"Thank you, I really hate it" for Zutara?
"Your crown, Fire Lord Zuko," Katara announced with a flourish as she stepped back after carefully fastening the fire crown into Zuko's hair, letting him see the final effect in the mirror.
"Thank you," Zuko said dryly after examining the headpiece. "I hate it."
Katara giggled, shaking her head and swatting at his arm.
"You only have to wear it for the length of the meeting with the senators," she reminded him. "And I promise I'll help you take it off later."
Zuko met her gaze in the mirror, heat in his gold eyes.
"Just the crown?" he teased, smirking.
Katara pressed her lips together, trying to stifle her smile and failing miserably.
"I could also be persuaded to help you out of your royal robes," she offered imperiously, and she squealed when Zuko lunged for her, intent on helping her out of her own royal robe before they could bother about the senator meeting.
"Zuko!" Katara gasped when he caught her with ease, reeling her in until he had her caged in his arms and could kiss her soundly.
"Katara," he teased in the same voice before claiming her lips for a searing kiss.
"We're going to be late," Katara managed to get out between breathless kisses.
"Mmm," Zuko hummed in agreement, his tongue sweeping into her mouth and claiming it all over again. "I'm the Fire Lord. A Fire Lord is never late. Everyone else is simply early."
"So arrogant," Katara chided before he kissed her breathless all over again, his hands sliding up the backs of her thighs and taking her royal dress with them.
They were definitely late to the meeting. Again.

THE PROPOSAL (REVERSED)
Azula isn't dumb. She swears she isn't. She literally conquered Ba Sing Se without a single casualty and with only three people. She's the greatest mastermind in the whole world and she knows how to manipulate people like she knows the back of her own hand.
So, she really should've seen this coming from miles away when she had the chance, right? RIGHT?????
Right . . .
She fucking did NOT!
...
[Three months ago]
"I- uhm . . . It looks really . . . sharp? Yeah, sharp. Thank you?"
Katara blinked, her face slightly loosing its glow as Azula said that. "You don't like it?"
Azula ran her eyes over the blue stone, neatly carved and linked to a blue ribbon, a truly marvellous speciman for a betrothal necklace. She knew of its culture from the Water Tribe, of course, but didn't really get around to the specifics of it.
But, what she didn't understand was, why was Katara of all people, giving her a betrothal neclace?!
Then she looked at Katara's neck. It's almost impossible to imagine the girl without her iconic necklace that was given to her by her . . . who was it now, mother? Yeah, she specifically remembered the conversation she had with the waterbender like an year ago, or something. Why she rememebered it? She had no clue.
The necklace lay on her lithe neck almost like it was a part of the girl's skin itself. Well, Azula thought, if mothers can give their betrothal necklaces to their daughters, then maybe, the whole betrothal necklace thing doesn't just have a singular purpose, right?
The girl had told Azula how her friends thought she was too motherly or something. So, when Azula had opened up about how her own mother thought she was a monster and never loved her, the girl had comforted her saying that Azula never has to worry about not having a mother anymore cuz she herself was going to take care of her.
And taking care of Azula, she did spectacularly. She never left Azula's side even for a minute, annoyingly so, and always sided with her whenever a Royal General Meeting was afoot. Sometimes, she even held Azula's arm while they walked through the Royal Gardens, much to Azula's irritation.
So, yeah . . . Maybe, the waterbender gave it to her because . . . she thought of herself as Azula's . . . mother? No, wait that's a weird thought and Azula shouldn't be having it while she's thinking of slamming the girl to the nearest wall and going to town at the very neck she's looking at.
Azula shook herself away from her thoughts. Whether she wanted to admit it or not, the waterbender had been growing on her for the past 3 years, and Azula trusted her with her life. She will never admit it, though. It'll make her look like a fool.
"No, I like it." Azula said, as she placed the necklace on her own neck, tying it into place. "We have a matching set."
Katara looked down at her own necklace. "Oh, yeah." She said, and clutched a strand of her, shifting her weight from her toes to heel.
Azula had been around the girl for enough to notice that that was a nervous tick. Don't as ask her why. She just liked to study people. That's all. She's a people person. She definitely did not pay attention to the waterbender whenever she had the chance to.
Azula looked all around the Royal Garden awkwardly, trying so hard to diffuse the tension. Like, why was it even so tense in the first place?!
"I'm really glad you accepted it." Katara said slowly, looking at Azula with her chin down. "I was really nervous about it and then Sokka hit me on the head really hard saying that-"
"Wait-" Azula interrupted her. "Why wouldn't I accept it?"
Well, sealing friendships in the way of gifts wasn't new to Azula. Firelord Sozin sealed his friendship with Avatar Roku with a gift, right?
Katara blinked. And then her lips spread out in that shy little smile that Azula will never admit as her favourite. "I thought you wouldn't want to." Katara explained. "Aang thought that too. But Zuko and Sokka said I was being an idiot and I should've given this to you sooner."
Azula frowned. Why would Katara consult with Azula's wimp brother and his idiot boyfriend over a simple gift? It's not really that big of a deal, right?
"Okay, rule number one," Azula said, hoping to get the weirdness out of her head, "Never listen to anything our stupid brothers say, yeah? One moment you're all knowledgable and then the next moment you talk to them and lose your brain to the dark spirits."
Katara laughed. A really pretty sound. But Azula had no idea why she was laughing. She didn't even make a joke, for Agni's sake!
But, she was doing something right?
...
[One month ago]
Katara's visit to Azula's chambers had been frequent ever since she'd given her the necklace. Azula had been complaining (but not really) about how she needs to respect the Fire princess's boundaries and personal space.
But, Katara, had just barged in through her door, plopping down right next to her on the bed. If she'd been any closer, she would've landed right on Azula's lap and the princess would've exploded from the sheer pressure of proximity.
"Hi." Katara beamed, her blue eyes sparkling.
"Don't you have any other person you'd like to torture with your presence?" Azula rolled her eyes, trying to put some distance between them but failing miserably.
"No." Katara slid in closer, making Azula's heart rate skyrocket. "Not when you're right here."
Azula gave her a look, that conveyed pure annoyance. And yet, the waterbender only grinned wider.
"You're annoying." Azula stated.
"I know."
"But today it's tenfold."
"Not without reason."
Azula looked at her with a slight raise of her brow.
Katara seemed to read her like a book as she opened her mouth to explain. "I went down to the printer with Aang, and guess what?"
Azula rolled her eyes. "No."
Katara squealed and pulled out a scroll and unrolled it. "The invitation! It's ready!"
Azula looked at the neatly painted design of the invite held in Katara's delicate hand. But she was more enraptured by the hand that was holding it rather than the invite itself. She traced the smooth, brown fingers with her eyes, moving up along the arm and to Katara's neck where her necklace hung. She gulped, thinking of the time when Katara gave her a necklace and the thoughts of the very neck that had plagued her brain after it had happened. Her eyes then landed on Katara's lips and they looked so soft, so full, that Azula wanted nothing more than to know what they tasted like.
When she lifted her eyes up, her heart stopped when she found Katara was looking directly at her. Her blue eyes shined of something that Azula couldn't quite pin-point. It was like the vast expanse of the entire ocean had come crashing down on Azula and she was drowning. Fast.
Azula's hand found a mind of it's own, placing itself on Katara's thigh in a feather light touch, feeling the roughness of her fabric all the way up to her hips where her body curved.
She let out a rough breath, her mind not really catching up with her mouth as she asked, "When?"
She wasn't really sure what she meant by asking the waterbender that question, but she had strong suspicions that it had nothing to do with the invitation the girl was holding and rather had everything to do with the girl herself.
Katara, seemed to be stuck in the same daze as her, her eyes glossing over when it landed on Azula's lips and meeting her gaze again. "Soon." She panted out.
Azula's foggy brain couldn't really register what they were talking about, but before she even had the time to ask, Katara stood up from the bed and rushed out of the room, her face glowing red.
Only then, air seemed to fill Azula's lungs. She shook her head, trying to make sense of what just happened. But then her eyes fell on the scroll splayed on the bed, and she recognised the shape of Katara's and her own name written on it.
She wanted us to go as dates to this wedding? That was what she was excited about?!
Azula groaned as she fell back on her bed.
...
[Present day]
Azula feels rough hands pulling her aside.
When she stepped inside the wedding hall, she did not expect it to be this . . . lavish. And she certainly wasn't prepared to get man-handled by-
"Sokka?!" Azula exclaims. "Get your filthy hands off me, peasant!" But when she saw panic filling his eyes, her demeanor became more serious.
"Why aren't you dressed up?!" He whisper-yells so that no one could hear it except them.
"What do you mean?" Azula looks confused. "I'm the Fire princess. I'm always dressed up!"
"No, you idiot!" And Azula would've smacked him right there if he didn't sound so worried. "Why aren't you- . . . Okay, you know what? Come with me."
He pulls her outside to the way leading to their respective chambers.
...
Azula feels good about her appearance. She really does. Whether she'd like to admit it or not, but Sokka did a wonderful job picking out her outfit and appearance. But what she doesn't feel good about is how her brother Zuko, is making her hold his arm while walking her down the aisle that is meant for the people getting married and their best, closest people.
She looks all around, extemely confused.
What in the name of Agni is going on?!
She doesn't really get it. Is this a sick joke that they're all trying to play on her?!
But that Admiral from a Fire Nation Colony wouldn't be sitting over there, picking his ear if it was really a joke, right?
"It's a big day, Azula." Zuko whispers beside her. "You can at least try to smile, right?"
She opens her mouth to respond. To ask him what the heck is going on. But before she could open her mouth, Zuko steps her up to the stage, and silently relieves himself to the sidelines.
She blinks, trying so hard to wake up from this stupid dream. She came here as Katara's date, right? Then why is her brother making her get on stage?! Why are all the people she knew her whole life and and a bunch of other people who are majorly from the Water Tribes are occupying the hall right now?!
And where the hell is Katara?!
Azula thinks hard. Really hard. But she really can't put a finger on it. Something's strange and it feels like she's the only person in the room who doesn't get it. Standing up here on stage, next to Sokka's big grin, and a bunch of other 'important' people looking up at her from their seats below the stage, wasn't really the place where she thought she'd realise she's dumb.
Maybe she was going crazy, after all.
She turns to Aang sharing the stage with her, who's wearing his traditional monk clothing he wore for her brother's coronation. When his eyes fall on her, he gives her an encouraging smile.
Suddenly, a traditional Water Tribe flute begins to play a tune and everyone in the hall stands up.
Azula recognises the tune. It's the wedding tune played for when the bride enters the wedding hall. Then she suddenly realises that the same tune was playing when she entered the hall too with Zuko holding her hand.
Wait-
She's the bride?! How and why is she the bride?! And why is the tune playing again if she had already entered the hall?! There are TWO brides?!
Suddenly, all heads turn to the entrance of the hall and Azula whips her head around too; to see what the hell it's all about.
The moment her eyes land on the entrance, her jaw practically hangs. Walking in, wearing a blue, flowing, elegant dress Azula's ever seen on a human, is Katara. Her hair's in a bun, her iconic hair-loopies hanging loose to frame her face. And somehow, the prettiest thing she's wearing is the smile on her face.
Her hand is tucked inside her father's arm, who's wearing the traditional Water Tribe Chief's attire, walking the waterbender down the aisle. She's holding a bouquet of fire lilies in her hand and they contrast pleasantly with her blue dress.
When they finally reach the stage, Katara steps up while her father moves to the sidelines to stand beside Zuko.
And that's when Katara's eyes fall on her.
And just like that, Azula's head falls into a spiral, realisation hitting her like a battering ram.
The necklace . . . The invitation . . . The wedding-
OH LORD AGNI, SHE'S GETTING MARRIED TO KATARA!!!!
Panic grips her heart.
RIGHT?????
Right . . .
She fucking did NOT!!
Katara looks at her with a furrowed brow. "Hey . . . Are you okay?"
"WE'RE GETTING MARRIED?!?!"
The entire rooms falls silent.
Katara looks taken aback by the question. "What-?!"
"WHY DIDN'T ANYONE TELL ME?!?!"
Katara's frown deepens. "Azula, what are you talking about?! Of course you knew!"
"No, I didn't!!"
"What?!"
"I didn't realise it until now! You've all been lying to me?!"
Katara gets a bit closer to her, in a attempt to calm her down. "No one was lying to you, Azula, what are you talking about?!"
"I thought you invited me to this wedding as your date! You didn't tell me that WE are the ones getting married!!"
The waterbender's eyes are wide, taking a moment to grasp the information. "What do you mean?! I literally gave you a betrothal necklace and showed you our wedding invitations!!"
Azula blinks. "I thought the betrothal necklace was a gift of friendship. I didn't know you were actually asking me to marry you!!"
"Don't be riddiculous, Azula. Stop it. This isn't funny!"
Azula shakes her head. "No, it really isn't funny. I swear until like twenty minutes ago, I was standing way over there waiting for you to be my date for the wedding. Sokka literally had to dress me up again!!"
Katara gasps, her eyes getting glossy. Silence hangs heavily in the hall, the people looking at the both of them like a volleyball court.
The waterbender takes a moment to speak. "So . . . So you . . . You really didn't know?"
"I did not."
A single tear falls from Katara's eye and Azula's heart shatters. "Y- You don't . . . You don't want to marry me?" Katara's voice is feeble, at the verge of breaking down.
Azula closes her mouth, pulling her head back, stunned. She looks around the hall, to see shocked faces, looking at the stage with wide eyes.
The gravity of the situation decends on Azula. She singlehandedly is ruining the most extravagant wedding she's ever witnessed. And the irony is that it's her wedding. She's wanted nothing more than to call Katara her own, but this truly is shocking to anyone who doesn't even realise that they're getting married! Like, seriously. Why didn't people make it more clear to her?!
Seeing Azula's lack of reply, Katara does break down. She lets out a loud sob, before stepping down the stage quickly to walk away.
"Katara, wait!" Azula exclaims. The princess's nerves finally, FINALLY do their goddamn job and jolts her muscles awake, and as quick as her own lightning, she steps down the stage behind Katara and grabs her wrist from behind. The waterbender lets out a gasp, being pulled to a sudden stop.
Azula flips the girl around, pulling her close. Katara's eyes are filled to the brim with tears, leaking out now and then and Azula can't help but wipe them away.
"You're annoying." The princess says softly. "You're stubborn and irritating and you stick to my side like an elbow leech. You're a pain in my ass and I've been wanting to make you my wife ever since, just to pay you back on how much you annoy me."
Katara's lips fall open, her eyes wide and attentive.
"So, stop crying those pathetic little tears and come marry me." Azula says as she wipes another steak of tear falling down the waterbender's cheek. "Come on."
Azula pulls Katara's wrist back to the stage, and the whole hall erupts in cheers. Aang reads the vows and much to Azula's delight, Katara's tears stop.
But she still isn't 100% herself, and Azula notices it. When Aang asks them both whether they would care for each other in sickness and in health, and take each other as wives, Katara only replies with a feeble "I do" and falls silent again.
"I do." Azula says with a smile, but it falters when Katara doesn't smile back.
...
Azula enters Katara's chambers that night, noticing at once that it was decorated completely with rose petals and fire lilies. A pleasant smell hits her nose and candle lamps light up the entire room with an incandescent glow.
She steps inside, closes and locks the door behind her. When she turns around, her eyes fall on a small frame, sitting on the bed hugging her knees with her head tucked in between them.
Katara.
Azula takes determined steps forward. She reaches her wife in no time and sits beside her cautiously. She's pretty sure Katara's aware of her presence but the waterbender doesn't really respond to it. Azula blinks, her head racing with a million thoughts.
"Hey . . ." Azula says softly. "Look at me . . ."
"Go away." Katara's muffled voice demands, and to Azula, it sounds like she's been crying again.
"I will not." Azula says firmly. "Not unless you look at me."
A beat passes, before Katara sniffles and lifts her head up. Azula's gut bottoms out as she takes a look at her wife's face. It's puffy and red from all the crying and the princess had to admit that she looked kinda cute.
"Leave me alone!" Katara says before letting her head fall again.
"Nuh-uh." Azula disagrees before moving closer and wrapping her fingers around Katara's wrists to pry them open. "We're going to-"
As soon as Azula touches her, Katara bursts. "Leave me alone! Leave me alone! Leave me alone! Leave me alone!"
The waterbender pulls her hand away from Azula's grip and starts hitting her, landing blows blindly, anywhere she can find, all the while screaming, "Leave me alone!"
"Ow, ow, ow, ow, OW! Stop it, Katara, STOP IT!!"
But Katara doesn't stop. "How dare you do that to me?! How dare you scare me like that?!"
Azula lets out a laugh.
"Don't laugh, you idiot!" Katara hits her shoulders, then arms, then legs, and Azula braces herself from the blows, laughing non-stop. "I thought I made a terrible mistake! Like I was forcing myself on you! I hated myself for it!! How dare you scare me like that?!"
Azula finds a gap between blows and wraps her arms around Katara's hips, pulling her forward to her body and holding her close. Katara struggles to get out of her grip, to land some more blows, but Azula's stronger.
"Well . . . you guys are pretty shit at informing people about their own wedding!!" Azula guffaws, placing her hand on Katara's head and pulling it close to her shoulder.
Unable to hit Azula anymore due to the proximity, Katara gives up, clutching onto the firebender's collars desperately. "And you are pretty shit at marrying me!" She shrieks, moving closer to Azula and burying her face in her neck. "I will absolutely murder you, if you do something like that again!"
Azula could do nothing but chuckle. "If only it were true."
Katara looks up at her instantly, pulling Azula forward by her collar. "I mean it, princess! Don't you ever think about doing that to me ever again. And if you leave me for somebody else, I will personally track you down and kill the bitch who stole you from me. Understood?"
Azula smirks, getting lost in Katara's stare. "Yes ma'am."
"Okay. Good." Katara says, before slowly letting her lips curve into that shy smile that always took Azula's breath away.
"You're mood swings are worse than falling from an airship."
Katara giggles before hitting Azula's chest playfully. "Shut up!"
Azula gasps. "You can't tell me what to do!"
"Actually, I can. I'm your wife now, remember?" The waterbender lifts a single eyebrow, a smirk on her face.
"Well, in that case-" Azula says before pushing Katara flat on her back on the bed. "-I believe we have some wife businesses to attend to."
Katara gasps. "Like what?" She whispers.
"For starters-" The princess dips her head down place a feather soft kiss on Katara's neck, finally getting to experience a fantasy that's been hogging her brain forever.
"Azulaaaaaa" Katara whines, low and deep, not really wanting her mood to shift.
Azula stares at her wife. Her annoying, defiant, resilient, stubborn, head-strong, spirited, sophisticated, and beautiful wife.
If she's dumb, then she's the luckiest dumb person on the planet.

Little drabble for the Avatar au I'm writing
Katara squirms on the ship, the events of the air temple still fresh in her mind. The crew all avoid her but at least Zuko and Iroh attempt to be civil, even if disappointment is evident in their eyes. Toph scoffs at her when they cross paths and Ty-Lee glares daggers at her whenever she walks by, standing in front of Aang as if to protect him from Katara. Even Sokka is ignoring her and every time he does, she remembers how hurt he was when she yelled at him.
It's then that a terrible realization hits her: she's standing on a ship where everyone, including the Fire Nation soldiers, members of Fire Nation royalty, the Avatar himself, and even her brother- all of them think that she's the monster

Hidden Kisses
A soft snort escaped from Zuko as he watched Sokka's overdramatic attempts to sneak them away from the rest of the gang. This had been the second time that day that Sokka had tried to do so, just as much enthusiasm lacing his actions as his head snapped to face Zuko, a finger held in front of his mouth to try and silence Zuko.
The small smile that had been making its way onto Zuko's face only grew more at the action, a laugh threatening to spill from his lips even as he tried to stifle the noise.
Sokka's eyes widened as he witnessed the action, hearing soft exhales of air as he tried to silently laugh. Not willing to have their cover blown so quickly, Sokka wrapped a hand around Zuko's waist and tugged him in, pulling the shorter boy in so their bodies were flush against one another.
Though that action itself sent Zuko's jaw clamping shut, confusion lacing his features at the sudden positioning, Sokka still very quickly dipped down to lay a kiss upon his lips, silencing him for the few moments they stayed locked together. Pulling back, Zuko was left stumbling after Sokka in bewilderment.

ZUKO ✰ 5:36
NOTE. Implied that reader and Zuko are engaged, and reader is a woman in this one!
“Relax,” you whispered, nudging his side. “You’re clenching your jaw.”
“I’m not,” he muttered, though he immediately loosened it. “People are staring.”
“They’re always staring,” you said breezily. “But right now they’re more interested in the fresh chili sesame buns over there, I promise.”
Zuko glanced over and saw a baker pulling golden, round buns from a clay oven, steam curling in the last golden slants of sunlight. His stomach made a small, treacherous sound.
You grinned. “Hungry?”
“I’m fine,” he said.
“You’re lying.”
“I’m managing,” he corrected.
You were already pulling him toward the stall, the ring on your finger cool against his arm. The sensation sends a small flutter to his chest, like a butterfly occupying the space without rent. “You’re getting a bun.”
He opened his mouth to protest, but you had already waved at the vendor. “Hi, Auntie Yin! Two sesame buns, please—and an extra one with chili if they’re still warm?”
The older woman squinted, then lit up with recognition. “[Name], you’re back! And you brought your prince again.”
Auntie Yin's husband cleared his throat. “Isn’t it Firelord, technically—”
“Pfft,” Auntie Mei waved him off with a flour-dusted hand. “Not when you’re standing in my bread line, young man.”
You laughed, leaning into Zuko as you accepted the little bundle of warm bread. “You see why I come back here?”
Just as he was about to hand in some coins, you had stopped his hand mid-way. He looked at you with a small pout, definitely confused.
“Zuko, no.”
“But—“
“We’re going to fight over this, so no.”
“I don’t like arguing with you,” he murmurs.
You pat his hand solemnly. “I know,” you say. “So I’m paying. End of story.”
He didn’t answer anything else until you raised the bun for him to take the first bite. It was crisp on the outside, soft and buttery in the middle, with little black sesame seeds clinging to his lips, the spice just right to not overpower the actual buttery taste. He closed his eyes briefly.
“I remember this,” he said. “I used to sneak out with my uncle, and we’d get these. He used to say—” His voice caught slightly, swallowing with a pleased nod. “—he used to say the best food in the Fire Nation was always on the street, never behind palace walls.”
Your smile softened.
“He was right.”
You wandered deeper into the market, weaving between stalls draped with silks, lanterns, and every kind of fried thing imaginable. People bumped into each other without apology, children shouted as they chased each other with little wooden dragons, and somewhere nearby, a flute player added a gentle melody to the thick scent of roasted peanuts and smoke.
Zuko tilted his head slightly. “You know all of them.”
You shrugged. “Grew up here. Before my family moved to the coast, we lived two blocks down.”
“Wait, really?”
“Mhm. That stall with the yellow lanterns? That used to be where I bought pickled plums on my way home from school. And that guy—” you pointed to a tall man flipping meat over a roaring fire—“used to give me extra sticks if I said please and didn’t rat him out to his wife for snacking while he cooked. Kind guy, really. Just had a habit of snacking, not that I can blame him because they're really good.”
Zuko looked at you with something like awe. “You never told me any of this.”
“I like keeping some mystery,” you teased, passing him a skewer of fire-grilled mushrooms glistening with glaze. “Try this one. You used to like mushrooms, right?”
“I still like mushrooms.”
“Then don’t make that face and eat it.”
He bit into it, reluctantly. The glaze was spicy, sweet, and smoky all at once. He blinked. “Okay, fine. That’s—really good.”
“Told you.”
You two kept walking, you pausing every so often to wave or chat or haggle for something small—an herbal tea, a dumpling wrapped in banana leaf, or dried fruit you tucked into the folds of your sleeve for later. Zuko stayed mostly quiet, watching you, feeling the tension in his chest unwind inch by inch. Your laugh was infectious, the kind that made other people smile without realizing it. More than once, he found himself smiling too, caught off guard by the sound.
At one point, you dragged him over to a table surrounded by children and old men playing tile games.
“[Name], my girl!” one of them called, holding up a tile. “Still cheating at dragon tiles?”
“Only when you let me win,” you said with a wink.
Zuko stood beside you, bemused. “You’ve played dragon tile in public?”
“She won in public,” one of the elders cackled. “Took my whole snack allowance for the week.”
You handed over a few coins with a mock-guilty face. “Here, I owe you for that.”
“Isn’t there a law that states it’s illegal to play mahjong in public?”
...
"I don't know, is there?"
Before he could dwell on the thought for too long, you had already been ushering Zuko to the next stop. “You’ve been in more street fights than I have.”
“You’d be surprised what people will bet when they think a girl in ribbons doesn’t know what she’s doing.”
“I think I married a con artist.”
You gave him a pleased smile. “Took you this long to figure that out?”
You rounded a quieter corner of the market as the last of the sun dipped behind the rooftops. Lanterns glowed in the gathering dusk, and music trickled through the air. You led him to a little bench tucked between two carts, one selling sticky rice and the other spiced nuts. You flopped down with a sigh, tugging him beside you.
For a while, you two just sat.
Zuko leaned back, watching the lanterns sway in the breeze.
“This was… good.”
You bumped your shoulder against his. “You don’t always have to be Firelord, you know.”
“I kind of do,” he said, but it was quiet.
“You kind of don’t. Not with me, at least.”
He turned to look at you. “I don’t think I ever realized how much I missed this kind of quiet.”
You hummed. “That’s what I’m here for. To remind you.”
Zuko hesitated for a moment, then rested his hand on yours, lacing your fingers together, his finger idly playing with the ring on yours. It's nice, he thinks, just being with you like this. The market was bustling around you, but for a moment, it all faded—just a man and his beloved, full of street food and soft lantern light, sharing a bench and a memory and the kind of peace he was still learning to let himself have.

This is the perfect balance of self-doubt and love for Zuko that this scene needs!
hi!! for roe, can i request a part two to the commander reader one?? maybe written with the events that happen when zuko asks if he can join the group (and when katara splashes him with her water bending, the reader deflects it)? the rest is up to you. thanks!! 🥺♥️
i love when yall request part 2s deadass
part 1
Being in the Fire Nation again made your skin crawl. It really was awful. You kept thinking that every voice behind every mask of every soldier was going to be an old friend from the academy. It kept you paranoid, and distracted, which was really the worst thing you could be on the Day of Black Sun.
Sadly, even a military strategist like you couldn’t have predicted what happened that day. You didn’t really want to make Sokka feel worse, so you couldn’t say much about it, but you were angry you’d wasted the day, the eclipse.
And running into Azula had made your skin crawl.
She greeted you like an old friend- you were. And in her discussion of how she’d known of the invasion, she let slip that one little detail, the one that had made your heart stop cold.
She said that Zuko was ‘gone’.
You knew that Azula lies, its all she’d ever done. And yet, you couldn’t help but wonder- he was a banished prince, one who’d let you get away even though you were in league with the avatar. He, as Katara had put it a month earlier, could’ve pieced it together than Aang was alive. You knew how deeply punishment ran in the Fire Nation, you’d seen it first hand.
Zuko had failed to kill the Avatar in Ba Sing Se. Could his father have killed him for it?
You loved him deeply, even to this day. He’d never hurt you, so though you listened and understood when Aang and Katara and Sokka talked horribly of him, you’d never agree. You saw a glimmer of hope in him, when he let you go in the earth kingdom, and for just one moment in Ba Sing Se. You’d always harbored hope that he would one day return to your side, and help the avatar, but-
He couldn’t do that if his father had killed him.
“Gone”.
She was done speaking to you by the time the fighting started, and although you protected your friends, your mind wasn’t up to the task of focusing enough to win the battle. You cursed yourself for it- you were Fire Nation too, you knew what she was doing, damn it. You knew that she was a liar by nature, but you couldn’t help but worry, be terrified.
The eclipse ended. The day ended. You had to go, and leave so many of your fellow soldiers behind. You wished you could save them all- but you knew what had to be done.
You were the only firebender Aang knew. You had to train him. The problem was- you never learned much more firebending than the basics that Iroh had taught Zuko in the winter. Sure, you knew them by heart, and they served you well, and sure you’d figured out some moves of your own in facing down firebenders all spring and summer, but you couldn’t help but feel inadequate for training the avatar.
You gave him what you could. You hoped it was enough.
You didn’t quite grieve for Zuko, because you told yourself that Azula must have been lying, just like she was about Suki. She had to be. Zuko wouldn’t go down that easily, even to his father. Iroh wouldn’t have let it happen. You had to believe that Azula was saying it just to get in your head.
She’d succeeded in distracting you during that one battle, on that one day. You wouldn’t let her do it again.
Lucky for you, it wasn’t long before she was proven wrong.
Sometimes, thoughts come at you all at once. You have a thousand different reactions and in the moment, you have to chose one. Sometimes, though, your reaction is instant, but follows down a train of thought that happens in hardly the blink of an eye, when you think so fast that it transcends words.
This was what happened when you saw Zuko. You were filled with relief, and you wanted to hug him, your old friend, who you were so sure was dead, even though you tried to convince yourself otherwise. You were about to take a step forward when you realized it would make you look like a traitor to your friends, and so from behind Katara you said “forgive me” before rushing forward, and hugging him, exactly like you’d wanted, with a breath of his name.
But the euphoria of seeing him alive faded while you remembered what he was likely here for. He was the enemy of Aang. So you let go, and walked backwards to your friends again, standing at Aang’s side, where you knew you’d make your allegiance clear. You hoped that they would understand why you’d needed to hug him.
“I heard you guys flying around down there, so I just thought I’d. Wait for you. Here.” Zuko was as awkward as you’d ever seen him in your life, back when he was a bumbling preteen. It almost made you smile, but you couldn’t, quite. Appa’s roar had always made you flinch, but as much as you expected to see the prince eaten then and there, Appa instead licked him, and you caught the way that it affected Aang. Why did the bison trust him?
“I know you must be surprised to see me here,” Zuko said, and you narrowed your eyes, as surprised as he expected. Sure, he was alive, and you were happy about that. But why now? He hadn’t been chasing the avatar for months, even before Ba Sing Se. Why did he come now?
“Not really, since you’ve followed us all over the world,” Sokka said, and you could feel the combat rising in your friends beside you. They didn’t get it. Zuko wasn’t the most strategic person in the world, but he was smart. If he was here to fight them, he wouldn’t have come alone. He wouldn’t have come without armor on.
“Right, well, uhh...” He was so awkward, it was almost painful. How was this the same prince that you’d known just a few months ago? “Anyway, what I wanted to tell you about is that I’ve changed. And I, uh, I’m good now. And, well, I think I should join your group. Oh, and I can help teach firebending, since I know Y/N doesn’t know some of the higher stuff. See, I, uh-” You shared a glance with Aang, briefly. You were surprised by practically everything he was saying- he’d had a change of heart? He wanted to help the avatar?
He remembered that much about you?
“You want to what now?” Toph said, being cutoff only a moment later by Katara.
“You can’t possibly think that any of us would trust you, can you? I mean, how stupid do you think we are?”
“Well, you trust Y/N, and they’re from the Fire Nation, like me, so-” Zuko’s words almost insulted you. You cared for Zuko, but you and he were not the same.
“Y/N helped us from the first moment we met,” Sokka said, coming to your aid, and you looked at him briefly, almost touched he’d had such a quick response. “All you’ve ever done is try to hunt us down and capture Aang.”
“I’ve done some good things!” Zuko responded, taking a small step forward. “I let you go in that storm! I let Y/N go when I was supposed to take them prisoner! I mean, I could’ve stolen your bison in Ba Sing Se, but I set him free! That’s something.” Appa seemed to try to prove his words with another lick.
“Appa does seem to like him,” Toph conceeded. It put just the flicker of doubt in your chest, that he might be telling the truth. You hoped he was- he hadn’t lied about any of the other examples.
“He probably just covered himself in honey or something so Appa would lick him,” Sokka said, and you glanced down at yourself.
“I didn’t feel any honey when I hugged him,” you said, which earned you a quick glare from Katara, and you decided to shut your mouth.
“Still,” Sokka said, waving a hand in front of him, “I’m not buying it.”
“I can understand why you wouldn’t trust me,” Zuko said, lowering his head, “and I know I’ve made some mistakes in the past.” For a moment, you wondered if you were gullible, or perhaps naïve, to almost believe him.
“Like when you attacked our village?”
“Or when you stole my mother’s necklace and used it to track us down and capture us?”
Yeah, maybe you were.
“Look, I admit I’ve done some awful things. I was wrong to try to capture you, and I’m sorry I attacked the water tribe. And I never should’ve sent that Fire Nation assassin after you. I’m gonna try to stop him-”
“Wait, you sent Combustion Man after us?”
You were definitely naive. He sent an assassin after you- you couldn’t let yourself trust him again.
“Well, that’s not his name, but-” Oh, Zuko, why would you doom yourself like that?
“Oh, sorry,” Sokka said, boomerang held with blade toward Zuko, “I didn’t mean to insult your friend.”
“He’s not my friend!”
“That guy locked me and Katara in jail and tried to blow us all up!” Zuko took the blows and lowered his head, but then slid his gaze to Aang.
“Why aren’t you saying anything?” He asked, his voice calmer now, “You once said you thought we could be friends. You know I have good in me.” After Aang didn’t respond, he looked to you.
“Y/N? Please.” For a moment, you met his eye, but after a slow heartbeat you looked away, condemning him to whatever decision Aang would reach.
“There’s no way we can trust you after all you’ve done,” Aang said, his voice strong, with no hint of hesitation, “we’ll never let you join us.”
“You need to get out of here,” Katara ordered him, “now.”
“I’m trying to explain that I’m not that person anymore!” he shouted, and you brought up your fists, as his body language clearly said otherwise.
“Either you leave, or we attack,” Sokka threatened, stopping Zuko in his tracks. His gaze fell to the ground.
“If you won’t accept me as a friend,” he said, lowering himself to his knees, “then maybe you’ll take me as a prisoner.”
“No, we won’t!” Katara snarled, stepping forward and throwing him back with a powerful wave. You knew that she wouldn’t throw him over the edge, but your heart pounded in worry all the same. “You need to get out of here, and don’t come back. And if we ever see you again- well, we’d better not see you again!” You looked away, as he stood, and walked away. You couldn’t bear to look at him.
The boy you saw in front of you, the boy that left the Western Air Temple- he was everything that you’d always wanted to see in Zuko. He was the best parts of the boy you’d once known. He was trying to make things right, and accepting the consequences of his actions. You were proud of him. And it took every ounce of your strength not to go to him, and tell him so.
You held back your voice as Katara and Sokka raged against him. You knew that their trust in you was strong, but you were Fire Nation to them, even after all this time. You knew that the foundation of your friendship was strong, but to try to convince them of the good in Zuko would be battering rams taken to load-bearing pillars. You were a strategist- you knew to hold your tongue.
Toph, on the other hand, had no such qualms. She stormed out, and you avoided the wrath of the water tribe siblings.
But Zuko proved his allegiance, first by helping take down Combustion Man, then by reasoning with Aang using more gentleness than you’d ever seen him use, at least at one time. And once again, you kept quiet, knowing that you shouldn’t actively speak out in favor for the prince. Even when Aang asked for your permission, you skirted over your opinion.
“You’ve been hurt by him far more than I. If you’re okay, then I’m okay.”
But after he’d been accepted, after he’d been given his own room, after he and everyone else had settled in, you couldn’t stop yourself, couldn’t keep quiet anymore. You snuck through the hallways and into the room he’d been given, and knocked on the wall beside the archway of his door. Hopefully it would get his attention before alerting the others.
He looked up from his bags to you, and for once in his life had foresight enough to keep his voice down.
“Y/N?” He said, and you rushed through the door to hug him once again.
“Zuko,” you answered, laying your face in the crook of his neck. “I’m so happy to see you.” He hugged back, shocked by the gesture as he was.
“It’s good to see you too,” he answered, but yielded the conversation to you.
“I always knew you’d join us eventually. I knew it.” He didn’t answer, beyond resting his forehead down onto you.
He didn’t question how you knew more about his heart than he did.
He knew the answer.

WarTrophy!Sokka Snippit
i survived finals. it only cost me my healthy, sanity, and a few years of my life. as celebration, here'sanother semi-polished drabble from my old drafts!
fic in question | snippit 1 | snippit 2
-
Agni, Sokka cursed, I think that made me feel worse.
He hadn’t thought about that night in a long, long time. Was this what brooding did to a person? No wonder Zuko was so grumpy all the time. Sokka sighed. Moping was doing him any good - best leave that to melodramatic prince’s with bruised egos.
Sokka propped himself up with a groan, his chest aching terribly and begging for him to lie back down. Shit. He felt horrible. Almost as bad as he did after his trials.
‘How could you let them get away? We had them!’
Sokka snorted, even though it wasn't funny at all. Honestly, what was Zuko expecting? It was the avatar, master of all four elements, versus Sokka, master of nothing. Was he supposed to pull a bomb out of his ass or something?
Sokka pinched his nose bridge, resisting the urge to bury his face in a pillow and scream. Zuko was understandably upset. He had done the impossible, something everyone had laughed at him for and told him he’d fail at, only for the avatar to simply fly away. On a giant flying spirit-beast thing.
Could Sokka really blame him for getting mad?
‘How could you?! You’re - You’re no different than them. I - I should have known. You’re just a savage playing dress up.’
Sokka’s hand dropped onto his lap, cushioned by white sheets. It’s scarred and calloused skin stared back up at him. That…that was a little harder to reason away.
The people they fought, those were savages. Agni’s sake, they had bone spears! Bones! They lived in huts; they traveled on wooden boats - what about Sokka was savage other than his eyes? He may not be a Fire National, but everything he'd done over the past eight years should have made up for it!
Sokka served the royal family even when it went against his personal feelings, which wasn’t even something everyone on their crew could claim. Hell, he’d threatened to kill a kid in front of their mother for Zuko. Who in their right mind would see that and then say he was a traitor? A savage?
His gut grew hot - and he rubbed at his face to try and banish the growing flush, ignoring how it made his ribs twinge in protest.
In the strictest terms, Sokka didn’t really have any grounds to get mad at Zuko. Zuko was a prince, banishment or not, and Sokka was decidedly…not. If Zuko wanted to call him a savage until the day he died, he didn’t have the right to say no. It’s just that...Sokka knew deep, deep, deep, deep down, Zuko couldn't have meant it. His prince was a kind one, gentle and so conscious of everyone around him.
Fire spit, Zuko used to make him help sneak turtleducks into his room, wanting to raise them in secret only to give up because the idea of them being separated from their mother was too sad. Sokka sighed.
He forced himself to let go of any bitterness, letting the resentment in his stomach cool. His anger was misdirected (it was). Zuko wasn't the problem here - Ozai was. They wouldn't even be out here in the first place if it wasn't for him! Ursa, Lu Ten, Azulon - everything was Ozai's fault, and as if that wasn't enough, he was trying to ruin Zuko.
Zuko would still be that kind boy Sokka remembered from their childhood and Azula (probably ) wouldn't have turned out so crazy. Even now, oceans away and two years of silence, Ozai had still managed to hurt Zuko more.
That was the root of Sokka's anger. That once again, Zuko let his anger get the best of him, forcing him to embrace Ozai’s poison just a little bit more.
Sokka had held out hope that maybe the years at sea would dampen that connection, the openness maturing him in a way the palace could not, but it seemed he was wrong. Ozai's talons still cut in deep.
Sokka sighed, the sharp twist in his heart throbbing. It hurt him to see Zuko chase senselessly after Ozai’s approval, not when he knew the Fire Lord would never give it. Everything that would make Zuko a great man was everything Ozai hated. Zuko would have to either die or become like his father, before even a sliver of approval floated his way, and Sokka didn’t know which was worse.
Making up his mind, he began to get up. So what if Zuko blamed him? It was nothing, just a bump in the road. There was a lot on the line, and Sokka didn’t have time to get all twisted about some playground insults. Zuko needed Sokka now more than ever, and if he continued to doubt him, well that just meant Sokka needed to work harder to show his dedication.
Sokka rolled out of bed with a groan. He needed to see Zuko and…well, he’d probably have to apologize for that punch. Also, Sokka just wanted to see him. He was Sokka’s prince, but they were friends. And anyways, Zuko still cared about him (duh the guy had moved him to his room) and that was enough proof for him that this was all just water under the bridge.
With great effort, he got to his feet. Sucking in a couple breaths, he steeled himself. Agni, it hurt. By the time he made it to the door, he’d pull himself together. He wouldn’t be of any use to Zuko broken. Letting out a hiss, he limped out into the hallway. When he crossed the threshold, he straightened up and pushed the agony to the corner of his mind that he ignored. There, totally normal.
(he could make it about a day, tops, before needing like ten hours of beauty rest)
Sokka traversed through at least three hallways before he finally ran into someone.
“Sokka.” The voice was deep, heavy with the scratch that came from breathing out fire, proof of Agni’s blessing.
“Jogan.” Sokka said back just as enthusiastically, which was to say, not at all.
Jogan looked him up and down with an unkind, critical eye. “You shouldn’t be up.”
“Probably.” Sokka shrugged, then raised his eyebrow in half-feigned amusement. “Odd to hear it coming from you though. Didn’t know you cared.”
“I don’t.” The bigger man huffed, “but the prince has been hovering for days. It’d be disrespectful for you to waste his effort.”
Out of everyone on the crew, Sokka respected Jogan the most, despite the fact it was so obviously not returned. Jogan didn’t like him, but he was a loyalist so he obeyed Zuko. He was nothing like Ryuji, who ignored the prince in favor of his own disgust.
It was nice to see that there were still people out there who respected the weight of Zuko's status. As the banishment went on and on, Sokka had started to fear the Fire Lords’ propaganda would fully erase support for Zuko’s claim to the throne by the time they returned. At this rate though, they had at least ten years before Sokka really had to start worrying. No great, but it could be worse.
“I would never.” Sokka promised, and tapped his chest confidently, “In fact, thanks to the Prince’s attention, I’m at full health. Could fight off a giant flying buffalo.”
“Hmph.” Jogan grunted, but that criticizing gleam had dimmed. Sokka couldn’t help the exasperation. It felt odd knowing that a racist crewhand had more trust in his word than Zuko did.
Sokka looked around then, confusion brushing away his apprehension. “Where is everyone?”
It wasn’t that late in the day yet; there should still be some people milling about. Were they getting their asses kicked in some all out brawl on deck? Shit, he hoped he hadn’t missed Ryuji getting his ass handed to him.
Jogan thankfully decided to have mercy on Sokka and humor him, instead of ignoring him (outside of orders) as he tended to do. “We’ve docked. They’ve ordered everyone off board.”
“Already?”
Jogan rolled his shoulders. “It’s been a week since the poles.”
Spirits. He was out for a while. “Where are we then?”
“In Sen Dor port for repairs.”
Sen Dor? Why did that sound familiar? Seeen Doooo – Sokka’s back sent sharp sparks of pain up his spine with how fast it shot up. This was Zhao’s port. Sokka closed his eyes in frustration. Zuko must have been too impatient to go further north. That, or he didn’t want to lose the avatar's scent. Shit! What a horrible time to be out. Couldn’t have happened in the three years they were just wandering out on sea with nothing to do, could it?
Sokka bowed, and bid the man a quick goodbye. He definitely didn’t miss the disapproving stare it earned him. Sokka ignored it, focusing on getting to his room and armouring up as fast as he could. Zhao was a fucking bastard, an ambitous prick that wouldn’t think twice about hyjacking Zuko’s mission for his own gains. If Lu Ten hadn’t died, he never would have made it up the rank as far as he had.
Unfortunately for literally everyone, that was just the kind of soldier Ozai liked.
Sokka swore under his breath.
Zuko just couldn’t give him a break, could he?

if those two don't kill each other, Sokka might lend a hand
a zutara drabble
HAPPIEST OF BIRTHDAYS TO MY DEAREST @hneyteacup. I wrote a birthday drabble inspired by one of your faves, SPUFFY. I however have never seen Buffy and in fact I just found out the fate of Spuffy approximately 30 seconds ago lol, BUT STILL, this drabble is inspired by them, for you 💕 HBD!!!! ILY!
--
The others might buy Zuko’s little transformation, but not Katara.
She knows exactly how sympathetic he can make his sorry life seem, all in the pursuit of Fire Nation supremacy.
So that’s why she’s been interrogating Zuko in his room for the past 15 minutes. She’s made him promise he won’t fire bend at her, and she did not feel a tinge of regret when he frowned and said he would never, sounding almost hurt.
Even so, Katara stands at the ready in front of him, hands sheathed in water just in case Zuko decides to break her rule.
“So you’re telling me you saw the soldiers that were following us back in Fire Fountain City. And yet you can’t describe them?” she asks, voice dripping with disdain.
Zuko groans and rolls his eyes, almost as if this was nothing more than an annoying hassle for him rather than the serious interrogation it was. He waits a beat, staring angrily at the floor, before he lifts his head to meet her eyes.
“Well, they were human,” he says, voice annoyingly sweet. “Two legs. Two arms.”
Katara scowls.
“They were wearing helmets,” Zuko says in exasperation. “Am I supposed to be able to recognize soldiers by the way they walk?”
“Maybe!”
At this point, Sokka enters with a steaming cup of tea. He takes one look between the two—the scowl on the prince’s face and the murderous intent on Katara’s, and mutters, “Not sure you know what you’re doing, sis.”
At this, Katara transfers her glare to her brother, though he only rolls his eyes too.
Katara huffs and takes the tea that Sokka brought, silently dismissing him. Sokka sends what seems to be an apologetic look (traitor!) to Zuko before wordlessly exiting.
“It’s about time,” says Zuko when Katara hands him the mug of tea. “Hope he got it warm enough, since you’re forbidding me from bending.”
Katara ignores him. “How did you even get here?” she snaps, hoping that asking this question for the umpteenth time will expose how he’d been following them for weeks (which was likely!) or how he’d kidnapped some of their friends to get their location (even more likely!).
“I told you; I stole a war balloon and followed you from Caldera.” He takes a sip of his tea and sighs. “I’m done. Let me talk to Aang.”
“Not yet! I’m not done!”
Zuko purses his lips but doesn’t argue any longer.
“How did you break into the North Pole?” Katara finally asks.
Really? Zuko’s expression seems to ask.
For some reason, he smirks at her. “Hmm, I’m not sure.”
“Tell me.”
“I’m trying to remember,” he says, putting down his tea to make a show of tapping his chin. “It was very traumatic.”
“How long are you going to pull this crap?”
“How long are you going to keep me prisoner in my own room?”
Katara sniffs. “I’m not leaving you alone until you tell me something worthwhile.” Until he proves to her that allowing him to stay here will have some sort of benefit.
“Fine,” Zuko says, lying back and stretching out on his bed. One arm holds his head up as he watches Katara over his nose. “We can stay here all day and all night, with you—what did you call it?—interrogating me.” He smirks again, the crooked expression on his face downright infuriating.
Katara abruptly changes tactics, crossing her arms and stepping toward him, the water falling from her hands in large splashes that she ignores. “You know what, I don’t think you want me to leave you alone,” she says slowly, her lip curling in satisfaction. “I’m the only one who will talk to you, anyway.”
Zuko’s smirk falls, and Katara feels a little flame of triumph in her chest roar to life.
“Right, I don’t want you to leave me alone,” he parrots, the bite back in his voice. “I definitely want to be constantly reminded how much you hate me.”
Katara does not feel another twinge of regret. She does not push anything away.
Instead, she falls to her knees with a mocking gasp.
“Does his highness require better accommodations?” she says, her voice warbling. “Better amenities?”
“Katara—” Zuko says, unamused.
“An innocent victim to burn, perhaps?”
“Katara, please—” Zuko says, voice more serious. But she keeps going.
“Do you require a maiden before you cooperate?” she taunts, crawling toward him and exposing her neck. “What about me? Will I do?”
At this point, Zuko is exhaling smoke, but he’s not bending. She wonders how far she can goad him. She crawls closer until she’s at the edge of his bed and mockingly reaching toward him.
“Please, your highness, what must we do to please you?!” she all but shrieks, vaguely feeling like she would make a great actress as Zuko slowly shakes his head, as if to say What did I do to deserve this?
Well, she can think of a lot of things!
Just when she thinks of naming all those things to Zuko, she suddenly hears the swish of a cloak behind her and the sound of wood hitting the ground. Her and Zuko both turn toward the noise, to see Aang, a confused smile on his face, his ears a little pink, and his glider in his hand.
“Um—Katara—I think I’ll talk to Zuko now,” says Aang slowly, eying her strangely. She’s about to ask what’s up with him before she realizes her arms are sprawled beseechingly toward Zuko, her body half on his bed and half on the ground.
“Right, yes!” she says, getting up daintily and wiping her tunic with her hands as if what she’d been doing was perfectly normal. “I’ll just be—”
Inexplicably, she looks back to Zuko, who is also watching her, bemused.
“Bye!” she squeaks to the room with a hurried wave.
She’s talking to Aang, of course. Not Zuko.
Definitely not Zuko.

Azutara bending swap?
hehehehe i got it.
okie hear meowt-
Aang didn't know what to think of this at all. Here's Sokka and Toph explaining their 'excellent' plan that Aang sure knows can be done successfully. But the reaction they might get out of this could be deadly.
"I- I donno, Sokka. This could be dangerous." Aang hesitates. "I've never tried it before-"
Sokka interjects. "There's always a first time for everything. And besides, they wouldn't even know what hit 'em! See, all you have to do is . . ."
And so, that night, when the complete Gaang had finally fallen asleep around their makeshift campsite in their respective tents, Sokka wakes up Aang to carry out their mission. It's very simple in Sokka's head, but it's Aang who's sweating under his knees trying not think of what might happen if-
"Shhh." Sokka holds a finger up his lips. "We need to be sleek and stealthy." He guides them through the soft grass, trying not to make a sound.
Aang cannot help but shiver. Sokka has a brilliant mind. But sometimes, just sometimes, it comes up with shitty ideas like this one and Aang cannot help but follow through with them. Call it brotherly love, or genuine curiosity, it doesn't matter.
Sokka suddenly stops before a blue tent. "I'll go and check if she's asleep. Wait for my signal, and then you can come in and do your thing." He disappears quietly inside the tent.
Aang waits patiently for what feels like an eternity but he knows it's only been a few seconds. He jumps out of his skin in jitters when Sokka's head peeks out again. "We're on."
Aang gulps, stepping inside the tent slowly. It's dark inside but he can fairly make out a figure wrapped in blankets, sound asleep. Katara's figure.
He moves near her with surprising speed, suddenly filled with the urge to get this over quickly. He kneels down before placing one thumb on Katara's forehead gently and the other thumb on her chest wrapped in blanket.
A blinding bluish glow fills up the tent before dying down as quickly as it came.
Aang then repeats the process, and this time, an orange glow fills up the tent and dies down again. When Aang opens his eyes, Katara's still sleeping like a log, exhausted from the day's work and training.
One down, one to go.
---
Aang has always been an early bird. But today, he doesn't wanna wake up. Or at least, doesn't wanna sit up and join the others. He's been up all night anyways. Although, he can hear everything that's happening around the camp as clearly as a spirit lake.
That is, Sokka screaming his lungs out. "ZUKO! I CAN'T SEEM TO GET THE FIRE GOING FOR BREAKFAST!! WAKE YOUR LAZY ASS UP AND FIREBEND!!!!"
Aang knows Zuko's still in bed like an old lady. But what he didn't expect is to hear Azula's voice.
"I can help with that." She says smugly.
Aang peeps one eye open, not wanting to miss out on the fun but at the same time, not wanting to get caught in crossfire when things go south too.
Sokka gives her a knowing smirk. "Sure you can." He says sarcastically.
"Now, now, Sokka. Is this how you treat a Fire Princess who's trying to become go- GOO-" She chokes on the word. "God damn it! I can't even say the word!!"
"Well, if you insist . . ." Sokka trails off before standing up and moving aside.
Azula takes a deep breath calming her posture. But it really seems like Aang is the one who's supposed to be taking deep breaths cuz he fears after a minute, these are going to be his final.
When the Fire Princess jumps high, spinning mid-air to deliver a perfectly executed firebending kick, a hugh blob of water appears out of no where, and splashes on the firewood stacked under the pot meant for breakfast, drenching it wet. The force of the splash is so high, Azula gets drenched as well, following Sokka, who's jaw is practically on the floor by now.
Azula is the first to come to her senses. "WHAT THE FUCK?!"
Aang notices Toph's face turn red as she's trying to hold in her laughter. Azula, not believing her eyes, demonstrates a series of double-punches, all of which results in blobs of water splashing this way and that, hitting every single person present on site.
"What's going on here?!" Katara walks in, carrying another bout of firewood, before getting hit by a water whip straight to her face. "OW!"
Katara looks all around, amazed. Isn't she the only waterbender in their Gaang?! Then who hit her?! Then she takes in the scene before her, mouth slowly falling agape.
"Katara! Check it out!" Suki exclaims. "Azula's waterbending!"
"That's impossible." Katara lets the firewood in her arms drop down to the ground.
"Oh yeah?" Sokka crosses his arms over his chest. "Say that to the wood that is soaking wet right now. All I wanted, was a little fire to light up the stove. But guess who decided to waterbend and ruin it!!"
"Hey! I didn't even know I could do that!" Azula yells at Sokka's head.
"So, you're saying we all knew you could do that?!"
Azula looks confused, squinting her eyes in disbelief. "Wha-?"
"Sokka," Katara looks at her brother suspiciously. "Did you mix cactus juice into our dinner yesterday night?"
"No!" His voice reaches a higher octave. "Why would I do that?!"
"Why are we all seeing visions then?!"
Aang wishes he had some fire flakes right now, snacking on them as he watches this drama unfold. Ember Island Players could never. He's pretty sure Toph's thinking the same too.
"Guys, relax." Toph says, leaning back on Appa, sitting on the ground and crossing her legs. "Katara can easily take out the water from your precious firewood, Sokka. Don't be such a wuss. Right Katara?"
"Right . . ." Katara says, just as she takes a stance, readying herself for some concentrated waterbending. She turns towards the firewood kept under the pot, and moves her hand upwards in one fluid motion.
To everyone's disbelief and shock, the firewood first smokes steam and then suddenly bursts into violet-coloured flames, burning bright before turning to orange, then red.
"WHAT THE FUCK?!"
Aang doesn't even have to look to know who said that.
"Okay, now I'm definitely worried." Katara's face is filled with horror. "I can firebend?!"
Azula pinches the bridge of her nose. "It's too fucking early for this shit-"
"Aang!" Katara calls out. "Get over here!!"
Aww man! Just when he thought things were getting interesting-
"Coming!" Aang calls out as he jumps up and sprints towards the crime scene. "What? What's wrong?"
"This." Katara says, before she catches hold of a screetching Momo and lights his tail on a violet fire.
Azula rolls her eyes before issuing a punch, that hits both Katara and Momo, putting out the fire and bathing them in water. "And this."
Aang knows he's supposed to be acting surprised. But he does a terrible job at it. "Maybe . . . you guys are the Avatars . . . ???" He trails off with a guilty look on his face.
Katara narrows her eyes. "Aang . . ." She threatens him, instantly aware that he somehow knows something. "What is going on?"
She looms over him, casting a glare. Aang tries his best to not pee his pants. "I- I- I donno, I- I just woke up!"
Sokka comes to his rescue thankfully. "Maybe somehow your powers got swapped?"
Katara turns to him, still not getting out of Aang's personal space. "How is that even possible?"
"Yeah." Azula chirps in. "How's that possible? I've got blue flames. That peasant conjured up violet ones."
"Maybe you're just jealous that I got the hottest burning fire." Katara crosses her arms at Azula.
"Maybe I can shut that flame up with a flick of my wrist!" Azula says, stomping her way towards Katara, standing toe-to-toe with her, nose almost bumping with Katara's.
"Uh . . . guys?" Aang scratches his bald head taking two steps back, growing increasingly confused and concerned. "Maybe we can calm down and talk about this-?"
"Maybe you're an idiot to think that you could ever shut me up!" Katara bits back at Azula. paying no heed to Aang's feeble attempt at peace.
"Maybe you're an idiot to think that I couldn't!!"
"Oh!" Katara exclaims. "Do it then!! I dare you to shut me up!!"
"Let's go, peasant. AGNI KAI!!"
"Oh, did you forget, little princess?" Katara asks sarcastically, inching closer to Azula. "You're not a firebender anymore. Maybe you need to get your memory checked."
Azula steps even closer, if that's even possible. "Maybe I don't need my fire to shut you up."
"Mayyyyyybeee," Toph interjects, finger up her nostril, picking her nose non-chalantly. "You two need to kiss and save us all the trouble."
"WHAT?!"
"WHAT?!"
Both Azula and Katara turn to Toph with a panicked look on their faces.
"T- That's absurd! What are you talking about, Toph?!" Katara stutters, even as she looks at Azula's side profile for a second longer and takes a step backwards.
"I'm talking about what I'm seeing." Toph says smugly.
"You're blind." Azula states.
"Yeah, but my feet don't lie. Every time you two get heated, and trust me that's a lot of times, you both get in each other's face like this and spew out empty threats as if my feet can't figure out you two are lying! At least, I know you are lying, Katara. I got nothing on Azula except a faster heartbeat."
Azula's eyes narrow to slits, but other than that, there's no reaction from her. Katara steals a glance at Azula once again before she turns to Toph. "What does that have to do with our bending getting swapped?"
"Uh . . . I was the one who did it-" Aang raises his hand slowly, with a sheepish look on his face.
"AANG!!" Sokka cries out. "You made a personal Avatar promise not to divulge this information!!!"
Katara's anger immediately shifts to Sokka. "So you are the mastermind behind this . . ." A captivatingly pretty violet flame lights up in her palm as she slowly moves to Sokka.
"Katara . . ." Sokka gulps. "I can explain . . ."
"Zip it."
"Look . . . your fights were getting pettier and frequent and you both idiots couldn't see what we all were seeing so we thought-" Sokka begins to take steps back as Katara turns her back to Azula and advances slowly towards him.
"We're not giving your bending back until you either make up and be civil or make out and be civil." Toph states firmly.
But Katara wasn't showing signs of stopping anytime soon on her death walk towards Sokka.
Azula rolls her eyes. "Make up and be civil sounds too boring and wayyyy too long for me. And I want my bending back now. So . . ."
As quick as her own lightning, she moves behind Katara who's still advancing towards Sokka. Azula stops her with a hand around her delicate wrist, and pulls her flush against her body. Katara lets out a surprised yelp as she finds herself being whipped around by her waist to face Azula, her breath frozen inside her lungs, too surprised to even blink.
A soft smirk escapes Azula's lips before she places two fingers under Katara's chin, tilting her face up to plant her lips on hers in a gentle kiss. Katara's too frozen with shock to reciprocate. When she finally does, the kiss is already over. Nothing overdone at all. Just a soft chaste kiss against her lips and Katara feels like she needs to sit down, suddenly weak in her knees.
"There." Azula says proudly. "Now give us our respective bending back."
Katara blinks up at Azula, still stuck in a daze. "You . . . traitor! Who gave you permission to just . . . take advantage of me like that?! How dare you-?!"
"You're a terrible liar, Katara." Toph interrupts her.
"Oh, yes you are." Azula agrees with a smile.
"No, I'm not!"
"Oh?" Azula mocks disbelief. "Then why are you still holding onto me like this?" She gestures with her eyes down to Katara's hands.
Katara follows her line of sight and almost has a heart attack as she finds herself completely wrapped up in Azula's arms and her hands holding onto Azula's shoulder and neck desperately.
"UGH!!!!" She exclaims as she lets her forehead fall down to Azula's shoulder, burying her face in embarrassment. "You people are driving me insane!!!!!"
Everyone present on crime scene laughs except Katara.
Zuko walks out of his tent, rubbing his good eye and yawning. "Hey, what are we laughing about? What did I miss?!"
"Okay, who's gonna tell him?" Toph says before escaping the scene.

Fic authors self rec! When you get this, reply with your favorite five fics that you've written, then pass on to at least five other writers. Spread the self-love 💜
Thank you so much, love! ❤️❤️❤️
While I love my bigger, ongoing fics ("delicate" and TYCSTD), I'm veering into a slightly different approach.
Besides my more well-known fics, these five will always have a place in my heart.
Of Halos, Waves, and Starlight – The very first fic that I wrote, the one that kicked all of this off! This one is my baby, the one that I wrote based on a fleeting idea and a want to see a ZK fic with them dancing and falling in love. It was June 2020, shortly after that year’s Zutara Week prompts had been released and the pandemic shut down everything, and I had a lot more free time on my hands. So I thought, why not? Let’s write a fanfic for the hell of it! Then once I finished Halos, I decided to write something for all seven prompts… and the rest is history!
The Fortuneteller and the Fire Prince – This one was born from a tumblr post, when I thought “that sounds like a fun fic idea – I’d want to read that!” before deciding, “actually, I want to write that.” This is my third most-liked fic, and it’s one that I go back to from time to time. I just love the idea of S1 Zuko discovering that a certain waterbending peasant might just be the love of his life. This was so fun to write ❤️
this pain won’t be for evermore – This little two-parter was another fic that was a lot of fun to write. I have a fondness for Pining!Zuko and this one has a whole forest full of our fiery boi pining away. Katara’s POV in the second chapter was also a pleasant surprise, as I initially hadn’t planned to add on to it. I followed this fic up with another entry for ZK Drabble December 2020, though this one will always be one of my favorites.
You are the Ocean (and I'm Good at Drowning) – This is one of my more purple-prose-ish (purply prose? purplish prose?) fics, and I make zero apologies for how indulgent it is, even if it probably defies the law of physics on some level. This fic is straight-up fluff and steam, and I have such a soft spot for this little story.
little rays of starlight – One of these days I will go back to working on the parent fic that inspired this one, but it is not this day. In the meantime, this was a sweet little break from everything else, set in The Phoenix and the Dragon universe and chronicling ZK’s first trip to the South Pole after becoming parents, hoping to show their daughter the southern lights. I love doting, fussy mother hen Zuzu worrying about their bebe while his loving wife looks on, grinning at her dork of a husband. There are lots of continuity nods and a few references that tie this to the parent fic, though it can be read as a standalone.
A runner-up would be Happy Birthday, Father Lord, also set in the same AU as “little rays of starlight.” This one was written as a coping mechanism during a particularly stressful time, and I needed a dose of major fluff to cheer me up. Yes, back when I first came up with this universe I gave ZK a whopping SEVEN steambabies. Yes, I got carried away and no, nowadays they’d have a fraction of that at most. But still, this one was a lot of fun and best of all, there’s a lot of love.
I tag you – yes you! Don’t make me go into your inbox 😉

elle(paintedlight)’s fics
heyyy 😌 over the past few years (and also now. lol) I’ve been all over the place fandom-wise, so I thought I’d put links to all my fics & content in one place!! 💖
Avatar: The Last Airbender
Some Say Love is a Burning Thing (E, 94.7k): My one completed long fic!! It’s a zukka AU of the Boiling Rock arc where Mai makes a deal with Sokka— she’ll free his imprisoned father in exchange for Zuko. It’s a wild ride but has a happy ending :) fic art | moodboard | excerpt
Love Amongst the Dragons (T, 2.5k, WIP): Yes, I did try and write this in-universe play for myself, the version referenced by Zuko in my long fic, Some Say Love is a Burning Thing. I might finish this WIP… but I might not. It’s written like a fairytale if that intrigues you :)
Supernatural
moonlight in the kitchen (T, 6.6k): My favorite oneshot I’ve ever written (very proud of my first and last lines haha)! Dean & Cas get stuck in a snowstorm, Cas almost dies, Dean panics, the usual. excerpt
hot coals (T, 5.5k): The first installment of the north of savanna series, a destiel summer camp AU. It’s a oneshot too & can definitely be read on its own! Probably my favorite fic as far as atmosphere goes :) moodboard | excerpt 1 | excerpt 2
a wasp with his wings outstretched (T, 8.2k, WIP): The second installment of the north of savanna series, in which Dean is a repressed and religiously traumatized camp counselor and Cas philosophizes about fireflies when he’s not being a nurse. May or may not continue this one- the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak or whatever! moodboard | excerpt
any kind of wishful prayer (T, 1.1k): My shortest fic & my only unhappy/unresolved ending. Cas believes he is stuck in the Empty, losing everything over and over again. It’s also the only time I have published a first draft lmao
Dungeons & Daddies (tinymushroom)
Thought I’d have a pseudonym for these!
can you do no harm? (T, 5.3k, WIP): An oakson in the forgotten realms AU in which Darryl is a bodyguard to Hen, Prince of Oakvale (inspired by this post). I may or may not return to this, and may eventually rework it, but we will see :)
quiet light (T, 3.4k): A nark oneshot set in between seasons 1 and 2, in which Nicky gets hurt during a mission at an aquarium, so Lark carries him to a shark tunnel & a character study on their identity issues ensues :) excerpt 1 | excerpt 2 | excerpt 3
closed fist, split lip (T, 5.2k): A nark oneshot that is set before the events of quiet light, in which Nicky catches feelings and maybe Lark does too? Featuring force feeding healing potions, beating each other up, and giving a hand massage (not a euphemism) <3 excerpt
demonic endurance (T, 0.3k): A triple drabble set 1 month before closed fist, split lip!
how I get myself killed (T, 0.6k): A very short fic set directly before demonic endurance! yes I am just writing this series backwards lol
on a midnight walk alone (T, 1.6) A Cowboy Lark/Crossroads Demon Nick AU demon deal ficlet because I was missing writing Americana vibes… excerpt
#stuck between only writing original fiction from now on and writing fic for anything that pops in my brain#either way I don't have the time for it!! and yet.#dndads fic#spn fic#atla fic
