completely avoid him..
anywho you get it .. enemies to lovers but it’s goofy with a dash of angst for that [chef’s kiss] pizazz
okay both of them wanting to kiss each other and then avoiding each other after because they both think the other didn’t want to kiss them is so zukka it makes my heart hurt
dream boy: part 3 - sokka x reader
Tumblr media
pairing: sokka x fem!reader
request: part 3 was requested by @missmorosis
wc: 2.7k
notes: i’m terribly sorry if it may seemed a bit rushed or not exactly consistent but i personally liked the way it ended. also this is the final part, i might make an epilogue if i actually finish everything i need to do.
part one | part one 1/2 | part two
sokka wasn’t able to see you until monday, purposefully ignoring all the texts from yours friends, not wanting to know if sokka actually told them what had happened or if he had decided to keep it to himself, either way, you were better off just staying off your phone until school started. you only unlocked your phone to text zuko back and even then you didn't always have the courage to do so.
you had made sure to wake up early in order to not cross paths with the watertribe boy, his sibling or just any of your friends until you absolutely had to, preferring to simply distance yourself from the others. of course you couldn't avoid them forever, you had over half of your classes with at least one of them, two of those being with sokka, the guy who you especially didn't want to see, history and gym. gym would be easy to avoid him in, you had become acquaintances with this lovely girl called jin, whom you also shared your math class with, you could just spend the whole period with her and avoid him. your real problem was going to be history. your teacher, mister kuzon, had informed the class that there would be a group project on any cultural aspect from the water tribe, and he had chosen the groups. the chance of you actually being paired with sokka was miniscule but the universe hadn’t seemed to be going easy on you lately.
and much to your dismay, the universe was in fact against you. when your history teacher’s voice had posted the groups, your heart had started racing as you approached the board to see the pairs, your heart was racing in fear and it dropped when you saw the name y/n next to sokka.
after being asked to sit next to your partner to get started, you stayed silent as you plopped down on the chair next to the boy who you were still trying to avoid, staying silent and keeping your eyes in front of you.
“are you going to work with me or is it going to be a silent treatment the whole time.” he questioned, turning to face you, arm hooked around the back of his chair as he looked at you desperately for any sign of you acknowledging his presence.
“i was thinking we could talk about the differences in the cuisine in the north and south.” you mumbled, chin on your hand as you kept your gaze on the board in front of you, ignoring the boy who was still searching for an answer.
“yeah, sounds good.” sokka sighed, giving up on receiving a straight answer from you. he turned back in his seat, disappointment radiating off of him, making you bite your lip in guilt. you shot him a glance from the corner of your eye as you saw him discreetly take his phone out to open the notes app but before you could see what he was typing he turned to face you, catching you right in the act.
“uh, saturday at your place?” seemed like the only logical way out of the embarrassing situation you had just walked into, still not breaking the staring between the two of you. you felt your heart speed up a bit at the extended eye contact, not having looked into his blue eyes in awhile, the last time being before you stormed out of his house after your confession.
“sounds good.” he offered you a small smile, happy to see that your attempt at a cold shoulder was somewhat backfiring, knowing that you couldn't avoid him forever. he let the stare linger a bit before turning his attention back to his phone and you quickly snapped back to your notes taken during the class. thanking yourself for not letting the stupid smile heat your cheeks up, now all you had to do was finish the class with a not so uncomfortable silence between the two of you.
the bell didn't take too long to ring before you had to move onto your next class which was the one you detested the most, science. courage surged through you as you waved goodbye to sokka, earning a bright smile back from the boy before you dashed out of the class. to anyone, that might have seemed rather pointless that you felt as proud as you did, a wave goodbye was considered an act of politeness, but that had been the first time you had really addressed sokka in any way since the unplanned confession. he had probably realised that as well, giving a reason for the sudden bright smile on his features.
you practically sprinted towards your science classroom, holding your books tightly to your chest to not let them fly out of your grip. you hoped zuko was already there, knowing he’d want to hear the rather big step you’d just taken in repairing your friendship with your childhood friend. you were surprised that the thought of slowly getting over him in order to just be friends had slipped your mind, remembering that this morning you didn't want anything to have to do with him for the rest of your life, wanting to just stay away from him to not ignite anything in you, but you were slowly realising it was ridiculous to throw away the friendship for your unrequited crush. you two may not be as close as before but you could still stay friends, you could still hangout with him without feeling like your heart was shattering every moment you’d meet his beautiful ocean eyes.
“zuko!” you called for him as soon as you spotted the back of his black haired head, whipping his head around to greet you with a grin, happy that you weren't ignoring him like he thought you might, considering your answers to his texts were rather sporadic and vague.
“happy to see you’re alive y/n.” he joked as soon as you caught up with him, both of you walking at the same height as you entered the room, taking a seat next to each other as you always did, even when the two of you werent as close as you were now.
“i think i’m ready to fully start moving on.” you announced, taking a deep breath before letting him know of your future plans, determination in yours eyes and tone as you felt set to move on from your crush.
“really? i'm surprised it didn't take longer.” his eyes grew a bit at your proclamation, not expecting to hear you say those words this early, thinking he’d have to see you distance yourself from everyone for weeks but it only took a day or two, making him slightly septic at how long you would actually last with your new resolution but nonetheless he was proud of you.
“yeah well i’m kind of stuck with sokka for a history project and i figured might as well start moving on from him. i still want to be friends with him.” you explained, taking your science homework out so you were prepared whenever the teacher would come on in.
“i’m proud of you y/n, its very mature of you.” he placed his hand on your shoulder, sincerity in his tone lifting your spirits up at the thought of repairing whatever damage you might’ve caused and the thought of the damage you were avoiding by taking action now instead of later.
saturday rolled around and you had managed to have some sort of small talk with sokka during your classes, still deciding to spend your lunch period with jin instead of your usual friends but it was a start to where you thought you would be saturday after you left. you had stopped eating with your friends a little over a week ago, opting to spend time with the lovely girl from your math class. you had had trouble sleeping friday night, scared of going to sokka’s house and falling back to where you started, back to square one, back in love with a friend who was already taken by a lovely girl.
your feet felt rather heavy as you walked down the familiar path to his house, bag with a your notebook and history course around your shoulder as you retraced the steps you had followed almost everyday during that particular summer, always going to sokka’s house to entertain yourself while school was out.
you first lingered in the air above the door for a couple of seconds, taking a deeo breath in to calm your nerves before you finally knocked. it didnt take long before it was opened, sokka with an eager smile on his lips was who greeted you behind the door.
“finally, you shouldve been here an hour ago!” he lamented jokingly as he moved out of the way to let you in, causing you to roll your eyes at how dramatic your friend was.
“sokka, im five minutes late.” you deadpanned, hastily taking your shoes off, leaning against a nearby wall for support.
“exactly!” he exclaimed, his voice cracking slightly and suddenly you felt as though nothing ever happened, as if your feelings had never come to make you want to change whatever relationship you had with him, simply feeling as though the two of you were just friends.
“really sokka? dont you reme,ber when i waited an hour for you outside in the freezing cold in the woods so we could make a campfire together? or that time where we were late in eight grade because someone accidentally put on ripped pants? or-”
“alright i get it.” he held his hands up in defeat at your inquisitive look, knowing you were only joking around with him to make him feel slightly guilty for all the times he had been late.
“my dad made seaweed noodles for us to eat while we work, hope thats okay.” shoving his hands in his pockets, waiting to see you reaction at the mention of one of your favorite dishes that he’d always insist his father to make you whenever you’d come by.
“no way!” you dashed into the kitchen, leaving sokka by himself at the entrance, surprised at how fast the two of you had seemed to ease back into things and some part of it seemed to good to be true but he was happy to have you back.
“wait for me!” he called for you, spending slightly to join you. a reminiscent smile on his lips as he watched you excitedly poor yourself a bowl, knowing where everything in the hous ewas from it practically being a second home for you during all those years.
“you’ll have to say thank you to hakoda.” you told him as you eyed the noodles, your stomach rumbling as you brought it to the table, it had been too long since you had eaten his father’s cooking.
“y/n, you havent even eaten it yet, how do you know its good?” he laughed as he watched you carefully bring the bowl to the dinner table, trying to get to it as fast as you could but still making sure to not let any of the broth spill out.
“because your dad’s seaweed noodles are the best!” you defended your previous statements, taking a seat as you waited for sokka to make his own bowl and bring chopsticks for the both of you. the watertribe boy nodded, slightly mocking you in his own playful way. while you waited for him to rejoin you, you took out the notebook you used for your history notes and grabbed a pen that was sitting on the table.
you scribbled down the title of your project and tapped your pen, impatient waiting to be able to dig into your steaming hot dish.
“have any ideas for the presentation?” sokka startled you slightly, coming from behind you to lean over your shoulde to see if you had written anything but he was met with a blank page.
“no, now get me my chopsticks idioy.” you shoved his head away, earning a protestful ‘hey’ from him as your brought your hand back to wram themselvbes on the bowl.
“here.” he placed the chopsticks next to the bowl before making his way around the table to sit in front of you, slowly blowing on his soup to cool it down.
“took you long enough.” you teased before you grabbed them to pick up some of the noodles, cooling them off with your breath before shoving some of it into your mouth. sokka started laughing at how quickly you engulfed the noodles that his father had spent the morning making.
you flipped him off, not caring at how ‘unlady like’ you might’ve looked but it had been forever since you had tasted his father’s seaweed noodles, during winter it was a staple food for whenever you would spend the night but since the weather had gotten warmer and you had grown more distant, it had been a hot minute since you had a traditional dish of the southern water tribe, something you’d most definitely use in your comparison of the different cuisines.
“before we start, i wanted to talk to you about something.” sokka brought his hand down, deciding not to eat just yet but rather address the elephant in the room.
“yeah?” you knew where this was going so you finished chewing what was in your mouth and swallowed, keeping your eyes on the food as you wiated for sokka’s question.
“so where do we stand, us? i mean two days ago you stormed off, after weeks of us not actually talking and now it feels like everything is fine. i just want to make sure that you’re okay.” you took a deep breath in, knowing this was coming, knowing you had to confront your feelings upfront now and not just push whatever you were feeling down, hoping it didnt blow over one day.
“if im being honest sokka, i like you, still, but i want us to be friends. im happy to see that suki makes you happy, but it might take some time for me to get over you so we might not ever be as close as before for my own sake but im willing to try my hardest to fix anything i mightve broken in the last couple of weeks. because i love having you as a friend and no matter how much it wouldve hurt to be with you before, i still missed my best friend.” you slowly lifted your head up, pouring out what was your mind without any filter, letting him know where you stood, sincerity written on your features as you wiated to see sokka’s reaction.
“that sounds good, whatever works for you. just happy i dont have to lose my oldest friend” he finally answered after silence settled between the two of you, letting your words settle and let him process your new confession.
you smiled back and then the two of you turned your attention back to the noodles, the two of you practically inhaling the food as the only sound was the muching of the seaweed and the slurping of the soup. a nice moment shared between two friends.
“you know, theres still girl that i just know you’d like.” sokka was the first to speak up, a small tease in his tone as he tried to set you up right after you told him you were trying to move on from him.
“sokka.” you threatened, not wanting him to go down whatever road he was about go down to, you finding it to be the wrong moment to bring this up.
“i’m just saying i have yue’s number if you want it!” he recoiled on his claim, but made sure to name drop the girl he supposedly thought was perfect for you. blood rushed to your cheeks at the mention of his ex girlfriend from middle school, rmebering how beautiful you thought the white haired girl was and how you had a small crush on her while they were dating.
the boy in front of you simply laughed, feeling content at where he now stood with his friend since kindergarten. he was your dream boy, but maybe not in the way you first thought. he was the boy of your dreams but not all dreams need to be romantic.
Freefall
Pairing: Toph/Aang
Rating: T+
Description:  For a brief moment they were free falling together, completely at gravity’s mercy. And Aang was the only thing Toph could see in this world.
*******
Toph really didn’t care what Aang was thinking.
She didn’t.
In fact, she wasn’t the least bit bothered when they flew back to their make shift camp in complete, absolute, mind numbing silence. A gentle woosh, the tell-tale sign of a typical earth kingdom summer night, filling up the space where laughter and chatter should have been.
She wasn’t the tiniest bit perturbed when the first thing the young airbender did when they landed was wordlessly slide off his seat atop Appa's head and immediately busy himself with setting up the camp without so much as a peep sent in her general direction.
And she definitely didn’t have any feelings of indignation when he finally approached her, extending a friendly arm into her space, only to realize, as their excitable lemur companion hopped off her shoulder and onto Aang's waiting forearm with a series of enthusiastic chirps and gurgles, that it was meant to be a perch for Momo.
It took everything within her to stay calm and not hault his movements by earthbending him halfway into the ground with a furious, “What is your problem?”, right then and there…
But she didn’t care. Really.
Though Toph would never admit it out loud she was aware of the fact that, as a child, she wasn’t always the best at controlling her temper or dealing with conflict. But she wasn’t a little kid anymore.  At nineteen, Toph had sat through a lifetime of diplomatic meetings (much to her chagrin), negotiated with countless criminals during hostage situations (even though she would have greatly preferred pounding them into the ground), and even survived her most challenging discussion to date: reconciling with her parents.
Which is precisely why when Twinkletoes decided to give her the silent treatment without reason or preamble she reacted as any mature, adult person would: she bended the biggest freaking earth tent she could muster and sat in it, seething, for over half an hour.
You know, as one does.
Digging her heels into the soft, loamy familiarity of the ground beneath her, she reached out using her seismic sense, pinpointing her cantankerous other half’s barely-there-feather-light vibrations. He was preparing something on a fire, his tall lanky form moving with uncharacteristically heavier steps, as if he was being weighed down by thoughts too grave to utter out loud. The earth bending master felt her stomach sink. Worry began to colour her irritation. She thought back on the day’s events in an effort to make sense of her companion’s sudden change in demeanor.
*******
He had been in high spirits earlier that morning when they had received a report of suspicious activity occurring around a small earth kingdom town. It was suspected that a nearby factory was being used as a hideout by a ragtag team of dangerously violent robbers and miscreants who had been terrorizing the townsfolk for months. Lucky for them, the Avatar and Sifu Toph Beifong were on the case. And unluckily for the robbers, the factory in question just so happened to be etched onto the side of a cliff.
The mountain was colossal, forebodingly so, the terrain peppered with jagged rocks and heights that promised any soul cursed with a slippery grip a nightmarish demise. This would have no doubt intimidated even the most experienced climber. But Toph and Aang merely smirked at the challenge. The robbers couldn’t have picked an area more suited to the duo’s talents if they tried.
“It’s almost like they’re begging us to take them down.” Aang grinned. With one simple movement he drew out his staff and then released the wings of the glider in another, ready to execute a plan they had concocted seemingly through shared thoughts alone.
“It would be rude of us not to, to be honest.” Toph agreed. Cracking her knuckles in anticipation. Confidence exuding from every pore.
They were almost always in sync. Their hearts and minds operating on a wavelength made just for the two of them.
“We should split up. I’Il take the skies. They probably won’t be expecting an aerial attack. That’s when you--"
“I'll take advantage of the distraction you’ll have created and metal bend as many of those goons into the walls as I can. Got it.”
He smiled fondly. Enamored by her cockiness. The affection he directed at her was almost audible.
“Anything to add?”
“Yeah, actually. How about this time I fly in through the roof? Just to shake things up a little.”
The sound of his laughter reverberated through her like a gentle shockwave and the subsequent quick kiss he placed on her forehead filled her stomach with butterfly-moths.
“You’re ridiculous.”
“But you’re considering it.”  She teased.
“Not gonna respond to that.” He had already started running, gaining the momentum needed to take off before shouting, “Be safe.”
“Do damage.” She called back.
She stretched out her senses, reaching downwards, deep into the ground beneath her, calling upon the stubborn element that was hers to enjoin. A large pile of rocks catapolted her into the air briefly, before another rose to catch her, and then another and another until she reached her destination.
The factory was quiet. And yet it wasn’t. The whirring, ticking, pounding and clanging of metallic machinery was unmistakable. If there was one sound Toph knew very well, it was the sound of metal: obnoxiously high-pitched and unapologetically sonorous, as if to mock the very nature of the soundless earth from which it was born, with its incessant clickity-clacking.
The factory had once been used to manufacture weapons for fire nation soldiers in the former Earth Kingdom colonies, but almost 8 years after the war had ended, it was practically abandoned. Save of course for the criminals said to be using it as a hide out. But that was just the thing. There was plenty of sound coming from the machines but Toph couldn’t detect a single human heart beat from within the building.
Did they receive the wrong intel?
Then it hit her.
She heard the explosion before she felt it.
A trap.
 The words had barely registered in her mind before she realized she was airborne. She was airborne and her ears were ringing. She was airborne and there were little chunks of debris falling all around her. She was airborne and the wind had been knocked right out of her. No she wasn’t airborne.
 She was falling.
Her entire world was a conglomeration of shapes, vibrations and sounds but without her beloved earth beneath her her world was empty and quiet and dark. And terrifying.
She had no idea how far off the ground she was, too disoriented to even make sense of which way was up or down. A distant blast of heat radiated towards her. She felt it on her face. And suddenly this all felt familiar. She had been in this situation before. Years ago, dangling precariously over the edge of a war blimp. A comet raging through the sky as she held onto Sokka’s fingertips for dear life. The feelings of suffocating hopelessness and indescribable fear forcing her to shed silent tears.
Toph was certain she was gonna die.
Both then and now.
Warm arms suddenly enveloped her. The quiet nothingness around Toph was replaced by the frantic yet comforting thump-thump of a familiar heart beat. He held her to him and probably said something she didn’t hear with the roaring of the wind and violent crunch of debris crashing down around them. For a brief moment they were free falling together, completely at gravity’s mercy. And Aang was the only thing Toph could see in this world.
*******
She wasn’t quite sure what exactly happened next after that. Next thing she knew they were back on solid ground, the inky black void dissipated the moment her feet touched the earth and she was almost overwhelmed by the return of all her senses. She felt like she could breathe again. The shock of what had just transpired soon left her system, and she had been back to herself again, ready to regroup and kick ass. Those robbers had just ticked off the World’s Greatest Earth Bender and, as soon as new intel surfaced, there would be a reckoning.
Aang on the other hand, after doing a quick inspection of her for any serious injuries had fallen into an almost meditative silence. Which concerned her at first but it went on for so long, it began to irritate her.
Correction. Irritated. She no longer cared.
Nope. Not at all.
She cared so little in fact that when Aang rapped lightly on the front of her earth tent she absolutely did not jump to her feet entirely too quickly, and she definitely did not bend the makeshift stone door down before he had even begun to knock a second time.
Okay. Maybe she cared a little.
He held something out in the hand that hadn’t been knocking. She recognized the aroma immediately. He had made congee. With mushrooms. Her favorite.
A peace offering?
“A bribe.” He stated sheepishly. As if he could read her mind. “Come over by the fire, I wanna try to heal your wounds.”
She’d be lying if she said she wasn’t touched by the thoughtful gesture. However, she wasn’t about to let him off the hook that easily though.
“So you decided to finally break your random vow of silence? S'that it?” she asked once they were settled by the fire.
She crossed her arms in an effort to look unimpressed only to immediately uncross them and wince in pain when her fingers brushed against a bruise on her forearm. Her arms were littered with them, cuts too. But those were the extents of her injuries. She had been very fortunate.
“What do you mean?” He responded distractedly, the sound of water splashing as he bended it onto his palms to heal her. He had learned from Katara so she knew he was competent at healing but only with minor surface level injuries.
“You’re kidding right? You’ve been ignoring me all day.”
“I have?”
She contorted her face in a way that she hoped conveyed both utter annoyance and the non-verbal equivalent of ‘duh'.
“Guess I just had a lot on my mind. I’m really sorry.”
“Uh huh.” An unwelcome thought suddenly occurred to her. She exhaled loudly and braced herself for her next words. “Look Twinkles, I understand if you wanna blame me for messing up back at the factory.”
“Wait, what?” his voice was genuinely incredulous, but she needed to say these words, even just for her own sake.
“I should have realized it was a set up sooner.” She clenched a fist in her lap.
“Toph.”
“They set off all those machines to drown the bomb out but still I should’ve--"
“Toph.”
Aang silenced her with a gentle tug on her wrist and pulled her closer.
“I don’t blame you. At all. Not even a little bit.” He cups one of her newly healed hands in both of his. The gesture annihilates any ensuing words she had planned to say. “I almost lost you today, Toph. I kept thinking about what would have happened if I hadn’t caught you in time…and you looked really scared…I don’t even wanna think about what could’ve--,” he breathed in deeply, gathering his emotions, summoning courage, “I love you, Toph.”
Her whole body stiffened in shock. But he continued on, his heart beating with all the nervous energy of a trapped sparrow-keet, yet his voice remained calm and betrayed nothing.
“I know this is kinda sudden and unexpected,” he carried on while beginning to heal the abrasions along her arm with feather light touches, leaving a trail of goosebumps in his wake. “but I’m sure of how I feel now. I guess I have been for a while actually.”
She blinked at him, mouth slightly agape. He swallowed anxiously.
“You don’t have to say it back. I completely understand if this is too random. I just wanted you to know that I care about you, Toph.” He chuckled in spite of himself, “A lot.”
He had moved his hands to heal the cut that ran along her face, just below her eye, swiping it away with the stroke of his thumb across her cheek bone. Before he could move his hand away, Toph held it in place with her own. A move that surprised both of them.
“I love you too, Aang.” She said honestly. She had never ever been one for mushy declarations but…he made it so easy. She had long suspected it and the sincerity in both their heartbeats merely confirmed it.
“Really?” Their faces were close together now, foreheads almost touching. The proximity thrilled her.
She answered him by closing the gap between them, crashing their lips together. He immediately responded grabbing the back of her neck and deepening the kiss, causing her to lose all coherent thought. Her arms wrapped around his neck instictively and for the second time that day, it felt as if the whole world had fallen away and there was only him. Neither of them noticed the abandoned bowl of congee tip over and spill into the soil. All Toph was aware of in those moments were needy hands and a series of heady kisses on her cheeks, her nose, along her jaw, on her neck and her eyelids, until he claimed her lips once more.
She felt like she was falling again.
They finally broke apart, panting, eyes closed, hearts racing, foreheads touching.
Before her senses returned to her in full, Toph found herself wanting to tell him more. She wanted to tell him he meant so much to her too. She wouldn’t know what to do without him either.
 And that she thinks she’s not afraid of falling anymore because she knows he’ll catch her…
But mushy declarations still weren’t her forte. She would say all of this to him. One day.
Today, she gave him one more quick, lingering kiss, smirked and told him,
“The congee’s getting cold.”
Take My Leave /3 - Zuko x Reader
Warnings: none
requested one shot
part one part two
“(your name), there’s more flowers again and a letter for you,”Katara yells from the front door, I sigh as I continue to chop the meat for the ramen, this has been going ever since we talked to each other, he’s been sending me flowers every morning. “He’s really showing you his commitment now,”Katara places the bouquet and the letter on the counter top infront of me, I smell the flowers, he hasn’t forgotten them, my favourites, (favourite flower). I quickly wash my hands and drying them before picking up the envelope. I trace over the neatly printed name before ripping it open and pulling out the fancy paper.
My dearest (your name),
I hope you enjoyed the flowers I have been sending you, I know these are your favourites, I could never forget them. It was our first proper date where I had brought them for you and your eyes just lit up with so much happiness that it made my heart go crazy. (Favourite flower), they truly are so beautiful but not compared to you. I know I’ve been stepping out of line in our acquaintanceship but I just want to give you everything and anything to make up for what I’ve done but I know nothing will ever will. Anyways I know you don’t care and should just get to the point but I’ll be throwing a celebration for the partial success of the peace in all nations, you’re invited and so are the others. Please come, you’re a big part of this celebration, you’re the one pushed me to do it, I hope you consider it.
love you always,
Zuko
You make it so hard to move on. I return the letter in it’s envelope and continue on with the lunch,”so what does it say?”Katara eyes the closed letter with curiousity,”hes invited us to a celebrate about an achievement,”I shrug my shoulders as I finish the toppings of the ramen,”also can you call the rest, lunch is ready,”I shoo her away before she can ask more. I set the table and the rest pile in the dining room,”yay (your name)’s ramen,”Aang cheers before digging in right away which earns his a scolding from Katara,”Ahh yes, you make the best ramen,”he liked it too, I politely smiled before eating at my own meal. ,”uh so are you gonna attend the celebration?”the air becomes uncomfortable, it’s still not an easy subject to speak about Zuko, though weeks have passed I have not fully moved on yet, my heart was still shattered, how can you unlove a man who had taken all your firsts. It still hurts to think of him but I needed to refocus my life and to learn to be okay when seeing him or even speaking about him, it’s part of moving forward. “I might,”I muttered silently but was loud enough for them to hear me, they all seemed surprised but tried to hide it, I need this for healing.
***
The large form of Appa lands on the nicely tailored garden of the Fire Nation Palace, a feeling of dread overtakes me and I start regretting my decision on coming here. The familiar grounds remind of so much sweet memories of Zuko and I but also held so much pain, it was bittersweet to be here. Down below, several guards are stationed and the Firelord stands awaiting for us to get down, he was as handsome as ever, he seemed tired and his face lingered of the sadness. I let the rest of the gaang get down before I followed suit, “(your name) you came,”the ember-eyed man doesn’t even try to hide his surprise as pink dusted his cheeks, “uh yeah,”I awkwardly wave. “The maids will escort you to your rooms, I have a meeting so I’ll join all you at the party,”he glances one last time at me before walking inside the palace I once called home.
“Lady (your name), welcome back it’s so good to see you! The palace staff have missed you,”my heart aches as I stare at the maid who took care of me,”I shall escort you to your rooms,”she motions us to follow her, we gather our belongings and enter the palace, passing through the familiar hallways. We pass the door to Zuko’s office and a wave of nausea hits me as I recall the last memory I had, I grit my teeth as I feel tears burn my eyes. A hand grips my forearm and it brings me out of my trance,”are you alright?”Sokka turns me to him in worry, ”yeah, I’m good. Just some dust in my eyes from flying,”I smiled before wiping the tears away and following the maid up ahead. The room that I had entered was not as large as the Firelord and Firelady suite but that’s understandable, a beautiful (colour) coloured robe catches my attention, it was hung on the wardrobe, it had been stitched with entricate designs. “The Firelord had it custom made to fit you, he requests you wear it for tonight’s party,”the maid notices my confusion and explains it for. “Oh, thank you,”I politely say and dismiss the maid, I huff in annoyance, what are you doing Zuko.
I sit on the bed, laying lazily as I stared up the ceiling. I can’t take you back, I’m trying to move on from you but you make it so hard. He’s been showering me with gifts and love letters, he makes this so complicated, I grip my hair pulling on them, I hate how I feel this way. I close my eyes and try to sleep off my confusion but I suddenly jolt up as Mai infects my thoughts, I frown at the thought, where is that dumb bitch she. I haven’t seen her lurking in the palace, now I’m annoyed, does she still stay here as he tries to win me back? I hope fucking not. A soft knock interrupts my thoughts,”come in,”I yell out and the maid peeks her head through,”I can here to prepare you for the celebration my lady,”the all too familiar says as he prepares the bath and get my vanity ready. “Oh no, it’s alright. I can do it myself,”I laugh and wave her off but she insists to help and stay.
“I’m sorry my lady but the Firelord had asked me to assist you,”
“How about the rest?”she shakes her head no, why the special treatment Zuko, I sigh in defeat as I let the maid do her thing. I can’t discern what I’m feeling, it’s giving me a headache, I will just ignore it for now and deal with it when the time comes.
“You are all done, my lady. It was so nice to assist you again,”the maid smiles as she hairsprays my hair for the last time, I glance at myself in the mirror and Iooked really good, I smile at her and she bows before leaving. Another knock sounds in the room and this time it’s Sokka, who cleaned up well, “finally you’re ready. Come on get your ass out here,”he playfully scolds me, I walk over and take his outstretched arm,”but you look really beautiful (your name),”his eyes shining and I can’t help but flush in pink, “jeez don’t be like,”I slap his arm and we both laugh heading to the ballroom. It was no surprise that Fire Nation could throw a party, the ballroom was decorated lavishly with mountains upon mountains of food, reminds me of the days where I used to help in organising event like these. “May I have this dance, pretty lady,”Sokka bows jokingly and I play along accepting his hand as he guides us in a funny dance, embarrassing himself. I scan the room and it’s full of diplomats from other nations and the nobles of the Fire Nation, but no Mair or Zuko.
A hand taps my shoulder,”Can I take the lady for a dance,”his deep voice sends shivers down me, I turn to look at the man and he was as handsome as ever,”I don’t know, can you?”Sokka almost sneers at the Firelord but I squeeze his hand to calm him down,”it’s okay, Sokka. We’re friends now,”I smile but I don’t know if I meant it, Sokka let’s go and Zuko takes my hand. I awakwardly look around,”you look really beautiful tonight, I didn’t expect you to wear it,”he whispers in my ear and my face burns bright red,”uh I didn’t want it to go to waste, since you had it made,”I stammer, feeling flustered at his closeness, I step back a little but he pulls me closer to his body,”Zuko, we’re just friends,”I tell him as I attempt to move away again but he keeps his hand firm on me,”I know but just let me have this, I’ve missed being close to you,”my chest clenches and I grit my teeth I’ve missed it too,”but this is over stepping the line,”I tell him and he hesitantly lets me go, I stare at his eyes and they hold genuine sadness but I had to hold my ground.
“Can I take you for a walk outside?”I nod my head and he leads me out to the gardens, a place that was special to us,”where’s Mai?”I couldn’t help myself but ask, I needed to know for my sanity,”I’ve kicked her out, she’s ruined it all. you mean everything to me,”he looks out ahead of us, I almost felt sorry for him,”no, you’ve ruined it. It was decision at the end of the day,”I say truthfully and flinches, as much as it hurts this was the facts, he can’t fault anyone for what he chose to do. “I guess, I just can’t accept it. I couldn’t grasp that I’ve lost you l,”he sighs in defeat, he stops and turns to me. “Have you thought about us?”his voice shaky, grasping me arms for support,”I do,”I was honest, we needed this, we needed to settle.
“But, I don’t see us going back to each other,”it hurt me to say it but I continue,”a little part of me wants us to get back together Zuko, I just can’t do it. You’ve broken my trust and our relationship’s trust. It’ll take a lot of fixing,”tears fall from my eyes,”I know it will. I’m so sorry but I’m going to try my hardest to earn back your trust and love. Will you ever consider me again?,”he voice broken, I still love you. “No. Maybe in another lifetime,”I shake my head and his face falls but his eyes hold a new fire of determination. “It’s not a never, I won’t stop until my last breath,”he vows to me and I just stare at him, there’s no stopping Zuko if he’s set his heart in something,”we’ll just have to see,”I face the stars again, feeling slightly lighter and a little less sad, Zuko’s face holds a genuine happy and relieved facial expression.
“I’m going to work hard to earn your love and trust back. I will never again take my leave, I love you”
headcanon dump; piper mclean
piper loves halloween, loves to dress up in costumes. only time she’d willingly wear a dress if it was apart of a costume. the only downside, is the racists / offensive costumes and she will call them out, more so now that she has found her voice
piper, would beat around the bush about it ‘no, i do… okay maybe i think they’re cute… or whatever, they have a nice personality. but, it’s whatever.’
piper watched avatar the last airbender as a kid, she loved katara and sokka and grew to love them more, and then all water tribe as she got older due to the representation of natives / indigenous. this is a little bit into why she wanted to learn to surf
contrary to what rick wrote, piper is NOT the jealous type.
leo was the first person that piper has actively told who her father is. everyone else either figures it out themselves, or they never knew.
piper would love to do group halloween costumes. group over couple, but would totally do couple
piper isn’t into a lot of ‘girly’ things, but the one thing she does take pride in and doing is hair. just brushing her own, or a friend’s, or just running her fingers through her, or a s.o, or friend - it calms her
piper would wear a tux to her wedding. she really isn’t into dresses, like at all.
i hope, that anyone who dates piper KNOWS they come in ‘second’ place to her best friend, leo valdez. because once she gains her memories back bc fuck rick i’m giving my kids their memories back. it was just the two of them, and she will fight tooth and nail for his happiness
reminder that piper’s eyes are BROWN
piper’s father always tried to keep piper out of the tabloids. always. the media only truly knows of her name, the rest is just ‘rumours’.
piper, will never admit this to anyone, but doing someone’s hair, is relaxing to her. something as simple as just brushing it, will relax her.
piper, upon realising she is a demigod, realises the reason her eyes never stay one colour is due to her mother. she then asks one of her siblings on how to control it. so now, most of the time, her eyes are a brown colour.
piper has almost gone to jail for her ‘stealing’
and also, she has been labelled a kleptomaniac because she simply asked for things, and was handed them, only for the owner or dealer to realise what happened and call the cops.
most times, the owners / dealers and cops she has dealt with were, white a majority of the time, and so, even though piper is telling the truth of her asking and them giving, they don’t believe her for many reasons, one where the person was racist and couldn’t look past her being native, and just blamed her away, and the other main reason is her being a teenager.
WARNING: do not leave your hoodie / sweatshirt / jumper lying around, because if piper finds it, she will wear it and end up claiming it has her own
piper got better at maths, when she had leo to help her. she wasn’t the best with that subject in general
piper totally asked leo to spend the holidays with her, knowing he didn’t have a family to truly go home too and she wasn’t sure if her father would still be out shooting, or not.
leo is the first person in a long time that piper has trusted with knowing who her father is. her telling him, meant a lot of trust went into it. piper would trust leo with her life and has done so
piper totally had watched the hercules show & movie made by disney. she even had the videos… when she got back from the war… she burned them all. bc one, fuck hercules  two, all the wrong things
piper has honestly only cut her hair twice. when grandpa tom died, and then to get her father’s attention, because it broke tradition and she remembered that cutting your hair wasn’t something that her family did unless someone died or are needing a fresh start ( which explains why her father does cut his hair for roles as a ‘new start ‘ ), so piper, fustrated with her father being away, grabbed the first pair of scissors which happened to be safety and cut her hair. it really did give her father quite a shock.
piper tends to braid her hair more often then not.
as stated before, piper has only actually cut her hair twice. once when grandpa tom died and one in an act of defiance. the next time she cuts her hair, is when she believes leo to be dead. leo is a close friend, best friend . she cut her hair into messy bob.
when leo does come back, she gives him the silent treatment for like… a day.
A Series of Confessions Chapter 6
Read Chapter 5 (which I didn’t mean to leave off the last line lol)
“I can think of something by then.” He said.
~
Much to the minister’s delight, Zuko threw himself into festival preparations. He was more involved than he had been any other year, and the palace staff was hopeful that this was the change they had been waiting to see in the Fire Lord.
What they didn’t know was how Zuko avoided both Katara’s assignment and Sokka’s anger by preoccupying himself with the festival.
It was a minor festival, one to mark the middle of spring. In some villages, it was used as a mass wedding celebration having taken on some ancient fertility ritual. Something about one fire being able to propagate others without dimming.
Ursa had indeed been introduced as the new princess at the fire blossom festival. The celebrants had gone nuts, talking about the fires of Sozin and Roku finally being joined together. Zuko could only imagine how overwhelming it must have been, and how much Ozai would have enjoyed her discomfort.
Not really the happy thought Katara was looking for.
“Fire Lord.” A minister interrupted his thinking and Zuko snapped his head up.
“Yes?”
“Have you given any more consideration to who you are bringing to the festival?”
“Pardon?”
The minister looked uncomfortable and Zuko cleared his throat.
“I had assumed my friends would be joining me.” He answered.
“But Majesty…” The minister paused as Zuko looked at her warily.
“I’ll be sitting on a platform the entire time. I think I’d be much better company for those who already know me.” Zuko said.
“Of course Fire Lord.” The minister said and bowed. As she exited the room, Zuko sighed. Now he had to actually invite them.
Zuko found the siblings where he usually did, in the library. Katara reclined on one of the few couches, her legs tossed over an arm and her feet kicking slowly in the air. She held a heavy tome over her head, her eyes ticking back and forth as she read.
Sokka was at a desk, scrolls flattened and weighed down with various objects, none of them actual paperweights.
At least he hadn’t used a knife to pin one to the table this time.
“Find anything interesting?” Zuko asked.
Katara glanced at him but Sokka didn’t even look up.
“Always. I hadn’t realized Roku sent Sozin so many books.” Katara said. As she sat up, Zuko walked over to Sokka.
“If you’re looking for anything incriminating, we keep those in the crypt.” He said.
“I’ve already been through there.” Sokka said brusquely. “I’m looking over these navy plans. I think the Earth Kingdom junkers are more suited to the Poles, but I’d like to see if there’s anything I can adapt from the warships.”
“Does this mean you’re not mad at me?” Zuko asked.
Sokka planted his hands on the table and stood up, hesitating before looking over.
“Zuko, I’m pissed.” He stated.
“What do you want me to say?” Zuko shot back.
“Maybe ‘I’m sorry?’” Sokka exclaimed, throwing his hands up. “Or a ‘Sokka you’re my best friend and I’ve only ignored you because of my chronic diarrhea?’”
“What?”
“I can’t really think of a good reason why you’ve been giving me the silent treatment otherwise.”
“I’ve got some great herbs for diarrhea.” Katara interjected and Zuko groaned, covering his face with his hands.
“At the very least, you can admit you’re full of sh-” Sokka began.
“I’m sorry.” Zuko interrupted. “I just… didn’t think you really wanted to see me.”
“Why would I not want to see you? We’re breakout buddies!” Sokka replied.
“That’s adorable.” Katara said and Zuko sighed.
“I thought if people, you know, really wanted to be around me then they’d…” Zuko circled his hands around each other as he strained. “Stick around.”
Sokka and Katara looked at each other and Zuko felt a wave of shame sweep over him.
“Zuko, you’re still our friend even when you can’t see us.” Sokka said.
Katara got up from the couch and walked over, putting her hand on his arm.
“And we’re here now.” She said softly. “We can remind you how much you’re loved.”
She hugged him and something unknown solidified under Zuko’s ribs. As Sokka came around and hugged his other side, Zuko chuckled.
“Do you guys want to go to a festival?” He asked.
“We love festivals.” Sokka and Katara said in unison.
On their anniversary, Aang takes Appa and flies all the way to Aunt Wu’s village and climbs up the same volcano he faced at 12 years old, just to pick a handful of panda lilies, fly back, and give them to Katara.
Aang makes Katara breakfast in bed, but he can’t cook, so Katara is forcing the uncooked dough and burnt meat down her throat all the while praising his none existent cooking skills because she doesn’t have the heart to tell him.
Sokka teaching Aang how to throw boomerang, but unfortunately Aang is not very accurate and happens to hit the jackpot in knocking his girlfriend Katara in the head with said boomerang, earning him and Sokka a mouthful of water and silent treatment for a week.
I just know that some nights Aang and Katara would be lying and bed and Aang would go “want to dance” and she’d smile stupidly and take his hand and they’d stand in the middle of the room and slow dance.
When one of them wakes up one day and feels under the weather the other commands them to stay in bed and takes care of them the entire day, not letting them move a muscle.
Katara secretly pulls out a special air nomad fruit pie recipe she got from one of their air temple trips, and tries to make them as a surprise for Aang, but fails miserably. So Aang walks into the kitchen early morning to see a fruit stained Katara and a mess in the kitchen, realizing what she was trying to do, so he helps her clean the whole thing up and teaches her how to make them right.
It’s Katara’s 18th birthday. She wakes up in the morning to see flowers and a note at her bedside. The note is from Aang and it writes happy birthday and everything Aang would say to Katara on such a day. But in it there’s also a hint to go find another hint that leads to another hint and so on. So basically he’s given her a sort of scavenger hunt, to which each place she finds, there’s a gift for her. It’s almost the end of the day and she hasn’t even seen Aang yet, but her last hint tells her to go to the Jasmine Dragon. The gift from this last hint was a dress, and the note left with the dress told her to wear it to the Jasmine Dragon. When she finally gets there, walking up the stairs, she sees Aang at the top, in the exact same spot they kissed years ago at the end of the war. He’s wearing nice and formal air nomad clothing and smiling down at her. When she meets him there comes the happy birthday and then the speech of how much he loves her and such.... and then he proposes.... she says yes excitedly. The rest of the Gaang comes out of the tea shop because they wanted to surprise her, and they all spend the rest of their night at the tea shop together after Aang and Katara get engaged on her birthday.
Aang crying each time one of his kids were born is something I believe in while not having to see it.
Aang arranging date nights for him and Katara often to take a break from life and kids and stress while Bumi, Kya, and Tenzin all stay with Uncle Sokka.
Katara secretly keeping the flower necklace Aang made for her... Aang finding it in the drawer of her desk and realizing she’s kept it all this time.
Note
Zuko snapped his fingers like a zippo lighter and holds it for sokka while he blazes
Blaze It Hotman
It was Sokka’s idea for Zuko to try pot. The Water Tribe Warrior Zuko seemed more stressed than usual and needed to chill out for once in his unbelievably stressed-out existence. So here they were, sitting in the royal gardens with Sokka rolling the plant inside of a piece of brown paper, while his guards Kenzo and Lee stood watch.
His great grandfather Sozin had tried and failed to eradicate the plant from the Fire Nation. One of his less noted failures.
Sokka held the joint up with a smile and said one of the most baffling things that Zuko had ever heard come out of a mouth that wasn’t Aang or his uncle, “Blaze it!”
“What?” If Sokka hadn’t been the one to say it, Zuko would have been sure that Aang was once again making up more prewar Fire Nation speak. Flameo and hotman were most assuredly not things anyone other than the air bender had ever said. He refused to ask his uncle if he was correct in his assumptions.
“Something I picked up from Aang” Zuko was right. “Use your jerk bending to light the joint.”
“Oh.” And Zuko complied, snapping his right thumb and middle finger together to create a single small flame. Sokka proceeded to happily light the joint with before bringing it to his lips and taking a drag off of it, with a happy sigh. The scent reminded Zuko of Jet, which brought up some mixed and mostly negative emotions. He felt like it was his fault the guy had possibly died.
When the joint was handed to Zuko, he took in a lungful of the stuff and promptly suffered a small coughing fit. His boyfriend proceeded to laugh his ass off at this.
“I thought you said this was relaxing?” He coughed out. “This doesn’t feel very relaxing.”
“You’ve really never gotten high before? Have you?” Sokka laughed as he wiped tears of joy from his eyes. Zuko glared, despite finding the sight endearing.
Sokka was still giggling to himself when he took the joint back and said, “Okay, new plan. When I breathe out my next hit, you breathe it in. Got it?” Zuko gave a single silent nod before Sokka took another drag off of the joint and pulled Zuko into his lap suddenly. The fire bender hadn’t been expecting. The hand that rested itself on his hip calmed him, however. And when Sokka let out a cloud of the smoke, Zuko breathed it in slowly.
He didn’t feel any different, but Sokka did seem somewhat more loose and relaxed. So he took a few more hits this way until finally, he felt something happen. It didn’t happen all at once, but when Sokka let him take a few more hits from the joint itself, this time Zuko didn’t cough quite as much, he felt himself beginning to relax as his worries faded away from his mind.
“My dad would be angry if he knew I was doing this,” Zuko said plainly.
“Yeah, and the guy would be angry about you doing a ton of other perfectly normal things. Trash Lord Ozai is not really the best judge of right and wrong.” Sokka pointed out with a smile.
“I never said he was,” Zuko said with a smirk. “Only that knowing would upset him.”
“Well, he is your dad and has a right to know if you’re smoking pot.” Sokka agreed in an exaggerated voice of the utmost seriousness. “But let’s enjoy this first.”
Sokka’s petting of his silk-clad hip felt nice, as did the rest of the silk that covered him. Everything felt soft and wonderful, as he began to slip into a dreamlike haze. Sokka made no move to take the blunt back from Zuko, as he threaded his free hand into Zuko’s hair and verbally marveled at its softness.
“I mean seriously.” The Water Tribe Warrior groaned. “Have you ever felt your hair? I need to know what hair products the royal hair washers use on it because it feels amazing.”
“I mean it’s my hair, Sokka. Of course, I’ve felt it.” Zuko rolled his eyes. “And uh… I think its coconut? I’m not sure. I just had a hair treatment yesterday, so maybe if you asked Shi Lin, she might be able to-”
But whatever he was about to say was lost forever, when he full-on moaned at the tug Sokka gave his hair.
He hadn’t thought something like that could feel good, let alone as amazing as it had.
Sokka let go of his hair to take away the joint, eyes going wide, and grinding it into the ground.
“Spirits…”, Sokka swallowed before growling, “Zuko, honey, I want to try something, but I need to know if you want me to…”
“Yes, Sokka. Anything you want.” Zuko was pretty sure he knew what his boyfriend had in mind, and while normally he wouldn’t be open to doing that kind of thing somewhere so public, he was the Fire Lord and these were his royal gardens.
Zuko undid the sash of his robes, but Sokka took it from him and shook his head.
“Your clothes are staying on Fire Lord.” But the twinkle of desire was still in his eyes as he ordered, “Put your hands behind you back, darling.” And Zuko did.
Sokka had Zuko twist around to give him a clear view of his wrist so he could tie them together behind his back with the sash before he ran his hands down Zuko’s sides dragging the silk of his robes against them, and Zuko shuddered at the feeling. He was beginning to understand what was happening.
“You make the most beautiful sounds, Zuko.” Sokka rasped, his mouth suddenly sounding dry to Zuko. “I want to hear every single one of those gorgeous sounds.”
Lee and Kenzo, his guards, shifted awkwardly where they were keeping watch. Zuko had forgotten them, until now. Suddenly he thought about everything the guards that stood watch outside his bedroom must hear at night and he flushed. He had never even thought about that until right now. What did they think of their Fire Lord’s bedroom activities?
But those thoughts were cut short when Sokka gave his hair another tug.
The sound that he made was filthy, and he could see the way that the two guards tensed at it.
“Don’t look at them,” Sokka snarled. “I want you to look at me. They can look at you and listen to you, but only I get to touch you. Am I understood?”
“Agni, yes, Sokka, yes.” Zuko loved it when Sokka was possessive.
“Good.” And then Sokka bit him. It wasn’t hard enough to break the skin, but it was hard enough that Zuko shouted and bucked his hips. It hurt but just like when Sokka pulled his hair, it felt good. Later Zuko might be horrified by how much he enjoyed it, but right now he was shamelessly begging for more.
A thumb rubbed the silk of his robes against a nipple and he pressed himself into the touch, gasping at the feeling.
“That’s a good Fire Lord.” Sokka praised. “Keep making those pretty little sounds, beautiful.”
Zuko’s wrists strained against their silk bindings, as he rutted against Sokka’s lap. It was rapidly becoming too much, and Sokka had only just started. Zuko was going to demand that they do this again.
Sokka rolled his hips against Zuko’s own finally, as he licked a stripe up the fire benders throat.
The hot breath against the rapidly cooling damp was what set Zuko off.
He came crying out Sokka’s name.
Sokka didn’t stop, however, now chasing his own completion. He jerked his hips against Zuko mashing his lips against Zuko’s own. Once more, twice more, and finally on the third jerk, he followed the fire bender into completion.
They were both gasping for breath, as they slowly came down from not one but two highs.
“I don’t think we should tell your dad about this part.”
Zuko wanted to smack his boyfriend, groaning, “Way to ruin the moment.”
“So… You want to do this again?”
“Yeah, I do, you idiot.”
“I love you to, Babe.”
“Love you to, Sokka.”, Zuko sighed back. “Now could you please untie my arms?”
Sokka laughed, as he maneuvered Zuko off of his lap and obeyed.
Zuko rewarded Sokka with a kiss.
don’t jump where i can’t catch you
This was a familiar feeling, trying to outfly the fireballs being thrown their way, one Sokka really hadn’t missed when they’d been undercover in the Fire Nation. Still this time felt particularly harrowing, not only did the surprise attack force them to split up their group, and when they’d just gotten Dad back, but also... Sokka discreetly slid his eyes over to the newest member of their group as if to confirm that he was safe in the saddle and not in a million broken pieces at the bottom of the mountain.
So he and Zuko were sort of, kind of friends now after their whole prison break experience. Now he’d known, from the day he’d first met the prince at the South Pole that Zuko was a reckless idiot but today’s stunt had been insane even for him. First the guy rushes out to take on the whole spirit blasted armada by himself, fighting his homicidal sister and then get himself blasted into the air. He knows the main reason Aang had insisted on storming the armada was to grab Zuko but Sokka’s still kind of reeling from the fact that Zuko have fallen to his death if they hadn’t gotten there at just the right time.
Speaking of Aang, he was sitting up at the front steering the bison away from the crumbling air temple. He had his back turned to them but Sokka had suffered through enough cold shoulders from Katara to know that his friend was mad.
“What was that, Zuko,” Aang finally ground out once they were safely out of firing range and were able to slow down to a more reasonable speed and altitude.
“Yeah, Zuko, how did Azula know where we were hiding?” Katara asked, her face twisted with anger. He hated how much she looked like Azula in that moment.
“She probably was able to follow the trail we left from the warship, it’s not exactly easy to sneak around in a giant flying ship,” Sokka immediately defended. Katara’s suspicions and jibes against the firebender stopped being amusing the moment he realized how serious she was. “They were bound to find us eventually, it’s dangerous for us to stay in one place too long, it was best we moved on.” Katara glared at him and he glared right back. Zuko, all the way in the back of the saddle, looked uncomfortable as he usually was as the center of attention.
“I don’t care,” Aang pronounced suddenly with that same hard, barely controlled voice that silenced them all, “about Azula or how she found us. I care,” he turned around and the anger in his normally passive grey eyes bored into Zuko, “that Zuko almost died for no reason at all.”
“I didn’t, obviously,” Zuko said with an eyeroll, crossing his arms protectively over his chest as he slouched against the saddle.
“Not for lack of trying, bud,” Sokka said. “I’m with Aang on this one, that was stupidly dangerous, emphasis on stupid.”
“Someone needed to distract Azula and her entourage while you guys escaped, unless you wanted to see another Air Temple destroyed,” Zuko shot back.
“Okay so after your oh so brilliant plan how were you planning on getting back to us?” Suki asked with a frown while Toph turned her unsettling blank stare in Zuko’s general direction.
“I’d have managed,” the prince said curtly before sneering a little bit towards Katara, “I am, after all, an expert in hunting down the one hope for the world.” Sokka twisted his lip, uncomfortable with the self-deprecating tone in the other’s voice. Zuko’s never been a well of emotional stability but he’d seemed even more off-kilter since the Boiling Rock.
“Stop that,” Aang commanded once again causing everyone else to quiet. Looking again, Sokka realizes that his friend isn’t just angry, he’s furious. The tight shoulders, the short, clipped sentences, the refusal to look at any of them. Sokka hasn’t seen him like this since the desert or that time with General Fong or even all the way back to the Southern Air Temple. It was easy to forget how scary Aang could be when he was angry, even without the Avatar State.
“You should try and stay as much in the clouds as possible, that should give us some cover. Also don’t fly in a straight line, those airships can’t move very fast or maneuver that well-” Zuko offered, obviously trying placate Aang before he was interrupted.
“Why didn’t you ask for help? We would have backed you up against Azula,” Aang asked.
“I could take her,” Zuko retorted and Sokka raised an eyebrow at that, pointedly not saying anything but screaming with his body language his thoughts on the matter.
“But you don’t have to it alone, not when we’re here,” Aang stressed but Zuko just scoffed and looked out into the open sky. “Look, I don’t want to see the temple being destroyed but what if you had died Zuko, then where would we be?”
“You’ve got the firebending basics down pretty good and you’re disciplined enough from the other elements to build from there,” Zuko shrugged. “I taught you enough to get through the rest of the war, you could find a proper master afterwards.” Sokka stared at Zuko, everyone was staring at Zuko, even Momo had stopped rummaging through the bags to look at the Fire Prince. How-how do you even respond to that? How do you counter such a terrible scenario that Zuko had very clearly given thought to? Even Katara looked a little sick.
“Do you know what I think Zuko?” Aang asked steadily after an awkward, silent few minutes of flying, “I think you’re being selfish.”
“What?” Zuko snarled but at least he looked a little livelier.
“I think you’ve made mistakes in your life, mistakes that haunt you and you’re scared you won’t be able to overcome them. So instead you throw yourself into dangerous situations not caring if you survive thinking that an honorable death will somehow redeem you.” Aang continued, not giving the firebender an inch as he tore into his soul. And it made a disturbing amount of sense, between his Angry Ponytail phase and his choice in Ba Sing Se and, spirits Sokka was such an idiot, his old girlfriend risking everything to save them just a few days ago, Zuko had to be drowning in guilt. “100 years and Firebenders are just as crazy. why can’t you see that dying won’t do anything but hurt the people around you.”
“You don’t know anything,” Zuko snapped, pushing himself further against the back of the saddle, away from them and Aang’s hard hitting words.
“While I was in the that iceberg, the Fire Nation took everything from me. My people, my entire culture was eradicated leaving nothing but bones and ruins,” Aang said softly but with a heavy weight to it. “I woke up to a world where I had no one, I was forced to rebuild my family from nothing.”
Aang turned around again, his eyes were still steely but they were wet with unshed tears and almost pleading. “If you let yourself die then you’d be fulfilling the Fire Lord’s will to destroy my people. I’ve already lost so much Zuko, please don’t take any more of my family away from me.”
Of course, Sokka should have realized: the desert, General Fong, the Southern Air Temple, all times when Aang let himself get angry was when someone he loved was hurt. And sure he, Katara and Aang were a family, Toph had kind of forced her way in and Suki was still new but Zuko had felt like an outsider from the moment he’d shown up at the Western Air Temple. Except to Aang who’d welcomed Zuko almost from the start. Count on the Avatar to cut through all surface problems and bring the four nations together; maybe he really could save the world in a way that really counted.
Toph was the first to move, crawling over from her spot near the front towards the back, flopping a bit aways from Zuko but close enough to reach out to (or punch) if desired. Suki cuddled closer to his side while Sokka stretched out his other arm along the saddle’s railing, his fingertips brushing the sleeves of Zuko’s shirt. Zuko himself looked ruffled and confused, as if it was a new experience for people to care about him and not want him to die. At rate things were going, Aang wouldn’t need to fight the Fire Lord because Sokka was going to challenge the whole royal family for their treatment of Zuko before he came into their care.
He’d learned long ago that families are weird and very hard. They stressed you out, make you laugh, made you cry; you showed them all your vulnerable bits and you trusted in them not to hurt you with it. But families, real families, will always be there to lift you up when you’re down, to catch you when you fall. Flying away from yet another attack, Sokka can’t help but fell that, for the first time in a while, Team Avatar felt like home again.
