another similarity with the two vlogs, that mosaic thing of their photos. and the two actually are a kind of “celebration” right? with wyb it’s for his debut anniversary and with GG, the 6 chapters and all that happened within that timeframe he shared with us. i know this is not the most unique concept out there but for the two to use it in for videos released very closely + other similarities, it will make you 👀

Dude, you have no idea what a can you just opened in my brain.

Now I definitely need to know Draxum's opinion of how to train your dragon and Kung fu panda,

Man, if I had known the answer would be so much fun I wouldn't have excluded Bambi and the lion king.

I don't blame him, I adored Hercules as a child, however, after learning more about Greek mythology, I can't help but think how much they changed, especially Hades. Hollywood has a habit of portraying him as if he's the devil every chance they get even if in the myths he's one of the more decent gods. Heck, the guy is a saint compared to his brothers. Even in the Percy Jackson movie! He wasn't even a bad guy in the books! And don't get me started on Artemis fowl!

What movie or series is the hippo scene from? One of the most interesting aspects of zootopia is how the city is specially designed to accommodate each species. Which once again makes me want to know which one would be about newer movies, like Encanto, and I'm not just saying that because my country and Colombia are basically brothers and we share a lot of cultural aspects.

I feel like Bambi would strike too close to home. Considering how he lost his own mother and whatnot.

Oh man, my mom loved Hercules. She always wanted to watch that one with us. Looking at it as an adult it feels kind of like a fever dream.

And yeah, they botch the original story in pretty much every Disney movie but Hercules is one of those stories where you look at the source material and go "why did Disney think this would make a good children's movie?" (Hunchback is another one of those) Yeah, Hades is a bro. But he's a face for people to project their feelings of death onto. In ancient times, death came often and early, with most children never making it to adulthood and plagues and famine and whatnot. A no-nonsense guy who takes his job seriously was what was comforting to people then. Now we have a totally different view of death, so it makes sense that people project their fear of discomfort onto personifications of mortality.

I actually haven't seen a lot of newer Disney/Dreamworks movies. The last one I saw that wasn't a remake or sequel was probably Moana. (I watched it with my mother who, during the opening narration that calls Maui a trickster, gasped dramatically and exclaimed in a scandalized tone "he is a trickster!") Guys, I will consume media when the stars align. My ADHD is bad enough that I usually can't really sit through a whole movie, so it takes me longer than two hours to get through one.

I think it was Sing, which looking at the Wikipedia page I was probably thinking of the elephant, not a hippo. I wasn't really watching, my mom turned it on (she loves movies where everyone is different animals, and she still watches kids movies even though her kids are both adults) and I just remember a scene where a character has to duck to get through a doorway in her house and saying something about how a society with anthropomorphic elephants would have architecture to accommodate their size and wouldn't be basing everything off human sizes. (unless obviously there was a reason humans were the default, like in TMNT where mutants are fairly new and are still using human infrastructure) My mom told me to shut up. I'm the person everyone hates watching movies with, I projected that onto Draxum.

Incidentally, my mom did watch Zootopia later (with my sister; I haven't seen it) and the worldbuilding was one of the things she praised. She was incredibly impressed by how much they clearly thought out the implications of a nonhuman society, instead of just making everyone funny-shaped humans. So I think I rubbed off on her.

Lights, Camera, ANIMATION

This is mostly an outlet for myself to vent, so no sweat if you scroll on by. I watched a reaction video complain about the depth of field in a 3d animated piece, and how there’s no need to use those techniques because there’s “no camera” in animation. WHEW. Now, I will give them a lot of leeway because they’re reacting to things live, and not all opinions are allowed the time to form more cohesive thoughts. And I’ll also say they were totally fair to critique its frequent use of rack focus in the sequence.

But this plays into a broad issue that Western, specifically American, audiences have regarding animation. They see it as a genre and not a medium. A medium that can do allllllllll the genres live action can do. If I was the type to be buried or have a tombstone when I die, it would absolutely read: ANIMATION IS A MEDIUM. NOT A GENRE. JFC.

But back to the casual comment that had me gnashing my teeth: Yes, Margaret, there IS a camera in animation.  Whether it be all the ways traditional and digital animation can recreate different lens effects through other means, to programs having a robust camera feature as a layer/object/however it implements the tool. 

And along with the other tools we share with live action to tell a story: lighting, color, framing, blocking, editing...all that jazz, the camera and its variety of features are a big part of that. It’s an incredibly important tool in how we direct the audience to what’s significant in the scene and when to look at it. 

EXAMPLE TIME 

The Lion King has a poop ton of camera techniques just in the opening sequence. In a lot of 2d it’s applying a blur effect to recreate the use of lenses, but it’s the same thought process. From mimicking wide lenses to standard lenses, to more extreme changes to the depth of field, as with this use of rack focus.

The below first shot would be overwhelming with deciding where to look if it used a wide lens. The 2nd you could argue would be less personal and emotional with the foreground and background elements in focus, pulling attention from her reflection.

We recreate flares and bokeh effects as if a spherical lens were turned towards a light source. And paint backgrounds in a way that recreates the standards’ effect of blurring objects in the distance, as our own eye would.

Arcane does every type of camera trick in the book. Rack focus can be a tricky one with me. I enjoy it when the lens doesn’t come with any extreme warping, and is really subtle. But y’all, filmmaking is just so cool with this god-like control. Thou shalt not see what is there until I deem it necessary! 

I could be wrong on this one, but Kung Fu Panda’s all-out playground with depth of field looks like they’re creating a tilt shift effect in some sequences. And I frickin’ love it and wish more animated films went for it. The choice really made it feel like we were watching a miniature world that was real and not computer-animated, somewhat akin to stop-motion sets.

Sigh. I just love the medium, y’all. From all the cinematic language and techniques, on top of the movie magic of simply creating the Illusion of Life from scratch, and making it look like one person crafted the whole shebang.

 So to cap it all off, let’s enjoy 2d animation going whole hog with a dang zolly.

Worst film you’ve seen, best film you’ve seen, and one that would maybe be surprising that you haven’t

Please note: I did film studies for an A-Level. That teacher was the best teacher I've ever had, and some things he taught me can't be shaken.

Worst Film: Eragon (2006), not for any reason other than the director clearly hadn't read his source material. I love the books. But the movie... 🤦Acting, visuals, all fine. Apart from one thing. WHY DOES THE DRAGON HAVE FEATHERS??? WHEN DO DRAGON EVER HAVE FEATHERS??? (i'm sorry, i'm just nitpicking at this thing. One exception to this rule applies. but not when the dragon is explicitly described to have scales and leathery wings. not feathers!!!) (I'm going to stop here before I go into a rant. Yes, I am watching Disney closely. They do something I don't like, they will get a rant of insults worthy of Angela the Herbalist.)

Best Film: That is so hard!! So I'm just going to name a few favourites (honestly, I'd have a better time with best directors): The Lion King and How to Train Your Dragon will always reign among favourites for me. Not just the way they were animated, but the soundtracks... woah. (that being said, the soundtrack in kung fu panda is also up there). Live action-wise, Wonder Woman would have to be up there. Amazing story and amazing visuals, acting, all of it. Rebel Moon may have only just come out, but I think it's brilliant. Note to anyone who may want to watch it for themselves: don't go into it thinking it's Star Wars. It won't work. Don't watch it if you don't like slo-mo. It is Zack Snyder's signature move. Acting, VFX, cinematography, all of it, amazing stuff.

Also, how can I forget Seven Kings Must Die. I really shouldn't start because once I do, I will not stop.

Something I Haven't Seen: Barbie. I really need to watch that one. And maybe Oppenheimer.
